One of the truths of Hispanic culture is that we can make a fiesta out of just about any gathering. That was definitely the case last weekend in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley where throughout the weekend people trekked from one international bridge or border area to another to wrap up the Hands Across El Rio protest against the proposed border wall.
On this last weekend of the protest that spanned the border from El Paso to Laredo over the last 16 days, it was reported that hundreds showed up.
On Saturday in Brownsville, the president of the local university, along with, state congressmen, students and townspeople all clasped hands along a chain-link fence located at the Gateway International Bridge and formed a human chain that stretched across the border into Mexico.
The human chain was the protest’s symbolic gesture of solidarity between the two countries and was used at each of the 11 sites throughout the protest.
At the weekend gatherings, in addition to finding the traditional signs and banners, chants and speeches, that are the hallmarks of every protest, there was also comida (food), refrescos (drinks), piñatas and informational booths from all the different organizations opposed to the wall.
Does that mean people aren’t serious? Not at all.
It just goes to show that the wall is not just piercing generic towns but a culture that balances itself on the pillars of community and family.
No one disputes the seriousness of the issue and its very harmful impact on the border communities, but sometimes there needs to be a bit of levity to drive home how absurd something is.
It was reported that was accomplished with Texas State Representative Kino Flores who was to have brought a 24-foot ladder to a couple of the protests symbolizing that if 20-foot walls are built, 24-foot ladders would become the new Valley industry.
For now, the last organized protest to show Washington that a border wall is not wanted in their backyards will be September 29. It’s being called “No Border Wall Pachanga in the Park.”
Pachanga is another term for party in Spanish.
The organizers explain that the intent of the family-friendly event is to “show the broad range of community opposition to the wall and show the nation that the image of the border as a war zone is false.”
For some reason, people who live far from the border refuse to accept this reality that people along the Rio Grande don’t live under a state of constant siege.
All I can say, it’s a good thing we like fiestas so much. I have a feeling there will have to be a lot more thrown before Washington finally joins the party.

Ola, Marisa…!!!
Mr Bush, tear down this wall!

Good one!
This is really cool, Marissa.
Does anyone know what the senate is voting on right now?
For those in my family from Mexico:

We can be together
Hmmm. If you are around I answered you downstairs.
Ah! A Maginot Line for the US! It worked so well for the French, n’est-ce pas?
what a wonderful idea and event, I love it.
But what is the photo? It looks like it might be a section of wall, maybe a balloon of one, since the child appears to have it on a stick. I’m kind of old and can’t read the caption.
This may be a trivial concern next to the human issues, but since the idea of an impervious border barrier was brought up, it has seemed that somebody ought to have thought about potential damage to animals that depend on being able to wander throughout ranges that extend on both sides of the border. The Sonoran Desert is complicated, and I sure wouldn’t want to assert that none of the mammals and reptiles would be imperiled by having their movements checked.
Did anyone ever do an Environmental Impact Statement for the wall? If not, then is the wall even legal?
If the FedGov insists on having its wall, what steps ought it take to keep from damaging the wildlife?
zennurse @ 13
It’s a wall pinata, no?
behindthefall @ 14
Ah, but when did any department under this
Administration ever consider possible implications of their actions? Hmmm?
Bush is gonna say that he plans to reduce troop levels by 30,000 by summer- but he conditions that reduction upon progress…
WahOOOOO
What a dishonest fuckhead. He couldn’t keep those troops in Iraq if he wanted to- cause he’s fresh out of meat.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 9
well, that was just right OKK
Toby Wollin @ 16
Like they give a shit.
For anyone who missed the testimony today, it looks like highlights will be replayed on CSpan in 10 minutes, starting with Foreign Relations. The entire hearings will be on all night on CSpan2 starting at 10:30pm EST
ttp://inside.c-spanarchives.org:8080/cspan/schedule.csp
Again the president takes advantage of Americans who are too fuckin stupid to tie their own shoes- he’s takin back the troops he added and calls it a draw down- then he says it’s conditional- when in fact it’s FORCED.
lyin sack of shit
Great post. And I think you (and the group opposing the wall) are onto something important in effective protests more generally. Bill the in part as a party, as a happy event. I am serious! I was in Spain during the million plus person march against the Iraq war that in the end turned the government away from this immoral venture. There were whole families walking -grannies and babies in strollers, with music along the way. What made the 60s marches so effective, was the amount of playfulness and good will (and love) that was part of it all. I will never forget the photo of the girl in SF(?) putting a flower in the barrel of some national guardsman’s rifle. That image and the massacre of students Kent State were vital turning points in the anti-war movemen.
“All I can say, it’s a good thing we like fiestas so much. I have a feeling there will have to be a lot more thrown before Washington finally joins the party.”
Can they sell arms and munitions to the masses? The Pentagon has to make a living somehow besides just our taxes.
Oh no. Sorry for the OT but I just saw a rerun of General Pace this morning in full uniform. Can we all have an outfit like that? Will this be the new trend in fashion? All that brass and flashy medals blinded me!
rwcole @ 17
Webb kept hammering Betrayus about where the troops were gonna come from…!!!
Chris Mathews is GOING OFF. On everyone.
While Petraeus was testifying, his headquarters came under attack – 1 killed, and 11 coalition troops injured:

raven @ 15
It looks like a big party pinata. What is it filled with?
Richmond @ 22
The flower in the barrel was at the first march on the Pentagon March
I didn’t see anything on Kos about the Reverend getting tackled by the capitol police who broke his leg.
I find that strange, unless it was up earlier and is gone now…anyway, I didn’t see it. That is an important story.
Tear down the wallzennurse @ 13
That picture is of a little girl whacking a piñata that is shaped and decorated to look like a wall.
Hopefully, if she broke it, the prize inside would have been candy that would have fallen out.
Toby Wollin @ 16
We mortals would be required to think ahead a bit if we were going to, say, dam a river. If the FedGov didn’t, then could someone file a suit against them?
But then, when did they ever think about the effects of Jersey barriers stretching for miles along a divided 8-lane highway plunked down through a forest. The animals you see dead beside the road when one of those goes through are sometimes beyond what you could have imagined. I still see pictures in my mind of a raccoon the size of a German shepherd with completely silver hair; it was probably the Father of the Forest. Who knows what is dying beside the !@#$% wall?
Marisa Treviño @ 31
Remind me to tell you an awful pinata story some tine.
I hope the people refuse to work on the wall.

Thanks so much for updating us on this, Marisa. It was such an interesting story when you covered it for us, it’s great to see how the community has made the whole thing into a community celebration of collective life together.
All you rich folks who agitate about all the illegals. Just try a year without any Mexicans. Who’s going to mow your lawn?
In Ojinaga, Chihuahua I believe one of the best examples of an excellent mixtures of cultures is this artist Bryant “Eduardo” Holman (Fausto’s Art Gallery-you can look him up on the internet). He does some really good and funny “Day of the Dead” art work and has some really interesting antidotes regarding Santisima Muerte a religious cult.
Perhaps I will contact him for a spell of protection regarding the people no matter who they are living all across the Mexican/US border.
So we can settle this matter, okay?….
raven @ 29
Thanks, memory fades, but what a powerful image.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 37
Mow the lawn, hell. More like pull up the tumble weed that encroaches on the golf course (and personal landscape)
I was downstairs watching KO all bymyself!!
Keith at Ground Zero. Looks like a good show ahead.

Richmond @ 39
Chihuahua is fascinating country. I’ve driven those back roads with worthless maps for days on end.
Mr Bush: You are a jelly donut.

Happy Day!
CTuttle @ 46
it’s not really so happy, tho, is it?
And Patriot Day, blecchh Bush spoilt that.
Some of you FDLers may notice that I stick up for Matthews around these parts based on what I hear him report.
But I would like to slap him upside the head right now. I just finished watching the full hour of Hardball, and for Matthews segment on 9/11 he chose to cover whether Giulianni is using his outstanding response on 9/11 in an opportunistic way? One of the guest tried to turn the focus to the families, surviviors and heroes of 9/11 and Matthews grabbed the reins and focused on Giulianni again.
Damn Matthews you could have had 9/11 family members against the war in Iraq, you could have had the firemen struggling with upper respiratory, you could have done so much more than focus on Giulianni
Jesus Mary and Joseph Matthews today should belong to the families, survivors and heroes of 9/11. If I had a family member that perished in that tragedy I would be pissed.
Matthews could have covered Giulianni tomorrow…
Happy Rudy Day!! $16 million richer for him as his lady to spend on things like purses.
I love Feingold! Crocker does a dance around whether fighting Al Q in Pakistan or Iraq.
the rich folk who complain about illegals uhhh and who do you think hire them…………hmmmmmmmmmm
RIP John O’Neill who died on 911. And my friend Kathy.

