Here’s the Sunday Talking Head line-up. I need more coffee… (Partially via ContraCosta Times.)
“C-Span’s Washington Journal”: 7:45am – Matt Bai, New York Times Magazine, Contributing Editor; 8:30am – Newspaper Articles & Viewer Calls; 9am – Olga Oliker, RAND Corporation, Senior International Policy Analyst; 9:30am – Lisa Curtis, Heritage Foundation, Asian Studies Senior Fellow.
“Meet the Press” (NBC): Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and John McCain, R-Ariz.
“This Week” (ABC): Defense Secretary Robert Gates; Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I.
“Face the Nation” (CBS): Sens. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., and Carl Levin, D-Mich.
“CNN Late Edition”: Retired Gen. Wesley Clark; Sens. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.; Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo.
“Fox News Sunday”: Defense Secretary Robert Gates; Gen. David Petraeus; Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del.
It’s a whole lotta Iraq and bloviating, and not much else, frankly. But there could be some interesting sparks on CNN’s Late Edition if Rep. Tom Lantos gets asked about why Rush Limbaugh is an ill-informed, bloviating moron. (Here’s hoping Blitzer gives him the chance…but I’m not exactly holding my breath.)
Today’s photo comes from reader Hilde with an e. She sent this one along of a lovely hovering ruby throated hummingbird, taking a morning sip of some nectar from a local flowering shrub. And she sent two lovely companion pictures as well — I’ve added them below. Love the shot from the back — you can see the graceful arch in the back as the hummingbird swoops in for a sip. Beautiful moment caught there. Enjoy!
We are taking The Peanut to the zoo today. So everyone be good. The mods are keeping an eye on things for me this morning — and we have some surprises in store later for everyone. Have a great day, and leave me some notes on what I ought to watch from our Tivo of the Sunday shows, if anything, in the comments.
PS — Don’t miss this from Audrey yesterday. Next time you think that one person can’t make a difference, I want you to think about these two boys and their little idea. And how far the next little idea could take all of us… From the Chronicle Herald:
Two students at Central Kings Rural High School fought back against bullying recently, unleashing a sea of pink after a new student was harassed and threatened when he showed up wearing a pink shirt.
The Grade 9 student arrived for the first day of school last Wednesday and was set upon by a group of six to 10 older students who mocked him, called him a homosexual for wearing pink and threatened to beat him up.
The next day, Grade 12 students David Shepherd and Travis Price decided something had to be done about bullying.
“It’s my last year. I’ve stood around too long and I wanted to do something,” said David.
They used the Internet to encourage people to wear pink and bought 75 pink tank tops for male students to wear. They handed out the shirts in the lobby before class last Friday — even the bullied student had one.
“I made sure there was a shirt for him,” David said….
Good on those kids. Really great character and leadership. And what a great way to start the day, eh?

From epu land – egregious….what new job? I’ve had allergies so bad that the computer screen is often too bright to look at, so I’ve obviously missed a lot. And congrats, regardless of what it is!
YES! A pair of zeds this weekend one on Pull Up a Chair and now the Sunday Talking Heads thread.
A very Good Morning Christy and to everyone!
Good morning, everyone!
Good morning Christy!
NZ expat, the only new work is being a late nite poster, last Saturday and again last night. It’s a blast. Always like to learn new skillz.
egregious @ 5
You’re a very gracious hostess, and well suited for the gig.
I just read about the Arctic ice retreating. Now, in all my summers in the Arctic (8), I always reveled in it being a pollen free zone (oh yes, the allergies are really getting out of control for me in Kansas). I have fears that it will be Antarctica alone with pollen, if this keeps up.
Good morning, all.
From EPU land:
Broder swings for the bleachers.
egregious @ 5
and I missed both of your parties!
Thanks Millineryman! And Elliott, perhaps there will be another party. You’re all invited.
Seems like C-span is adopting some bad MSM habits. One “objective” journalist, Matt Bai – yeh right), followed by two hyper partisans from pro-war, anti-Constitution Rand and Heritage.
You can do better, Brian Lamb.
I’m very excited this am, I’m going to attend Rev Deb’s 11 am service and spend the afternoon with her at her towns restaurant festival.
She’s about 45 minutes from me in the lovely town of West Chester PA.
Hey, give RevDeb a big hug from us pups!
Jim R @ 11
He likes to put on a token “Real” journalist to whet the chops of the RW folks who are really out there ready to call in on weekends. They will be all stoked up for the next two guests, check it out. Listen to the tenor of the calls, now!
Weekends are always fun on the WJ, as are Fridays when Brian hosts, many of regular viewers refer to them as “Fascist Fridays”.
Nice pictures!
Today, I will watch nothing on the morning shows, though I will be very interested in watching Alan Keyes in the debate tomorrow night.
Did I say “interested in?” I meant “extremely entertained by”

