Arianna has launched a new Mind, Body and Soul section at the Huffington Post and one of her first posters is Dr. Timothy Brantley, who successfully treated Howie Klein for cancer using holistic therapies. I got to meet and spend time with Dr. Brantley recently and he’s helping me now to detox from chemo and all I can say is, if you’re dealing with health issues run don’t walk to get his book The Cure: Heal Your Body, Save Your Life.
My very good friend Chef Howie (whose story is actually in Tim’s book) has been preparing whole foods for me for the past two weeks and I feel absolutely amazing. Coming off two surgeries and chemo this year that’s pretty remarkable.

Whole foods rock, and so does Jane!
So glad to hear it’s helping you!
At least a little good news today. Raw Foods!
Most excellent.
I saw this cross posted at Down With Tyranny earlier but I am swamped at work.I did manage to follow the links.
Good on ya Howie.
Thats a good friend.
Best news I have heard in a long time, ((((Jane))).
My diet sux, eating at truckstops and stuff.
Eureka Springs @ 9
Absolutely! And we needed some good news today. Glad to hear you’re feeling strong and well. {{Jane}}
Millineryman @ 5
Arrr! Me sentiments exactly!
Thing one: how nice to open a blog and see that Jane feels absolutely amazing!
Thing two: Having eaten mostly organic and vegan foods for the last month, I can report a tremendous improvement in the way I feel, physically and psychologically.
Thing three: For those who wonder, “Mitzvah” means literally “commandment (as in from the Almighty).” It is sometimes loosely used to mean a good dead.
Thing four: O/T and apologies if others have mentioned it. HuffPo reports that Dan Rather is suing CBS For 70 Million: Network Made Me “A Scapegoat…To Pacify The White House”
Health to both Howie and Jane and to all of us!
I have been by far too many bedsides of friends who have died of cancer.
Oilfieldguy @ 10
Tsk! ofg, take better care of yerself, we don’t want your excellent voice to get all hoarse from being run-down.
In this vein, my sister (whose husband is fighting liver/colon cancer) swears by One Bite at a Time, by Rebecca Katz – recipes for cancer survivors & friends. Lots of very tasty and healthy stuff…
Jane,
I’m a rock. Can piss on me, deprive me of water, kick me, ignore me, doesn’t matter, it’s my nature.
But have come to believe in (a) taking care of oneself, and (b) being skeptical of authority.
You lead. I’ll follow.
If you missed this article in the NYT Magazine Sunday it’s worth a read
Do We Really Know What Makes Us Healthy? Too much for me to summarize but the author points out that the level of cancer in Japanese women is significantly lower than that of American women but it only takes two generations for their rates to rise to the American level.
BigMitch @ 13
Mitzvah means a good Dead! Cool, Sugar Magnolia is my fav!

Some think we live and die with each breath.
Are there any good Vegetarian, whole foods, cook books out there? I am in the midst of a lifestyle change to get rid of the high blood pressure and extra weight, and my wife is vegetarian. We have a horrible time trying to find veggie cookbooks that have great recipes.
I fully support alternative methods of dealing with Cancer and especially cleansing ones body and soul after people go through traditional methods of dealing with cancer.
What I don’t like is when I hear people make comments about folks who are dealing or dying of cancer that somehow they must have not been able to integrate these methods and somehow failed by not healing…you know “blame the victim” comments
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 15
I won’t truly feel kewl until I make the blogroll of fdl and Digby.
This is the benefit of the internets, the giving voice to and the recognition of, the little guy.
It is why we hold the corporate media in such disdain, them and their cocktail weenie circuit.
Jane, I am so glad to hear you are doing well. I get very little info on you personally, because this blog, rightfully so, focuses elsewhere. Still, these hints are welcomed, because, as you know, it takes a village.
UTL at 21
buy organic foods (to avoid pesticides, etc.)
focus on complete proteins (e.g., rice and beans)
look for balance and great taste (e.g., organic salsa)
Jane, thank you. We know someone whose breast cancer reappeared after nine years. I’ve been puzzling over what to send. Maybe I need to get her a copy of this book.
If it’s helping you, I’m sure it’ll help her as well.
I’m thrilled to read that you’re feeling better.

Diet for a Small Planet is nice because it goes over the proper rice/bean combos for complete proteins.

