RonD, that’s so cool! He knew you loved the guitar and him. He just wanted to make sure you loved him more…
Years ago, before I came to Alaska, I had a lab runt who loved Schubert. Not any music, just Franz Schubert. I was playing a lot of piano music then. His favorite was the little A Major Sonata, Op. 120. He would erupt into musical howls at exactly the same places in the piece whenever I played it. He was also good for winning bets – I trained him to go up on the roof of the house.

China frees New York Times reporter (Reuters)
from Yahoo! News
Zhao Yan (C), a Chinese journalist jailed while working for the New York Times, is escorted by relatives after he was released from the state security prison in Beijing September 15, 2007. Zhao, who reported on citizens’ rights and official abuses, was given three years’ jail for fraud in August 2006 — a charge he denied. Zhao was detained in 2004 on accusations that included leaking state secrets after the Times reported that former president Jiang Zemin was likely to give up his post as chairman of the Central Military Commission, which he did shortly afterwards.

That’s good, right?
It’s good, ’cause the woman I was working for is a Total Wack Job.
The girls in accounting call her Chicken Little, ’cause according to her The sky is always, well, you know.
The bestest comment about her was someone said she always answers the phone like she just saved ten children from a burning building.

The agency told me that “it wasn’t a good fit.”
Good?
You tell me.
(but, I gotta say, my widdle feelings are Still Hurt. GD!)

We have a Shop here of which I can’t belong. I think that I just shouldn’t ever show at work how I feel politically — does that make sense? And I work in a VERY liberal place.

Well of course your widdle feelings are hurt! But fu*k that beeyotch. Had one like her once. Took her toothbrush out of her desk one day when she left early. Went to the lady’s room and dunked it in the toilet, then ran it around the underside of the rim abd put it back in her desk. Brought me pleasure every day after lunch from then on out to see her walking down the hall with it. Was really tickled when she was caught embezzling, too.

Austin City Limits Festival happening here this weekend. Right by my house. I got to be in the traffic snarl just as it was ending and I was coming home from another event. There is this one really cool transportation option for festivals here: “taxis” that are bicycyles with a passenger cart behind that can take a few people. It’s very cool.

#2 guy in the company.
He’s been flipping out all week. Something to do with his wife….bank accounts frozen. He hasn’t eaten for a week, told me he wished he had the guts to kill himself. This afternoon he was puking his guts out in the bathroom.
Served in 3 wars.
Bomber pilot in Viet Nam. Over 300 missions. Refused to drop napalm.
That Guy.
But, I had to overhear a lot of creepy phone calls all week. And feel terribly sorry for him, ’cause he really seems to be a nice person.

Maybe you could stay in touch with him even if you’re not working there, just to help him get through the rough place in the road, if you can. It seems like he trusts you.
I lurk at my lunch hour, but don’t ever participate– I just get the feeling that I shouldn’t. I wait until Late Nite at home.
I often work from home and dip my feet in. At work depends on the task at hand.
During my work hours, the most I can hope for is a drive-by without benefit of having read the comments, so if I comment, I risk being out of order, or asking a question that’s already been answered. And then I can’t stick around to look for responses.
Christy usually front-loads the day with great posts before sunrise here in Hawaii, so that by the time I read them, the herd has already moved on to a new top post before I’ve had time to engage. That’s what’s really frustrating for me.

Well, I did e-mail him telling him that it’s not courage that moves a person to suicide, that I thought it was cowardice. I said, “And, sir, you are no coward. The situation sucks, not you.”
Hey Suz — is this about the protest tomorrow in DC?
Yes, Christine, about the protest tomorrow.
Eh, could be, but I don’t think it’s highly likely. The DC police are pretty experienced at handling protests, and while they occasionally do some idiotic things with small protest groups, they’re generally quite restrained with large protests.

TexTeen will be at the festival Sunday with dad.
I’ll be gone to a workshop from 9:30 – 9:00 or so. If they might want to park in my carport, email or call me. It’s walking distance. I’ll probably stop back home for a bit around 5:30pm and then leave again, but i could park behind them while I’m there.