Howdy, egregious, Christy, RevDeb, FirePups!
Long week here. Phew. The week that wouldn’t die…how the heck are the rest of you?
Millineryman @ 12
Wow! That’s exciting. Have fun!
would love to hear about later if you care to share.
Millineryman, I need to send you an email with followup…state house finally finished signage for our candidate, based on your work.
Rayne @ 16
How are you?
miss your comments Rayne. I guess you’ve been pretty busy with the job, eh? ;)
Elliott — from last Saturday morning to end of the night last night, I put in 85 hours.
On my part-time job.
Pfew…
Rayne @ 20
It’s a good thing that you aren’t working full-time!
I might as well start the argument this morning. Frank Rich weighs in on the MoveOn ad. As usual, he nails it:
I stopped supporting MoveOn a few years ago when they refused to cease using Richard Clark’s image in their ads when he specifically asked them to stop.
The Petraeus ad looked like it was the product of an angry 7th grader.
Rayne @ 20
If that was your part-time job, what hours does your day-time job take?
FYI, the dollar reached all-time low against the Euro this week, $.01 off $1.40/euro, simultaneous to oil’s high/barrel (coincidence?)
To continue late nite’s theme of being thankful for what *didn’t* happen, let’s be glad the talk shows aren’t full of “Why Iran Is Evil And Must Be Bombed.”
They tip their hand about the propaganda focus. Let’s make that work for us.
egregious_Will do.
Elliott_I’ll follow up with you later
Rayne_Great to hear form you! You must be exhausted and thanks for sharing the info about the signs.
Why not have these insane talking head shows feature on every single episode: Fred Smith, Sane person, representing the sane people of planet earth.
So you would have all these politicians and Ph.D.s facing a real person, a sane person, a humble person. And the humble person would say things like:
Isn’t humanity really just one family?
Isn’t war obsolete as a means to deal with problems?
Cooperation and Tolerance are the signs of sane people and the only means for true peace, what about that?
Honestly, aren’t we one human species with terrible global problems, isn’t it time we all wake up to our common WE-ness and get on with human civilization????
Isn’t murdering 1 million Iraqis a war crime and something impeachable?
Isn’t murder a dark evil upon the planet, and where is our moral leadership as a nation?
And so, instead of this abstraction from people who pretend to know, you get a sane person out there every week to really listen to, and really bring the deluded ego-driven ones down to reality, into the space where human sanity and reality has a voice on the world stage of madness?
Therefore, SANE PEOPLE must become the face and voice for a new politics of forget the past and build a global civilization.
There is NO GLOBAL CIVILIZATION because the robotic politicians are not representing the human beings, only the interests of money.
We need a sane person’s talk show every Sunday, where simple humble sane people from all over the planet gather to speak the issues of the day and give the right sane whole integratic vision of how humanity gathers, ONE SPECIES, and transforms the planet, not just American power-politics.
Sane Person @ 26
Next you’ll be having the meek inheriting the earth, or some-such. ;-)
egregious @ 24
every day we don’t bomb iran is a day with at least one thing to celebrate.
and now for something totally different (i.e. – OT):
Notre Dame is 0-3, while Indiana University, perennial football punching-bag (or is that tackling dummy?) is 3-0.
Any Biblical scholars out there who can tell me w/n this is one of the Signs of The Apocalypse?
jayt, if you’re a Notre Dame fan, you have my deepest sympathies.
I recommend watching Chris Wallace’s interview with Robert Gates at the beginning of Fox News Sunday.
He gives the White House line on why the Webb Amendment is Baad, so baad. And the president should veto it.
He said the military would have to cobble together forces like from the Guard and Reserves. and so forth (sorry only can hold so much in short term memory)
He was asked if Israel bombed Syria and Gates refused to answer
“We don’t talk about other countries military actions” (rough quote) which shouted YES THEY DID to me.
Elliott @ 30
jayt, if you’re a Notre Dame fan, you have my deepest sympathies.
Nope – other way round… *eg* (evil grin)
just wanted to be sure that I’m not celebrating my own personal prelude to being Left Behind…
‘Course, everything takes about 5 years longer to make it to Indiana than it does to the civilized world, so I figure I’m good for quite a while yet either way…
Elliott: Evil Fox???
You mean the channel with all the American flags and “LIVE” Banners all over the screen???
Did you know “LIVE” backwards is “EVIL”?
Good morning all.
lina @ 22
So, what object lesson are we to draw from the distraction facilitated by this choice of headline?
* The wingnuts and their MSM allies will use any red herring they can find to pull attention away from the substance of an issue.
* Any plausible occasion for faux indignation is such a red herring.
* Every MSM writer would rather be a critic than a logician. It’s dreary stuff analyzing the soundness of an argument and checking the validity of the claims. So they divert from the substance at hand to the questions of “How did he/she come across” and “How will be people react?” That way there’s no need to check facts and then risk saying someone is full of shit.
* Since the wingnuts and the MSM can almost always find a red herring of some sort, progressives have to become adept at dealing with them. One of the best examples I’ve seen was way that Kos handle Tweety when he asked about the MoveOn ad. The following quote in from my inexact memory: “That ad may be a big deal out east, but sitting here in California I can’t believe we are talking about an ad when were in a war that has killed more than 3500 Americans and …” With a smile on his face, no anger, and no blame, he brought the discussion right back on topic, and even Tweety marveled at deftness with which he did it.
WASHINGTON – A Republican lawyer who says Karl Rove may have been involved in the prosecution of former Democratic Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman emerged without comment Friday from four hours of questioning at the House Judiciary Committee.
“We answered their questions,” Simpson‘s attorney Priscilla Duncan told reporters after the deposition, declining to elaborate.
Siegelman was convicted along with former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy in a high-profile government corruption case. In the key charge, Siegelman was accused of appointing Scrushy to an influential hospital regulatory board in exchange for Scrushy arranging $500,000 in contributions to Siegelman‘s campaign for a state lottery.

