When Joe Lieberman was running for office, he loved him some habeas corpus. Was fond of waxing rhapsodic about its importance. And just before the election last year, in September Joe voted “yea” on the Specter Amendment to the Military Commissions Act, which which would have pulled the habeas language out of the Act and restored it.
Because nobody wanted to restore habeas more than Joe, you know.
That bill had no chance of passing, a symbolic vote like so many other upon which Lieberman’s reputation for being a “good liberal on everything but the war” rests.
Today, only three votes shy of restoring habeas, Joe voted “nay.”
America’s moral standing, and with it the security of the United States, suffered another setback today, atop a pile of setbacks that has accumulated over the past six years. The outcome of this vote is both symbolic and tragic. Each of us in the Senate faced a decision either to cast a vote in favor of helping to restore America’s reputation in the world, or to help dig deeper the hole of utter disrespect for the rule of law that the Bush Administration has created. Unfortunately, too many of my colleagues chose the latter, and my disappointment runs deep. But I will not rest my case with this vote. Instead, this defeat will only deepen my resolve to restore the rule of law and with it American security, for far too much is at stake – for every American – to simply give up the fight.”
We already know that Ned Lamont would win if the election were held today, but the reason he didn’t win THEN is because the media swallowed Joe’s big load of bs about nobody wanting to bring the troops home more than him and other assorted boldfaced lies without question.
Any Connecticut resident so inspired to let their local media know that Connecticut voters have once again been rolled, feel free to use the “spotlight” function at the end of the post and do so. Helpful contact information abounds.

