Mickey Kaus, Mark Kleiman and Kevin Drum have turned the pool area into a wonk swamp.
The taquitos are fabulous and I nabbed a free copy of Bob Harris’s book.
Wish you were here.

For some strange reason, the camera seems to looove bloggers. All you bloggers need to put photos up every chance you get. You’ve got fans.

Funny, but you guys don’t look like a bunch of teenagers who blog out of your parents’ basement. Those pictures have been photoshopped!
“…turned the pool area into a wonk swamp.”
That’s what me and Lahoma and some tight friends have here every summer night, practically. We even have a couple of token Republican pals who are regulars. Imagine. It’s gets lively. Swimming, margaritas, Mexican beer, Japanese lanterns and politics. Sometimes ’til dawn. Slight difference perhaps; our pool is bordered on three sides by hundreds of acres of cow pastures.
so, will the rabid flying lambs appear at midnight?
dilireus @ 19
Jane could be a teenager…
Tommy, Great news about Esten. When you don’t post for awhile some of us tend to worry.
dilireus @ 19
I was thinking the same thing.
For anyone who was following the Univision comments:
Univision: Q: What contributions can Hispanics make to the country?
Richardson: smattering of applause for a long speech
Dodd: good burst of applause for a short answer
Gravel: seems to be going the “we’re all human” route. Well received.
Edwards: Edwards has this habit of lifting his eyebrows and grinning — it takes away from his potential seriousness. Polite applause.
Kucinich: Why does Hillary smirk at him? Roars and cheers — again.
Obama: The man has no heat, not on this stage, not tonight. Better than average applause.
Clinton: Smiles as though she’s already been crowned. Lookin’ presidential. Smooooth. Big cheer at the end, as at the beginning but not throughout. Think she has some supporters there, a claque?
Conclusion: during the debate, Kucinich won the audience going away. Dodd was good. This audience was not what most of them expected.
Jonathan @ 18
A true repub crashing the party.
althespook @ 14
Well, never let it be said that the Hunts do not have the taste for high levels of risk.
Good evening gang
Hiya cc!! Welcome to the party. Someone get Jonathan a drink.

What do you mean? (see below, I came in for the last 2 minutes. Sigh.)
They expected maybe one-issue all-immigration-all-the-time or something?

I went to college with a girl whose grandmother lived across the lake from Old Man Hunt. They hated each other. The old lady, in a fit of picque(and lot of money), ordered up about 50 full grown trees to be planted on the shore of the lake so that she would not have to look at Hunt’s house every morning when she was taking her coffee.
Hi {{{Jane}}} !
A wonk swamp! What could go wrong?!
U Guys are so special. Thank you – more than you know… ;->
Ah. Birdland, by Weather Report, the one I was looking for.
Little known (and just made up) fact – this is the official music for the Snoopy Dance!!!
At first glance I thought Jane was wearing a party hat. I think to myself, what kind of party is it that they wear party hats? Not to worry, she was wearing a lampshade on her head.
althespook @ 32
Dude, she’s not gonna let you get away with that. You would have done better to allow as to how she was right-you WERE so busted.
can someone get that bratty juslin a drink plz? she’ll take vodka w/ cranberry juice – thanks y’all
rapier @ 38
the lampshade has long been the definitive party hat

Hunt was quite the scandal to the bluenoses of Big D (where I was landed and grew up). Was that White Rock Lake, btw?

What’s that, a Cape Cod?
Jonathan’s had a drink.
Pleasure to be here.
Jonathan is not a repub, but he’s had a tough week.
But Jonathan, we gotta step back from the fray now and again to remember why it’s worth fighting. Love, truth, beauty, and now isn’t our Jane a shining example of all of those?
Party tonight, pick up the swords again tomorrow. I’ll be there, join me.

tejanarusa @ 31
My impression, of course, but the three nominal frontrunners seemed deflated to find that their lines weren’t working with the audience much of the time. Would you have expected consistently loudest applause for Kucinich?
egregious at 47
Not a repub, although I used to lean that way.
Tough week? No, not really. But thanks for the sentiment.
I’ll keep everything else to myself.

