Chris Van Hollen, chairman of the DCCC, is more the kind of guy who reaches out to the grassroots than his odious predecessor, the Democrats’ version of Tom DeLay, uber-insider Rahm Emanuel. Unlike Emanuel, CVH has regular conference calls with grassroots and netroots Democrats and solicits information from many diverse sources.
On recent conference calls he has been adamant that Democrats have a golden opportunity to pick up a southern California congressional seat because of the ethics mess of CA-42′s rep., Gary Miller, has made for himself.
CA-42, an Inland Empire district where Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Orange County meet, is very Republican. Only 37% of votes cast there in 2004 went for Kerry and last year the extreme right-wing incumbent ran unopposed. A great many people commute back and forth to work and spend an awful lot of time in miserable traffic being brainwashed by Hate Talk radio.
Progressives and anti-war activists in Southern California have been even more determined than the DCCC that Miller’s days of free rides were over. Netroots activists recruited a fellow blogger, Ron Shepston, a Kossack, and we’re really proud to welcome him to Blue America for a chat this morning. (For background, here are a dozen excellent blog posts about this race.)
I spoke with Ron a few days ago, who’s still figuring out how to juggle a full-time job, a family life and his campaign. He lives in Silverado in the foothills of the Cleveland National Forest, not far from Mission Viejo.
He reminds me a little of Charlie Brown, probably because he’s an Air Force vet who served in the Vietnam War. He’s 60 years old and he supports impeachment and an end to the occupation of Iraq… now. He’s very much a “won’t back down” kind of guy– the opposite of a mealy-mouthed, overly cautious apologist for Republicans.
“The facts,” he said, “warrant impeachment hearings. We have to do the right thing. Without a doubt the facts warrant the process.”
In honor of one of the only candidates to have the cajones to come on here and say it in plain English, the first 20 people who donate at least $30 to Ron’s campaign today at Blue America get a free “Impeach Cheney” cap.
His position on Iraq is also straight forward. He thinks it’s a complicated situation but our presence is “only making things worse… The American people don’t want this war and Democrats should be leading the country, not following the politics of fear.” And Ron’s own website gets right to the point on page one. No shilly-shally beating around the bush:
Defending Rule of Law under the Constitution.
Honoring—not needlessly sacrificing—troops.
Supporting fiscal responsibility: Americans deserve decent medical care and pensions—not huge budget deficits.
Making policy based on facts—not fantasies.
Working for the district—not big contributors.
Too radical and liberal for Orange County? Ron doesn’t think so at all. “There are plenty of Republican voters who are excited about having a decent candidate running against Miller. People in the district don’t feel he represents them. He seems to help his developer friends and doesn’t bring much to the district…People here are angry about the assault on the Constitution.”
Update: “Impeach Cheney” hats, get ‘em while they’re hot — 10 left, free with a $30 donation!

About Firedoglake
I’ve heard the radio in that district- enough to curdle yer blood..Good luck!!
Welcome Ron, you are showing a lot of courage to jump into this race.
Thanks rwcole. I think people here are more concerned than you might think by listening to the radio. I don’t think radio accurately reflects how concerned and ready for progressive change the people of Orange County are.
Welcome to FDL, Ron. You have a tough row to hoe. How can we, as bloggers, help you?
There’s almost zero publicity in the district about Miller’s ethics problems. Can that be changed?
Welcome Ron.
Thank you for coming to the Lake.
I’m not afraid of a challenge. I look for them. There are a lot of people who are showing a lot of courage in dealing with the mess that Bush and Republicans have given us. I’m glad that I can be here to represent them and the idea of fighting for American values is enough to make the challenge worth taking on.
Pictures from last month’s OC protest:

It was huge.
OT with apologies
cleter. i left a reply at 182 downstairs. hope it explains a little.
Thanks Adie. I’m honored to be here.
Badwater. Yes and it will be. Because so few people even know Gary Miller’s name let alone his ethical problems.
That gives us a huge upside potential.
howieklein @ 4
This is Greg Diamond, aka Major Danby, Ron’s campaign manager, and of course I’m glad you asked.
Part of what we need, as is drilled into our skulls by every political professional we talk to and everyone who has great services that they can’t provide us for free, is contributions, but I’m not going to belabor that. The netroots community can do much more.
First, the netroots is a source of great info, ideas, and networking opportunities. We learn a lot by seeing what people do here.
Second, our need for volunteers of all levels — skilled ones, ones that can help with clerical tasks, precinct organizers — is immense. (And not just us — this is true of progressive candidates everywhere.) We have lots of places where people can fit in and we’ll be pitching that in the months to come. Anyone who is willing to help out can write me directly at greg@ronshepston.com, and for sure tell me that Howie sent you!
The political discussion on the radio is only surpassed by the religious shows- where guys who got their preacher credentials out of a cracker jack box wax loudly about salvation at the wholesale level.
Every year the cost of health insurance goes up by far more than the cost of inflation, is there a reason for this? Is this fair?
rwcole
One of things that people will surprised is the number of good progressive people who go to those churches. I know some of them and once we get our message out they will vote for me.
Badwater @ 5
For people that don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s a site chronicling some of this biggest problems. I wasn’t able to open the site just now so I’m going to go verify the URL. We’re not associated with the site, but we know good work when we see it!
[Mod: Trash Dirty Gary]
“Defending the Rule of Law under the Constitution” — that’s what I’m looking for. Didn’t we already agree on that a couple hundred years ago?
Donations to Blue America: I’m in.
Welcome Greg– and thanks for the help in setting this session up. I hope everyone is aware that we’re giving away free Impeach Cheney caps with donations to Ron’s campaign of $30 or above (first 20 donors at our Blue America page).
And Greg, what about volunteers? We have a lot of FDL community members in the L.A. area and only two races so far– Ron’s and Russ Warner’s campaign against David Dreier. Do you need volunteers? And, if so, what would they do? And when?
Great news Ron, glad you are jumping in there!
I’m in, Howie. Send that hat my way.
And ditto re the volunteers. My son is in college out there, and maybe I can rouse him to help.
Sandman.
This situation is not fair for the people who use the system. Those who see health care as strictly a business that only seeks to maximize profit need to be taken out of the equation.
We need a system that works for the health of the people and I think single payer does that.
Major Danby @ 16
The site is Trash Dirty Gary. [nomoredirtygary.blogspot.com] You can see why these transactions aren’t part of the material that Miller reports to his constituents!
Here in Florida, home insurance companies including Allstate and Statefarm are dropping homeowners polices by the thousands some after 20 years of coverage, are you seeing the same in CA due to fires and earthquakes?
By the way the insurance companies give 90% of their money to Republicans in Florida.
Ron,
I wanted to drop by here and again wish you luck.
I enjoyed talking to you at Yearly Kos and I know you have what it takes for the long haul that is coming.
You have a great staff of smart, energetic people and I look forward to working with you along the trail, and as members of the 111th Congress.
Barry Welsh
Indiana 6th District Democratic Congressional Candidate
egregious:
Very good. This is one of those things that is so obvious that it’s amazing that we are confronted with such an assault on the Constitution.
But it’s not surprising. There have always been and there will always be people who want to make their live better at the expense of others.