Redshift, my point wasn’t that I thought the DC police would mace or teargas – it was the community of FDL coming together in support of those who are going, even the firepups who sported a badge.
Redshift, do you remember the former DC police chief Ramsey getting in there with the crowds back in ‘99 or so with the anti-globalization protests? He was cuffin’ and stuffin’ em.
I went to google images, typed in Pentagon Cake and it was the 7th hit. It is the biggest cake I have ever seen–with Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld and Cheney. The cake was so long you couldn’t see the end of it. Oh, well…sorry I got your mouth watering for nothing.

Just this year our Gov just got that law repealed. So we all know that there is no way that 95% of under poverty kids are enrolled which means any of the up to 250% kids will get kicked off the program.
Gov Janet was the first to call Bush on the carpet about that rule. And it really screws up one of the ballot measures to increase it to voer 300% of poverty.
JEP
I saved your words.
And, wow, I just gave up a little suggestion this am, and, like, you DID IT?
Now, what else should I suggest JEP accomplish?
World Peace and a Lexus?
G’night JEP.
On Sept. 21 sunset will be more or less the same throughout the world. Our days are getting shorter by 6 minutes a day, so we have a little less than 13 hours of sunlight now.
An internal Justice audit, released Friday, showed the department spent nearly $7 million to plan, host or send employees to 10 conferences over the last two years. This included paying $4 per meatball at one lavish dinner and spreading an average of $25 worth of snacks around to each participant at a movie-themed party.
There was plenty, too, for those needing to satisfy a sweet tooth.
More than $13,000 was spent on cookies and brownies for 1,542 people who attended a four-day “Weed and Seed” conference in August 2005, according to the audit by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine. And a “networking” session replete with butterfly shrimp, coconut lobster skewers and Swedish meatballs at a Community Oriented Policing Services conference in July 2006 cost more than $60,000.
Things may be coming to a head up in Alaska soon for Ted Stevens and his son Ben. Bill Allen, the convicted CEO of VECO oli services company, admitted today, in sworn court testimony that he bribed Sen. Stevens by providing months of free skilled labor by his employees, and materials for the remodeling and enlargement of Stevens’s Girdwood home. Yesteday, Allen testified that one of the things he confessed to in his Federal plea bargain was to bribing Stevens’s son Ben, former President of the Alaska State Senate, hundreds of thousands of dollars.

And (whispering) that CHMoore link to Jimmy Smith above is my husband, the Mr. Moore. I was reading all the kind comments y’all were sending me and he brought his laptop out and has been lurking.
I been talking about all my pup friends for a long time.
Guess he wanted to see what I was talkin’ about.
I saw a report on CNN just before leaving for work about the WIC program being reduced by some $145 million. The story itself was about the possible addition of produce to the list of items to be purchased with the voucher. We can prolong this fucking ‘war’ but can’t provide poor women and infants/young children with milk/formula, cheese, cereal, juice.
You’re kidding me?
This could lead to riots. I’m really serious. There are huge numbers of women who rely on this. Even more now, with crappy jobs and high gas prices.
Strike the match, mf-ers.
No. My daughter got WIC for a couple of months when my granddaughter was tiny 2-3 months when her husband was laid off for 6 weeks. Until she mentioned it to me and we all instituted our own ‘program.’ That’s all we needed to head to Costco. :)
G’night TexasBetsy.

Yes, I did forget about the baseball game. Will someone refresh my recollection. I remember the Yankees had won the last three games against the Sox. But how did tonight’s game turn out?

Good! Stevens makes me mad for his work against an open internet.
No way could I have a big shabbat meal after all the other big meals I’ve had in the last 2 days. We had a very small meal tonight.
Did you light candles and do the blessings?
Bob in HI
My son had moved back home with me, and he has become very religious. So we went to Chabad services the last two days, and (as usual) we lit candles and said blessings on wine and bread. Bread which we baked.
The Orthodox Jewish experience of my youth came back to me sort of like riding a bicycle. But some things were new to me.
Wordsmith,
Bless you.
I remember our younger son getting a very expensive formula from WIC that we otherwise simply could not have afforded, and he couldn’t keep the other ones down.
Yes, I did forget about the baseball game. Will someone refresh my recollection. I remember the Yankees had won the last three games against the Sox. But how did tonight’s game turn out?
:P!!! Still 4 1/2 ahead, and, the best record in the Bigs…!!!
I wanted to tell you I had a dog, just like yours except instead of Shubert, he loved Joan Baez. Dimonds to Rust. And would sing along beautifully.
Better than I could, all “Sing along with Mitch” jokes notwithstanding.
somehow an anole once got into my massage room and hung around with all the plants. he’d sometimes come out and bob his head when i’d put on the music for the massage.

