Well, the end of summer is upon us and I’ve just now started to get my grill groove on, for the first time ever really. I’ve been enjoying a sunset BBQ about three times a week for the last month or so. Just me digging the patio scene with a friend or two , or just the cats. You see I’ve recently discovered the ingredient I’ve been missing all of these years for a chill grill , Luxuria Music (luxuriamusic.com).
LuxuriaMusic is an internet radio station, hosted by live DJs, that plays an eclectic mix of Exotica, Lounge, Space Age Bachelor Pad, Bossa, Bollywood, Bubblegum,Soft-Psych, Go-Go, Latin Jazz, Sophisticated Rock and Surf music.
There is very rarely a commercial and the DJs are excellent. These are the people who’ve scoured the Goodwill record bins for decades to bring you the goods. There are other radio stations on the internet that claim “lounge-exotica” in their names, but this is the real deal. I first heard about the station from my friend Kristian Hoffman who has a great show on Sundays called Pepperland Spicerack. I’ve since discovered that three more friends of mine have shows on there as well (yeah, thanks for the heads up “friends”.)
You know, it really took the original punk rocker-art students to bring kitschy lounge and other way out sounds back from the thrift store dumpsters, and now all of their years of record bin flipping is on this internet radio station- 24 hours a day. In addition to lounge superstars like Martin Denny, Yma Sumac, and Esquivel, which are hardly rare discoveries anymore, you’ll also hear many obscure no hit wonders such as Viv and Deitmar, Novi Singers, The Soul Sensations, and Tino’s Trio.
If you’re tired of your cds and playlists try this station, grab a cocktail and groove baby, groove.

Donita! and Fini!!!
2!
[saunters in, brandy snifter lazily dangling in his left hand, wearing red velvet smoking jacket while holding a mellow cherry tobacco scented pipe in the right hand] Hello my fellow DFH’s and assorted miscreants and representatives of the intelligence community monitoring this website!
Fred Ain’t Worried – so why should you be?
I can’t believe I’m number three.
Does anyone know if any money has been spent rebuilding Lebanon like Bush promised?
Morris Sheppard @ 6
You’re Not! ;-)
Okay, so I ended up at 6. Big deal.
Sandman @ 7
Is he going to rebuild it like he did the Gulf Coast?
Sandman @ 7
[gulps/gasps] HA! Maybe Hezbollah’s money but we can’t even get our folks in New Orleans squared away yet!
Hi fini!
happy friday donita!
i LOVE luxuria music. my friend turned me on to it awhile back! i often listen to it on my laptop, drinking a glass of red wine while i read the depressing news of the day……it takes away a bit of the sting.
rock on,
nora
Morris Sheppard @ 9
isn’t that twice as good?
there was a great Onion headline a while ago that went something like:
“Hipsters rebel by listening to the music their parents rebelled against”
though that leaves out the whole retro-futuristic fascination abroad in the land.
For you dearest. I will see you very late tonight in Tahlequah. ;0)
Oh yeah, chillin’ and grillin’, all summer long.
My stove died two months ago and I haven’t looked back since.
Propane MF’r anyway, I suppose I’ll get me one of those new fangled giant toaster oven with the rotisserie thingy once it starts raining again.
No toobz at my place so I have to rely on the radio. (GAG!!)
Got rid of two kittens today, one to go, and then maybe I can enjoy BBQ’ing without so much nosy ‘company’.
Elliott @ 12
[saunters over toward Elliot]Hello my young friend, would you care to get “jiggy” with me to the mellow tunes from above? [sticks a toe out, starts twisting to the music]

Oh my word, this is an awesome station. It may give my local anti-corporate radio station The Current a run for its money.
(The Current is part of the Minnesota Public Radio empire but not classical music.)
Does anyone believe that 20% of Americans cannot find America on a World Map? I know the young woman misheard the question and her answer did not apply to the question, I understand that. But does anyone think the question is real or just made up by the pageant?
finifinito @ 18
why not?
If Ima Sumac were new music today what category would she be listed under?
finifinito @ 4
[holding his single malt glass just under his nose, inhaling slightly to get the taste buds drooling, and sipping ever so slowly . . .]
Hey, fini! You’re such an inclusive guy, welcoming the intelligence community to the party.
Hey spooks! Come on in — no need to lurk!
Hey, fini, that volcano vid is shots of Madame Pele in all her finery! This is my fave volcano tune…

We’re all friendly here. No need for the poor schmoe having to keep an eye on us to not enjoy his or herself! It’s Friday evening at Ft. Meade already, someone is missing some quality time at the watering hole. At least they can enjoy some tunes with us!

