The site of Officer Dave Karsnia’s takedown of GOP Senator Larry E. Craig (R-ID) is inundated with tourists snapping photos on their cell phones.
The restroom in the Lindbergh terminal at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport where Sen. Larry Craig was arrested in June has become a stop for travelers flying through, the Idaho Statesman reports.
A Minneapolis couple flying to Guatemala took the opportunity to see the infamous restroom. “We had to just stop and check out the bathroom,” Sally Westby told the Statesman. “In fact, it’s Jon’s second time – he was here last week already.” Jon, Sally’s husband, said, “I checked it out. It’s the second stall from the right.”
[snip]
Airport employees and vendors have been getting many requests for directions to the spot that has resulted in one of this year’s biggest political scandals. “There’ve been a lot of people coming to see it,” an employee of Inmotion Entertainment told the Statesman. “I’ve been asked several times to take photographs of people in front of the bathroom.”
Gee Butler of Royal Zino Shoeshine added, “People have been going inside, taking pictures of the stall, taking pictures outside the bathroom door – man, it’s been crazy.”
That’s gotta cut down on the romance factor. Wonder what sting Officer Dave K is up to now?
(youtube of the Erie Players’ “Officer Krupke” scene from West Side Story)
UPDATE: Howie’s got more, including the reminder that delegates to next year’s GOP presidential nominating convention will be able to stop by the newest airport tourist site on their way to vote for a nominee!
UPDATE NUMBER TWO: FDL Book Salon guest author and ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero announced that the ACLU has filed an amicus brief in Senator Craig’s case, saying that the foot-tapping was protected speech:
“We clearly lay out what is the doctrine in terms of what speech is and is not protected,” Romero said. “To be able to solicit sex in private, in public spaces, for instance, is constitutionally protected speech.”
Jeralyn Merritt notes the irony of Craig, not always a friend of civil liberties, being befriended by the ACLU in his current case.

Well, okay then.
I love the fact that the ACLU is taking this on. Gotta piss off the Fox Snoozies!
There’s also the irony of Craig voting AGAINST the restoration of habeas corpus earlier today. You’d think that of all the folks in the Senate, he would be most concerned about being able to have your day in court.
Of course, he’s not worried about your day in court — he’s worried about his.

AT JTA

Ehud Olmert’s top deputy drew fire for outlining an Israeli plan to divide control of Jerusalem.
Vice Premier Haim Ramon revealed this week that a peace proposal he has drafted would cede to the Palestinians control of Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem, while Israel would retain the western parts of the city and Jewish sites in the Old City such as the Western Wall and Jewish Quarter.
Ramon hinted that Israel also would relinquish at least some control of the Temple Mount, which houses two major Muslim shrines.
“In the area of the ’sacred basin’ there will be a special arrangement giving expression to all of Israel’s special interests in managing holy sites,” he wrote in a letter to a Jerusalem city councilman, a copy of which was obtained by JTA.
The suggestion that the Olmert government might be willing to cede Judaism’s most sacred site to the Palestinians drew right-wing ire. Ramon said his plan is consistent with the Israeli-Palestinian vision set out by President Bush in the U.S.-led “road map.”
OT after only five comments?
Kathleen, at least give folks a chance to look at the post and its topic, before you go OT. It’s also a tad rude to the author of the main post.
It’s the revenge of Clinton’s pen*s! The Reethugs chose to make the Genitals of Other People the real meaning of GOP, and now they get to reap the whirlwind. Dave Vitter in diapers, Larry Craig seeking some anonymous bathroom dick, Patrick McHenry, Ken Mehlman, Condi Rice as co-habiting carpet muncher, and coming soon, Mitch McConnell, Dave Dreir, Huckleberry Graham, an endless parade of latent homosexual macho posturers and sexual perverts. Dicks, dicks, dicks. And a clit. Oh, what a lovely summer!

This restroom had gotten lotsa publicity at websites devoted to sharing information about such places. Despite his discretion, I have to wonder if Officer Dave Karsia’s been waiting for the publicity and the photo-seeking tourists. Now that the restroom romance is ruined, Dave can go back to dealing with outta-control airport carts running over former Senator George McGovern.

