As we enter Petraeus Spin Week, it’s stunning to see how far the terms of the discussion have been twisted. Listening to the pundits and the politicians, and even reading much of the blog discussions, I have to keep reminding myself of a few simple facts:
- We were lied into a war of choice – for many reasons: control of oil, an itch for mastery of the Middle East, grasping more profits for Cheney’s corporate comrades, and more.
- We not only invaded a sovereign nation which presented no threat to us, we proceeded to devastate it. Iraq’s infrastructure was already suffering from the sanctions of the Clinton years but we made certain they were destroyed with bombs, crony deals with ever changing political favorites, dissolution of the existing technocrat class, and never a thought of the Iraqi people.
- We encouraged and instigated sectarian tensions, handing power to divisive figureheads and … yes … using the Salvador Option
- We acted like thugs – kicking in doors. torturing, brutalizing and killing Iraqis with no consequence, Iraqis who we claimed to be “liberating.”
And when the Iraqis fought back – as sovereign people do when their homeland is invaded and brutalized, we labeled them terrorists and insurgents and hit them harder – never pausing to consider that Iraq is their country – not ours.
Instead, with the arrogance of a 19th century colonial power, we destroyed Iraq … and then blamed the Iraqis.
And this week, we will see Congress – including all too many of the Democratic members – ignore one basic fact. Iraq is not our country. The Iraqi people did not ask us to “liberate” them and we have no right – moral or legal – to be there at all. Yet instead of facing that simple reality, we will hear the convoluted excuses: benchmarks (set by us, not by the Iraqis), complaints about a lack of “political progress” (ignoring the fact that Iraq has a puppet government which does not represent the Iraqi people), self-congratulatory nonsense about Anbar province (where the Iraqi residents have no basic services or freedom of movement and we arm the very “insurgents” we fought a short while ago) and hand wringing faux concern about a “bloodbath” if we leave (while we are the cause of the bloodbath taking place today).
So as the news swirls and spins this weekend, let’s remember whose country Iraq is – and let’s keep reminding our “representatives” that we will not be silent as they ignore that simple fact. We may not be able to stop this occupation from continuing but at least we can look with eyes open and keep speaking up for what is right.

zed…dammit it’s the booze and eggplant…
Hi Siun! Evening everyone.
Siun!!!
It was criminal to invade Iraq.
The occupation since has been criminal.
This is not a war.
It’s a war crime.
But HRC will not look backward. She will look to the future.
Good evening.
This is not what I meant to write for tonight but there it is … so consider this a personal howl.
Front page headlines from some of today’s papers in the Carolinas:
Charlotte Observer – “Poll faults Bush on Iraq”
Raleigh News & Observer – “US goals for Iraq go largely unmet”
Myrtle Beach Sun News – “Review: Iraq’s future bleak”
Wilmington Star-News – “Politics still vicious despite Iraq security gains” (below the fold; Gabrielle topped it)
Heh……..maybe there’s a little reality seeping under the bushco propaganda campaign wall.
*waving to tommy yum*
When is Betrayus actually delivering “his” report to congress? Will it be televised?
It’s a charley foxtrot, and all the “broke-it-bought-it” justifications won’t excuse our staying another day.

Hi Siun!
Thank you!

Iran is coming up. Make no mistake.

I answered your question downstairs.
The USA is so damned arrogant. “The job is not done”. Amazing how the people think the world outside the USA is there for whatever we want it for… the people who live there be damned. Heck we don’t even consider most of them as people.
It’s a disgrace and the rest of the world now sees us for what we are. We’re thought of as crazies.
Siun @ 7
In wolf packs, I think all it takes is one wolf to howl for all the rest…and any other wolves in the area…to answer…
marymccurnin @ 13
saw it and thanks and asked you two back, just for my info. good luck and we’re pulling for you!
Toby Wollin @ 15
Ah OOOOOOOOooo!
Funny how the righties keep saying that if the Iraqis asked us to leave we should. They asked. We didn’t.
Siunshine, I could kiss you for this, yet another, perfect post.
Good evening, everyone
Siun, I think your piece demonstrates the importance of clarity in thought.
As always, a pleasure.
What had you planned on writing?
I thick Siun said it perfectly… and I wish some in congress would tell this exact story.

