You just gotta love it. A Republican on Capitol Hill, caught bang to rights by the coppers, still thinking he can ride it out — much to the dismay of his fellow Republicans, who just want him to go away quietly so they can focus on getting another Republican elected to his seat next year.
Larry Craig? Nah — John Doolittle:
California Rep. John Doolittle’s defiant pronouncement that he will seek re-election to the House in 2008 has to send shivers down the spines of savvy Republican strategists.
For months, political operatives have been acting as though Doolittle’s retirement is a foregone conclusion due to a series of ethics questions that continue to dog him.
[...]
Two members of the Republican House leadership pointedly refused to endorse him earlier this week and several serious primary challengers have already emerged.
Doolittle as the Republican nominee also virtually assures that 2006 Democratic nominee Charlie Brown will be the next Congressman from the 4th District, despite the seat’s underlying Republicanism.
Brown was little known and underfunded in 2006 — a problem he won’t have next November assuming Doolittle is on the ballot.
And even better:
Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif., denounced his GOP critics as “weasels” Friday even as his chief of staff appeared before a federal grand jury investigating Doolittle’s ties to jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Doolittle also told reporters on a conference call Friday that he believes the Justice Department’s long-running probe “borders on harassment.”
Prosecutors are investigating connections between Doolittle and Abramoff including payments that Doolittle’s wife, Julie, got from Abramoff even after a fundraiser she was paid to plan got canceled.
Doolittle’s chief of staff, Ron Rogers, spent an hour and 20 minutes before a federal grand jury at U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Friday. His appearance came two days after Doolittle’s scheduler and deputy chief of staff appeared before the same grand jury.
[...]
The nine-term incumbent is facing several potential primary opponents but he said Friday that he looks forward to the fight, even in the face of growing unease from party activists and leaders about his re-election chances.
Doolittle was re-elected by a slim three-percentage-point margin last year even though his district is among the most conservative in California. Charlie Brown, the Democrat who challenged Doolittle last year, formally announced his candidacy for a rematch Friday and already leads the incumbent in fundraising.
Okay, all together now:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
There! That felt good, didn’t it?

I’m surprised he didn’t call them ferrets. Maybe Ghouliani would have come to his district to help out.
PW – you are cooking!
Yes.
Thems are damn cute weasels in the pix!
Run Larr-, oh crap it’s John Doolittle? Shouldn’t he be in jail already?

All Republicans are weasels, but all weasels are not Republicans.
Bwhahahahaaa….!!! Run, Doolittle…
aren’t those little weasels the cutest things ever!

Ferrets are a bit cuter, imho. When I was in junior high school, I worked in a pet store that had a ferret named the Fonz. He had free roam of the place.

Weasels are way better than Republicans. They are weasels being weasels – very cute, I may add. Republicans are being Republicans – not very cute, I may add. My vote is for the weasels. I don’t think Republicans come up to them.

Gawd, what am I going to do tomorrow? Fllipping back and forth from the Senate grilling Petraeus, replayed live coverage of 9/11 (which I suggest people watch like a mystery: listen for the first moment when Andrea Mitchell at 10:15 or so in the morning nails Al Qaeda and then the meme never changes) and liveblogging at the lake. Oh, what a beautiful day it will be!

Continuity: When The Dude is in the bathtub smoking a joint with all of the candles lit, the Nihilists come in and throw the ferret in the tub with him. There are four candles in the corner to the left of The Dude. When The Dude starts thrashing around he puts three of the four candles out with the water and when it cuts away then goes back to him, the three candles that were out are lit and the one candle that was still lit is out.
I had to google that to figure it out. I never saw that movie, I guess I’m going to have to rent it.

Back to Larry Craig. He needs to fight this charge. He should demand a trial by jury. With cameras in the courtroom. And a parade of fellow Congressmen declaring that they’re not gay. And his adopted children standing up for him as the son explains why he keeps being charged with hitting women and his daughter explains her vandalism. And I want a reenactment of him picking toilet paper off the floor of a public bathroom. And a quirky explanation from him about why exactly someone would do that. And then I want him found ‘not guilty’ so that he can run for re-election. As the ‘family values’ candidate.