We are at one of those moments that will ultimately shape the course of our history and we have to be ready to expose those who mean to harm America and it’s citizens.
Major Danby @ 12
One fast suggestion: it might help if your website was a bit more informative. There’s nothing but placeholders under the “news & events” and “issues” buttons. Not a single upcoming event listing, and not a single statement about any issue.
Ron, you’ve got some good DKos posts on various issues. It ought to be pretty easy for you (or someone at your campaign) to quickly rework them into issue statements for your campaign website.
Gary Miller facts
Good to see you here Barry. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you’ll become a Blue America regular!
howieklein @ 18
Those are some mighty fine caps, Howie!
Right now, we’ve been concentrating on getting our early fundraising in gear (which means that if anyone out there has a background in fundraising or has time and would like to develop one, write me.) We need clerical help keeping track of names, looking up contacts, and the like. But there’s much more.
Gary Miller is about as ripe and low-hanging a piece of fruit as you’re going to find in Congress. There is a lot of research to be done on his atrocious record, along with some things I won’t mention here. We need help with that.
We need precinct captains. If anyone reading this is in or near CA-42 — I’ll give the boundaries of that territory in a separate post — we want to start organizing precincts now.
We are going to be doing a lot of canvassing, and that is a heavily volunteer effort.
We want Ron to be meeting people, voters and donors, and people in the LA area in particular will be invaluable help towards that.
I want to post this now, but will add more as it occurs to me.
Thank you Barry. You are one of the pioneers and giants of our movement and I’m honored to know you.
With people like you on our side I feel good about our chances at restoring American values.
Barry Welsh @ 24
Barry, anyone who has not seen you speak has missed out on something amazing. You were a dynamo at Yearly Kos and our campaign wishes you the best. We look forward to playing basketball against your office when you and Ron are both in DC next year.
Welcome, Ron & Major Danby, and hi to Barry Welsh.
Count me in, I want a hat, Howie.

Peterr @ 26
Hello! I’m not quite in your district — one or two over — but I’ve been reading about your candidacy with interest since I first spotted it on Calitics. It’s great to see you here on FDL — as a relative newcomer here myself I’ve been very impressed with the caliber of people here in the last month.
I see people have already covered many of the basics, such as health insurance, lack of knowledge of Millers ethics (I didn’t know either; and I generally keep an eye on politics!) and so on. But I’ve got one for you that’s a huge one given this region: transportation. The famous southern California gridlock can be summed up with one finger pointed at the 91 freeway, practically throughout all three counties in your district. OC has been famously against expansion of alternative transportation particularly light rail. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts about transportation, including freeway, (light) rail, the Ontario airport and so on.
I’ll drop a line to the email address Danby gave above and see what I can do in terms of volunteering.
Sandman
I haven’t heard that but we will look into it. Insurance is meant to make people’s lives easier and in this case it’s not working. We need to do something about it.
Can you send me some links on this issue if can readily find them? We’ll do some research.
You mean you want a second hat, Jane? That one you were wearing yesterday is the hat I’m talking about. I’m in a matching mood. How about some folks giving to both Ron and Barry? I’m match donors who contribute to both these great candidates up to whatever I have left after taking Jane shopping at Target.
Peterr @ 26
Sorry about the mispost above. This is a good suggestion. We plan to have a state-of-the-art professional website done before long — we have not signed a contract, but we know who we want and it’s just a matter of our raising the money to get it underway — and have left the relatively undeveloped website we have now as a placeholder in the meantime. But you’re right that it can and should incorporate more of our text from our netroots rollout in the interim. Thanks for the good advice.
howieklein @ 28
Thank you Howie for all that you do, and thank you to all of you for all that you are doing. I come by and read often, but as for Blue America, all of us that are running are really in this together, because one of us alone can not make the changes that are necessary. We as candidates need to support each other because we are the only ones that really understand what the others are going through, so I plan to be a Blue America regular, well at least as often as the schedule allows! Thank you again, and please support Ron Shepston in CA-42!
howieklein @ 36
Sorry I cleaned you out at Target, Howie. What can I say? Sometimes it ain’t “cheaper to keep her.”
I do look good in my hat. And I made a contribution to Barry as well, so maybe that’s what I do to earn my second hat (which Kobe will proudly wear).
Jane Hamsher @ 32
Jane, it’s great to have the chance to thank you for all the good you do here. I’m sorry to have arrived too late at the Blogoalooza party last weekend to meet you in person. (I took a wrong turn and ended up in Camarillo. The city, not the hospital.) Ron would have been there as well but was chained to the telephone and calling donors.
Only 37% of votes cast there in 2004 went for Kerry and last year the extreme right-wing incumbent ran unopposed. A great many people commute back and forth to work and spend an awful lot of time in miserable traffic being brainwashed by Hate Talk radio.
Reminds me of where I live. Go, Ron Shepston, California’s newest Congressman!
You might consider developing a cool graphic that shows how Dirty Gary is tied to corruption, like the one on Rep. Don Young (R-Abramoff) I helped develop for the Democratic Party up here in Alaska. When it comes to idiocy on the levels of Young and Miller, humor helps a lot.
Major Danby at 29
Please do give us the boundaries, we have a lot of people at firedoglake who live there or near there or have friends and relatives who might be persuaded to help you.
howie
Great idea Howie and thanks. I love seeing Barry getting as much help as he can get. He deserves it and more.
Peterr @ 26
We know–we’re working on doing just that.
Sandman @ 14
No, it’s not fair–and it hurts everybody, from the uninsured to the underinsured, from small business to large business. It’s definitely something the campaign will be hitting hard, and focusing on how little Gary Miller has done on the issue.
We are retired, and finally able to do a bit of travelling, mainly on Elderhostel trips.
Every place we go, we meet up with progressives from all over the country.
Many fellow travellers seem very frustrated, feeling they are alone and isolated, their voices not heard in their home states. A considerable number act shocked that they easily find so many like-minded folk on these trips.
We in red/or “purple” areas also remain very concerned over the possibility of election fraud. In northeastern Ohio just this past week, 200 absentee ballots were simply discounted in a primary election because of a supposed mistake in routing within the U.S. Post Office. Even though the Post Office admitted it was their error that delayed delivery, the OH Secy of State invalidated the ballots. It’s hard to know how to fight this sort of thing when you never know where it will come from.
So… 2 questions for you:
1) Ron, what do you think we citizens can do, especially living in supposedly “red” areas of the country, to help encourage candidates such as yourself? Obviously we can contribute to campaign coffers, but beyond that?
2) We in Ohio apparently still have work to do in order to protect our right to vote, and to have that vote counted. Suggestions?
Ed*ard Teller @ 41
Very clever! We’ve got a graphic designer or two onboard–I’ll give this a second look!
Ed*ard Teller at 41.
Thanks, that is a great graphic. I’ll save it and pass it along to others to consider something appropriate to Miller.
Ron Shepston @ 48
Yeah, I LOVE it. Can you e-mail it to me, Edward? I want to use it at DWT.

pssst… he may have a ringer….
Sir,
My husband was a Vietnam vet and POW, who was tortured by his North Vietnamese captors. He lived with his injuries for over thirty years, until his fatal heart attack two years ago.
My question, a question I am asking all candidtates, is: What will you do to remove torture as the law, policy and practice of the United States?
