I am pleased to announce that former Senator and Presidential candidate Gary Hart will be here at FDL to chat with us on September 20th at noon ET/9:00 am PT.
Sen. Hart teaches at the University of Colorado at Denver, and also has co-chaired the U.S. Commission on National Security for the 21st Century and participates as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Prior to that, he was a United States Senator for the state of Colorado from 1975 to 1987.
Impressive background, sure. But his latest two books — The Courage Of Our Convictions: A Manifesto For Democrats and The Shield And The Cloak: Security Of The Commons — ask some essential questions about where we are going and who we ought to be as we move the Democratic party and the nation forward.
I wanted to share an excerpt from the introduction of Courage of Our Convictions, because it sums up a lot of the lingering hope and concomitant discontent that so many of us have been feeling:
What has happened? Why do people in small towns, in large cities and on college campuses ask, “What do the Democrats stand for? Why are the party leaders so quiet?” These questions have become more frequent and more intense as the war in Iraq drags on…with no resolution in sight and no definition by President George Bush of the “course” we are to “stay.” Yet Democratic leaders, including most of those preparing to seek the Presidency in 2008, and especially those who voted for the war resolution in October 2002, find protection in anonymity and silence.
What do we stand for indeed? It has become painfully apparent that the great Democratic Party, the dominant party of the twentieth century, the party that led America through two world wars and the Cold War, has become mute. The best Democrats lack all conviciton, and the worst conservatives, those full of passionate intensity, fill the vacuum in governance….
The base of Democratic conviction must be the foundation for the courageous promotion of renewed internationalism founded on new international institutions and alliances, the restoration of principles of equality and social justice at home, and the reminder essential to all republics that we must earn our rights by performance of our duties.
It is our duty to our nation to prove that the best have not lost all conviction.
Our duty, indeed. Sen. Hart’s work on national security matters stands as a testament to this performance of that duty — this chat with the folks at Buzzflash from 2003 shows his commitment to working on these issues in the nation’s best interest. As for the foundation principles of the modern Democratic party, I thought we might start that conversation today. The Democratic party is a very large tent — from the Out Of Iraq caucus to the Blue Dogs to everything in between. Not exactly the lock-step, top-down GOP, is it?
It isn’t easy, but finding issues on which we can all unite is essential.
I hope that you will be able to join us for what promises to be a spirited, in-depth live discussion about the way forward for our nation, our national security and the Democratic party. And I’m certain we can work the current crop of 2008 hopefuls into the discussion as well.

Probably won’t make the Hart blog but hope someone will ask him what he would have asked or told Petraeus and Crocker if he had still been in the Senate.
And Good Morning To everyone!!
Great that you were able to get Senator Hart to join the Lake! I don’t agree with him that Democrats should focus on “renewed internationalism”, but boy is he ever right with the key issue being “What do the Democrats stand for? Why are the party leaders so quiet?” It’s going to lose the Presidency and maybe the Senate for the Democrats in 2008 if they don’t come up with something positive to run on PDQ.
I agree our leadership has become mute – but I attribute it to being muzzled by the mighty Republican Wurlitzer (have to go along with Hillary on this Right Wing Conspiracy). The Repubs just play the game better.
I find it all scary. I went to the local Drinking Liberally last week and it is being spearheaded by the Young Dems of the county. It is a “trending blue” county that has been red for a long time. These young guys were preaching moderation which made my head hurt. If that’s what the PA Dems are about and that’s what they are spoon feeding their young, we really are in trouble. And one of them teaches govt. at a local high school.
Not sure whether or not I want to take up the challenge to free them from moderation. We’ll see if I have the time and energy and if they are willing or able to realize that moderation will kill us like it’s killing so many fine servicemen and women and so many more Iraqis.
I didn’t see it – but didn’t Obama make a speech yesterday telling GWB that he does *not* have Congress’s permission to bomb Iraq?
Seems to me that’s an issue where the entire Party could (and should) dig in its heels, no equivocating, no exceptions, just a flat-out balls-to-the-wall united front.
It’s a political winner, imho. If the R’s want to quibble over who can make Gitmo the biggest, who can tell the scariest terrorist stories, etc., let the Dem’s compete as to who can sell the harshest consequences for GWB should he go Dr. Strangelove on us. Impeachment? Immediately.

