Paul Kane at the WaPo has a fascinating glimpse into the investigations of soon-to-be-former AG Alberto Gonzales’ politicization efforts at the DOJ. From Kane:
• The investigation has gone well beyond just Monica Goodling, the former counsel to Gonzales who admitted in congressional testimony in May that she frequently “crossed the line” in her hiring decisions by using political criteria for jobs that were not intended to be political by their nature. The internal investigators, who have the power to recommend criminal investigations, had previously acknowledged they were examining Goodling’s hiring practices, but this document shows that former Gonzales chief of staff D. Kyle Sampson and two other Justice aides are under inquiry.
• Investigators are not limiting their interviews to people who sought out non-political jobs; instead, they are also asking questions of candidates for senior political appointments.
• In one brief question, the IG-OPR questionnaire asks whether any White House officials sat in on the interviews with senior Justice Officials.
• The investigators are particularly focused on whether Goodling and other Justice officials were using personal political questions when making hiring decisions. Investigators want to know if interviewees were asked:
- to name “your favorite president, legislator, public figure, or Supreme Court justice”
- “what kind of conservative you were (law and order; social; fiscal)”
- what was “your position on the war on terror”
Fascinating fishing for the squirrelly conduct, isn’t it? Guess we’ll see…
(I thought this photo, via kthpryn, was hilarious. And I’ve been dying to find a post to use it with…hehehehe)

Christy! Zed!
ooh! a zed! *happy dance*
Missed it by that much…..
let’s go fishin!
Ironicalness: Abu Gonzales going to prison because of non-political appointees in the IG office he could not “purge”.
And here I thought Irony was Dead. Maybe not.
Would it be this investigation that DiFi and Chuckie are preparing to throw under the bus for a “suitable” AG replacement?
HELL NO! We can have both the investigation and a good AG nomination!
Every time you post something like this Christy, it makes me feel hopeful.
I hope these investigations come to appropriate conclusions. However, I think most will end with pardons. At least the little preznit fellow is going to get writer’s cramp from signing all of them.
Now that is a picture!
Christy:
Hope your day is going better–pace two threads ago…
di-fi and schumer
No- that’s the senate investigation- this is a REAL investigation- where ya get indicted an go ta jail.
The thing ta watch out for, though, is a DOJ investigation that’s just a smokescreen- goes on til the final day of the administration and keeps anyone else from pokin around- an gives the head Clusterfucker a rationale for “no comment on an ongoin vestigation”.
peanutbutter @ 7
I pray to God, they aren’t that cowardly. (At this point I think it would take divine intervention for Democratic leadership to show some courage.)
Badwater @ 9
Nah, he’s probably got an auto-pen machine provided by CheneyBurton for just such a purpose.
Impeach the MotherEffer!
Maybe with him gone, some of the people under him will come out and say what’s been going on. I know it seems like there’s been a few leaks to the press, so maybe a flood will follow.
Either way, I guess it’s going to have to wait until October, as Iraq and Patraeus will be the first order of the day, right?
peanutbutter @ 7
I thought this was an internal investigation and was separate from the congressional ones.
I have spoken with a guy who got interviewed by Kyle Sampson for a DOJ spot. He said half the interview was focused on why he did not do more campaigning.
This guy bleeds Red, and his answers were still not good enough for Kyle.
Loyal Bushies uber alles.
rwcole @ 12
If it’s career DoJ folks doing it, it will continue beyond the end of little boots admin and be completed properly next president.
rwcole @ 12
emptywheel seems to think Leahy has been collaborating with Fine. I think this would lessen the chance of any smokescreen investigation.
Those naughty children! I am sure they were just funnin when they asked those questions! No harm done! Can’t you take a joke?! Ha-Ha-Ha!
(((((((Christy for President!)))))))
Any wagers on whether AL-VINNN is one of the othr former aides under investigation? (in keeping with the squirrelly theme…)
I have to think of Abu being squirrelly in the sense of flighty and unforthcoming. Cunning is Abu not. You have to be clever to be cunning.
Hee-hee!
great picture, Chirsty.
I’d love to print out post-card size copies to hand out at the “Summer of Love” 40th anniv concert this weekend here in SF’s Golden Gate Park.
I’m enjoying the pic on just a home-brewed latte….
The grinning-ist folks at the concert could take this image to whole new levels.
Of course, I’m not sure if the report back may incomprehensible…
albert fall @ 17
I hope he got sent a questionnaire.
I wouldn’t be surprised if some damning answers are in the replies to these. Goodling was no open book during her testimony, and the fact that they were able to glean her confession of asking political questions, really says something. I suspect this sort of thing was rampant.
Warner expected to announce end of Senate career LINK