Couple late winters ago I was walking in the woods and came across a young ermine who had popped up out of his hole. He was sooooo cute. And then I remembered the stories trappers tell – that when you set one free, they may actually turn back and attack you.
And people around here regularly blame fishers for their missing cats, though everything I’ve seen says fishers only rarely attack other carnivores. Could be, or could be they don’t want to admit how many coyotes we have.
TexBetsy @ 91
I’m not suprised because not all patients discuss the risks of medications with both their Doctor AND their pharmacists. The doctor have a basic idea of the side effects of the most common drugs he perscribes and the pharmacist should have the information on hand for bad combinations of drugs. (which can and does happen.) I work in a pharmacy and i’m a pharmacy tech that does that, but i’d hate to be in a neighborhood with out that kind of teamwork between local healthcare.
If we doubt anything or we find somethign that doesn’t react well, we change it. There’s also allergy issues which if it flags? We ask the patients about it to be absolutely sure. Way too many factors to get something wrong, but for the absolute essentials? We work on it, and then bend over backward to ensure the patient safety. We know these people, they’re our friends and neighbors. Lifelong, in the case of two of the other techs i work with.
Edit: I do however, have issue with idiot Big Pharma for not testing their drugs completely before rushing them out to market. Hence the problems with so many more medications. There’s always rare, adverse reactions–but there’s no excuse for not testing(and refining) enough to ensure the safety of as many as possible.
If you can, check in right tonight with AirAmerica:

Oh, my, my, my, my, my….and who, pray tell was President of Texas A&M until recently…why, non other than Secretary of Defense, Gates:
http://www.chron.com/disp/stor…..13551.html
“Among the findings in the report was a discrepancy between inventory records and the actual inventory of toxic vials. Three were missing, the report said. Davis said an investigation on that item was continuing. The labs, he said, had some 35,000 vials.
“We have received no information that this is nothing other than inventory issue,” he said. “We believe it is that.”
Davis said the CDC does not recommend fines, but that the federal Department of Health and Human Services has asked A&M to propose a fine. The school suggested $10,000, he said.
Overall research at the school was not likely to be affected by problems, Davis said, noting that it accounted for less than one-half of 1 percent of the $500 million in research conducted by the university.
“If we have embarrassment and concern I would think it’s among our scientific colleagues who understand the complexity of these programs,” Davis said.
Word that workers were exposed to the toxic agents was disclosed first by an Austin-based bioweapons watchdog group called The Sunshine Project, which was researching universities seeking a new National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility. Texas A&M had been among the applicants for the homeland security project.“
Hellloooooo!!!!
TexBetsy @ 91
That still begs the question of what to do about a growing and serious safety problem. According to the study authors, regulatory issues may be at the heart of the problem.
“I think it’s very clear that we need to spend more money, more people, and we need more authority and more independence for the FDA drug safety program,” Moore said.
There are many things for which I will always despise this administration but the deliberate destruction of regulatory agencies is definitely one of them.

I would too, that’s one of way to many alphabet agencies connected with pharamcy. Crazy amount of regulations in order to do something as simple as getting a perscription for an infection. In most cases they work, i give it that. But whistleblowing and being proactive about drug issues? Has been silent the last 10 years, and that was before i fell into pharmacy as job. I’d like to know how many people have become addicted to pain killers. The drug companies knew exactly what they were doing. Normal, everyday people who would never take an illegal drug suddenly find themselves to be addicted.
I can surely understand how that might happen but the attitude on the part of *so* many people that meds can/will solve all their problems is what blows my mind. Maybe it’s partly my age and growing up in an era before there was a drug for everything and anything. Having parents who were “suffer in silence” and “suck it up and keep on going” types certainly was an influence. Common sense tells me…………the less drugs ya take, the lower the risk for interactions/adverse effects.
And one thing I’d semi-seriously like to know……..why the h*ll do all the ones I *do* have to take have the side effect of dry mouth? Multiple that a few times and ya send a good part of the day in the bathroom b/c of fluid intake. ;-(

OMG! that’s just awful!