EPU’ed from previous thread:
This is truly “special” – after everything we have heard this past week!
WASHINGTON, Sep 12 (IPS) – In sharp contrast to the lionisation of Gen. David Petraeus by members of the U.S. Congress during his testimony this week, Petraeus’s superior, Admiral William Fallon, chief of the Central Command (CENTCOM), derided Petraeus as a sycophant during their first meeting in Baghdad last March, according to Pentagon sources familiar with reports of the meeting.
Fallon told Petraeus that he considered him to be “an ass-kissing little chickenshit” and added, “I hate people like that”, the sources say.
The whole story at:

I heart Gary Hart.

RevDeb @ 9
Very similar here. I don’t know if the area would actually go majority Democratic, but there are a lot of Republicans who are feeling antsy about the party, for all the obvious reasons — the war in Iraq which keeps dragging on with no end in sight, corruption and sex scandals, costs for everyday things going up, a feeling that Washington isn’t listening, etc. They would like to hear what the Democrats are proposing, but they just hear silence on the issues along with begging for campaign money. So they disconsolately stick with the Republican, at least it’s the devil they know.
ANYONE NOTICE THE CBS BS ABOUT IRANIAN-MADE ROCKETS HITTING THE GREEN ZONE?
I don’t doubt that it was an Iranian rocket, I don’t doubt the terorists used it to bomb the Green Zone. I do doubt that the entire population of Iran should be held accountable, with these blanket accusations that cover a lot of innocent people.
Here’s how it was posed;
“a type of weapon provided to Shiite extremists by Iran, a U.S. general said Thursday.”
Here was my response…
When some sleazy American weapons dealer sells a rocket to some third-world despot, we don’t say “America provided the weapon” even if it was made here.
So how can you be so glib with your accusations, do you REALLY KNOW if “Iran” (The whole nation?) provided those rockets, it could have been a sleazy Iranian arms dealer, not “IRAN” per se.
This is just more fear-mongering. Weigh your words, or you will once again be culpable in creating an unnecessary and deadly war.
Peace is the only goal, and the impact and intent of every choice you all make with your words will be judged against that standard.”
That comment was intended for every MSM journalist who still has a soul.
I have a fine tradition of sending money during a primary to the person who ends up not getting the nomination. The first recipient of the Twenty Dollar Check of Doom was Gary Hart. I still think he’d have done better than Mondale in 84.
If moderation is the common ground, for Democrats and Republicans, to agree on the equal application of Justice for all, then I’m all for it…
…but my heart is with RevDeb’s.
Sing out! For, lo, the skulls of the Goopers be thicke…
“the challenge to free them from moderation.”
Great perspective, I feel the same way too, but
hey, here in Kansas, moderation is revolutionary.
slightly OT, but referenced in the same comment, early childhood education IS the key, to so many of our woes. Early childhood exposure to cultural and racial diversity would also help.

Christy, having spent 22 years in the U.S Navy (now retired), it seems to me that there is much more division within the senior leaders on the way forward than most people realize.
I was really surprised that Fallon was selected to be CENTCOM but that just tells me that there are real differences of opinions within the Military Services and it is beginning to surface outside the walls of the Pentagon.
You can expect to see more of this unless there are radical changes regarding the military role in Iraq.

There’s an example of a good Democratic issue that would really resonate with people. How about someone saying they’ll provide vouchers for free day care for any family making under, say, $30,000, along with universal health care for children up to the age of 12? To be paid for by rolling back Bush’s tax cuts for the rich. That’s the kind of thing people would expect to hear from a Democrat. But no, all we get is lectures about how in Washington you need to wait years to take baby steps that require huge campaign organizations … at which point everyone’s eyes have glazed over.
cleter @ 17
Send your next one to Clinton! :-)

Calling Matt Bai, I believe you were asking about ideas from the Democratic party?
RevDeb @ 9
I wonder if “moderate Democrats” think because the GOP is so far to the right (like, they’re falling off the edge of the earth), being “moderate” makes them “lefty”? Maybe they don’t realize that being moderate actually puts them to the right hand side of Democrats.

