I’ve had this membership renewal envelope sitting in my “need to get to” pile, and because I’ve been a loyal supporter of my local PBS stations for decades — more or less since the 1960s and 1970s, when you and Robert MacNeil started PBS’ excellent news program, and then expanded it to a full hour — I would have taken care of that sooner or later. I think a public news programs that attempts to remain free of the ideological spin of its corporate owners is extremely important to our country. However, I’ve just moved that packet into the “probably not going to do this anymore” pile, and I wanted you to know why.
Your NewsHour has a segment in which you solicit the perspectives of a nominal Democrat and a nominal Republican, and I suppose that’s okay. As a Democrat, I respect Mr. Shields and can almost tolerate David Brooks when he gets depressed about what a mess his party has made of the country. It’s the only time he sounds sincere. And I realize that with PBS’ more ideologically conservative management these days, it was inevitable that having someone on your show who does little more than shill for the White House would be seen as needed to balance Mr. Shields’ defense of the Democratic point of view. After all, that is what Fox News calls “fair and balanced,” only they are far more blatant about it.
But then, I don’t send money to Fox News, so it’s a reasonable question whether I should be sending money to PBS to support NewsHour when it behaves the way Fox News does. You see, I know about Mr. Brooks’ comments on Friday night comparing liberal/progressive bloggers — I’m one of them — to Osama bin Laden. Of course, he was very subtle about it — he’s good at that — but the message was clear. And since you, Jim, are a good newsman, I know that you understand that the sliming of liberal bloggers is a common tactic of the right wing. If your staff has done its homework, you’ll also know that Mr. Brooks, who frequently carries the White House talking points onto your show, did not come up with this comparison all by himself. You know by now that this exact same comparison popped up on CNN, and Fox News and all over the right wing blogs — just as though it came right out of Ed “I’m the new Karl Rove” Gillespie’s propaganda mill.
So I’m sitting here wondering why I should send in my membership renewal. Although I expect David Brooks to be little more than a shill for White House talking points, I also know you frequently interject your comments on these segments, and you could easily have asked David to clarify whether he really meant that people like me are the same as people who engage in mass murder by flying airplanes into buildings, whether you think hundreds of thousands of Americans who regularly write, read and comment on progressive blogs really are fanatical religious zealots who think it’s okay to behead people to make a point, and whether you think I personally think it’s okay to plant road side bombs on Iraq highways to blow the arms and legs off American servicemen. But you didn’t say a word, except to compliment your guests on what a swell job they did. You just let Brook’s calculated slime slide onto your show, without a response.
So I’m thinking that if you want me to send in my membership renewal, you owe a lot a people a very sincere apology. You see, Jim, while Mr. Brooks was in prep school, I was in Vietnam; I’ve actually been in a war; Mr. Brooks can ask his friends to look it up: US54494387. And while I did help the US Army kill another country’s people just because my commander in chief said we should kill those Vietnamese “insurgents,” just as our servicemen are doing today in Iraq, I really wasn’t expecting my PBS station to insinuate that I and thousands of men and women like me who served and who also participate on progressive blogs are mass murderers.
I’d appreciate a response at your earliest convenience. Thank you.
Respectfully,
scarecrow

Good morning, firepups!
Way to go, scarecrow! Whiners and shills shrink before proof of service in the military…
This post cries out for the Spotlight. Thank you Scarecrow, I’m sure you speak for many here.
excellent letter, scarecrow…
Well said Scarecrow!
egregious is right, let’s make sure Jim gets Scarecrow’s letter.
SPOTLIGHT
Excellent letter. And if I may be allowed to contribute early morning snark; I wonder if Mr. Lehrer is actually capable of reflecting on a thought-provoking letter.
Perfect, Scarecrow.
Well done, scarecrow.
The PBS renewal is also in my “probably not going to do” pile as well.
Scarecrow,
Most excellent!
wow. brilliant post, i especially like the ending.
Kevster @ 9
make sure you tell them why!