Most of the Moosewood cookbooks are excellent. They’re compiled by the cooks and friends at the Moosewood restaraunt in Ithaca, New York. My favorite is Sundays at Moosewood. Foods from all over the world, translated into vegetarian and healthy.
ahhhh some good news from jane!! congrats miss jane..of course you know we’re in your corner ;o)…you must eat healthy and organically if possible….after all it cant hoit lol

BigMitch @ 13
That’s really great news about your health, BigMitch.
On the OT, when I met Rather earlier this year and I asked him about that whole event, he said something rather cryptic about their possibly being another chapter to come. Wonder if he was already getting his ducks in order.
Good for Dan.
UTLiberal @ 21
Moosewood cookbooks are great but also if you have a great vegetarian restaurant near you, normally they will give you ideas about different combinations. Rice and beans only go so far. Enjoy.
UTLiberal @ 21
Have you tried the cookbooks from the Moosewood collective? I’m not a vegetarian and I love many of the things from the classic “moosewood cookbook” and “low fat favorites.”

I am so happy for your good health and well being, Jane. So hard to achieve with any illness, much less cancer. Bless you.
Sorry, OT, but you need to see this:
“It’s a medium that basically allows everyone to become an instant pundit. Forget research or reasoned analysis or nuance. Forget job qualifications. Heck, forget the byline. In the blog game, it’s all about making the sort of witty snap judgments that will draw the most site traffic (read: ad revenue).”
“Speeding up the metabolic rate of news consumption, and giving it the glib gloss of the blogosphere, will do nothing to solve this essential crisis. If anything, it will diminish the intellectual patience and empathy upon which honest brokers of news depend.”
from Blogged to Death, an Oped in the Boston Globe today. From the examples cited, he clearly doesn’t hang out where we do.
Sadly, the Globe also ran a photo of the the young MediaWhore in Florida on the front page. This is Kerry Country, but that does it for my subscription.

If you have never heard of the Hippocrates Institute this is a great place to start when you are looking into changing your diet and doing it in a wise way. I had the pleasure of meeting Ann Wigmore during the early 70’s and she was a champ of alternative eating and lifestyle. You can attend Hippocrates for a reasonable price and you will learn a great deal about eating raw foods. They have been around for a very long time.

Ahoy, Matey!!
Wouldn’t eating traditional Japanese work?
Also, because I “live with the animals” so to speak, I have noticed tons of times over the years, the miracle of the body self-healing. Just think about it. You get cut, your body knows what to do. Your job is to protect from infection, and the cells know what their job is, and if you treat carefully without destroying new cells as they begin to fill in, you usually end up with no scar. Any application of corrosive cell-killing topicals hinder healing and create scarring. Another important think for healing is to keep the body hydrated and in homeostasis (sp). We need sunlight in order to metabolize vitamins. We need calcium for our bones and other minerals that make up our bodies that are made up of those materials. I fully support Dr. Brantley’s ideas and studies.
Kathleen @ 22
good point, and it reminds of something Miss Manners (who I greatly esteem) once said: that it is not right to talk about people “battling” “fighting” etc., against cancer and other life-threatening illnesses……because it is very, very far from a “fair fight” whose winning depends on the fighting skills of the victim.
BMitch some good conversation and insights about the Rather issue back at
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…../#comments
Odd that there was a review board set up by CBS to review Rathers part in the unsubstantiated report about the Presidents military service record. (or lack of service)
Why no review set up by the Washington Post to examine Bob Woodwards efforts to undermine the Libby/Plame investigation being conducted by Patrick Fitzgerald all the while Woodward had knew that he had been holding information.
If you review one Journalist why not the other? Woodwards actions (holding info while undermining an investigation) was far more serious than Rathers mistake. (trusting his producer)
Selective reviewing…

The Indian Vegetarian by Neelam Batra
Classic Indian Vegetarian Cooking by Julie Sahni
Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone by Deborah Madison. I haven’t cooked from this yet but my daughter has made many tasty meals from this book (she usually cooks from this when she invites me over for dinner). I have raved so over some of the recipes that she gave me a copy for my birthday.

Great news, Jane. Thanks for this information. [Maybe if our ruling elite were eating the way Howie does, coherent, effective thinking and public speaking in pursuit of a better nation and world, that echoes the themes of our Founders, would be practiced again by those in positions of power in our Legislative Branch of government.]
I’ve been subscribing to Ode Magazine for a few years and have read many amazing articles about the alternative treatments that are available in Europe. This link will take you to many thought provoking articles about those treatments. Ode was originally a Netherlands publication and now has an english version.