One-on-one, Mike Huckabee is the GOP’s strongest candidate, but will that be enough to propel him to the
top tier?
The latter book mentioned in the post sounds interesting; I’ll have to take a look at it.
OT: Just got an email that Edwards has bought time on MSNBC to rebut Bush’s speech immediately afterwards. I guess we’ll have to put Shrub on mute so we can be sure to catch the start of it.
Redshift @ 35
Heh. I plan to catch a youtube of it afterwards, hopefully with a transcript…
Redshift @ 35
The thing about MSNBC is that not enough people will see it. I wish he’d put it on the big three, or at least one of the big three.
Oddly enough I would say Huckabee has the same problem Edwards does: the media doesn’t pay attention to him…
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 37
I’m guessing the big 3 want to get back to their big money-making reality crap.
peanutbutter @ 28
Maybe I’ll ask Sen. Hart for the doomed 20 back, just to make sure Hillary gets 20 actually Doomed dollars. I’m kind of worried about Edwards, because he got the Doombringer in 2004, and I’m not sure if it dooms a candidate for all time, or just for one election cycle. I’m hoping its effects are only good for one election cycle, and that Edwards can pull it off this time.
Redshift @ 35
Good for Edwards. I hope he comes out with something strong and clear. Obama started out well I thought, but then he got into mealy-mouthed talk of “goals” and withdrawing only “combat” troops (which means most troops would stay in Iraq indefinitely because they aren’t classified as “combat” troops), etc. The Democrats desperately need to define where they stand on Iraq or they are going to lose any credibility on the issue. I think they only have a few days to do it.
christy – great news! and thanks for the early warning… it gives us a chance to think about the question(s) we want to ask.
Have to admit I’m still annoyed at him for double dog daring the reporters back in ‘84. He would have been MUCH better than Mondale. Oh well.

RevDeb @ 9
There is no goddmaned center. They are chasing something that DOES NOT exist. FDR, LBJ, and Reagan did not win big landslides by “moderating.” And if they bring up Clinton–he didn’t win in 92 because of his moderate DLC claptrap. He won because he was Not-Bush, and because of the fortuitous presence of a third-party billionaire’s relentless attacks on the incumbent. Do not let them confuse Bush 1.0’s weakness in 92 as an affirmation of Clinton’s DLC-style strength. This “let’s be moderate!” crap has a track record of failure.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 37
I wish he could but unfortunately, while the big three have way more audience than cable, they’re also way more expensive.

The double-dog dare was in 88 when he was the presumptive front-runner. Hart ran in 84 and 88. Fortunately, Dukakis stepped into the void that Hart left in 88, and ushered in the era of peace and prosperity that we all enjoy today.
Toby Wollin @ 30
I think they are trying to be moderate in an effort to gain the votes of mostly conservative Republicans, who essentially are afraid that Dems are closet Communists. They’re trying to tease them over by taking baby steps. I think the other thing is that when they govern, they will have to govern all the people, not just progressives, who, I believe, are still a minority. Anyone have any statistics? If not, we really ought to be asking those questions about which progressive basics most resoundingly appeal even to traditional conservatives, and push those hard. Christian principles should really help here, like do unto others, like wiping out the Pharisees from the temple, etc. etc. etc.
Happy Rosh Hashanah – a PEACEFUL and healthy 5768 to all pups!
Kathleen, your Clinton link at #5 above doesn’t work.

MSNBC is a cheaper buy and he knows that “his” audience is more likely to watch that. Then hopefully it will make enough of a splash that parts of it will be aired on other stations on their news for free.
That would be my guess.
peanutbutter @ 43
Yeah, that little action did not show anything more than an incredible level of arrogance and stupidity.
Yes, there is!

