This morning, someone at the non-partisan Government Accountability Office leaked its “strikingly negative” Iraq War assessment in an attempt to get the information contained therein out to the public before the White House and Pentagon could run interference on it. Has it gotten that bad, that people interested in telling the truth have to do cloak-and-dagger end runs around the Administration?
Why, yes, it has.
But in case you were at all doubtful that the White House and its enablers will spin even the most basic facts and data for political purposes, let me remind you of the things former Surgeon General Richard Carmona had to say about his tenure under the Bush administration:
[A]lthough most Americans believe that their Surgeon General has the ability to impact the course of public health as “the nation’s doctor,” the reality is that the nation’s doctor has been marginalized and relegated to a position with no independent budget, and with supervisors who are political appointees with partisan agendas. Anything that doesn’t fit into the political appointees’ ideological, theological, or political agenda is ignored, marginalized, or simply buried.
But surely they wouldn’t go in there and start mucking around with the actual data and micro-managing the SG’s reporting, would they? Oh, you betcha!
He said the administration often edited his speeches for politically controversial content and encouraged him to attend internal “political pep rallies,” the Wall Street Journal reports (Meckler, Wall Street Journal, 7/11). In addition, Carmona said he was required to mention Bush three times on every page of his speeches and was asked to make speeches to promote Republican political candidates, the New York Times reports. Carmona did not disclose the names of the administration officials who pressured him to support a political agenda over a scientific one. However, he said the officials included assistant HHS secretaries and top political appointees outside the department (Harris, New York Times, 7/11).
So what if people’s lives are endangered? BushCo knows that there’s no power on god’s green earth like PR. It’s how they run domestic policy and it’s how they’re running their apocalyptic cock-up of a war.
When Jerry McNerny came by to mumble and equivocate last week, I asked the following:
August 24th, 2007 at 6:21 pm
Also, with regards to the security situation in Iraq, the NIE scuttlebutt is that there basically is no Iraqi government. Reading in between the lines of the paper-thin “positive” talking points, it appears that yes, there is a group of people who meet and call themselves the Iraqi government (when they aren’t on vacation), but that basically the area that used to be known as Iraq has dissolved into a loose aggregation of violent caliphates, each one with its own warlords and militia.
It was pretty clear to me that in spite of the O’Hanlon set’s insistence that the NIE was chock full of good news, that what we were hearing was basically the extended dance mix of the Iraq Study Group’s “grave and deteriorating” assessment of Iraq from November, but with some happy talk inserted as window dressing for the benefit of the overly credulous wahoos up in the cheap seats.
A couple of days ago came proof that I was right.
Last week, a declassified National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq said there has been “measurable but uneven improvements in Iraq’s security situation,” in the midst of what was otherwise a gloomy and depressing report. Indeed, the NIE added that, despite some security improvements, severe violence in Iraq was likely to continue over the next six to 12 months.
As it turns out, the NIE may have intended to go further, but Gen. Petraeus gave the report a little touch-up.
The NIE, requested by the White House Iraq coordinator, Lt. Gen. Douglas E. Lute, in preparation for the testimony, met with resistance from U.S. military officials in Baghdad, according to a senior U.S. military intelligence officer there. Presented with a draft of the conclusions, Petraeus succeeded in having the security judgments softened to reflect improvements in recent months, the official said.
In other words, intelligence agencies were poised to paint an even bleaker picture of Iraqi’s security situation, but Petraeus apparently lobbied for wording such as “measurable but uneven improvements.”
I think it might be time to call up a quote from Holly Hunter in Broadcast News.
Paul Moore: It must be nice to always believe you know better, to always think you’re the smartest person in the room.
Jane Craig: No. It’s awful.
My sentiments exactly.
So, yeah, Petraeus, the Pentagon, and the White House are all conspiring to polish the turd that is the Clusterf*&k in Iraq in hopes that the Democrats and everyone else in Washington will swoon and cave in when Petraeus presents his assessment of the war in September. Seriously, is there anyone who actually believes that he’s going to say anything other than, “We’re making real progress in Iraq. We’ve turned a corner. Things are getting better all the time. Now, we’re going to need another fifty billion dollars and if any of you have a problem with that, you’re an Al Qaeda loving traitor who hates our troops and wants to see them slaughtered and humiliated in the field.”?
No wonder the GAO felt like they had to sneak this report out under the radar. The truth about Iraq is too scalding to be openly spoken without inflicting major damage on the administration and all the craven, leg-humping sycophants like Brian Baird and Joe Lieberman who keep insisting that Iraq is just few months, a few thousand more soldiers, and fifty billion dollars away from being a vacation paradise.
What, you’re still not convinced? Well, then clearly you just don’t want to believe. You’ve got Bush Derangement Syndrome and Hate America. You want our troops to lose. Even “anti-war liberals” like Mike O’Hanlon and Ken Pollack agree, things are just fucking peachy in Iraq and all the truck bombs and mountains of dead are wee speed-bumps on the road to Peace, Liberty, and Democracy for the Whole Region. The DoD told them so. It must be true.
Just ignore those veterans and the members of the 82nd Airborne behind the curtain. They don’t know what they’re talking about.