I have dealt with 7 friends passing to the other side with cancer during the last 11 years. One of my dearest friends she was 44 and one of the most beautiful, kind, compassionate and loving person on the planet. (three children left behind)
Elizabeth had been a vegetarian for years, had a beautiful attitude and a loving heart. When someone like this gets cancer and loses the battle (she went alternative because the medical world did not give her good odds) one wonders about the idea of justice in the universe.
Since then I have had six other dear friends pass. Elizabeth grew up in Steubenville Ohio during the 50’s (a steel town). She grew up thinking the air should taste like metal. The accumulative enviromental factors linked with cancer are not looked into enough.
That might mean the coal, steel, and other industries might be required to abide by EPA standards. No fucking excuses.
Anyway for those who beat the odds via alternative or traditional methods they are to be fully supported and celebrated. On the other hand for those who do not we should never ever blame them for not having the right attitude or some BS like that.
Kathleen @ 22, and oddmommy @ 43: I agree with you.
I kept a hard copy of the Miss Manners column on her objections to military metaphors in regard to illness. It was captioned “Dodging the Draft”, and was published in The Washington Post on Sunday, July 25, 1999. Can anyone find a link to it?
Here, in the meanwhile, is a link to a LiveJournal entry by linguist Suzette Haden Elgin. If you scroll down past the initial comments, you will see her essay on alternatives to violent metaphors for treating illness.

I’ve read every diet book around, and by far the one with the most science in it, and the one that makes the most sense and produces the best results (in my experience, in my opinon) is The Zone by Barry Sears. I think, though I am not sure there is a Vegetarian Zone book, and if so, it can be the answer to your prayers.
Jane Thank you! I am going to look into this. Need a cook though.
Jonathan @ 75
That is funny.
Roll call on the Webb amendment.
Glad you feel well. We all need to eat better.
BUT, the author claims to “reverse cancer” in 12 weeks. I hope we don’t fall victim to the anti-science movement in our country. The medical field has come a long way in the past 100 years. Science has helped us determine whether treatments are effective and safe. Many of these “cures” are not proven to be effective. They may be helpful as adjunctive remedies, but are no substitute for established medical practice. There is no place for magical thinking in the 21st century.
I’m sorry, I looked at this guy’s website and I think he’s a snake oil salesman. He sells an enzymatic “formula” that he claims clears “toxins” and “undigested food particles” (??!!) out of the bloodstream. Three bottles for $62.98, oh boy! Will someone explain to me how the hell you can have “undigested food particles” in your bloodstream? And we have a system for ridding our body of toxins: the liver and kidneys. All I see on his site are unproven claims and sales pitches.
Sure, eating healthy foods and getting pesticides out of the environment are important–but I’m not buying what this guy is selling.

FYI, new post
While I support a healthy lifestyle, I have been amazed by the people who make it into their 80’s and 90’s kicking and screaming putting up the good fight all the while eating crap, drinking and smoking.
As my Aunt Helen who lived until 87 and was a drinker and a smoker since the age of 20 (not a wise strategy) said to me after having numerous operations during the last several years of her life. “Kat if I had to do it over again I would carry a couple of fifths into the woods in the middle of the winter, drink them and fall asleep forever”.
I know people who have lived healthy lifestyles and they go early and others like Aunt Helen who abuse their bodies all of their lives and live until…..
I often think it is a roll of the dice. In the meantime I want to feel good while I am still kicking.
Fully support Jane and Howies choices

Lynn @ 81
Amen to that, Lynn. If I get cancer, god forbid, I’ll gladly make dietary changes and take supplements–but I’m also going to undergo chemo and radiation (and getta hella lotta medical opinions before I decide on my treatment regimen).
Lynn @ 80
No disrespect at all. I agree that science is constantly attacked and should be supported. Just a small point…we are now back to using leeches…they are helpful. Also, it was written in a major medical journal, perhaps Lancet, I don’t remember that natural honey is one of the best anti-infective agents in the treatment of tropical ulcers (google it).
It is not magical, it is realistic, to see that all elements used in medicine derive from “natural” elements….willow/asprin…foxglove/digitalis…elements that are the basis for heart treatment. The science is in finding the natural elements (that is all we have, since we live on earth) to aid in healing.
Jonathan @ 88
And, for heaven’s sake, if you are at war and in a helicopter, sit on your helmet!
LS @ 42
Japanese have high rates of cancer, not entirely explained by higher rates of smoking.
The problem is that things sold in grocery stores bear no relationship to what they are advertised as. Think of Tomatoes. They were one of God’s best creations. But they have been so inbred, for sturdiness, and in some cases genetically modified, that they are barely related to what used to be called tomatoes. There are thousands of examples, but in a nutshell, when your body craves a certain food, you may try to satisfy it, with something entirely different, and not know it.
Jane:
(I’m gonna get pounded for this) Examine everything and make the right choice for yourself.
But don’t fall for quacks with miracle cures.