Cure the disease and the symptoms get better. Iraq is a horrible symptom; the disease is the Republican party.
Kevin Drum does a masterful dissembling of Shrub’s BS…
“Chaos Hawks nonetheless insist that the U.S. military needs to stay in Iraq for the foreseeable future. Why? Because if we leave the entire Middle East will become a bloodbath. Sunni and Shiite will engage in mutual genocide, oil fields will go up in flames, fundamentalist parties will take over, and al-Qaeda will have a safe haven bigger than the entire continent of Europe.
Needless to say, this is nonsense. Israel has fought war after war in the Middle East. Result: no regional conflagration. Iran and Iraq fought one of the bloodiest wars of the second half the 20th century. Result: no regional conflagration. The Soviets fought in Afghanistan and then withdrew. No regional conflagration. The U.S. fought the Gulf War and then left. No regional conflagration. Algeria fought an internal civil war for a decade. No regional conflagration.”
More of this is needed!!!
The chief UN nuclear inspector responded to US criticism on Friday, saying detractors were not giving attempts to get Iran to come clean on past nuclear activities a chance to work.

Don’t worry – you can count on Maurice Hinchey making a big noise. He’s been fighting this ever since Day One.

I agree and I would wager that I’m not alone.
Did someone say something about Howling at the moon?
I choose peace!
Does anyone expect President HRC to say after she is sworn in that she is going to pull out of Iraq?
No shit here. Thank you for posting the facts that should be plastered all over the media every day.
What a failure on so many levels this war has been for so many institutions.

The only reason it hasn’t so far is because BushCo. didn’t have a draft at his disposal to expand his horizons in the Middle East….
Sad to say, you right, because I believe this small impediment of the draft isn’t going to be able to stop this inevitable shit storm…
March on Washington, D.C., September 15.

ticktock @ 35
Don’t need a draft. we have theater yield nuclear tipped cruise missiles on B52’s. Just have to find a less alert ground crew next time…
Hi Pups, nice howl Siun!
I need a pointed cartoon (AZ Matt, you there?) of W and Petraeus on treadmills saying, “we’re making progress!” and “great exercise!” with the death toll and war profiteering $$ signs on the control panels.
That’s the picture in my head whenever W says we gotta get comfortable.
Heckuva job.
Any credible reports of the last loose nukes being returned? /s
ticktock @ 35
Bush will use nukes. He can’t help himself. He is at heart a mad dog.
Jonathan @ 36
I can’t wait. Any other marchers?
What are the Democrats waiting for, unanimity in the land?
ah … I am so glad I am not howling alone!
I was actually working on two other things … which will show up soon:
1- Tuesday night, the film on Malalai Joya will be on PBS
2- what withdrawing “combat troops” means in terms of numbers since I’ve been digging into the Pentagon ratio of combat to support forces
Folks should follow Chris Bower’s great work on the residual forces issues at Open left – he’s on fire!
althespook @ 39
Kindof a oops, am I bad moment to start the party, huh?….

nothing so far in available public media, including blogs. i hear privately that the general who checked them out has been dead for not quite a year, killed in an IED attack in Iraq. And they say the dead don’t come back…
bluejeansntshirt @ 43
We are having an event here in Rancho Cordova. It is a peace rally at the city hall were Bill Durston will announce that he is running against the bad, evil, stupid Dan Lungren. I am making 50 signs tomorrow. I am thinking about going to LA for the march on the 29th.
Folks – tomorrow is Monday, the start of a new week. What can we all do next week to “do our part” in terms of Iraq?
Letters to the editor?
Email/fax/phone to your senators and congress-people?
Scheduled demonstrations?
We’re all here “howling at the moon” – let’s review what tools are available to us so that we know what to do tomorrow morning..
I started reading Larry Johnson’s stuff on the loose nukes one night … never did get to sleep …

