It’s Labor Day weekend. Let’s take a little time and talk about what we’d like to see — priorities, leadership, legislation. You name it. What’s your wish list?

I’d like to see a complete stop on all posturing on Iran.
Too much?
No pre-emptive attack on Iran.
Steve-AR @ 1
Pessimism much? :-)
I would like to see a return to the rule of law.
Once we were a nation of laws, not men.
That would be nice, very nice.
Stay away from Iran.
Obey and Honor the Constitution and uphold your responsibilities and duties.
IT’S KEANU’S BIRTHDAY!!!!!
restoration of habeus corpus
unambiguous repudiation of torture
return to geneva convention
purging and restoration of DoJ
impeachment (or criminal trial at this point, I suppose) of Gonzales and Rove
impeachment of Cheney
edwards to win nomination
…i’m a greedy little git, I suppose?
Has anyone seen this?

Scottish Haggis himself said he thinks Craig should not resign, and in fact try to clear his name. I wonder why Snarlin’ Arlen would do that for? The GOP got Craig tossed out. I doubt Idaho wants him back. Does he really think a judge is gonna let Craig back out? Does Craig really want to go through the embarassment of a trial? Given that Snarlin’ Arlen used to be a DA, I have to wonder what he’s trying to do here.
peanutbutter @ 4
After reading the following..pessimism is to mild a word.
From Kos:
I asked her about the attack, how limited and so forth.
“I don’t think it’s limited at all. We are shipping in and assigning every damn Tomahawk we have in inventory. I think this is going to be massive and sudden, like thousands of targets. I believe that no American will know when it happens until after it happens. And whatever the consequences, whatever the consequences, they will have to be lived with. I am sure if my father knew I was telling someone in a news organization that we were about to launch a supposedly secret attack that it would be treason. But something inside me tells me to tell it anyway.”

The Beach Boys. Saw these guys more times than I count in the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in the early to late sixties. Was anyone else there?
I just want it to stop.
i’d like to see dems become more aggressive in battling back the excesses of bushco and the restoration of civil liberties taken under the guise of “terrorism”
I’d like to see the candidates for president stand up for the Constitution and restoring checks and balances. Only Dodd so far has made it one of his campaign planks. It is unacceptable that the rest haven’t joined him in this.
Bob in HI
yikes! just had an earthquake here… right behind the house on the San Andreas fault…
I’d like to see a return to and improved respect for the Constitution. I was previewing videos yesterday to show my 6th graders about what the Constitution is and how it works and was just thoroughly depressed by most of them, because that’s not how our country is working right now.
OldCoastie @ 15
I’m in Costa Mesa and haven’t felt anything.
bobschacht @ 14
Everyone needs to read this, and pass it on.

It’s well written, concise, and to the point.
Lea-no uh @ 17
yup – I’m right on top of it… apparently a 4.7
Public financing of all elections.
Criminalization of any corporate bribes to politicians in the form of lobby group campaign contributions or gifts.
Complete destruction and banishment for eternity of the rightwing propaganda machine known as the American news media.
Watching these clowns in charge is like seeing a parent who gives the keys to his Ferrari over to the 16 yr old and says GO, and refuses to take them back, no matter the mahem.
It’s well past time for Congress to simply take the keys back. De-fund the government. Period. Really. How much worse off would America be, versus attacking Iran?
Oddly enough, on my crappy little blog that not even I read, I yesterday said …
peanutbutter @ 8
all of that, plus a seven game losing streak for the Phillies. This NL East race has gotten far too interesting for my taste.
OldCoastie @ 15
One of these days Folsom Dam is going to break from one of these things. I grew up below the dam, on the banks of the American River. Are you near Sac?
Public financing of elections (paper ballots) and
Quite limited time for political campaigning
and
everything else will follow
otherwise
nothing is changed, can change
nah OKK, I’m in So Cal, up against the Santa Ana mountains and about 4 miles from the San Andreas fault… the earthquake centered about 6 miles from my house… worriesome because it might be a fore shock… think I’ll go to the store and pick up a few gallons of water…
OldCoastie @ 19
Felt a nice little jolt here in Orange about 15 minutes ago.
OldCoastie @ 19
I didn’t feel it either, but a few people did. (Santa Ana area)
Save klsd progressive radio programming in San Diego. Clear Channel wants to dump Air America. They tried to dump it in Madison Wisconsin. Please go to http://www.saveklsd.com and sign the petition to save our progressive voice. Clear Channel owns all the big stations in Central Florida and serves up nothing but right wing crap.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 9
See Jane’s post on Craig yesterday. It looks like “Republicans of conscience,” such as they are, supporting each other against WH strong-arm tactics?

