i do know that cheney lied to the saudis (and us) about the iraqi forces threatening them…. in order to be allowed to station our military on saudi soil. we got the bases, although we had to promise it was only temporary. of course that was a lie too… we stayed and we got 911.

That’s her. One of the few people I REALLY want to see opened up in public under oath. I think she has secrets to tell. big ones.

i do think that permanent bases to replace the saudi bases (which we gave up when we invaded iraq) were considered an important goal for force projection. and probably for launching attacks on iran.

you have actually picked up on something that I have long suspected but cannot prove (yet). Remember the odd behavior of the us charge d affaires who was in Baghdad the day before the iraqi invasion? she spoke with sadam, went home and retired that day. testified before the senate closed doors later, no details revealed. And it has long been known that iraq viewed kuwait as a breakaway province, we even mouthed lip service about it when we were in bed with sadam.

and what has spooked me is that sadam went to the border with sa and STOPPED. We had nothin there and couldn’t get anything there for a month. he could have been all over those oil fields in a week (the saudi armed forces are largely a joke) and we couldn’t have done crap.

OTOH, if we had moved our forces in and checked his, and there had been no fighting, we would then have been in position to prevent another shutdown of saudi oil supplies as happened in the 1973 war in Israel. I suspected at the time that this was the goal plain and simple.

But we attacked instead. Now if sadam’s air force had been able to use all its shiny soviet anti-air missiles we’d have lost dozens if not hundreds of planes and the war would have ground on for YEARS. But, as I heard the ambassador to the US from the USSR say on Larry king, Russia kindly provided us the radar frequency shifting algorithm and frequencies of those radars. publicly in the defense sector. so it was a cakewalk.

but we left sadam in power. had to keep forces in the region to contain him. Just like I felt we were planned to do in the first place.
