David Petraeus — a change that the paper and other right wingers claim is an effort to “undermine” Petraeus’ credibility. But, as TPM’s Greg Sargent points out, the legislation calling for the report specifically mandated that it come from the President, not the top commander in Iraq.

I immediately emailed some really ticked off emails to Mike Arcuri, Hillary and Chuck. I was at a ‘Pampered Chef’ party where one of the other attendees admitted to being chair of the neighborhood Rudy committee. (Seemed to be a bit uncomfortable with that, too.) I personally want Mitt to get the nomination. You see, Rudy is the one candidate that I can say without hesitation I have the book on (fortunately or unfortunately), Dem or Repug. I despise the man so thoroughly that over the years ever since he was mayor I’ve more less consumed tons of material about him. When he was DA for the Southern District of New York he actually did some good things. But unbeknown to many at the time, he was in fact feeding and masking his enormous ego.

America’s Mayor Goes to America

There are at least half a dozen reasons that a lot of political prognosticators, including many inside his own party, will tell you that Rudolph Giuliani will never be the Republican nominee for president, no matter what the polls say. They are, in no particular order:

1. As New York’s mayor, he was pro-choice, pro-gun control and pro-gay rights.

2. He has demonstrated an odd propensity over the years for publicly dressing up in women’s clothing, proof of which is now readily available online, including a disturbing clip of Donald Trump nuzzling the mayor’s bosom.

3. He once endorsed Mario Cuomo for governor.

4. Once, while mayor, he holed up for months at the apartment of a gay couple who were close friends of his. Try explaining that one at Bob Jones University.

5. He has divorced two times; the last time, he broke the news to his family on national television. His two children don’t seem inclined to vote for him, let alone nominate him for Father of the Year.

6. Presidential politics is said to be largely about warmth and likability, and these aren’t words that leap to mind with Giuliani. His former political ally, Ed Koch, once felt moved to write a book titled “Giuliani: Nasty Man.” It sold well.

And yet here we are, just past Labor Day, when presidential campaigns become tangible affairs, and Rudy Giuliani isn’t showing any signs of fading. In fact, he continues to lead the rest of the Republican field in just about every national poll (followed closely by Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney), taking advantage of a fractious party flailing for direction in the era after George W. Bush. While Giuliani trails Romney in the critical early states of New Hampshire (where Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, is basically a local) and Iowa (where Romney seems willing to spend much of his estimated $250 million fortune to win over every churchgoing farmer in the state, if that’s what it takes), a bevy of polls show Rudy cleaning up in large, delegate-rich states on the coasts.

Just go to the Village Voice website and type “Rudy Giuliani” in search. Several articles will come up.

Then also go to amazon.com and type “Wayne Barrett” in search. Several book titles on Rudy will come up that Barrett wrote himself or coauthored with others.

And that’s just for starters. Vanity Fair is another source. The NYTimes archives is another. Tons of material from his tenure in the 1990s as mayor of NYC.

A little off topic, but I think Giuliani will be among those who say something vile wrt to new Bin Laden tape. So maybe not too OT.

I think we need to hit back vary hard at anyone who says, more or less “See, Bin Laden says faction Y wants X, and that is in his interest so we shouldn’t do X, and ain’t it a funny coincidence that faction Y and Bin Laden want the same thing.”

The subprime mortgage mess is just starting. Layoffs in both construction and mortgage all set to hit in the next few months.

I don’t mean to sound crass, but what is goina happen to all the immigrant workers working on the supersize me McMansions going up in key markets around the country. Oh, I guess they will still be finished; its just the shrinking middle class and increasingly numerous poor who will suffer.

I would wager that a lot of the McMansions are being built on spec by over extended builders who will go out of business or are being built for people who won’t be able to keep up the mortgages on them once they are completed. either way, I see a lot of empty McMansions in the future

Does any of this matter? There was a lot of material on Bush that got buried or ignored, in favor of the “horse race” mentality of the TradMed.

They succeeded in burying Gore, who is twice the man George Bush can ever aspire to be.

Rudy’s case is different. He’s highly toxic in a way that Bush was not.

Rudy is toxic in ways that the Shrub was not. The Shrub was toxic in ways that Rudy is not. The Shrub was still very toxic, but it did not matter.

Shrub: officially awol from TANG, alleged cocaine user, official alcoholic, alleged John, alleged party to abortion, officially ill-tempered (mano a mano), official frat boy, bad boy, official low IQ, official mean-spirited prick (Karla Fay Tucker), official religious hypocrite (curses and uses the finger, record holder for TX Executions), official business failure, etc.

ALL of these were known by the Media, but the Media covered for the Shrub.

They are already providing much cover for the R candidates.

Guiliani’s downfall would be the same that all Northeastern Yankees have suffered since Kennedy. He won’t play well in the south and the Breadbasket.

My reply – “I haven’t got a phone line and no phone number at my new apartment. I do not foresee getting one in the foreseeable future. Since when has a phone number been necessary to post anything? That “requirement” is offensive and outrageous and probably unconstitutional as well. Try mailing without. Sorry I cannot help you there.”

Oh…Madeline L’Engle passed away. What a painful week. She was a Smith College grad and I got to see her speak some years back — and it was wonderful, just like her books.

I’m sorry to hear this–I loved her writing.

I visited Manhatten oh a lifetime ago and attended a meeting of some arts group and met her assistant. A beautiful young woman with flowing red hair who threw her arms open when the subway stopped like a renaissance figure greeting lute players.

Check the Aug 25 Science News. They’ve been studying what happened to that building. Apparently it burned for several hours, and the firefighters couldn’t get in to fight it (and didn’t expect it to drop, either: a first for them, too). The studies are difficult – one researcher said it took two months on a supercomputer to model the thing – but they’re pretty sure at this point that it was the fire that was most of the cause of it collapsing. Warped steel beams – there’s a very impressive picture of one with a hairpin-type bend in it.

Of course, most steel-frame buildings don’t have thousands of gallons of diesel fuel stored in them either, to run emergency generators for a command center. Another brilliant move by Rudy.

OH. MY. GOD. Diesel fuel? I knew it was stupid to put the command center in an area that had already been attacked once, but it completely slipped my mind that they’d have to have generators for emergencies.
