Somehow I can’t see Harry Reid letting that slip through, but maybe in the House they’d do it. Even if it was just something symbolic like “National Gay Love Week” or The Gay Business Development Act.

Snarkiness would be hard to hide, but it would certainly have all the Repubs pointing fingers at each other.

Yeah I did see that. I try to read Sirota every day as he keeps on top of things here in the Mountain West. Pretty disgusting, but really no terribly surprising. You have no idea just how whacko Montana Republicans are (let’s just say Conrad Burns is one of our saner specimens). At one point in the last legislative session (which meets every two years) the Republicans in the Stat House (where they hold a one seat majority) stripped ALL K-12 education funds from the state budget.

I’m guessing none of them is a school teacher when not a legislator. Does none of them have a child? Are they all aliens from some other planet (or maybe Idaho)?

What’s their idea, that education just leads people to becoming Democrats?

Sounds like a Democratic landslide in the making, but as you say, they may be a little wacko up there.

1) Larry Craig, may in fact, be able to withdraw his guilty plea.

2) Larry Craig has been calling some other senator’s CELL PHONE thinking it is his lawyer’s. You can’t make this stuff up. Said senator has gone public (anonymously for now) with the details.

3) The “misdirected” cell message indicates that Arlen Specter has been secretly setting Craig up even BEFORE his “I intend to resign” press conference.

4) A number of TPM readers spotted this even before it broke nationally.

Craig can, of course, REQUEST that the judge set aside his guilty plea and reconsider the conviction. But the judge will not be very happy about it, and need not do so. He would need to have a VERY GOOD reason…such as the possibility that Craig is incapable of understanding his legal rights. Given that Craig was read his Miranda rights, and called the Police subsequently, telling TWO different officers that he needed the name and phone number of the Prosecuting Attorney “for my legal firm” it seems he was well aware of his ability to challenge the police claims, and use legal counsel.

I suspect he, in fact, did. It would be very interesting to see what the D.A.’s office says about who contacted them regarding Craig’s case…was it Craig, or a lawyer? And given the fact that Craig submitted a lawyerly PLEA form…it would seem that someone did in fact obtain this from the D.A.

I don’t think that the Governor can “forcibly evict” Craig from his seat. Craig has to leave voluntarily, and only then is there the capability for the Governor to appoint a replacement.

The SENATE CAN, after a ethics hearing, censure or evict Craig from his seat…but this would require more than just the Republicans. They cannot throw him out of his seat…only the Senate as a whole can do so.

They could turn him out of their Caucus and declare him a “Non-Republican”. They have already removed him from his Committee positions. Why the Ranching and Mining interests in Idaho would want such a weakened figure in power is beyond my understanding.

Personally I hope that he stays until the bloody aftermath and runs for office again…perhaps even against the Republican nominee that follows him. He could scream how he was “railroaded”, how the Party didn’t treat confessed diaper-perv. David Witter in the same way, and how it’s well-known that the leadership of the Party is filled with closeted gays.

And if the Democrats can find a decent, populist candidate to run they may actually take back the seat long held by Frank Church.

I wonder if people like Picabo Street, the former Secretary of State Larry Echohawk, or former NFL Quarterback (and Idaho native) Jake Plummer. Also that guy from CSI is from Idaho.

I don’t know if any of these folks are Democrats (other than Echohawk)…but they appear to be a lot saner than what Idaho has recently offered.
