The Blue America team have decided that we will not support any candidate who votes for the $50 billion extra for the war that George Bush is asking for (on top of the $147 billion already allocated). As Howie Klein notes, of the four Blue America candidates who have taken a position on it, all have said that they will not vote for it:
Steve Cohen (TN)
John Hall (NY)
Jerrold Nadler (NY)
Hilda Solis (CA)
We hope that everyone else will follow suit.
Working together liberal blogs raised over a hundred thousand dollars for Darcy Burner last weekend. It was an amazing effort driven by a strong desire to see progressive values pursued and the war ended. George Bush says there is not enough money to expand children’s health care coverage, he defies any attempt to hold him accountable for the money he has already squandered in Iraq even as more evidence of gross mismanagement and outright theft comes to light every day. He keeps banging the drums of war with Iran and expands the Overton window with nothing but hubris and malicious lies. We want to see the country led by decency and sanity and that does not mean capitulating to George Bush. If that is where a candidate wants to go, it is where we part ways.
Go Yankees.

Ron D,
How goes the recovery?
This is good. Wondering if all Demo presidential candidates will be against it the ($50 bil,).
Fuck the fucking yankees.
Is that a flat-out “no”, or one that doesn’t tie the money to getting the troops out?
Bush Dogs… don’t hunt around here no more.
Sheesh, Jane, nose-bleed section, much? How’d you do up there?
She’s doing well, Jim. Thanks.
Not doing what Bush wants avoids having to greatly compromise on any bill he will sign.
If the Dems were thinking (that’s different from calculating), they’d shut down Bush’s corrupt practices and spend all their time investigating them.
It’s all about destroying the current GOP brand. If they don’t do that, the assholes will be with us forever.

I pointed out something very important at the start of the day;
when boston won the world series it upset the ballance of the eternities it fractured the circle of life.
that is when we had that pseunami I might add, where people just disapppeared from the face of the earth…a rapture of sorts
the yankees guarding the gates of armageddon was one of the safeguards fractured
if the cubs are able to compronise the next safeguard then we can all kiss our butts g’bye
in order for the circle of life to be repaired, they yankees must regain the tittle ring, the world series
why do you think this is called the “world’ series anyway…there are no other countries involved
it is called the ‘world” series becuase that is what is at stake
go yankees

At the closed-door senior staff meeting at 7:30 a.m. in the Roosevelt Room, Rove was surprised with a slide show of photos chronicling his nearly seven years at President Bush’s side, through good times and bad.
White House Press Secretary Tony Snow told CNN that Rove was so touched by the tribute that he didn’t have any final words for his colleagues. “He was pretty choked up,” Snow said.
This is good politics. Now if some of you would help me with my ‘Heath Shuler, Bush Dog Democrat’ profile I’d be very appreciative.

AP – President Bush huddled with top military leaders about the Iraq war Friday, and Pentagon officials defended efforts to rid the Iraqi national police of sectarian bias and corruption, even as an independent review found the force too tainted to continue.
If you attack Iran, you’re going to nuke it – how else would you breach the heavily fortified Natanz complex? No point in attacking Iran without an attempt to destroy Natanz. If that happens, you have to storm the Bastille or else the world will, hopefully.

As for the BushDogs, I get a return phone call from Rep. Sestak’s scheduler today trying to set up a face to face with me and the Congressman in Oct. I mentioned the $50 Billion. He had already heard of calls coming in about it. His office has great respect for us. I thanked him for coming back to FDL to explain his yes vote on the $147B but that wouldn’t wash this time. Mentioned Carney and how he has become personna non grata with Act Blue/Blue America folks and wouldn’t want to see that happen to Rep. Sestak . . . . . let’s hope they get it this time.
OT – Tony Snow says he wants to raise money for cancer treatment – “I’m not gonna bang the tin cup looking for government money – maybe I’ll just try to raise some money myself”.

The sheets of paper seemed to be everywhere the lawmakers went in the Green Zone, distributed to Iraqi officials, U.S. officials and uniformed military of no particular rank. So when Rep. James P. Moran Jr. (D-Va.) asked a soldier last weekend just what he was holding, the congressman was taken aback to find out.
In the soldier’s hand was a thumbnail biography, distributed before each of the congressmen’s meetings in Baghdad, which let meeting participants such as that soldier know where each of the lawmakers stands on the war. “Moran on Iraq policy,” read one section, going on to cite some the congressman’s most incendiary statements, such as, “This has been the worst foreign policy fiasco in American history.”