At my home in denver once we had eggplant rollawayatini, cause we were getting it out of the garden to grill and it fell out of my son’s arms (he was 9 or so) and he and the other kids had a merry time chasing it down the hill at the back of our property. It bounced over the retaining wall into the creek below (ten feet) and smashed to bits. Since they HATED eggplant, the ‘accidental’ nature of this incident is suspect. And their mom got another one and made sure they all ate some. Mom’s are like that.
Is that sort of like rollafatti?
CTuttle @ 69
Instaed of cutting the eggplant the short way, cut it the long way and fry. Once fried, lay each one out on a plate, and in the center add ricotta & mozzerella cheese, a little sauce and a slice of sausage and roll each side over and put a toothpick in it. Add them all to a baking dish like this. I always add a lot of cheese & sauce to the top also.
tommy yum @ 13

hey mcc! Can you give us the straight dope on this?
ccmask @ 79
I gotta try that sometime! I’m lacking ricotta or any semblance there of, but, food for thought…!!! ;-)
Jonathan @ 18
Hi .
This is just a quick drop-in since I have to get up at an ungodly hour tomorrow.
I just saw this and it really has me going. Twenty-four years after the fact the US finds a judge complicit in its run up to bomb Iran by bringing up the killing of Marines in Beirut during Raygun’s time???? Nothing to rile up the lunatic jingoist base like this:
Judge orders Iran to pay families of dead marines $2.5 billion.
Considering the fact that three years later the US would refuse to honor an International Court judgement it was a terrorist state by laying mines in the harbor at Managua, Nicaragua.
Whenever it suits this government, no matter who’s sitting in the WH, to acknowledge international treaties (like pushing for WTO rulings to be enforced against weak nations) it’s OK to be a member of the international community.
When it’s time to be a responsible member of that community, the rules change.
This ruling is especially egregious (sorry, Egregious) in light of the fact that last year the Bush administration was crowing about a decision that vacated claims by former Marines who had been prisoners of war during the Gulf War saying that those troops couldn’t collect a judgement against the Iraqi government because they were members of the Armed Forces snd they should hve expected this when they joined up.
And still, Blackwater cannot be held accountable for the deaths of its “contractors” in Fallujah.
RonD @ 83
not anymore you don’t! (hic)

Frying is the best but grilling maintains the “low calorie” advantages of the eggplant vs pasta.
ccmask @ 90
I have been unable to drink for about three years. However, my pancreatic function has returned to normal and if it maintains into 2009 (and I live that long) I will be allowed SMALL amounts of alcohol until we find my tolerance level.
And I luuuuuurrrrves me my wines with food, I does, precious, I does….
althespook @ 14
AltheSpook Hunt is tied to Bush so I assume the Turks will read between the lines and assume that Hunt’s deal is offical American policy, which it might be.
The problem is that Iran and Syria both have Kurdish minorites Bush by supporting the Kurds without at least trying to get Turkey’s, Syria’s and Iran’s acceptance forces the Turks into Iran and Syria’s camp.
Of course whats to stop those three from stoping at Kurdishstan when there done. Bush might not care but the entire Arab league unhappy all former members of the Ottoman Empire will care though.
Nothing like a world war to disrupt oil supplies.