Torture is ALWAYS wrong, no matter who is doing it to whom.
For Dan,
Heather
Bush raised spending by 41% and tax revenue by only 21%, would you be willing to cut other programs to save Social Security and Medicare?
It is hard for me not to laugh when a Rebpublican says they are for smaller government.
The best place to get a quick grasp of the district is here: Wikipedia on CA-42
Ron Shepston @ 48
Here’s another one, developed this morning by one of our resident Da Vincis – darkblack. I call it flaming pork! I’m sure she’d help you create a similar image of Rep. Miller…
howieklein @ 49
On the way, Prof. Klein.
peanutbutter @ 34
I’m going to take this one because Ron’s submit comment just dropped out and he has to sign in again.
Why do we have such bad transportation here? Lack of public transit for one thing, but one big reason is too many cars. Part of this is because there has been not enough responsibility placed on developers — like Gary Miller and his campaign financier friends — to develop with an eye towards the effects on the larger community. They’re like a factory that produces a product, profits wildly, but can make that profit partly by dumping its waste products in the river. In Southern California, the river is the freeways and the waste product is cars.
We’ll be developing this theme in our campaign. We are not opposed to all development, but we’re opposed to irresponsibility and people keeping the profit while dumping the costs onto the public at large.
peanutbutter @ 34
My computer hung while posting that last comment, by the way, but I’m back now. I also want to thank you for your interest in campaigning. If you can tell me where you are, I can probably tell you who else is running in your area. We love having volunteers, but we know that our other friends running in this area need them as well, and we’re working towards a united front.
Major Danby @ 56
I’d bet your district would be perfect for a light rail system. Has there been any talk of that at all?
I’m trying to get Jane to model her Impeach Cheney cap. If I do can we get some contributions for Ron’s campaign?
Ed*ard Teller @ 41
It never fails to amaze me how much talent there is out there in the blogosphere. Just imagine what would happen if we could harness it for good — oh, wait, that’s what we’re doing! Thanks and we wish our friends in Alaska the best. They will have a full time this cycle, I’ll bet.
Adie at 46
Two great questions Adie. There’s no magic but you’ve already displayed the most important thing you need – a willingness and desire to help.
What I found that got me where I am is to keep talking to other activists and letting them know you want help. If a particular person doesn’t respond to that then try someone else.
I know that doesn’t seem like much help but if you drop me an email I’ll do what I can to help you develop this more.
One of the ideas we and other campaigns have been developing is that of a real progressive caucus. The idea is to present a common brand that will draw in others.
There will be a website for helping activists and those wanting to help around the country.
thereisnospoon @ 53
Those maps aren’t detailed enough. I can’t tell from those where I fall in, when I checked a while back (when I first heard about Shepston).
This one does the trick nicely though: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/findyourreps.xpd
howieklein @ 59
I would even if Jane didn’t model the cap but I’m a broke DFH
I want to help with this one.
howieklein @ 58
Miller is on the Transportation Committee, and has proposed some projects that have bipartisan support, some big projects that I don’t know have much of a chance like a train from the Inland Empire to Vegas, but from what I understand his actual energy and effort is going into expanding the toll road further south into Orange County. Guess who owns the land that would increase in value next to this extended road? But I am getting ahead of myself.
Light rail is absolutely an option that will need to be researched. Ron is an engineer — a professional technological problem-solver. I think people might trust him to come up with solutions more than the wealthy developer — with Ken Calvert, we call them the Traffic Twins — that we have in there now.
howieklein @ 58
It gets stomped on like an ugly slug everytime it comes up. We desperately need light rail here, but the OC politicos quash it every time. I’m hoping for a crack in the armor here.
Miller’s proposed projects seem to mostly benefit Miller and his cronies.
peanutbutter @ 65
The LA County portions of the district have commuter trains now.
Hello, Mr Shepston, and thanks for stopping by today. Welcome as well to your team.
Coupla quick questions:
1. Is Miller so damaged that the GOP might persuade him to step aside? Might he be challenged in a primary?
2. How would you have voted on the Hate Crimes Bill?
3. Have you lent your voice to those calling on California’s governor to sign AB43 making marriage gender-neutral?
Thanks again for your visit to BlueAmerica and FDL today!
PS — ET, that graphic rocks; we need one for every gop crook!
Chacounne at 51.
I’m so sorry about Dan. I can only imagine what he and you as a couple went through as a result of the torture he suffered in Nam.
This is really an easy one to deal with for me on so many levels but if I were in Congress today and when I’m there in 2009 this will be important enough to me to physically walk up to those who support the use of torture and ask them “Are you out of your mind?”
Torture does not work and only exposes our own soldiers to it in retaliation later and people like Dan and you and society in general will pay the price.
It is most certainly morally wrong and it doesn’t work. Those who encourage and condone its use do so for reasons other than obtaining information and those reasons must be exposed so that we can stop it.
Clearly we must restore the adherence to the Geneva Conventions as a start but we must go further so that Americans will see the value in eliminating torture.
egregious @ 42
Our district spans three counties and borders a fourth (Riverside.) It’s shaped a bit like Italy, and I think that its geographic center may actually be in another district! (See, I need a volunteer cartographer to check that out.)
In LA County, we start with East Whittier (including Whittier College), then eastward through La Habra Heights, Rowland Heights, and Diamond Bar. In San Bernardino, we have Chino and Chino Hills. (There are additional smatterings of unincorporated areas throughout all this.) About half of the district is in Orange County, and here let’s all tip a hat to the drunken monkeys that the GOP had do its redistricting.
We start in La Habra on the Whittier border, then eastward through Brea (my fair city) and Yorba Linda, just missing Cal State Fullerton (but still an easy commute for students who’d like to volunteer. Ditto for UCI!) We take a right through Anaheim Hills and eastern Placentia and cover the OC portion of the Canyon area — Trabuco, Silverado (Ron’s home), Dove, etc. Then we hit Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and a bit of Los Flores.
Major Danby @ 64
Oh, yes, that would be the one to extend the tollroad (let’s not even get on the subject of tollroads themselves) TO A $#@!& GOLF COURSE. Yes, so Miller and his buddy bud buds can zip right thru the traffic to lob a few before going into their offices. Despite the fact that such a road would obliterate protected beach areas (they actually have to lobby for an exception to allow this toll road to break State law)…aaaagggghhh. This is getting a lot of opposition, and it needs more, in order to be stopped.
In any case, tollroads, as just a lipsticked version of a freeway pig, are not the answer to congestion in this area. :-)
I should hope so. Some well thought out plans in this area could be very attractive.

Thanks so much. We tried to get Kobe to model but his management was making unreasonable demands about nothing but Cristal in his water dish. Since Kobe’s never actually had Cristal we figured he was just being a dick and didn’t want to set a precedent.
OK, I’m in. Ron, best of luck.
Howie, any chance of getting the ActBlue page to remember my information? It takes me awhile to type.
Also, thanks for all you do

That will lead you to a very detailed pdf map of the 42nd.

I’ll contribute just to get the woman out of that shameful Yankees cap.
TeddySanFran @ 67
I’m going to handle this one while Ron does heavy lifting elsewhere. (And we are rocked by all this action here, by the way, everyone!)