Let me rephrase that:
I wonder if Mr. Lehrer is capable of thoughtful reflection.
Or has any role other than to run a Potemkin village style ‘news show.’
Lehrer, as a Marine, ought to appreciate your appeal.
Not to argue with Scarecrow – the Administration has set up a puppet state at PBS – but you know, in sympathy to Jim Lehrer, I wonder how he feels when he looks into his shaving mirror every morning. If I had this amazing history and had this great news show that had become just a PR organ for the Administration, I’m not sure what would make me go to work there – besides the money…
*snap*
Thank You for watching what I cannot any longer stomach.
OT
about ten minutes until the DHS hearing CSPAN 1
Mr Brooks is on the Newshour why? Has he ever been right about Iraq, or how well Bush’s economy is? Why have a pundit on who is always wrong about his predictions?
Is it because Dave has White House access? Heck all the Right Wing “cough” Journalists have access they are all on message with White House talking points.
PBS could save a lot of money if they just called Karl and asked him what the talking points of the day are on any given issue.
Reporters report Lehrer. If I want mindless repetion of talking points I can get that on any of the news channels Mr Brooks does not have any special insight.
After all I can find his special insight repeated on all the other newschannels!
Scarecrow, this is an out-of-the-ballpark post. WOW and THANK YOU. I became so angry listening to the NewsHour Friday that people in other cars probably thought I was psychotic, talking to my voices.
Bravo! Well said!
Scarecrow, right on target and firing for effect. Bill Moyers is the only decent journalist left on FPBS (Formerly PBS). The Public in PBS has been hijacked. Nothing left to do but flame their worthless neo-con chicken hawks. Or just ignore them.
hearing on terrorist threats the last six years soon to start, CSPAN 1
How can Mr Brooks claim to be an objective reporter if he never fact checks the White House talking points he recites? Dave is Judy Miller without a dress.
OT: MSNBC reporting a truck explosion in northern Mexico has killed 37. Truck was carrying mining explosives.
This comes days after the Bush administration paves the way for Mexican trucks to have full access to US roads (per NAFTA) over the objections of many in Congress and Labor. It appears Bushco wants to do for truck safety in this country what it has done for mine safety.
Agreed, I gave our local PBS a donation this year. Shortly wished I hadn’t. Small chance next year, even for the Dr. Who series they carry.
Richt fricken on!! I agree with you 100%.
Well said, well written.
Thank You.
Elliott @ 22
Calling all live bloggers….get ready please.
Amen, Scarecrow. I have always loved your posts, but you have outdone yourself with this one. Please let us all know what response, if any, you receive from Mr. Lehrer.
FWIW, I have stopped donating to my local NPR station (temporarily I hope) because I simply cannot stomach the degree to which Morning Edition and All Things Consider toe the Republican Party line. Recently, I have heard stories that suggest NPR may be improving, but I’m holding out for more evidence…
things come undone— it’s PBS’ way of having balance. A seemingly moderate conservative point of view to balance the flabby liberal one of Mark Shields. It’s all pretty watered down, with each of them most of the time hastening to agree with the other, until Brooks lets slip one of his patented, passive-aggressive sideways swipes. Shields is no match for Brooks’ smiling hostility. Brooks is truly execrable.
Brooks is a wrong wing zealot.
Have you ever heard McNeil Lehrer report fairly or at all on the Israeli Palestinian issue. How unbiased have they really been all of these years? I have been listening for many years and I have either missed these reports or they are non-existent.
I have to agree with things come undone, why would any self-respecting news program want a talking head that has been so miserably wrong on so many issues?
We need term limits for pundits! Arg!
While we’re at it, lets pull “Cokie” Roberts into the mess. She was on NPR very first this morning doing a pre-Petraeus testimony sliming of the Dems. Her slanted political opinions make me vomit. But really, it just highlights how bad NPR is these days.
Lieberman is bleeting about Islamofascism and the Homeland. And Chertoff is looking on with admiration, disgusting
Elliott @ 12
I did. No contributions to either PBS or my local NPR station until Btooks is gone. I have had it with PBS/NPR’s move to the right.