Had to get the Tom Waits in first though:

military madness
I would like to think that being a Mad Dog and acting as such should be grounds for impeachment. No wonder with this history of events, imperial invasion, we are truly less safe. How did we get to the place that a certifiably Mad Dog is the said leader of the free world?
dakine01 @ 33
That’s were I was going…
Siun @ 45
I look forward to your posts.
If we’re good little boys and girls we might get a withdrawal of 4000 troops! Jeepers, that’s like less than 5% someday and not even guaranteed, but the administration is just waxing all generous about it, ain’t they? We all should be so grateful.

Just caught a quick glimpse of an article over at DU about grounding military planes in VA next week…….sorry I didn’t bring it with me. Hopefully someone on high speed can get to it quicker than I.
marymccurnin @ 48
Rock on! If I have my geography right, isn’t that a pretty red part of the state?
althespook @ 47
oh, and the explanation that has been floated as to how the flight crew didn’t notice is that these were logged as “training weight” warheads, designed to provide aircrews with experience in flying the heavier nuclear tips without actually having to do so. According to the semi-official explanation, a crewman was given keys and codes to rack “b” when he was supposed to have been given keys and codes to rack “a”; he followed instructions and had the warheads loaded as “training weight” to be sent along with the missiles for decommissioning. Somehow, the “training” warheads got switched for the real ones. THAT is where the zombie general comes in. And the fact that six nukes sat in a cage in a munitions hanger without any extra guards for a number of hours/days/weeks? with everyone thinking they were something else.
Jonathan @ 36
I’m sure we’ll take a bridge in Austin.
bhatten @ 53

other ideas?
Jonathan is right .. what are we *doing*?
Impeachment is off the table. Iran is on the table.

Yes indeedie. But it is changing. If it is changing here it is changing everywhere.

Thanks for your message.
When I’m marching in D.C., I’ll think of you and others across the U.S.
Siun @ 65
anyone have those links I’ve seen in past threads to find demonstrations, etc.?
Siun @ 50
I’m starting a new blog on this one called Ratiocinations Of A Savage Heart. Unlike Ravings Of A Rational Mind, it will be serious, link heavy, and thoroughly researched.
My first post will be entitled “What Will Happen If We Use Theatre Level Nuclear Weapons On The Iranian Armed Forces And Reactor Complex At Natanz”. I’ll put it on RSS and post a link here.
And we only NEED six of those bombs, of the exact yield these “loose nukes” can provide. And they can be fired in standoff mode, possibly even from within Iraqi or Turkish airspace. No ground casualties, no lost aircraft or airmen, no possibility of Iran ever becoming a serious international power again, all good.
UNLESS the wind blows the fallout the wrong way…
marymccurnin @ 67
I actually don’t dislike many people, but as a Californian, I loathe and detest Dan Lundgren. Even his picture makes me foam at the mouth.

Thanks, Siun, Pheonix Woman, Looseheadprop, Jane, Christy, TRex, etc. These have been great posts lately, and we really do not need the SERIOUS and SOBER corporate hacks for real news. We have FIREDOGLAKE!
By the way way, There is no Petraeus Report. It has disappeared. Where is it? It is with the Iraq Weapons of Mass Destruction, and the five million missing White House e-mails.
Call your friends, make the right move.
Hit the streets.
Jonathan @ 88
With all of us behind you, you may not be able to keep your feet on the ground. *s*
do-si-do @ 82
Thank you. I will provide the link here as a post and will RSS it. I warn everyone, it will be very grisly. Theatre level nukes are bad stuff, very bad stuff. Prompt death toll in the hundreds of thousands, short term death toll in the low one million range, long term death from cancer and other radiation induced diseases, three to five million.
And that’s if everything goes well. As i said, if the fallout goes off course, Turkey, Iraq, or even Saudi Arabia could get hit. Then it is kitty bar the door.
I’ll be back in a bit…
Carry On…
back on the lake – had to make a potty break – hey that vodka was mucho strong lol…so are we ready for the whitewash uhhh i mean petraeus report?