What we hear through the grapevine is that Miller is in for the duration, arrogant as Abramoff, determined as Doolittle, convinced as Cunningham, nervy as Ney. We are OK with that! We don’t think he’ll be primaried, let alone withdraw. But if it happens, we’ll just have to rely on the fact that people don’t like an unpopular war, destruction of our Constitution, etc. to carry us through!
I’m not sure which Hate Crimes bill you mean, nor of its provisions.
We haven’t gotten involved with state bills, since they’re not going to be part of Ron’s portfolio in Congress, except to endorse the Courage Campaign’s fight against the unconstitutional plan to give 20-22 of California’s electoral votes to the GOP. In Congress, Ron will oppose bills to prevent gays from having the same substantive rights that heterosexuals do, and will vote for bills that ensure those rights.
pleaded guilty to federal charges TeddySanFran @ 67
Miller’s predecessor, Republican Jay Kim, pleaded guilty to accepting and concealing illegal campaign contributions and the GOP did not ask him to step aside. He was defeated in the primary. It still amazes me and I doubt the GOP will ever ask Miller to step aside. Rules are different for Republics.
thereisnospoon @ 45
This gives me the chance to introduce thereisnospoon (real name disclosed at his option), who many of you know from his posts on many fine progressive blogs, who is our congenial campaign strategist!

Jane just asked me the same question. Mine remembers everything but the credit card #. Jane thinks you need to login in for it to remember stuff. Our contact person at ActBlue who can help with this kind of stuff is Erin (erin@actblue.com).
Ron Shepston @ 68
Fantastic! The image of this actually happening will literally make me sleep better tonight. It’s been exciting to watch this new crop of Liberal Democrats who aren’t afraid to call people out, instead of all these triangulating pansies that are worried about how the media might portray them. The truth will set you free – Always!
My question: Are you afraid that Rep. Miller “Lite” might challenge you to a duel?
(dude seems weird…he’s also got a photo series of Ronnie Raygun’s casket arriving in D.C. on his web site.)
Kick some major butt, Mr. Shepston! We got yer back, brotha!
Okay, the much-sought after “Impeach Cheney” hat has been added to the post.
Lizzy at 71
Thank you Lizzy. Some issues are more difficult than others to address but this one is easy and clear cut.
This has been a terrific session, Ron. Appreciate you answers and your willingness to come here and talk to us.
Sandman @ 52
Step 1 will be rolling back Bush tax cuts. Step 2 will be recouping money we find was diverted via war profiteering and other rotten schemes during the Bush years that will call for full investigation. Will some programs need to be cut? Depends on how the other steps go, but regardless, Ron will preserve the safety and security of Social Security and Medicare. People depend on these, especially as Republicans have allowed our pension, housing, and health care systems to twist in the wind.
howieklein @ 59
We want the contributions. But we really want to see Jane model the cap too!

The northern part of the district has a high percentage of residents whose first language is Chinese. Are you planning anything special to reach out to those voters?
Thank you so much, Mr. Shepston.
You are so right about needing to move the hearts and minds of Americans to stop torture. I am ready, willing and able to do whatever you need to help with this. I have written letters and blogs and speeches and spoken to Congressmen and women, and Senators on this. Please feel free to contact me at chacounne @ gmail dot com
I look forward to having you sponosr or co-sponsor legislation that will restore the Geneva Conventions and Habeas Corpus, and outlaw torture.
For Dan,

Great picture Jane!!
Sandman at 82
Sorry I clicked the wrong button.
NCLB is wrong on several levels not the least of which are underfunding and teaching to the test. It doesn’t do anything to provide children with the fundamentals of becoming contributing members of society.
I’ve been working with teacherken over at DKos often on this and we’ve been talking about how best to work on this issue.
Ultimately, there’s no problem with accountability but it has to make sense and not punish schools who take on the task of educating special needs students which is what NCLB does. NCLB does in fact by design leave many children behind and is so flawed that one wonders what it’s true intent is.
I think it’s a mistake to think that something so flawed can be fixed. It’s time for a different approach. It’s time for one that works.
OT, but necessary in response to the praises for the Don Young graphic I helped create. Several people were in on it. Howie even had a hand it it last year, by encouraging me to do even more thorough research than he had done on Don Young’s ties to Jack Abramoff. We used that research material in helping make the ties.
But Kay Brown, the Communications Director for the Alaska Democratic Party probably deserves the lioness’s share of the credit. Like what future Rep. Shepston is relying on down at that crazy place called Southern California, a lot of efforts coalesced up here in this crazy place that is Alaska, upset by the layers and layers of GOP corruption, ineptness and greed.
egregious @ 99
Thanks, egregious. Got the shirt when I cleaned Howie out at Target.
The hats are awesome, EVERYONE is going to want one.
Ron, can’t tell you how excited I am about your candidacy.
Fortunately, I have an easy way to demonstrate it, so there’ll be little scratch coming your way from Texas via Act Blue.
We fight.
TeddySanFran @ 81
Thanks, Teddy. In general, I just want to stress to people that Ron is not simply coming *to* the netroots for support, he is coming *from* the netroots. As CanYouBeAngryAndStillDream on Daily Kos, he was an active and popular blogger for over two years (right after Nov. 2004) before having any inkling of running for Congress.
I mention this because where there is a strong consensus on netroots issues — as, no matter how much we argue, there often is — it’s a good bet that Ron will be part of that consensus and a guarantee that his ears and mind will be open to what people here have to say.
Major Danby @ 56
‘Sprawl’ is a huge issue, and it doesn’t fall down Dem/Republican lines. I’m in the Pacific Northwest, and whether you talk with people in Boise, Kalispell, Missoula, Spokane, Portland, Seattle, Tacoma, or Vancouver, WA, people are really p*ssed.
Sprawl is what happens when housing developers finance large portions of political campaigns, particularly throughout the American West. (The builders then get laws that require others to subsidize their activities and profits.)
It’s not ‘partisan’ to insist on more responsible development; the better developers are farther ahead on ‘green construction’.
Glad to see that Ron is seeing in CA what I see farther north — plenty of (formerly moderate) Republicans who are deeply indignant about the lunacy and corruption that’s occurred in this nation.
[Making calendar note to donate to Barry after the 15th.]

For Howie: I hope you know about Pandora, http://www.pandora.com/
From the Music Genome Project. Absolutey fantastic!
I just want to state for the record that I will NOT, repeat, NOT be participating in any sort of basketball games between the offices of Representatives Ron Shepston and my guy Barry Welsh. I am not the ringer, but I did manage the basketball team in HS and can keep a scorebook. I’m also right there for you with the ace wrap for the inevitable sprains that will happen.
Ron Shepston @ 100
Damn. When are you forming your Presidential Exploratory Committee? I’m really diggin these answers!
Another question: What is the best way to combat terrorism?
Ron you sound like the real deal. I have worked on quite a few campaigns in my life, the last one was with my Former Congressman Ted Strickland (D) who is now Ohio’s Democratic Governor. As Strickland went around the state of Ohio campaigning his focus was on uniting Republicans and Democrats on core issues that matter to all of us. He endlessly repeated that these core issues (Education, Health care, fair wages etc) had nothing to do with what party you belonged to. That “some” individuals in both parties and independents are committed to fair and honorable values and that we should focus on these issues TOGETHER. 30% of the Republicans in Ohio that voted, voted for Strickland.