Lieberman referencing Osama’s recent message. Boy doesn’t that make a nice backdrop on which to open these particular hearings.
“It is a shot across our bow!” -JL dramatically
Elliott @ 22
You can bet your ass that Lieberman will use this to drum up support for a pre-emptive attack on Iran. Here it comes folks the radicals are going to turn up the heat on Iran to scorching. Lieberman will lead the way….
I suggest doing as we do. Instead of sending money to Maine public Radio as we have done for years we have now, for the last four years, sent the money to Democracy Now.
We will not, and can not, support right wing radio in whatever guise they cloak them selves.
phred @ 28
after almost 20 years of support, i stopped supporting npr in 2002. democracy now! is far, far superior and operates solely on listener donations – no corporate sponsors. strongly recommend supporting amy goodman’s democracy now! as an alternative for npr.
Place your bets how many times will Lieberman say Iran? How many unsubstantiated claims will Lieberman make?
Well said, Scarecrow! I got goosepimples reading your letter, we have much in common, you & I.
The difference is you can retain your civility and speak calmly and rationally about these matters, whereas I am forced to turn sharply on my heel and keep my mouth firmly shut, for I cannot trust myself to respond.
Susan Collins has the weirdest ideolect I’ve ever heard. It’s not a Maine accent. What is it?!
Wow! Right between the eyes. That’s a masterful letter…be interested if you get anything other than a canned response…
(Morning, all!)
Scarecrow, so very well done …and it precisely expresses WHY my renewal long ago ended up in the “guess I won’t be doing this anymore” pile. We’ve added satellite radio to our growing mass of electronic dodads because we live in a rural area of NYS dominated by CONSERVATIVE RADIO…so, with my Sirius and my XM I can get Garrison, Wait,Wait Don’t Tell Me, and AAR so that’s where my monthly check goes. And, while we’re on the subject SLIME is the perfect term for David…
Great post. I never give money to the fake public stations like NYC and PBS. They do some good work and they do some awful stuff. Why do they do a Wall Street Week in Review and not a Labor Week in Review. The politics of public broadcast are horribly slanted toward the right wing capitalist wealth agenda. They pitch to the shareholder class with all their feel good travel shows, cooking shows, arts programming. Screw them.
Just a question…
Why do some posters who are headliners remain hidden behind nicknames like Trex, Scarecrow, Pach whilst others use their real names like Jane and Christy?
I understand that when you hold a position which might be threatened if you posted your real name and “radical” views a nick makes sense. But more and more politcal bloggers use their real names. What’s the deal here?
lieberman is such a demogogue and a bigot.
JL: today we are in the early days of a long war against islamist extremism.
scarecrow, this is an excellent letter! Leher has been letting Brooks get away with his blatant right wing propaganda for far too long. It’s time the liberals, progressives, Democrats begin defunding PBS.
Scarecrow, Newshour is so terrible I never even turn it on anymore. I had been refusing to send PBS any money for some time. Then I found myself in the middle of an excellent Bill Moyers program when they appealed for funds. I responded. They do pay attention to what brings in the dollars so if your not going to boycott altogether I suggest targeting the shows that are worthy of support.
DemocracyNow! is the best new and public affairs presentation and should be supported, NOT PBS. Amy Goodman is a great journalist and she always gives the right an opportunity to participate, but they often refuse to show. Cowards that they are.
Laura Doty @ 19
This is where I’m very very happy I do not listen to the radio… :-/
It is perhaps a “small” thing, but what’s been done to PBS is emblematic of so many of the ills in our country right now.
(Psst, Laura, friend me again? I had to do a new facebook acct after the b*stards closed my other one, and your account settings don’t let me send you a msg…)
I’m sorry, but soon as it became clear that you buy into this Osama bin Laden hoax, you lost me.