Me too — for anyone else here from Upstate New York, there is a big rally in Syracuse on 9/29 at 1 p.m., in support of the Iraq Vets Against the War from Fort Drum. There are other events in various Upstate cities, but I think this rally and March is something we should support.
allthespook – please send me the link at media dot firedoglake at gmail dot com so I can make sure to grab it …

Bullsh*t. MSM spin. Photo Oppies for the doubleplusgoodthinkers. Cr*p.
Other than that, I have no idea. :)
Our ‘nation’ is rabidly marching towards unimaginable consequence; the people, as yet, seem powerless to prevent catastrophe or even to alter the course of events.
In the end the msd’s (main stream democrats) will prove as useful to the mouth foamers as WMD’s.
Let this post be the howl heard ’round he world. Well done everyone!
Sorry, man. I can’t get onboard with nuking Iran. I have yet to see a shred of evidence that Iran has done anything to the US that the US hasn’t done many times to many people. I do not see Iran as an existential threat, and that, to me, means nuking Iran would be a calculated act of mass murder.
I’m all for defense. I’m totally against aggression.
Siun @ 99
I am honored. It will be a few more days, I’m still crunching the numbers from the yield simulators and studying wind patterns to determine most likely fallout paths. Reliable data from that part of the world isn’t easy to come by.
Hey,
Everyone.
Going to D.C. is, for me, a matter of time, and a little money.
No big deal.
Just trying to encourage others to do what they can.
Don’t miss the bus!
Thank you, Siun, for this post. As always, the mainstream media absolutely ignore the Iraqis whom we have trapped in a hell that we can’t possibly clean up. Your Sunday posts help me to keep from going mad from the surreal lies that are being hurled at us constantly. I wrote to my two useless senators, urging them to take action to get us out of Iraq. One of the idiots wrote back; the other one hasn’t bothered. What did Liddy say? “It is for history to judge whether or not we were right to go in….Things are looking up….We cannot just pull out….” I’m going to stay on their backs. My local representative is anti-war, so I’m going to focus on the senators–Liddy Dole is really vulnerable in the next election.
On the bright side: the Bush Countdown Clock that I bought 2 years ago has broken 500. We are at 498 days and counting down.
So happy to see a large “IMPEACH” sign in the back window of a vehicle this afternoon — in the parking lot of a Catholic Church in a solidly Republican suburb of Dallas!
David W. Bartoo @ 101
Agreed. The only thing I think the Beltway will respond to is for every one in the land to stand up and say that anyone who votes to continue the war in any way will be voted out in 2008.
no matter how much campaign money they raise.
No matter what party they belong to.

Huh? Democrats “who want to think about the consequences of losing”? Is THAT how Bill Kristol frames our stopping the illegal and immoral war that we are making on the country and people of Iraq? If we make the decision to stop – THAT is LOSING? What alternate universe is he calling this in from?
Waccamaw @ 109
Thank you. I just got a promotion and am now, for my sins, management. Bottom line, a lot more free time. I intend to invest it in my blog(s).
My next post after the first one on Ratiocinations will be a detailed examination of how we can get out of Iraq with and without our equipment and support units. And why we aren’t going to (hint: we’re going to redeploy to the 14 “undiscussed” bases instead).
do-si-do @ 108
That is the ONLY winning ticket for 2008!
Siun @ 111
no problem. the key point is to realize that those loose nukes were not loose, they were stolen. by either cheney or bush himself. we need to start the drumbeat NOW that if another set is used in Iran, it is a full on war crime and must be prosecuted. If necessary we have to bring this nation to a halt to do that.

My late mother bought the tenth house built in Cordova in 1954 (brand new, four bdrm. two bath for $11,5000). We had just moved there from Okla. And as far as you could see it was nothing but grapes, tomatoes and hop fields. And you could spend the whole day at the American River and not see another soul. And the old Fair Oaks bridge was the only way to cross the river. And coloma Rd. was just a tiny two lane country lane. Time changes everything.

