And then there’s this, via ThinkProgress:
WASHINGTON, Sep 12 (IPS) – In sharp contrast to the lionisation of Gen. David Petraeus by members of the U.S. Congress during his testimony this week, Petraeus’s superior, Admiral William Fallon, chief of the Central Command (CENTCOM), derided Petraeus as a sycophant during their first meeting in Baghdad last March, according to Pentagon sources familiar with reports of the meeting.
Fallon told Petraeus that he considered him to be “an ass-kissing little chickenshit” and added, “I hate people like that”, the sources say. That remark reportedly came after Petraeus began the meeting by making remarks that Fallon interpreted as trying to ingratiate himself with a superior.
No doubt Diaper Dave is drawing up a resolution to have him censured by Congress right now. It would be the civil thing to do.

hey jane, did you see the piece where a journalist was in the room when someone from the white house called patraous and made him change is testimony?
it’s linked on the other thread and that needs to be put up the top of this thread becuase it is very aprapos
Oh, and I mentioned this sometime last night re: Diaper Dave’s little resolution. HELLO? First amendment rights in PARTICULAR to political speech?? NO CAN DO.
Of course Dave no doubt wadded a copy of the Constitution into his diapers…
if that Fallon quote is on, look at how much shit is hitting the fan in short order !
Careful, Admiral. Next thing you know, they’ll be calling you a foul-mouthed femblogger or something.
perris @ 8
ok, here’s the clip, man does that belong on this thread or what?
EPU’d from last thread:
“ass kissing little chickenshit”? there’s my kind of man!
I believe I’m starting to like Mr. Fallon.
Diaper Dave:
“I am pushing for the support and passage of a U.S. Senate Resolution decrying a personal attack against General Petraeus taken out by MoveOn.org in a recent edition of the New York Times. I find it despicable – especially since it was printed so close to September 11th. We should be able to come together, Democrats and Republicans, and denounce this type of rhetoric as beyond the pale. General Petraeus received large bipartisan support during his U.S. Senate confirmation and should not be subjected to personal attacks for political points,” said Vitter.
Any truth to the rumor that MoveOn has decided to accommodate Dave and do a full-page ad making a personal
attackstatement about Vitter?Peterr @ 11
Bingo.
perris @ 12
It’s on this thread – the opening clip. And from the other thread, my 61 was a reply to your 100. Time running backwards there?
way off subject, pls. forgive me, but mediabloodhound has done an extensive research and analysis job on how abc gave dennis kucinich the shaft on the previous debate last month, and how washpo and time blogs enabled abc to continue to do so.
yes, i’m blogwhoring, but i’m blogwhoring for mediabloodhound this time. go read the article.
(but just so you don’t think i’m sick or anything, stop by my place, where i have email contact info for abc news and other media outlets that have given kucinich short shrift.)
I’m thinking of betrayus type words for Bush/Cheney that would stick. Any ideas???
OldCoastie @ 14
I salute the admiral. Imagine – a truth teller in these here times.
What I found predictably disgusting about the MoveOn “controversy” is that Lieberschmuck was first out of the gate to denounce MoveOn, while he was on his way to a party featuring Ann “faggot” Coulter. Can’t appear partisan, ya know.
Wait, that is the clip atop this thread.
Not that I believe Joe Klein for a minute — he’s only guessing that Petraeus took a call from the White House during the committee’s recess. And he doesn’t remember it was Evan Bayh who Petraeus interrupted to revisit his “I don’t know” answer to Senator Warner. Joke Line sez “I was in the room” but there’s very little actual reporting taking place.
Best part of the clip is when Tweety calls Petraeus “a little Charlie McCarthy action.”
Is it true that Dick Cheney was drinking a glass of water while General Petreaus spoke?