hey!
Rats! So close.
I think it is going to be mid-level worker bees that are going to finally bring this house of cards down. Sad that it has come to the GAO leaking to keep the WH from spinning and BS-ing.
Hey TRex – Broadcast News was on the other night, and I came in on that scene.
Plus, of course, Albert Brooks singing along in French.
Seconding Steve-AR, whassup with William?
It’s all about the spin.
TRex, this is a wonderful post.
I just don’t understand. It hurts to be jerked around like this.
Yes, I do have Bush Derangement Syndrome.
I’m quite proud of my pathology.
In fact, I’d like a button that says “I have BDS — and I want to infect YOU.”
I would wear that proudly this holiday weekend, right next to my “McGovern/Shriver 72″ button.
I’m surprised that the GAO was even able to get anything out about this without it being suppressed!

Funny that I’m just now watching “Iraq for Sale: War Profiteers.”
This war is going to go on until there’s no money left to borrow to pay the defense contractors.
Who knows what they’re going to do then?
But, if we’re smart, instead of having our grandchildren and great-grandchildren pay for this deferred tax, we need to get those ill-gotten profits back from them, by taxing them as they should have been all along, and avoid using taxpayers to subsidize them in the future.
Small factoid. Blackwater’s revenues come almost exclusively from the government, and are now several hundred million a year. In 2001, their income was $775,000… about where it should have been all along.

I’m here, back from work and getting caught up.
Unfortunately, no news about Venus. With the severe coyote problem we have, and the fact that Venus and Mercury are total indoor cats (the very definition of p*ssies) and when they do get out, they’re back within hours, it’s difficult to hold out hope for her return.
I want to tell myself that someone found her, thought she was a stray and fell in love with her. Other people have told stories about their cats coming home after 2 weeks or so, but with a gentle and trusting Burmese, it’s hard to have that kind of optimism.
I appreciate you wonderful pups (and therapods!) caring and sending your prayers and good wishes to someone you only know online. It means more than you can imagine when I’m sitting here trying not to cry too much.

Isn’t antiwar and Republican an oxymoron? Why would you be a Republican if you are antiwar? I have trouble when Senator Reid wants the Republicans to tell him what they are willing to compromise on. How is this different from what he did in the past.

By the way, awfully nice of former U.S. Surgeon General Carmona to come out and ask for an opportunity to testify in front of the Judiciary Committees like that, about the Hatch Act violation that somebody asked him to commit.
Wouldn’t it be interesting to take bets on which rats jump off the HHS ship if Carmona were asked to testify some time soon as to the identity of those “assistant HHS secretaries and top political appointees outside the department” who demanded he serve political rather than public interests?
Oh, and isn’t interesting that Kenneth P. Moritsugu continues to serve as “acting Surgeon General” past what I believe is a 210-day time limit? And that James W. Holsinger was nominated in May of this year by Bush, but has yet to be confirmed?