General Petraeus: lying to Congress is a Federal crime.
General Petraeus: collective punishment is a war crime.
General Petraeus, you swore to uphold the Constitution, not the Shrub. Your sworn Oath compels you to uphold valid treaties ratified by your civilian leaders.
General Petraeus, your sworn Oath compels you to uphold the Geneva Conventions, incorporated as they are into the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
General Petraeus, a war in self-defense may be legal under the Law of War.
In the name of our military Occupation of Iraq, the US military regularly and routinely slaughters civilians and displaces vast numbers of non-combatants.
General Petraeus, your appearance before Congress allows you to oppose or demand proloning the agony our Occupation brings to our soldiers and the Iraqi people.
General Petraeus, honor your Oath.
Restore your honor.
Serve the Constitution, not the Shrub.
When you come before Congress, resign your commission and free yourself to serve the nation.
General Petraeus, tell us the truth about our failed Occupation of Iraq.
Serve your soldiers and the Republic, not the Shrub.
Tell the nation what the majority of us already know. You still have time to turn away from Westmoreland’s path.
You still have time to honor you Oath to the Constitution and tell us all the truth.
Serve the nation, not the Shrub.
Tell the truth, General. Tell the truth.
This one day in your career, General, set aside your ambition and speak truth to power.
This one day, General, find your moral courage – and use it.
Or condemn more privates and specialists to die for nothing – for politics.
Condemn them to die for the President’s vanity.
And your ambition.
And – if you sacrifice them on the altar of your career and the pyre of Cheney’s madness:
may you never know a waking moment free of fear of war crimes trials..
until you appear in the dock…
may your natural death in a Hague “lifers” prison be the start -
of your eternity spent choking on razor blades…each inscribed with the Constitution, your forsworn Oath, and the names of your civilian victims in Iraq….
written in lye.

The kind of information you plan to talk about, esp. wrt nuke use, may be out there (where people like you know how to find it) but I’ve surely not seen any real detail about same on the blogs I read and it’s the sort of gory detail that *everyone* needs to get hit up side the head with……again, and again, and again.

This is a question I can answer. These people are called VULCANS. They are not human. But there are consequences to them if they lose all their profits they get from the Iraq War.
Waccamaw @ 129
Yeah, when my boss promoted me he said “those bloggers are good on snark but succky on facts. Go give them some facts to snark about.” So I will, and thank you.
Oh, in case all this “risk of losing” stuff sounds familiar, try this moldy oldie.
I wonder about Petraeus. Is it possible that he is at heart a good soldier, someone who said, “This is what I need”, and was told,”This is what you can have”? He said himself when he first took over that he thought his chances of success were no better than 1 in 4. I can’t imagine Bush or Cheney admitting such a thing…Is it possible that Bush told him,”Look, I know you’d have done it differently-but this is the situation we’re in. I think you’re the only one who can maybe save this thing, so will you take it over?”
A good soldier in this position could not refuse.
Siun @ 130
thanks for the reminder, and just thanks!
Kirk … true words … may it come to be
Siun speaks for me.
So do – from recent statements I’ve seen – Rep. Elijah Cummings of MD of the House Armed Services Committee (who speaks uncensored truth) and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter of NH also of the House Armed Services Committee (who speaks about Iraqi refugees and the wish of Iraqi citizens that we depart their country).
Carl Levin, meanwhile, still seems to be almost gleeful about finding an excuse to blame the corrupt Iraqi cabinet – that we helped to install – for all that has gone wrong in Iraq, as though it operates independently of our influence in the Green Zone. Unseemly glee is how it came across, as Senator Levin asked General Jones to agree with him (which he did) that ‘the failure to reconcile’ by the ‘Iraqi government’ was directly ‘causing the deaths of American troops.’ No doubt that self-righteous “justification” will continue to feed Levin’s hypocritical moral outrage, as he tries again to wheedle Joseph Lieberman into condescending to agree to a Democratic-offered “bipartisan,” non-binding symbolic vote about our future deployments inside that sovereign nation that we have transparently “purchased” with hundreds of billions of public dollars for (formerly-Iraqi) oil wealth trillions of privatized profit. A “security blanket” for Iraq, America is not, Carl Levin. Perhaps you meant to say a “security blanket” for Israel and Big Oil?
Sincerely,