Thanks, Jane, and best wishes.

sorry if this is about Gawler.
i know people who have raved about him and do not in any way wish to provoke any controversy.
my own healing has been through a combination of naturopathic methods, acupuncture and orthodox treatment.my condition had me at the stage of zombidom.after many doctors and many different diagnoses,my search yielded good results.
any one in position to require medical treatment needs access to all the information and i did seek information from people who had the same condition as i had.with good results.
i have offered the name of someone who has survived a cancerous position.
i leave it to the individual to judge whether that person has useful information.
i am not selling anything!
spork_incident @ 93
That has to be the first time I’ve ever heard radiation, major surgery and chemotherapy referred to as “quacks and miracle cures,” but I guess there’s a first time for everything.
Sorry to say this, but the man is a first-class charlatan. Whether or not a few people have been “helped” using his “cures” is of no concern to me. What he calls a “cure” is no more than wishful thinking, a modern form of faith healing.
He’s a quack, and a fraud. His only concern is to sell books; in that, he’s no different from other so-called “doctors”, like Deepak Chopra.
Anectodal evidence is no evidence at all. Period. It means, simply put, NOTHING.
So if you’ve been “cured” by this sheister, good for you, you’ve just discovered the power of a sugar pill. But don’t bet your life on it, and don’t waste your money.
I read all the “snake oil” books. Take them with a grain of salt, but most of them have at least one or two good ideas you can use.

1. We should assume that the old maxim, you are what you eat really does make sense. Food is fuel and if it’s sugar and toxins you aren’t going to go far, or fast or fair well.
2. Eating raw things makes sense–have you heard/read otherwise?
3. Cancer is an event in the body–triggers may be environmental or genetic or a combination thereof.
4. Cancer is a mutation and a mistake that isn’t fixed by the body (like when your cut heals via clotting). There are far too many factors involved to simplify it.
5. Placebos are powerful and effective. This means your mind is powerful and effective. There is no reason to downplay this factor–good if you are cured by the power of your mind.
6. Sadly, we cannot often be cured in a our bounded nutshells. We need community and belief.
7. Are antioxidants “quack” driven? If not, why not believe that much of what the alternative world tries to do is use natural compounds to affect things like this.
8. Cancer needs food too. It likes sugar, it likes iron and copper too believe it or not.
9. Exercise, eat raw whole foods, drink fresh juices. Eat beets!
10. The best books I’ve ever read on cancer and helping yourself in the face of it are:
a) Surviving “Terminal Cancer” by Ben Williams
b) Living Proof by Michael Gearin-Tosh
c) Cancer and Leukemia by Jan DeVries
b) Natural Compounds and Cancer Therapy by John Boik
These will be your road map.
LS @ 90

