Repugs can’t sell their tried and true rhetoric. Smaller government and cutting spending. It was always a lie, but now no one will believe them. The fat cat R’s want to keep their tax cuts, but they don’t know how anyone is going to fix the deficit without raising taxes (on them!).
R voters aren’t real happy about the New World Order, either. That is – the outsourcing of jobs. Its affecting their own kin, now.

Bush is insane..
Bush, for his part, was not disposed to second-guessing. Througout 2006, he read historical texts relating to Lincoln, Churchill, and Truman – three wartime leaders, the latter two of whom left office to something less than public acclaim. History would acquit him, too. Bush was confident of that, and of something else as well. Though it was not the sort of thing one could say publicly anymore, the president still believed that Saddam had possessed weapons of mass destruction. He repeated this conviction to Andy Card all the way up until Card’s departure in April 2006, almost exactly three years after the Coalition had begun its fruitless search for WMDs. [p. 388]

They’re going to claim the surge is working and that they can begin to bring down the troop levels, slowly, all the way until 10/08 and they can claim that they ended it with the surge. This is the long term plan. They’re planning to take credit for ending the war and hoping that will get them back in power in 08

After all is Iran really a more represive regime than Saudi Arabia or is Iran just more anti American?

I feel for you. I’m in Baird’s district, which tends to be considered a conservative one. I think that if the Dems. that are representing you are not responding satisfactorily to their constituents, what needs to happen is to run a progressive candidate against the Dem. incumbant in the primary. I’d love to find someone to run here that I could really support, rather than just having to vote for an inadequate Dem. in order to keep a Republican from getting the seat.

My last phone conversation with Howie was one incredible experience. I don’t know how he keeps up with so many details on so many US House races.
He wants to make sure that Diane is more progressive than her primary challenger, Jake Metcalfe. Additionally, State Representative Ethan Berkowitz is supposed to announce his candidacy for Don Young’s seat very soon, according to a very credible source I worked with this afternoon. All three are fairly liberal, good people. Maybe Howie is weighing “electable.” I’m sure Mitch would agree that Benson is the most progressive of the three, but it is about 340 days until the Alaska Democratic Primary.
Metcalfe’s strategy so far has been to create fluff pieces at his blog, take no serious positions and have surrogates question Benson’s loyalty to the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, he’s runnig his campaign out of the Anchorage statewide office of IBEW, where he’s General Counsel and his campaign director is Communications Director. You can call the office and if you ask for Melinda Taylor, his campaign director, the operator asks if you want Melinda’s IBEW extension or her Jake campaign extension. Sheesh!

These are THEATRE nukes people. THAT is the take home message here. they top out at 150 KT, which is TEN TIMES more powerful than the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. THEATRE nukes take out ENTIRE ARMIES at once.
This is very very bad. I suddenly see where this is going and it is not good.
Let me explain:
a) Boosh has talked of “destroying the entire iranian military in three days with minimal us casualties”. Leaked news stores suggest “massive cruise missile bombardments” etc.
b) this is bullshit. you cannot take out hardened tank berms and aircraft shelters with conventional weapons and you certainly cannot neutralize a ground soldier heavy army that way. plus the high number of sorties against heavy WORKING anti-air defenses would mean heavy losses of aircraft and pilots. And with the carriers bottled up right next to iran, the danger from anti-ship missiles is extreme.
c) bush wanted to use nukes to destroy the iranian military in 2004. plans were drawn up.
d) this is the scary part. let’s assume bush has decided the only way to get his goal (total destruction of iranian military) is with theatre nukes. let’s also assume he wants to get them over there without the main brass knowing it and leaking it to the press.
e) his and cheney’s moles arrange for shipments on hard points just like “ordinary weapons” from the storage depot to the staging airbase for attacks in that part of the world (ME that is). None is going to notice BECAUSE WE DON”T SHIP NUKES THAT WAY. then those in on the plan quickly get them off the hard points and into storage for the real mission.
f) somebody got sick or careless and the scheme has been discovered. BUT WE DON”T KNOW HOW MANY WARHEADS (and what actual yields) ARE ALREADY IN PLACE!!!
yes i’m shouting. jeebus h keerist. this fool want’s to carpet bomb iran with nukes ten times bigger than those used on hiroshima.
Holy fucking fuck.

Well, thanks. My real Senator is Ron Wyden, and my Rep is Earl Blumenauer, and they usually represent me quite well, and they did so during the run-up to the war and they do so now, so I wouldn’t care to run anyone against them.
But by all means, against Baird. I’ll kick in some cash. And best to you and your district!

Okay, this one is just stupid and non-political. I knew a girl in college who made a poster about something on NPR–plastered it everywhere on campus: Natural Pubic Radio

Inspiring, isn’t it?

Well, that’s what it will take.
Look, it’s already clear that there will be 100k troops in Iraq when Chimpy is booed out of the White House in 2009. The Veto Sharpie and the moral blackmail will ensure it. But Democrats need to go into 2008 showing that they fought against Bush’s ‘leaving is losing’ grand strategy with every inch of their beings. And the elected ones in Congress, for the most part, don’t have the spine for that fight.
Haven’t read this whole thread, so forgive me if this has already been noted, but shouldn’t this be “Duh Bait” as in take the…?

I especially like “Now, Particularly Recherche.”

Bravo, Hackworth!
“Democrats Newly Willing to Compromise on Iraq”
this getting all surprised act in Lefty Blogistan is kind of old now, isnt it? The sellout of campaign rhetoric was pre-ordained, and geuss what? the same will happen in 08 and beyond, until Americans have more choices at the polls, and finally get a chance to vote against neo-con, war candidates.

what if it’s not a matter of spine, bokay?
what if, as in the Matrix, when the little boy monk says “there is no spoon” the truth is, there is no fight?
they are on the same team, they have the same goals of American world hegemony through military force, the ‘fight’ stuff is just for show.
Like in the WWF, they look like they are fighting, but the ‘face’, the good guy, is going along with the same script as the ‘heel’, the bad guy.
Any doubts? look at the near unanimous votes in Congress in support of the Cheney cabals’s next war, against Iran.
Then watch them pass the $50 billion, which will get diverted towards the next war, then really, who gives a sh*t about their various timetable for partial withdrawal plans?
I guess the Dems rode in on Nov. 2006 with nary an idea of why.