JANE!
ZED!
Good afternoon Jane.
Jane!
Arrgh! Arggghhh! Agggghhh!
Sorry. I just become incoherent over Lie-berman.
Jane !! And singles !! As for Joe — there are people here who detest him far more than I do. Vichy Dem. I suppose we’ll have to put up with some of his finger-wagging on this comeing Sunday’s Talking Heads. Shit !
Where’s my pen?! I want to deface that smirking smug mug at the top of this post!
Jane, that photo of Lieberman’s smug, smiling face with his hand on his heart is making me nauseous.
I hope everyone in CT who voted for him is a little embarrassed they fell for it, and angry at their local media for being such morons.
HoJo is so contemptible. That photo really brings out his sanctimonious mien, doesn’t it?
Jane:
What do you think of Joe-Lie registering on Monday in Stamford, CT, to vote as Dem?
Shortride strikes again in his delusions of grandeur.
I bet he has one of those funhouse mirrors he poses in front of to make himself look bigger.
Treacherous weasel.
Ah yeah! CT voters hope you are proud of re-electing modern day benedict arnold Joe Lieberman.
Shame on those of you who knew better but re-elected Lieberman & Shays.Like them you have no shame nor conscience.
You can also thank Bloomberg & Muukasey for donating to Lieberman.
Is there much Bush family influence in CT anymore?
BMcgarth @ 12
And Obama helped. So did Bill Clinton. Thanks guys for hanging this stinking albatross around our necks.
Joe Lieberman the new Zell Miller.
Joe-Lie is now speaking against the Webb Amendment…On C-Span 2.
the good news- Lieberwurst will never again be elected senator from Connecticut.
From the previous thread
peanutbutter, about Blackwater …
Anyone think that Joe is going to try to take the Democratic primary for senate next time? I mean, what’s the point of registering Democratic?
Joe Lieberman: Have kneepads, will travel.
john in sacramento @ 19
Now, why does that not surprise me?
Biodun @ 17
ick!
Biodun @ 17
That was predictable. Cuz HoJo, he supports the troops, yessir. Supports them right into exhaustion, mental health problems, and don’t forget, death in a civil war.
Thanks, HoJo!
hackworth @ 15
I don’t believe Obama showed up in Connecticu to help him (unlike Hilly’s hubby). What Obama did was not say anything, like most of the other Dems, DLC and otherwise.
freedom on the line
s/
sorry, this the submit button early by accident…
was cleaning the kitchen floor while listening to c-span2 streaming through my stereo… all fine until i heard joe lie talking at me from the living room.
acck. i had to run to the laptop to get some moral support from fdl…. thanks jane, your post was perfect.
The Republicans and Joe Lieberman are caught in this bind of trying to sell us that night is day, that keeping troops in Iraq will get them out sooner, and that extending their tours actually helps them. Somehow they never get around to explaining why anyone should believe them about anything after a solid and consistent record of massive failure for 4 1/2 years.
how do I detest HoJo? let me count the ways…
January 2009:
riiiing…riiing! “Senator Reid, I have Senator Lieberman on the line.”
“Go ahead and put him through”
” Hello, Harry. I just wanted to touch base with you about those committee assignments, heh heh, you know, lookin’ forwarding to chairing that Homeland Security committee, heh heh.”
“…mmmmm yea Joe, you know I think you might want to give the Minority Leader a call on that. With so many new Democrats, these assignments are filling up fast. So as soon as the Republicans get a new Minority Leader you should give him a call…mmmm kaaaay? Bye.” click
Hugh @ 28
Hugh, not to mention why should anyone believe them when they lie like it was breathing.
I find him so repulsive I can’t even stand to read about his predictable behavior.
He disgusts me.
Joe Lieberman (I-Warmonger): I favor more war, how about Iran, and Lichtenstein, what kind of a name is that? We should invade them too.
john in sacramento @ 19
Thank you for all the info. There are several Blackwater type companies out there but Blackwater is something we need to be concerned about. They are not part of “We the People” but anti the people.
Is the Webb amendment expected to be voted on today?
I just called his office to share my thoughts, so to speak, and ….quelle surprise!!! voice mail only….I suspect joe and staff are hiding under the desk as phones ring off the hook. Should anyone else care to express their thoughts the# is 202-224-4041….I was polite… didn’t want to be, but I was. I wonder if they’ll listen to all those voice messages or simply hit delete???
Hugh @ 33
“don’t forget Andorra!”
punaise @ 29
I hate thee with a hate you inspired
With my lost rights, — I hate thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! — and, if God choose,
I shall only love thee better after death.
I stepped away for a moment. Joe-Lie is still on? In-f*cking-credible.
shorter Joe…the will to power…I tell ya!
Biodun @ 39
Biodun, at work, can’t watch. Has he called for us to begin bombing Iran yet, thus justifying his opposition to the Webb amendment cuz we need the troops on the second front?
up next: the connecticut post will once again write a scathing editorial, with no mention of the fact that they endorsed Lieberman in 2006.
disgraceful.
Biodun @ 39
Apparently, not letting our troops have a decent break is important to him.
Joe Liarman is going to be on Sean Hannitys radio show in about 30 minutes. FYI
Joe is a testimonial that only the good die young. He should live to 200.
Holy Joe is repeating Bush’s new meme of “success”. He says we can still win if Congress does not lose its “will”. That one is a Cheneyism. This guy is so bought by the Republicans that he probably has Bush and Cheney tatooed on his butt cheeks.
I would have to assume (sorry here) that CT does not allow for the recall of a sitting senator…
I usually think of politicians as maggots but this guy is a full-on *******.
Penguins @ 36 sed:
‘I suspect joe and staff are hiding under the desk as phones ring off the hook.’
Calling all cartoonists. Calling all cartoonists. Please pick up the white courtesy phone.
Hugh @ 46
Yes, except that both tattoos are on the right cheek.
Has any Bush crony yet suggested sending all the troops a copy of “The Secret”?
Today we had a chance to restore a cherished ideal that gave us good standing in the eyes of our world citizenry and we let them down. Meantime, during the senate vote, all three cable “news” outlets did nonstop coverage of OJ Simpson. The Banana Republic is now us. Like Cafferty’s book says, “It’s Going To Get Ugly…”
And to think he was elected Vice President in 2000.
Now he just carries water for the people who cheated him out of it. What a pathetic, sniveling little weasel.
Hugh @ 46
Would that be the one where it’s the troops fault (when you are SUCCESSFUL enough, we’ll let you come home. Want to come home? Be MORE successful!) that they are still there.
Everytime I think about that speech, my head about explodes.
HoJo is helping Chimperor hold the troops hostage. Webb wants to free them.
QuakerGirl @ 34
Check this out. Blackwater vs 2 airforce guys in Afghanistan. Unbelievable. Read the investigators report linked in the article when you have time. Chilling what Blackwater gets away with:

SufiLizard @ 52
He might have been okay with Gore to ride herd on him. We’ll never know.
But it’s interesting, isn’t it, how differently Gore and Lieberman are seen six years later…!
Anyone know if there is any truth to Patraeus wearing a fraud medal last week?
CharlieAmerica @ 47
Senators and Representatives are considered “Federal officers” and not subject to recall, even in the states that have recall provisions in their state constitutions, which CT does not have.
PeterK @ 49
Actually I think he has Cheney on one cheek, Reagan on the other and Bush in the middle…
…wait, that middle one isn’t a tattoo….
PeterK @ 49
acronym vs. acrimony – actually he is so committed to the War on Terror that he has it tattooed on his butt: W on the left cheek, T on the right. bend over and spread the message, HoJo.
solai @ 35
At 5 ET.
dakine01 @ 57
Yup. We could recall Governor Davis, but we could never recall, say, Senator Feinstein.
For which she should thank her lucky stars.
Does anyone know when Bill ORAL- ly’s Birthday is ?
I would like to send him some loofah and Falafel, compliments of Jane & all of us at FDL !

Excellent. Your skills just keep getting better.
Suggested Connecticut Post editorial: “Boy, Did We Fuck Up!”
I agree that Lieberman has turned into a slug, never being on the right side on the important votes. I wish Lamont had his seat in the senate.
That said, I recommend tracking Joe over at Progressive Punch, which rates congress critters on dozens of issues important to progressives. They’re one of the best political rating systems anywhere.
They rank Holy Joe as 46th among senators, with a score of 76.71, which places him among the “Bush dogs” or Blue dogs, I believe. Here’s the middle muddle:
Rank Score Name Party State
46 76.71 Lieberman, Joseph I. I CT
47 76.47 Carper, Thomas R. D DE
48 75.54 Lincoln, Blanche L. D AR
49 74.55 Landrieu, Mary L. D LA
50 73.22 Baucus, Max D MT
51 49.86 Nelson, E. Benjamin D NE
52 36.21 Specter, Arlen R PA
53 34.50 Snowe, Olympia J. R ME
I don’t know if the columns will be preserved through cyberspace, but the import is this: the Bluest and Bushiest of the Blue/Bush Dogs has a better voting record than the least conservative of the Republicans, and that those low ranking Democrats, Tom Carper, Blanche Lincoln, Mary Landrieu, Max Baucus, and Ben Nelson, rank even lower than Holy Joe.
But, without them, we don’t have even nominal control of the Senate. Can they be “educated”? Or, like Holy Joe, are they beyond reach?

shot people in the back… kind of the rethug modus operandi isn’t it? Shooting people in the back.. rhetorically, politically, physically… Lieberling should know.
btw, is there any risk Lieberling will try to run for the Senate from another state? Say VA? I don’t trust him to simply ride off into oblivion in ‘08
Jane:
I am a long time FDL reader and first time commenter.
I find Joe L so disingenuous that I do not hear him at all whenever he is on television. Until about a year ago, this reaction of mine was reserved for Bush, and Utah congressional delegation (Orrin Hatch, Bob Bennett, Rob Bishop and Chris Cannon). Even the democrat Matheson has been very disappointing. I find all of them lacking in conscience and genuine desire to act in the public interest.
I hope the voters elect enough democrats to the senate next year so that Joe L can be kicked out of the party, stripped of his senate seniority and committee posts and we would not have to listen to his phony sincerity and pontifications. Better yet, let us crate conditions for him to join the republican party sometime next summer so that we can have a good backlash against them and get a solid majority in both houses of congress.