That works for me, because then I can get my kicks in on Joe Lieberman again, since he and Haddassah are such good buddies with BigPharma. And their ads are so “effective” don’t you think?

Well, today, he interjected that it was all about getting immunity for telecom companies who were about to withdraw their complicity for the program. Now, accordingly, they want “cover” retroactively.

I’m sure I’ll be EPU’d but OxyContin is a good example of what I was talking about above. It is a good medication for a very specific kind of patient, but when it came on the market, some doctors who didn’t understand what it was started prescribing it for usual pain which had not been treated any other way. They gave it to people who had not tried other kinds of treatment, just because it was long-acting and supposedly more convenient. I’m sure they thought it was fine, and that is the pharmaceutical companies’ fault.
Re antidepressants, I would offer the same thing. There are many folks who really can’t do without them but I know they are prescribed as a panacea by Internists without a suggestion of other treatment for depression. They require management just like cardiac meds.
Did someone say Little Feat?
LoudounLib @ 200
Yeah!!

Yup! And double yup on Haddassah (by the way I would love some interrogation of specifically what she is pushing by way of drugs and big meds.

Got to see Charlie Brown speak a couple of times and he’s the real deal. I cannot say enough good stuff about this guy.
Almost feel sorry for Doolittle and the trouncing he’s gonna get.
zennurse @ 199
Coming from a “medical family” with an orientation in mental health, I get a little pissy when I first heard that internists prescribed antidepressant. Like mental illness is not a real illness that requires a spec*alist/psychiatric treatment.

You know if there had been a single real instance where all of this intrusive and unconstitutional spying on us had stopped a terrorist attack they would be blaring it from the rooftops. They certainly have not hesitated to give credit erroneously for stopping attacks to these intelligence gathering activities in the past.

….GordonM….
Major depression (recurrent) is a disabling biological disorder in which symptoms correlate with disruptions in cerebral function (demonstrable on functional MRI scans).
One in five americans will meet diagnostic criteria for a single episode of major depression in their lifetime. Those who have had three separate and distinct episodes (of two weeks duration or longer- separated by at least six months) of major depression have a near 100% chance of future episodes.
Net US annual productivity loss form depression exceeds that from cardiac disease.
With each episode, the severity and frequency of future episodes increases.
For single episodes of major depression of mild to moderate severity, anti-depressants are as effective as psychotherapy.
Patients with moderate, severe, or recurrent major depression do best with medications and psychotherapy – that combo is the current “gold standard” for treatment of depression and other mood disorders.
[Current studies indicate that the variety of psychotherapy may be irrelevant. Exploratory psychotherapy (which includes what your sensitively describe as “figuring out what the friggin problem is”) is no more or less effective than cognitive-behavioral therapy.]
For patients with recurrent major depression (or single episodes which are “severe” or “severe with psychotic features), psychotherapy alone is ineffective.
For these patients, ideological prescriptions to “figure out what the friggin problem is” sans medication are simply death sentences for some who mistake such afactual assertions for rational bioloogical assessments.
Recent proof of this fact may be disinterred from the increased mortality – that’s dead people, for the ideologues among us – observed with decreased rates of antidepressants in teens.
With decreased antidepressant use, teen suicide rates increased.
Suicide rates decrease with antidepressant treatment.
Of course, for those inured to death by ideology, this is irrelevant.
Oh – and if you think I’m overly harsh:
peer-group rejection of medical care for the medical disease that is depression is the most powerful prediction that a suffering person will not seek (or will reject) effective treatment.
And one of five people you meet will have depression episodes in their lifetimes.
Some will have severe and/or recurrent major depression.
For these people, ill-informed opinions rejecting anti-depressants offer at best a sure route to misery and at worst a lethal prescription.
But hey – that’s what ideologies are all about, right?
Denying the empirical facts that don’t fit with a cherished theory.
Worked well enout in Iraq, right?

