I guess Lanny Davis can’t have all the fun when it comes to making really stupid recommendations for the recently opened AG slot:
LITTLE ROCK (AP) – U.S. Senator Mark Pryor says that he’s comfortable with the idea of Asa Hutchinson as a potential attorney general. But Pryor said today that the former congressman’s role in prosecuting former President Clinton’s impeachment case could harm his chances.
You’re kidding me, right?
At least Pryor notes that Hutchinson’s history as one of the House prosecutors during the Clinton impeachment “would be an obstacle with some lawmakers,” according to the article. No shit.
But forget about people like me, for a moment, whose teeth still hurt at the very thought of that three ring circus Hutchinson conducted. Do we need a refresher course about the story that paved the road for Alberto Gonzales’ trip to pink slip city? A little thing called the US Attorney’s scandal:
At the federal courthouse in Springfield, [attorney Thomas] Carver is seeking information about communication that two former U.S. attorneys for the Western District of Missouri, Bradley Schlozman and Todd Graves, might have had with former undersecretary of the Department of Homeland Security Asa Hutchinson. He’s not alleging corruption, Carver says, but like the Democrats seeking the paper trail that led to the politically motivated firings of several U.S. attorneys, Carver wants to see whether Schlozman or others targeted his clients for political purposes.
Carver represents Brentt G. Tumey, who along with other members of his family own an Arkansas contracting company, Managed Subcontractors Inc. The company was involved as a labor broker on a $50 million construction project at Fort Leonard Wood. At some point, federal investigators discovered violations of prevailing wage laws, and many companies, including MSI, paid fines to the government.
Only one of those companies has faced federal indictment. And Carver argues that the political implications are clear. Tumey’s mother, Robbyn, was a candidate for Arkansas state representative in 2004. Her opponent? Timmy Hutchinson, son of a U.S. senator and nephew of Asa Hutchinson, who at the time was running for Arkansas governor. Tumey later withdrew from that race. But in April 2006, she again announced her intention to seek the House seat as a Democrat. Two months later, Asa Hutchinson, in the midst of the gubernatorial race he would later lose, announced plans to be tough on illegal immigrants.
Six days later, MSI, and Carver’s client, Brentt Tumey, were indicted as a result of a federal immigration investigation into the long-ago completed construction project at Fort Leonard Wood. The indictment focuses on what Carver calls “technical violations” of prevailing wage laws.
“It is ironic to say the least that almost three years after an investigation of alleged wage and hour violations by virtually every contractor and subcontractor on the Fort Leonard Wood Construction project was concluded, an indictment was handed down in which, by implication, a candidate for public office was charged with a crime through her company, her son and her sister,” Carver argues in his motion seeking communication from Schlozman or Graves to their superiors, or to the U.S. attorneys prosecuting the case, that might indicate the case has political implications. “Even more alarming is the possibility that the Department of Justice has been manipulated by political opportunists.”
Let’s see. Democratic candidate suddenly being investigated by Bradley Schlozman just prior to an election and forced to drop out? Nope, nothing familiar here. Asa Hutchinson. Perfect candidate for AG.
Now Hutchinson may be pure as the driven snow in the situation, but the optics are horrible and and given the problem of the Justice Department being full of, you know, hacks right now who are going to be as hard to get rid of as a bad case of head lice it’s probably best to exhibit a bit more prudence than Pryor does in recommending someone who just might be implicated in the whole mess.
These people have staffs, fer chrissakes. Do they think before they open their mouths?