1,604 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Hamsher and the Firepup Patriots:
The loss of our constitution and our permanent occupation of Iraq and attendant economic depression does NOT fall on the shoulders of Joe Likuderman or the “clever” Bush fascists…no, the responsibility for the loss of American democracy lies squarely on the shoulders of the Democratic Party who allowed itself to become a wholly owned subsidiary of the American corporate oligarchy in 1981. The blueprint for the corporate fascism we now endure has been evolving since 1934 and has had a couple a “beer hall putsch” attempts (see Joe McCarthy and Richard Nixon) but the anti-fascist politics at the core of the Democratic Party was defeated by A*P*C, the DLC and the Clintons in the 1990’s. We got friendly fascism in 1981 with Ronnie Reagan, we got corporate fascism when Bill Clinton killed the left wing of the Democratic Party with the money of the corporate oligarchy.
So let’s not deflect our anger and too much of what’s left of our energy at pathetic figures like Joe Likuderman…let’s put the heat on what’s left of the elected progressives in the Democratic Party and wage war on the corporatists within the Democratic Party by droppin’ the war onto the laps of every single Democratic candidate for office everywhere.
We ken save the IDEA of democracy if we save the Democratic Party…let’s make the 2008 Democratic Convention look like 1968!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T BE AFRAID BUT FIGHT THE BATTLES WE KEN WIN!!
Mr. Lieberman. Have you no sense of the rule of law? It is a rhetorical question. You are supposed to be an officer of the court.
An attorney above all others should love the Constitution and respect those who have struggled and in many cases died for the law. You are an embarrasment to your profession and a blot on this nation’s concept of liberty. And for what do you do these things? For purely political reasons. Go away, Joe Lieberman. Just go away.
DeminUtah @ 69
Welcome. We all seem to feel the way you do about HoJo. Ick factor. Stick around and comment often.

Wanna bet? I sure as hell wouldn’t want to depend on the ‘good judgment’ of the citizens of ‘The NutBall State’. Folks there seem absolutely clueless about any damn thing except their ‘good friend’ Joey the LiarMan ‘bringn’ home the bacon’ ala the Groton sub base.
I wonder if the Nutball folks feel safer yet?
I an almost here OBL’s laughter…
I’ve been listening to the CSPAN Senate debate on the Webb admendment and it is absolutely crazy making!
The Republican tag teams of McCain, Graham, Warner and Kyle are totally dominating the debate on the Webb Admendment, taking up most of the time to spout the usual BS about supporting our troops, patriotism, blah, blah. blac while the Dems, with their usual well-reasoned timidity..
ARE LETTING THE REPUBS FRAME THE DEBATE AS THEY ALWAYS DO!
When will they stand up for the troops and for their constituents!
AAAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

Since moving to KC, my little one has enjoyed going past our back yard into an abandoned railway easement to look for the local wildlife, just as we used to do at Tilden Park. We’ve seen deer, owls, and even a beaver. But one thing was missing. The other day he looked at me and asked, “Daddy, do they have banana slugs in KC?”
I broke the bad news to him gently.

I think I can make out an apparition of the Virgin Joey…
we all know it, joe is a judas sheep.
he makes beleive he is a dmocrat when his point of view or his vote means nothing
for instance he voted against roberts but then voted for cloture
he is a judas sheep, he is their tool and I for the life of me cannot understand why the democrats don’t toss him off of every single forum they have given him priviledge
AND
it’s time they forced actual filibuster FOR REAL
habeas is too important to let them simply “declare” filibuster
if they want to destroy our country I want them to loose sleep over it

There is a silver lining I associate with Joe Lieberman. Sometimes he helps take my mind off Hillary.

On that note, it would be great to see a post regarding foreign government lobbying and who in the House or the Senate (or WH) is tied to which and the reasons why. We need to see the patterns in voting on certain issues and how they affect foreign policy. Anyone putting the national interests of another country above our own is commiting treason.

(2) an act of criminal conspiracy by govt official who choose to outsource to defy legal prohibitions on outsourced activity?

‘Tis a sad day for America, and all the worst have once again done their worst.
Yet every now and then there are stories about how the victims of the Argentina’s descent into dictatorship finally have their day in court, and even priests who collaborated with the fascists in creating the torture and making people “disappear” are brought to justice. The time will come for us too, and we must work for that day.
Oh my!