Citizen Sparks and the Firepup Groovers:
What a kick!!…I been listenin’ for the last couple a minutes and I put this spot on my “favorites”. I ain’t a real SoCal “hipster”…I’m jest a charter geriatric boomer who was trained in classical string music and grew up in the late 50’s and early 60’s on Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson and then the Lord and Master Robert Zimmerman.
I lost a year of my life in a green mossy spot in southeast Asia from 1966-67 and came back ta Sgt. Pepper, Led Zeplan and Motown so…I REALLY love this stuff AND NO COMMERCIALS!!
Thanx sister Donita…I owe ya kid!
Donita, you should join the chillin’ and grillin’ club here at the marina. Great food, some decent musicians as well, and a spectacular view of the boats and the channel.
We’ve got Leon Ware (writer/producer for and with Marvin Gaye, Minnie Ripperton, Quincy Jones, Nancy Wilson, etc.) doing the sauce all this week.
BTW, did you ever talk to Eliot Roberts?
finifinito @ 4
Dang it, I can’t find the purple boa with the golden tips…
Hi, all! After facebook deleted my original account (NB: do not ask questions via the help account if you have an obviously fake name, they will simply shut you down at that point), I put together another one. I should point out the name is from a handy dandy fake name generator that I liked. So if you get a friends request from me, that’s what’s up…
Hi Donita, I love sitting out on the deck this time of year with a nice breeze, good music and a glass of wine! I’m looking forward to seeing you live in Boston! Just got my tickets!
I am loving this station…I’ve recently grown addicted to Internet radio like this. I now have a new station for stone grooves.
1,591 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON..
PS Sister Donita:
I ain’t enamored of SoCal ‘cuz I spent too much time there in 60’s and mid-70’s (Santa Monica-Ocean Park and Irvine-UCI)…but as long as I don’t hafta live there I ken listen.
thanx again kid
whistling Sentimental Journey. Good one, Donita. Forgot all about that song!
I love the dancing patchcords on the telephone switchboard. I had a friend who used to work one of the last two in use anywhere in the Pacific Bell system — in 1985!
Elliott @ 26
So would that make the dude from Chocolate Rain Itchy?
Greetings people! I just wanted to properly credit the videos.
“Musical Officie ” (1961) is a video piece by Ernie Kovaks with music by Juan Esquivel.
The last video “Volcanoes” has music by another lounge great, Arthur Lyman.
Busy right now so this is a drive by …

Hi Donita!
thanks!
sporkovat @ 15
Ha!
Donita Sparks @ 41
No, but there is a great man, one of your fellow residents of the City of Angels and who has served as an inspiration for decades. His name is Hugh. He has a lot of friends to his place for parties, you might look him up sometime.
Norske,
Re: 1966-67
What unit? Where?
Elliott @ 43
oh, and chocolate, too
Bustednuckles @ 17
Hi Bustedknuckes. I’m totally down with the toaster oven action, I rarley bake.
Does anyone recall POP? Pacific Ocean Park. I do.
finifinito @ 46
Donita, is your real name Bunny?
NorskeFlamethrower @ 28
My pleasure my man! I think you’ll really dig it.
Yeah, but I bet all you ‘US Americans’ can find ‘The Iraq’ on a map! If you have one!
/s
Busted, be sure to get a good quality (high buck) toaster oven. Those puppies start fires. Just kablowie and everything inside was on fire. Happened to me (luckily I was in the kitchen and saw it) and when I told folks at work, a couple of them said it had happened to them too. Just be careful.
NorskeFlamethrower @ 34
*splort* I can NOT imagine why you’d find Irvine boring. Oh no. Not at all.
Although mind you, lots of the trees have matured enough to hide a lot of the blandness…
That’s it. I’m definitely going on a hunt for a velvet blazer and a pair of Beatle boots. The perfect grillin’ togs if I’m gonna listen to stuff like this.
Mighty fine swank.
Rick DeVille @ 56
a light magenta?
scott @ 32
Oh goodie! come up a say hello.
Donita,
I spend a chunk of my life in thrift stores hunting vinyl.
Thanks for the Martin Denny clip.
Can you believe I gave my Joe Cocker boots away? Blue base, red and white stripes up the calf, and blue with white stars around the leg.
Oh fun, Quiet Village! I remember my mom telling me she’d met Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman. Assuming, nice guys.
And obviously fun.
Loo Hoo. @ 60
What’d you do that fer!?!?
Loo Hoo. @ 60
what were you thinking?
Does anyone remember the clubs with wonderful bands along the sand in Huntington Beach?
Loo Hoo. @ 54
I’ve had my eye on a Hamilton Beach model for a hundred bucks.
Mebbe I need to look into some insurance….
finifinito @ 4
I’m smoking a nice Montecristo Habana Torpedo to go along with that brandy.
Other good lounge music:
Charlie Byrd – from early to mid-1960s
Astrud Gilberto – same time period
Rayne @ 61
Just curious…. do you look like either of them???
Bustednuckles @ 65
You do need to keep toaster ovens *clean*. Clear out the crumb tray each time you use it and if anything melts over the side, get it off there. What happens is all the junk accumulates and catches on fire. It’s so much smaller it has no where near the tolerances for this a regular oven does.
Morris Sheppard @ 6
Now there’s lowered expectations taken to a whole new level.
Donita Sparks @ 68
lmao, that took me a minute..
Bustednuckles @ 65
Keep it clean, keep it safe, and keep it within sight.
Me, I’m old school. I’ll grill in the heat of summer, the crispness of autumn (Thanksgiving turkey on the grill, anyone?), the cold of winter, and even the damp of spring.
You can have my Weber grill when you pry it out of my cold dead hands.
peanutbutter @ 69
You do know of course that meat and other greasy items aren’t really recommended for these things, right?
Here’s some good sound, maybe.

