(Please welcome candidate Barry Welsh, live from the Paradise Market in Indianapolis where he is blogging with Hoosier native Joh Padgett -- JH)
Of all the solid, progressive candidates Blue America didn't get around to endorsing last year, one of the ones that irked me the most was Indiana's Barry Welsh, who I covered quite a bit at DWT but never got a chance to have on FDL. When he announced he was running again, I knew exactly who to turn to-- our own Joh Padgett who, no surprise, was one of the first people to volunteer for Barry's campaign. I'm on a plane today but Joh is going to help Jane host our first meeting with a progressive easily worth all three of the Blue Dogs Indiana elected last year.
Here's Joh's report:
I was struggling with how to begin writing this introduction and I got to thinking about something I keep telling everybody that asks "how's the campaign coming along?" ever since Barry Welsh announced at YKos that he was running against rubber stamp extremist Mike Pence (R-Iraqi Markets) for the second time in Indiana 6th congressional district. It's an honest question and my reply always starts out with "it's gonna be different this time." The reason I say this is because it already is different this time, one month into the announcement, as of Labor Day, and already we have experienced the shift that occurs when a candidate truly turns a corner.
Last time around, in 2006, Barry ran a Netroots savvy, groundbreaking campaign whose official website resides in the US Library of Congress as part of the Election 2006 MINERVA collection created to document the online history of the 2006 elections. Barry pushed for Howard Dean's 50 State Strategy by putting up a special section of his campaign site to help recruit and identify potential candidates to run in every state of the Union. Without Barry Welsh the 2006 elections could very well have gone very differently. This is one clear difference about Barry-- it's not always about him and he fights for the team, not for his own personal glory.
When election night rolled around, November 7th 2006, Barry lost his race against Pence, but something unexpected that nobody, not even Barry, thought would happen. As returns rolled in, it became apparent that Barry's little campaign-that-could, had beaten the odds to crack 40% of the vote. Now I know some of you read that figure and think to yourself "only 40%? Why is this guy so impressed by 40% of the vote?" And normally, you would be correct in your assessment, but this is not a normal district Barry is running in.
This is a district that is so red the previous Democrat that ran in 2004 got 31% of the vote. Barry and his band of volunteers and average people who never campaigned before in their lives struck a chord wherever they went and forced a 9 point swing in votes with less than $50,000 in total donations, more than half of which from in-kind donations and very little from cash on hand. That is something we call in Indiana "brassroots campaigning" because that means someone brought out the brass knuckles when they went campaigning-- and that someone was a Methodist minister from Laurel, IN named Barry Welsh.
The man is an animal on the campaign trail; I mean it! He doesn't know when to quit and if you tell him to take it easy, it makes him drink an extra can of Mountain Dew and get started earlier than he was planning to. But again, this time it is different and the story about that is one that must be shared as it explains what drives the man.
For the past ten years Barry has been pastor for Laurel United Methodist Church in the tiny town of Laurel, IN. Located in an economically depressed area of the state, life can be hard in Laurel and so a lot of people who live in the town of 584 (2006 Census estimate) turn to their faith to get them by in these difficult times. Barry led a flock of about 40-50 of his neighbors every Sunday in worship at Laurel UMC, one of eight churches in Laurel. That little town has a lot of faith, and Barry's congregation love and support him and his wife Sherri.
Every couple of years the pastors assigned to the different UMC congregations come up for reappointment to their churches. Earlier this summer, when Barry met with the church officials who decide such things, what he thought would be a routine reappointment ended up not being the case. The church leaders decided that Barry was not the kind of minister they want leading the church in Laurel despite his popularity with the congregation and 10 year tenure in the same post. The official reason for his dismissal? He turns in his paperwork at the last minute. Not late, mind you; he turns in his paperwork exactly on time. This was obviously a political decision made by the church officials, and as a result Barry has taken a 2 year sabbatical from his ministry in order to pursue the nomination to run against Pence full time.
