Andy Williams singing Henry Mancini’s Moon River…
Lindsey Graham has his panties in a wad because the majority of Americans would like to hold him and other Republicans accountable for being Bush Administration rubber stamps. From the floor of the Senate today:
Many of us up for re-election this year. This Iraq War has become one big political commercial. There are commercials being run out there — I don’t know if they are on the air this moment — but every time there is a vote in this body, a Republican in a…uh…tough state will have a [sic] ad saying “Senator so-and-so has voted six times not to withdraw from Iraq.” There are political commercials being run around every policy debate we have regarding this war. This is a political consultants dream, this war. Well, this war is not about the next election. This war is about generations to come. And the commercials will keep coming. Every time we have a vote like this, somebody is going to take our work product, put together an ad, and try to get some political momentum from the dialogue we have on the floor.
It’s called politics, Lindsey. And public accountability. People don’t trust you, they don’t trust George Bush, and they don’t trust the Republican party – and they sure as hell aren’t willing to risk America’s soldiers on more and more failure because you, the GOP and George Bush want to save your own political bacon. Our soldiers and their families deserve a helluva lot better than they are getting at the moment, and it is well past time that you faced up to your role in their maltreatment — you and every other rubber stamp out there.
You don’t like the heat? Then get out of the Senate.
In case anyone is wondering, Afghanistan is not going so swimmingly either. Heckuva job…please keep those calls going, folks, because your voices are necessary to force change within the Beltway. Thanks so much to everyone who has made them so far. You guys rock.
(Oh, and Turncoat Joe? You still suck.)
UPDATE: Froomkin hits some of the same notes. Great column today.

Good morning Christy.
We’re watching! And we remember…
Christy!
Day-yum, some fine zed competition here…
Christy ! Singles ! Hi, Raven when you get here.
You don’t like the heat? Then get out of the Senate.
It’s not the heat – it’s those damn constituents. And polls. And free speech.
All of those things that keep hindering Lindsey in his never-ending quest to be a good little fascist.
Huckleberry Fiend
FYT, Christy.
Apparently that ad got somebody’s attention! “Work Product” what an euphemism for the crapola old Huck spews. At one time I actually thought him to be somewhat on the side of the law. I should have known better, as he really shed his skin of moderation and revealed himself as the snake he is when the going got tough.
Here goes thart greasy motherfucker saxby.
Huckleberry’s sense of entitlement is disgusting, however not at all surprising.
How dare someone actually make little mr. pissypants actually politic for his seat? The nerve!!!
raven @ 10
or as someone earlier called him:
Sexless Chambly
Huckleberry Bitch.
Nice to see they’re finally taking notice of the opposition. But they’re being cry babies about it! Really, on top of everything else, do they have to whine about the First Amendment?
peanutbutter @ 5
You bet ya…
raven at 10 — That’s Saxby “No Show For Voting” Chambliss? *g*
raven @ 10
Republi-robot
Ugh. Graham is such a disgusting little weasel.
If you think the commercials reflect badly on you, Lindsay, maybe you should VOTE DIFFERENTLY.
I hate that weasel.
I wish Craig would get some revenge by OUTING the little twit on his way out the door.
Hey, freinds.
I’m lurking today.
Supporting you all.
But sometimes it’s better for me just to read.
jayt @ 18
The problem is that most of these idiots in Georgia agree with him.
demi @ 19
Hi demi. Try to relax. Yesterday was rough on many of us.
Chambliss calling us stupid if we don’t agree that there’s been substantial progress.
Re: Turncoat Joe:
On Monday, Joe-Lie registered in Stamford, CT to vote as a Dem.
Helen @ 22
That’s rich. MORON!
raven @ 20
As an Indiana native, I never thought I’d say this – but you have my deepest sympathy.
Helen @ 22 – did he define progress? Cuz if he defines it as more dead bodies, he’s right.
This sh*t is so immoral.
kdh22 @ 21
*g*
Yep. GA has two fine Repug senators…*g*
So, Sen. Graham is sort of annoyed that people are actually paying attention to what people are doing in Congress — and have access to it through the internet — and talk about it to one another — and groups put together ads for newspapers and tv to tell constituents what their representatives are doing?
He’s annoyed?
I guess he’d rather it be a big dark backroom secret and that we go back to sleep.
Sorry to give you the news, Lindsey – you missed it – the Internet changes EVERYTHING.
Does Saxby Chambliss have a nickname yet? Limit the authority of the president indeed. How about taking “the toys” out of Chimperers sweaty grip.
So disgusted with how Huckleberry and other Republicans can proudly state that they are protecting “freedom” by blocking Habeas Corpus.
If you’d like an extra dose of outrage with your plate-fulla anger today, check out this truly stunning report (originally from WaPo, summarized on TPM):
How we’re providing “religious enlightenment” to prisoners as young as 11 in Iraq
It is astonishing to the lengths people in the Pentagon will go to abuse people. It’s amazing to me how our military is “educating” prisoners (oops, they call them “detainees”) in Iraq. Make sure to check out the part about the polygraphs.
This occupation doesn’t “win the hearts and minds” of the Iraqis.
This type of psychological work is not supposed to be what our military is for.
I’m so mad, I could spit right now.
Biodun @ 23
Let me see if I understand this. His personal affiliation, as a single American voter, is Democratic Party. However, in his official capacity as one of the Senators from Connecticutt, he represents the Independents for Conn. or whatever it was called?
Pish.
Republicans don’t think it’s fair to run ads with facts about their voting records.
But swiftboating someone is just fine…
They make the pot who calls the kettle black seem reasonable.
jayt @ 25
I live in the People’s Republic of Athens.
I had to mute my television. Saxby Chambliss makes me grind my teeth.
peanutbutter, his party affiliation in the Senate is the “Conneticut for Lieberman” party. Never forget, it is ALL ABOUT HIM.
Sanctimonious little bastard. I’ll listen to Chimpy drone on before I will droopy dog HoJo.
demi @ 19
I’m with you, Demi.
It’s all I can do lately to contain my rage at the lack of outrage in this country at everything this group has done to us for generations to come.
That’s “Connecticut for Lieberman”, peanutbutter. Because, as usual, it’s all about Joe.
landofthefree @31:
So that’s what the light sticks are for. Enlightenment.
I’m getting a vibe that the Webb Amendment is going to pass – that the R’s are just pissin’ into the wind – and that the D’s aren’t putting forward much substantive argument because they know the vote’s locked up.
ghod, I hope I’m right.
Problem is folks, we can’t trust the Dem’s either.
Reid folded again, Pelosi’s busy having her hair quaffed. There are no adults in charge.
leinie @ 36
As I said downstairs, whenever you talk about ANY senator that is the definition of their service: it’s all about them, blowhard, narcissitic bastards.
brendan @ 39
And late night all male Repub-like entertainment
raven @ 34
You mean Michael Stipe-land? ;-)