I love watching squirrels, but I’ve missed their cunning side …. must watch more closely.
dakine01 @ 22
dakine, my bet is, if someone’s going to flip, it’ll be Alvin. He just doesn’t seem like the “FU, I don’t mind going to jail” type.
I’m with Jesselyn Radack on this. Some honest folk at OIG may nip around the edges of these scandals, but anything short of a special prosecutor constitutes (at least functionally) a stalling tactic.
Christy, thanks for the Bruce link on post ago. Your efforts in battling the forces of darkness are much appreciated.
OT, but the news is so good I can’t help myself. I’m actually proud to be an Iowan today.
Now, we’ll see if this survives appeal….
ralphbon @ 29
Who would have the authority to appoint a special prosecutor?
Fern @ 32
Loyal Bushies. Same as it ever was.
Look… These people think they won and they were free to do whatever they wanted to… especially to insure that they would win again. Absolutely no understanding of the constitution and no moral compass whatsoever.
You can tell a republican because they have no idea of what “ethical behavior” is… Think amoral behavior is limited to abortion and being gay.
Think about it. It’s appalling.
I have a feeling the Goopers are about to roll-out Craig in a Lecter-dolly for his ‘resignation’ speech.
How long before Fox News puts a ‘D’ next to his name in the crawl?
Can’t wait for Dana Perino to start expounding on these partisan fishing expeditions.
Count how many times she starts sentences with the word “Look.” A real I’ll-put-em-in-their-place dis from behind the microphone.
EvilDrPuma @ 31
Just say a link on CNN.com saying it had been halted.
Iowa gay marriage..
Right on schedule- a judicial action gives the goopers their favorite campaign issue back again….
How the hell do they arrange this shit?
kirk murphy @ 33
That’s what I thought. So under the circumstances this is the best deal going.
JF @ 37
Crap!
The evil judge action on gay marriage- actually ordering marriage licenses- comes right after a gooper senator gets caught playin footsie in the men’s room….I’ll be damned- timing couldn’t have been better for distracting the snake handlers from the realization that they’re bein played for suckers in a shell game.
Dana Perino will be a trip. She talks so fast and says absolutely nothing. But I know some think she’s hot.
Other Pat @ 36
i gotta say: with the sound down/off Dana is acceptable —– unlike tony Faux. he makes the skin crawl like a republic senator under the stall wall . . .
Biodun @ 42
I think she’s quite attractive. Up until the time she opens her mouth and the gibberish starts pouring out…
By the way… It’s not good enough for the repubs to crash and burn.
We need not to walk in and take over after they have fled… or been kicked out. We need to have a progressive agenda and end the system as usual in the beltway

I hate to sound like a cranky “get off my lawn” kind of guy, but I really think the Federalist Society is un-American, and I really would like to see the government purged of Federalist Society members.

Bustednuckles @ 49
Oh, that’s a TOTAL Briar Rabbit. As if Karl would hate that, screaming, “Please, please, DON’T put rodents in my pants; don’t I say, please DON’T. And especially not ferrets, lordy, lordy what ever you do, don’t go get ferrets and put them in my pants!”
dakine01 @ 44
Patently unfair.
You expect truth from a White House spokesperson’s mouth?

Mass Impeachement.
The Federalist Society judges have placed allegiance to their literally treasonous revolutionalry cell ahead of their Oath to Uphold and Defend the Constitution.
Impeachment is a political act, not a matter of proof of criminal charges.
Impeach the Federalist Society traiturs who have infiltrated the US Judiciary. They are agents of a subversive, revolutionary conspriracy to overthrow the duly elected Government of the United States.
I had a feeling something big must have been lurking in the background for Gonzo to step aside.
Thank God some of the professionals in the DOJ have survived the Bush tsunami long enough to nail the bast*rds.

Well this is classic Republican strategy. Put gay rights ballot measures up in as many states as possible during presidential election years.
Now all they need is for the Dems to nominate Hillary and Repugs have half a chance in ‘08.
Remember, they don’t have to actually win the election, just get close enough that their voting machines and nefarious operators can do the rest.

LHP – “incrediable qualificarions”? Were they look for a Repub with incriminal qualifictions?
Bustednuckles @ 89
I receive my instructions via the chip Kos planted directly into my skull.
Does this really matter? Schumer, that piece of GOP-loving shit, has told Bushie that if Bush is nice to the Democraps and appoints an OK Gonzales replacement, that he and Feinstein (at least) will back away from investigations into Gonzales and the DOJ.
What difference does it make what juicy tidbits are found if the Democraps are going to do their cave-in act and bare their asses again for Bush to penetrate with a dry broomstick?
Without mitigating Mr. Gonzales’s disgraceful and criminal behavior, I want his handler even more. Rove.
mc @ 95
It’s so much more efficient that way
OT-Driving to work I caught the tail end of a story here in New Orleans. Seems some former residents of public housing have taken over the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) offices in an attempt to speak with the top guy in charge. At this time the local police, the SWAT team and the National Guard are on the scene. Seems a standoff at this point, but with all that firepower on standby, things could get dicey very quickly.