“…you cannot save your face and your ass at the same time…” – vachon@shadrach.net
FYI:
The $147 billion is this fall’s still-pending allotment of “emergency” supplemental funding for our occupation of Iraq. That is the chosen vehicle for the funding of ongoing operations (and who knows what else) for Iraq and Afghanistan beginning with the October 1 start of the federal fiscal year. [May’s $120 billion capitulation supplemental vote funded Iraq only through this September, and included funding for the MRAP vehicles and domestic spending items.]
The Democrats are not requiring that the occupation of Iraq be funded within the regular annual Defense Appropriations Bill, for unknown reasons, and are allowing these “emergency” supplementals to continue – perhaps because these supplementals help obscure where the money is actually being allocated by the Pentagon.
To date, the House has passed both its FY 2008 Defense Authorization Bill and its FY 2008 Defense Appropriations Bill, but not the new supplemental request of $147 billion (plus another $50 billion now to be added) to fund Iraq beyond September 30th. The House and Senate have the exact same leverage with this new $197 billion supplemental request that they had in May with the previous $120 billion supplemental request.
The Senate has not yet passed either its Defense Authorization bill or its Defense Appropriations bill for FY 2008 (the Senate is working off the House-passed bills, and both bills will then end up in conference). The Senate still has great leverage via the FY 2008 Defense Authorization Bill to determine the policy of the United States toward Iraq after September 30 without impacting in any way funding and therefore “support” for the troops (and to try to convince the House in conference to see things their way).
We shouldn’t let the Democratic leadership pretend that they do not have powerful tools at hand to reverse course in Iraq, just because they have no desire or intention to seriously impede our seizure of Iraqi territory for American (and Israeli) purposes.
Whi in the hell would pay to hear Tony Snow speak? I would certainly pay not to hear him speak…$168 thou isn’t enough for Tony Snow. I wonder where he will pop up?
Beyond Bush Dogs
The “Bush Dog” campaign is great, but I think we can do a good deal more if we strategize properly, and look to maximize our potential for working with local activists.
For example, I’ve written about one such proposal in a diary at OpenLeft, “Beyond Bush Dogs? Proposal For A Pro-Active Battleground District Organizing Strategy”. It basically calls for using the vehicle of a nation-wide battleground district poll, building on the experience of MyDD’s earlier national poll, to highlight progressive values and issue positions in battleground districts, and use this information to lobby representatives, do media outreach, hold public meetings, and otherwise build progressive coalitions in battleground districts that can provide an ongoing grassroots lobbying presence to help counter the Versailles spin.
I talk more specifically about the poll itself in another diary, “Notes Toward A National Battleground District Poll”.
I want to be clear, I’m not tooting my own horn here. I’m building on ideas that others have already advanced, and I’m really just trying to get a conversation going. If others have better ideas, I’m all for them.
My bottom line point is that we need to change the game.
There are a LOT of pissed off people out there. We’re not a tiny minority. The challenge is to organize effectively, which we can do, if we’re willing to brainstorm together, combining proven effective strategies and tactics into a new whole.
Speaking of helping out Bush:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/8/31/102124/538
[Of course, Chris Murphy’s office ought to have known as much, and clarified this for you. I was surprised to hear back in May or so that yet another Iraq supplemental would be proposed this fall, rather than including funds in the annual defense appropriations bill, to fund Iraq going into FY 2008 - I’m not sure which approach would provide more leverage to the Congress against a veto, but for whatever reason the supplemental is where it’s at in the House right now for FY 2008’s proposed $197 billion dollars of new debt to maintain American-occupied Iraq.]
Rove, liar to the very bitter end.
Rawstory link:
On fighting genocide in Darfur, Rove argued that Bush hadn’t “refused to act,” despite his resistance to adding US troops to the region to stop the violence.
“While most of the globe ignored Sudan and Darfur or refused to act, this president labeled the violence there genocide — and pressed world leaders to take action,” Rove wrote of the extent of the president’s involvement.
In Rove’s endlessly perverted world of lies upon lies he turns the truth on its head and claims that Bush’s “action” was in “labeling” Darfur a genocide.
How much more of an asshole can this man be?

What I don’t understand is, why can’t Leahy or some of the other Congress critters that are being stonewalled in their investigations bargain (as in an old fashioned horse trade) with Bush that he’ll get his legislation and his money when they get the paperwork that and/or testimony they’ve subpoenaed? Isn’t this how it’s always been done?

Jane, I am a simple person in a small town in central Illinois that wants to let you know how thankful I am to have found FDL. Your words and those of the others here allow me to have such a greater understanding of things that no other site does.God bless you and all of your “friends”. My day starts here and ends here and you and Marcy and Trex and the rest make me feel like I have close friends that I never knew I had. Once again thank you from the bottom of my heart, Ron Webber
I came within 300 yds of being in Hilda Solis’ district but got stuck with Dreier, another closeted white guy, instead. Dang, it’s been a long time since I’ve been represented by someone as true as Ms. Solis. At least I get to help Russ Warner defeat Dreier next year. Rumor has it the gloves are coming off locally about Dreier’s orientation, which has been known forever but is rarely mentioned.
Did y’all know Howie Klein will be speaking at the Foothill Community Democrats’ meeting on Sept. 27 at the Peach Cafe in Monrovia? Meeting is from 7-9 pm. Anyone interested in coming? If so, the Mods know where to find me…

Hi, Ron, welcome to the FDL family. It’s quite a place, don’t you think? I’ve been hanging out here for a couple of years now, but I’ve never quite gotten over how cool it is to have found this new home.
It’s not enough just to say ‘we won’t support you’ we have to say ‘we will actively oppose you’… maybe that’s implied, but you have to set boundaries or the kids will run amok.