Ask Charlie Weiss. It’s gotta be Apocalyptic for him.
Elliott @ 31
I am encouraged to hear they feel the need to oppose Webb’s amendment. That means they are afraid it might succeed. Woohoo!
Democrats: more leadership like this please. And like vet Ron Shepston in yesterday’s BlueAm, we raised nearly $1400 for him. That thread’s still open for comments and contributions, for pups who want to see what it looks like when a real Democrat steps up.
“It’s a whole lotta Iraq and bloviating, and not much else”
Tepid is the word I’d use to describe most of the Dems above. Why no Howard Dean, Russ Feingold, even Ted K? Why no CHS or Jane? Nothing but blah blah blah.
Oh what a beauriful mornin’… oh what a beautiful day. Here in SW Oklahoma. I’m in the lounge chair, beside the pool with a laptop (I hate these things) looking due south to Texas about 30 miles. All by myself. Gawd, I suppose I better look at the news.
It looks to me like the only thing the Democrats can do to change things in Iraq is impeach the President and VP. As this seems increasingly unlikely, it looks like nothing at all is going to happen for the next year. The Democrats will not be able to push any law through the veto of Bush and Bush has lost interest in pretty much everything. Cheney seems to have vanished, but he does that once in a while.
What’s going to happen in a few weeks when the economy totally collapses? More of the same. Bush might even try to declare that more tax cuts are the answer, while at the same time bailing out the hedge funds. But the Democrats aren’t going to be able to get any tax increases through and no one will be able to cut spending in a significant way. Meanwhile the national debt and per capita debt keeps rising. There is nobody steering the ship.
A “real Democrat”. One almost has to go to a museum to see one. ;0)
* Since the wingnuts and the MSM can almost always find a red herring of some sort, progressives have to become adept at dealing with them.
And if a progressive organization (that regularly solicits funds from their supporters) is going to spend $70K on one ad, they might consult someone who knows something about advertising before they pull the trigger.
re: the approaching apocalpyse,
how about the shameless McCain to takeover as coach of the 0 – 3 Irish?, he has the built in Gipper speech, “boys, it looked bleak when I was held captive, our backs were against the wall, etc. etc.” – he could still do his regular Sunday gig with L’il Russ and coach of the Irish is like being President which he will never attain but this could be his quid pro quo for sucking up to the Bushies even after they mauled his family
i think fall has arrived in MA… it’s a beautiful day, but the high is only expected to be 61 and it was in the 40s last night.
my big question for the morning is… do i leave the windows open or do i turn on the heat? i love the fresh air but don’t like the chill.
Good morning, everyone. Those pics are terrific!
I’ve been cooped up for days, working nonstop to put together an upcoming concert. I’ve been sitting at the table with my laptop, music and books virtually nonstop. I’ve done lots of musical and historical research, and have almost completed a musical arrangement of one of our pieces. I’ve decided to get out and enjoy what looks like a beautiful day outside. A friend of mine is an amazing glass artist, and he’s participating in a show (outside) with a couple hundred other artists of various mediums. They’re doing a silent auction to raise money for a non-profit organization that helps people in crisis (victims of homelessness, violence, etcetera). Our area is going through a huge crunch with foreclosures, and I’m sure Common Ground Sanctuary can use all the support they can get. If you’re in the Detroit area, check out the Art in the Park event.
So, after I finish this coffee, I’ll be off to enjoy the art, the outdoors, and the company of friends for the day.
Jim R @ 11
Not only that, but it seemed to me that they heavily weighted taking calls from the Republican line. They’d do one Repug, then one Ind., then one Repug., then one Dem, then one Repug, then another repug., then an Ind, then a repug., then a Dem. I was really not pleased.
GeorgeSimian @ 40
do you really think that’s going to happen?
jim oconnor @ 38
I have been wondering where Howard Dean is. I have been surprised how he’s been so darn quiet. I would think that, as the “leader” of the party, he’d be out doing a lot more media. I’m surprised that he’s decided to sit back and stay out of the media, working behind the scenes. When he has spoken out on the state of America and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he’s done a terrific job. What is behind his strategy to stay mum? I’m hearing more from Rahm Emanuel than Howard Dean, and that’s just not good.
Greenspan admits Iraq was about oil, as deaths put at 1.2m
The man once regarded as the world’s most powerful banker has bluntly declared that the Iraq war was ‘largely’ about oil.
Appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1987 and retired last year after serving four presidents, Alan Greenspan has been the leading Republican economist for a generation and his utterings instantly moved world markets.
Greenspan. Wadda guy. My hero. Fuck you Alan.