The GOP tentacles in our society today reach far and wide and can even destroy families on a personal level like they tried to do to Barry. Fortunately for the Welsh family Barry's wife Sherri works outside the home and they can, with belt tightening and creative budgeting, work it out so that Barry can concentrate on campaigning full time this cycle. This means Barry is dedicating himself to 24/7 Pence Watch and fundraising for the campaign. Yet another clear difference this time around.
Barry does not run from a fight, if anything he welcomes it. He is a man of peace but he is also a man who is not afraid to use righteous anger. FDL folks know all about righteous anger, and when you see the video below of Barry speaking to the UAW members at a rally from last year you will see him display his righteous anger in a manner not seen in a long time. The hairs on my neck literally stand up every time I watch this clip and I know it will affect you in a similar way. This video clip shows a very clear difference between Barry and the kind of Blue Dog Democrats that tend to come from the state whose name means the Land of Indians. Barry is one of the More and Better Democrats Howie and Darcy talk about.
Another thing you need to know about Barry is that he is also a former teacher and coach. His brilliance and his respect for education, especially science and history, is exemplary. He truly understands the science behind ecologically friendly initiatives and wants Indiana and our nation to embrace technologies that could make us energy independent and far less reliant on foreign oil. He embraces innovation and would like to see a "moon shot" program to invent the technologies we need to have a sustainable energy future for our children and grandchildren. He sees the closed down auto factories in the 6th District and envisions high tech manufacturing plants churning out solar panels and other products that will go a long way toward securing our energy needs for the future. Yet another clear difference between Barry and Pence, the reactionary regressivist.
On a personal level Barry is one of the kindest and most caring human beings I have ever met. He is like that friendly neighbor you love to invite to the backyard barbecue because he's so outgoing and charming, but genuine and the kind of person you walk away from saying "I like that guy." You look forward to seeing Barry at the high school football game, grocery store or while walking the dog.
My only regret is that I could not get involved in his campaign last cycle due to the circumstances I found myself in last summer presiding over the eventual passing of my mother Phyllis last September. Mom would have loved Barry and would have been shoulder to shoulder with me in support of him. I hope you all will join me in support by heading over to our Blue America page to donate to his campaign, or go to his website to sign up for updates or to volunteer.
I want to thank Howie for having Barry over to talk to the community here at FDL about his campaign. Barry and I really appreciate the opportunity, and we are both honored to have Jane moderating the discussion with Barry in the comments section while Howie is traveling back east to do battle with the forces of conservative evil on his latest trip. Barry and I are set up in the cafe at Paradise Bakery in the Castleton area of Indianapolis where we have turned this into a public event to introduce Barry and FDL to the public. If you would like to see what is going on at our end while the discussion takes place,
you can watch our UStream.tv live video stream (above), or watch it here.(Sorry we had some technical difficulties -- JH)We'll see you in comments, and for all of my friends here at FDL thanks for coming. Oh, and uh, FITZ! ROOTZ! JANE!

Welcome, Barry and welcome Joh. It’s wonderful to have you here today.
Welcome Barry Welsh! We are glad to hear your ideas for ‘08 and your experience in ‘06.
Welcome Barry from a fellow (relocated) Hoosier!
Twisted Martini @ 3
Did you relocate from IN since I visited?
Hello everybody, I am getting Barry set up and he will be with us momentarily
Welcome from a Bluegrass native! Where is your district? Largest metro area? I do have friends in Indiana that I can beat up on for you if necessary.
Wish Poputonian and *ilson were here (other Hoosiers).
No, I consider myself a relocated Yankee (from CT). But I’ve lived here for 13 years.
Twisted Martini @ 8
Ah I did know about the CT part.
Where did *ilson go? We sure miss him around here.
While we are waiting, Howie where is the next scandal coming from?
AZ Matt @ 11
Howie’s on a plane for NY right now so you’re stuck with me. And Kobe. Who feels much better after last night’s trip to the ER, for anyone who was worried.
If Michigan loses to Appalachian State, it will be a huge scandal!
Jane Hamsher @ 12
Kobe eating OK now?
Glad to hear he is ok. What was the problem?
Can’t stay around for Barry, but I did make my contribution through the Act Blue page for $250.00.