Jim Lehrer joined the borg ages ago. Get with the pogrom.
selise @ 45
So far, it’s not long enough to get anyone from Bush’s family to serve. I wonder how long it will have to be for that to happen?
Bill Moyers jumped back in, I suspect, because he sensed a real tilt to the right and he had the imprimatur to make a dent.
Bill Moyers is a Studs Turkel and a real national treasure. How can anyone even compare a blowhard shill like BoBo to these giants of journalism?
I have spent the last few years discussing middle east issues with several young men from Afghanistan studying here in the US on Fulbright Schlarships.
They have shared that just after 9/11 the Afghani government asked the Bush administration to send documented proof that OBL was involved with 9/11. The Bush administration has yet to do so. What does anyone know about this claim?
I wish Juan Cole or another reliable person could interpret what OBL said in those tapes released just after 9/11, where the Bush administration and Mainstream News organizations claimed that OBL was in full compliance with the attack. If these interpretations are anything like the interpretations of Iraninan President Ahminijads comments about Israel we know that they are bullshit. Juan Cole has stated that the misrepresentation of what Ahminijad has said about Israel is way off the mark and have been manipulated by the “cakewalk in Iraq” zealots.
Good Morning Kathleen! One last thing from EPU land and then I must go to sleep.
Kathleen @ 39
things come undone says:
I want Holy Joe to answer if he really thinks the Jews in Israel feel safe knowing that American troops are in Iraq when Ossama is in Pakistan.
Pakistan is a country that already has Nuclear missles unlike Iran. But it is so unstable thanks to Al Quieda that they almost declared Martial law a month ago.
Condi convinced Pakistan not to declare martial law, probably because it would make Bush look bad!
Of course if there is a midnight coup in Pakistan and a launch which could happen at any moment, I wonder if Holy Joe and Bush will admit that letting Ossama go free while we invaded Iraq was a huge HUGE MISTAKE!
things come undone @ 18
You obviously didn’t get the memo. Bobo Brooks is a VSP(Very Serious Person). Those inside the Beltway know what’s best for those outside. Why do you question the elite. Don’t you know your place?
P.S. Yes, that is snark.
Well stated Scarecrow…I live in Tacoma, Washington and have the dubious honor of purchasing a ticket for tonight’s talk by David Brooks titled, “How Does Being American Shape Us?” I am in search of one great question to ask Mr Brooks…any suggestions?
Thus spake Bobo Brooks.
Huzza, dear scarecrow! That was spot on.
However, PBS is not the only thoroughly co-opted media dumpster. Try “Bobo Brooks Does the New American Social Contract” in the increasingly laughable NY Times.
My Brooks gag-o-meter was tripped by David Brooks’ “thoughts” on American health care reform in what is the best cat litterbox liner in town … NYT.
I sent to my email circuit –
=======================
In 1942, Franklin Roosevelt imposed wage controls on American companies. Unable to lure workers with higher salaries, many employers began offering health insurance and other benefits. Then, in 1952, officials at the Internal Revenue Service ruled that these benefits wouldn’t count as taxable income.
And so, accidentally, the modern American health and pension system was born.
And so was born Bobo Brooks to tell us how everything is just swell. Just gotta tinker with the screw threads here; jest a teche …
selise @ 45
This radical has got to go!
Most of these talking heads, Lehrer being no exception need to get out of their posh offices and bubbles and see how 90% of America lives and what matters to them.
They are way too cosy with the Beltway crowd.
These “anchors” are basically repulsive self promoters, newsreaders for millions. The whole mainstream media is a disgrace in this country.
Scarecrow, great letter.
Brooks is like Friedman, a pampered tool who spouts off mean spirited tripe.
We know Brooksie is a flaming turd.
Friedman’s latest has him declaring that Iraqis don’t deserve American troops because they ‘don’t love their children enough’.
Yes, we love our children so much we’ve been sacrificing them at a pace of two a day for four almost five years because of the King’s vanity.

Chertoff just said we haven’t suffered another terrorist attack in six years, Uh, what about the still unsolved Anthrax attacks of October 2001?!
