I’m not saying Jean Shaheen should not enter the race here, but I think Bowers has a larger (and very good) point:
[T]o be perfectly frank, I feel like Shaheen is one of the many, many Democrats who first helped lead the party into simultaneous minority and pro-war status back in 2002-2003, but who is now capitalizing on the favorable electoral stage that was prepared mainly by the progressive movement during four years of intense guerilla warfare against conservatism from 2003-2006. While the Jean Shaheen’s and Rahm Emanual’s of the party were supporting things like the Bush tax cuts, the pre-emptive invasion of Iraq, and legislation to support Terry Schaivo, it was the netroots who were doing the bulk of the heavy lifting in opposition to Republicans. I feel like they are capitalizing on what we rightfully earned, and both dissing us and preparing to destroy all of our work in the process. They are pretenders to the new Democratic majority.
And right on cue — while everyone was looking at all the medals on Petraeus’s chest, Rahm Emanuel decided that pursuing criminal contempt against Josh Bolten was well, just not that pressing:
House Democratic leaders have decided to postpone a vote on a criminal contempt resolution against White House chief of staff Joshua Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers for several weeks, and possibly longer, according to top lawmakers and aides.
[]
Pelosi decided to delay a vote until at least late September, and possibly into October. Democrats said they are not yet ready for such a vote because they have not briefed lawmakers on what it would mean and how the controversy would play out, both legally and politically.
“I don’t think anything is going to happen on that for a while,” said House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel (Ill.). “When you decide to do that, you have to make your best case. You want everyone to understand what’s happening and why.”
Emanuel said Pelosi and other top Democrats have not begun those consultations yet — and he was unsure when they would.
Rahm supported the war and didn’t want Democrats to talk about it during the last election. He thinks immigration — which desperately needs addressing as a matter of conscience and has the added benefit of splitting the Republican party into little splinters every time it comes up — should not be addressed until a new President’s second term. After the last election people said the thing they care about most is seeing corruption addressed, and as Kagro X noted, Nancy Pelosi said the most important thing about gaining majority status was getting subpoena power. Now Rahm has decided to render that limp and useless as well.
Rahm then has the arrogance to run around and crow about orchestrating the Democratic victory in 06 as if my dog could not have done a better job, considering all the money he dumped into loser races and the way he ignored those that probably could have inched to success had they had just a little bit more help from the DCCC.
I think we’re all a bit tired of cleaning up Rahm’s messes (watch the YouTube above and remember, this is the guy who’s in charge of Democratic messaging for the House). And yes, it is irritating to watch them all ride in and take advantage of a favorable electoral stage that was set in the wake of their open hostility to those who were doing all the heavy lifting to set it.

I love it! Up Barbara Lee! Down Rahm Emmanuel!
Just say NO to Rahm!
!
then primary the motherfucker.
Downstairs knows. (hi pb)
I detest Rahm as well as the DLC.
Oh, and throw in the their consultants who drain the life out of what should be a flowering progressive movement.
er, investigations!?!?
a toothless delaying tactic, to try to appear as if they are doing something.
Rahm is on the same team as Cheney and Lieberman.
Rahm and the DINOs let the criminals skate once more…
Meanwhile, Diane Benson who challenged Don Young’s US House seat last November, is calling a press conference in Anchorage to request the House begin investigating Young’s illegal Coconut road earmark insertion:

Anchorage – Diane Benson, candidate for US Congress, will call for a new investigation into the conduct of Representative Don Young of Alaska. Benson will be available for interviews.
Who’s gonna primary this sucka?
I want to write that person a check
Apropos immigration and other important matters of the day, I found this essay at Open Left very moving.