If I were you I would consult with Governor Strickland about his approach in picking up the Republican votes. I am sure he would like to share some insiders clues.

Ron Shepston @ 90
That is certain. But in areas undergoing rapid demographic changes that are reflected in student population pressures, kids and schools suffer, whether they are well off or not. A lot of people are moving to where I live from Russia and the Ukraine – mostly fundamentalist and evangelical Christians. Many of the schools in the areas they are choosing to live in are having to rapidly become dual language environments, and the burden is showing in the NCLB results in schools that are middle class and have long histories of student achievement.
Ron Shepston at 68
So you are in favor of supporting the Constitution -and- the Geneva Conventions…I thank you.
How did our country get to this point, where these became optional? Have we lost our collective soul?
bonkers @ 84
Challenging to a duel? Ron will be too humble to address that himself, but he is a former athlete (whose chances for a professional baseball career were derailed by the Vietnam War draft) and at 60 is still a long-distance (200 miles per week) cyclist who did a 100 mile race as recently as last month.
OK, that’s not about the issues, I know, but it tells you something about his drive and determination.
I’m sorry to have to leave – we’re going out tonight & the clock won’t stop ticking….
Thank you for coming Ron.
I saved some info so I can write you directly later for caucus info, etc.
I wish you well.

You know the district. We know that the Taiwanese Chinese have their own set of concerns and education is one of the most important. We plan to talk to them about that because as I’ve said elsewhere it’s a critically important issue for our country.
We do actually have as part of our group someone who speaks fluent Chinese. Though not directly relevant but important is the fact that my daughter-in-law is Vietnamese and has some of the same concerns.
Her family has an amazing story to tell and that helps me to better understand the concerns of that part of the district.
Hey Ron, I’m curious to know what you would do about the Medicare Part D coverage “donut hole” issue. Currently the situation has a lot of Medicare patients left holding the bag on drug costs after a few months into the year if they have a number of prescriptions they rely on.
Major Danby @ 111
Wow. As an almost full-time bicycle commuter myself, that does say a lot to me. Excellent.
Late to the party as usual. Are there any hats left? I want one, especially if I will look as good as Jane does while wearing mine.
OT: CNN is reporting a new name being floated for AG. I think it is the one Looseheadprop advocated – former federal judge Michael Mukasey. I’ll grab the link in a bit.
howieklein @ 95
Howie, this is amazing. Thank you, and thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.
I want to say a little bit about fundraising. Ron is not able to self-fund. He’s going to take a financial hit by choosing to run this race, as I am in managing it, but this is what you do if you believe in a 435-district strategy and believe that there are lots of Democrats tiptoeing around OC and the rest of our area who are waiting to be energized.
The first step in funding is to go after what the pros call “relational” contacts — people who know you from your community. Large donors want to see that the people who know you will fund you before they step into supporting you in any big way.
The netroots *is* a relational contact for Ron. As CanYouBeAngryAndStillDream, people know him (and, I can attest, like him.) That means that the money we get at places like this is money that we can show to people and say “look, we aren’t rich, but we can actually do this.” Every dollar has an impact far beyond its face value. (I know that most people here, who know what EMILY’s List stands for, already get it.)
This is a difficult road to travel and all of you make it easier. I believe that we collectively — we donors (I’m one too), and candidates like Ron, Mark Pera, Barry Walsh, and so on — are scaring the hell out of Republicans and DINOs throughout the country. It’s a satisfying thing to be part of it. And I’ll tell you, the minute the Republican Party has to shell out to firm up support in Miller’s district — instead of Miller being able to fund other Republican campaigns from his own coffers the way he usually does — well, try to be standing next to me when the news comes out, because I am going to be buying some drinks.
Jane Hamsher @ 102
If one comes my way, it may get ‘borrowed’ by my ancient, WWII vet, dad who’s so disgusted by Cheney he can’t stand to say the name ;-)
I suspect that some of his pals at the Senior Center and the Retirement Home are at this point quite willing to don some ‘Impeach Cheney’ caps. They’re all seem to have served in WWII.
If I get any pics of former WWII vets ‘borrowing’ the Impeach Cheney cap, I’ll send ‘em along ;-)
Scarecrow at 87
Thanks Scarecrow, I agree that the response is incredible and I love the involvement and the great questions.
This is energizing and fun and gives us a great chance to hear directly from others and learn what’s on everyone’s mind related to the campaign.
I’m still active in DKos but out of necessity I’ve had to cut back some. Seeing the response here reminds me of why we thought from the very beginning that a campaign born from the netroots could provide for a major change in American politics.
We’ve said all along that the netroots could be used to seed the grassroots and this proves the strength of that idea.
Whereas candidates like Barry Welsh, Darcy Burner, Brian Keeler and others have been pioneers in the movement I feel like they’ve paved the way for me and others to follow.
History will show that we, as in the blogosphere “we” have and will continue to make a difference.
Sites like Firedoglake and others and people like Howie and Jane deserve all the props that we can give them for giving us the forum to get our message out there.
Whoops — ‘pics’, not picks.
And I doubt their reps will insist on special water, though they have to get their meds on time ;-)
Here is the screen grab on Americablog about the AG.
twȝk @ 96
Jane and all just got off the main streets of Athens Ohio (since we were unable to get to D.C.) this weekend with our protest signs “Impeach Cheney, “give Impeachment a chance”, “Bring the troops home”. The folks I was out on the street with were the same friends that I was out on the street protesting with before the invasion.
We stood on the main drag to the farmers market and mall (lots of traffic). As gas guzzling truck and SuV’s drove by lots of vehicles with one person in them, and some hybrids, we observed that we were getting far more thumbs up, horn honking (atually a couple of times it was horn madness), and positive shouts out the window than before the invasion. People are pissed.
I am always taken back (even before the invasion) at how many of the older crowd (over 65) GET IT ! We did get some “go bomb them all” “fuck you” “the reason you can stand there is because we are in Iraq” comments. Far, Far fewer than before the invasion.
One person who was wildly nodding yes to the Impeachment signs yelled out his window “How do we Impeach”? We yelled back “give them blow jobs” just for some comic relief. The other response that was fun today was when the few folks who would shout “Go Bush”. We would shout back “To Jail” or “to Guantanamo”.
Today convinced me that if you cannot get to the big marches that we all need to get out on the streets in our own communities. If we want to get the GIVE IMPEACHMENT A CHANCE or BRING THE TROOPS HOME message out there, it is up to us to take it out there to people who may not be calling, e-mailing, lobbying, but have had enough of this Bushshit.
Let’s all push those of us who are not involved…… together!
burnspbesq @ 97
I know that Ron has answered this already, but (1) yes we will and (2) if you have ideas or insights on how best to do this, *please* write me. We want to make use of your expertise.
P.S. Rowland Heights is one of the most Democratic Parts of our district. That’s not saying much, but we think we can do well there. And we think we can take on Miller in his home of Diamond Bar. After all, they know him!
burnspbesq @ 97
This strikes me as extremely important. (Although I don’t know what the voting registration or citizenship percentages are in that region.)