I have so much for respect for true patriots like Barry, who pledge their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
How can we do less?
While we’re waiting I’d just like to give a big round of applause for Joh Padgett who hosts blogtalk radio’s Meet the Bloggers and also helps out our own Donita Sparks with the technical aspects of her post here every Friday. He’s absolutely tireless in his support of progressive issues and politics and it’s great that we can have him here today.
Hello everyone. I am Barry Welsh, and I want to thank Howie, Jane, Joh, and all of you for having me here today, and I look forward to hearing your questions, concerns, and comments.
AZ Matt @ 14
Kobe’s eating fine now and he’s resting leisurely on the sofa. He had some barfing issues yesterday and last night.
Thank you so much for that contribtion Aeolys, you are a wonderful human being! You can access Barry’s ActBlue page at http://www.actblue.com/page/blueamerica08
Aeolus @ 16
Okay Aeolus, you’ve inspired me. I’m giving $100 in honor of Joh.
Jane Hamsher @ 17
Awww shucks…thanks Jane, I couldnt do it withot yor support and the great folks here at FDL who are so awesome in their encoragement and their own dedication as well.
finifinito @ 20
Joh I’m changing your link. If folks could give through the Blue America page so we can track how much we raise today that would be great.
Barry Welsh @ 18
Welcome Barry !!!
Welcome, Barry, and thanks for being here.
This is, potentially, the most important thing of all for our future as an advanced society. IIRC, the world runs on 29 terawatts of energy, and this demand is going to double in the next 50 years…and it’s going to come from somewhere. It’s great to see a candidate speaking up on this issue.
As an Indiana resident, I know the Republican kool-aid runs freely here. Barry, what can you do to engage your district in a conversation that opens the door a crack for a progressive Democrat?
Jane Hamsher @ 21
Man, that is so great of you Jane! Thank you so much!
Twisted Martini @ 26
That’s a very good question. What progressive issues do you find most engage people in a rather conservative state?
Welcome Barry!
Thank you for running, not an easy decision at times. Affordable health care is out of reach for too many, what is the situation in your district? What improvements would you like to see?
Afternoon, folks.
I’m not gonna be shy.
I’m in for $100 and a 10% tip to Act Blue. Best of luck to you, Barry Welsh!
(I do have an OT topic I hope Howie will address at some point…CA 41)
From one pastor to another, welcome to the Lake, Barry!
How does having a progressive Democratic member of the clergy affect the dynamics of your race? Does it cut down on the gratuitous “dems hate God” rhetoric?
Hi Barry,
Over at Crooks and Liars, there is a story on the President’s nominee for Surgeon General:
Dr. James Holsinger has also been a longtime leader of the Confessing Movement in the United Methodist Church. The Confessing Movement is a rightwing “renewal group” affiliated with the Washington, DC-based Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD), whose purpose for a generation has been to divide and disrupt the historic churchs of mainline protestantism in the interests of advancing neoconservatism and the religious right.
Holsinger was elected to the highest court in the Methodist Church a time when the IRD-affiliated church “renewal” groups had launched efforts to use church judicial systems to enforce their notions of orthodoxy, particularly on matters related to homosexuality.
———————–
Will you comment on the political tactics of the religious right, the billions they have received in the name of faith-based initiatives and the effect on longstanding churches?
This person, the nominee for Surgeon General, is a Methodist who espouses right wing beliefs and stole millions from the Methodist church.
I threw in $25. Jerry Lewis is running again for those who hadn’t heard.
Welcome Joh and Welcome Barry!
The only piece of Indiana I’ve seen is the Heartwoods forest protection community….at least one deep blue spot in the state’s southern region.
Thanks to both of you for bringing progressive representation to your neck of the woods!
The district Barry is challenging has been devastated by the decline of automotive manufacturing. They were able to lure Honda to build a brand new plant in Greensburg, but Muncie and Anderson are as depressed as you have ever seen a town.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 30
My pc coughed up a hairball. I’m not sure if my donation completed or not? (All my windows froze and I had to reboot.)
Hello Barry, I don’t have a question. I just came by to say hello.