I worked on an organic farm last summer and something like 90% of the produce is sold via WIC in the DC area.

Hiya tw3k, Mitch, musical dog lovers!
Back from canning pickled beets and dinner with the family. They’re down watching “Who Killed the Electric Car” right now. I watched it last night. Before that, we were watching funny videos like Britney Spears’ latest music vid, and the Miss South Carolina geo quiz one.
The official story on Iraq has never made sense. The connection that the Bush administration has tried to draw between Iraq and al-Qaida has always seemed contrived and artificial. In fact, it was hard to believe that smart people in the Bush administration would start a major war based on such flimsy evidence.
The pieces just didn’t fit. Something else had to be going on; something was missing.
In recent days, those missing pieces have finally begun to fall into place. As it turns out, this is not really about Iraq. It is not about weapons of mass destruction, or terrorism, or Saddam, or U.N. resolutions.
This war, should it come, is intended to mark the official emergence of the United States as a full-fledged global empire, seizing sole responsibility and authority as planetary policeman. It would be the culmination of a plan 10 years or more in the making, carried out by those who believe the United States must seize the opportunity for global domination, even if it means becoming the “American imperialists” that our enemies always claimed we were.
Once that is understood, other mysteries solve themselves. For example, why does the administration seem unconcerned about an exit strategy from Iraq once Saddam is toppled?
Because we won’t be leaving. Having conquered Iraq, the United States will create permanent military bases in that country from which to dominate the Middle East, including neighboring Iran.
Don’t know about everyone else, but I’m not shocked. As the neocon agenda is so proudly stated at PNAC, create a unipolar world with Anerican predominance by way of fighting wars in multiple theaters.
It’s only 8:30 here, and I’ve got one eye on the TV watching our U. of HI women’s vollebyall team, which is nationally ranked.

Ooh, who’re they playing?
Idaho. Our wahine breezed through the first two games, but relaxed a bit during the third game, allowing Idaho more than 24 points. Bigger game tomorrow against Boise State, I think.

note to TRex: i don’t know if you’ve ever featured Sarah Vaughan. if not, i think her version of Misty on Youtube would be a great one, or My Funny Valentine …
gotta run to work for a bit. catch ya on the flip side.
BTW, if I were Ted Stevens I would be shitting pickles about now. I hope he voted to improve conditions in prisons, for his sake.
It’s nice to tangentially share in the joy of you Alaskans as the endearing Ted Stevens is unmasked. As time goes by, perhaps we in the other states can also enjoy such a pleasure ourselves
It may make a lot of people uncomfortable and appear as religious fundamentalism/extremism. These are not entirely false accusations. But it has one distinguishing feature as compared to some other brands of extremism and fundamentalism: it doesn’t seek to impose itself on others.

Greenwarrior,
I love your thoughts above about Guardian Angels. I’ve got a hot bath awaiting and I’m going to go reflect on that.
(y’all can talk to CHMoore if ya want. He’s a really nice, smart musician guy, btw.)

He shoulda put one up here when he had clout. Perfect justice for St. Ted would be to have to clean the empty spot at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport where his nameplate used to be. again and again…

Agreed. I was referring more to some of their customs in bentsching and in excluding certain prayers, etc. Melodies are quite different. Also, take a look at a chabad haggadah sometime. Half the songs at the end are missing.

As a total outsider, I think the best thing Chabad Lubevitch communities do is seek to find and help Jews who are alone in cities, towns and villages where they have no contact with their faith or heritage.

