My “Morning” Ritual Playlist

Morning Ritual: Get out of bed, turn on boom box in kitchen tuned to KCRW, listen to Morning Becomes Eclectic, make coffee, drink coffee.
Even people who hate LA love this radio music show. “So how are you liking Chicago?” I ask my friend who recently moved there from LA. “Oh I love it, the big trees, the lake, the taverns…. but I really miss Morning Becomes Eclectic“.
For those of you who feel “out of it” or like “an old geezer ” musically, you owe it to yourself to listen to this show and stay up on some new music. Commercial free and hosted by a warm, non- obnoxious DJ named Nic Harcourt the show has turned me on to some really cool stuff. And although I’m very picky, when I hear a song that I like, I immediately go to KCRW’s website, find out who it is, check out the artist’s MySpace page, buy the record on I-Tunes, and sometimes put it in my playlist for you all. This week’s YouTube selections are some bands that I’ve “discovered” there. The show has also been extremely influential on Madison Avenue and Hollywood music supervisors and directors:
David Chase, creator of “The Sopranos,” has said that it was while driving around L.A. listening to KCRW that he first heard “Woke Up This Morning” by little-known English band Alabama 3 and realized instantly that he’d found the perfect theme song to capture the sense of dark paranoia central to his depiction of modern mob life.
The show marks their 30th year anniversary with a nine hour marathon on Labor Day covering 1977- Present. If you’re not in Southern California, you can listen live or to the archived shows at kcrw.com.
You can also find KCRW and Morning Becomes Eclectic as well as their other fine music and NPR news programs at I-Tunes Radio in the “Eclectic” listings.
And if you dig the show, don’t forget to support it and become a SUBSCRIBER.

About Firedoglake
Hello Ms Sparks.
So last Friday I checked in on http://www.thetopfloorlive.com at five minutes to midnight (PDT) as recommended in last weeks The Spin, but instead of you I only got to view a techno party. That’s not what I set my alarm clock for on that Saturday morning. I must have missed you. In the chat they told you were on earlier. Eventually at about quarter to one you were seen but not heard for a couple of seconds. So what happened? Did they change time schedule?
Apologies, if I just sounded like a spoilt child complaining about having missed a show on TV.
So close
Right On, Donita!!!
Sorry for the delay folks, someone tied my toobz today and I had serious glitches with the Project Playlist site. I had to scramble and put this YouTube playlist together instead and that caused us to run late. You may flog me if you wish.
finifinito @ 4
Nah, only the rethuglican party is into the flogging thing. It’s in line with all their other desires to turn the world back to the 1830s.
I like Bonde Do Role, Donita
Hi Fini!
hi elliot!
I saw in the listings that Donita Sparks is playing with the Donnas, Sept 21 at the Hawthorne Theater in Portland. Yay!
Coincidentally, that’s the 13th anniversary of when I saw the Fall play at La Luna during Brix’s brief return stint with the band.
And since I’m feeling logorrheic, I’ll mention that I met Tim Kerr from the Big Boys at his art opening last night on Alberta Street. He is a very nice and smart guy, as I bet you know.
Enough name-dropping for one comment, then.
Kiss kiss, everybody!
Listening to Emmy Lou Harris on original vinyl.
Jonathan @ 9
why not join us for a little bit? Emmy can wait.
No shit?
COOL!
I might have to remember that and go make a big FDL sign to take.
Elliott @ 10
Oh, Elliott, I do both.
Donita, You’re missing Thom Hartmann on Air America. Gotta support that progressive talk radio!
The date is on a sticky note on my monitor as I type.
Jonathan @ 12
oh, OK then!
Bustednuckles @ 11
Might be an opp for an FDL pre-funk at a local establishment, say the Lucky Lab.
You music lovers are funny :-)
Gimme a good rhythm and good dancers and that’s where it’s at! :) Fun looking video.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW. Friends in LA turned me on to it and lo, all these artists I loved were performing live and chatting with Nick Harcourt. Awesome.
swag @ 8
Yes, Portland! You should come down to the show. We can arm wrestle for who buys drinks.
Address, time?
Hey everyone, just got here and catching up.
Norman Wagner @ 1
Really? I know that they were having difficulties and so we didn’t debut the track until 12;45. You didn’t hear it? That’s strange, we were all dancing too.
LOL!
Not my skinny ass, I’ve been whupped by girls before. I would just go ahead and buy, ‘course I’d more than likely be lit already.

The only political office I’ve ever occupied was president of my fraternity at the University of Illinois, in the 1960s.
I learned that individuals (all male) respond to passion.