Half-million signers demand two states
09/19/2007
More than a half-million Israelis and Palestinians have signed a petition demanding a two-state solution.
The OneVoice Movement said Tuesday it had exceeded its goal — four months early — of 500,000 signatures, with 262,008 Israelis and 274,435 Palestinians signing on.
The petition calls on Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to immediately start negotiations and arrive at an agreement by Oct. 18, 2008 — exactly one year after planned rallies in Jericho and Tel Aviv, as well as satellite events in Washington, London and Ottawa.
It calls for the sides to “recognize the right of both peoples to independence, sovereignty, freedom, justice, dignity, respect, national security, personal safety, and economic viability” and to “implement concrete confidence-building measures that will improve the lives of the Palestinian and Israeli people, including ensuring freedom of movement for ordinary civilians and fostering education against incitement on both sides.”
OneVoice, describing itself as a “youth-led” movement, is funded primarily by Daniel Lubetzky, a Mexican-Jewish entrepreneur. It has the support of, among others, Sheik Taysir Al-Tamimi, the top Palestinian religious judge; Dennis Ross, a former top U.S. Mideast peace envoy now advising presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.); Dov Lautman, a leading Israeli industrialist; and Sir Jonathan Sacks, the British chief rabbi.
and, let’s not forget that this is the guy who flashed his business card and was in effect, claiming privilege. So, perhaps he feels he doesn’t NEED Habeas.
Obviously he needs better business cards though.

Larry Craig’s impact on teh GOP will be longlasting.

P.S. Countdown was a giant slab of crap today. That show suffers when Keith doesn’t have editorial veto.
And if people have not noticed the bloggers here at FDL often use the links and ideas that people share and research and then expand on the topic.
Arrrrh!!! Shiva’ me timbers! Make that swab Larry Craig walk da plank to Davey Jones’ locker! Arrrh!

Recall that Alison got a stern lecture from Keith about her comments regarding Wendy Vitter’s press conference garb, after his break. I was surprised to see Alison, after Amy Robot had subbed for Keith — I wonder what control he has over the broadcast when he’s not there? Clearly he “owns” or owns WPITW, but may have little else to say about the content in his absence.
I don’t think this is the kind of tourist business Minneapolis was hoping for. And to have to follow it with the republican convention, well…

This is pretty much the official position of the Israeli government.
Why in the world would anyone want a pix of the Larry Craig bathroom stall? It’s almost in a class of wanting to view an execution. Both desires are sick.
AZ Matt @ 35
Oh, my, I had forgotten about today being TLAPD.
This is sick.. we live in a sick country. 70 year olds are assaulted by police for not watering their lawns and a bathroom male gay prostitution hang-out at an airport has become a national tourist attraction. It’s sickening, and I feel sick. I just don’t get it anymore… maybe we deserve to be ruled by murderous thieves.

Now MSP can do “Craig tapped here.” Any others?
On the topic of Craig I did like the point that Matthews made one night on Hardball. He brought up how the Republicans were being hypocritical by supporting Vitter on the prostitute issue (he was not pushed to get out) and yet Craig has been encouraged to get out because of the “gay” issue.
Matthews also shared that the first time that Vitter appeared in front of a group of Republicans they gave him a standing ovation (the good old boys except if you are Clinton)…they sure did not do that for Craig