It looks like the WaPo found space on Page 8 for the demonstration. My favorite quote is from Galaxy Quest:
“We’re not going to let the domestic enemy here at home defeat us like they did then,” she said. “No retreat, no surrender. Not now, not ever.”
selise @ 43
We opened the windows for about 15 minutes to get the nice fresh air in the house. Closed the windows, and the sun is streaming in to warm up the place (cats are digging it, too). I turned on the heat, and it just came on after about an hour of closed windows.
To be a cat… my 19 pounder is lounging in what is his favorite situation: he’s laying on the rug, is partially under a chair, the sun is streaming in the picture window on him, and his face is a few inches from the heating duct. That’s his version of heaven, I’m sure.
Alan Greenspan and Colin Powell. Two of the most unprincipled men in the world. These slime balls are truly ‘men for the ages’. Perfect examples of how not to act in government service.
lina @ 42
lina, with all due respect, if the ad had been a standard, bland, “we’re against the war” type ad, do you believe it would have gotten near the play that this one has gotten.
In my eyes, it has done exactly what is necessary – it has people talking about it. And the more the Rs repeat the ad, the more it reinforces the Betray-us meme such that it becomes the first thought folks have when they think of this general. And it goes then a long way to counteract his cheerleading. Which means it has served its purpose.
The Rs know this and that’s what upsets them so much. Am I happy that MoveOn is copying wing-nut methods? Not particularly. But Dems and the liberals/progressives have been using BB guns for years while the VRWC has been using Howitzers. I like evening the odds a bit towards my side.
landofthefree @ 51 -
yeah, i don’t think my cats are very happy this morning. i left the windows open last night and it’s not warm this morning *g*. i love to hear the birds and the breeze (i live at the top of a hill)… but my fingers are starting to turn blue as i type, so i think it’s time to turn on the furnace. :(
The sweet smell of ‘progress’ and burning flesh.

Dozens of people have been killed in three separate suicide bomb attacks in Iraq.

p.s. agree with your analysis otherwise.

Brian Lamb and CSpan have never been particularly liberal in their orientation so why are folks surprised. CSpan is a business with a unique business plan. It is not a traditional media/journalistic endeavor outlet. We can complain and get a few changes around the edges but that’s about it.

more Fox News this Sunday
The horror of the week was the Move-On ad. Nina Easton essentially blamed move-on ads for Dems losing votes in the election, particularly in Ohio.
Bill Kristol (and it’s over at the Weekly Standard — sorry won’t linky) says White House will announce Michael Mukasey as the Attorney General nominee prolly tomorrow.
Kristol’s happy because he thinks Mukasey will help the White House fight Congress on FISA.
And Juan Williams actually got a word in edgewise on the Betray-Us ad discussion which was – as I said – the horror of the week.
I’m posting a banal and rather inane comment.
wigwam @ 61
IIRC, when Dean became Chair of the DNC, he stated that he would not be out front all the time but would be working behind the scenes to build the 50 state party.
Good morning, all! It’s a nice chilly morning here, too, but will warm up, I’m sure. I’m getting some mocha started and will be staining the deck at home. I’ll sure be happy when this round of home maintenence is done o.O
Selise @ 47: I think its only a matter of when, not if. Almost all the economic conditions and indicators mirror that of the late 20’s…
Good morning from L.A.
Gen. Petraeus only on Fox again? Has he appeared anywhere else to talk up the surge? Oh right, he & Crocker were pitched softballs by Jim Lehrer on the PBS NewsHour. Which indicates something about the NewsHour’s new idea of objectivity/neutrality under PBS’ new “leadership”…
Oh late, lamented MacNeil/Lehrer days of the NewsHour, when I actually looked forward to watching it after work.
The march to more war continues.
Report: Syria had planned ‘devastating surprise’ for Israel
The paper quoted Israeli sources as saying that planning for the strike began shortly after Meir Dagan, chief of the Mossad intelligence agency, presented Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in late spring with evidence that Syria was seeking to buy a nuclear device from North Korea.

‘Pentagon listed 2,000 Iranian targets’
By JPOST.COM STAFF
Officials say US plans to provoke Teheran to justify attack; claim Rice ready to submit to Cheney.
US President George W. Bush and his associates are seriously considering declaring war on Iran and have listed specific facilities that would be targeted in such an event, while Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has slowly given up the idea of finding a diplomatic solution to the country’s persistence in enriching uranium, a British report said on Sunday morning.