Internet Could Have Saved Sen. Craig?
from Talking Points Memo: by Joshua Micah Marshall
According to an article in today’s Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune, more avid web readership might have saved Sen. Larry Craig’s (R-ID) career.
As a number of TPM Reader/Google sleuths have been telling us, there are sites out there that rate different public sex bathrooms around the country. One of them sounds sort of like it’s the Zagat’s of gay public restroom sex. And that bathroom at the Minneapolis airport is like the Spago of sex bathrooms.
In any case, this from the Strib reporters …
Another Web site lists Twin Cities-area malls, parks, health clubs and even a “cruisy toilet” at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Many postings list the best times to go and give graphic reviews of the venues.
An airport bathroom, specifically one near a shoeshine stand behind the ticket counter, generated the most comments until Web-site users posted warnings in June that men were getting arrested there. Craig was arrested shortly after noon on June 11 in the main men’s public restroom of the North Star Crossing in the Lindbergh Terminal.
It’s not clear from the article exactly which review web site they’re referring to or whether the warnings about the sting showed up in advance of Craig’s June 11th arrest. But it seems that closer scrutiny of the web and available ratings sites could have kept Craig from his rendezvous with destiny.

petwrecker @182 — fantastic!
Chris Bowers, probably has the situation figured about right.
“The money will almost certainly be appropriated, and another 1.5% of our gross national income will be sent to Iraq. We sent along another 0.7% back in May, and the DoD appropriations bill sent another 3.5% indirectly to Iraq. That makes a running total 5.7% of our gross national income spent on Iraq and the military so far this year. This is simply not sustainable. Among other things, the Soviet Empire’s war in Afghanistan destroyed the Soviet Empire. The longer we keep sending 5-6% of our national income down the Iraq sinkhole, the more likely it becomes for the Iraq war to destroy us. We need to get these votes, but it is a task I am not particularly optimistic about at this time. Another blank check it probably on the way. Perhaps a better strategy is to figure out how, in 2008, to punish those who allowed it to happen, and end the working conservative majority.”

lagniappe
SYLLABICATION: la·gniappe
PRONUNCIATION: ln-yp, lnyp
NOUN: Chiefly Southern Louisiana & Mississippi 1. A small gift presented by a storeowner to a customer with the customer’s purchase. 2. An extra or unexpected gift or benefit. Also called Regional boot2. See Regional Note at beignet.
ETYMOLOGY: Louisiana French, from American Spanish la ñapa, the gift : la, the (from Latin illa, feminine of ille, that, the; see al-1 in Appendix I) ñapa (variant of yapa, gift, from Quechua, from yapay, to give more).
REGIONAL NOTE: Lagniappe derives from New World Spanish la ñapa, “the gift,” and ultimately from Quechua yapay, “to give more.” The word came into the rich Creole dialect mixture of New Orleans and there acquired a French spelling. It is still used in the Gulf states, especially southern Louisiana, to denote a little bonus that a friendly shopkeeper might add to a purchase. By extension, it may mean “an extra or unexpected gift or benefit.”

What I will do is remind you about the CNN exit polling in Florida. CNN asked people who self-identified as having voted for Nader who they would have picked if Nader hadn’t been on the ballot. Those who answered the question favored Gore by better than 5:1. Over 92,000 Floridians voted for Nader.
Do the math — not Karl’s math, the math that the rest of us know and love. No Nader, Gore carries Florida by approximately 80,000 votes.

Yes. We say it. He says it. That doesn’t mean anything in terms of his motives. The Democratic party is in the pockets of the corporate structure. Or the Emanuel faction is. OK, I’m wrong. California Constitution:
CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION
ARTICLE 2 VOTING, INITIATIVE AND REFERENDUM, AND RECALL
SEC. 13. Recall is the power of the electors to remove an elective
officer.
So any officer that’s elected to their position. Which would make them eligible. I would not be in favor of this (I was not in favor of Davis’ recall as much as I detested the man), but yes theoretically such a recall could be initiated. There are some variations in the rules about how many signatures are required to be collected depending on the office, but otherwise the procedure’s the same.
An interesting overview of Davis’ recall: Reflections on the California Recall

I am really frustrated tonight. Mr. Nader is getting the brunt of my ire. After november I thought things would get better. This latest bullshit with Reid and the war is the last straw for me. They are going to let the neocons get away with all that they have done. And they are waiting for their turn to be in power. It has nothing to do with governing this country. It is only about them. Them. Narcissistic them. They are blind to the fact that we disagree, think, breathe, spit, whatever. Look at that Nancy Pelosi with her prissy little mouth, so sweet, so congenial, so compliant. Where are the voices that will speak for this planet? Where are the adults?