Gawd, the General looks like he’s wearing a christmas tree.

sorry CTuttle, I always hate this day, didn’t mean to take it out on you.

First we have to bring Al Queda to Iran, then maybe we’ll have time for Pakistan.
am i the only one who cannot abide richard wolfe?
Kathleen, you’re right. Very insensitive of Matthews.

No worries, I agree, it is only Patriot Day… 8-(

Jonathan @ 66
yeah, you missed the Road to Liberty
Loo Hoo. @ 62
I’m not much of a daytime TV show person but during the hearings today I put on Oprah where she had children who lost a relative during 9/11 and it was so touching. It was better than listening to Kissie face Joe.
Rudy a hero? I don’t think so. I won’t mind a bit if this character is the GOP nominee.
I guess Rudy is now president of 911.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 70
And Freddie has already caught him in the polls. Don’t the Repugs need to know anything about their candidates or will just any old Hollywood star do?
Queen puppy torturer Judy Ghouliani’s mascara is running….Awwwww

Gawd. If the “base” could uncork their heads for a couple of hours, maybe there would be hope for them. Boneheads.
We need another spell…no attacks before the election…putting in an order.
The lineup:
On one side: corporations, congress, WH, the Supreme Court and some other federal and state courts, and MSM.
On the other side: the people.
Not a fair fight, at this point.
LS @ 75
isn’t tonight the night for the spell?
Elliott @ 77
It’s already done…all through the night, I think. Oathtakers beware! McConnell might already have perjured himself today, and well Petraeus…there was the thing about who wrote his report.
Mr. Gore, if he came in, would be unbeatable.
Up next on KO: The man who found the steel cross at the WTC site, now lives in a trailer on a friend’s property.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 79
Yes, he would.
LS @ 75
Did you see this one, on how the OBL tape seems to be a forgery?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 79
I’m still hopeful, but others keep saying he’s not running. Thing is, he hasn’t said he’s not running, that is why I am hopeful.
If there is another 9-11 type thing in this country between now and next summer; two things will happen. We will bomb Iran and we will have at least eight more years of Republican tyranny.
Thinking about this post in connection with the one below about the reverend getting his leg broken by the Capitol police and Norske’s comment. We need some serious instruction in non-violent protest, the kind Ghandi did and the kind we learned how to do under Martin Luther King lo these almost 40 years ago.
Non-violent protest isn’t rocket science, but it takes some instruction to know how not to get your skull crushed by a police baton, and how to go limp in a way that won’t result in a dislocated shoulder. The central government of this country maybe moving towards monarchy and banana republicanism, but they are not going to machine-gun thousands of demonstrators, ever. If you are going to have effective demonstrations, which I agree we need, you need to have discipline. One reason why the Vietnam protests went sour is that the leaders didn’t have the discipline that the civil rights leaders had a half decade earlier. I remember, because I was there and participated in both. There wasn’t any rock-throwing during the sit-ins.
If the Democrats fail to make any effective inroads on this truly terrible situation we’ve got ourselves into in Washington — which has become an imperial capital not only in relation to the rest of the world, but in relation to the rest of us — we will eventually have to demonstrate. And if we do, it will require serious organization.
ccmask @ 71
Rheam-o 911
OKK,
I believe you assume a level playing field.
GordonM @ 82
Good!! All you have to do is look at the pictures of OBL and compare to know without a doubt that it is not OBL. Maybe the spell is working…Beware Oathtakers.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 64
Can you guys live without tubes?
If Gore doesn’t run Lahoma thinks we will be stuck with Rudy/Freddy v. Hillary/Obama. Naturally, I agree.
The Jersey Girls are on it.
I took this picture a couple of years ago of the firehouse window that is across the street from the WTC site.