Christy talking on Seder
This whole AG thing is getting bizarre. But hey, bizarre has become somewhat ‘normal’.
Eureka Springs!!
Is there anyone in that party who is NOT touched by scandal? And who dems would confirm?
Apparently not.
Or (and just as likely), these people refuse to listen when their lowly staff members tell them things they don’t want to hear. To borrow from the Leona Helmsley School of Management, “listening is for the little people.”
TexBetsy @ 4
Comey?
We’re just going to have to get louder and LOUDER
Elliott @ 6
Oh Yeah!!!!!!!
Well if the lawyers of the lake are unavailable, nominate him!
Just know this: If Bush didn’t have to annoint a loyal Bush follower, then why would he not appoint Patrick Fitzgerald?
I think the connections between brains and mouths were cut long ago…
peanutbutter @ 10
In this house they happened around 12. Ears were disconnected from brain at 11. Hoping all returns to normal when they leave for college.
Gonzales set the bar in negative territory. The likes of John Mitchell would be an improvemnet.
TexBetsy @ 4
Dumb question.. why do we have to confirm anybody for the remainder of shrub’s term? I think I’ve changed my mind on this. Perhaps we should say that as long as the existing investigations are ongoing and the admin is refusing to cooperate, no more confirmations at all. Let shrub recess appoint them or use whatever mysterious rule-by-decree power he might yet invoke, and let him take the flack for it politically. I’m sorry.. I’m just not inclined to trust this batard.
As far we know, he’s planning on using the next 15 months to seriously screw over the country and the constitution and then end his term by issuing sweeping, Ford-type pardons to each and every one in his little junta. If he’s going to do this anyway, why should we help him at all?
Peterr @ 5
What has dominated these latest scandals regarding USAs are Senators meddling in federal affairs for state reasons. I’m wondering if there’s a different kind of cronyism involved, one at the state level that is more or less independent of party.
Why else would Pryor, a Democrat (albeit a DINO), be suggesting a Republican hack for AG except because of Arkansas local politics?
What does Pryor get for this?
ccmask @ 9
I thought Patrick was almost on the list of the fired attorneys?
My question was not dumb Blub. It’s just that you disagree with the premise.
yut yeeaaah
The Hutchinson boys lived together in DC. Asa, while prosecuting Clintons impeachment had his brother mixed up in an extramarital affair in their apartment at the same time, iirc.
Hutchinson was a player in the worst parts of AR’s role with Mena airport and Iran Contra.
Bush raised lots of money for Hutchinson during his failed bid for Governor of AR last year.
He really could be on Chimpy Mcflightsuits AG short list.
Asa is El Diablo with a bit of talibangelical fascism thrown in.
And some folks wonder why even the AR Republican party doesn’t have a challenger for Mark Pryors senate seat in ‘08.
Apropos another senator (Obama) and another observation that this ain’t rocket science: Stoller.
TexBetsy @ 16
TexBetsy, sorry for the misunderstanding. I wasn’t saying that YOUR question was dumb. I said I’d like to ask a dumb question:– why confirm anyone or anything shrub puts forward at all, instead of just rejecting them outright, and declaring the confirmation process closed for business. Sorry for any confusion.

well, look at the cronyism about that little bit slipped into the Patriot Act superseding Senate Confirmation for USAGs. We got nothing on the record that I know on that, no one was punished.
Glossed over with professional courtesy
CC: please post that list as a comment here.
ccmask, You made my day.
montag @ 14
Maybe because he thinks that a hack is the best we’re going to get from this president, so it might as well be a local hack.
When an interviewer asks a Democrat for a name of someone they could get behind as the new AG, they usually answer with someone that’s at least within the realm of possibility. “Well, so-and-so would be one person. S/he isn’t the choice I’d make if I were president, but it’s about the best we can hope for from this president.”
ccmask @ 21
may be worthwhile adding Duncan Hunter to the list.. under suspicion of engagement with Abramoff, among other things
cc mask. small request (or maybe not). Any way we could get the damn thing alphabeticized. It is so long now, my head gets sore just moving up and down to see if you have my favorites. :0
ccmask – Claude Allen.
Richmond @ 27
cc, I’ll do that for you if you want.
TexBetsy @ 23
Done
Why is Bush floating all these names that he knows would be nonstarters for Hilary? Is this a con where you give the mark something obvious to watch while you sneak in your real choice? Is Bush trying to make his real choice seem good by comparison to these losers? Are we suppose to be satisfied with some loyal Bushie hack later on because he is not Ted Olson or Asa?
ccmask @ 9 …then why would he not appoint Patrick Fitzgerald? and Blub @ 15
A week ago on PBS News Hour when Shields suggested Fitzgerald as a possible AG replacement, David Brooks compared him to Ramsey Clark.
It’s now becoming clearer to me why Senator Durbin was VERY quick to comment on his suggestions for Attorney General.
Ted Olson and Asa Hutchinson? Please. I can hardly wait to hear the Republicans tell all of us that either of these gentlemen would be an improvement. In the meantime, something tells me Senator Durbin may have more to say about this on Tuesday.