-GSD
I think MoveOn should buy another full page and print Fallons quote. /s
peanutbutter @ 9
Vitter is such a wanker. If he had half a brain he would be keeping a very low profile, but no. His ego insists that he keep putting himself out there, and in a way that just makes him look even more ridiculous, if that’s possible. Sadly, from what I hear on local talk radio, it is just scandalous how Vitter is being attacked. The rationalizations are beyond amazing: 1) He wasn’t arrested. True, there’s a statute of limitations. But he did admit to a “sin” with a prostitute. 2)This is a private matter between him and his wife. IF he were a private citizen, yeah. But he’s up on that moral high-horse and telling the rest of us how to live, so his “sins” are fair game. But the selective memory issues for Vitter are the best. He replaced a man who got caught cheating on his wife (Bob Livingston). At the time Vitter said that stepping down was the right thing for Livingston to do, since he had let down his constituents. Now that the shoe is on Vitter’s foot, it’s going to take a crowbar and a team of mules to get him out.
Eureka Springs @ 24
That’s exactly what I thought when I read the Fallon quote earlier today. Let Vitter put that in his diaper and smoke it.
Petraeus is “An ass-kissing little chickenshit.” Adm. Fallon hit the nail on the head
TeddySanFran @ 26
‘Twould be poetic justice, to be sure, but without some direct confirmation/clarification from the Admiral or the person quoted, I think such an ad would be big and well-deserved trouble for MoveOn.org.

From Jane’s first link:
Why does this sound familiar? I think it was on scarecrow’s early morning thread, from the Q&A with Petraeus:
Hmmm . . . John Warner was formerly the Secretary of the Navy. . . You don’t suppose that Admiral Fallon might have chatted with an old Navy buddy after throwing a brick through the TV while watching Petraeus’ performance before the House? “John, ask General Kiss-ass if this mess has made us safer!”

FWIW, I read the news account and do not see the worry. They are grounding training and non-essential operations such as check flights. And your guy gave an ambassadorship to the head man responsible for the Swiftboating that slandered John Kerry during a campaign for President. Yet you have the nerve to criticize others who are seeking to have this general tell the truth instead of reciting White House talking points? You have a hell of a lot of nerve!”

Now things have become a lot simpler: It’s always good for Republicans; anonymous sources are fine; don’t fact check; don’t analyze; just copy down what people tell you; throw in one short opposing quote for balance and you’re done.
Ann in AZ @ 129

From last thread, but still. Why do these Repukes get all wound up by moveon? It defeats their argument that moveon is a “childish” Lamont-supporting George Soros controlled “leftist fringe group” not representative of any large group of “respectable” people(inspite of its large membership), nor capable of doing so. I see the Brit move as a potential good thing. Whosis name, the new Brit PM, is NOT a Lapdog for BushCo in the Tony Blair tradition and may be having the troops close to Iran as a signal to Bush that attacking would not be seen favorably by our most trusted ally.
Bush’s timing on this slight withdraw is really bad for him. I’m always surprised in a bad way by how Congress reacts to him, but I think Bush seems so uncaring and out of touch, with no mission and no real idea of what’s happening in Iraq, that it’s all going to collapse in the next few weeks. On top of this, oil hit 80, the economy is looking dire. What Congress can do about this, I don’t know, because Bush will veto anything he doesn’t like, but I don’t think it’s going to be the whitewash we were all expecting a couple days ago.

I called John Lewis’s Atlanta office today. (emailed last eve). And, some other stuff.
I sent this update to Siun via email, earlier:
~~~Siun, fyi I called ~1:30 pm ET. I had a 5-10 min conversation with the woman who answered the phone.
She was incredibly nice, very interested. Had not heard about the incident. I told her what I knew. I tried to be as brief as possible, but started to stray off with a bit of a rant because I found talking about the whole thing got me even more angry. I caught myself and said, oh, sorry, I see I’m starting to ramble. She said, no, don’t worry– This is something John Lewis needs to look into.
She wanted the link to your post at FDL, (that was to Siun) and she got it open while we were on the phone. I stressed that Lewis and staff need to watch both videos and not just rely on the police report.
She said she would sent out an email about this (I assume she meant to all Lewis staff). And thanked me profusely for phoning with the information.~~~~
You are wrong on this, John. We have every right — and a duty — to call into question those who serve this criminal administration in perpetuating this war. As I recall, you did an admirable job of opposing LBJ’s war. What’s happened to that John Kerry?