I’m sorry I thought Ron was gone. I would not have posted above. I apologize
OK, on blind faith, I am making a contribution. Hat or no hat, this guy deserves it. But if there are extras, Howie . . .
Chacounne @ 98
Ron’s answering a different message right now. I just called over to him and asked “would you sponsor that?” He said “of course.” He doesn’t need to be convinced about these things; he just needs to be able to cast a vote on them!
Ron Shepston @ 119
Right on! Not sure if they ever get tired with all the praise, but I just can’t thank Howie, Jane, ReddHedd, etc enough for these opportunities. These Blue America chats are truly revolutionary. Each one of us MUST get everyone we know in our own immediate spheres to try out places like FDL. The Conglomerate Media needs to be marginalized as much as possible.
Ron Shepston @ 119
I think you’re right about the netroots/blogs, but none of that matters unless we have people with courage, principle and conviction willing to step forward and run for office — especially in tough districts like yours. You folks are the heroes. Glad we had a chance to contribute, even without the cap. And thanks to Howie/Jane and those working on your campaign. Best wishes.
Ron Shepston @ 100
This is also another area where we can really use the expertise and persuasive skills of people who understand the issues — as our friend teacherken does, and as most of the public does not. I think that wrote down what NCLB actually *does*, given its paltry funding, and if you asked people whether they believed that this was the current U.S. policy, a majority would simply refuse to believe it.
That’s what we’re up against. But that’s also why we have such a huge upside — in our district and nationally — in 2008 campaigns.
Kathleen @ 122
I mentioned this downstairs and I think it should become a theme of ours
whevever we demonstrate some of us should have a sign that says;
“supporters of bush cheney war are traitors”
that will undermine the fascists if they even think of calling US traitors
OT
Apparantly CNN floated this guy for AG… Michael B. Mukasey
Heard of him?
boadicea @ 103
Hey, homegirl! On behalf oof the campaign, thank you for the support!
finifinito at 114
Great question. Medicare Part D and especially the Donut Hole is a perfect example of a bill constructed to benefit business at the expense of users. Democrats voted against the hole but were voted down by Republicans.
Medicare Part D has to go. It can’t be “fixed” or “tweaked”.
There are so many Republican created pieces of legislation that were not even conservative but designed to help one business or another. These must be undone and dumped on the trash heap of history. Better yet they should be displayed in the museum of legislation designed specifically against the needs and desires of Americans citizens.
Business is not inherently bad. I’ve had small businesses and I can assure everyone that most small business people are not crooks. They want to conduct their business in an ethical manner. These are the people we want to help compete against those who are up to no good.
finifinito @ 106
OK, for you and me — Boggle? ;7)
Ron (this may have been asked). The interstates out there are crazy. How do you see mass transportation expanding in southern Cal?
Major Danby @ 117
Or we can just cede Congress to rich people. We practically have already. The #1 prerequisite for the DSCC and the DCCC is that a candidate be self-funding. They don’t care at all how they feel about issues or what they think of solving problems– just that they call themselves Democrats and have the ability to self fund. It makes me sick and it’s the single biggest reason John, Jane and I started Blue America. Ron is one of us. By donating to his campaign, whether it’s $5.00 or $500, we’re donating to ourselves. I don’t know how many millionaires there are in Congress, but I bet it’s a lot more than their proportion in the general population– and a lot more than people in Congress who have ever had a minimum wage job.
Kathleen at 125
No worries Kathleen. We appreciate your efforts and I want to say thanks for being there.
We need more of what you do.
Thanks Jane, Howie, Ron, and Major D.
Am about to shock the hell out of myself by going to a Town Hall being held by my Congressman today… not the way that I’d prefer to spend a Saturday afternoon, but it beats screaming at the streaming video of Gonzo on my TV screen.
I certainly intend to ask him ‘what’s up with the FCC coming out AGAINST Net Neutraility?!’ For that, I’m willing to give up a Saturday afternoon…
Thanks again, and Ron I admire your courage. Much appreciated.
(WHAT KIND of engineer is Ron, BTW…? Paging Cujo…!)
Ron Shepston @ 134
Oh man, stop. You’re making me cry now. This kind of talk is so refreshing, and can’t wait to see it coming from the House floor.
snowbird42 @ 132
Yes, I just posted about this a few comments back. I believe he is one of the acceptable candidates that Looseheadprop, one of our lawyer-writers had mentioned in one of her posts. I will go back in the archives to look to make sure I am not wrong.
Kathleen @ 108
I would love to talk to and get guidance from people from the Strickland campaign — ah, it will be so nice to see Ohio Blue in 2008! — and if you can help arrange any of that Ron and I would really appreciate it. Progressive Democrats have been very generous with their advice so far. It’s the way politics ought to work!
Major Danby @ 133
My pleasure, homeboy. ;) Means a slight delay in framing some very pretty pictures, but I think my priorities are in the right order.
Hi All… Are there ANY “Impeach Cheney” hats left?….???
CA school districts are allocated funds in a weird way. Walnut School District and the Pomona School District are side by side, both part of CA-42. The first is in a wealthy area and the second is in a poor area. The first has significantly higher test scores by school. The second receives significantly higher funds. Being in a wealthy area is of no funding benefit. Getting more money does not assure higher test scores.
Woohoo! We’re close to $1100 for Shepston. Go firepups! Nate, you’re just in time to put us over the top. And if they’re out of hats, you can have mine :)
Thank you Jane and Howie for your true patriotism.
maher with hagel;
I just donated more than enough at Blue America to get a hat. I also sent the same amount to Rick Noriega, the guy we hope takes out the Box Turtle from here in Texas.
In 1960 the CEO of a large company made 40x the salary of an average worker, now it is 400x, at some point does the greed just get out of hand?
142 Major Danby. Gov. Strickland would not refuse. We were proud to work for him years ago for our Congressman and then Governor, he is brilliant, compassionate and realistic all rolled into one. (an ordained minister and Ph.D in Psych)
He had many Republicans on his bus and I really believe he would be helpful to Ron’s campaign.
perris @ 147
Now the Republics have to slime Hagel.
Ed*ard Teller @ 109
Again, just to increase the odds that you see this: we will be forming position papers on this and other issues and would love the input of knowledgeable people like you. You can write me at greg@ronshepston.com.
Parents are — rightly — fiercely concerned about educational issues. As usual for the GOP, in “NCLB” they came up with a pretty marketing wrapper for a poisonous product. Sometimes I like to say that if there were easy solutions, they would already be in place, but of course for the GOP that is not true. Solving our educational system’s deficits is going to be hard, but the first two tools a representative needs to help do it are good faith and a willingness to listen, and Ron has both.
Oh… Where are my manners… Hello Mr. Shepston from the battleground of the CA-04. You rock! Can’t wait to support your race throughout 08′. Lookin’ forward to meeting you.
…now any Impeach Cheney hats left? :)
Nate @ 144
If they’re out, you can have mine. It was worth it to get her to switch caps.
egregious @ 146
On my way now…
Sorry not to be able to chip in to Ron’s campaign. I am getting my youngest kid through college.
If I come up with any extra dough I many invest it in the company making the “Impeach Cheney” ball caps.