Contribution from a gal who grew up just over the border, in Ohio:
I’m in.
You can win this time. I am hearing from life-long middle class Republicans who have Had Enough.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 36
See if you get a confirmation email from ActBlue.
It is not only the middle class Republicans that have had enough. Look at the defections from the White House and the party, both voluntary and involuntary.
Jane Hamsher @ 28
That is a great question. Sorry it took a moment to get you a reply. I was getting my picture taken with an adorable little baby that is going to be denied health insurance.
I take a common sense approach to issues out here on the ground and don’t run from any issue. One of the problems we as progressives have in Red State areas is that we must educate as well as influence. We have to talk about discrimination when we talk about GLBTQ issues. We have to talk about reducing unwanted pregnancies instead of for or against the right to choose.
We have to remind them how poverty impacts all communities and we have to remind them how education or the lack of it, impacts on many levels.
We have to remind them that being a progressive means progress and if there is ever a district that needs to move forward it is out here and people are waking up to it.
We will never reach them all or convince them all, but we will reach over 51% and we will move this distirct, this state, and this nation forward
Barry, I’m a physician/enviro, and I used to consult on cancer units.
Never heard anyone - red or blue - say they like cancer.
In conservative areas of your district, have voters seen the link between Big Chemical Ag and rising cancer rates? Is this an issue for them?
On more general grounds, are the Bushies’ failures on health care an issue for the election?
Rev. Walsh you seem like a great guy if you get elected would be willing to help spread the word that progressive Christianity does exist?
AZ Matt @ 29
It is dire. I just had a couple from the district show up out here at the event, and they came to ask the same question. What can we do to get healthcare for our three month old child. The need is great in this district and universal healthcare can not come soon enough.
Thanks for that great question

Bush Surgeon General Nominee (and Methodist Renewal Leader) Charged with Conflicts of Interest
By Frederick Clarkson Fri Aug 31, 2007 at 03:39:28 PM EST
topic: Battle For Mainstream Faith section:Front Page printable version print this story
George Bush’s nominee for Surgeon General has drawn a lot of heat for among other things, his crack-pot anti-gay views as a leader in the United Methodist affiliate of the Institute on Religion and Democracy. But a new report may finally sink his already controversial nomination in a sea of conflicts of interest that have marked his career.
Hello to all!
Just wanted to say hi to everyone and say I’m proud of you honey!
Love,
Sherri
egregious @ 39
I’m resending. If it ends up being $200, so much the better (I’ve got a job that annoys the living daylights out of me, but it does let me feel good about helping Howie’s Act Blue candidates.)
Norcal @ 43
Thanks for asking, and it’s Barry not Rev. and I think by running, I am doing that. There are many progressive Christians and I find it hard to actually practice Christianity without being progressive. It is Peace, Love, Understanding and helping those that need it. that is Christianity and that is progressive, to me, they go hand in hand.
But to others, their faith is to be used not practiced, so there is an obvious and very real difference.
To answer your question, yes, I will be one of those voices.
Barry,
Thanks for you answer. What are some of the economic diversification options for your district since the auto industry seems to be on a constant downhill slide? How is the the community college system in your area and how is it helping in re-training workers?
Sorry for the delay folks, tech trouble here at the site, Jane is replacing our dead UStream feed with a great video of Barry at a UAW rally last year
Hey Barry-
Rock on.
kirk murphy @ 42
Thanks for asking! I don’t think they have seen the potential link in cancer and the confined Animal feeding operations or factory farms, but I fear the lack of regulations and the incredible growth in numbers of these farms and theri envioronmental impact.
BooMan @ 51
Hey Booman! Thanks for all that you do
Congressional Candidates Wife @ 46
Hi Sherri! Welcome. Nice to meet you and Barry! :)
Oh, and hello Sherri. You rock on, too.
AZ Matt @ 49
BooMan @ 51
BooMan, an honor!
Congressional Candidates Wife @ 46
Hi Honey!
It is busy out here in person and in here on Firedog.
Be home later.