How many repubs get asked to repudiate all the Coulter etc. nonsense.
Now, Boehner has really stepped in it. Do you think the dems will comment about it? Will the reporters ask repubs if they agree? Will they even ask Boehner?
Why is their such a double standard? And, how do we change that?
dakine01 @ 165
Agreed, although Putin may be an neocon imposter.
Big Papi, Walk-off Homer…!!! Mazel Tov, Big Mitch!!! 8-)
In an earlier comment on another post I said I thought the Senators should bring Fallon in for a chat, since some of Feingold’s questions were so far above Petraeus’ pay grade. Maybe Fallon can give them more on priorities and color in the big picture. Maybe while they are at it, they could also ask him his opinion of Petraeus, cause you know they’ll never own up. I doubt that Fallon would be very forthcoming either in front of Congress, but they might have some fun. I would certainly call him in before I gave the President any of the money he’s asked for…perhaps as a condition for even thinking of giving him the money. Seems the least they could do is make it hard for him to get the loot.
Uh BigMitch?
Final score: Red Sox 5, Tampa Bay 4
Big Papi with two run HR in the bottom of the 9th for the win.
But the more the Repugs talk it up, the more it reinforces that Petraeus is not to be trusted. Goes back to the psychological effects of how repeating the negative reinforces it and makes folks think it’s the truth.
Really turns the tables on the Rs with all their vaunted media spin for once.
This administration has reinvigorated the arms race. The whole world is on edge worried about the maniacs running this country.
Thanks too, CTuttle!
Rev. Yearwood Discusses Capitol Arrest
New Salon piece:
How Bush is trying to save face in Iraq
snip
Artillery barrages of TV commercials seeking to soften public opinion preceded Petraeus’ report. A new front group, Freedom’s Watch, founded at the instigation of the White House, funded by Bush’s political financiers (including prominent members of the Scooter Libby Defense Fund) and directed by Dan Senor (former press secretary for the catastrophic Coalition Provisional Authority), launched a series of ads that were a pastiche of past Republican themes. Children in small-town America were depicted raising a flag, a scene plagiarized from Ronald Reagan’s 1984 “Morning Again in America” commercial. Then fragments of Bush’s 2004 campaign washed up like messages in bottles. Soldiers who had lost limbs in Iraq segued into pictures of the burning World Trade Center as words appeared on the screen: “They attacked us.” A soldier said, “We’re winning on the ground in Iraq. It’s no time to quit.” A bereaved woman whose uncle died as a fireman in the twin towers and whose husband was killed in Iraq spoke as words flashed on the screen: “More attacks.” “Surrender is not an option.” In another ad, a Marine in a wheelchair said, “To hear Congress talk about surrendering really makes me angry.” After these poisons were injected into the atmosphere, Petraeus emerged from behind the curtain as the sober voice of reason.
The country sure are a mess. Goodnight Lahoma.
Turn out the light kiddo.
That is the nominal reason fro the stand down. I was involved in one when I was on active duty. But it did not say that ALL flights were shut down which I read as being the security necessary flights would still be operational as required
Only 43 Iraqis killed today. Ain’t that good news?
thank you. actually a number of things, none good. we may have that dam false flag attack yet. i’ll try to give warning if we do realize it is gonna go down.
also, it appears Chimpy is gonna throw down on iran by the 20th. i base this on a 700 million dollar speculation in “put” options recently made at the NYSE (and others in all likelihood) which only pays off if the stock market loses half its current value by that time. Nobody throws away three quarters of a billion dollars on a hunch. i played the market a lot when i was working and had the money to lose (actually made a little but not much), so i know how this kind of thing works.
there is one other possibility, that tis is part of a derivative setup by the major players in the NYSE themselves to protect themselves against a huge loss. That has been done twice, once in Gulf War One and (you guessed it) once in the current war. so maybe it isn’t as bad as it looks. we shall, regrettably, see.
What is going on with these put options?:
http://www.canadafreepress.com…..090407.htm
I don’t understand how these know the motives behind such a deal. They don’t know the other positions of the parties. Hedging can make you do funny things.