Has anyone considered that the negative response to the MoveOn ad is the reason that Pelosi took impeachment off the table?
We’ve created an environment where taking a big, controversial stand is discouranged.
lina @ 22
As usual Rich nails it? Frankly, that’s Rich!
As for your not supporting MoveOn, I will start contributing to them and perhaps make up for it.
Don’t become part of the right wing echo machine, lina.
peanutbutter @ 64
i have been worried too, but i was wondering why you thought the worst was going to happen soon. did you read ian’s post and discussion yesterday? i am now looking forward to his next week’s post on the bush years and our current situation.
GeorgeSimian @ 40
IIRC, it takes only 40 senators to filibuster against any further funds for continuing this war of aggression (a crime against humanity). Congressmen should be warned ahead of time what a vote to fund continuation of that war might do to their legal status in terms of international law, especially given the doctrine of universal juridiction that several nations subscribe to.
Elliott @ 71
So rare to find anyone who delivers on promises these days. We should frame this one.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 67
Why would Syria nuke Israel, isn’t there something about radiation being a bad thing, and isn’t Syria right next door?
TJ @ 72
i don’t think we’ve created that environment. i think the right wing has – and to do just what you say, to discourage anyone from taking a stand against what they are doing.
time to break free of right-wing created constraints that prevent us from doing what is needed.
selise @ 47
I’m a glass half-empty kind of person, but it’s all over the British papers. They’re having a run on one of their banks because the bank went to the Bank of England for a bailout. Everyone’s lining up to get their money out.
It’s not hard to foresee some major problems in the US too. Everyone in the last seven years put their money into real estate because they were scared of the stock market. Now the real estate market is crashing, creditors are calling in their loans and debt is off the map. Oil prices are soaring, the war is unending and draining. And Bush is doing nothing. It’s not pretty.
allan_in_upstate @ 8
And strikes out.
What a stupid, stupid old fart this assclown is.
Elliott @ 78
Of course.
wigwam @ 76
Yeah, they might be subjected to torture. Is that what you mean?
lina @ 22
Leave General Petraeus Alone! He’s got medals on chest. He’s done things. All you Democrats just want to bring the troops home. He just did what we told him to do.
I think any war/genocide critics should be required to get approval from Frank Rich. This is especially true when the our criticism actually becomes relevant and effective. We must never, never protest in such a way that David Brooder and Kookie Roberts are offended.
MoveOn.org is just another fem, angry, hippie blog that has no respect for an incompetent, boot licking, disgrace of a general. Let General Betray-us do his job of mass murder, in the name of OIL.
selise @ 79
Thankfully, MoveOn has considerably more moral fiber than Miss Nancy. They’ve released another ad attacking Bush’s lie about the ‘drawdown’. This is what progressives must do.
Go on the attack and stay there until Impeachment is back on the table.
Elliott @ 62
Blamed for losing votes in Ohio in which election? The coming one? Their ads were very helpful in the last election, I thought.
dakine01 @ 54
Usually free media that results from an ad is a good thing. In this case, the wingnuts got to lump everyone who is against the US quagmire in Iraq into the same bucket with MoveOn, thereby reinforcing their position. The unnecessary sophomoric verbage of the ad detracted from its important message and got Democrats arguing with each other. Not 70 grand well spent.
dakine01 @ 63
I’m not at all surprised that Howard Dean has not been so out front during the primary season. As head of the DNC, he must be impartial, and has said that repeatedly. He cannot take sides or endorse a candidate or a candidate’s position. So he watches his words and continues to work on his 50 state initiative.
Frank33 @ 84
Well we do have an angry five year old for President. Don’t we? Rich, Broder and all the rest of the corporatists press can kiss my ass. They’ve been flat out, ridiculously wrong about everything they’ve ever written about.
I don’t care what they have to say.
About anything.
Margot @ 86
at the time I thought she was referring to the 2004 election but now I can’t say for certain, either 2004 or 2006. The need to say they were extra effective in Ohio struck me as odd (unless Move-on really targeted the ads to Ohio) sorry I can’t be more definitive on which election.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 67
IIRC, the Israeli attack on Syria occurred on August 30, the same day that a B52 with six nuke-armed Advanced Cruise Missles was in the air for several hours over the U.S. Coincidence? Tinfoil?
Goopers still tryin to make political hay out of the Move On ad…
The Move On ad didn’t stop the war- and goopers ain’t gonna get an ounce of lasting political satisfaction from attacking it…
Goopers use things like the Move On ad to reassure the base..
“Yeah- I know I voted for the immigration ad- but I really hate the Move On Ad..”
It all amounts to nothing- nothing at all.
wigwam @ 91
Coincidence? It’s doubtful.
dakine01 @ 69
I don’t recall ever seeing her or ever hearing anything about her. I was reading a alumni type page (Star-Telegram)about him right before the 2004 election named “Bush, Kerry showed their strengths in school” and it never mentions one word about Kerry. But his sister was mentioned.
I was looking at the similarities between him and Boss Tweed and came across this:
Andover classmates nicknamed him “Lip” for his wisecracking ways at the then all-boys Massachusetts boarding school. He dubbed himself “Tweeds Bush” — after the infamous Boss Tweed of New York’s Tammany Hall–snip
Boss Tweed’s followers generally worked by presenting excessive bills for work performed. Ostensibly the bills were paid in full, but in reality only part of the amount was paid, with Tweed retaining the remainder and dividing it between his followers in proportion to their importance. For example, the city was billed $13,000,000 to build a courthouse, which was many times the actual cost of construction, estimated to be $250,000; the city was also billed $3,000,000 for city printing and stationery over a two-year period.
Boss Tweed indeed! Tweed was also a brush man–Tweed started out in his daddy’s brush company.
“CNN Late Edition”: Retired Gen. Wesley Clark; Sens. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.; Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo.
bold = nap time for me.
So Syria was going to buy one nuke and attack Israel who would respond with 300 nukes.

