Marisa,

Many folks don’t understand that the two sides of the Texas-Mexico border is itself a close-knit community, one that would be damaged by heavy-handed federal actions. Such as the death of Ezequial Hernandez.

You may remember the shooting–Ezequial Hernandez in Redford, Texas 10 years ago. The old name for the town is El Polvo, and the region is sometimes called La Junta de los Rios or just La Junta. Hernandez, a teenager born and raised in Redford, was shot at a range of about 100 yards by US marines who were on border patrol in full combat gear and camoflage. Hernandez, who was herding goats at the time, was armed with a single shot .22 rifle, effective against snakes and coyotes. If you ever pass through Redford, stop at Enrique Madrid’s house and Enrique can show you the spot where Hernandez fell. The spot is right on the edge of town. Imagine if your teen-aged son was killed by Marines in your town. The marines testified that Hernandez threatened them with his single shot .22. Stand where Hernandez died, and you are within easy eye-sight of the home he was born in, and the church he was baptized in.

Heck. Gore/Clinton would be acceptable. Not very tasty, but acceptable.

I don’t think either Gore or Clinton would accept the arrangement. Hillary has not come this far to end up “number two”. And I think Gore has been saving his own set of “green stamps” over what the Clintons did NOT do for him when he ran.

Why would she end up Number Two? It’s not as if she’s in poor health, or a hundred years old. Is she even 60 yet? Eight years as vice president would be an almost certain catapult into another eight as president.

One reason why the Vietnam protests went sour is that the leaders didn’t have the discipline that the civil rights leaders had a half decade earlier. I remember, because I was there and participated in both. There wasn’t any rock-throwing during the sit-ins.

The rock-throwing doesn’t have to be by the demonstrators. See here, for instance. But it’s true that good discipline and tight organization can uncover tricks like this.

Greetings all, back again.

Did anyone happen to see if Hilarious did well by herself today? I missed that portion of the hearings.

Sen. Byrd was a wonder to behold. Both Crocker and Petreaus actually seemed a bit afraid of the old gent. Talk about genuine gravitas, he didn’t even bother to pretend to be impressed.

When you are Sen. Byrd of West Virginia, you don’t have to…

Hillary was clear on point and really summarized everything that had taken place in the hearing and brought us into the now and let both Crocker and Petraeus know the situation in Iraq was coming up way short of the projected benchmarks.

I thought she diverted from that clarity when she “blamed the Iraqis” for the failures, instead of owning that congress had made a very bad decision in Oct of 2002. I will never forget being in shock when they voted for that resolution instead of delaying until after the fall election. So many experts who understood the sectarian tensions that were in Iraq and who questioned the intelligence told us so.

Hillary avoided taking responsibility for that vote (even though we know it was based on the bad intelligence they were receiving). Hillary should have been listening to the Diane Rehm show for a more diverse and educated opinions about the situation in Iraq.

Tonight Pat Bucahnan brought up one thing I have been repeating over and over. It is just a crying shame that our reps did not spend this kind of time and research before the war resolution vote in 2002.

The special on PBS about the Afghanistan election and Malalai Joya was incredible. What a brave woman. Wonder if she could join FDL as a guest to discuss what is taking place for her right now in Afghanistan? Impossible?

LS at #145, thanks for the answer. She just left so suddenly, and someone else explained she wouldn’t be available (she didn’t say goodbye, sniff,) so I wondered if something had happened.

I’ve always wondered about that station. During most of Y2K, I was working in Manhattan and living in Battery Park City during the week and a lot of time walked to offices in the financial district and down next to South Street Seaport. Those guys had to have been affected badly by 9/11 but I could never remember the station number.

FDNY, Engine 7, Ladder 1. Engine 7’s firehouse is just several blocks from the WTC.

There was an engine and ladder company on Liberty Street right across from the south tower and also across from the Deutsche Bank Building. That’s the one I’m thinking of.