things come undone @ 31
I guess he still figures he owes Harriet a job…
montag, I agree about inside state party politics playing a role with Mark because I can find no opposition to anything Mark says or does at home within the AR D party.
AR, with 3 million residents and several of the most wealthy Americans and their Corporate home offices here.. is a very closed, inbred, old family run state.
We are damn near 49th in everything yet have more resources available to change it than one could possibly hope for.
Richmond @ 27
I’ll see what I can do :))
Elliott @ 22
That was sneaked in by someone in Republican staff. The only way this relates to Pryor is if you know that Pryor had knowledge of it and said nothing. I haven’t heard anything about that.
My question, though, was: what in Arkansas does Pryor get for endorsing a Republican hack for AG?
A few `pug votes? No more than he’s getting now. So, what does he gain? Like Jane says, what’s so difficult about just keeping one’s mouth shut?
What does Pryor gain by doing this? Hell, if this were just about promoting one’s state, I would think there were many more independent opportunities than Hutchison in Arkansas (leaving aside all the high school kool kidz aspects of that sort of promotion).
cc – thanks – and a couple more:
Ari Fleischer – treason
Ken Blackwell – election theft
Rush Limbaugh- illegal drug use
Ann Coulter -voter fraud
It’s not just the impropriety, but almost equally important is the APPEARAMCE of impropriety where the law is concerned.
(Do you hear me Supreme Court? DOJ?)
So many good rules have gone down the drain.
Rush Limbaugh- illegal drug use and importation
Richmond @ 38
Those are great!! Can someone alphabetize it for me quickly or do I have to do it the old fashioned way?
Jane,
Here is what I don’t get. Do they forget that we’re here?
Are there fewer of us than I think there are?
Have we not figured out how to grab the microphone?
Do we not understand that they’ve blackmailed everyone?
Was 2006 a dream and they’re really still controlling everything?
If we found out the answers would they have to kill us?
Olio:
Wow cc.
Fitzgerald has integrity. Why would Bush want an AG with integrity? He wants someone who will keep the wall up, not bring it down.
If your party’s gonna lose, why not lose to someone that’s your party-lite? Why not throw her a little paper tiger party?
Meanwhile, Iran may burn and global warming IS burning. Felix to be Category 5 in 36 hours. Poor Mexico.
Elliott — you on the alphabetizing or should I?
And then it is nap time.
ccmask @ 41
I’ll do it
Blub @ 34
Wouldn’t that be great? The Senate Judiciary Committee could hold hearings as to her nomination, and the Sergeant-at-Arms could take her “home” at night as a result of her contempt citation from the House.
Elliott @ 45
Oh good. Can someone post the whole list to facebook or someplace else while I’m napping. Thank you! What good friends you are.
Thanks Elliott. Then post it so I can add Richmonds 4 & Duncan for Blub.
Asa Hutchinson is on the short-list of candidates for Next Republican To Get Busted in a Tearoom.
David Ehrenstein @ 49
Wide Stancer??
Blub @ 26
He’s definitely on the outskirts of the Cunningham imbroglio and may yet be dragged down…