In case you missed it, Naomi Klein was interviewed at length by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now! on Monday, and you can watch the show online replay.
It really lays out the whole Cheney-Bush game plan, and (surprise) playing fair is not part of the game plan (my sense of the gist of her argument). This is an important book that will be discussed a lot, I think.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Lindsay Graham is in on the plan.

Bushi @ 41
Did you say something?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 38
IIRC, after the general election, someone else came in and Joined the CT for Lieberman” party, created party “rules” and by-laws since Joe hadn’t and set it up that Joe was ineligible for his supposed party.
Kinda neat actually in a viral sort of way.

Christy Hardin Smith @ 38
Lovely. Seems my wild ass guess was way off the mark. I know I’ve seen the proper party name before, guess my brane just refused to remember something so blatantly self revealing about him :-P
Christy, my mute button’s getting a workout today, too.
dakine01 @ 47
uh…yeah…kinda /s
Bushi at 41 — Your proof of that in link form would be what exactly? Don’t throw out shit without substantiating it. I am in no mood for that today — I’ve been working these issues way to hard to have people pull a bunch of unsubstantiated Eeyore bullshit in the middle of when we need to get some work done.
So either back it up — or can it.
bobschacht @ 45
This is the game plan as it was originally envisioned back in 1947 when this little seed was first germinated. It’s taken this long for it to firmly take root while everyone in the country is busy trying to tread water economically and psychically.
The vote on the Webb Amendment: It would be interesting to see which Repugs cross over. I suspect it’ll be many running for their seats in ‘08. Coleman, Collins, as examples.
Hard to believe Sen Snowe ever does anything in the interest of the people of Maine, but apparently she changed her vote to ‘aye’, for which I give grudging thanks.
Collins, on the other hand, is going to hear from me in a letter-to-the-editor in the Bangor paper – as well as a call, of course.
It’s just a matter of numbers, Lindsey.
Roughly 70% of Americans want us to end our involvment in Iraq.
Roughly all of the Republicans want to frustrate that desire.
In order for Americans to get what they want, they have to elect enough of some other party (Democrats, Independents, Socialists, Greens, New Christie Minstrels, etc) to make sure that Republicans do not get in their way anymore.
The number they are shooting for is 60 Senators to caucus with the Democrats.
There are 49 Republicans. We need to get rid of 9 of you.
It’s veey simple, really. It’s probably why you, Lindsey Graham, ran for the senate in the first place. You wanted to get enough votes to get rid of the Democratic obstruction. I would say that they Democrats were not really obstructing so much as defending the gate against the barbarians on the other side, but no matter.
No one plays politics better than a Republican. And none are more ruthless, deceitful, arrogant and dishonorable. We just need to remind Americans of that fact, over and over and over again until Nov 2008.
“You don’t like the heat? Then get out of the senate.”
Amen, Sistah! :o)
It’s political payback time Mr. Warpimp…deal with it.
OR! You could help the democrats pick a caretaker prez, and put goatboy on a political spit, and sell minutes-of-turning-time to the voters. That just might save your seat.
Or not. :o)
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 44
It appears one of my states Senators, Mary Landrieu, will vote in favor of the Webb Amendment.
Landrieu is having to walk a tight rope on this and many issues due to the largely uninformend or misinformed masses in our state i.e., the wingers have ‘em either cowering with fear (beware of the evil and murderous muslim) or pontificating with self-righteousness (homosexuality is the work of Lucifer).
Biodun @ 56
This is huge on several levels.
tpres2000 @ 57
Don’t be so quick to praise Snowe for her vote, she switched at the last second and only when she knew the amendment was safely defeated.
I had to back up my DVR to be sure that Barbara Mikulski didn’t say that our troops weren’t be attacked by IUD’s
sorry.
kdh22 @ 60
As they used to say, this oughta separate the men from the boys. IMO
Thinking Southerner @ 59
Of course, diaper sex with hookers is A-OK, as long as you’re a rethug, and you love baby jeebus.
tpres2000 @ 57
Unless, as mentioned in an earlier thread, she changed it only after finding out that the vote would fail anyway (and with repug leadership “permission”). I’d like to see her explanation first, myself.
Ditto. Let’s she how she votes on Webb. I can’t see any reason for her to oppose it, since her Iraq plan (along with Nelson, IIRC) envisages changing the mission to terrorism protection and Iraq army training so that “only” 50,000 troops or so are needed. But I won’t believe it until I see it…
james @ 55
The money shot, as it were:
I can’t tell you how much this pisses me off. Destroy entire countries, regions, countless livelihoods so you can make money??? Such people don’t even deserve to walk on the face of this planet.
jayt at 63 — Bwahahahahaha! I’m clearly tired, but that seriously cracked me up!
Ott @ 61
Thanks for pointing that out; also, I did say ‘grudging thanks’ rather than praise…
All hese Repugs are just saying the same things, a lot of old wine in new bottle. The senators already know how they’re gonna vote. So let’s just get to it.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 54
;->
Oh, and forget Diaper Dave of Louisiana…too much doo-doo stench from the nappy has infected his brain
Thinking Southerner @ 73
Brain bleach!