I did some video work on spec for a primary candidate in Chicago last cycle, and would happily do so again against some of the DLC congresscritters we have foisted on us in IL, including Obama.
With all due respect, Jeanne Shaheen may very likely have already been a Senator from NH if there hadn’t been R skullduggery afoot on election day in ‘02 that helped Sununu get elected.
As it is, a couple of R operatives have gone to prison and the NH R party is paying soemthing like $25K per year to the NH Dem party for the crimes. And there are still outstanding court issues to be resolved about WH particiaption.
So it’s not as if she’s just someone jumping on the main chance band wagon with this run.
!Despida todos las Democratistas Invertebradas!
!Meeeeeeeeeeeeeowwwargh!
so.
It’s time for Rahm,Pelosi, and Reid to go. All they do is huff and puff and stall.
1,598 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Hamsher and the Firepup Patriots:
Thank you again for another great , timely post…this is another example of why you are on the pantheon of role models along with Margaret Sanger and Rosa Luxembourg that I’m tryin’ ta stencil on the foreheads of my two college student daughters.
But, with regard to this topic…I really think a new and very powerful wind is building in this country and the Rahm Emmanuels and Jean Saheens know it and are tryin’ ta get their tattered sails into it. What Rahm doesn’t know , though, is that by makin’ enemies of folks Like Howie Klein and Jane Hamsher, Mr. Emmanuel is soon gunna find himself the A*P*C bagman for a political rock garden. Sail on, Sister Hamsher!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T LET THE BASTARDS UP OFF THE GROUND!!

OT: Matthews is ripping Bush on Hardball right now and his “36″ ridiculous countries in the coalition of the willing.

According to 2008 RaceTracker, nobody yet.
But it sure would be nice to see. But what strong progressive do we know in Chicago who might be interested in seeing Rahm spend more time with his family?
:)
Hey, Siun . . . I know you love Hyde Park, but how about moving a bit north and west?
I.could.just.spit.
Hmmm…remembering back six months or so ago, and whenever myself or others that would say things like, “C’mon! ATTACK! ATTTAACKKK! AATTTAACCKKKK!!!!” there would be a large chorus of, “Just wait. They’re building their cases first, and THEN the Dems will nail the crooks.”
In the spirit of true compromise, I’d always end with an, “OK, I sure hope you’re right. We’ll see…”
Now we see, don’t we? What do we have to show from the last nine months? Lurita Doan? Anyone here still think the crooks will see justice? Abu Gonezales gonna get his, or slither off to corporate welfare? Can I put more question marks in one paragraph?
These baby-killers need to go to jail. They need felony convictions. Their career paths need major roadblocks put in them. Otherwise, they’ll regroup and plan for their next opportunity to shit on the Constitution. Just like they HAVE DONE ALREADY after Watergate and Iran/Contra.
You’d think our D.C. insider Dems would know this by now, or maybe they are part of the game. Forget the 60 votes in the Senate and veto-proof majorities, the real battle is reclaiming the DemocratIC Party and the media, so the electorate won’t fall for the crap again.
Oh, and respectfully, anyone that tells us to be patient and trust the Dem “leaders,” you have no idea what you’re talking about, and I will not listen to you anymore.
bonkers @ 20
You are right.
Rahm is BFF with HRC. They share very similar views.
well, it’s Friday, this is O/T, but if you’d like a little respite from this week’s headlines and cannot wait for Late Nite, here ya go.

A little long, but one of my favorite bits. Can’t help but think of our own Sir Lances A Lot.
OT. (And don’t kill me for the shiny object please): But if you google Condoleezza Rice and Randy Bean – her purported gay lover there is alot of stuff – Bean is not only her co-ouse owner, and her confidant, (we forgive each other over political views) but also what looks like inappropriate stuff. In 1994 Rice as Provost of Stanford admitted someone without credentials into the program at the request of her friend, Bean. Granted, here were probably goodreasons to admit the person, but it also looks a bit suspect. http://news-service.stanford.e…..c4026.html