The net result of Republican wailing back then was nothing: even a sabotaged President had complete power to wage war. It’s echo-chamber talk to bemoan Republican hypocrisy when the real problem is that Congress has had no warmaking or war-ending power for a long time now.

If so, it needs to be dealt with now! McConnell’s main deal was to get immunity for companies that information is routed “through” in the U.S. It means that McConnell, who was specifically asked if they were spying on war protesters or Americans, denied it. He is head of intelligence – all of it. This is urgent, because apparently rumor has it that the Dems are getting ready to grant the immunity!!

dakine01 @ 138
I don’t agree.. OK, they didn’t beat up this little old lady, nor did they taser an overly loquacious student leader in Florida, nor did they torture an Iranian student in LA a few months ago, nor did they send a teenager to jail in Atlanta for 10 years for having consensual sex, nor did they charge kids for terrorism for standing up against racism in Louisiana, nor did they imprison 3 million of our fellow citizens… but the fact is, under shrub, there’s a new mood in America.
Cruel is good, “get tough” is the norm, facist thinking permeates all levels of the bureaucracy. This is what Nikolai Gogol warned against in his stories about Czarist russia — whatever the king does, his subjects ape, at levels of the functional hierarchy of state. The federals make people disappear, tolerate discrimination, legitimize torture and sexual abuse as instruments of policy, cut millions off from basic services that should be entitlements in any developed country, let a great city drown and then deny relief to its millions of citizens, and the other officials — state and local — take note and behave accordingly. Under shrub, our country has become deceased.. from top to bottom. I’m sorry.. but this isn’t a court of law.. sociologically and politically, he’s to blame (and so are those who empower him and his ilk) for where we are today.
I will never, ever, stop fighting against the kind of people Joe Lieberman is representative of. I don’t care what political party they claim either.
Ah . . . I pull the page up and the first thing I see is a Holy Joe looking as sanctimonious as possible. “Oh, Christ!” explodes from my lips; without even having to read the post, I know whatever is coming up, it can’t be good.

Webb is one of the few out there I would call a patriot. I actually just got off the phone with a member of his staff: I wanted to thank them. I also wanted to encourage him to bring up that Iran bill again; it’s in legislative limbo.
When Joe comes crawling back on his knees next year because he wants to be in the Majority, I hope Harry finally has what it takes to hand him his hat.
I despise Lieberman because he’s a weasel and a traitor to the Democratic Party. In my opinion, comments accusing him of “divided loyalty” or that refer to him as “Judas” are misplaced and compromise all the many sound and legitimate reasons to criticize him.
This appears to be Homeland Security’s list of “spy” contracts – EAGLE is SRA…there are a lot more. Won’t the companies all be immune in the FISA bill?

I wasn’t blaming the bushies I was saying that the atmosphere created by them permeates our society.
I agree.
The dumbing down of our educational system has lead to increased apathy and undue acquiescence to the powerful. The I got mine so screw you mentality promoted by the Right Wing and its Media Arm has brainwashed even the working poor. Their culture war and other phony straw man arguments divert attention from real issues that pertain to making life better for all of us.

I second this opinion. Some people need to look around at this putrescently corrupt country as a whole; Lieberman is just one pustule on it. I see little loyalty, divided or otherwise, among any members of Congress or the press. Calling him a “judas sheep” is a little like making him a scapegoat.
I disagree on the point that Lieberman goes out of his way to rat fuck the Democratic cause.
He is in fact a Judas shhep.
Jane – great post. That’s one helluva picture. I was not excited by any means when Gore picked Joe as his running mate. Although I didn’t agree with him on several issues, Lieberman at least seemed like a reasonable, thoughtful guy at the time. Wow, how much he has changed. He seems to have no moral center whatsoever. He’s just a whore to those who will fawn on him with the most lavish attention.
That smug picture with your post should be an encyclopedia entry for “The Republican’s Concubinus”.