Chertoff just doesn’t think it’s luck that’s kept us from another attack. Didn’t sound like he had much more than his gut to go on to back that up.
Hey Crow,
A beacon of truth you are sir!!!!!
valletta @ 41
It is a strange, choppy sort of Katharine Hepburnesque cadence that I can’t quite ever really grasp.

SanderO @ 48
Amy Rocks and NPR and PBS block mainstream stations from carrying her.
Norman Finklestein is another truth teller and he has suffered enormously for attempting to be fair and balanced on the I/P issue. He was denied tenure at DePaul and recently resigned We all need to support Norman and his search for a new job, or travelling the nation telling the truth…whatever he decides to do.
Great letter and post!
Way to improve an overcast Monday morning!
Plus, give someone else a chance over at the old “News” hour. B and S are no longer “balanced,” and there’s a lot more to the Internets than Left Blogistan. I think Ed the Shopkeepers are likely threatened by a growing awareness of this and the fact that they appear to be nearing or past their ’sell by’ dates.
Also: newsflash, not everyone is a terrorist, however rewarding the war on terror may be.
GSD @ 64
That’s funny. I wrote “ideolect” and it was changed to “dialect”. ??? I didn’t know the moderator changed words..?? [Mod: changed back. Sorry, my bad]
GSD @ 64
let’s hope Maine dumps her
Great letter, Scarecrow,
I can only assume it’s “real” and you’ll be forwarding it to Mr. Lehrer (cc to Mr. Brooks) ASAP, if you haven’t done so already. I’d only ask that you let us know when and how Mr. Lehrer responds.
Elliott @ 62
Chertoff just doesn’t think it’s luck that’s kept us from another attack. Didn’t sound like he had much more than his gut to go on to back that up.
Notice how he blithely takes credit for arrests made by the security forces of other countries?
Oh yeah, we also stopped the geniuses who were gonna wipe out the poor un-armed forces at Fort Dix, what with their clever disguises as pizza guys.
We are setting up a nuclear forensics center. per Chertoff
Man, I wouldn’t trust this government’s analysis on anything, what happened to my country?
OT – Crawl on CSPAN (I have muted Chertoff) “Larry Craig files papers to withdraw his guilty plea”
9/11 took place during the Bush administrations watch.
Then there is a successful group effort by the Bush administration to out a CIA Undercover agent whose job it is is to follow and stop the flow of WMD’s. Insane…talk about enemies from within. The Bush administration fits the bill.
Caw! Caw! Great letter and post, Scarecrow. Maybe Mr. Lehrer should be informed that he has more to lose than money–credibility and an audience come to mind.
Elliott @ 71
Hijacked by right wing radicals
Lieberman hearts Chertoff
That’s Ed AND The Shopkeepers

Nothing like horning in on another country’s good investigative work!
and the Fort Dix Pizza Delivery Attack is my personal fav among all the slapstick plots HOMELAND Security has blessfully saved us from.
Would letters to our local PBS stations be appropriate? I mean, they actually have a choice, don’t they, in terms of what programs they air; I would think if they knew that people were refusing to give them money because of Lehrer, it might make them think twice about putting it into their schedule.
another faux journalist…Kelli!
PS *uck Liarman and his gruesome business…time to call his office and demand party switch to gooperville.
F–k the mainstream media and all its acolyates – shut the tv off and read the blogs on the internet thats where i get my news now anything else is all corporate filtered bullshit- no freedom of the press no freedom !

Correct word is actually idiolect — the accent a particular individual has unique to them.
peanutbutter @ 84
No big deal! I just didn’t know that you did that :)
[Mod: strictly spellchecker, not changing the meanings of words.]
Nothing to see here folks. Move along to the next thread.
I sent a similar letter to the PBS Ombudsman. I hope that tens of thousands of similar letters will remind them of the expectations of their exceptionally informed viewership.