“Wide Stance: A History of the Protracted Death of the American Right”
Oh Gosh. We are getting another lightning storm. It’s about 20 minutes away right now. My neighbor must be wanting to slit her wrists right now…She has 30 people for three days at her house. Three bedrooms, one bath. They had small tents set up for the 11 kids but it rained all night. And now it is starting again. I would run away from home, if it was me. I’m getting too old for parties and rain.
juslin @ 53
yeah. And how about Kerik the man? If Ghoul gets the nod, we need to be totally focused on that mobster.
juslin @ 53
What’s the name?
Blub @ 54
LOL
Blub @ 56
Which mobster? Kerik or Giuliani?
more in the department of not thinking before opening trap…
Blub @ 56
Oh yeah. Good one. I swear, everytime I post it it grows.
Answer that question about the entire gang of fourteen and I suspect you will understand Pryors motives.
Pryor is an anti choice Democrat (at least he admits it). Oh and of course he voted for the Patriot Act. For Torture, against Habeas Corpus.. For Gonzo and Alice Fischer etc.
Really only one small publication in AR covers these things at all, The Arkansas Times. No MSM press mentions any of these things in state. The largest newspaper is owned by billionaire Walter Hussman, nothing less than a Scaife.
The average AR citizen has no idea, none.
ccmask @ 57
Thomas Ravenel.
Who was replaced by his father, who was an avowed racist.

ccmask @ 21
South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, cokehead and probable Klansman
Thanks Elliott. I just found this at wiki:
Kerik- Tax evasion.
Bernard Bailey “Bernie” Kerik, CBE, (born September 4, 1955 in Newark, New Jersey) was an American law-enforcement officer. Kerik was Police Commissioner of the City of New York from 2000 to 2001. In December 2004, George W. Bush nominated Kerik as Secretary of Homeland Security. A week later, Kerik withdrew his acceptance, explaining that he had employed an illegal immigrant as a nanny; subsequently, numerous allegations surfaced which might have led to a difficult confirmation battle. In 2006, Kerik pled guilty to two unrelated ethics violations after an investigation by the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, and was ordered to pay $221,000. He is currently under federal scrutiny for tax evasion.
cc, do you have the guy on Romney’s campaign who pretended to be an officer of the law?
Hi Elliott- good minds think alike (alas we should have communicated, my fault).
Richmond @ 69
it’s a double check!
also.. who was governor of OH during the ‘04 election, over partisanship and vote-rigging allegations? And, of course, we could also add to the list the Diebold guy who said that his product’s mission was to “reelect” Bush. and other rethugs
ccmask, great list! Isn’t Delay under indictment, though?
cc and Richmond — how about the millions of missing WH emails?
Blub @ 71
Kenneth Blackwell. But, I don’t think he’s been indicted for anything… yet.
Oh My God — we don’t even have Rove
Carl Rove-breaking and entering for purposes of election fraud
Oh.. and Bob “bury’em alive” Murray
Great Post..
There’s not a lot in the Corporate Media about the machinations behind replacing corrupt Abu Gonzales.
but here is the scariest part of the post..
given the problem of the Justice Department being full of, you know, hacks right now who are going to be as hard to get rid of as a bad case of head lice
When The PNAC stole the White House and our government, the first thing they did was UNDO everything Clinton managed to accomplish.. I just wish that we could elect a President in 2008 that would actually take the oath of office and promptly FIRE everyone that fucking idiot Bush hired.. and then impeach John Roberts and Sam Alito from SCOTUS..
We need an enema BAD and we should stick the nozzle in the front door of the White House..
Richmond @ 75
Also fraud (not using WH communication system for WH business)
during the libby trial some-one compiled a list of scandals.
over 100 of them!
would it be worth your while to co-relate names to scandals?
Bill O’liey- sexual abuse
oh.. the Diebold guy was Walden O’Dell, forced to resign in ‘05. I believe there’s still a California investigation going on.
Richmond @ 78
And violations of the Hatch act.
montaq@63
thanx for his name – i couldnt recall at that moment…brain’s on slo-mo right now lol
Does Monica Goodling merit a presence on the list, given her under-oath confession, or is she too chump change?
Blub @ 81
And, my, how interesting it is that–after Wally O’Dell’s departure–Diebold was unable to sell the voting machine division and it was subsequently spun off….
How about Mitt Romney – lack of oversight of Boston’s Big Dig led to the death of Milena Delvalle due to the tons of concrete that fell onto her car as she tried to get to Logan airport.
ccmask @ 55
Could you call her and ask her to come over for an emergency? Then, when she gets there give her a cuppa and tell her you thought she might need an emergency break. ;)
Whon was the Macaca guy?
G.W. Bush, driving under the influence. Military AWOL.
ccmask @ 88
Former VA Senator George Allen, Jr.
Thanks. Keep adding and I’ll update as we go.
Boston1775 @ 86
and there will be more, don’t you think?
On second thought, perhaps we should just begin with cc’s list and append to it the entire RNC membership list and donor database. At this rate, we’ll be adding names all night, all week and probably all year :P… How does a political party become a crime syndicate anyway?
Here’s the list in alphabetical order of last name:

it WOULD be easier to pick out the names of the innocent.
Blub @ 93
Just turn the RICO laws inside out, and there’s your game plan. :)
WOW! i didnt realize the list is sooo long and we still have other names lol.. this from a party that bills itself as having “family values”….so i guess in their case family values = mass corruption!
Elliott @ 92
You can’t believe the amount of water that leaks through it every day.
Is there a way to get Asa Hutchinson on the crime list?

Okay. Got that.

If you every want some creative reading at the library of congress, check out Bechtel’s final federal proposal and EIS for the project. It’s one of the shoddiest unprofessional pieces… lacking any real reference to the aquifer infusion, dry rot and other structural problems now plagueing the project. I want to stress the sole contractor name: Bechtel. As in shrubco.
Elliott @ 103
It will do my heart good to Mitt Romney on that list. We live with his negligent “governing” and his ridicule every day. He is the worst.
None of this will make a bit of difference if war speads in the Middle East. I for one think our president has set us on the path to greater war, and perhaps nothing’s going to stop it. This needless journey, that this and the rest of the lunatics and maniacs in charge have set us on, may continue no matter who wins in 2008. This is, and may will be the Bush and our legacy. Hope, and very little of that, is all we have left.
Elliott @ 99
Slime and grime on the public dime is not enough to serve time unless you prosecute and convict those involved in Iran Contras crimes. *s*
My party needs to take matters directly to the people. That’s how the Vietnam War was ended.
What about Richard Pombo?
Blub @ 105
Actually, there were many subcontractors on the Big Dig. Perini Bros. are the homegrown variety of suspicious contractors, and they had a piece of it, and a good portion of the job was subcontracted by Parsons, through Parsons-Brinkerhoff.
None of these firms have good reputations. There’s a lot of blame to go around. The Mittster wasn’t solely responsible for lack of oversight. The work on the Big Dig began in 1989.
Eureka Springs @ 108

Jane, FYI, are you up on this?

Ya got to love it when wikipedia has inscribed “After multiple allegations of corruption, misuse of official resources, nepotism, questionable campaign contributions…” next to your name for all immortality
Oklahoma kiddo @ 109
The people need to take this directly to the party. All parties. It’s time to say: Enough.
So. Is anyone ambitious enough to add office held and in which state to this list?

montag @ 111
Yeah.. a joke all around. I was talking, though about the final federal EIS though, for which Bechtel was sole contractor and prime, and which was intended to provide the oversight mechanism… it didn’t. Just a cheerleading document that glossed over all of the risks… not even any real structural analysis.. just, yeah, “it’ll be done on budget and on-time, not too many people will evicted from their homes, no real political risks, nothing to see here”
Oh, on Rove: outing a CIA agent.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 107
just the very fact that you are doing this makes a difference.
don’t belittle your own efforts.
neccessary small actions(and this action is not small)are the ground upon which large results(or even small seemingly insignificant results)
beget consequences for the better, that would not be able to happen otherwise.
don’t let the b*rstards grind you down.

that comes of as such a cut!
Boston: What is the reason? Was that accident his fault? If so, I’ll put it up.
Aloha Ya’ll! I’ve another Rethug to add to the list: Doug Lamborn
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/052148.php
Wait a minute, Lurita Doan (sp)
You might want to add to the list former CT governor John Rowland (R), convicted and sent to jail for bribe-taking and kickbacks.
But I agree it would be simplest just to list all repubs, and then subtract out the few innocent ones.

that comes off as such a cut!
What can I write for Cheney? Use US troops to start a war? And Bush? I need help with those 2.