Odd that there was a review board set up by CBS to review Rathers part in the unsubstantiated report about the Presidents military service record. (or lack of service)
Why no review set up by the Washington Post to examine Bob Woodwards efforts to undermine the Libby/Plame investigation being conducted by Patrick Fitzgerald all the while Woodward had knew that he had been holding information.
If you review one Journalist why not the other? Woodwards actions (holding info while undermining an investigation) was far more serious than Rathers mistake. (trusting his producer)
Selective reviewing…
Two things.
One. The media did not swallow Lieberman’s load of bs. They knew exactly whom they wanted, and they got him
Two. “America’s moral standing” is the last thing on Lieberman’s mind. He has other fish to fry.
Norske – I just saw your post/reply in the last thread. I fear you are correct – that the Republicans wouldn’t mind a Centrist Democrat in the President’s seat who is more interested in protecting corporate interests than helping the people of our nation. Many may feel that they don’t have a shot at the WH in ‘08, so they’re hoping for HRC (who they can beat up on and try to keep as a one-termer) instead of someone like Edwards or Obama. I’m sure they’d rather have any Republican in office than any Democrat, but they sure are hyping the idea of a Clinton candidacy – basically because they really want a bloody fight. People don’t have a visceral reaction to Edwards or Obama or really any other of the Democratic party candidates. Kerry bowed out. So, they have to put all their energy into promoting Clinton, as she’s the only chance of riling up their base… even though she’s likely the right-most Democratic party candidate on most issues.
LS @ 170
LS,
I have got to tell you that as someone who has worked within this arena for DoD, the “skills” listed for SRA are basically the skill set needed that will allow the Gov’t to get the product that has been contracted for. I have performed IV&V and QA and contract monitoring. These are the projects where SRA is looking at other contrators, not at US citizens.
Kathleen @ 171
Excellent point. And Tim Russert, too.
Epu’d on another thread:
Me: I’m calling to let MY SENATOR know that I want Habeus Corpus RESTORED.
Office Flunky: Maam, did you know that you do have the right to Habeus? Your rights were never taken away.
Me: If you do not know what’s been happening in our government, you probably should not be working for Senator Lieberman.
Office Flunky: Maam, as a US Citizen, your right has never been affected.
Me: Padilla is a US citizen, and he was tortured for 5 years without seeing a lawyer, without seeing a judge, do you call that “never been affected?
Office Flunky: Maam, as a US Citizen, you have the rights of habeus, and that right has never been affected.
Me: “Thats BULLSHIT!” Slams down the phone.

Damn, that bastard always gets my blood pressure up!
Once upon a time, “up or down vote” was a favorite GOP talking point. Of course, that was before Democrats took over the Senate.
For more on the Republicans’ obstructionist strategy on the Military Commissions Act (and virtually everything else), see:
“Up or Down Vote: Death of a GOP Talking Point.”

This provides interesting substantiation for the downgrading of news achors from genuine journalists (think Walter Cronkite) to today, where the position has devolved to mere “newsreader” (see Wiki). A real “news anchor,” per Wiki,
Rather’s complaint shows how the network was trying to limit his duties, essentially, to that of a mere newsreader, which seems to be the general trend. However, exceptions still come along now and then, when a news department is overwhelmed by events. My guess is that this is what happened to Anderson Cooper. Prior to Katrina, the CNN news anchor was developing into a somewhat somnolent role typified by Aaron Brown. Cooper’s combination of journalistic training plus his ability to wing it live was reminiscent of the early careers of Cronkite and Rather. CNN was trying to provide live coverage of Katrina. They didn’t have time for desk jockeys to digest the news into pablum form for Aaron Brown. Coop saw his opportunity, and he ran with it.
Rather was that way early in his career, first coming to national attention at the time of the Kennedy assassination. Read the Wiki biography of his journalistic chops, and you’ll see a real TV journalist in the best sense.

