Petraeus Attempts To Manipulate Australian Election With False Claims About Iraq from Think Progress by Faiz
On Monday, President Bush will visit Australia to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. The White House is using the trip to try to influence the Australian election, where Bush’s good friend John Howard is pitted in a contest against Labor leader Kevin Rudd.

Howard was an early supporter of the Iraq invasion and has remained one of Bush’s few solid foreign allies. Prior to the 2004 U.S. presidential election, Howard weighed in, claiming a Bush reelection was needed in order to “stay and finish the job” in Iraq.

Now, the Iraq war is dragging down Howard’s chances of being reelected. 57 percent of Australians want to end the war. Rudd, who leads the Labor Party, has “made it clear he will withdraw the Australian combat forces from Iraq by the middle of next year.” Recent polls indicate Labor leads Howard’s coalition by 14 points. Howard has yet to set a date for the election, but it is expected to occur later this year.

The White House appears to be using Gen. David Petraeus as a PR flack to assist Howard’s reelection effort. Petraeus offered a one-on-one interview with The Australian, timed to coincide with Bush’s visit. In the interview, Petraeus said Bush’s Iraq strategy is working:

General Petraeus told The Australian during a face-to-face interview at his Baghdad headquarters there had been a 75 per cent reduction in religious and ethnic killings since last year.

There’s basically two more steps to take now.

First of all, on the FDL home page itself, look along the right sidebar, scrolling down as much as you need to, until you find the small final box that says something like META: site admin, login, register, etc. Click on the “register” option, and set up a login/password name for FDL itself (this is separate from Facebook). If you are doing it all from the same window, clicking the back button will usually take you back to where you last hard refreshed the page – because that is what is loaded in your cache memory.

That’s very correct. Historically there have been tensions between the native Taiwanese and the Kuomintang folks who came to Taiwan with ChIang Kai-shek and took over. I’ve been told that that tension has subsided over the last couple of decades.

Just pondering about who might revive the great tradition of Frank Church in Idaho and give the great state someone to be PROUD of.

Here’s some wild “hopeful” speculation…Picabo Street, Jake Plummer (who fought with the Tillman family against the Pentagon to get the Pat Tillman case reopened), Larry Echohawk (coming out of retirement)…all are native Idahoans, though I don’t know if Plummer has a residence there anymore.

I just now ran across this article by H.D.S. Greenway of The Boston Globe. He does an excellent comparison between what happened in Vietnam and what’s happening in Iraq. It’s short and well written. But it fails to capture one important point of similarity: there was no vital interest of the U.S. at stake in either case. Both were wars of choice. And both were/are wars that were protracted for reasons of presidential vanity, i.e., republican presidents not wanting to be seen as having led the nation to a defeat.

With the long-awaited Patraeus White House report on progress in Iraq due in two weeks, Gen. David Patraeus gave new meaning to the expression, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics,” when he:

…told the Australian that there had been a 75 percent reduction in religious and ethnic killing since last year

You read something like that and ask yourself, how can that be? You remember the more than 50 Iraqis killed at a religious festival the other day, the 500 Yazidis killed two weeks ago, the tortured victims of death squads found throughout Iraq every day and you ask yourself, how can there be a 75% reduction in killings in Iraq? Well, it’s easy. You just don’t count the bodies.

Of course the Bush administration has never made any meaningful effort to track civilian fatalities in Iraq, but as hard as they try to ignore it, the killings continue and the bodies pile up. So where did Gen. Petraeus come up with his number? In all of 2006, there were 16,564 reported (emphasis on reported) civilian deaths, and in the first eight months of 2007, there has been 14,732 deaths. So, civilian deaths are down about 11%…but there are four months left in the year. Or was Gen. Petraeus comparing the same time periods from last year and this year? If that’s the case, in the first 8 months of 2006, there were 8,490 civilian deaths versus the 14,732 in the first 8 months of 2007, which is an increase of nearly 75%. Is Gen. Petraeus using Karl Rove’s math? When the White House was asked about this, Tony Snow said:

MR. SNOW: …The other thing is, how one measures overall violence, it would be interesting to see what that metric is. General Petraeus clearly has a different view of that. I would defer to him on that.
