I like it when a candidate talks in the abstract about their ideals, but then they have to show their work, they have to back it up with specifics which proves they are all in.

That line, from Giuliani in 1993, can easily be twisted into a negative ad today.

Don’t understand why a southern accent is funny but a New York accent isn’t. People from Wisconsin have an accent and lord know Boston does, so why is the south funny?

Someone from Boston knows the difference between a Boston Brahmin accent and working class accent (think of the Family Guy episode with “chowda”). One of them is funny. Same in NY. If you’re from the Bronx, a NJ accent is funny. And vice versa.

So, to a northerner, any southern accent is funny. But beyond that, think about, oh, why is it that Boss Hogg had the strongest accent in the show? Accents are easy to make fun of, and southern accents have been associated with all the worst parts of the south (and not just by northerners).

[shrugs] What the fuck can I say? DINO. To some degree it’s significantly true.

It’s really sad. I miss a functioning government.

I dunno, I had a southern accent but moved to Michigan for school. Since, I’ve always associated a southern accent with social conservatives even tho I know those with a southern accent represent greater diversity than what the social conservatives represent.

I’m not sure what you mean by your question. But, if you mean why is it subject of mockery or humor, I think part of it is that it’s much easier to give a rude imitation of a generic Southern accent than is true for other accents. The Southern accent is probably seen as “all the same”, where ever. (Though that’s actually not true in my experience.) Pretty easy to give a generic imitation of Valley Girl speak, too! ;)