Some members of our neighborhood association referred to themselves as “the government” today in a conversation. Had a bit of a heyday with the their slip and pointed out that I had not voted for them and the positions were volunteer… Had fun defining the difference between an association and a government!
hackworth @ 161
Yep. Well said. And it’s well and good and necessary to talk about “moral authority” (a la Dodd) in our political leaders, but it is also necessary to recognize that a culture and a country in where an elderly woman can be physically brutalized by the authorities for a CC&R infraction and then prosecuted for her trouble really, kinda, doesn’t have any to speak of. Zero. Zip.
kdh22 @ 131
I’m planning another round next New Moon…
Never have liked Joe. Didn’t know anything about him until Gore chose him for the VP slot. Soon as I saw him I knew we weren’t destined for each other.
That pursed mouth.
That sanctimonious air.
That oh-so-discreet yet impossible-to-miss piety.
Those cold, calculating-my-advantage eyes.
All the worst traits of Torquemada, Bloody Mary and Calvin.
The skin crawls as the blood pressure rises.
Dear Senator Lieberman,
I am writing to inform you that I will vigorously oppose your re-election when your current term expires.
While I have respected your independence and our right to disagree agreeably over the war in Iraq, your vote against the restoration of habeas corpus is a violation against the U.S. Constitution.
It is the very proponents of a strict constructionist reading of the law that are the first to usurp the foundation of our democracy.
As a reminder, Section 9 of the Constitution ensures that “[t]he privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when, in cases of rebellion or invasion, the public safety may require it”.
There is no internal rebellion nor an invasion, but there is an insidious disintegration of our freedoms based on fear.
Democracy and freedom is not for the fearful. Supporting our Constitution and Bill of Rights takes courage especially during uncertain times. In not supporting the restoration of a fundamental guarantee of our Constitution you have not shown courage and it is disappointing.
With respect,
JS
This no vote will go over swell with the military families.
seems to me it is about time to make a media campaign on the conduct of the republicans in the senate.
kevin drum has a very interesting chart up again today, from mcclatchy i think, which indicates the extent of their obstruction on legislation of all kinds.
giving the senate republicans, as a group, a creative name – o.k., more than one name would permitted -
together with some persistent spotlighting of examples of their conduct,
might be very useful in changing that conduct.
Hey, DeminUtah @69–
I’m with you on the quality(?) of our Utah congressional delegation. Have you found a useful way to talk with them or get their attention? My calls to their offices have, with a couple of exceptions, felt like I completely wasted my time, and I tend to get form letters back that ignore my points or questions or requests. Thought I’d call to at least tell them about my anger at their votes today–think it would do any good?
This whole situation is screwed up….Lieberman is head of a Democrat Committee Chair yet votes with the Repbulican on everything. Harry Reid needs to explain he is the one that got us into this mess with Lieberman. These are crucial times for Democrats and the last we need is a chair warmer.
What a pig.
AAAH!!! My noble junior senator has struck again.
I had a few amusing moments when I called his office to inquire about how to begin Impeachment proceedings and if we had a mechanism for recall elections in Ct.
I have always disliked him but the rage began several years ago.I had been reading about one of those “unavoidable unfortunate incidents” that happened to kill about a dozen Iraqi children.
I turned on the television and Joe and Hillary were on,grandstanding about violence in videogames and the threat to America’s children.
Now,if you had told me a few years back that an old commie like me would be donating money to a millionaire businessman from Greenwich Ct.I would have thought you were off your rocker.
It is tragic that we failed, but many of us here in Ct tried really hard to retire that sanctimonious jerk.
When I spoke to his staff today I suggested that he may be more comfortable as a politician in Iran or Syria as his values seemed to be more in line with those he professes to hate than with those of us he professes to serve.
He really loved him some habeas when he was CT AG.
TheOtherWA @ 8
Joe’s election was a republican effort. It was the republicans who voted him back in. Backed by tons of republican monies and efforts, as far away as the White House, the holy schmoe was voted in. I want to stress the point that most, if not all, democrats did not vote for him. I also want to add that CT has a far larger republican population than reported. We have a republican governor! The election of the holy schmoe, was the final flipping of the bird by republicans to the national ‘inevitable’ outcome of democratic winnings. Republicans, both nationally and statewide, remain happy with their choice.
Joe Lieberman, the final republican victory!
The Republican Party, who Lieberman supports, is a criminal organization, since W took over. First it is an unjustified war in Iraq, then it is shredding the Constitution. Let’s not forget tax cuts for the wealthy, who don’t need them, which begets hugh deficits. I think of Republicans as RepubliCROOKS or RepubliCRIMINALS.