Ann in AZ @ 91
Let me just pop in here and make some added suggestions for folk who want more choices.
From having spent lots of time in the past as an enforced “shut-in” with only my pupster as company, I know what is meant by the need sometimes for something besides silence.
Discovering internet radio has been a wonder for me.
We listen quite a lot to a station out of Chesapeake called “The Nineteen-Twenties Radio Network.” In spite of the name, they play lots of stuff 24/7 from 1900 through 1949.
In the evenings, every weeknight, they play the old radio shows. Such as Green Hornet, Phillip Marlowe Mysteries, the Mel Blanc Comedy Hour, etc. etc. My favorite is the Hallmark Theater — just like the “Hallmark Hall of Fame” specials on teevee, but the radio format many years prior to television.
On the Hallmark program, I’ve had the pleasure of hearing a very young Gregory Peck doing an Ernest Hemingway short story. They play lots of these Hallmark programs, radio’s version of “high-brow” stuff.
And they don’t just play the programs themselves, but the original commercial advertising which aired at the time — they are always a hoot.
Turns out there was a program I had never heard of called “Gangbusters” which put out alerts for citizens to help catch criminals on the loose (sort of like Adam Walsh’s teevee show, America’s Most Wanted). On a recent episode, the person interviewing an FBI agent was none other than “Colonel Norman Schwarzkopf”!!! Interesting!
When it’s not a weeknight evening, they play music from the twenties with lots of Bessie Smith and Lady Day and New Orleans jazz, and flapper music for dancing, and then other special shows featuring WWII-era music, lots of fun with the Andrew Sisters and Vera Lynn and suchlike. I especially enjoy programs from during the Depression era — they make me feel like I’m boning up in the morale department for what’s coming in Depression Part Deux.
During the deep dark middle of the night they play music from BEFORE the twenties, and in that respect they’re just like another station which features music from the EIGHTEEN-NINETIES on wax cylinder through up to 1920.
But beyond my quirky choices, there are zillions of other internet radio stations with every type of music imaginable, and PLENTY of interesting talk stations, talk of every stripe – both political and non-political.
The music can be as unusual and exotic as you like — Greek folk music, French chansons, South American music from the Andes, etc. etc. Every type of jazz imaginable. Many thousands of options out there.
We’re never bored. And we never watch teevee when teevee sucks (which is most of the time).
Another advantage of listening to internet radio (via wireless speakers which allow us to play it in any room in the house) is that we can do other things at the same time — work on cleaning the kitchen, Mr. K8 working on fix-it jobs etc.
And the imagination of creating your own visual images inherent in LISTENING rather than WATCHING (and being glued to the screen) is good for this aging brain, I think. It’s much less mentally passive.
Just an added suggestion for folks looking for something different. We have many more choices for amusement or entertainment or even for learning stuff than what the current corporate powers want to force feed us.
McConnell stood still as a statue. The awkward quartet remained in place for a full minute until Craig retreated to a safer spot from which to cast a wary eye at the suddenly crowded press gallery.
I noticed today that when Mary Landrieu shows up to vote – nobody talks to her either.

Not for the Palestinians.
Mitch we all ready know that we disagree on this issue. But I am firmly in Jimmy Carters, Amy Goodmans and Norman Finkelsteins camp on this issue. Carters book Palestine Peace:Not Apartheid is a great read.
I have read endlessly about this issue for 25 years from both sides, I have read about the history of Zionism and I have several friends who have been to Israel 14 times and lived with the Palestinians for close to six years and have heard detailed reports about their times there.
What I would sincerely like to see is a resolution on this issue. I am Pro-Palestine Pro-Israel. But I do think Israel needs to move over, get out of the occupied territories, sign the non-proliferation treaty, share the water and stop destroying Palestinians means to make a living (tearing down olive trees etc).
We know who has the upper hand here. Israel needs to start bending more before they do themselves more harm than good.

I just got a kick outta the husband having checked out the stall a week earlier — and apparently alone! (these people appear in the post).
Someone in one of those stalls that tapped their foot, might have been from Peru.
” People who ventured near the site of the Sep. 15 strike by the “supposed” meteorite were affected by dizziness, vomiting and skin lesions, the ministry said yesterday in a statement on its Web site. Among the people afflicted were eight police officers who went to the crater near the southeastern towns of Carancas and Desaguadero, the ministry said.
The object that crashed to Earth created a crater 15 meters (50 feet) wide and 5 meters deep, the ministry said. Locals said they became ill after handling a luminous substance at the site that they thought might be valuable, according to the statement.
“Blood tests are being carried out on most of the patients to determine what they’re suffering from,” the ministry said.” WTF???
I’m thinking, volcano gases???? Like the gases that killed the people in Italy???? Recent earthquakes, maybe something is about to blow down there! Pompeii anyone?

I think the ACLU picks their cases for their merit and the possible publicity value. They’ve certainly got their money’s worth out of an amicus brief that needed about three hours of a lawyer’s time and a FedEx bill.
Plus there’s the nice feeling of coming to the aid of someone who’s excoriated you his entire career.

For Larry Craig. Night all.