Here they set up the first kosher butcher shop and started the first Jewish school. That’s a lot.
To me the news about Ted STevens is most significant because of what it means for the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
As much of an asshole as he is on a personal level(and his son is a bigger one) he’s fairly liberal as Republicans go. And when he brings home pork, he brings it to my state.
just a drive-by observation: this morning I stepped away from the computer, only to return briefly at midnight, NINE posts later. that’s some serious quantity and quality at FDL…

Well, the farm is more the exception rather than the rule. The owner of the farm also does a sorta co-op thing with a few other farmers in the area to round out the selection of produce. Really good food at a great price and accessible to WIC. It’s a win for everyone but I think the owner is retiring this year.

I expect he’ll make an announcement about his upcoming retirement in January 2009 by the end of next week. I disagree on the pork. We have no way of knowing whether a Sen. Jay Hammond or Av Gross or Wally Hickel might have brought more pork to the north country than Stevens or less. But ANY other US Senator would have raped the fishing industry in our small coastal communities far less than he has.

We’re ranked #15, but at the beginning of the season we ranked higher. We started out by losing two games in our own tournament! But they’re starting to pull it together.
I understand what you said about Chabad. An example is that they are against repeating phrases in prayers when they are sung, which kind of messes me up. Think, for example, of Lecha Dodi.
But they are also frequently talking about Meshiach, and Kabbalah, which are things we never spoke of in my youth. And then there is the whole Rebbe thing. (Shneerson.) Since my name is Menachem Mendel, they all think I am a holy man. That sort of thing.
Today, for the first time in my life, I prostrated myself, forehead to the floor, in the position that we see Arabs praying in. It was definitely different.
On the other hand the Rabbi spontaneously broke into dance during the services today. In the Orthodox synagogue of my youth, R.H. was pretty somber.
Nope. But I dated a Jewish lady for a few years about 10 years ago. She did shabbat, and took me to synagogue a few times. She also invited me to some Torah studies. Her orientation was somewhat like Jewish Renewal but not quite. I think she liked Rabbi Zalman Schechter– but then, so did my Mother (who is not Jewish)!

Other than the last, my observations are roughly the same. I also prostrated myself. Third year I think. Very odd feeling.
My orthodox congregation also avoids repeating lines. I had been used to never repeating lines with God’s names, but they avoid ALL repetitions that aren’t dictated by the Artscroll.

when one the tv guys comments that no one has left the stadium yet, like he was astonished(??).
the next thing i saw was back-to-back home runs, as 7 yankees make the bases while six score,
ny8 to bos7
and NO outs.

yeah, i’d like to work for a share (or just volunteer) one summer… just for the experience and to learn from them. they’ve been organic farming for 20 years and are very involved in NOFA (northeast organic farming association).

it was amazing.
reminded me of a henrietta tropical depression which became a hurricane over night.

and who says money can’t buy a world series, at least, once in a while?
I first interviewed Stevens on local fisheries issues for KLAM Radio in Cordova in the fall of 1973. The CDFU (Cordova District Fisheries Union) issued a statement at that time on his positions pushing for regulatory bodies on offshore fisheries, which pretty much predicted how the North Pacific Fisheries Council would benefit a few Seattle-based multinational companies at the expense of small Alaska communities. I wish I still had the statement. Next time I’m in Cordova, I’ll check at CDFU and see if they still have that and some of their subsequent criticisms of his stances on that paradigm, which is his worst legacy by far.
Also a great venue for people who’ve never seen a rural environment.

i’ve never had such great veggies since i started buying a share from the farm. today (yesterday now), i got extra tomatoes. i’m going to make sauce and freeze it for winter use. if it works out, i’ll do more next week.
Well this conversation may be a little to, how shall I put it? Parochial.
no… i like reading about what’s important to you. and interesting to learn about new things.
Well, here’s a short course. Over the years, Judaism had become overly legalistic, and Jewish communities had suffered greatly at the hands of enemies and due to following false messiahs so that by the end of the 18th century, it had stopped being relevant to the “man in the street.” Along came a man who came to be known as the Baal Shem Tov (the master of the good name) or the Besht, for short. He had the insight that service to God should be joyous, and he made it so. His followers are called Chasidic, and when you see them today, they are characteristed by black coats and long beards, big broad-brimmed hats, etc. Within the Chasidic movement there arose a branch that emphasized the intellectual content of the religion. These are the people we were talking about, Chabad. These people run out-reach programs that are incredible. My son’s mother, my first wife, is going to a Passover celebration next spring in Tajikistan at the local Chabad house.

