there has been an insinuation that i am biased (and i presume bigoted) and only chastize certain people in my moderating

i seriously thought that i was pretty neutral in moderating but now i am worried that perhaps i have not been. being a public mod, as opposed to all the other mods here at the lake, is a very fine line to walk and i want to know if i have crossed that line.

No. You are extremely fair, even handed, and gentle. There may be some people who are simply over sensitive to correction.

No one at FDL is going to tell you the truth. Most not all but most FDLer’s roll over as soon as one of the Mods, CHS or Jane (very seldom) over reach.

Fleischer’s pet propaganda project, Freedom Swatch, which is exactly what the Righty Screamers claim MoveOn is, a millionaire-funded pressure group dedicated entirely to spewing filthy lies and propaganda about the war. Imagine that.

Ah I remember when Moveon was just a little group probably extended by someone’s pet dog and a dirty hippy hairdo or two. And still it hasn’t managed to infiltrate MSM like a Scaife outfit.

I don’t know what to do with all of the global warming info in my head. I have processed it intellectually but not emotionally. Will my 30 something children live to see 60?

My single biggest concern is the world. How badly have we damaged it? Too effin many of us, using too effin many resources. I try to make my impact light.

Arica: Between 350 and 600 million people will suffer water shortages or increased competition for water. Yields from agriculture could fall by half by 2020 while arid areas will rise by up to 8 per cent. The number of sub-Saharan species at risk of extinction will rise by at least 10 per cent.

Asia: Up to a billion people will suffer water shortages as supplies dwindle with the melting of Himalayan glaciers. Maize and wheat yields will fall by up to 5 per cent in India; rice crops in China will drop by up to 12 per cent. Increased risk of coastal flooding.

Australia/New Zealand: Between 3,000 and 5,000 more heat-related deaths a year. Water supplies will no longer be guaranteed in parts of southern and eastern Australia by 2030. Annual bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef.

Europe: Warmer temperatures will increase wheat yields by up to 25 per cent in the north but water availability will drop in the south by up to a quarter. Heatwaves, forest fires and extreme weather events such as flash floods will be more frequent. New diseases will appear.

Latin America: Up to 77 million people will face water shortages and tropical glaciers will disappear. Tropical forests will become savanna and there will be increased risk of coastal flooding in low-lying areas such as El Salvador and Guyana.

North America: Crop yields will increase by up to 20 per cent due to warmer temperatures but economic damage from extreme weather events such as Hurricane Katrina will continue increasing.

Polar regions: The seasonal thaw of permafrost will increase by 15 per cent and the overall extent of the permafrost will shrink by about 20 per cent. Indigenous communities such as the Inuit face loss of traditional lifestyle.

Small islands: Low-lying islands are particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels with the Maldives already suffering land loss.

Five years ago this was a possibility. Now it is a near-certainty.

In just years – within the next two Presidential terms.

What happens then – ten years out?

Well, the positive feedback loops may have started. A France-size chunk of Siberian tundra has begun to melt, relasing methane from frozen peat.

And methane is a potent greenhouse gas. The more we get, the more the permafrost melts.

One trillion dollars squandered in Iraq.

The US can afford the cost of changing to a carbon-neutral economy.

On this planet, Americans make up five percent of the planet’s population and consume one-fifth of the planet’s scarcest resources.

The planet can’t afford our failure to adopt a carbon-neutral economy.

Should we fail do so in the next two decades, those who are children now will die terrible deaths.

Should we fail to begin in the next few years, those who are children now will die terrible deaths.

Two degrees is 91-100% likely.

I wish! I haven’t finished the revisions, and I’m corresponding with some people about the propriety of one of the revision concepts.

Back in 2004, when we tried to premiere The Skies are Weeping in Anchorage, an Israeli-American blogger created a protest meme against my work, which keeps recurring when people present or create art about Rachel Corrie – the All the Other Rachels meme.

Essentially, there have been, since before the First Intifada, Israeli or American-Israeli women killed in terrorist attacks in Israel who were named “Rachel.” At premieres of “Skies” and of “My Name is Rachel Corrie,” protesters invariably appear with signs and handouts based on the material of the second link above, and show up at discussion groups at these peformances, asking “Why not write music about all these other Rachels.”

That has been going on for three and 1/2 years now, and nobody seems to have written the music. I’ve started on a piece about that, but I’m not sure it would really be appreciated, from me, by the originators of the meme. When I wrote “The Skies,” I asked permission to do the project from the Corrie family, and they were in on the creative process. I would want them and the families of “all the other Rachels” involved in this in the same way, which is complicated, to say the least!