I have the tv muted for Kit Bond at the moment. (Because, honestly, I can’t take much more from him today.) But does he look like a crazed garden gnome to anyone else? Those rosy cheeks and the creepy gleam in his eye?
Thinking Southerner @ 73
This is hysterical! I love your phrasing!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 75
Do you have another pot of coffee brewing? Sounds like you might need it…an hour ago! :)
OK – Kit Bond is seriously pissing me off. Calling the amendment a back-door way to stop the war. Saying it won’t give them any relief. Saying they slashed the military too much in the past.
OK – so reinstate the draft, you moron.
If this does not pass – the meme has got to be that the Repugs do no support the troops.
Goopers are having migraine headaches 24/7.
It is looking more and more likely that the war in Iraq will NOT be any better when votin time comes around- and the sorry ass sonsabitches- that have been eatin Bush’s shorts at every opportunity are gonna go down in flames- meaning dem gains in all houses including the White One and lots of goopers spending interminable hours with their annoying families…
IT’S a FUCKIN CRISIS!
Oh gawd. My sib just emailed me that if we don’t fund this ‘war’ we don’t support the troops. I’m related to this person?
Kit Bond had to bring up the MoveOn.org ad…
Helen @ 78
KATRINA has made Lousiana uninhabitable for democrats- it’s now a pure gooper state- like Mississippi. Mary’s likely toast.
Ol Huckleberry’s internal polling must suckk as much as he does as a senator….GOOD RIDDANCE…Ciao Huckleberry could care less bout’ya!
Helen
I don’t know how I keep getting in the middle of your comments. Sorry
This is an interesting little post that (for me anyway) helps explain how people hung on to Boosh for so long (I mean, people *reelected* this little thug)…
Um, I don’t make misteaks . . .
It’s a very interesting blog overall, too. Hope some of you like it.
Ahgoo @ 80
We most all have those in our families. My brother spouts Rush/Sean/BillO talking points all the time in emails. My sister and I delete them and try to figure out: did the elves take our brother and leave a changling (my theory) or did he get a brain transplant when he was stationed in the Phillipines in the AF (her theory).
Ahgoo @ 80
Dood, I feel your pain.
::sigh::
Christy Hardin Smith @ 75
707 You got that right Christy!
And they only have Rumsnut to blame for the shape and size of our military. IDIOTS!
kdh22 @ 85
You need to scroll down further, past the very last closing blockquote (that has a / in front of it). If you stop at the first blank line, sometimes there’s still more further down. That’s all. (But it trips me up every now and then too.)
rwcole @ 83
Landrieu’s seat is in danger. But Howie Klein said to let her sink, since she’s Repug-lite anyway. She votes with them most of the time.
If goopers lose total control- the south becomes a political afterthought- an asterisk- a non-entity..
They’ve gotten used to representing the balance of power- they may live to see themselves become an anathama- except Arkansas, Texas, Virginia, and Florida that are well on their way to becoming dem.
Biodun @ 79
Moveon got huge milage from that ad, thanks to hiz honourableness and his colleagues. All we have to do is hit the mute & let him prattle.
Thanks mr. bond.
There’s rumors the Democrats are going to buckle and give the telecom companies retroactive immunity.
What country was this?
-GSD
I agree let Landrieu sink where she belongs. She has done nothing for New Orleans or her state. Another loser.
FISA?? Can these guys stay on topic?
Hope this gets through. I’m on a different computer up in the mountains. Hello, FDL. Being in the mountains hasn’t changed one thing. Iraq is still on the front burner boiling over. Maybe I should have kept the TV off. It was much more enjoyable visiting neighbors, going on long walks, preparing nice meals, gardening, preparing the grounds for winter.
It’s time to be a big girl again and contact my senators and active Democrats here. I don’t have a problem with making calls but it is really miserable listening to some of the Repugs continue their Yasham, massa, Yassam, massa to DoubleYou. I feel embarrassed for them. They have no feeling or concern for our troops just their own egotistical mindless devotion to stale talking points. Yuck! Kit Bonds wife or secretary needs to check his outfits before he leaves for “work” in the morning. That is hard to look at.
Someone should shut this