I’m going to have to figure out how to do that. I have iTunes but no iPod. iThink I can do it, though.
in itunes…
- click on the “itunes store” symbol (left column)
- in the “search itunes store”, enter “pbs now”
- click on the free subscribe button (it should be at the top)
- click on the “podcast” symbol (left column)
- it should be there… you can download old shows by clicking on the “get” buttons. so long as you are subscribed, new shows will automatically download as they become available.
it will play just like a music file.
if that works for you and you like it, you might also consider these podcasts:
bill moyers journal
democracy now!
there are a ton of podcasts available… from university classes to cory doctorow reading his scifi writings. i love it.
Further on Chabad — these people (Hell, I guess I am one of them) talk a lot about the messianic age, and the coming of the messiah. Personally, I have some discomfort with that. It is too literal, but the rabbis are very very smart, and it someone were inclined to confuse fundamentalism with ignorance, these guys could quickly disabuse them of the notion. Also, they had a great teacher, whose name is vaguely like my own. They call him “The Rebbe.” The veneration that is accorded to him, is also something that doesn’t appeal to me. Some people, — not anyone I have ever met — actually believe he is or was the messiah. He died about 18 years ago.
To give an example of the veneration with which they regard this man, they have given me small honors, (more than I deserve) just based on the similarity of our names. All of the Rabbis have children named after him, and pictures of him in their homes.

Apparently, ABC News had been told as long ago as 2002 that their Mid East expert had a phony resume, but they kept using him until recently. Laura Rozen is the blogger/reporter who is finally bringing the whole sordid affair to light, and she’s asking even more imporant questions in the aftemath.

Interesting, I know almost nothing about Judaism except for the little I’ve picked up from Leonard Baskin
Every Jewish child knows the story involving the two greatest scholars of the biblical age. (There are many stories involving these two, and Shamai is always the foil to Rabbi Hillel.) In this one a gentile comes to R. Shamai and asks him to teach him the entire body of Jewish knowledge “while he stands on one foot.” Rabbi Shamai became angry and chased the man away, saying “I have studied all my life, and I don’t know the entire Torah.” So the man went to Hillel, with the same request. As any Jewish schoolboy or girl will tell you the great Rabbi Hillel said: “That which is spiteful to you, you should not do to anyone else. All the rest is commentary. Now go and study.”
So, now TW3K, you know all you need to know. Now go and study. :-)
“This story has been removed from our Web site because of questions raised about the credibility of one of its authors, Alexis Debat.”
I only heard about it today on AirAmerica for a few minutes. What questions is she asking? And aren’t ABC’s creds just about shot now?
Debat is a total fake and fabricater. Trying to start a war with Iran all by hisself!

NJ’s Corzine to Defy New Health Care Rules
from t r u t h o u t
Christopher Lee reports for The Washington Post, “Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine informed President Bush this week that New Jersey will not obey federal rules that would make it harder to enroll middle-income kids for a popular government-subsidized health insurance program.”
(And good night to the sleepy ones.)
Best of everything, demi.

That makes sense if I don’t stop to think about it!
Later, Loo Hoo,
Thanks for the positive thoughts.
TexBetsy @ 241
can always count on you!
Ya that new rule will hit AZ hard. The fine family values GOP here had put a gag rule on the schools which prevented the schools from informing families about the SCHIP program if they qualified when they applied for the lunch programs.

Big Mitch, it was nice except for having a sick teen at home, which limited my visiting of friends a bit.