I believe that is a normal requirement of law. IIRC when there was an earlier one of these causing folks to panic, the law requires the President to send a letter to the Congress annually declaring that the State of Emergency first declared on such and so date is still in affect. There ae plenty of other reasons to be in a panic about BushCo but this is probably not one in and of itself.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s son, Track, enlisted to become a US Army infantry soldier the day before yesterday, September 11. He’s 18, the same age as my son, who went to the rival high school. According to my son’s friends, Track wants out of the house even more than ET, Jr. does…
Recently, by chance, I had an opportunity to review some of the 1984 campaign for the Democratic nomination for President.
I was stunned at what a visionary Hart was.
Like Gore, and few others, this man has the ability to see around the corner and into the future.
I hope he has a significant role in our government after the 2008 election.
RevDeb @ 58
Excellent. I’d like him to push forward into (progressive) territory where few other candidates are willing to go.
Apparently there is a bill coming up in the senate that will give goopers something to vote for to take a position against the war but which won’t do a damned thing to stop it. Can’t imagine why Reid would let em off the hook like that.
My lasting impression of Gary Hart was a picture of him sitting with Donna Rice (who I recall was really hot) on a yacht called “Monkey Business.” He dared MSM to follow him to prove his peccadillos. Ah, those were the days! Pre-Monica, pre-basically everything.
Fresh thread, up and running for everyone.
Biodun @ 74
I remember the play on that with Opus.

If he had to give up the stop loss program the military would start to evaporate. Then again, with the economy tanking for everyone except the wealthy, he might fill the army with a lot of people facing Hobson’s choice.

Rosh Hashanah
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosh_Hashanah
The Torah refers to the day as “The Day of the Blowing of the Shofar” (Yom Terua, Leviticus 23:24), and rabbinic literature and the liturgy itself describe Rosh Hashanah as “The Day of Judgment” (Yom ha-Din) and “The Day of Remembrance” (Yom ha-Zikkaron). Some midrashic descriptions depict God as sitting upon a throne, while books containing the deeds of all humanity are opened for review, and each person passing in front of Him for evaluation of his or her deeds. All of these names are also referenced in the holiday’s extensive liturgy.
REVIEW OF ONE’S DEEDS, what a good practice.
Sweet! The man is brilliant.
This man *is* the solution to our foreign policy issues. Whomever is elected in ‘08, Hart should be named Sec of State.
Good morning Christy -
Three poignant threads in a row while I’m still asleep, partially awake and staggering around the kitchen making my pot of tea. And, I shall drink every last drop. You must be one of those mythical morning people. I am amazed.
This interview with Gary Hart will be a breath of fresh air. The topic is in this blog every day. I’m looking forward to a full dedication to a Hopefully, we influence.
If not us, who? I’m heading upstairs.
From this morning’s LA Times – it was on the front page, with the headline above the fold:
THE TIMES/BLOOMBERG POLL
Clinton appeals to antiwar Democrats
By Peter Wallsten, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
September 13, 2007
[snipped]
My reaction was that they need to look at the blogs to see what the anti-war Democrats think of the candidates and, in particular, Hillary. I think they’d get a big surprise.
Looking forward to this discussion with Senator Hart.
I was kinda disappointed with The Courage Of Our Convictions, though. Good and absolutely necessary, but it curiously seemed lacking as a book. Perhaps better as an essay. And it’s not that the Senator can’t be compelling. I found The Shield And The Cloak: Security Of The Commons to be spot on.
I met Gary Hart once, he told me to get a haircut.
Wasn’t Gary Hart the guy who was blatantly philandering and expecting the press to keep their mouths shut about it? Only one paper didn’t? And embarrassed the rest of the media which then sheepishly reported it, while holding a blogger ethics panel?
I have respect for him for one thing and one thing only: Helping to breaking the rule that says the media should (wink) (wink) look away when it comes to sex, booze, and other personal pecadillos. It takes a pretty crass guy to shake up the MSM establishment like that.
I’d like to ask him this question: Why won’t the press report Bush’s philadering and drinking?

I don’t know about SoS, but I think Hart and Bob Graham (former Dem Senator of Florida) would be a couple of excellent sources for advice.