5. Placebos are powerful and effective. This means your mind is powerful and effective. There is no reason to downplay this factor–good if you are cured by the power of your mind.
Sugar pills for everyone!
Who would’ve guessed that placebos cure cancer?
.
spork_incident @ 106
As much as ‘touch therapy’ or any number of holictic (cough) applications, if the patient buys into it, and achieves a positive state of mind, that alone has been proven to be highly beneficial in many medical outcomes.
JAMA, NEJM or any other med journal has reported these things since the dark ages of the ’80’s.
To dismiss placebo effect across the board is just plain ignoring what science and fact have shown.
The phookin brain and mind are wierd things. Dismiss NOTHING that impacts them.
Drink red wine, eat small amounts of chocolate!
;-)
And yes, sorry to say, I think it HAS been proven that carcinogens from bbq coals, hard woods, and such . . .to cook red meats ARE most harmful to women’s systems.
So google that up, ladies, and you’d might like to avoid the things that many of us guys love so dearly to make for our female loved one’s and friends . . .
Sigh . . . smoked meats, open fire grilled meats, all bad for us . . . . damn those carcinogens . . .
Good health to Mz. Hamsher, and to all.
larue @ 107
I don’t disagree with any of this.
However, Douglas provided a litany of nonsense. He might as well have been selling peach pits.
My best to Jane.
.
There are too many things to say in this limited space regarding why we believe what we do on this matter. Pharmaceuticals can be powerful, helpful and useful and can just as easily be the reverse of these.
Much of what we “discover” in medical science is often the product of studying “natural” cures; isn’t Taxol derived from the Pacific Yew Tree?
The Merck Manual used to list Coffee Enemas as a treatment. This form of enema is still used in several “detox” regimens; the goal of this is not to cleanse your colon and intestines but rather to stimulate the liver. Recall how often caffeine is now in the medical news as beneficial in protecting the liver.
Clearly placebos do not cure cancer, but the placebo effect should not be dismissed.
Medicine has tried for decades to understand and use the immune system–interleukins were “discovered” long ago and yet, to date, they have done nothing of statistical significance to help cancer patients.
However, their use has been funded by the NIH constantly. Funding, the means of how one is able to pursue ideas in research, is a limiting master that keeps us on one road regardless of its efficacy. Fallible people with motivations that are often personal fund research. And often they are simply funding the wrong things. People must write grants that follow certain funding trends and then do research in that trend. There is little freedom to “get lucky” in this style of science.
I’m not sure what was nonsense; happy to discuss any point.
spork_incident @ 109
Jane, I don’t care if it is voodoo, you do what you need to beat this disease.
You have inspired me in a big way, and I want nothing but the best for you. I’m guessing you’re not asking for much at this point.
God bless you, but mostly We bless you. You’re one of my few heroes.
It is one of my life’s simple goals to shake your hand, as I got to do with Christy, and thank you for all the great work you have done.
Everyone out here is just a kick-ass human being, and it is both humbling and fantastic.
Every ounce of my soul wishes all of you the best.
Thanks again. You all give me hope.
Let me please add that there is WAY more about how the brain and body work together that we don’t know than there is that we do.
Only a moron doesn’t understand this simple concept.
Repeating now: I don’t give a flying fuck about how you do it, Jane, just do it, as the commercial says.
Holistic treatment for cancer? I thought only Republicans were anti-science.
Heraldblog:
Just because we don’t know what the “science” is doesn’t mean there isn’t science present.
It is folly to assume we have reached any kind of pinnacle of scientific ideal.
All one needs to do is look backwards at science, when the world was once flat, when Earth was the Center of the Universe, when heavy things fell more quickly than lighter things. The list is endless.
Book suggestion: Powers of Mind, by Adam Smith.
Jane, you are kick-ass blogger. When your name is on it, I read it.
this is a very good thing, Jane
Delighted to hear that you are doing well, Jane.
When i had breast cancer at age 46, I found “Getting Well
Again” by Carl Simonton, very helpful; from it , i learned how to meditate , using creative visualization to heal.
And whole foods and smoothies: yum, they really do work.
Good luck in your continuing journey.
Forgot to say, that was third stage breast cancer back in 1990;
i had a mastectomy and chemotherapy;
and now i have been healthy and happy for years since because
i changed my lifestyle and meditate. and who knows how the brain and body really work together to create new health? all i know is that changing works.
I don’t know how you come off surgery and chemo and look so damn good.
You can’t go wrong with any cookbook by Deborah Madison–she’s amazing.
UTLiberal @ 21
My husband, a current lymphoma patient undergoing chemotherapy, lived the life style the doctor advocated before he was diagnosed with cancer. He had no symptoms at all until lumps started to appear (swollen lymph nodes) and he had one biopsied. The blood tests, cat scans, etc all came back negative for ANYTHING yet he is a stage 3 follicular patient with an 80% chance for recover but 0% chance for cure. No one in his family has ever had cancer.
It isn’t all diet, exercise, and mediation. Sometimes you come into contact with chemicals used in your work or living space and they mess you up.
My husband was an airline pilot, former marine fighter pilot, and a farmer. He used agent orange, malathion, and was exposed to all sorts of junk most people are not even aware exist in the environment. Keeping clear of that which you cannot see is not easy. No amount of dieting, exercise, or good living would have prevented my husband from getting cancer. He got it from environmental sources and in this particular time of the world you cannot avoid it.
