Rudy Giuliani can’t get a firefighter to save his life.
Rudy wants you to think he’s an American hero. After all, he put an emergency response center in the middle of the biggest terror target in America. He also did not equip firefighters with essential communications equipment.
Everybody knows that, right? Just in case you’re behind, you should check out a series of videos authorized by The International Association of Firefighters telling us what a disastrous Mayor Rudy was.
Rudy’s desperate to cling to the tattered image he savored in the wake of 9/11. But it seems that he can’t even get a legal endorsement from any firefighters. The South Carolina Firefighters Association (not to be confused with the IAFF), a 501(c)3 organization apparently endorsed Rudy after some serious swooning by the (non) Hero himself at their State convention.
Shortly thereafter, the (non) Hero’s campaign released a “whopping” list of nearly 200 firefighters and first responders who support his fantabulous candidacy. The Executive Director of the aforementioned organization is the Co-Chair, representing his (c)3 organization with (illegal) pride.
Being from South Carolina, I really wanted to put this in perspective. I mean, nearly 200 first responders endorse Rudy. That sounds impressive. However, there are tens of thousands of first responders in SC. If you count the retired ones, it’s a much bigger ball of wax.
Now that nearly 200 sounds pretty pathetic doesn’t it? But, then again Giuliani is pretty pathetic. Does he even have a core set of values?

LANE!!
Only because I could’t remember who I’m contributing to at Blue America…
I’ll notify downstairs after I donate, then I’ll read your excellent post!
Hi all.
Pretty pathetic bunch these repuglicans.
Of course he does, they are just self-centered ones.
Hello Lane Hudson!
Welcome Lane, thanks for smacking down Tooliani some more.
AZ Matt @ 5
fixed it
Ghouliani was a sorry excuse for a mayor!
TexBetsy @ 8
Still grading papers are we TB? *g*
AZ Matt @ 10
Hope that’s OK :)
Heh, Nifong is Guilty!!!
Yes, yes he does have ‘values’ and some in S.C. such as ‘Heath Shuler, Bush Dog Democrat’ would no doubt tell you that he has ‘good’, ‘family’ values and like Rudy supporting Mr. Decider’s massive cluster-fuck in Iraq is not only the ‘right’ thing to do.
It’s the ‘Democrat’ Party way to being re-elected.
But then…like Mr. Ghoulianni…
They are full of shit.
Well, if you take out the ones that involve getting laid, no.
Fight breaking out on Facebook between Met and Yankee fans:

Pach is one of those whiny Met fans. You know the kind.
The real question isn’t Ghoul’s qualifications.
After all, shrub got elected, twice.
The question is whether MSM can generate revenue by promoting Ghoul.
I suspect they can.
If any politician was a hero the person wouldn’t be a political animal. They all remind me of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Great Stone Face which when peeled back is nothing more than Old Stony Phys.
Further evidence of the lack of in-depth knowledge people in either base have of their possible candidates. Note the approving attitude some of them have toward Giuliani:
Within G.O.P., Stumping Fails to Impress
Afterthought.
There are a lot of smart, well-educated, talented, and well-meaning folks here at FDL.
Same can be said for D.C., except substitute not-well-meaning for well-meaning.
Jonathan @ 16
And Lanny Davis’s buddy, Ted Olsen, is bundling contributions for Rudy.
In the time it would take me to call 200 cops and firefighters I know here in NY, I could easily get 200 NYC first repsonders who would vehemently oppose a Rudy run.
AZ Matt @ 5
GOP “rotten to the core” values.
punaise @ 22
Or the old Barney Frank line “Addams Family Values.”
james @ 21
That is funny. And true.
John Amato @ 15
I live north of Atlanta and my first love is the Red Sox. May they both lose.
John Amato @ 15
The Red Sox fans have shown up now, John.
Jane Hamsher @ 26
That’s what happens when ya don’t close the screen door all the way!
For all of the empty suits the GOP has thrown up, Rudy’s is by far the emptiest.
The man’s statements are reminiscent of King George in inanity, his policy statements could have been ripped from the pages of a poorly-written Gingrich book, and his constant claims that he acted nobly and bravely both during and after the attack on 9-11 ring ever hollower as the silly season continues.
I’ve seen better campaigning from 8th grade class presidential candidates. How long before another “key Giuliani” campaign worker is caught in some sort of sex-money-gay-bathroom-drug-dealing fiasco?
Prediction:
Today is 9/4/07.
Two years from today, FDL commenters will be really unhappy.
My only point: This is a dark age. Look beyond what we are served.
Um, is this THE Lane Hudson who’s blogging here? The same one I mentioned in my letter to HRC when I told them they weren’t getting any more of my money?
A.Citizen @ 13
Isn’t Heath Shuler from North Carolina?
Whiny? Yeah, me and our late friend Steve, the “whiny” types. That’s us!
Great post, Lane! Welcome to FDL.
IIRC, in typical republican fashion, Rudy cut pay and benefits for firemen in NYC and aided union-busting endeavors. The only firemen that would support Rudy would be children of republicans wearing toy firehats for photo ops.
I have a question for Rudy Giuliani.
Mr. Giuliani:
Are you planning to participate in any future False Flag Terror events and if so will you be wearing panties?
quaker girl at 17 says-”If any politician was a hero the person wouldn’t be a political animal. They all remind me of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Great Stone Face which when peeled back is nothing more than Old Stony Phys.”
he reminds me of the painting ‘the scream’
was just telling my dad last week when i visited, i can’t get past the fact that he gives me the creeps…….always has…….can’t describe him in any other way, he gives me the major creeps………

