Well, what the hell is ‘Labor’ doing about Honorary ‘Bush Dog’ Baird then?
If you want to know why the Carolinas are at the bottom of the list, go read up on the Textile Union strikes of the 1930s. People died. People lost their jobs. The bosses won. Workers in the Carolinas stopped believing in unions because the rest of the labor movement left them out to dry.
Rebuilding is slow and difficult. The current struggles are in meatpacking (Smithfield Hams) where the bosses are using illegal immigrants and the threat of deportation to try to break the movement toward a union.
I support unions, but their lack of support for one another starting in the 70’s with the Teamsters supporting Nixon, and in the 80’s with union members, not the leadership, supporting Reagan, unions cut their own throat. It’s too bad that their power is now history, but it was the members who wrote their obituary. The same union members who want support from the American people voted against their own best interests for years. Now the jobs are gone.

The unions are withering except for the education and service industry sectors. It’s the economy, stupid! And the current leadership of the AFL-CIO has completely sold its soul to the Democrats. I was a National Staff member of the Mondale Campaign when this started, and it seemed a good idea at the time. But the members disagreed—the leadership was off-kilter, not the members.
The Unions wrote their own death Knell when they allowed Raygun to fire the air traffic controllers without so much as a whimper, there should have been a general strike in this country, but, the union leadership couldn’t muster the troops. NOW the same thing is going to happen to the teamsters, the mexican truckers will be having their lunch this year as well as putting all our lives in jeopardy. So much for the old Mother Truckers of the U.S.A..