Unfortunately, like some many at his level in the pentagon, Betrayus is a shameless self promoter whose care for his troops is a disgusting abomination. He is a photo op press release general who lives on service to the people in power above him. We used to call people like him REMF’s cause they got so many people killed needlessly.
(hint: the first two words of REMF stand for Rear Echelon. I think you can guess the other two…)
oops – source here
RonD – when Col Ted Westhulsing commited suicide (or so they say) his final note pointed to Petraeus as one of the reasons he was in despair.
Petraeus has been a beast for a long time I think … but he sure knows how to charm the congress.

Very familiar indeed with the term, first heard during my stint in the USAF…This is not a consensus opinion. Petraeus has been building a reputation for quite some time, as even I had heard about him some years ago, in positive terms. As to besmirching his honor…I would like to see the facts of the situation that make the General an “abomination”.
thank you, Siun –
hope the whole Beltway hears your powerful howl.

Siun, I’ve nothing but respect for your analysis…could you direct me to some sort of summary, The Case Against the General or some such thing? I have long wondered if the Gen wasn’t simply trying to do the best he could with what he could get-the fate of all soldiers.

I think Siun may be better able to get it for you than me. I’m just going on what my friends in the business tell me; they are good people and I trust them and a number of them really, really hate Petraeus. (Did you know that is the name of a classical Centaur? And Centaurs were on the whole not nice folk? Weird conincidence if true.)
I’ll also try to get some blog posts maybe from main and central or iraqslogger.
Oh, I think one explanation may be the “old” and “new” Petraeus. At one time he was indeed a fine soldier and did well by himself and his men. That may have been when you heard about him. But at some point he got “E-ring-Itis”, the desperate hope for those four shiny stars, and the rest may have been history…again this is from hearsay, so i’ll try to get some facts.
It’s General Froptraeus to you, Sir! After reporting to Congress, Petraeus is reporting to, you guessed it, Fox News. http://rawstory.com//news/2007….._0909.html The Fox hype machine must be churning out memos how to spin the most recent escalation and ongoing political collapse in Iraq as somehow not a failure. It’s not a civil war. Never use those words “civil” and “war” in the same sentence. They must be in separate paragraphs. In fact, the word war must only be used in the phrase “war on terror.” Duh. They think we are such morons.
After all this time, excuse after excuse after excuse from the Republicans and Fox noise, I and most others in America have had it. It’s time to stand up Democrats. It’s time to cut our losses before these incompetent Fox Republican officials and politicians get us in even deeper. It’s time to stop the frop horror show. Pull the plug. These frops have proven they are totally out of their league. They couldn’t run a high school government, much more the United States of America. Rah rah sis boom bah, goooooooooooooooo Surge! Yeah!