Hi, Donita!
Good idea! Radios online are good opportunities to discover new music and to listen something new (or something old, that we didn’t still know). Hmm, I’ll listen the Luxuria Music now! Thank you for the suggestion!
I know a good radio online, the music type is very different from the casual, but it’s something new to be discovered. Yeah, it’s very funny! Do you know those Japanese drawings, animes? Well, in this radio are played anime music:
http://www.radioanimix.com.br
The Rádio ANiMiX it’s a radio on-line done by fans of animes and J-Music (Japanese music), was founded three years ago and it constantly brings the last innovations of the Japanese music, animes and mangás. Donita, sorry for I not was here last Friday, I was sick and I went to the hospital… But I’m better now and next Saturday I’ll play with my band, in a party of an university of my city!
I hope to see you in December, in the shows in Brazil! I’ll be there!
I have to split early today, I got
another registered letter from the IRS to pick up. The last one was to inform me they weren’t going to refund my 600 bucks because I waited too long. I am REALLY hoping its the same message.
Bastards anyway.
Have a good one, see ya Monday.
Madeleine L’Engle author of “A Wrinkle In Time” has died.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPp5IO07D9s
Donita Sparks @ 68
Heh. No. I look like the spawn of a French-Finn woman and an Asia-Hawaiian, neither of which have the musical gifts that Denny and Lyman had…oh, I did play violin, but that was from the French side, skipped a generation.
I’ll have to tell mom you asked. She’ll get a kick out of it.
james @ 66
Ahhhh! Another man of Taste & Style I see!
Morris Sheppard @ 29
Hi Morris your club sounds fab. No, I haven’t called Elliot yet, but he’s on my list. Thanks!
Grilling is reserved for my $2 garage sale grill I have, it works great!
Jandira Ferreira @ 75
I’m going to pass this on to firepup althespook. This sounds right up his alley.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 74

Totally OT, but I just got an email from the Athens Area Humane Society that they’re sort of under siege.

I think you guys know what to do.

RockPaperScizzors @ 88
lol…no but he sure has swell Taste & Style that is similar to my own. He’s not nearly as hep as I am though. I know what “jiggy” means and can use it in a sentence properly.
AZ Matt @ 5
I realize that there are some among us who don’t believe that OBL is responsible for 9-11, but on that I take him at his word. Responsible for killing 3,000 Americans. Fred Thompson is a douchebag if he thinks that capturing and prosecuting someone responsible for killing 3,000 Americans is “more symbolism than anything else.”
TRex @ 85
A stray we have been feeding, etc., had her little ones last night. Right now she’s with her five babies in a new printer box on my front porch. I will move her and the kitty kiddos into the utility room on the back porch before driving north later tonight. Won’t you please take care of our animals. Adopt one, or two or three. ;0)
BigMitch @ 90
that was beyond belief!