The Brooks/Shields Hour desperately needs refurbishment. Mr. Lehrer treats it like a retreat from the demands of his news hour, as if it were a comfy corner with old friends by the fire. Judy Woodruff does the same, with even more evident relief on her face, when she substitutes for Mr. Lehrer.
In reality, it’s more like a creaky porch: Mr. Lehrer walks gently so as not to topple the roof or step through the floorboards. Mr. Shields offers a weak tea version of progressive commentary, and Mr. Brooks is, well, Mr. Brooks, a penny-loafered version of Bill Safire’s hobnailed booted GOP blatherer. He imagines himself an intellectual and cultural historian who somehow deserves his perch at the NYT. He wears more mature clothing than Tucker Carlson, and when he’s not trying to fill Safire’s size twelves with his size nines, he can say observant things, but he’s never not trying to fill Safire’s blood-stained shoes.
Thank You Scarecrow
Even the stealth shill David Gergen was tolerable compared to this little maggot Brooks. Mark Shields is Alan Colmes in a fat suit.
I sued to read the NYT at breakfast at the local coffee shop. Stopped that. Can’t stand most of their op ed writers BoBo being right up there after the departed Safire. Krugman is a gem as is Frank Rich and occasionally Kristoff. The rest of the Op Eds are basically a waste and the times is such a shill for the stick holder class it is pathetic. They have entire sections of their paper devoted to “consumerism” homes, real estate, decorating, eating, automobiles, vacations and electronic gadgets
Wow! That was intense. I’m not renewing either, but I’m going to keep my twelve part series of Joseph Campbell, if that’s ok?
Thank you for your service, scarecrow, all of them!
Thank you, Scarecrow. That needed to be said, and you did so directly and clearly. I hope Mr. Lehrer reads it.
Good Morning Scarecrow.
Terrific post.
I DO watch Lehrer rather faithfully, hoping, show by show, that it will turn around. Some things about it are still pretty good, but I fear it’s on a permanent negative slide. Sad.
Brooks in particular is stunningly obnoxious. Watching his face is a good lesson in spotting “tells”. He’s very smooth, seemingly simpering and weak-kneed, but the filth that comes out in his spews are amazing. You’re absolutely right. Lehrer knows better, and should haul him up short. He should NOT be getting away with it.
At the moment, FDL & HuffPo plus Jon Stewart and KeithO, with a dash of Colbert, are the main news sources in this house. I only check broadcast MSM & newspapers to see how they measure up. The answer to that quest is, unfortunately, not very well.
Who feels safer when Lieberman (who deferred from serving in the Vietnam war because he had small children or some other BS) is the head of the Senate Homeland Security Committee? This guy is more than willing to send other peoples children and relatives into an unecessary war that he promoted.,but uwilling to put his own ass on the line or encourage his children or relatives to do so. What a bloody hypocrite!
On the Diane Rehm show they are presently discussing Pakistan and at 11 John Dean will lbe on. Not able to link from this computer.
What a brilliant way to say this. This needs to be seen by everyone. Thank you.
Excellent, Thank you.
And while you’re at it have PBS get rid of Wayne Dyer and Suze Ormond.
I know this will create a great programming hole, but it might encourage someone to put up the money and talent required for television of actual interest.
Right on cue today, CNN et al. are tantalizing us with the earth-shaking news that there’s ANOTHER beenlaidin tape, just newly discovered!!!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooh!
C’mon guys. Give us a break.
fool me agin, ‘uh, -um-, -ah, foo, foo, foolmuh…
i’m gittin’ too old fer this stuff… *sigh*
David Ehrenstein @ 96
second!
Wow. Outrageous comments from Brooks. And an excellent letter, Scarecrow.
I stopped giving to NPR and PBS during the Clinton impeachment. The head is this spook Kevin Klose, or something. Why give to the CIA? Isn’t that where my taxes go?
Senator from Vermont Live C-span 2
KICK ASS PAT!!!!!!
How about footnote 5 pgs., pp. 4-5 of Justice Kennedy’s decision Senator????