LS @ 83
Lahoma says the man is such a tease. ;0)
Loo Hoo. @ 98
McConnell said that the German terrorist plot was uncovered because of the surveillance allowed under the most recent (August) FISA bill. The Germans refuted it, as well as someone in the “know”, saying the info was uncovered a year ago.
LS @ 83
He had a booth at the San Diego dem meet-up this Saturday. Or I should say his supporters did.
Hillary won the straw poll.
What did Hillary ask Betrayus today? Missed the whole thing…
Blub @ 100
Yup.. Somehow, I don’t get the feeling those Capitol Police are Dems…
Here is another picture of badges of emergency workers who helped on 911 that were set up at St. Paul’s church.
Please notice Rudy’s badge is not on the pile.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 101
I’ll eat my hat, if Gore throws his hat in…!!! 8-(
ccmask @ 105
He probably has or will sell it for millions on Ebay.
51% in Zogby poll want Executive Branch investigated as to their actions before, during, and following 9/11. 51% want them impeached.
LS @ 107
Not probably LS. He would definitely sell it. I wonder how he made out with the crowds today?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 90
Hillary won’t choose Obama imo. He’s been the only one attacking her and doesn’t have the experience she needs to bring to the ticket. I would love to see her have Edwards on her ticket, but I think she’ll need someone with military credentials. Edwards could hold a cabinet post. My guesses!
ccmask @ 92
Really cool pic!
One thing I am fairly certain of is that the Democratic candidates for president and their supporters are very much hoping Gore doesn’t run.
LS @ 108
Those no.’s would sky rocket if Pelosi lets Conyers do his job…!!!
Lieberman wins worst person in the world!! For Hannity’s Freedom concert!!

Lieberman is the Worst Person in the World. Attending an event this evening moderated by Hannity, and attended by Coulter.
KO: Worst person in the world — Joe Lieberman.
At this point, of the declared candidates, I support Edwards, with two or three acceptable veep choices.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 118
Me too, but I feel almost guilty for not supporting Kucinich.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 118
I want Gore/Obama
R.I.P., Joe Zawinul, an immigrant from Austria who contributed much more to our culture than another Austrian I could name.
ccmask @ 109
Why would Rudy have a badge?
Loo Hoo. @ 110
If HRC is the nominee, her veep will be the general who was the supreme commander of NATO, who had a brief unsuccessful run for President. Why am I blanking on his name?
KO special comment now.
Loo Hoo. @ 110
Edwards as Veep would help Hill out down South better than, say Clark as you enumerate…!!!
Watch out for Friday the 14th. They will be grounding all of the US defenses for an entire day, and they have publicly announced it.
Why would they announce that they are grounding the entire air defense of the country??? Why??
Something stinks.
Loo Hoo. @ 110
I don’t think Edwards would take the VP slot even if Hillary offered it to him.
burnspbesq @ 121
Aaaagh! I just posted a couple Weather Report vid’s on Late Night a few nights ago!
OT, but I don’t remember hearing that Valerie Plame Wilson’s book is published. Why didn’t you guys tell me? I’m kidding, I’m assuming it may have been discussed sometime while I wasn’t around.
Is Christy mad at us? Did she have a sudden, unexpected nervous breakdown because we drove her crazy with one liners? Whazzup?
ccmask @ 120
Heck. Gore/Clinton would be acceptable. Not very tasty, but acceptable.
Eureka Springs @ 124