I have to wonder at what point do all of these scandals.. especially those involving Abramoff and his RNC buddies.. stop being coincidence and pervasive corruption and become racketeering. A boy can hope…

The Democratic candidates for president have an effective veto power over the Attorney General nominee, if they choose to exercise it. Imagine this: Biden, Clinton, Dodd, Edwards, and Obama all decide to oppose a particular nominee. Unless Leahy and Reid want the Democrat’s presidential chances in November to evaporate, that nominee will never get out of committee. The press would have a field talking up the dysfunctional Democratic party, worse than the Iraq situation.
ccmask @ 131
Cheney: Plame.
Cheney: 1992 “it would be a quagmire.” 2003: “they’ll greet us with flowers.” I’d say, simply, war crimes.
What a YouTube clip this would make, running through their pictures/names/accusations/convictions rapidly. And the background music???
YOW! I just got a reply to the email I sent to Lanny Davis telling him I thought that recommending Olson wasn’t a good thing! Here his reply:
You apprently don’t think it’s necessary to explain your opinion – it’s curious why you chose to email me.
If you have a better conservative Republican that a conservative Republcian whom you prefer President Bush to appoint – since he is still, after all, the President – you are entitled to your opinion.
But I don’t–and I know Olson as a man of independence who won’t let a 30-something in the White House infringe on the DOJ independence. Of course I disagree with him on most things – after all, I am a liberal Democrat. But last time I looked, we lost the 2004 election.

I have zero use for Lanny Davis.
But I’m wondering whether he has a point.
Shrub is not going to pick an AG candidate FDLers will like.
Maybe Plan B is to ask, of all the abominable possibilities, who is least abominable?
There is, after all, a scale of scumbagness.
Interesting email from Lanny Davis, quoted by itwasntme @ 137. I think the prevailing view among Senators is that the President gets to have his man or woman, unless there are pictures of said nominee performing unnatural acts with small animals.
I say this is bullshit. The Constitution gives the Senate the power to reject anominee. The Senate’s power is equal to the President. Pace, Lanny: Last time I checked Democrats controlled the Senate.
A million dead in Iraq. Almost 4,000 American soldiers killed. How many more gallons of blood Mr. President do you thirst for?

Pretty decent, the annual Harley owners are stoked and amassed for the annual Labor Day run from Hilo to Kailua-Kona for Jerry’s Kids!!!
Elliott @ 154
oh yeah, the nominee can’t be a member of The Federalist Society, either!!
I guess the strategy in all these bonehead recommendations for AG is that if enough really dreadful nominations are publicized, it will make the merely awful nominations appear moderate by contrast. Y’know, like “Orrin Hatch? Well, at least he’s not as bad as Asa Hutchinson.”
Bob in HI
Elliott @ 140
Dreaming? Not sure if you mean that the Democratic candidates would unite against a given nominee, or if you mean that Leahy and Reid would decide not to respect that opinion. The Democratic candidates would have to announce for or against a given nominee in any case. Certainly there could be a split there, which would be a source of contention in any debates. However, the candidates have all united to support the DNC’s early primary schedule. At least on that decision, there will not be talk about divided Democrats from the press.

Well, the truly unfortunate bit about this was the willingness of the Senate, in general, to confirm Abu in the first place, someone who was known to be overly-devoted not to justice, but, rather, to Bush.
The Senate is still willing to give Bush the benefit of the doubt, which they should not do, because, as I said, Bush is dangerous.
I think back to when Nixon shoved the execrable Clement Haynesworth under the Senate’s nose, and when they went “whew, this guy stinks,” Nixon got all huffy, and gave them G. Harrold Carswell, who was an even bigger stinker. It was only then that Nixon relented and gave the Senate Harry Blackmun.
If the first candidate is who Bush really wants (other than Abu), then that’s the bozo to summarily dismiss. Anyone who’s a Federalist Society member gets a pass. Go right down the list until someone approximating normal appears.
That’s the way it ought to go… no matter what Class A-1 Dubyafuck Lanny Davis thinks.
The Iraqi and Palestinian people are on their own trail of tears every day. And every night.
I’d write Lanny if I could be nice about it.