Something this nation is badly in need of.

the debate between Kerry & McCain on MTP is actually interesting.

I can understand not wanting to spend money on an ad agency for professional advice. But there are probably any number of progressive-leaning ad agency executives willing to donate some time to help groups like MoveOn. If they’re going to spend big bucks on ads, they could seriously use some help.
How can someone attack a General?- it might hurt his feelings.
Anyone notice that Larry Johnson’s “No Quarter” is showing a CPU overload?
What was he posting this AM? Is the traffic so high, they shut him down?
And was it by accident or design he got overloaded?
Just love these tin-foil hat trips, but like my previous thread post about AF vs. Army, they are food for thought, not statements of my personal beliefs…
However, any time I see one of the more vigilant and legitimate bloggers shut down, if even because of too much traffic, I consider both the best and worst-case scenarios…
If I ever get on FDL in the midst of a national crisis, and there’s an “error screen” popping up instead of Jane, TRex, CHS or et al, I will seriously consider heading for the hills with a pup tent and my favorite little survival book “edible wild plants of North America.”
Like I have said before, when a Republican tells me I’m paranoid, I thank them for the compliment.

The ad could have been done by the highest priced Madison Avenue Advertising Company- it still wasn’t going to move the needle..
They went for attention- (probably the only way they could even be noticed with their ad budget). Had they said used a more conventional approach- no one would EVER have noticed that damned thing.
The approach was- “Just because this fucker is a general doesn’t mean that he’s right or honest”..
Not bad as far as it goes I guess.
It was NEVER going to tip the scales on the war.
lina @ 99
Frankly, I’d rather see something plain and plain spoken than a glitzy corporate ad. It’s MoveOn’s right to spend its money as it chooses. The problem is that aren’t defending the right of any group to have its say.
The media LOVES flaps like the Move On ad. Their favorite game is “Let’s you and him fight”. Lots of easy stories to write- for weeks.
rwcole @ 102
Now that’s a headline I would gladly support.
“General- Move On called you “Betrayus”- what have you got to say about THAT? Gonna let em get away with that? What are ya- a big PUSSY? Come on- give us a juicy quote”
Journalism School
The best statement I’ve seen so far on the MoveOn ad comes from George Lakoff, at Huffpo.
Howard Kurtz raised the issue, and a Fox Gnus guy said the usual stuff, but Arianna Huffington was ready and gave a Lakoff-style response. Kurtz added the last word with a cheap shot — what a putz.
This Moveon thing is bogus like all GOP criticism. Remember when Bush raised the allowable levels of mercury and arsenic in our water supplies (The Clean Water Act) someone ran an ad with children drinking water saying that Bush wanted to poison our children. The Repugs were outraged and said it was “grossly unfair”. It was true, but that was besides the point, I guess.
lina @ 100
Millions of taxpayer dollars have been spent on advertising to persuade taxpayers to support this awful war. Is there such a thing as a “progressive-leaning ad agency”? Don’t ad agencies get money from corporations to sell us things we do not need. Get out of the way if you do not want to help.

There’s a lot of usable momentum in those attacks against MoveOn. They have put that ad in the spotlight. What’s now required is a bit of verbal judo to move the spotlight from the ad itself to the substance of the ad. I watched Kos do that ever so deftly on Hardball. It was beautiful to watch, and to watch Tweety’s reaction as he too marveled at how slickly Kos handled it. (The last bullet in #34 gives my rough recollection of how Kos did it.)
My bestest friend tells me she feels a sense of urgency in the realm of politics. I am at once, all ears.

Nail. Hammer. Bang.
You’ve found another of the five year olds…
Someone needs to find a video clip of Allen saying “kick their soft teeth down their whiney throats” so we can show it every time “they” claim Move On is some kind of a virtual bully.
And doesn’t anyone on the right realize it was posed not as a comment or accusation, but as a question?
Maybe that is splitting semnatic hairs, I don’t think so. There’s a question mark at the end of that headline, and that should be regarded much more than it has been.
If Move On had intended to call Petraeus a betrayer, they would have replaced the the “or” with “the” and the question mark with an exclamation point.
It wasn’t an accusation, it was a query, meant to stimulate intelligent thought among the wingers. And to tweak Petreaus’ conscience, hoping for one of those miracle moments of personal clarity.
What may have been the only real mistake Move On made was assuming there are ANY intelligent thinkers left on the right.