Well we don’t have much choice do we. It’s not like we have a life raftt that will bring a half a million dem voters back to La.
She’s a southern dem- voting the way any southern dem senator has to vote to keep their seat.
I think Kit Bond looks like he had one two many appletinis at lunch he can’t even string a sentence together without studdering.
rwcole @ 91
…just a comma?
Now Bond’s got me laffin’. He’s shocked ..SHOCKED I tell you, that people would do things just for their own political gains.

I don’t think that Lieberman will see another term- Snow MIGHT.
Ahgoo @ 80
If it were my reply to give I’d just say, “just because you say it doesn’t make it true.”
My heart is somewhat broken to learn (what I must have already subconsciously known) that my first cousin, the one I played with lots when we were tots, is big-time active in the GOP.
Of course I lay some of the blame on her upbringing. Her father (my godfather) had a death-bed conversion, calling the Bushies “thugs and thieves” who played religious folks (like Catholics – he was in the Knights of Columbus) for suckers over abortion, as his terminal illness got worse and worse.
But when my cousin was little he taught her to make her bed every day, with hospital corners so taut you could bounce a quarter off it. Her life was nothing but authoritarian discipline, day in day out, practice the piano for hours even if you hate it, etc.
So it’s no surprise that she can now play the piano technically perfectly with absolutely zero soul to it. Chopin without soul is a horror. And now I learn that she thinks (still!) that Little Boots is the Best Preznit Evah!
It makes me weep.
Good luck with your own misguided relative.
peanutbutter @ 86
This is what we are up against.
We already know the Democrats are moribund, at least the current leadership is, but it is this tenacious group of BELIEVERS in this country that represent the real impediment to change.
People actaully believe this shit. Hell, I’m sure guys in Iraq believe this shit because they are all drinking from the same poisoned well of misinformation.
It’s changing the thinking and beliefs of millions of Americans that is the real challenge for us…..the legislators are going to do whatever is in their own best interests.
We need to rescue the delusional millions roaming the streets of our towns and villages. The cities have already seen the damage.
Thinking Southerner @ 61
Wow. I’m surprised she seems to be supporting the Webb amendment. Good news.
Pope Benny and Condi would have had a great time talkin bout dresses- an what kinda slip to wear under em in the summer time.
Franco @ 111
Yeah, but for even Ratzi to snub, whee!
Sorry, took me a while to figure out Benny. I’ve never used that name, Ratzi is just too perfect for the little toad. :-P
Helen @ 122
Yeah, I’ve come across that before. So my question is, what DOES this bill give, that we’re not seeing?
Future immunity perhaps? I find this very troubling.
rwcole @ 126
But the real question is which one would be wearing Prada?
Everytime I see the Pope-a-dope, “Benny and the Jets” rushes through my mind.
james @ 131
kdh22 @ 99
Not to interject, but I just saw this over at Common Dreams
Ahgoo @ 80
My response would be something like this:
Oh, I support the troops. They need to be well-equipped, well-trained, provided the best medical care we have and treated with honor, dignity and respect. They also shouldn’t be used as pawns and targets in the middle of a bloody civil war. That’s why I’m supporting them by supporting the efforts to bring them home. Let’s spend the billions of dollars we spend every month in Iraq on securing our borders here, providing proper healthcare for the military members and veterans, and taking care of our other national issues.
peanutbutter @ 133
Hoist by the failure to take my own advice!!
I stepped away for a moment.
McCain’s back on again? Get him outta there…
GSD @ 117
Thanks. Interesting that it goes back to what Ashcroft and Comey wouldn’t sign off on. Hmmmm…
Thinking Southerner @ 61
But indulging in unorthodox sexual activity with a woman not your wife and illegally paying for it, is officially sanctioned by the dishonorable Republicans. They probably have a cafeteria list of what is allowed and disallowed.
“Let’s see here, Dave, blow-job: pitcher or catcher?”
“Pitcher”
“Male or female?”
“Female”
“Props: any sex toys? Silicone dildos, for example?”
“OK, once.”
“Pitcher or catcher?”
“Ummm, catcher.”
“*reading* If catcher, skip to question 6. Ahh, yes, male or female?”
“Female”
“Cross dressing?”
“Ahh, not technically”
“What were you wearing?”
“A diaper. But no onesie.”
“*crickets* Pampers or Depends?”
“Pampers. Pull ups.”
“Dave, I think you’re going to beat this rap. But, buddy, this $#%@ just ain’t natural. I mean, you’re a senator, fer gawd’s sakes. You don’t need to pay for it.”
“I’m sorry if I embarrassed my colleagues.”
“Damn straight. Now, go get some nice congressional aide and keep a lid on it. Send in Craig.”
Biodun @ 135
Do the Dems get to speak?
peanutbutter @ 129