But, my number three theory I would add, assuming that they are exposed that way would be an attack on Iran. Some one sees something real stupid coming up and is hedging against ME oil traffic being blocked, and the effects all confused hell breaking out and maybe the US getting its army trapped.
Also, were not the 9/11 AQ financial plays disquised? The pieces were put together after the attack. If AQ is financially savvy enough to deal like that, they would be smart enough to know some one would notice and make inferences.
And what is the Canadian Free Press, anyway. I can’t figur it out. Seems like more opinion than news.
Totally offtopic
But here’s a standout part of the article on toy recalls and the consumer product safety commission. It so typical for Repubs like HoJOe and Lynne Cheney to hound the record industry forusing salty language, and not being “family values” in a distorted “The Stepfather” kind of manner, and yet those family values don’t include protecting kids from poisonous toys.
Dang. Beat me too it while I was trying to figure what what the heck that Canadian Free Press thing was.
If the September sales job for Iraq doesn’t go well, or the public doesn’t buy it, or turns even further against it because it wasn’t persuasive (which I think it was not), Cheney might persuade now is the time that great men double down for the sake of humanity.
That would be a mess.
MoveOn.org are saboteurs and armchair agents provocateurs attempting to muddle the antiwar message. They never established themselves as being opposed even to the nearly universally opposed Iraq war. They backed Kerry, Hillary, and other such war hawks. They’ve rarely step out onto the street to demonstrate against war or much of anything else. They strongly support compromise after compromise in Congress and discourage any impulse there might be to fulfill Congress’s mandate of 2006. Why should you defend such useful idiots? I wouldn’t trust them as far as I can throw them.
Hugh @ 278
that’s already been factored in. the only thing that will produce this sort of a meltdown in the equities markets is
a) a war with iran that doesn’t go well (straits of hormuz blocked, tankers sunk, etc)
b) a NUCLEAR war with iran that doesn’t go well (oil supplies contaminated and all of (a)
c) a false flag nuclear detonation inside the us.
hobson’s choice, financially.
BUT…
to the big hedge funds and investment banks, 700 mil is an acceptable loss against amounts in the tens of Trillions. The problems we have already HAD with the NINJA loan business have wiped out over A TRILLION (yes with a T) dollars in equity values around the world. If we were to trace this worldwide I suspect we’d find the whole thing is funded by a small hedge fund acting as shell broker and set to either lose the money if nothing happens, or pay out huge profits to the founders (about 2 trillion world wide) if things go to hell.
In the modern markets, IF you know what you’re doing and have enough liquid cash, you almost CAN’T lose money. This simply may be more of that.
There has been a series of worse than expected news lately, and there seems to be a lot of market resonse.
So, I would be careful about the ‘already factored in’ argument.
If things are out of historical norms, sometimes you can watch the factoring in real time, which may what be going on now.
And, as I said you cannot see the party’s entire net position.
You might be rght that some small group of actors is pissing their pants at potential losses and feels like they have to do some mighty hedging right now.
Or -iran is due.
Sorry, typing too fast. Hope that above is figure-outable.
Well besides frontman Ari Fleisher, the big money is that of Sheldon Adelson, owner of the ex-Jewish mob run Sands Cas*no, and reputedly the “world’s richest Jew”.
http://www.jewishjournal.com/h…..p?id=16973
He and his Israeli wife are close friends and financial supporters of L*kud’s Bibi Netanyahu, and have bought a free daily newspaper that is even sent by mail to Israelis. The content is definitely pro-L*KUD..and certainly is not based on a sound “economic model”. It’s propoganda designed to resurrect Bibi’s political career.
Adelson was over in Israel this Summer during the L*KUD party elections and even “hosted” a bunch of US Senators and Congressmen on the trip.
Yeah, the article says “according to sources familiar with the meeting.”
Just who are these sources? I love how unnamed sources claim certain things were said and the media runs with it as if it’s fact.
Shouldn’t this be fact checked as rigorously as the General’s statistics?
Isn’t it just obvious in hindsight – of course, Fallon is right. How does anyone ever get anywhere with the Bush Administration? By being the more craven, obsequious, weaselly, brown-nosing toady than the next guy.