But saying Bush wanted to do it–them’s fighting words!

Everyone agrees that at least one IDF fighter flew into Syrian airspace dropped something ordinance and/or fuel tanks and left. I’ve heard “navigation error,” “rogue attack by a pissed-off IDF pilot,” “probing the Syrian air defenses in preparation for a real attack,” etc. Today was the first I’ve heard about multiple fighters, and yesterday was the first I heard that Syria might have come into possession of a North Korean nuke.
If the Move On ad had been an ad for Coca Cola- it would have been the most successful ad ever created- ran once and we’re still talkin about it.
rwcole @ 124
No, the Republicans will continue to use it to split the progressive movement from Congressional Democrats, and if the Dems are stupid enough to allow that, . . .
They have to “pivot and attack,” just as Jane said last night. That way, every time CNN/ABC ask a Dem about “Betrayus,” they get an answer that says the Bush administration has betrayed the trust of our troops and the American people. Only then will the media stop asking about MoveOn. This is gut politics, and the Dems are enough playing; they’re betraying everyone in the progressive movement.

gosh, this has been an awfully long 15 minutes…
I would expect some wingers running for office in supposedly red districts will be extending that 15 minutes right through the 2008 election.
THEY are keeping it afloat in the media.
Much to their own detriment. People might actually read it and go check out Move On a bit more closely because of this.
When they discover Move On is much more concerned about opposing the likes of Karl Rove than promoting the likes of Karl Marx, they might just join the cause.
Move On couldn’t buy the kind of PR that the R’s are giving them.
They should pen a note of thanks to Rudy, for all that free advertising.

Lincoln attacked and fired most of his generals. In Vietnam, Westmoreland’s dishonest and stupidity cost tens of thousand of lives.
Paul Begala, on the Stephanie Miller show last week, said as a response to the pearl clutching about the Patreaus/Betrayus mess that the fact that Patreus should somehow not be criticized just because he is in uniform, “well, he ain’t the Baby Jesus!”
(it was funnier when he said it)
As far as the MoveOn headline goes, I really don’t think it mattered what the headline was. The same spin would have occurred. The whole idea was for the spinners to decry the headline while obfuscating the content.
I appreciate the gentle way that Jane explained that some Democrats don’t know when to STFU when it comes to kicking the folks who keep feeding them, and God only knows why.

Whenever the matter comes up, I’d like to see it refocused on Petraeus, his political ambitions, and his breaking ranks with the rest of the military (most especially Fallon) regarding the need for the surge troopers in Afghanistan, where the real war is occurring. The meme should get out there that when an emperor loses his military credibility, he can always find a sycophantic general to speak for him. Petraeus is Bush’s sycophant.
the “Betrayus” ad is the Angelyne of antiwar media….
not everyone likes to see her all over, but she gets their attention.
The traitor Gen. Petraeus – who sacrifices US troops for his ambition – has been permanently liked with “Betrayus” – helpfully prompted along bu the Rethug Sens.
Aside from the 200,000 or so political junkies in the US, the rest of the nation hears
“blah-blah-Iraq-Betrayus”
and Adm. Fallon
“I hate people like that”.
The more the goopers cluck and the Beltway pearl-clutches, the more Betrayus (and the policies he was purchased to advocate) gets tangled in his lies to the men and women under his command.

Also, JMHO (Ok, I’ve neever had a humble opinion) we all need to respect Elizabeth Edwards’ right to her own opinion, even if we disagree with it.
But I think she, too, has missed the question mark at the end of that Petreaus ad headline.
Military brats tend to defend their parents’ including their professins, just like the rest of us, and rightly so.
I don’t agree with her, but I think she shows courage in standing her ground. And anyone who thinks she speaks for the Edwards campaign in this didn’t read her statement very closely.
She spoke for herself, and I have to respect her for it.
But no one will ever convince me Move On is one of the “bad guys” in any scenario, their defense of our Constitution, and their work for world peace makes them land squarely on my “good guys” list.
Sometimes, even the “good guys” disagree with each other. Like right now…
The ad was succesful in getting itself noticed- it was UNSUCCESSFUL in getting it’s message across- which was that the war is not going as well as Bush and his bagawind General say it is- they had three or four specific examples of that- which none of us can probably remember.
Randi Rhodes, (I guess among others) said that everyone should call their critters in DC and request that We the People would like to hear what Admiral Fallon has to say about all this…
hmmm
What would the story have been if not for Move-on? Petraeus was chosen because he had that “Kennedy in Uniform” look to appeal to the masses. I think what pisses the right off more is that since the general was speaking for the president, the name Betrayus hit Bush right in the face. Bush was called a traitor thru the general. Not a happy day for a man in a very bad crisis.
Astral Technician @ 150
If Fallon resigned right now, and ran for the Presidency as that missing “Republican they have all been waiting for”, he might just get the nomination…
Especially if he is willing to co-opt the truth. Now that would be refreshing coming from the R’s.
Not going to happen, but it is an interesting scenario.