It was made by Owsley, the dude who bought the Dead there sound system. White rabbit was another of his ware’s along with Orange Sunshine. Sigh.
Petrocelli @ 123
Hey Petrocelli! I think it’s a really good move on the part of ACLU for a couple of reasons. First, because Vitter should not receive special treatment/straight sex over Vitter/gay sex. Secondly, it shows the republicans that the ACLU is non-partisan. Smart.
Not to worry. Condi Rice is on the scene in the Middle East.
Hugh @ 110
Dennis Ross’s mythology
http://time-blog.com/middle_ea…..y_5_1.html
“Is this really the best America can do? Absent from Ross’s thinking is any notion that America should exert some bold leadership, or, for that matter, give due respect to the courageous albeit belated efforts of Arab leaders to meet Israel half-way.
In presenting his plan, Ross starts by scoffing at Fatah’s recent decision to enter a national unity government with Hamas. Instead of seeing it as a way of bolstering the politically weakened Abbas and perhaps luring Hamas toward peace, as the Saudis did when they brokered the Palestinian agreement in Mecca, Ross is quick to see “a return to the pre-Oslo period when diplomacy was based on rejection and denial.”

So what’s up with Vitter? Any new poop on him?

I’m just a bit frustrated that Mark Foley might not be prosecuted due to the statute of limitations and now Craig might get off scot free … the ACLU is congratulated for defending Craig while Elizabeth Edwards gets called out for “repeating Rep talking points” … help me to understand this.
BigMitch @ 154

Yeah.. they have a dungeon-level common room where child wizards like shrub and Kerry duel with wands
Define “wands”.
On second thought – nah.

“Big Fat Ugly Bug-Faced Baby-Eating O’Brian?” Classic.
Blub @ 146
The funny thing about Skull and Bones is that members — and you’re a member for life — must leave the room when it’s mentioned. I have to wonder if that accounts for John Kerry’s inability to intervene on behalf of young Andrew Meyer the other evening — just paralyzed by the rules of the game, since Meyer had asked him about his membership in S&B.
The Senate rethuglicans are running a race for re-eletion — a diaper derby!

Ever see the movie where John Ritter and another guy had a fight in a dark motel room with glow in the dark condoms on? Hilarious, they get busted for “cock fighting”.

I’m not sure that I can, but as a longtime supporter of the ACLU (through Nazis, Klan, etc. as well as Patriot Act, NSA Spying etc.) I would just point out that in the greater sense they are not just defending a Republican senator, they are defending all victims of sting operations in violation of the Bill of Rights. At least, that’s the theory.
Do you think that’s about right, Teddy?

enny Morris’s Shocking Interview
By Baruch Kimmerling
The Israeli historian Benny Morris did it again. Morris is not only a historian with impressive achievements but also an Israeli and international icon. One year after the publication of his book The Birth of Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947-1949, published in 1987, he proclaimed himself a “new historian.” He become the great guru of a small imaginary group appointed by him and including mainly Avi Shlaim, Uri Milstein and Ilan Pappé. Membership in this group varied from time to time according to Morris’s sympathy or antipathy.

Great pictures. The sea of signs at the anti-invasion marches have been amazing. I was surprised by how many Fascist signs older people were carrying at the marches before the invasion. More and more people began to carry them at each successive march in D.C. and New York.

burnspbesq @ 217
Edited to express my question. Mitch
Petrocelli @ 213
Hey TSF and other Firepups, here’s my first draft to the Governator … am requesting input before sending:
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
I strongly propose that you join the 21st century and afford equal rights to all Americans, including members of the Gay/Lesbian community. America lags other First World countries in supporting Gay/Lesbian rights to marriage and equal rights under such laws.
You will agree that you would have not reached such success, if laws were enacted that prevented non- Americans from having equal opportunity in this country. Search your soul and you will find that true courage means supporting equal rights for those, whose lifestyle might contradict but not impede your own.
American cannot call itself a beacon of freedom when it so readily denies basic human rights to a segment of its citizens.
Yours Sincerely,
…
burnspbesq @ 217
I know the idea that John Kerry and George Bush have a secret forum and a secret body of knowledge on which they both totally agree, have sworn to carry out, and sworn to keep secret, seems to me uncomfortably close to star-chamber stuff. I know, in all probability, harmless…but….
Kathleen @ 214
Does indeed. Thanks.
ACLU’s defense of Nazi’s in Skokie Illinois was NOT their finest hour. Used a Jewish lawyer for effect. That is not a principled defense of the 1st Ammendment. That is complicity in an effort to be unduly provocative. The right to free speech is inviolate. But that wasn’t the only point that needed to be made. The Nazi’s succeeded in using the Constitution against us. The ACLU helped.
Kathryn in MA @ 211