I’ve always wondered about that station. During most of Y2K, I was working in Manhattan and living in Battery Park City during the week and a lot of time walked to offices in the financial district and down next to South Street Seaport. Those guys had to have been affected badly by 9/11 but I could never remember the station number.
Loo Hoo. @ 122
Actually he wouldn’t.
ccmask @ 136
And I bet Mitt wouldn’t loan him one (of his dozens, if not hundreds), either!
Greetings all, back again.
Did anyone happen to see if Hilarious did well by herself today? I missed that portion of the hearings.
Sen. Byrd was a wonder to behold. Both Crocker and Petreaus actually seemed a bit afraid of the old gent. Talk about genuine gravitas, he didn’t even bother to pretend to be impressed.
Big Mitch @ 119
Me too, but I can’t figure out why I feel that way. That is crazy. Are we afraid he’s too “new agey”. I like new age stuff. It must be the unsquelched lizard brain reserves in the canyons of my mind…Doesn’t make sense. I agree with him on everything, and besides, he’s a tough character. I may just go ahead and trust “the quiz” that told me that he’s my candidate, and his wife rocks too.
LS @ 126
Yeah. Why would they make something like that public? Have they done this in the past with public notification?
ccmask @ 136
badger talk was yesterday.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 130
I don’t think either Gore or Clinton would accept the arrangement. Hillary has not come this far to end up “number two”. And I think Gore has been saving his own set of “green stamps” over what the Clintons did NOT do for him when he ran.

I guess she has a real life. She burned up the keyboard at an astonishing rate. I burned out after about 3 sections of liveblogging…Christy is a treasure, and Mr. Redd has to have some time with his treasure and the Peanut. She is remarkable, as are all of you guys. She’s probably busily writing the next thing to blow our minds with.
We really like Kucinich. But we don’t think he could win the presidency. But if I could wave a wand and make Mr. Kucinch president, I would in a heartbeat.
David W. Bartoo @ 138
When you are Sen. Byrd of West Virginia, you don’t have to…

LS at #145, thanks for the answer. She just left so suddenly, and someone else explained she wouldn’t be available (she didn’t say goodbye, sniff,) so I wondered if something had happened.
Enjoy the moment.
Yankees winning, Red Sox losing.
The special on PBS about the Afghanistan election and Malalai Joya was incredible. What a brave woman. Wonder if she could join FDL as a guest to discuss what is taking place for her right now in Afghanistan? Impossible?
Toby Wollin @ 147
Hillary was clear on point and really summarized everything that had taken place in the hearing and brought us into the now and let both Crocker and Petraeus know the situation in Iraq was coming up way short of the projected benchmarks.
I thought she diverted from that clarity when she “blamed the Iraqis” for the failures, instead of owning that congress had made a very bad decision in Oct of 2002. I will never forget being in shock when they voted for that resolution instead of delaying until after the fall election. So many experts who understood the sectarian tensions that were in Iraq and who questioned the intelligence told us so.
Hillary avoided taking responsibility for that vote (even though we know it was based on the bad intelligence they were receiving). Hillary should have been listening to the Diane Rehm show for a more diverse and educated opinions about the situation in Iraq.
Tonight Pat Bucahnan brought up one thing I have been repeating over and over. It is just a crying shame that our reps did not spend this kind of time and research before the war resolution vote in 2002.
Knut Wicksell @ 85
The rock-throwing doesn’t have to be by the demonstrators. See here, for instance. But it’s true that good discipline and tight organization can uncover tricks like this.
Toby Wollin @ 142
Why would she end up Number Two? It’s not as if she’s in poor health, or a hundred years old. Is she even 60 yet? Eight years as vice president would be an almost certain catapult into another eight as president.
Well, so much for any serious discussion about the wall.
Marisa,
Many folks don’t understand that the two sides of the Texas-Mexico border is itself a close-knit community, one that would be damaged by heavy-handed federal actions. Such as the death of Ezequial Hernandez.
You may remember the shooting–Ezequial Hernandez in Redford, Texas 10 years ago. The old name for the town is El Polvo, and the region is sometimes called La Junta de los Rios or just La Junta. Hernandez, a teenager born and raised in Redford, was shot at a range of about 100 yards by US marines who were on border patrol in full combat gear and camoflage. Hernandez, who was herding goats at the time, was armed with a single shot .22 rifle, effective against snakes and coyotes. If you ever pass through Redford, stop at Enrique Madrid’s house and Enrique can show you the spot where Hernandez fell. The spot is right on the edge of town. Imagine if your teen-aged son was killed by Marines in your town. The marines testified that Hernandez threatened them with his single shot .22. Stand where Hernandez died, and you are within easy eye-sight of the home he was born in, and the church he was baptized in.