In the event that Mr. Shepston is still there I was wondering if the DCCC is supporting fighting dems as a group this year?
egregious @ 110
We have not lost our collective soul. The soul is there. We just need to let our country once again be as good as it can be at its best.
Ron says he’s going to come back and answer this one too, but right now he’s answering the one about terrorism. This really goes fast!
Nate @ 153
Yes
Nate @ 144
…What’s with the question mark on the hat?
Kathleen @ 156
Your participation in the session is contribution enough; don’t worry about it.
Gnome de Plume @ 116
Here’s an O/T response — as a former associate at a NYC law firm, I heard good things about Mukasey’s integrity. I’ll look forward to people here and elsewhere vetting him more.
How did Bush make the mistake of floating a name that might be confirmable, though? Poor guy has lost a step!
OK, back to the task at hand!
perris @ 147
True, but what Hagel fails to say is that the logic of ‘no new taxes’ and the rest of the GOP memes are inherently illogical. They simply cannot work.
They’re like really, really bizarre, convoluted engineering specs. No sane, clear thinking person would take them seriously if they took at good look at the blueprint.
The only place those GOP memes could ever go was off a cliff — they’re inherently about exacerbating inequalities, corruption, and payola.
I happen to agree with Ron’s viewpoint, that most small biz owners value honorable biz practices. Too bad those folks didn’t recognize the bad specs back in 2000, but ‘lesson learned’ for lots of voters at this point. The key is getting qualified, sane candidates of good humor to step up to the plate.
Thx again to all…
Ron.
Mass transportation in southern California?
Major Danby @ 123
Don’t forget the Korean residents. They may outnumber the Chinese in the district.
Nate @ 155
$40 to add to the (anti)War Chest. And a $2 tip to ActBlue for being providing such a cool service to Democracy.
I will be sure and make it down south to see you speak next year Mr. Shepston and I’ll be sure and support in as many ways as I can in the mean time.
{{{waving at egregious}}} Thanks for the offer of the hat… No worries though. I’m a “shwag” hound though. I love free hats and t-shirts. Practically run for them like a little kid at trade shows. :)
Are there any cities or towns in your district that have passed “living wage” legislation?
Welp, since things are on a high note here, I’m out. Keep up the great work and sprit all and Best of campaigns to you Ron!
bonkers at 107
You’ve brought some big smiles all around here. We’ll focus on winning this and I’ll keep speaking my mind and talking about what’s important.
Combating terrorism: first the easy part. It’s not done by invading countries based on lies. It’s not done by making the whole world angry at not only our government but at American citizens.
I’ve traveled, worked and lived around the world in Europe and Asia and Australia. My wife is Aussie and I know what people from the Pakistani cab drivers and African clerks. They want to look up to America and Americans and respect our government and our values.
I recently went back to a site that had pictures from around the world of the flowers laid at American embassies around the world after 9/11. I cried at what Bush and Republicans have destroyed of the soul of our great country.
The outpourings of sympathy and tears of people of all religions and races showed me that they respected us and appreciated what we gave to the world. We’ve not been perfect but we’ve been damn good.
If we get back to that point and stop acting as if we have some sort of absolute right to take from anyone and everyone regardless of consequences we will go a long way to restoring our respect and our American values.
We have to lead all of our citizens to set the example our values and moral authority have set over the course of our history. These values have been trampled in the name of power and money and that is not who we are.
howieklein @ 161
{{{{Kathleen}}}}
readerOfTeaLeaves @ 163
The whole point was to benefit the wealthy, to grab as much as they could for themselves before voters noticed their real motives and threw them out.
howieklein @ 137
Actually, believe it or not, the DCCC is supportive of our efforts in CA-42. (If they had someone here who could self-fund, that might or might not be so, but as of now they are helpful.) But of course the resources they put in will depend on how much we can bootstrap our way into viability. Gary Miller has given us a leg up, but we understand that this isn’t enough!
Jane has a few choice words for Elizabeth Edwards upstairs on the new thread.
You’re welcome to stay here and talk with Ron and team of course!
Note To Elizabeth Edwards: Lay Off MoveOn
go Go GO… Reader of the Tea leaves @ 139.
You guys have done great, and the tag-teaming worked really well. The last time we had a tag-team at BlueAmerica was when Charlie and Jan Brown were aboard; it’s a good way to handle the answers when they fly fast. We should recommend that campaigns try this every time — if the “second” is web-savvy and in-synch with the candidate, this model works.
I’m curious about campaign plans. It seems that most campaigning in the district is done by hanging signs. Is there more that you plan to do?
Ron and Greg, thanks very much for hanging with us today. I hope you’ll both come back as often as you like. And I look forward to walking some precincts down there. Yours is the closest GOP-held district to where I live.
Badwater @ 145
Are you sure that Pomona schools is in our district? I haven’t ID’d it down to the school district level yet (though I’ve done precincts), but I know that Pomona itself is not. (Anyone from the Claremont colleges who would like to organize in Chino/Chino Hills, though — write me! Wide open opportunities for heavy responsibility!)
Are you against contractors like Blackwater being given guns and patroling New Orleans and Iraq?
Major Danby @ 178
Diamond Bar is in your district. Part of Diamond Bar is in the Walnut School District and part of it is in the Pomona School District.
Sandman @ 149
Yes it does. Unfortunately, we can no longer even see that point in our national rear-view mirror.
bonkers at 140
Well, I gotta tell you that you’re doing the same.
But you know, I can assure you that I will be saying the same things on the floor. There is no magic formula; it’s just common sense with an eye on the Constitution and what’s important to Americans some whom are just trying to get by.
I’m an BSEE by degree Univ Of Illinois 1976 but I’ve made a living designing hardware, designing software, testing and project management. I’ve been around a long time and that played a huge part in my decision to run. I’m still a geek at heart and approach problems with that training as background but circumstances both personal and political drew me to this point. People like you and your comments make me happy that I’m doing this.
Thank you.
Kathleen @ 156
Please see my comment above about volunteering, which thanks to the magic of the Intertubes you can do from anywhere in the country. Of course, if you have a local race that appeals to you, that has to be a high priority, but we would welcome what help people can give in the time they have other than that, and we will try to keep it fun!
(P.S., if you missed it, I’m Ron’s Campaign Manager.)
Ron “I recently went back to a site that had pictures from around the world of the flowers laid at American embassies around the world after 9/11. I cried at what Bush and Republicans have destroyed of the soul of our great country.”
We cry for our nation, and for what the Bush administration and 10 years of sanctions have done to the country of Iraq. They knowingly created an atmosphere where a genocide has taken and continues to take place.
Ron what do you feel about the Bush’s administration successful efforts to undermine the UN and the director of the IAEA, El Baradei?
Norcal @ 157
I don’t know that there’s an official effort of that sort, but they loved that Ron is a 4-year Air Force vet and I imagine that they like to see that sort of background in candidates generally.
Kathleen @ 164
He’s an engineer; he has to look at the plans. But he’s highly concerned with global warming and relieving congestion here, and mass transit is a pretty obvious place to look at solutions. He has no vested interest in doing otherwise, either!
Badwater @ 165
Again, while we’re developing intelligence on all parts of the district, specific info — like what precincts you have in mind — that can speed that process along would always help, and should be e-mailed to me at greg@ronshepston.com. Thanks!