Stop the Theocracy presently ruling the United States.
I think we need a refocus on what it means to be a liberal in this country a liberal of the old school. We need “someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people – their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties – someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad; if that is what they mean by a “Liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.” – John F. Kennedy”
That said, we need John Edwards.
peanutbutter @ 28
got a call from Huntington Beach and they felt it… probably depends what kind of soil you are on.
since you guys have the big stuff covered, I’ll indulge myself: I’d like a prohibition on the use of any audio, visual, printed, digital, satellite, telepathic or other mode of communication whatsoever for the transmission of bullshit. “Bullshit” shall include, but not be limited to, any sentence that combines the words “Iraq” and “progress”; the words “Republican” and “truth”; or the words “Bush,” “Cheney,” “administration,” and/or “White House,” and “said.”
EPU’ed from last thread:
Madmommy was wondering how we Californians can be so blase about earthquakes.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but for me that is totally a front. Earthquakes scare the livin’ s**t out of me. I grew up in the Northeast, where you nearly always get 12 hours advance notice before a natural disaster (blizzard, hurricane, flood). The lack of advance warning and randomness of earthquakes, I have never gotten used to and probably never will. And don’t get me started on the subject of fires.
peanutbutter @ 8
yes to all, and me, too!
btw, I’m doing Air America radio this afternoon at 5 pm ET on Sam Seder’s show. FYI…
Medicare for everyone.
I would like to have each senator and congressman read their oath out loud before every public appearance.
Kill the defense industry
Kill government secrecy
Workers bill of rights (all workers, even illegals)
Public camapaign finance
Health care for all
Full force of American ingenuity directed at easing global warming and dramatically changing our relationship with oil.
Full investigation and accountability for this current criminal cabal.
Return of the fairness doctrine and strong net neutrality legislation passed.
burns – I grew up with the earthquakes… most of ‘em don’t bother me, but this one did… I’m on bedrock which normally leads to lots of jerking but this one felt more like it was “in the air” – like a bomb went off… when I lived in Long Beach, it was like standing in a bowl of jello due to the alluvial fill nature of the soil… at least my house is new enough that it is bolted to the foundation… you got a little bit softer soil there in Orange – makes the whole experience much more dramatic.
The immediate concern is the possible air attack on Iran which I fear Congress won’t address.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 37
Awesome. I’m gonna listen on the computer. No Air America radio available in Central Florida. Please everyone sign the petition at http://www.saveklsd.com to keep Air America burning in San Diego. Its real quick.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 37
Can’t wait to hear you!
What I would like to see re Labor Day – some serious consideration of the mess we are making for future U.S. labor with current policy shifts. Bob Herbert did a terribly sad op ed piece (Saturday?) on how little the labor force now entering the market can expect in terms of retirement, insurance etc. With salaries down, living costs up, how are they expected to get enough to retire with, much less to invest in housing, college education for their kids, and health care.
earthquakes–it is like lightning…do you worry about that?
If it became obsessive, you would leave. that’s what a friend of mine did after the quake in SF that dropped the Nimitz freeway. She went all the way to Iowa.
I live in the south.
Eureka Springs @ 39
The only one of these I’d take issue with is the defense industry, which should be directed towards defense, not profiteering from un-necessary wars.
/jumped straight to the comment fo1rm without reading the comments so I don’t know if this is mentioned yet;
since it’s labor day this is some of my labor wish lists off the top of my head, I’m sure I have others;
1)tariff any product that comes from a country that doesn’t have collective bargaining
2)dissallow corporate personhood, revoke money as speech
3)dissallow calling someone a manager to circumvent labor law protocol
4)labor must fund health care…period…all american require health care and it needs to be part of the salary, we cannot afford those that refuse to purchase health care therefore we must force every american to have ti…the only way to do this is to force employers to provide it
I have no problem with this cost being part of the salary but it must be included for an employer to hire even one person
I’m leaving so by the time I think of others to add this thread will be long old
have good holiday evah bodah