Loved the letter. And I sent my E-mail off yesterday to the News Hour. Asked that it be given to Mr. Leher too.
My mouth about dropped open when Mr. Brooks made that comment.
Nice letter, Scarecrow. I would encourage you and anyone writing to MSM culprits in Our National Disaster to remind them that dissent very much equals patriotism, not a proxy for our worst enemies. Throw in a TR quote.
I’d fight/kill/die for that!
Wonderful letter. Very well written. I hope you get a response.
However, I would not hold out hope that anyone there at News Hour would respond to someone named “scarecrow” (with all lower case letters, no less). I mean, I wouldn’t. I’d shitcan that letter without a second thought– “scarecrow”? like in Wizard of Oz? WOOSH! in the trash.
johnSwifty @ 90
We’re going to have to do something like Blue America and send our money only to the people/shows we think serve the country well. Anything Bill Moyers does — including the Cambell series — is worth supporting. But I’m tired of having the neocon boobs at CPB hide behind Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, the way Bush hides behind Petraeus.
Tim in SF @ 105
I gave them my identity. It’s in the number, and they know how to find it.
Great letter, scarecrow. I’m glad you wrote it and hope that Lehrer gives you a thoughtful response and a sincere apology.
I stopped sending PBS money three years ago and am on the verge of something similar with respect to NPR. I think the big market stations like Boston, New York, LA, Chicago and Seattle, should pull their financing and set up their own national news service, preferably located outside Washington. The current situation is simply unsustainable. I haven’t watched PBS news in years — I think the decline from my perspective started during the second Clinton administration, when Washington Week in Review got turned into a gossip column. That was the first favorite show I stopped watching. The news came shortly after. NPR is only marginally better.
I stopped subscribing, and I explained why.
Great letter indeed! We all need to make sure to let PBS know why we are tossing their donation forms in the trash. PBS will not be able to survive without us lefties. I can’t think of a single non-liberal that I know who ever watches PBS, let alone sends money to support the cause of “independent” broadcasting – it’s just too boring to catch their attention. Can we just send the money to Bill Moyers instead?
Also, that quote in question, about lefty bloggers and Bin Laden, carefully calculated talking point that it is, throws in the word “childish” to boot. Now this is really pissing me off. There is a book out by Diana West, published by the right-wing smear machine, titled, “The Death Of The Grown-up”… take a wild guess which side of the ideological isle she considers “grown-up.” It is part of the insidious black-ops culture war, and we need to bring it forth and counter it wherever it rears its ugly head. Otherwise, we will soon be hearing old couples at Denney’s commenting on how “childish” whoever the Democratic nominee is compared to the “grown-up” Republican, just like how people bought into the swift boating of John Kerry.
It seems to me that, because what we are up against is money and power, our best course of action is to be on top of this culture war. We have to remind everyone that the right-wing revisionist history of the 60’s and 70’s is not exactly as it happened. I mean, how many times have they gotten away with skewing the real facts about the Vietnam War – facts like how it was the United States who destabilized the area by illegally waging war in Cambodia – facts like Bush gone AWOL, or all the neocons avoiding the draft…its truly unbelievable what they have gotten away with!!! This has to be our front. My emotions are starting to get away with me, but what I am trying to say is that this business about the left being “childish” is such BS, and it is based on the idea that the hippies just want to have fun and love and peace unicorns, while the “grown-ups” are busy fighting terrorism. I call this the “grow up and be scared” tactic, and the way to counter it is to go back to the 60’s and 70’s and show them that it wasn’t always just a party, it wasn’t just about hedonism and free love – it was about freedom and liberty and equality and speaking truth to power and all these ideas that are supposed to be what “America” stands for, yet, over and over, our government uses the ever-so-effective device of drumming up an “enemy” to perpetuate the military-industrial-congressional and, of late, -penal complex to keep the money flowing in those circles. In fact, while the chickenhawk neocons who had the means and the connections to avoid serving their country were at home building up their careers and their fortunes, regular, good folks like scarecrow and thousands of others were over there definitely NOT partying, rather, GROWING UP by seeing first-hand how wrong a country can be to use its military might for an ideological conviction…so who is it that is really chasing rainbows and unicorns and flowers and candies? And who is it who is grown up enough to think independently and critically instead of blindly following a script? And who understands how prophetic George Orwell was, or how diversity is desirable while isolation causes stagnation and inbreeding, or how issues can be, you know, complicated… Just don’t let them label us “childish!!!”