Which is why Fitzgerald’s grand jury investigation of the outing of CIA Officer Plame – evidence available to Congress under a FRofCrP Rule 6(e) exception if and only if the House is conducting an impeachment inquiry, aka a “judicial proceeding” – may well yield or lead to clear evidence of multiple impeachable high crimes and misdemeanors in spite of the fact that criminal prosecutions of multiple individuals were not possible under the criminal code. Major league evidence, available to a House impeachment committee on a silver platter, for the asking of a judge. There “is too” time…

But that the real enemy is turncoat, weak and worthless Dems.

W’all, gee, except for Landrieu, the Nelson brothers, Salazar and Pryor… and three of the four non-voting members….
Which makes almost 20% of the Dems in the Senate at the time. That doesn’t bode well for future votes.
newspaperbrat @ 197
(((NPB))) Excellent idea you’ve floated!!! *g*
In case you’re wondering why so many Dems have turned into lily livered wusses, this might explain it:
# Total number of NSL requests from 2000 (prior to passage of the Patriot Act): about 8,500.
# Total number of NSL requests from 2003-2005 (after passage of the Patriot Act): 143,074.
NSL stands for National Security Letters. The things they use to collect information on you and your habits. Your library use, internet use, phone and banking records, etc…
143,074 NSL’s seeking any or all records on thousands of Americans. Even more interesting, here’s the year by year breakdown:
* 2003: 39,346
* 2004: 56,507
* 2005: 47,221
Gee, what could have caused a spike in NSL’s in 2004? Oh, wait. That was an election year. If all this
spyingdata collection isn’t being done on the Dems, theRNCWhite House is wasting it’s time.Elliott,
You should have seen the grunts in Viet Nam.
The most wonderful gooup of people I’ve seen.
They hung together. Hated their situation. But would follow orders.
But at a certain point. somewhere in the late 1960s, they began to change.
When the chief, unwritten, mission became to survive 1 year in the Nam.
The message they sent was brutal. Fraggings. Asassinations.
The Army was collapsing. Nixon knew it.
He had to pull out.
Today — the volunteer army will grind itself into dust. Their all carrerists.
Unlike Nixon, I don’t think Bush will not back down on right wing nominees. Larry Thompson might be the best possible option.
New post upstairs
Elliott @ 199
That’s what conscription is always for…. Given all that’s happened in the last more than six years, do you honestly think Bush or Cheney would have been influenced by big crowds in the streets of DC? He would have done what he’s consistently done at such times… he would have been out of town.
These guys only care about the polls when the polls agree with what they want. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an administration so impervious and indifferent to public opinion. Except, maybe, Hoover’s.
james @ 174
Susan Ralston resigned also at some point and I believe she is also under investigation. Someone asked about Ravenel; there was an article in TheState.com (SC) paper last week talking about the sweet deal he is getting. Some of Abramoff/Delay associates may be missing from the list also. RepublicanGate or GeorgeWBushGate or ClusterFuckGate etc., may exceed WaterGate before it is over.
YOW! continued… Here’s my reply to Davis’ personal email:
Thanks for your reply. I objected to Ted Olson principally because I doubt his capacity to be impartial and “above politics”. I understand that Mr. Olson was key to something referred to as the “Arkansas Project.” This was financed by one Mr. Scaife, and was highly active in targeting President and Mrs. Clinton, and about which you yourself said, I believe, that Scaife was “using it (his money) to destroy a president of the US.”
I realize you wish to give the President the person of his choice as AG, as has been done customarily in the past. It is the gentlemanly things to do, but since the Democrats won the legislature in 2006, I personally think it is time to fight like hell for someone who has demonstrated he/she can be genuinely above partisan politics, like maybe James B. Comey or David Iglesias.
Thanks for your attention.