Major Danby @ 183
Will do Major. I’ll lend a hand in the ways I can from here. I’m pretty handy with the intertubes.
Badwater at 176
We definitely plan to do more. There’s a lot to do and hanging signs is not a big part of that. A big part of what we do is meet and talk to people and listening to their concerns.
This allows us to understand what’s important to them and then solve their problems one way or the other.
Speaking to groups is good but I’ve found that just talking to people one on one and not just in my district gives me a lot of insight into understanding them.
Understanding is the first part. The next is getting the message out and we have plans as yet unveiled to do that. We are going to knock their socks off. Stay tuned.
Major Danby @ 183
Will be trying to help Ohio Congressman Zack Space (18th district) who took Ney’s seat. He is “supposedly” number 3 on the Republicans hit list, and comes up again in 2008. If Paul Hackett runs for Senator Voinovich’s seat I will be on his bus big time.
good luck with Ron’s campaign, and I know Strickland will be of help. I will try to contact you with David Willhelms information (he ran Clintons campaign years ago, and was a major player in Stricklands campaign) I am sure he would also be of help.
Kathleen @ 167
Not to my knowledge, but my knowledge certainly has gaps. If anyone knows otherwise, please always feel free to educate me about this or other district developments!
Thanks so much for being here today, everyone.
Great session, huh?
Nate at 166
Thanks, this is how we’re going to make this movement bigger.
twȝk at 168
Thanks for coming by and being part of this.
TeddySanFran @ 175
We had had no intention of doing it this way until Howie suggested it, so if it has been helpful than thanks go to him.
This has been pretty much the fastest two (or two-and-a-half by now) hours of my life! Time does fly when you’re having fun! I can see how it would be impossible for someone to keep up with the flow working solo.
Badwater @ 176
Yes, though I’m hesitant to tip our hands in some areas.
If someone from the Miller campaign is reading this: our main campaign marketing strategy is going to be blimps. Blimps everywhere, every hour of every day! You may want to spend a couple of million dollars countering this, we know. Just a head’s up!
Major Danby @ 187
The northern part of the district, from Diamond Bar and going west, includes many Korean residents. In fact, Diamond Bar High is most likely majority Korean. Miller’s predecessor was the first Korean American elected to congress, Jay Kim. Being a Republic, he was, however, ethically challenged.
Major Danby. I also worked on Congressman Zack Space’s campaign and was paid for some of my time by the DCCC.
One of the things I tried to convince the DCCC to do was employ local unemployed youth unemployed older people in really poor districts in Space’s (18th congressional district), (Glouster, Trimble, Chauncey) to put up signs, knock on doors, etc.
While I know that there is not always enough $$ in the campaign coffers. I think this would be $$ well spent in poorer neighborhoods. Putting some of the campaign money directly into the communities so that they see you are willing to walk the talk and put the money where the problems are NOW.
Ron Shepston @ 182
Mr. Shepston: Many thanks to you and your family for taking this brave step. I will be doing everything I can help you get to DC and restore our Constitution.
Jane Hamsher at 192
Jane, thank you so much for providing this forum and for the fantastic work you and everyone one here at FDL does. You are all incredibly important to what we all are trying to accomplish.
This has been an amazing experience.
Sandman @ 179
Let’s put it this way: Ron is in favor of a full accounting of everything Blackwater has done, everything they have been paid, and of unbiased reporting on what the results of their efforts has been, throughout the Bus years. Once a fair report is done, the answer to this question will probably be obvious; the trick is getting everyone to see the obvious.
Major Danby @ 196
HAHA!
Badwater @ 180
Interesting and good to know. Thanks!
Badwater @ 197
The northern part of the district, from Diamond Bar and going east, includes many Korean residents. In fact, Diamond Bar High is most likely majority Korean. Miller’s predecessor was the first Korean American elected to congress, Jay Kim. Being a Republic, he was, however, ethically challenged.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Miller’s predecessor also the first sitting member of Congress to wear one of those radio signal ankle bracelets so his probabtion officers could keep track of him after he was convicted of very similar crimes to the ones Miller is accused of.
howieklein @ 204
Yes, that’s true. Kim was convicted of campaign finance law violations. I don’t think those are part of Miller’s concerns, are they?
HowieKlein at 177
Howie, thank you for this and for BlueAmerica. It was great talking to you the other day and great to be here.
This has exceeded my expectations; I’m sure we’ll be here again.
Ron Shepston @ 200
I just want to echo that. We’ve been looking forward to this session and thought it would be good, and it’s even better than we could have hoped. Huge thanks to both Howie and Jane for making this event — and this community of minds and spirits — possible! Howie, we will look forward to having you with us in our precincts, and especially to having you with us in our virtual hometown of the blogosphere.
And thanks to everyone for giving us almost a bonus hour’s worth of enjoyment!
Badwater @ 205
The season is young, Badwater. Did I mention that one way people can help from wherever they are is with … research? ;7) Miller knows what his concerns should be; it is for us to find out.
Thanks for putting this together, Howie. I’m here at the Drinking Liberally National Conference in Des Moines and I’m delighted to hear that Ron got a Blue America endorsement. I really want to see good progressives help Ron get the resources he needs to put out his compelling message.
On Calitics, we’ll definitely be watching and reporting on this race. If anyone has anything on Miller for Trash Dirty Gary, too, I have access for that site so let me know, especially if you want to post something on it.
Ron, I think you should speak out about the firing of legal scholar Erwin Chemerinsky to be the Dean of UC Irvine’s new law school, solely because the right started shrieking about his “liberal views.” It’s not quite in your district, but it’s a resonant issue that has a lot of decent people in the OC very angry. The right has gone too far, overplayed their hand, and it would be great for you to join that chorus and challenge Gary Miller to defend it.
Well well, I am mighty late to the party.
But I’m in for a $100 and 10% tip to Act Blue.
Run, Ron, Run!
dday at 209
Good point dday. I saw that the other day on the local blogs but didn’t comment. I will say something about it as a candidate.
ifthethunderdontgetya at 210
Thank you. It was quite a session and a lot of fun. I appreciate your contribution. It’s what it will take to keep the movement on track.
Ron Shepston @ 211
By the way, Major Danby is quite impressive as well. Seems like a quite a team on field!
Ya know….here I am quibbling about language. If you’re ‘donating’ $30, you’re basically buying the hat. It’s better to frame it as ya get this nifty hat with each donation
Wordsmith @ 214
Well, the donation recipient (us) and hat provider (Howie) are not the same entity, and it wasn’t our idea or initiative to provide this extremely cool caps, so I don’t think it’s buying a hat. It’s Howie’s party, and I will just say that the man sure knows how to throw one!
First: thanks, bonkers, I’m glad you enjoyed the session.
dday: we will put putting out press releases regularly as the campaign progresses, but doing so hasn’t been a priority yet, even for utter dunderheadedness such as this decision to pre-fire Chemerinsky. (If there were a coordinated response by local Democratic candidates, we’d be there, of course. In fact, that may be a tack to take.) The only exception we’ve made on a state/local issue so far is Ron’s endorsement of the Courage Campaign, with which you’re involved, because it’s simply so incredibly important.
bonkers @ 213