Stop thinking like a Cambodian boat person, mon frere.
Two years from today we’ll all be in the same camp talking to ourselves in inanities, getting ready to be shipped out to Paraguay to harvest the Bush family sugar crops.

You are very kind to ask. I’m fine. Just un-hopeful about the future. In particular, for my 24-year-old daughter.
Thanks much, Lane.
Hi {{{Jane}}}! Hope you’re doing well. ;->
I was about to apologize for being OT, but figure it’s a matter of perspective at this point….
Lar. Craig now says he may fight [for honor and country and, woo hoo, gawdknows what] to reclaim his seat.
Does this give a new vision altogether to “trophy wife”???! That poor gal!!!
Then there’s the trophy-tody Specter, Huzzah!
Will there EVER be any doubt about him and his loyalties in the future? Puleeze NO!
’scuse. gonna sign off a’fore i ……
HOW do those types a pugs LIVE with themselves?!
No, don’t tell me. My parents were proud R’s who just happened (heh) to raise a !DEM! who never looks back except to try to understand how the honest ones among them think. That part’s sad, and more complicated than figuring out the skunks out & about today.
Dang. Can’t get away with that either. Real skunks are very respectable, albeit ultra-sensitive, personalities.
The current stable of repugs are near-hopeless…
BTW Chris Shays is on the NewsHour saying that it’s outrageous that people are calling the dog and pony show a dog and pony show. He also says the “surge” is working and that Anbar “has been cleaned up.” He says that Democrats and Republicans can’t agree in this country so we shouldn’t blame the Kurds, Shia, and Sunni when they don’t.
OMG they also have Brian Baird. If we withdraw al Qaeda will take over.
They do have Schakowsky to inject a little sanity but it is 3 against 1. So f*cking typical of the NewsHour and its sense of balance.
OT- Watching The News Hour this evening could compel you to destroy your television.
Frank Probst @ 30
That would be the one.

They have gone over to the dark side. Drunk the koolaid, jumped the shark, bought and sold themselves, become Bush cheerleaders. They are so far beyond lame and are boldly moving into the Michael Gordon realm of shameless shilldom.

I write a newsletter.
I know my audience, so I know how to write it.
Here on FDL, so many more smart people than me.
I love it.
Core set of values? Hahahaha.
Judy’s core values:
1. More power for me.
2. Squash anyone who gets in the way of #1.
3. Say and do anything to achieve #1 and #2.
4. Fear fear fear.
5. Hate hate hate.
5. Greed greed greed.
You know, Republican family values.
CTuttle @ 51
They had 2 Democrats and 2 Republicans. Schakowsky and Baird, and Shays and Boustany. 3 war supporters and 1 war critic. I have to say Schakowsky did well responding clearly and factually to all of their lunacy.
Meanwhile the moderator Judy Woodruff just lets it all blow by. She interviewed Michael Gordon last night which gives you some idea that when the NewsHour looks for someone serious they mean Serious in the Glenn Greenwald sense.
Does he even have a core set of values?
Ans: No.
Partial credit for: Yes: “Rudy”
Um … has anyone mentioned to the South Carolina fire folks that a 501c(3) organization is prohibited under the IRS regs from endorsing a candidate? Or maybe they got a legal opinion from Gonzo.
Jonathan @ 42
Cheer up, buddy.
My eleven year old son has taken to watching the military channel. When I asked him why he looked at me and without skipping a beat said “You have to know how they work so you can break them.”
There’s hope.
Hugh @ 56
*gah* I’ve been watching the Newshour religiously since Chet had passed on…!!!
The cross-eyed oreo is on Tweety saying it’s cool for the prez to make some dough off his great presidency.
SkepticRising @ 58
Gonzo is the Go To Guy for just this occasion.
Hugh @ 56
Schakowski and Baird? They had to find one of the handful of Lieberdems in the House? Where’s “freedom fries” Taylor to represent the anti-war Republicans?
Apparently PBS is well and truly whipped by the wingers. Three to one ratio of war supporters to opponent, the precise opposite of what is found in the country. No wonder I never watch the News Hour anymore. Thank God for Olbermann.
Watching PBS/New hour reminds me of what some women do in Mexico.
A Protest Built on Pots and Pans in Oaxaca
BTW US crude oil is up to $75/bbl. This despite the fact that hurricane Felix is going to hit Latin America and miss the Gulf of Mexico completely.