I combine the two, calling him Benny the Rat. I know folks who knew him very well back in the day when he taught at Tuebingen. Uniformly, they all thought he was an insecure jerk who got his knickers in a twist over German anti-war protesters in the late sixties and early seventies. He never recovered from the sense of authority attacked.
McCain is seein a resurgence in his poll numbers- ever since the voters got a good look at the OTHER options.
OT: Apparently Blackwater wants to establish a training facility near San Diego, California (near the border). I am beyond outraged at this. There’s a petition circulating on this as well:
Blackwater: “indiscriminate killers” take action!
Biodun @ 137
move along.. nothing to see here :)
Mrs. K8 @ 141
And in my book, no matter how many times he says “Everyone was doing it,” being a member of Hitler Youth was not mandatory and Catholic priests and bishops after the war were all too quick to write “This is a good boy” notes for Nazis.
At the Iraqi market that was very much like any Indiana flea market wasn’t it Lindsey Graham who boasted that he’d bought fahve blankits far fahve bucks?
peanutbutter @ 143
Yeah… Hunter (R-Abramoff) wants to stick the facility in Filner’s (D-San Diego) district…. the rethugs don’t even want the facility. They want to inflict it on an overwhelmingly Dem constituency.
So . . . Lindsey Graham doesn’t want to suffer a far more accurate and factual version of the same fate that people like his partisan pals visited upon Max Cleland? Well, at least he can further his rug-trading prowess when he’s electorally dumped on his prissly li’l behind in ‘08.
Why is it Lindsay Graham had no problem with the politics of this war when it was used as an excuse to lambast anyone who disagreed with it as unpatriotic or a coward?
Twain @ 140
That’s a good question. Maybe they know they have the votes. So they let the Repugs blabber on and on. Like robotic buffoons.
Franco @ 96
I disagree with your take on Landrieu. She votes with the rotovirus R’s just enough to remain electable – wise strategy on her part. Since the probable alternative to Mary in La. is either a Tony Perkins clone (see fascist n’er-do-well at FRC) or our Dear Dave, I’ll take Madame Mary and a scotch every time.
GeorgeSimian @ 149
Yes, what George said.
GeorgeSimian @ 149
question is.. is he a member of the Wide Stance Caucus too?
GeorgeSimian, because he’s an f***ing hypocrite?
peanutbutter @ 143
I’ve seen the one they have in Moyock. Very impressive.
My problem with this is that if they set up “training” facilities throughout the country it makes it that much easier for them to front rapid response teams anywhere within the “Homeland” when the Fuhrer decides it’s showtime.
And for anyone here who says American troops will not fire on American citizens: Kent State and Jackson State 1970.
hackworth @ 146
I think it was fuckface Pence from Indy.
hackworth @ 146
Yep. McCain and Lindsey Graham did go to that same market that same Sunday? I don’t quite remember.
The truth is- dems can’t hold the senate without some conservative dems- Landreu is a classic example.. There may come a time when they can fill 51 seats with liberal voices- but that time is not now.
Blub @ 153
You have to ask??!!?? :)
Blub @ 147
Don’t get me started on Hunter. Just. Don’t.
Gah!
Blub @ 145
I signed the petition and will work against this as much as I can. Don’t want the disgusting creeps in my state – or any other state for that matter.
Senator from CT? I hope its Dodd. Because I will not be able to hold down my lunch if HoJoe’s coming up.
Mary seems ta be a lot better than the recently retired dem senator from La. (what’s his name?)
Blub
I love the (R-Abramoff) descriptor.
btw…. if they hire Blackwater to patrol our part of the border, there WILL be bloodshed. This place got pretty unstable during the minutemen demonstrations… nothing like incompetent thugs “patrolling” in an densely populated area, with very difficult terrain, surrounded by about a million people who basically want them all to have accidents and are very happy to provoke ‘em.
kdh22 @ 159
I’m STILL wishing that Wide Stance Craig would out Lindsay on his way out of the Senate, but I guess Lindsay was one of the few to be all kissy kissy welcome back yesterday, so Larry will be disappointing me. Again. Like the f*kcer always does.
LARRY. JUST SAY NO. You don’t have to vote with them any longer – they don’t like you. Voting with them won’t change that.
Blub @ 151
He could be elected Queen of the May.
mui @ 162
Um…
OK, I’m feeling very, very stupid, but Lieberman? and Dodd? Are? Senators? From? The? SAME? State?
Whoa.
*headkerplooie*
See ya, folks.
Gotta run off this anger.
We have a Blackwater facility in my county Jo Daviess, in Illinois. It’s called Blackwater North and the local police authorities are very happy with them for all the training help they’re getting. The local zoning director seems to be totally in kahoots with them. When Jeremy Scahill came to speak a few months ago, there were over 200 people in attendance. That’s a big deal for this little community.
We’re fighting them, but it’s uphill all the way.