Oddmommy, dude. (dang, I knew this mommy stuff was gonna get confusing sooner or later).
But thanks for responding! That 1999 quake I experienced was really a life-changer for me…..I mean, I always assumed that a solid earth was something you could take for granted.
I was on a boondoggle in Palm Springs at the time, and totally fell in love with Joshua Tree National Park, to which I quietly slipped away during the hours in which I was officially attending seminars. However, the day after the quake, when I returned there and climbed to the top of a pile of rocks, I suddenly remembered there were these things called “aftershocks”……

I’d like care for the poor, the ill, the hungry, and the homeless to get at least as much attention as care for the financial services industry, the insurance industry, and the military/industrial complex.
No, strike that.
I’d like care for the poor, the ill, the hungry, and the homeless to get much more attention than is given to the financial services industry, the insurance industry, and the military/industrial complex. Much, much more.
EPU’ed from last thread:
Maybe they could give this some snappy title like “Shock and Awe”.
I have written on this several times. First, a massive aerial campaign would not last 3 days.
Think of the first Gulf War. The bombing campaign began on January 17, 1991 and the ground war did not start until February 24, 1991. The objective of this campaign was not to destroy Iraq’s military but to soften it up. Iraq’s forces at the time were highly concentrated in and near Kuwait. Also take into account that Iraq was a country of about 25 million then vs. Iran’s 68 million now and that Iraq is 169,285 sq. miles in size vs. Iran’s 636,300 sq. miles.
The US Navy will not be able to guarantee the safety of shipping using the Straits of Hormuz or in the Persian Gulf. Insurance writers will not insure vessels, probably not even at astronomical rates. Tankers will not move. The oil will not flow. Oil markets know this. Upon the first attack on Iran oil will spike. If the attack is a large one, oil prices will go at least to the $120/bbl level and could easily double in price to around $150/bbl. Can you say worldwide recession?
An attack on Iran would greatly complicate our situation in Iraq. It could turn the majority Shia definitively against us. Attacks against US troops could increase significantly and our supply lines through the Shia South could be cut to pieces.
A 3 day attack does not take into account how long the Iranian response. That could last considerably longer, as in years. Hezbollah could strike out at Israel. Israel would strike back at Lebanon which would probably destroy the current Lebanese government and could also plunge Lebanon back into civil war. Israel might also attack Syria which would only further serve to turn an attack on Iran into a regional war.
Iran could also increase attacks in Afghanistan and destabilize an already shaky government.
While the Iranians are Shia, the wider Moslem world would likely see this as yet another attack on it. This could increase attacks on US and Western interests from North Africa to Indonesia and the Philippines.
And, of course, this would be a boon to international terrorism.
Not to mention the further alienation of our closest allies. It would be rejected by the Europeans. The Japanese will not thank us if oil prices go through the roof. The Chinese will be angered by our undermining their economic development. And the Russians (who still have all those nukes and ICBMs to carry them) will go further into Cold War mode.
Have I forgot some things? Probably but I think you get the picture. Do I think that given all this Bush and Cheney would still do it? You bet.
Shear altruism. Doing what’s best for the country. Right?
GOP touts swift action on Craig

uhhh.hh….for starters:
Bush and Cheney in the dock at the Hague.
Single payer health care.
Concerted initiatives against greenhouse gas emitting fuels.
A return to Constitutional sanity.