TeddySanFran @ 218
He probably is, by registration, but they didn’t endorse him as their candidate and he ran as an indie. The business community and the rethug community wound up backing him as the worst of two alternatives against pro-labor/pro-rent control/anti-developer/pro-environmental conservation Donna Frye (the surfer councillor), after their own rethug candidate was wiped out in the first special election. Frye scared the traditional rethugs to death. Since then, he’s been trying to ingratiate himself with the rethug party, since they would be the only base he might conceivably be able to develop.. .otherwise, i think (and hope) he’s a one-termer. Please move to San Diego.. and vote for Donna in the next election.. just for spite.
Hugh @ 186

From what I’ve read and heard, there was very little illegal that went on in that men’s room. I think Officer Dave would have been wise to let things, um, proceed a bit before waving his badge. It’s not illegal to meet someone for gay sex; public sex is illegal, but hooking up for sex is not. Otherwise, there’d be lotsa gay bars outta business.
On the other hand, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy, with a nicer Minority Leader!
BigMitch @ 228
I detest the Nazis and the KKK but the Constitution gives us freedom of speech and I had a really hard time with this until I realized that meant everything (except yelling fire). If we were only free to do and say “nice” and pleasant things what good would it do?

OK, poor Kirk ended up feeling horrid about this last night. I’m not prone to that, so here goes.
Kathleen: while your posts are well documented and you do not use inflammatory language, you very obviously have one and only one priority – to get the information out there, no matter how OT it is. And it is almost always wildly OT.
Big Mitch: While you are only OT on issues pertaining to shorn-haired, imperialist baseball teams, and your posts are heart-felt, they are rarely documented and usually cherry picked in what you respond to.
So: Kathleen, if the post count isn’t past 100, shut up. And Big Mitch, if you don’t have a reasonable link to counter it, shut up.
I don’t really give an eff if I’ve lost 2 friends. But if you follow my advice, maybe you guys won’t each lose a few hundred.

Petrocelli @ 246
It really is worth it
I’m always amused when attorneys tell me the point of view they passionately disagree with is “not principled”.
Sez who?
I’m am so glad I’ve spent my educational and professional life studying and maserting empirical information leading to testable hypotheses about the material world.
That’s science – and medicine is applied biology.
I watch some attorneys use their training and parse words to support any assertion they please – deliberately seeking to create as large a fact-free zone as possible.
Of course, the “solutions” cooked up in the fact-free zones always fail. Persuasion of the audience doth not a testable hypothesis make.
I so respect attorneys like those in the ACLU who have the wisdom to transcend the parties and look beyond to fundamental issues of Constitutional rights. I’m glad the ACLU understands that our rights are first denied to the most objectionable among us.
I used to think all members of the Bar had the same gifts.
Wish they did – we’d live in bette world ad have more factual discussions and solutions.
‘Til then, there’s always bombast, bluster, and pissing on the drapes.
Of course – if one seeks conflict – that’s the goal all along.
What a sad behavioral trap for anyone to inhabit.
bonkers @ 242
One has to appreciate the deep personal sacrifice Vitter and Craig are making here for their country… ignoring their long-held and deeply progressive views about human rights — as expressed through their own life choices about issues such as sexuality — to serve the greater good of their party, by voting for giving Dear Leader the tools he says he needs to fight tuhrurists. One has to salute these two brave Wide Stancers for their stand on principle ;-P (for clarity: this is sarcasm.. not a troll comment)
BigMitch @ 61
I hate it when talk like a pirate day isn’t on a school day for me. It’s pretty cool to be able to get 110 kids to go “AAaarrrggghhhh!” together.
Is the Minneapolis-St. Paul rivalry going to play into this Craig tourism thing? How can St. Paul catch up? Maybe they’ll try and get a prominent pol busted in St. Paul during the GOP convention, so that they can be back on the map.
GordonM @ 245
I disagree and thats o.k.

Some of what the two of them point out is valid. Kathleen, in my opinion, you could link to far fewer links that you consider the most important and relevant to the topic. I agree, Big Mitch, that you take one position without links to back it up. Not saying you’re wrong, just that we don’t take opinion as fact.
You guys are both great, and the P/I situation is miserable and most important. Just maybe consider other issues and be considerate of the topic at hand?
Gordon M’s response proves the point of how outraged people get about this issue. Mitch and I were not even arguing yet Gordon went on the attack.