it’s always interesting how people misconstrue the lyrics of songs …
Discussing “accountability” for education results in New Orleans yesterday, President Bush reiterated one of his favorite sound bites, “It’s what I call challenging the soft bigotry of low expectations.” Alas, not when it comes to the President himself and certainly not when the subject is the progress in Iraq.
For the details on why the White House wants the GAO to grade Bush’s Iraq surge on a curve, see:

There is actually a possibility it has been “very strange” for a very long time and that it is only now that we’re transitioning to a “normal” time and just now seeing the strangeness, like moving from the shadows into light and noticing how odd the shadows look.
Maybe evil can only be seen in contrast to good and not when experienced by itself.
QuakerGirl @ 109
Hey, what can it hurt to do a little trial ballooning? You want to see if there’s a chance in Hades of stopping funding, this is it.
And, if the Repubs don’t deal, then they’re gonna be in serious do do come election day. The public will not take kindly to lost opportunities or sheer stupidity.
Reid is doing the prudent reasonable thing to offer. It’s up to the few smart Repubs to accept.
It surely would be honest and most accurate to begin describing the Baghdad Green Zone as the capital of Make Believe MagicLand Iraq.
As for the Americans HappyTalk Bush/Cheney WH and its minions(the PNAC gang,AEI,the Kagans,Kristol for starters…) being honest was a very early victim of their reign of error at the WH. Remains a victim. Often.
It is ever so likely Americans will be in Iraq and ME for many years to come and both the DC DEMS and the DC GOPers are agreed to that premise.
Reports come and go as does $50 billion here and another $50 billion there.
The playbill for Iraq is set and the first act which the Bush/Cheney regime wrote will be in some ways tinkered with by the DEMS but surely will remain pretty much as is.
The second act which evidently will begin in Jan.2009 is already being scripted and cast for.
September 2007 is so first act anymore.
September 2011 is where the plot is at.
A hint: Democracy in Iraq proves untenable (that is to say not to Americans liking for lack of control it presents) and a new Iraqi strongman has been mounted. Iran attack really fucked things up in ME and Americans are now getting push back from China and EU. Americans are now in full ME disfavor for not being able to knock Iran over as advertized. Pulling in Israeli troops, armor and air force assets has really backfired for Americans amongst ME Muslim world.
Israels unilateral decision to fully take all of West Bank and integrate into Greater Israel has set off a ME firestorm of unrest and anger.
All Palestinian Arabs being forced to leave and go into Jordan,Syria,Lebanon or Egypt.
Israel is now viewed fully in Arab world as a pariah and outside of international law.
Israel fully declares itself defiant of any attempt to force it to backdown.
The Americans throw full support behind Israel.
The Americans are forced to pull back from Persian Gulf as they are now seen as the real enemy of Muslim world throughout the Gulf and in Saudi Arabia. Egypt breaks off relations with the Americans as does Turkey and Indonesia. Malaysia and Pakistan break all formal contacts with Americans as well.
With three American supercarriers now sunk and four more knocked out beyond repair the myth of American naval/air supremacy has been demolished. Iran is being armed and rearmed via Russian and Chinese channels. Americans can do little about this as they are fully tied down defending Israel as that is only remaining open access point into ME for the Americans.
Sending in three small tactical atomic weapons on two military high value targets raised ME uproar against Americans and Israelis.
Tehran has been nearly leveled. World cultures and heritage preservation groups all in full condemnation of American/Israeli ME reckless air war conduct and destruction.
Refugee populations in ME now unchartable and becoming very real threat to all ME countries.
United Nations has held five votes to stop the Americans and Israelis from further ME war and fighting. Americans have not agreed to any UN moves which restrict full, open ended American or Israeli ME military conduct or actions.
Americans are paying $16 per half gallon of gas and $19 per half gallon of diesel. Limited to one third tank per auto or light truck per week with permit. No permit. No fuel.Fuel tax revenue flows have collapsed. Airline travel? Restricted to extreme need/VIP only. Heavy land haul fully governed by available fuel supply and economic tradeoffs.ME war taxes and rationing systems now fully in place after the early Bush/Cheney reality denials are taken down. There is now an American military draft in place. It is very unpopular as going to ME is seen as likely one way trip alive.
Americans now not allowed/welcomed in many countries around the planet.
Americans seen as warmongers/warcriminals.
September 2007? How could Iraq have been read so wrong?
American attack on Iran? Was incredibly stupid.
How?
Yes.It was stupid.
It was stupidity.