Of what, the Clenis?
looseheadprop @ 9
Count me in to write that person a check as well. Rahm Emanuel has no business playing king maker and deserves to be canned by his district.
If we can get a good opponent for Rahm I’ll donate. I’m tired of him wanting the credit but not the blame. It makes him look – well, he’s smarter than Bush, but otherwise – yuk!
I want Democrats in Congress who are really Democrats, not DINOs.
Goddam Invertebrate Democrats!!
They are whiny ass titty babies and I’m sick of it. Just keep sucking on that K street teat you dam bastards and see if anyone comes out to support you next year.
Wake the FUCK UP.
Bustednuckles @ 25
Perhaps. But definetly both are corporatists who think that wolves should have a “seat at the table” with the lambs.
you know, it’s a toss up for me; do I like Rahm Emanuel’s wardrobe or Steny Hoyer?
I just can’t decide………………
What would Barbara Lee do?
But Emmanuel is an old, old, slow and sorry aged man. In mind and spirit if not in body. An exhuasted machine party boss who has not noticed his machine is falling apart.
If ordinary people do more for congress what they did last time, these old geezers will not be able to keep up.
Bustednuckles @ 25
Brain Bleach!
gah! I need to read this blog with brakes on or at a lower speed or summat safer…
This is why the Limbaughs of the airwaves can get away with calling the Democrats spineless and have all the fucking yahoos agree with them, nodding their heads in unison, as the Democrats roll over again, this time into doggy position because their backs are starting to hurt in missionary.

Steny Hoyer is really quite known for his exquisite taste in cufflinks……..but there’s no denying Rahm Emanuel is one flashy dresser…………….
such a dilemma……….

and as I epu-ishly commented on the last thread, if Condi is gay she’s a worse hypocrite than mary cheney.
bonkers @ 20 – Do remember in comment threads all over. Patience, building a case, etc. Now it seems like it meant kick-the-can, cover for the cocktail crowd… It’ll take alot of action now and after Bush can’t pardon anyone to convince me these folks can be trusted as an opposition.

kirk murphy @ 19
Game, set, match, Kirk, and we didn’t even get invited to the match, not even to watch.
if rahm et al have their way we’ll remain in the shit swamp we’re in now… dont these people realize how ineffective they’ve been? if not for the netroots the gains made in ‘06 would not have happened… damn – wake up and smell the goddamned coffee!!
I salute John Conyers for his comment, in the linked Politico piece, pointing out that Pelosi & Emanuel & Hoyer & Co. are in the process of turning our House of Representatives into nothing but a “social club” with this latest example of the leadership turning its backs on the Constitutional prerogatives and duties of its branch of government.
That would be a social club with a strict code of omerta about what really goes on behind closed doors. “Open, honest” government, Pelosi? More like a political party in pursuit of power for the same reasons The Mob pursues power, but funded by surplus corporate cash and using the public dime as its bargaining chip.
[And a hat tip to Politico - it sounds like they may have dug this story up, rather than having it served to them, and as a result caught the message machine a little bit off kilter…]
Richmond @ 24
It would be such poetic justice if Condi were outed.
Matthews just ran the bullsh*t life in Baghdad junk from the President.
Bobby Ghosh, former Time Baghdad bureau chief is rebutting it now.
The democratic leadership is worhless on the key issues! I could scream at them for letting the crooks off the hook! Contempt of congress runs deep and they are letting Myers, Bolton androve off scott free. Disgusting!
I would also give money to a good candidate to oppose Rahm. You all know my feelings about the guy.Which of his 2 countries of citizensip is he representing today?
of course Nancy Pelosi has quite tastefully tailored ‘power suits,’ much like Senator Clinton….my lord these progressive visionaries know how to ‘cut a rug’ with their sartorial displays……..

Maybe someone should point out to Nancy and her cohorts that sartorial splendor has not allowed them to dominate the news cycles. Their messages are lost.
The Democratic congressional leadership should be re-titled congressional followship. Do you think Reid, Pelosi, Rahm and Steny have figured out that by allowing Bush to do whatever he wants because, wah, wah, we don’t have the votes has made them just as unpopular as the most despised President in history?
It would be such poetic justice if Codi were outed.
but what would her ‘husband’ say?
Both Republicans and Republicans-Masquerading-As-Democrats need to be targeted in 2008. We can no longer vote Dem just because they have a D after their name. We must get promises from them and hold them to those promises.

we keep having the same ole conversation…is ANYONE listening to us? just wondering out loud…..
All these snakes care about is not rocking the boat. Personal power comes before country, and corporate money is better than any other kind cause it comes with easily followed instructions. To the Dem leadership, nothing could be more threatening than holding some one accountable, cause that might mean that they have to be accountable, too. See, they still think that we don’t have a choice, that we are stuck with them. Nancy and Rahm reek of this attitude. If we want our country back, at least one of these major offenders MUST be turned out of office.
Does Rahm want to be Tony Coelho do you think or does he aim higher, to Tom DeLay status?