hmmm…..why do I hear John Lennon playing his piano right about now….?
I’d like to not find out exactly how right Hugh @ 54 is.
(And my own two cents is that Hugh’s vision is a least-worse case scenario, not the most likely scenario. IMHO, a more realistic assessment would replace almost every “could” and “might” in his post with “would” and “will.”)
Hugh @ 54
via the Principle of Charity, assume Bu’ush truly believes all this messianic Churchillian vanity stroking he’s been given and consequently believes that [1] Iran must be neutralized, and that [2] he’s the only dude with the balls to do it, so it simply cannot be left to a next administration. Moreover, give the worldwide shitstorm that would ensue, maybe he could then arrange that there not be a next administration. Failing that, it would tie the hands of any next administration, bequeathing to it the horrific mess he sees as so necessary.
Steve-AR @ 10
Dear God.
One of the sentences in the DailyKos article: ‘Bush has become something of an Emperor.” Or Tsar or Decider or King or whatever else you want to call those persons who have haunted the human race since we learned how to make nations.
I just came in from a walk. In a small meadow that ought to have been alive with butterflies and dragonflies, there was a single Arginnis, one of the big Silver-spots. I watched it for a quarter-hour through binoculars, going from bloom to bloom on the thistles. Then I watched the minnows in the brook for a while. The thought would not leave that this might be the last summer I would see, that there would be an early nuclear winter this year, as Russia and other nations did everything they could to eliminate the United States — for many reasons — from the earth.
Dan Gerstein, a centrist Democrat and strategist, said: “The reality is both parties are brain-dead — they have no new big ideas to deal with the challenges we face today. Which is why I continue to believe that there is an opening for an independent, reform-oriented campaign to run against politics as usual and on a solutions-driven message.”
no more, I beg of you…pulEz!
I’d like to see the Republic Party shrink back to annoying minority party status where they belong.
I’d like to see the Bush family lose all political clout.
TheOtherWA @ 3
It is perhaps a technical point but an attack on Iran would not be pre-emptive but preventive. A preventive strike is a war crime and essentially synonymous with waging an aggressive war. A pre-emptive strike or war is sanctioned under international law. The two examples I use are Israel in 1967 when it had several armies massed against it at its borders and Germany in 1939 when it invaded Poland.
So did the ground stop shaking in So.Cal?
Hugh @ 54
This is what puzzles me; Cheney is a satanic bastard, for sure, but how does he gain from the wholesale destruction of the global economy? He doesn’t do anything that won’t line his pockets, and this won’t.
petwrecker @ 62
The “both parties are the same” lie is promoted by Republics to justify how truly corrupt they are.
JPL @ 65
not yet, we’ve had 8 quakes in the last 45 minutes.
Hugh @ 64
actually, I think that is a very important point, not a technical one. A single word can indeed make a world of difference.
Badwater @ 67
bingo! and lieber. putz! at the helm!
Hugh says I have written on this several times. First, a massive aerial campaign would not last 3 days.
Joe Sixpack can live with three days. So they’re lying about three days:
Three days I dread to see arrive three days I hate to be alive
Three days filled with tears and sorrow yesterday today and tomorrow
There are three days I know that I’ll be blue
Three days that I’ll always dream of you
And it does no good to wish these days would end
Cause the same three days start over again
Three days that I dread be alive three days that I hate to see arrive
Three days filled with tears and sorrow yesterday today and tomorrow
There are three days…
Three days that I dread to see arrive…
Three days three days
OldCoastie @ 68
and you are still at your computer??
Once again, my solid earthocentric self is in awe.
oh i forgot this… not another quagmire in iran…what? we need to slaughter more humans cuz bushco is upset that his junta is failing and his boyz are bailing on his crazy ass….
Hugh @ 64
The current power holders in the US are more similar to those in 1939 Germany than to those in 1967 Israel. With Bush/Cheney in charge, any pre-emptive military action will fail.
I wonder of most people realize the ramifications of Bibi returning as PM of Israel.
This is what puzzles me; Cheney is a satanic bastard, for sure, but how does he gain from the wholesale destruction of the global economy? He doesn’t do anything that won’t line his pockets, and this won’t.
maybe he finally has enough money and/or just doesn’t care anymore.
Attacking Iran is, I believe, the biggest single motivation of Cheney’s life now.