More about today’s illusive Petraeus report, from David Swanson:
http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/?q=node/26632
P.S. CTuttle – In case you missed him, I wanted to mention that Hawaii’s Rep. Abercrombie stood out from the crowd today (Swanson agreed, it appears). Abercrombie managed to mention the Hunt Oil deal with the Kurds, and to call our presence in Iraq an “indefinite occupation” in the comments he made; he didn’t ask a question, just made two pointed comments (he really seems to get it), and then yielded the rest of his time to the newest Democrat on the committee, Rep. Castor of FL (a nice gesture).

I agree with all of what you said. But I believe therapy more than the 15 minute once every other month that HMOS were so happy to give unless they thought a patient was suicidal is better. There has to be supervision. Lives are complicated that way. And I think many will not take drugs unless a therapist is on their case.
LoudounLib @ 234
This is flatly untrue. All the repugs waited for this and voted many times.
It’s truly absurd.
Peterr @ 235

THANK YOU. For personal reasons too long and, um, depressing to enumerate, I have a REAL problem with people who glibly dismiss the pharmacology of mental illness.
I hope Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen will take a moment to distance herself from Ted Bundy.

pssst, TRex is upstairs…
And Kirk, don’t forget there are other reasons for sessions other than the usual psychotherapy crap that are terribly important, like helping patinets overcome stigma that really does exist, help with symptoms when the drugs don’t always kick in etc etc. I hate HMOs thinking they could just prescribe antidepressants and be done with it.
The Sunday New York Times: “A little over three years after Pan Am Flight 103 blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland, Fred D. Thompson provided advice to a colleague about one of his law firm’s new clients: The man representing the two Libyan intelligence officials charged in the terrorist bombing.”
More from the article: “Karen Hanretty, a spokeswoman for his presidential campaign, said that Mr. Thompson had no authority to decide which clients the firm represented. His work on behalf of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the deposed Haitian leader — a phone call tMr. Thompson has faced questions about his work for two other Arent Fox clients. He initially denied working on behalf of a family planning group seeking to overturn an abortion counseling ban at federally financed clinics, but billing records showed that he spent nearly 20 hours on the matter. o John Sununu, then the White House Chief of Staff — has also become fodder for his rivals because of human-rights abuses during Mr. Aristide’s presidency.”

oddmommy – you are most welcome. Dicouraging competent psychopharmacology is as cruel and ignorant as discouraging chemotherapy for treatable malignancies.
When I see cruelty, I’m not quiet.
mui – thanks – and I completely agree with you on both counts. The studies I’m familiar with use psychotherapy with adequate (weekly) frequency, adequate length (60 ish minutes), adequate duration (ongoing in recurrent disease).
And fully trained psychotherapists (not any form of trainee): MD/PhD/MSW level training and completion of training hours.
mui @ 242
mui @ 248
HMO’s that do this for recurrent, moderate, or severe depression fail to provide effective treatment for potentially lethal disease.
This is inexusable.
For depression of more than mild severity – or any recurrent depressions – meds and psychotherapy are the gold standard – the most effective known therapy.
A famous California HMO offers very comfortable outpatient jobs – with caseloads of around 1,000 patients.
How to “manage” their symptoms is up to the doctor, of course.
And after three years, the doctors start to make partner in the famous “non-profit” HMO.
I “managed” by deciding not to do that sort of work.
If my psychiatric colleagues did the same, the HMO’s couldn’t get away with this crap.
kirk murphy @ 250
No Thank you. I think you are such a great asset to this online community.
I just have to say I believe mental illness is so complicated, sociologically, historically personally and otherwise. I don’t think one cure or another is a cure. Because there are too many issues. Although antidepre***** have been a leap forward for many, we all know it’s not the end all. I don’t like someone making lithium jokes. (HAHAHA *knee slapper* Once heard al franken make one) I don’t like people saying that new treatments are all new, because I once read in one my parents textbooks that the Romans physicans sent manic/or depressed patients to baths (that were later found to be high in lithium content.) Glibness we don’t need on the subject of mental illness. It affects many of us (especially and weirdly those who are in mental health families.)