I live in his district, its solidly Blue, and he mortifies me constantly. Occasionally he comes up with something brilliant (taking funding for Cheney’s office out of the Executive Branch budget, e.g., since OVP isn’t part of the Executive), but more often he’s so tone-deaf its amazing.

Rahm’s a walking contradiction.
He crows about the 2006 victory he asserts he created, then turns around and helps to prevent that “victory” from accomplishing anything. The latter washes out the former.
And, Rahm, that equals a big ZERO.

While teenagers can be tried as adults in Louisiana for some violent crimes, including attempted murder, aggravated battery is not one of those crimes. Defense lawyers had argued that the aggravated battery case should not have been tried in adult court once the attempted murder charge was reduced.
“The defendant was not tried on an offense which could have subjected him to the jurisdiction of the criminal court,” the three-paragraph ruling said.
The case “remains exclusively in juvenile court,” the Third Circuit ruled.

Here’s the deal. All of the people doing the dirty work for “Somebody” are being blackmailed due to their sexual activities. “Somebody” has put into powerful positions all throughout the government, “blackmailable” individuals. The list is endless.
This is the bottom line. Who is “Somebody”????
IrishJim @ 56
Goddammit! Friday night news cycle. Let’s see how much coverage this gets.
This was a similar case to the one I pointed out upthread – getting pissed that Dems weren’t aggressive as soon as they took over – where when the Larry Gannon/Craigert “crap” happened, I was asking people to stay focused on Abu. The times I tried to point out that Wide Stance Larry was an obvious shiny object, since it came from Roll Call several months after it happened, one day after Abu resigned, and don’t fall for it and stay on Abu’s ass instead, I was met with a resounding, “chill out, Abu’s not leaving for a couple weeks, Abu’s shenanigans will stay in the news, don’t worry.”
Just like, “Give the Dems time, they’re working on it,” now we know that Gannon/Craigert was a planned shiny object.
ATTAACCCKKKKKKK! Why is this so hard to understand?!?
IrishJim @ 22
They work for the same people, and that’s not the American people.

“And that’s just me and my Republican buddies,” Gonzales added wistfully.
D*minatr*x website says:
“Domina Leola McConnell names names and shines the spotlight into some very dark corners concerning the domestic and international political agenda of the neo-conservative movement (toppling the governments of Iraq, Iran, Syria and Venezuela). Neo-con racialist William Bennett told Leola McConnell, how valuable [then] Congressman Gibbons (now governor of Nevada and currently the target of a FBI investigation) was to the next phase of the neo-con strategy of installing certain lesser known, but equally important members of their PNAC movement into important regional positions of political power throughout the United States, particularly in the Western US.”
Galloway commentary: Bush still refuses to admit he was wrong
Fuck every corporation-loving so-called Democrat. If the Rethugs favor the corporations, and the Dems favor the corporations, then there is nobody to represent the ordinary working person. Fuck them *********!
People, it’s time to start reading and re-reading the Declaration of Independence. Just Google it.
We get by with a little help **** from our MODS.
Hello everyone. Greetings Jane. I needed to restore my soul so I cleaned. Amazing what that does for my spirit. Frustration goes up the vacuum cleaner and boy was there a lot of guck.
Too many candidates entered as Democrats in California because it was the only chance they had to get elected. They were and are Republicans only not in registration. I refused to ever vote for Dianne Feinstein for the Board of Supervisors, Mayor of SF, and, Senator. My complaint was always the same – she is a Republican at heart. Still is.
I have no doubt many others did the same thing. Nancy Pelosi was actually a Democrat to the core. As the conservative goal post moved to right wing, I think she really lost her way. Her foundation washed out from under her. She is no Barbara Jordan and doesn’t have that great woman’s firm center. My lament is to hear Barbara Jordan shed her wisdom over the House once again.
We need to support those few voices left like Barbara Lee. How else would they know even those who are not her constituents appreciate and respect her?
This top post and the last one make nice book-ends: Barbara Lee as a model of a Congressperson who gets it right, and Rahm Emanuel as an example of someone on the wrong track. Lee is a wonderful role model to send to our Congress critters, saying “More like this, please!”