That’s one way that some folks read it.
A much more conventional reading of the book of Revelation is that it was written to provide hope to those suffering under the oppression of the Roman Empire, and by extension, to anyone under the oppression of an imperial ruler.
Emperors do not come off well in Revelation, no matter what country they rule. That’s something Bush might want to keep in mind.
Mikey @ 83
I’m quoting my own link in case it was too small to see. It’s a pretty important read imo. x_x
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 9
At this point, Craig doesn’t have much to lose. (Unless, of course, he gets hit with a perjury charge.)
I think that this case pits the Evangelicals against the die-hard libertarians, who don’t want to see the cops flashing their badges under bathroom stalls, no matter what the circumstances. These are the “well, he really didn’t do anything overtly sexual” people. In principle, I tend to agree, and I’ve said before that if this case had gone to trial, and I was on the jury, I’d probably vote for “not guilty”.
That being said, I think that stings like this are highly effective, because the vast majority of people that get busted really were there to have sex in the bathroom, and almost all of them will plead out rather then go to trial. They will then refrain from cruising that bathroom, and when word gets out that the cops are sitting in there (literally), so will most everyone else. From the standpoint of eliminating public sex in a well-travelled restroom, the sting does what it’s supposed to do.
Lea-oh nu – if you are all the way up in L.A., you are about 70 miles north of me – you probably can’t feel them up there…. fyi – the Lake Elsinore and Rancho Santa Margarita quakes are the same spot essentially – prolley a half mile apart.
jayt @ 87
I’m no Bill Frist, but I’d guess that he’s suffering from multi-infarct dementia. That’s when a series of small strokes slowly wipes out your brain. It fits with his history of personality change a few years ago, and it’s consistent with a man who’s had several heart attacks.
I just want to see the insanity stop.
well, we are up to 10 quakes – I think I should go take my shower and go to the grocery store for some non-perishables…

Although you might expect motor impairment over time as well as cognitive deficits. I think the thing that most people who have known Cheney in the past have noted is a change in personality, especially increased paranoia.
Focus on electing as many new progressive people to Congress next year as possible. I am bad at long range planning, but am saving some bucks for contributions.
I know this new Democratic Congress has been frustrating, and there needs to be some accountability, espicially from some new memebers who were elected because of strong positions they took on Iraq, war on terror, importance of constitutional government.
But emphasis should be on supporting as many new progressives as possible for Congres next year. That will keep emphasis positive, and if it is necessary to threaten not supporting some people who have gone back on their word, then there will be positive and useful alternative uses for the money and effort available.
Also, the vision thing. I have been very disturbed to find that a ‘PNAC light’ vision of some BS ‘American empire’ and ultimatim as first and violence as second resort has become mainstream. I think some emphasis on sound principles for the US would be useful.
I am so glad Kennedy was mentioned early above. I would love to hear someone with vision and hope and (imagine) the ability to speak. We have lost so much in reality and so much hope for the future. Where is a hero? If a true leader comes forth, maybe the Dems really could get on board/organized in a way to be effective and counter this stuff that keeps happening.
President Gore’s inauguration, please.
While looking for Craig’s change of plea form on the web, I found this:
“Very likely, a lawyer would have gotten one of those dispositions . . . and Craig could have said, ‘I never admitted I did anything wrong,’ ” said Stephen M. Simon, a professor at the University of Minnesota law school who runs a legal defense clinic that represents indigent inner-city men charged with prostitution and indecent exposure, among other crimes.
“A lot of these men . . . are horribly embarrassed,” Simon said. “That explains the dynamics of him not going to a lawyer.”
NOTE TO DUMBASS U.S SENATOR: Only fools fail to retain an attorney in a criminal case!

wangdangdoodle @ 96
From a person with that name? Somehow I believe you.
We need more than sincere intelligent people devising our foreign policy just now. We need it to be articulated to the American people, so we will know whether to support it or let our government know we reject it.
There is a terrible imbalance of effective power in America. We see it in the wealth disparity and in some other things, but it is manifest in governance in things like Cheney’s energy policy discussions behind closed doors and even more normally in the formulation of America’s bi-partisan foreign policy. I fear our middle East adventurism is entirely the result of a bi-partisan decision. And, as the Clinton administration was recent, I want to know if Bill Clinton (and Hillary Clinton) were involved in the formulation of a policy which has us today at war in the Middle East.
We need a clear vision of how to achieve our nation’s goals, how to maintain the great nature of our nation and how to help our friends abroad without harming ourselves. I don’t see that happening because of an imbalance of power, from the hands of the people to the hands of a few select who work secretly, in a very un-Democratic way to control and steer our country towards dangerous waters.
America needs a new, well articulated intelligent foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East, which the American public can accept.