According to some editor at Murdoch’s paper in Australia, the expectation is (rumblings) that Bushie will cancel his trip (for APEC meeting) at the last minute. This would be seen as part of the beginnings of the “new product roll-out”. Along with it comes a major ramp-up of anti-Iran rhetoric and accusations from the WSJ, Faux News, AEI, etc.
Keep your eyes on the entrails. They have a fortune to tell over the next few weeks.

looseheadprop @ 90
This and the example mentioned above are really the level where the rubber hits the road. It is one thing to testify before the Congress and speak in generalities when you’re bad memory doesn’t get in the way. But the real work occurs when investigators track down specific persons interviewed for jobs and ask them specifically what happened during those interviews. These people may not be keen to be questioned but I doubt many are going to be willing to lie or obstruct justice on behalf of the likes of Monica Goodling or Kyle Sampson. I am not sure when it will happen but I think both can kiss their law licenses goodbye and somewhere down the road Sampson at least may see some jail time. It won’t be as much as they deserve but it will be something.
BlueStateRedHead @ 84
This guy is pure Red-state. That said, he says Bush is terrible because Bush betrayed the ideological principles of conservatism.
Greenwald has a great line in his book comparing the Reds and the Red-staters: Communism was a program, Communists were the guys who used the brand name to achieve power–Conservatism is a Barry Goldwater type world view, but Bush and Co. highjacked the name to grab power without following any of the precepts.
How can we be strong when our leader does this.
No more money for this war…no more!!!!!

C’mon! Buck up camper! They ARE “doing something”! Didn’t you read about Reid’s cave-in already on Iraq? Hell’s bells, how is NOT agreeing to go along with the GOP AGAIN not doing something? That’s doing plenty. More than enough, in fact. No doubt, he will take Bush’s call for $50 billion more for Iraq (and Iran) and add a little something extra just as a good will gesture! Quite grandfatherly of that piece of shit.
Eh, that’s Murdoch.

Just a note – a Democratic Governor wants a State Constitutional amendment to outlaw same sex marriage and he fully plans to bring this up in the next legislative session.
Also, within the past 4 years (all while there was a Democratic Governor and the legislature evenly divided), a law was passed to not recognize same sex marriages from any other State * and * not to recognize ‘common law’ marriages anywhere. Iowa used to recognize common law, at least within the State, until this was passed. While Iowa may be purple, there are enough people with old fashion ideas that have power.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 117

Chet Culver is gonna do that?
Tom Davis is going to run for J. Warner’s seat. I doubt the Repub party would support Allen. In a state that just elected Jim Webb, I would think Davis, a faux moderate, would be the party’s choice-particularly if M. Warner ran.

do we have a shot at a democrat in his place?
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 125
Culver is already on record as to at least bring it up in the next legislative session. Although it wasn’t said definitely that it would be a State Constitutional Amendment, there’s been talk of it for a while.
More progress in Iraq:
The tiny pre-Islamic Iraqi sect known as Yazidis is in danger of extinction. The nearly half a million Yazidis in Iraq are currently the target of deadly attacks by both Sunni and Shiite Muslim groups, forcing most of them to flee their areas….

You know I’ve never understood this line of reasoning. First of all, what do men seem to spend a great deal of time trying to get women to do? And then what’s one of the worst insults to sling around? Now then, if I was a woman and heard a guy using that, I’d put a few together and head in the other direction.
Harry Reid wants to make nice with Senate Republicans over Iraq. Schumer and Feinstein want to play footsy with Bush over the US Attorney and NSA investigations.
Should we really be surprised when DINOs behave as DINOs? Every so often something irritates them and they briefly lash out but it never lasts. Throw them a bone and they go back to being docile enablers.
It has not yet and clearly never will penetrate their thick skulls that Bush is the worst President in our history, that this is not business as usual, that he must be stopped, and that it is their Constitutional duty to stop him. Nope, old habits die hard and they are just too used to selling out. Criminal Republicans and feckless Democrats the twin plagues of our age.
Elliott @ 122
Recently, within the last month or so, ALL blogs have been blocked on US military bases too. I used to be able to view all of my favorite blogs (except for DKos…the censors blocked it due to “profanity”). Just this month, that block went blog-wide. I’ll have to see if it applies only to blogs of a certain political persuasion…

2) Yes, especially if Bush make a campaign appearance for the R candidate.