I’ll bet I can guess who will be wearing the thigh-high stiletto-heeled boots and buttoned jacket.
(spew alert: WaPo link describes Rice’s outfit as provoking “shadowy daydreams” and reminiscent of a “Dominatrix!”).
I personally liked this quote I read on Slate:
rwcole @ 163
John Breaux
rwcole @ 163
John Breaux…But he voted more with the Dems than Mary does.
Does McCain get a cookie for all the blabb he did today from the Chimperer?
I hate asking what must be a really stooopid question, but how did Lindsey originally get the nick-name Huckleberry?
rwcole @ 171
They are all off-the-charts delusional!
mui @ 175
The Chimperer will rub his bald head.
portia.vz @ 58
Beautifully and concisely said.
It isn’t personal Lindsey, it’s the numbers.
….
….Actually, Lindsey, it’s personal, too.
peanutbutter @ 168
They used to be friends. The HoJoe showed his true colors.
leinie @ 154
Lindsey just works the product be it cock or gooper policy!
Mrs. K8 @ 176
I’d like to know, too. Hard to remember since it’s not a riff on his name.
(Of course, Tweety took me a while to figure out, too…)
Gotta run, have two-legged varmints to pick-up from school.
While stuck in La., don’t know what I’d do without The Lake to view (mostly a lurker) and sometimes visit.
Kudos to the whole damned bunch of you for your insights, passion, energy, and your obvious love of our country and freedom.

rwcole @ 142
I’m sticking by my prediction that he’ll have a McComeback. I think Romney & Giuliani will fade out after mudslinging each other, the core base voters for the primaries will be turned off by both, and McCain and Huckabee will be seen as the only viable candidates (as Grampa Thompson is quickly being revealed to be even more shallow on the issues than GWB).
Mrs. K8 @ 176
I thought it was for the Ah shucks facade he puts up to sometimes seem like a regular guy.
mui @ 184
Huckleberry Hound?????
I’m so sick of Republican lies. I’ve said this before here, but I really wish that some of these people would get called on their lies rather than get debated on them. Although I do love that Craig really seems to think he can just show up to work like nothing happened. These guys are totally disconnected from the world.
Thinking Southerner @ 183
Kudos to you for caring enough to keep up with these things. Be well.
mui @ 30
I’ve been searching the toobz, the best I can come up with is ‘chickenhawk supreme’.
Name: Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)
Born: 1943
Employer: The U.S. Taxpayer
Conflict Avoided: Vietnam
Notes: There are chickenhawks, and then there are chickenhawks. Saxby Chambliss is a chickenhawk supreme. He got himself elected to the Senate by casting aspersions on the patriotism of the incumbent, Democrat Max Cleland. Cleland lost three limbs serving his country in Vietnam. Saxby Chambliss was unable to serve because of his bad knees, but somehow is able to totter along as a recreational runner.
Note: the original link seems to have gone dead, but the quoted material remains spread over the internets.
You all deserve a laugh today..new words to add to the dictionary courtesy of comedian Rich Hall;

Sorry to be OT but wth..:-)
peanutbutter @ 181
While we’re on that subject, care to elucidate on the background of the tweety moniker? I was away the month they came up with that one.
rwcole @ 171
Yep.. the Dem running against the little nepotist is Mike Lumpkin

…a retired navy officer and native San Diego. Consider supporting him.. please
peanutbutter @ 143
Blackwater is Jim Crow gone military corporate. Out of control hit men and mercenaries with an itchy finger on the trigger and no accountability for this lawless company. I want to sign that petition. Is it exclusive to San Diego?

Mrs. K8 @ 176
I don’t know either, but doesn’t he look & sound like a huckster?
GeorgeSimian @ 187
George, I TOLD Larry to show up at work – I told him he owed NO LOYALTY to a party that hadn’t been loyal to him, and that he should DO THE RIGHT THING and vote for habeas.
Larry told me to fuck off, by voting the way he did.