Sherri is in the house! Woot! Congressional Candidates Wife is Sherri Welsh, Barry’s wife!
Thank you Audrey, nice to meet you too!
Love,
Sherri
It seems like ethanol is becoming a diversification option, as there is lots of corn here. My question is how viable is ethanol as an energy alternative?
Thank you Booman ;o)
Love,
Sherri
Welcome Sherri.
Twisted Martini @ 61
We are beginning to see signs of trouble with that here in Indiana. Critics are pointing out the environmental impact is much greater than folks realize.
Thank you FiniFiniTOOBZ
Love,
Sherri
AZ Matt @ 33
Gotta go - see you and have fun everyone!
I’m in for $100. This is fun.
CocoaBeach @ 68
Woot! Very much appreciated!
Barry at 48, I’m so glad to hear your answer, because it expresses so well how I feel. I was from Lake County, IN, for the first 45 years of my life, and if there is one thing I have come to know, it’s bigotry. I was just reading something about Tom Tancredo, and couldn’t help but wonder if anyone could be a more blatant bigot. Of course, most people that are prejudiced try to mask that characteristic, while at the same time pointing their fingers at others and calling them tramps and thieves, unworthy of a helping hand. That’s not what the Bible says, last I heard. I was wondering how you point out in your travels how closely related Progressive goals and Christian ideals are? I know I can’t help but wonder how Tancredo and his ilk can call themselves Christian and yet they are such blatant bigots.
Barry — I know Howie has asked you about it because we’ve decided not to endorse anyone who would vote for the new extra $50 billion supplemental for the war, but since it’s a big deal to our readers these days I thought maybe you could address your position on this.
Dont forget to check out all of our social networking profiles via our website at http://barrywelsh.org! On the front page in the bottom right corner of the front page is a set of links to or profiles all throughot the toobz! Friend us on MySpace and Facebook!
FiniFiniTOOBZ! @ 64
Corn is a fertilizer intensive crop, and thus a net minus in overall energy production. Ethanol may be supported in certain scenarios (perhaps in Brazil), but here in the USA, it is just another scam for ADM and corporate agriculture.
Twisted Martini @ 61
Twisted Martini
It seems that each county is trying to set up an entanol plant. My problem is infrastructure. How are we supposed to get it from the plants to the filing stations? That is my concern.
Corn ethanol is not as useful as sugar based from what I have read. Another concern is that corn being used for ethanol can not be used for feed and will drive up food costs.
Barry:
I am wondering, what have people in your district been saying about the war? Do most want us out with in a year or so? Do you get many people calling you names(basically the Freedom Watch type crowd)? I am curious as to what people from other parts of the country are saying.
Barry
Thanks for stopping by. I would like to reinforce Jane’s question on how you would vote on not only the additional $50 billion, but also the $147 billion that is already pending.
Jane,
I’m very sorry to hear about Kobe - Knick has been missing since Thursday.
Hi Barry,
Have you received any monies from the faith-based initiative funds authorized by executive order of President Bush?
If you have, what per centage of that has translated to your salary?
I ask because in the example of religious boot camp for children which operated for 32 days, approximately 290,000 of the approximately 312,000 dollars was paid in salaries for a 32 day boot camp.
Barry,
I’m in for $25.
Used to live in Indy and often miss it.
Mike Pence is the worst.
Good luck. You look to this former Hoosier to be a terrific candidate.
What a great Blue America! Welcome Barry and Sherri! I love the UAW speech up top and the strong progressive message.
And how wonderful to have Joh host - he must be a great asset to the campaign!
Ann in AZ @ 70
Ann:
Don’t mean to step on Barry’s toes, but it is obvious to me. People like Tancredo use the bible and religion as a crutch. If Tancredo really believed in the teachings of Jesus, he wouldn’t have made those comments about New Orleans.
I see Jane swapped ot the video feed for the UAW rally speech up top, thats the greatest political speech Ive ever seen for anyone who wants to check it out.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 75
Great question. Things have changed. When we started running in 2005, there was a lot of shouts of “Why don’t you support the war and the troops?” Things like that. Especially when we would play “War” by Edwin Starr during one of our parade appearances.