If there’s a Dog in heaven, the story might just cook the goose of a certain NC politician. Did someone mention grilling? ;-)
althespook @ 84
Sort of. Yesterday a union dude called to ask if Ron and I would come to the capital building in Sac to a presser. After speaking with him I thought that they were going to announce the passing of the health care bill. I said this on late late night last night but I was wrong. The bill will be voted on in two or three days. It is a plan to cover 90% of all cali folks. Employed people will pay no more than 5% of their salary. The employer will pay 7.5%. Unfortunately, the
dark sideinsurance companies will still be in the game. But there will be oversight and they have to cover everyone. Meds will be cheaper since the state will negotiate with theother dark sidebig pharma. It is not perfect but until we can get true universal, single payer care it will save lives. Right now 18,000 a year die in cali from lack of health insurance. Even the California Nurses Association is backing this. The fact that they are is huge since they are pretty radical. That is all I know right now.Siun has a new thread upstairs.
Waccamaw @ 99
I have been waiting patiently here in Florida for this story to take flight. It has it all! Why is the media being mumms I wonder?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 91
No need to go retro, YouTube has Louis Jordan.
things come undone @ 97
The Kurdish Problem is that they are the largest ethnic minority in the world without a homeland (the Palestinians are second, IIRC…). Turkey doesn’t give a rats ass about bush, they’ve not cooperated at all on the Iraqi war beyond honoring preexisting treaties, and they will NOT permit the PKK to get its hands on any significant amount of oil money. Period.
Hunt knows this. He is hoping the US will “redeploy” to one of the 14 undiscussed bases up there and protect his investment. He may be right, and then again he may not. And the arab league and the other players don’t give a damn about the Kurds, or they would have forced an autonomous Kurdish zone into existence decades ago. The Kurds are the Armenians of the 21st century.
marymccurnin @ 100
Thanks much. two quick questions?
a) arnie started this, but is he backing away from it now? or will he support it?
b) can we use this as a national model assuming (as I do) that nothing will get done at the federal level? (In your opinion, obviously, and I’m mainly focussing on cali specific areas that might not transfer to the other states…)
thanks and keep the faith!
egregious @ 47
Are you writing another post tomorrow ?
behindthefall @ 55
Hmmm, actually, (not sure where the debate was located), I’m not that surprised. Espcially the health care/insurance line yhou mentioned got big applause. Not at all surprised the “front-runners” got tepid response. But then I live in majority Mexican-American city, and am part of (by marriage) a Mexican-American family. The points of view are often not quite what the DLC and consultants expect.
Anyway, enough wonkery!
PARTY! I’ll take a diet Coke, please. (booze, sadly, interferes with my meds). But hand me that lampshade/hat anyway! I’ll trim it to match my style.
things come undone @ 106
If they ask me to :)
Jane my new red Louboutin slingbacks just came, I’ll wear them for your party tonight!
althespook @ 105
The dems compromised by putting Arnie, The Gropnator’s condition that all cali folks must be covered. The down side to this is salivating insurance companies knowing that all of California has to pay for health insurance.
I am not sure if this is the model to be used by the rest of the states. As more states write their own bills it will improve I hope.
marymccurnin @ 109
okay. we’ll watch it. a lot of good things have come out of cali, perhaps this will be the next one.
AltheSpook the Arab league is not going to let Turkey expand into Kurdish land in Iraq because they think its Arab land. Everyone except maybe Bush and Hunt knows that even with a Republican President we won’t be there forever.
This is bad news.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 91
Happy feet!
And how can you type after tequila, RonD?
Shit. EPU.
Jane’s got a new BlueAmerica thread, live with candidate Russ Warner, up 2 from here.
Jane you’re looking FABULOUS!

Once again, The Spook Abides!
I wonder if BoyKing can deliver on a promise for Kurdish Sovereignty, for surely that’s what he’s told his buddy Hunt Bro’s (silver scams, remember?) and the Kurds he’ll bring to the table?
I mean, at THIS point, sans Glassing The Sands, Chimpy/Shooter N The Boys are cut out of all the oil in the south of Iraq . . . the ONLIEST oil they can get or commandeer is the Kurds.
Course, we’ve burned them, too, in the past, n’est ce pas, recroix?
Good to see the Spook Out Again.
ccmask @ 79
Salt it and drain it first, then do all the above.
Flour, egg and bread (seasoned crumbs with cheese, too), then fry . . .
And that’s a KILLER and simple recipe, good stuff!!
Jane, I’m sorry, this is so inappropiate…I’m simply in love with you.