Not so far as I can tell — only asked my name, zip and email address.
Hey Lindsey, here’s a news flash, this next election is about generations to come. Americans want their country back.
McCain has figured out that he does better if he never mentions the idiot president’t name- let alone kissin his ass in public.

leinie says
I’m STILL wishing that Wide Stance Craig would out Lindsay on his way out of the Senate, but I guess Lindsay was one of the few to be all kissy kissy welcome back yesterday, so Larry will be disappointing me. Again. Like the f*kcer always does.
LARRY. JUST SAY NO. You don’t have to vote with them any longer – they don’t like you. Voting with them won’t change that.
Larry Craig is scratching and clawing his way back into the closet. He can’t get back in there fast enough.
Too bad for Larry, cuz it ain’t gonna happen. Once a cake is baked its baked. He’s been a nasty bad bathroom boy.
(He was really comfortable being a sanctimonious hypocrite.)
twolf1 @ 198
I believe the legal term is “Discovery”, no, and what might it yield in a civil suit might prove interesting, methinks.
twolf1 @ 198
I like that.
rwcole @ 171
…which will happen only if Blackwater helps him stage a coup. Hunter is chattel to certain very spooky elements in defense contractordom…. more likely, they have a nice lobbyist job and pay packet waiting for him, as a reward for his years of devoted service to their bottom lines. Hunter, I’m convinced, stands for nothing, and has no opinions on anything, save his desire to use his long-held congressional seat for thievery… that such a creature could run for president without being exposed for what he is, is sick. Hunter’s buddy Tancredo really is a wingnut true-believer. Hunter is a just a thief with some demagogic talents and a constituency that he keeps dopped up on opiates or something.
Huckleberry.
Tweety nickname came about because of the yellow head and the perpetually sunny attitude (that’s snark ok?)
Although John gibson really should be nicknamed Tweety and Matthews should be Howdy Doody.
Graham as Huckleberry is the mush mouth accent with the aw shucks attitude some folks believe resmebles Huck finn.
hackworth @ 200
Kinda makes you wish he would have to deal with a gay marriage bill or something like that, doesn’t it?
Let’s not forget the computer voting problems. He like Bush, was not elected, they both cheated their way in. I’m not a Georgian, but I don’t think enough of them fell for the sliming of Max Cleland to get him “elected”.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 190
If Craig came out an said “Hell I’ve BLOWN half of these guys- an now they run away when they see me” I’d have a lot of respect for him.
Ott @ 192
You must be a young’un. Back in the olden days, when man first discovered cartoons, there was a Hanna-Barbera character called Huckleberry Hound. He was memorable primarily for his voice witch was a tenor with a strong southern drawl. Lindsay sounds an awful lot like him. In fact, Lindsay’s drawl is so pronounced, sometimes I think he’s exaggerating.
Ott @ 192
Tweety is based on a resemblence to Tweety Bird, who is the color of Chris Matthew’s weirdly fake looking hair. I believe Huckleberry is a reference to cartoon character Huckleberry Hound.
rwcole @ 209
OMFG, that would be even better than him outing Huckleberry.
Tweety has an enourmous yellow head that dwarfs the figure upon which it sits.
Peanutbutter @ 130: “they are concerned about the period of time when (as we now know, as a result of James Comey’s testimony) the DOJ refused to certify the legality of the surveillance activities (and threatened to resign en masse if it continued), and Bush ordered it to continue anyway.” From today’s Greenwald article.
Do you know if any of the documents the SJC is waiting for relate to this period of time and the goings on at Justice?
rwcole @ 210
Oh that would be so delicious.
Although, privately, I’m in need of the brain bleach here!
rwcole @ 214
O.K. that’s it. Gotta clean my monitor and my keyboard, plus explain why I’m laughing so loudly at work. OMG. I’m having a laugh attack. NOT.GOOD.AT.THE.WORK.
Speaking of nicknames, did everybody catch Stephen Colbert last night? On TCR, he referred to the nickname “Pumpkinhead”, saying that it has already being used as a moniker for Russert.
I laughed out loud.
(edit: I laughed because so many of us rabid sheep liberals use that term for Russert, and I’d heard someone earlier in the day who said they have right-winger relatives who swear Colbert is a conservative. Yeah, right.)
Force Clusterfuck to pardon Rover and Gonzo- the double talk twins.
Unfortunately, Craig’s probably gotten his wife to lock him back in his closet
portia.vz @ 211
Oh okay. Well I’ve never heard any of them talk, so it wasn’t obvious to me :-).
Hm. Graham…Huckleberry…Graham…Huckleberry…
Man, what it took to sign the Blackwater Petition. I’m on one strange computer. I miss my own. Nevertheless, it is signed.