Now, we have people showing up at Peace Rally’s and we have people seeking us out specifically over Iraq,as we just had here on site. The tide is turning.
Sorry to be late; welcome, Barry and thank you for having the courage, guts and fortitude to run again. I know Joh will be a great asset to your campaign.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 73
I agree 1000%. All this hoopla about ethanol hides the fact that more of our scarce tax dollars are going to subsidize agro-business while kids don’t have health care, people are squeezed because of the creditor-friendly bankruptcy “reform” that dems acquiesed to, wages are stagnant or falling, etc.
Ethanol is a scam. There is not enough viable land in this country to grow a corn crop on that will sustain ethanol use. Corn is a very inensive cop and the land on which it’s grown has to lay fallow after a couple of years of production just so its nutrients won’t be depleted. In order to produce enough corn for enough ethanol to replace fossil fuels, every spare bit of land that is currently undeveloped would have to be planted…never going to happen.
But, as with everything else in this country, the industry and the pols in its pocket depend on the gullibility of the people in this country and their lack of knowledge on the subject, along with their unwillingness to learn anything about it, to continue fooling people and pocketing money from special interests.
Jacqrat @ 84
My Spin Partner! NOW the party begins!
Jane’s Assistant @ 76
Jane, Thank YOU!
If I were a soldier on the ground in Iraq, I would want the best equipment and the best chance for survival. That is not what is happening.
These appropriations are supporting the war profiteers not the troops, and it is time to do the correct Constitutional Action and defund this Occupation.
Boston1775 @ 77
Any response to this question?
james @ 89
Barry will be right back, I’ll make sure he sees this, he is grabbing a drink real quick.
Folks, please try to stay on topic as a courtesy to our guest.
Barry, thank you for visiting the Lake today!
Please, please don’t cave on the $50B!
If we reward 3/18 performance now, we’ll be there until our Country is totally broke!
FiniFiniTOOBZ! @ 88
With all the crap going on in this country right now - he’d better make that a double…
If anyone else was as inspired by Barry’s YouTube up top as I was, here’s where to donate to help him get in office.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 80
Ann:
Don’t mean to step on Barry’s toes, but it is obvious to me. People like Tancredo use the bible and religion as a crutch. If Tancredo really believed in the teachings of Jesus, he wouldn’t have made those comments about New Orleans.
Or the ones about immigration control, either!
Barry, PLEASE Ann in AZ @ 70
I’m with Ann in AZ on this. I grew up a Christian and it’s what kept me from buying my father’s late-in-life slip into conservatism. The more you can do to make people realize that religious and moral ideals are directly related to Progressive ideals, the better, as far as I’m concerned.
ps: Hi to Sherri, I’m eagerly waiting for her next blog on Daily Kos.
The Lurking Mod @ 89
I thought after being burned by Carney a question regarding allotment of funds coming in would not be considered off-topic.
My bad?
james @ 88
We did not receive any of those funds. My salary when I was an active pastor was paid from offerings.
I was a United Methodist and we are more main stream. The free standing evangelical movements are the one’s with the boot camps, but thanks for asking and I hope that answers your concern.
Barry
james @ 96
Nope, timing of arrival of posts just made it look that way. Prolly me and a couple of other hopeless football nuts above were the intended targets. My Bad, definitely.
Regarding my question at 32, there is more information written by Rev. Andrew J. Weaver Ph.D. and Lawrence H. McGaughey, Esq. about Milking a Church Cash Cow.
On Barry’s campaign website, there is a set of brief statements of his positions on a number of issues. Here’s what it says under “Iraq Occupation”:
(Emphasis added.)
More like this, please!
Ann in AZ @ 93
Not stepping on my toes at all. I don’t appreciate people using their faith in that manner either.
Thanks for the response and the honesty.
There are many chameleons out here looking to blend in and hide their true colors until it’s too late.
Cases in point, Baird and Carney, although Carney’s involvement with Feith was right out there in plain view.
I’m still unemployed so I can’t match the big donors up top but I’m in for $10 - anyone wanna match me?