The president insisted that the economy was strong and could weather turbulence in the markets.
as far as the think progress blog beng blocked
everyone knows I am a progressive by every definition of the word but in this case I believe the military has justification for shutting down critical information
look, like it or not they are our military, they have got no choice but to obey orders, unless those orders break our law, like them or not they must follow those orders
I think allowing blogs like think progress bring their moral down and undermine their ability.
while I believe in the free transfer of information, I really do not believe those in the military are entitled to the same freedom as those who are not
now I know I am going to get punished for that sentiment and I am glad everyone knows my progressive nature to realize I am not a troll, I am not a concern troll

I disagree. IF they are going to provide POLITICAL propaganda from the right, then they MUST provide it from the regular people too (as opposed to the so-called “left”). When ~65% of the PEOPLE want us out of Iraq, are opposed to Bush, etc, that is NOT “lefty”, that is the core of the country. No way it is OK to block that from soldiers.
I HATE that the main “news” channel that is displayed at any time in a military office is Faux. Bogus propaganda that is demonstrably wrong by life itself is NOT helpful to the grunts on the ground.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 145
the government shouldn’t bail out the lenders, they took the risk, the knew they were making questionable loans
the lenders took the risk and they have to pay the price of their bad investment
however the borrowers were sold a bill of goods the lenders knew was bad
for instance, if you build a car that blows up when you start it, you tell the buyer the car is safe, we find out the car is not safe
it is not up to the buyer to make that car safe it is up to the builder to make it safe
that is the ananlogy
Elliott @ 147
Bush turned a blind eye to these phony loans when they were being made because they bolstered his “ownership society” theme. He could have, of course, sought tighter regulations on mortgage loans which would have prevented the problem but Bush and company just hates them those nasty regulations. So the sh*t hits the fan and as he has every other time in his life, Bush walks away acting like its someone else’s fault.

Really? Who decides what “information” is suitable for military viewing. There is a reason for the different set of laws called the UCMJ, but I never heard any valid reason for censoring what can be read by soldiers. This is really dangerous. This is how you get a military that is out of touch with the civilian world. According to the Pentagon, it’s OK for evangelicals to proselytize on bases, but a blog is off limits. Give me a break, perris
Praedor Atrebates @ 155
I agree with your sentiments but the reality is our military who are in a theatre of engagement are subject to our propaganda.
I don’t like the fact that faux news is allowed to be broadcast and oposing points of view are not
I don’t like it
but they are the military, they don’t enjoy the same personal or constitutional freedom as a civilian and they are subject to the propaganda of the military
perris @ 149
Great idea. Let’s lie to them.
re: Harry Reid
“I’m not a chicken. I never have been a chicken“
perris @ 162
This might come out wrong but … that’s awful paternalistic.
My Dad was a Marine in WWII – the kind who chewed barbed wire and spit out nails – and he’d just as soon tell you bullshit to your face if he thought you weren’t telling him the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and that went for everyone, including and especially those who might have outranked him in any way. If he were still alive he’d be out in front trying to repeal the censorship on the military bases and he’d be giving the officers hell for keeping the truth, whatever it is from being censored.
This is still America, and these people are adults who can make their own decisions – maybe not completely within the framework of the military but certainly when they fulfill their commitment, or retire, and can act on the truth as they see it, and the best way to make your own decision is in the Marketplace of Ideas whether it is slanted right or left doesn’t matter as long as you can discern the truth from that marketplace.
End the censorship!
Great pictures of Clinton laughing and Mr. Squirrel goin’ fishin’.

We have seen a taste of what might be coming when a lot of ARMs change up payments on people this fall. I hope it’s not like hitting an iceberg compared to the previous ice cube. But, we need to be prepared and have some comprehensive way to soften the blow, to stretch out the impact.
Helping people on the edge to pay their loans would cut back on the numbers of defaults.
Actually, in anticipation of a large problem, there might be a way to precipitate part of the crisis earlier, to spread out the full impact and to allow us to manage a recovery over a longer period of time when it’s more feasible.
Helping with liquidity, as Bernanke has already done, is going to be vital.
If there’s any way to spread the initial blow and then gradually repay the cost later, that would manage it better — though it is likely to be quite costly.
Protecting, somehow, against spillover to banks is also vital. We can’t afford to let some people’s downfall cause others to crash because they just happen to be standing nearby. This might even require trading in certain stocks to be stopped (per the usual market rules).
Some “people” must face their losses with courage and accept it. If they don’t then many many more could be damaged unnecessarily and unfairly. We can’t let some people be “too large to fail” or else the distributed cost will be dangerously widespread and international. Can we afford that?