There is already ethnic cleansing on a local level, and as areas get cleansed, the violence diminishes. That process would likely speed up if the U.S. left but I’m not sure that the casualties would be any more numerous.
In terms of possible analogs, one might ask what would have happened in Ireland had the British pulled out some decades ago?

If that is true, then the Dems who criticized MoveOn instead of “pivot and attack” are partly responsible. They should have been amplifying the underlying themes and facts of the ad — as Arianna did today — instead of repeating the right wing talking points. This is fundamental in how we deal with the entire debate, not just the MoveOn ad.
We can’t expect every advocate in the progressive movement to play “nice” just to avoid possible criticism. We will all make mistakes in our messaging. But when that happens, we have to stay focused on countering the right wing narrative, instead of repeating it. Levin repeated it; Kerry repeated it. They are just as much a part of the problem as the “mistake” they think MoveOn committed.

I’ve long thought that Petraeus is fair game, especially on the fact that he took the job of running the surge (which came with a fourth star) back in January saying that the surge had only a one-in-four chance of success.
I don’t think that was the act of an honorable man. The surge was bound to lead to a lot of additional U.S. and Iraqi-civilian casualties. All for a one-in-four chance of success. And now, he speaks out of both sides of his mouth. To congress he says that the surge is succeeding, by which he means that casualty rates have dropped a bit in certain areas. But that’s not the objective. To his troops he admitted in a 9/7 letter:
In fact political progress is the objective. Without political progress, there is no success.
WRT Petraeus being opolitical, didn’t some Iraq military guy get caught being political not too long ago at a rally and get a pay cut or something? Anyone remember something like that?

Ads aren’t supposed to make you remember their specific statements, they’re supposed to make you remember their “product” and overall theme, which this one did. It’s the Overton Window — I’d say the purpose of the ad wasn’t to make everyone agree with it, it was to push the boundary of what’s acceptable to discuss. A plurality of Americans didn’t think Petraeus would tell the truth about Iraq. Did the ad help in that regard? Who knows, but it didn’t hurt. While some Dems have had the poor judgment to get caught in the trap of criticizing the ad, I haven’t seen any who are afraid to question Petraeus’ view.
(Also, according to Brian Williams, the ad pissed off Bush, which is a big plus in my book! *g*)

I still say that Moveon.org used the classic Ann Coulter tactic.
Launch a personal attack and back it up with facts. When people object to the personal attack you then point to the facts, or alleged facts in Coulter’s case and say that the hyperbole was needed to draw attention the argument.
I still am on record as seeing the Moveon ad as a cheap political tactic that would make Ann Coulter or Newt Girngrich proud.

Except Anne and Newt don’t use facts, and that is a KEY difference.
We need more attacks such as the great MoveOn.org ad. There should be more like these every day. It is an attack based on facts and truth and passion.
The more the piggie bushies and their corporate journalist enablers, cry and complain the better. The corruption and violence needs to be thrown in their face. Remember, they are “playing” for October or November. The loss of life and treasure, is a small price to pay for their imperialism-as Boner says.
Is Petreaus’ oath to protect the constitution or to obey the President? Seriously, doesn’t the military require an oath to protect the constitution?
If so, then we should all make that point more clearly when arguing Move On’s case.
If Petreaus is protecting the President and not The People, IT IS BETRAYAL. Gonzales did it, we know that for sure, but are a military officer’s obligations to the President, not the Constitution?
Whether out of ignorance or contempt, when a military officer obeys an order, from ANY superior, that they know is detrimental to the basic premises of the constutitution, aren’t they breaking their own code?
Maybe that is what Fallon was getting at…
Or am I mistaken, is Bush supposed to defend the constitution, and the military obey his every command, supposing he would never trash that “GD piece of paper?” Or is their real obligation to defy the President when he is clearly violating the constitution?
Am I missing something here. Or was “A few Good Men” total fiction.
Morning Everyone!

I see the phrase “Honest decent Republicans with integrity” and I double over with laughter. If there is a Republican that fits that description…how sad that it is someone deaf, dumb and blind, and therefore cannot make themselves known. ALL of the candidates running to replace the messiah fell all over themselves trying to get close enough to kiss his ass, just 3 short years ago. So certainly NONE of them qualify for this phantom crown. Not one has stood up in public and called for impeachment of a war criminal and his accomplices. Nor has any of the aiding and abetting Democratic criminals…with one exception (Kucinich calls for CHENEY’s head).

Lots of speculation wrt all nuke stories these days, but no real hard evidence, except of the airplane flying around with cruise missiles in tow.

I began to feel sorry for McCain when Kerry was shredding him and McCain just sat there dejected with nothing to say.
Of course, McCain came back later with a short finale flourish and look of triumph. But, the man just does not know when he’s done.

Thanks Franco for bringing up the whole ad thing. Now let’s talk about how many hundreds of thousands of people have died because of George W. Bush and how we’re going to vote for somebody who will stop the war. You do want to stop the war, don’t you Franco?
Ummm, yeah.

Or even more conveniently, a web site with all that neatly organized.
Great idea!