David W. Bartoo @ 100
You mean those who won’t pass mustard?
Rahm Emmanuel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rahm_Emanuel
Emanuel was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1959. His father, the Jerusalem-born Benjamin M. Emanuel is a pediatrician, and was a member of the Irgun, a radical Z*onist paramilitary organization in the 1940s
This is why I am voting against Rahm for ‘08 and trying to convince my other Democratic friends in his district. If this means voting Republican, as much as that nauseates me, then so be it. I am also sending money to Cindy Sheehan to help in her quest to unseat Pelosi. Will they succeed? Probably not, but you have to start with the first sweep to clean the house!
peanutbutter @ 47
Pelosi does seem more extremely concerned about her appearance than about the job she does as speaker…no wonder she has a co-speakership with Rahm.
18 benchmarks and two reports spells the beginning of the end to a blank check for war.
So sayeth Emanuel. (Who looks like he could be Billy Joel’s younger brother in this clip.)
The only check that is blank at this time is the check Congress is supposed to be applying to the President.
dakine01 @ 77
Thank you for this info! I’m going to MSNBC to look– This is the first good news I’ve heard all day.
(Appalled a few minutes back to hear Lehrer News Hour’s token “liberal” (sic) Mark Shields crowing that MoveOn’s “tasteless” BetrayUs reference gave Dem’s the chance to “liberate” themselves from the wicked “anti-war base” (some 65% of the public, last I heard.) Sigh!
The Demos and their desire to lose & capitulate. As MLK said, all that’s needed for evil to triumph is for good people to capitulate to it. Do we have more than 2-3 Demos (Feingold, sometimes Dean) who’ll stand up to it?
Yes, I’ve heard Rahm taking credit for the Deomcratic win in 06. I also know what the Dems should do to win the Presidency.
Now, Rahm, exactly WHO was responsible for that win in Nov.?
I don’t think it was you.
Richmond @ 24
Leave Condi alone. As far as I know she’s not a hypocrite who attacks gays in public while practicing in private. There’s plenty to nail her to the wall for without doing stupid things like attacking her personally.
P J Evans @ 27
Donating to a Progressive to beat Rahm might be one of our best investments so far as primary races go.
That’s funny, because I was just thinking that we should liberate *our* party from following the advice of establishment loyalists who enable sociopaths to wage ill-advised wars and indefinite occupations. So, Mark, anyone you know die in Iraq, or should Democrats just shut the fuck up and “support the troops!1!!” like you do, by giving Bush a blank check to keep them in Iraq forever?
Fuckhead.
(hmm, I thought I used my quote of f-bombs in the previous post…)

Me Too!!!!!!
MarkH @ 126
Yes, I agree. However, if Condi does attack gays in public, may we agree to jump down her throat with our boots on?
It makes me sick! Remember after the election, Rham was addressing the media about the Dems taking over the house. He looked like he hadn’t slept all night, and the media was treating him like a Karl Rove genius, and Rham played it for all it was worth. NOT ONCE, did Rham mention Howard Dean!! The media never brought it up either, about all the fights Rham and Howard had, how Rham called up Howard to Capitol Hill in order to intimidate Howard into giving him DNC money! TAhe media never mentioned Rham’s critizism of Howard, that he was wasting the DNC money on a 50 state pipe dream. Boy, these corprorate Democrat opportunist make me sick!!!