The guitarist of this band, Hide, was very famous among the fans of animes and J-Music of the whole world, but he committed suicide and that went very sad to the fans and the members of the band.
Elliott @ 98
Seems like a timely idea to me :D
Any San Diegans about? Big meet up tomorrow off Rosecrans, and Act Blue is involved.
Elliott @ 98
THWAAK! Why didn’t I think of that?
Loo Hoo. @ 101
are you going to live blog it? ;)
tw3k @ 100
Personally, I’d like to see Patrick Fitzgerald grill them, slowly, for several hours. Smoke them out, make them sweat, and let them cook in their own juices . . . then slice them and serve them up.
Senate tell Bush to gag himself
Peterr @ 104
that sounds finger lickin’ good!
Peterr @ 93
Fred got the word from the owners of the Republic Party (the Bush family): do not mess with our cash cow cronies.
Elliott @ 98
…a mahvalous idea, lets…!!! ;-)
The Dems are content to let shrub run out the clock, so they don’t get blamed for anything that occurs while he’s in office.
What idiots.
Once they inherit the problems he’s created, they’ll own ‘em.
Apologies for OT.

Not OT and true enough.

imo, you should have fun!

That’s why you cook them slowly.

What, you don’t like grilled chicken hawk?
That’s a bit of good news, Matt… Has anyone seen/heard anything about Johnson’s return to the senate?
“I lovelove baby kitties! but alas, don’t live close enough” :(
In this case it’s the thought that counts. ;0)
1,591 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Johnathan:
85th Evacuation Hospital, Qui Nohn Central Highlandz…haven’t seen er heard from anyone that served there except a couple a surgeons back in the 70’s. And yes, the openin’ shot of the Movie Mash made me come right outta my seat and take a few steps ta the rear…that was what I lived fer 12 months.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DO THE WORK, THERE ARE KIDS WHO ARE STILL DYIN’ OUT THERE!!
Loo Hoo. @ 118
I saw some of the greeting they gave him when he returned, did you see that?
tw3k @ 111
…serious rotisserie action, I’d like the honors for inserting the spit…!!!
Loo Hoo. @ 112
Loo Hoo,
FWIW, I’d suggest getting a Mac.
It’s superior to any PC in so many ways. Touch. Feel. Appearance. Performance.
Plus, with an intel chip, a Mac can run Windows program native.
tw3k @ 117
You have to render all that fat out slowly. I’d suggest a trough to catch all that stuff dripping off.
peanutbutter @ 124
candles and points of light come to mind…. hmmm.
Yes, Jonathan, I was bellyaching to the repair guy about the $1100. machine I got and overheard someone saying they spent $2300. on their Mac.
And again I kick myself. I knew I should have bought stock in Apple when it was $8 per share in the mid nineties.
Don’t if this has been talked about here already but….WHAT THE FUCK?!?!
I’ve been resisting the conspiracy talk but this is unbelievable! Under a Yahoo headline “bin Laden urges American to Convert:”
He also shows a grasp of current events, dropping mentions of global warming and saying Americans are “reeling under the burdens” of a mortgage crisis.
And he praises author Noam Chomsky, an early critic of the Iraq war, as well as Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA’s bin Laden unit, who has said poor U.S. leadership was losing the war against terrorist groups.
This is just one snippet out of many like this. As is bin Forgotten is a connoisseur of cable TV. Jeezus, this latest round of bin Laden video hype is absolute proof that it’s all a sham in my mind. Goddamn, we’ve got to stop these killers. NOW!
NorskeFlamethrower @ 120
And there are folks trying to keep the wounded alive out there too. Let’s bring them ALL home.
Thanks, Norske, for your service.
NorskeFlamethrower @ 120
Norske,
I served in the Nam, but more to the point:
I have a friend, my age, who served 1 year in I Corps as a navy nurse (he’s a he), dealing with marines coming in off the battlefield.
Unbelievable experience. 365 fucking days.

The problem with that is this bunch of incompetents don’t quite consider the area Asia…no one Bush meets in Iraq looks Japanese to him.
1,591 dayz and the killin’ goez on and on and..
Citizen Johnathan and the Firepup Patriots:
“You must be one tough individual.”
Not me, brother Johnathan, not me…but the Navy (”squid”) medics that got stuck with the 1st Marines in Chu Lie(sic) and Duc Pho and the Bong Son Plain before they moved up ta Hue…now those brothers were some tough sons a bitches. Our Evac served the Marines fer a few months 66-67 before the 1st Cav took over at Ahn Kah (can’t even remember how ta spell it…ain’t that a bitch) and I got ta take a swift boat up ta Chu Lie a couple a times ta deliver those folks some stuff from our “Mall of America” PX in Qui Nhon. Those Navy medics with the Jarheads are from a different species than the rest of us.
KEEP THE FAITH, WE OWE IT TO THOSE WHO DIDN’T GET BACK TA MAKE IT RIGHT THIS TIME!!
Hey Donita!! I m going to visit this site.. I really need to know new radios… by the way, my name is Felipe, I am from Brazil and your fan since I was 13 yo… now I m 28! :D