More here and here and here and that doesn’t even count Ahhnold’s not well-publicized dealings with other contractors.
You ever see those guys around Ahhnold with the sunglasses and ear plugs?
Not all of them are CHP
I thought he was named Tweety cause he sits in the catbird seat and spits out whatever they throw in his cage.
cleter @ 212
can Bush be VaVoom?!
rwcole @ 210
Darn right! And that’s the only thing that would save his career at this point. He won’t do it though b/c he is in total denial. It appears that Craig believes that he has everyone fooled. Scratch scratchin’ ta get back in the closet and shet the door.
peanutbutter @ 143
I’ve said this before: How ironic would it be if Iraq succeeds in getting Blackwater out of their country, but we here in the U.S.of A. are still stuck with them.
I thought he was Tweety cause he sings like a little yellow canary.
1,603 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen landofthefree and the Firepup Patriots:
“I’m sticking to my prediction that he’ll (McCain) have a comeback.”
It doesn’t matter to the fascists, they don’t want ANYone other than a Democrat and preferably Mrs. Clinton to inherit the colossal mess that is the United States government and it’s bankrupted treasury. This is the endgame…get Mrs. Clinton in the Whitehouse to cement 150,000 occupying forces in a rump Sunni state, back Israel’s attack on Syria and Jordan’s eradication of the Palestinians from the refugee camps…see? And when the great depression hits retake power by claimin’ the Democrats “stabbed us in the back.”
It’s simple, the corporatists do NOT want a Republican President with a Democratic Congress…they want a corporatist Democrat with a marginal Democratic Congress and the rest is already written someplace.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Mrs. Clinton in the White House is the end of the idea of American democracy…if it ain’t already dead.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE FUCKIN’ AMMUNITION, IF WE CAN’T GET 60 US SENATORS TO VOTE FOR HABEAS CORPUS, THEN I WONDER IF IT AIN’T ALREADY OVER!!
QuakerGirl @ 193
Demo medics I have known (and trusted) for years who went to NOLA as Katrina struck reported Blackwater mercenaries murdering American civilians in New Orleans.
But just the black ones, so MSM didn’t really care.
I believe the medics. The behavior they report (firing without warning on unarmed civilians) is the same behavior Blackwater’t mercs show in Iraq.
Which Dem candidate for Prez will be the first to demand criminalizing private militias on US soil?
Which Dem congresscritter will be first to introduce legislation banning mercs?
Which Dem Senator will start putting “holds” on nominations and demand cloture votes (filibuster) if not successful?
[And yes, I know it won’t be Hillary of
Blue ShieldBurston-MarstellerNew York.]You go get em Christy…..
I was reading a blurb about a novel by Lisa Scottoline about “Anne Murphy the redheaded rookie lawyer…”
The last line is:
I couldn’t help but think of Firedoglake’s resident reddhedd.
Thanks, everybody, for the Huckleberry answers.
I’m convinced by the Huckleberry Hound angle — the picture of the cartoon critter nailed it for me, too. Somebody should be able to put up a side-by-side with Lindsey for one of those “separated at birth?” captions.
Mr. K8 had come in from a doc’s appt, and I had to go see what’s what for a kitchen table discussion, which is why I couldn’t thank you all individually for your responses as they came in.
Speaking of kitchen tables, we just got ours. It’s only “new” in the sense that we didn’t have one before, we just used a counter with high bar-stools before. The sucker is really old, one of those chrome and fake-marbley-looking yellow formica tops, in great condition with matching chairs. The real deal, from a dearly departed family member. And it only cost $300 (yikes!) to ship it to AZ from the Northeast.
Sorry to ramble on about it, but we’re thrilled at how this simple old-fashioned kitchen table has already facilitated more intimate and better conversations. Life around the hearth…an ancient truth about human intimacy is the need for kitchen closeness, whatever the kitchen is like, the simpler the better. We love it!
if he really believes this, he should just ignore the commercials and get on with his job…. personally, I’m glad the commercials are wrankling him and his buddies in Congress…
Graham CrackerAss should put on his pink shoulder holster, take Craig’s hand again, and
tip toe through the “two lips” he believes is IRAQ. With Blackwater as his guard he should be able to shop till he drops in Bag the Dad.
What a joke. Like this fucking piece of Republican shit deserves sympathy!? The Republicans are the ones that created this exact political/media milieu, and they exploited it gleefully over and over and over again to pound on Dems. Now that it’s coming back to bite them on the fucking ass, all I can do is cackle gleefully!
I have to live with this man as my Senator, woe is me. I can’t wait until he gets outed. I finally got his staffer, Walt Kuhn, on the phone this morning (only because I wouldn’t stop calling, he never responded to any of my voicemails). I could practically see him sneering. He thought I was an idiot as he explained it would be a simple vote, no filibuster, as if I had never heard of “cloture.” I ended up telling him I would do everything in my power to see Graham fail to be re-elected. He’s up next year.
dakine01 @ 47
Ha! That’s great!
At least that “party” had the guts to kick him out. Now if only the Dems would do it too.
leinie @ 213
It wouldn’t even have to be true. They would likely ALL be toast!
Can you imagine the blackmailing power that gives someone like Craig? He could threaten anyone who is in the closet and perhaps many who aren’t.
Awesome. The simple stupid fear of people is unbelievable sometimes.
Combine that fear with vicious people like the Bushies and you have a problem.