I don’t mean to cast aspersions on your nome de plume. It’s a cool nickname (IMHO) if only due to the association with the movie. I’m merely speaking to the habit of mail room people (the ones who initially open, read, and route your letter) to dispose of mail that is not properly signed.
But maybe you’ll get lucky.
Great letter and great post, thank you! Unfortunately PBS has become just another repeater of the talking points handed out by the neoocn madmen at the White House.
If you look at the comments at the YouTube video clip of this pathetic Brooks segment on PBS there are many coments from the right wingnuts calling anyone that comments about Brooks in a negative manner a spokesperson for Osama. This is the new favorite attack line of bull for these fools.
Look. Regarding Lehrer, Bob Somerby has previously reminded us that Jim Lehrer is much more interested in his career as a novelist than his day job. What do you expect? That said, Jim Lehrer still should be ashamed of himself.
Fantastic post! The media takeover issue one of the most important ones we face. Without control of the message which the Killers currently have, the masses would never vote in these Constitution-haters in first place.
Support the troops and thank a vet. So thanks for your service, scarecrow, you rabid lamb, you.
Scarecrow, simply brill.
What a great letter — we’ve been discussing the changes to The Newshour in our house as well — things have definitely changed. The writing on this site always amazes me — clear, concise, humorous, and most often with supporting links. Thank you Scarecrow and thanks to Jane, Christy, TRex and … everyone who contibutes to Firedoglake.
I stopped watching The News Hour years ago when it dawned on me that Lehrer’s role was to invite his guests to practice their evasions. When your interviewee lies, “just reporting the news” means complicity with the deception.
You’re too kind to these clowns, Scarecrow. Otherwise, well done.
Heard that David Brooks comment when it initially aired on PBS….
Was very, very happy that you-all picked on that complete bullshit…
Your letter which more than adequately represents all of us lefty minions out here in the blogosphere is compelling and effective…
And kicked his ass completely…
The truly unfortunate part is that the right wing is getting what it really wants.
They started out trying to kill PBS/NPR with legislation. After the huge public outcry, they decided to take a different tack.
Instead of going for the throat, they went for the body blow in the form of changing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) board to slant much more conservative than it had been in the past. With Bush in office, it was an easily accomplishable task, as the board is appointed by the president for six year terms.
After changing the makeup of the board, edicts began from on high (Likely on directions from Rover’s Office of Nasty Nasty) to provide “balance”. This directly translates to more Republican propaganda on NPR/PBS.
And thus, they are getting us to do their dirty work for them. When we stop sending checks, they stop producing new shows, and focus on “balancing up” the old ones. They are killing PBS/NPR in a circuitous and effective fashion.
I don’t know the solution for the problem, however.
Excellently well done.
Bothering me more than the silly Brooks is the number of “scholar” guests from the Saban Institute at Brookings (e.g. O’Hanlon) and AIPAC-connected “think tanks”.
How about the number of times they give a platform to “scholars” from the Saban Institute at Brookings or other AIPAC/neocon
“think tanks”.
I quit listening to PBS a couple of years ago. I too used to be a donater and fan of PBS but it is just not worth it anymore..
I wonder how Rey Suarez feels about working on the Archer-Daniels Midland Hour. He really did a good job back in his NPR days ( before Juan Williams destroyed his show. ) When he came on Lehrer’s show, the light was gone from his eyes.
Public Broadcasting was a good idea, but this incarnation has been corrupted by corporate funding. Time to let it go, try again later.