I been talking about all my pup friends for a long time.
Guess he wanted to see what I was talkin’ about.
Margot @ 204
No. My daughter got WIC for a couple of months when my granddaughter was tiny 2-3 months when her husband was laid off for 6 weeks. Until she mentioned it to me and we all instituted our own ‘program.’ That’s all we needed to head to Costco. :)

My son had moved back home with me, and he has become very religious. So we went to Chabad services the last two days, and (as usual) we lit candles and said blessings on wine and bread. Bread which we baked.
The Orthodox Jewish experience of my youth came back to me sort of like riding a bicycle. But some things were new to me.
bobschacht @ 297
thank you, it’s appropriately bookmarked now

It’s nice to tangentially share in the joy of you Alaskans as the endearing Ted Stevens is unmasked. As time goes by, perhaps we in the other states can also enjoy such a pleasure ourselves
TexBetsy @ 306
It may make a lot of people uncomfortable and appear as religious fundamentalism/extremism. These are not entirely false accusations. But it has one distinguishing feature as compared to some other brands of extremism and fundamentalism: it doesn’t seek to impose itself on others.
twȝk @ 306
Wonderful! I didn’t realize that organic food was available via WIC.

He shoulda put one up here when he had clout. Perfect justice for St. Ted would be to have to clean the empty spot at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport where his nameplate used to be. again and again…
BigMitch @ 315
Agreed. I was referring more to some of their customs in bentsching and in excluding certain prayers, etc. Melodies are quite different. Also, take a look at a chabad haggadah sometime. Half the songs at the end are missing.
Where did you grow up Mitch?

Happy to help out. Beautiful!
Ed*ard Teller @ 323
Here they set up the first kosher butcher shop and started the first Jewish school. That’s a lot.
To me the news about Ted STevens is most significant because of what it means for the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
As much of an asshole as he is on a personal level(and his son is a bigger one) he’s fairly liberal as Republicans go. And when he brings home pork, he brings it to my state.
just a drive-by observation: this morning I stepped away from the computer, only to return briefly at midnight, NINE posts later. that’s some serious quantity and quality at FDL…
TexBetsy @ 318
Well, the farm is more the exception rather than the rule. The owner of the farm also does a sorta co-op thing with a few other farmers in the area to round out the selection of produce. Really good food at a great price and accessible to WIC. It’s a win for everyone but I think the owner is retiring this year.
Bon nuit Punaise.

BigMitch @ 329
I expect he’ll make an announcement about his upcoming retirement in January 2009 by the end of next week. I disagree on the pork. We have no way of knowing whether a Sen. Jay Hammond or Av Gross or Wally Hickel might have brought more pork to the north country than Stevens or less. But ANY other US Senator would have raped the fishing industry in our small coastal communities far less than he has.
punaise @ 329
lol, good nap?

at the farm where i get my veggies (small, local and organic), you can etiher buy a share or work for one (a few hours a week). the family doesn’t want anyone to go without if there’s no money for it. they also do some part time employment of a small group of men at a half-way house (transitioning from prison). lots of good stuff going on there.

I grew up in NYC.
Sweet dreams, Betsy!
TexBetsy @ 325
Nope. But I dated a Jewish lady for a few years about 10 years ago. She did shabbat, and took me to synagogue a few times. She also invited me to some Torah studies. Her orientation was somewhat like Jewish Renewal but not quite. I think she liked Rabbi Zalman Schechter– but then, so did my Mother (who is not Jewish)!

punaise@338
fourteen comments on a thread now are those rushing for the zed. Serious commentary starts at about #30 or so…
BigMitch @ 345
Other than the last, my observations are roughly the same. I also prostrated myself. Third year I think. Very odd feeling.
My orthodox congregation also avoids repeating lines. I had been used to never repeating lines with God’s names, but they avoid ALL repetitions that aren’t dictated by the Artscroll.

Hey, a little respect, it was Okajima and Papelbon, the two best relief pitchers this year…!!! Aargh!!!
BigMitch @ #366,
I first interviewed Stevens on local fisheries issues for KLAM Radio in Cordova in the fall of 1973. Next time I’m in Cordova, I’ll check at CDFU and see if they still have that and some of their subsequent criticisms of his stances on that paradigm, which is his worst legacy by far.

selise @ 377
My son’s mother, my first wife, is going to a Passover celebration next spring in Tajikistan at the local Chabad house.
wangdangdoodle @ 386

Did you see Jon Stewart last night? He had a clip of Lieberman advocating for war vs. Iran during his questioning of General Patraeus. Then he did a “Danny Thomas Spit Take” with a bottle of Manishevitz wine, and I laughed my ass off.
