According to Jay Carney, Fred the Lobbyist -- having had his hand forced by Lane Hudson -- is hoping that his reputation for being the wingnut's wingnut will carry him through the primaries:
Rather than build from one Iowa living room at a time, as Romney has, Thompson is trying to follow the Giuliani model -- focus on garnering high numbers in national polls and hypothetical head-to-head matchups with Democrats, thereby creating the impression that he'd be a strong general election candidate. The campaign hopes that once rank and file conservatives in states like Iowa and New Hampshire realize that Thompson is both a) a strong general election candidate, and b) more of a true conservative than either Romney or Giuliani, they will flock to Fred.
Which makes this a bit of a problem:
Ahead of tonight's Republican debate in New Hampshire, Ex-Sen. Fred Thompson is trying to pre-empt attacks on his Senate voting record.
After the Washington Times this a.m. published an article calling Thompson "soft" on immigration, the campaign released a memo calling Thompson "a consistent supporter of conservative immigration proposals." The memo does not mention the Washington Times piece, which called attention to "a series of votes in the 1990s against cracking down on illegal aliens. Those include a 1995 vote against limiting services other than emergency care and public education to illegal aliens — he was one of just six senators to oppose that proposal — and a 1996 vote against creating an employer verification system to help businesses filter out illegal aliens who apply for jobs."
Meanwhile Jim Gilcrist is playing the role of reluctant virgin. How long before the pilgrimage to the border begins in pursuit of that holy grail of the '08 GOP, the Minuteman endorsement?
(On a related note, Hubris Sonic says that McClatchy needs to ratchet down the rhetoric and get a better calculator.)

Yeah baby
Maybe the loose nukes were for Freddy! He can use them on the other candidates if his poll numbers tank!
Thompson is a joke.
But I’d take him (because I think he’s harmless) over all repubs and some dems.
near zed….
what’s happening in the debate?
Freddie of Hollywood is NOT doing himself any favors by blowing off the debate in New Hampshire for Jay Leno. And that is how he will avoid winning over those conservative voters in New Hampshire. The NH folks seem to be quite knowledgable and aware when they’re being dis’d.
Kickoff slogan for Fred:
Fred’s red, baby, Fred’s red.
Talking immigration. Rudy had sanctuary city blah blah blah
Lahoma tells me the smart money is on either Rudy/Freddy or Mitt/Fred. She’s not worried at this point about either ticket.
Huckabee will seal the border, but without malice.

I’ve been out today and just got to catch up a bit on earlier posts. re: Baird–I still can’t get over him being asked at his recent town hall meeting if he thought he would be re-elected in ‘08 and his reply was that he didn’t care.
I want to vote for a candidate who is a progressive/populist with a fire in the belly for speaking the truth and upholding the constitution. I want that person to step up for a primary run against Baird.
I’m on the lookout for that person. I just don’t know who it is yet.

Vitter is currently polling at about 60%-ish positive. Evidently the fact that he solicited a prostitute is not a problem. The fact that solicitation is a crime is not a problem. The fact that he cheated on his wife is not a problem. Folks are just thankful that he chose a woman instead of a man. Because then the hypocracy of covering for Vitter while throwing Craig under the bus would be soooo much harder to justify.
Considering some of the stuff that came out today regarding Louisiana politics, Vitter is yesterday’s news. He will be handily re-elected on a “family values” platform.

the republicans need to run on fear and hate in order to get people to vote for them
they need to claim;

brown, black, gay, whatever…they need demons to claim they are protecting their constituents from these demons and then they get loyal followers

OT..Rut Roh:
Sen. Ted Stevens has quietly steered millions of federal dollars to a sportfishing industry group founded by Bob Penney, a longtime friend who helped the Alaska Republican profit from a lucrative land deal, according to public records and officials from the state.
Critics say those earmarked federal dollars could be the first example of how Stevens rewarded Penney for a land deal in Utah that reportedly earned the senator more than $125,000. Penney’s group, for its part, rewarded Stevens with several expensive gifts at the time it was receiving the earmarked dollars.

Wow….all in one sentence!!! How do they do that?
Ron Paul pitches the hard hitting libertarian positions - withdrawal from the UN, Elimination of Social welfare (public schools too), Isolationism, legalization of drugs and prostitution and other sensible positions. Along with those positions comes getting out of Iraq, a focus on defense instead of offensive wars, cutting pentagon budget, cutting war profiteering, etc.
The hard line libertarian point of view is always interesting. The trouble is that it gets co opted and perverted by the Republicans in the same way the Green Party gets co opted and perverted by the Dem Party.
I guess if one were able to do all those libertarian things, we’d be lucky to have roads, police, firemen and streetlights. Its hard for the Republicans to debate Paul’s common sense conservatism.

You know, I always find this very interesting. We run a deficit, and even without the horrible levels of defense/war spending, we still have a deficit, which is nearly as much as the tax cuts we unfortunately passed.
But, because revenues are up slightly, tax cuts are the reason.

Now pouting republicans?
i’;m epu’d, but had to say……….
the link jane provided earlier to a wapo jeri thompson article makes me not worry so much about fred……..she is deeply involved in his strategy and campaign, and is a twit……..no worries there i think………..
saw snippets of his campaign spot when at relatives, i have only pbs……..he was nodding his head and swaying his head, a no-no………was nodding against what he was saying……he did it for emphasis, but someone should have told him it looks dishonest……..
body language ‘don’t lie’………and even people not educated in it can see it, human nature………instinctual….he’s toast…….and jeri will ‘advise’ him right into the dumpster…….shoulda just kept his job at law and order……..delusions of grandeur have been the fall of many a woman……..and her husband……..

Ah, I can tell you my 79 year old dad golfs 18 holes 3 times a week. Thompson looks 20 years older than my dad.

We’re doing a lot more than hanging in. We’re still six games up.

9/12 !!
Thompson reminds me alot of Lyndon Johnson, the way he talks, his demeanor and his stature. He seems to have that southern confidence that is so appealing but then we know from history what was going on in Johnnson’s head behind closed doors during a similar war.
I think the republicans are going to go for the shinier Romney in the end.
What was with all the leg slapping on the Leno bit? Can Ol’ Fred not talk without slapping his leg every third line? Was that his folksy grandpa routine?