Wait, it only gets better, “I’ve served in public service all my life…” :P
Ron Christie is the next Tearoom Victim.
Post-Mortem America
Tomorrow is here. The game is over. The crisis has passed — and the patient is dead. Whatever dream you had about what America is, it isn’t that anymore. It’s gone. And not just in some abstract sense, some metaphorical or mythological sense, but down in the nitty-gritty, in the concrete realities of institutional structures and legal frameworks, of policy and process, even down to the physical nature of the landscape and the way that people live.
The Republic you wanted — and at one time might have had the power to take back — is finished. You no longer have the power to keep it; it’s not there. It was kidnapped in December 2000, raped by the primed and ready exploiters of 9/11, whored by the war pimps of the 2003 aggression, gut-knifed by the corrupters of the 2004 vote, and raped again by its “rescuers” after the 2006 election. Beaten, abused, diseased and abandoned, it finally died. We are living in its grave.
Hugh @ 65
When, do you predict, oil prices will reach higher prices?
Dallasdoc @ 55
Hi Dallasdoc, welcome.;)
Ron Christie had the friggin CHUTZBAH to say he served his country, insinuating that his service is at the same level as our brave soldiers who are fighting this illegal disgusting war. He should be BANNED from any show except Fox noise of course. And you are right that he is the next tea-room casualty.

It’s all ready slammed Nicaragua
OT but fun
A complete divulgence, or perhaps a better word would be investigation of Rudy the G’s rather secretive business dealings might prove interesting. The impression is that somewhere hidden in some bus station locker, Rudy has ‘luggage’ stored. I’d like to get at it. I’m thinking Bernie Kerik here.
Jonathan @ 77
I respect your doubt, but this is MY country. I will not leave; I will not give up; I will not hand it over to greedy and unprincipled people. I will fight with everything I can to stop this rape of my country and its values. I will not bend or break. Here I stand. Today and tomorrow. It’s MINE.

Woohoo, nothing I like better than crying Giants fans. They are only outdone by anti-freedom, anti-American Yankee fans, although I must admit, that watching the Phils chew up the Mets last week almost had me wearing their hat again.
But no, back to old Dodger Blue.

What can I say? I hope you, james, raven, and others here can carry the ball across the goal line. I’ll participate and not be just a watcher. But I’m a realist.

Jonathan @ 69
With the first bomb that drops on Iran, you can probably add $50/bbl to the current price.
There really is no surface reason for why crude oil should have been in the $70 plus range all summer. There have been no wars, no hurricanes, and no significant stoppages to the oil flow but prices have remained high. I suppose you could point to a weak dollar. Against this you could put up a cooling in the economy. The one would seem to counterbalance the other.
Instead I have been wondering if this isn’t part of something more fundamental, a reaction to long term sustained tighter supplies due to peak oil. So in short prices may fluctuate but the days of cheap oil are over and are going to stay over.
jonathan at 42 says-”You are very kind to ask. I’m fine. Just un-hopeful about the future. In particular, for my 24-year-old daughter.”
well, STOPIT………. i used to ask people, what would you do/think if you were nineteen?????????
you would be filled with hope, and ideas…………want that for her…..offer a way forward, it’s ok to be skeptical, and not so positive, but offer a way forward with it………..my dad is an fdr democrat, a realist, a corporate accountant, honest, retired, always offers straight-up advice, pulls no punches, but i would never say that he is negative, cuz he always offers what is happening with what is possible…….and i love him for it………it’s not always as bleak as people would like you to think………drive her on with a positive view of what is happening and what is possible, that’s what my dad offers me……….

SkepticRising @ 58: You beat me to it. The NC group is violating their 501(c)(3) standing by endorsing RG. But with this administration I doubt the IRS is going to investigate and do anything about it. After all it’s okay if you’re a republican (or endorsing one).

Me either. I was willing to die when I was 18….I’ve got diabetes, cancer, and am 57, hell, I’m even more willing now!!

why is there not a place to call for this???????????

i call bullshit……….you are our resource, a period of experience that being born in a different year, i don’t have……i’m 48 and female….my best friend is older, and added a lot to my knowledge, she even wrote a novel about a viet vet, but through no fault of my own, i just missed it…..i took on a job that was non-traditional, and vietnam vets were mostly the ones that took me under their wings and trained me…….and i was good at it, so i earned their respect……..and they told me things they didn’t tell anyone…….so i learned, and listened, and learned some more……..
you aren’t allowed to ‘die’ yet……..nope……not………i still learn from you, so you’re not allowed to get so jaded that you fade away, definitely not allowed………….
and jonathan i left you a message about fathers and leading on at 103………my dad had his own demons, but he’s never let me down on summing up what is going on, and what can be done from here.
i expect no less from you all……….so, getting disgusted from what is going on? ok, well, ok………..but it’s not right……….not by a longshot, and you all, of all people, should know better…………..
hugs all around…….then get back to business………..