Amilius @ 13
Is that I music show? I can’t handle commercials on radio. They’re so loud.
I love
“You’re a Wolf”

W00T! The party weekend begins in earnest!
I’m gonna do your friend’s Rock N Roll bingo at my brother’s brouhaha this weekend at the Padgett Compound in lovely Hancock County, IN. [Hoosierese]We’s roastin’ us up some hawg![/Hoosierese]
I’m taking the small club PA, a digital projector and screen and my dance floor lights and gonna have a dancefloor on the patio. I’m taking the karaoke discs that my buddy has painstakingly purchased nearly every modern rock oriented karaoke disc of the last 5 years. It’s a throwdown of a hoedown!
Donita Sparks @ 19
I’ll bring some roller derby chicks to stand in for me.
blast from the past: 40th anniversary Summer of Love concert this weekend in Golden Gate Park

OT: Bay Area coffee lovers – a moment of silence. the founder of Peet’s Coffee has left this mortal coil.
Donita Sparks @ 22
Ehm, no. I feel so dumb right now, because I turned down the volume because of that techno. At 12:45 I was checking some other sites but had the Top Floor window still open. I remember that the guy, Hughes, or what his name is tried to interview you, but the audio didn’t came through and nothing could be understood, so they quickly switched back to that techno audio stream.
finifinito @ 30
That sounds awesome. Gotta have the lights.
Remember…. Beatles 5, INXS 12, No Doubt 25, Go Gos 40, Oingo Boingo 52…. BINGO!!!
Here’s a band that never seemed to make it across the pond, they’re all the rage in dance clubs in Europe while I was stationed there in the Eighties…

All rightie then, see you at the show.
I’m the drunk old skinny guy with a baseball cap, glasses, and a white goatee.
finifinito @ 4
I already feared my initial reply broke the system. No I didn’t. I thought the topic was deliberately recalled for an hour or so, since Ms. Hamsher posted a new topic at 3:10 and you didn’t want to steal her thunder.
I see what you mean by Eclectic!
I like them all!
I’d love to stir that into a morning cuppajo.
Norman Wagner @ 39
Oh that sucks. The wideo will be archived on my website soon. I’ll let you know next week.
CTuttle @ 41
Okay, that was awful! *s*
punaise @ 38
I may live in Maine, but I still get my Peets shipped from CA.
My favorite Peets story: Guy escapes from jail. Cops learn he’s a Peets drinker, so they stake out the Walnut Square store (then the only one). Sure enough, nab the guy the next morning.
Bustednuckles @ 47
I’m the jackass on stage with the microphone. I’ll look for you.
A very (very) special Larry Craig remix (new words): Tap Three Times.
GordonM @ 54
Let me guess, Tap three times if you want it in the cooooorn hole.
God Bless Nic H. One of the only “DJs” left in this world. And………he lives in Los Angeles!!!

Eclectic Culture Club song for Tucker Carlson.
CTuttle @ 41
This was one of those bands only true electroclash lovers heard over here in the States. I read about them in NME back in the day and special ordered a cassette from them back then. I remember this song but never saw the video until now. I had to wait like 4 weeks to get that Modern Talking tape because the record store ordered it for me from some East Coast distributor. You just fed the VIDEO to me in about ten seconds. I love the TOOBZ!
Bustednuckles @ 55
Getting warm. One of the most dreadful songs in history, but well worth the watch.
GordonM @ 54
Oy vey.
GordonM @ 52

Why doesn’t Tancredo just buy himself a white robe and hood?
Via TPM, the people of New Orleans shouldn’t get any more taxpayer Gravy Train.

Donita Sparks @ 50
That’s appreciated. :)

Sen. Warner’s press conference on his retirement coming up on CSpan now. I recommend watching if you can. I get the feeling he is ready for a fight with the WH the next 16 months.
Slothrop @ 69

Muddy Waters! Sometimes even the white boys can do some mighty fine blues.
KO just said that if Craig stays in office until Sept. 30th, he will be a pinata.
The NRA has not decided yet whether it will ask Craig to resign his position on their board. Apparently they didn’t quite understand what Craig meant when he said he was a straight shooter.
Loo Hoo. @ 74
Loo Hoo, I didn’t have the blues before, but I sure do now!!
.Thank you for the treat!

I’d like to recommend any of the youtubes for a guitar duo named ‘Rodrigo y Gabriela’ to any who haven’t already heard of them already.
Hey Donita
Need tickets at the Hawthorne club and is that Portland Oregon LOL? My daughter and I will come from Bend but I hate long drives Portland, Maine is geographically undesirable. And thanks for the music