Here’s his wiki entry. Note that he got those shiny four stars…
Siun…well stated. Thank you.
Iraq soon will enter into the fifth year of ongoing conflict betwixt Iraqi and Iraqi and betwixt Americans and Iraqis.
9/11 now has reached the sixth year mark since that terrible mornings attacks and high death tolls. Still the image of Americans jumping from WTC towers to certain death remains the most vivid and illustrative of the awfulness of 9/11.
Invading Iraq and occupying Iraq has now been fully wound into 9/11. This was not ever how events needed to proceed after 9/11.
Or should have.
G.W.Bush has led Americans into a terrible war and occupation in Iraq. Millions of Iraqis now have either been killed, suffered greatly in so many ways or become ME refugees.
All because of G.W.Bush.
Because of Dick Cheney.
Because of Donald Rumsfeld.
Because of people with last names like Kagan,Perle,Kristol,Ledeen,Feith and Wolfowitz.
War crimes have taken place in Iraq that took place due to Americans choices and conduct. To think otherwise is self-deceitful.
This is a shrouded deception all Americans must confront.American war crimes in Iraq. Set in motion in highest offices of WashDC. Against and in Iraq based on untruths and craven desires/goals,on illegal decisions and conduct.
This coming week more lies, untruths and the worst of spun wishful thinking will be thrown at the American people by their leaders and representatives in WashDC.
Something has gone very wrong in WashDC and unless or until WashDC is brought to heel over the lies, duplicity and moral/ethical failures and shortfalls it so readily has endorsed and endorses still in Iraq and other ME conflicts events in the ME will only become worse.
Why is finding profiles in courage and doing what is right being done so rare in WashDC?
Again Siun. Thanks to you and sites such as FDL we still may find a way out from this dark time in America.
The profiles in courage must be our own and doing what is right, fighting for what is right must be stated and forced to the fore.
WashDC needs to have its money power taken away and brought to submission. Unless and until the money power of WashDC is curbed and restricted in full measure little else will matter.
WashDC has become a monster.
This monster needs to be chained.
It is too late for Iraq and the Iraqi people.
Iran appears to be next in line incredible as that is in terms of stupid things to do in ME.
It comes down to the money. And stupidity.
Our current president,G.W.Bush is mascot to this twisted, perverse, deceitful way of thinking and conduct. But he is not alone.
American core media outlets continue to give G.W.Bush and his warmongering minions plenty of positive news spin and op-ed cover/support.
His party, the DC GOP has fully impaled itself on his stupidity.
The DC DEMS seem ever so inclined to do so as well.
All this quite incredible. And surely pathetic.
RonD, if you’re still here, I think this resolves our dispute. I judge the man based on his track record of accomplishment in iraq. you are judging him on intentions and pre-iraq actions, which are all good.
Apples and Oranges. I still think he got stars in his eyes, tho.
No Quarter On Good Soldier, Bad War.
We are out of Iraq except for Hunt oil. It is a big sand dune. And an A-arab rode across the desert burning sand on his camel named clyde. The 50’s song. Now we are in a position of depedndnce on those folks thanks to Bushco and compadres at BIG OIL.Killing for the economy it is all about th4 almighty dollar not almighty god. Policy setter turdblossom is a not believer. Hypocricriy is so deep you have to have to wear chest waders.
RonD – sorry, I missed your question. Here’s a link to a very good account of the Westhuling case involving Petraeus. Others have not been so certain that it was suicide.
incredibly eerie how familiar this all sounds. my native american grandmother told me horrific stories of your occupation here on turtle island, our ancestral home brutally stolen with unlimited violence and stupendous greed.
not much has changed in amurrkkka, ennit?
George W. Bush : The Butcher of Crawford
“And when the Iraqis fought back – as sovereign people do when their homeland is invaded and brutalized, we labeled them terrorists and insurgents and hit them harder – never pausing to consider that Iraq is their country – not ours.”
“Instead, with the arrogance of a 19th century colonial power, we destroyed Iraq … and then blamed the Iraqis.”
When Energy needs trump the rule of law and “Reason.” Seems that the purveyors of energy are all above the law. We allow it!!!
do-si-do @ 108
How do we manage that? People here can’t even get behind a no buy anything day. Say it will damage the middle class. Don’t see how. They don’t lose a day’s pay and they sit around doing nothing if the protest is successful. Somehow we have to do something other than talk, but no one wantsto discuss ways and means. I assume we generally are not ready yet. You will be happy to hear, I’m giving it a rest for a while.
As for the need for new organizational forms outside what passes for representative democracy, Walter Mosley has a short piece in the last Nation which reaches the same conclusion although he says it better. You can find his article at http://www.thenation.com/doc/20070910/mosley
