You know, when you’re a loud, passionate singer, a lot of the time when you’re in the studio, producers and other Wise, Sensible People will tell you that you need to dial it back a notch, knock off the caterwauling, and understand that you don’t necessarily need to scream to catch the audience’s attention.
In fact, it’s kind of considered bad form to pour too much vocal napalm all over a track. You’re not on stage. Back off from the mic. Nobody’s going to come in and try to take it away from you. Relax.
Fortunately, Brandi Carlile didn’t get that memo. Or if she did, she wadded it up and threw it over her shoulder. I have to say that I’m with her. Your debut single might end up being your only chance to have your say before the whole wide world. You might as well body-check the notes and sing like your life depends on it.
Oh, and she brings it on this song. It’s like listening to the romantic musings of an active volcano.
Enjoy.

under 10?
Hey big guy – looks like we hit $750 by the comments.
wow!
A low number.
Suzanne @ 3
Nuh-uh.
Shit.
I’m going to have to do a whole album.
TRex @ 6
Woo-Hoo, Snoopy Dance…!!! *g*
Suzanne @ 3
Now, TRex, think of what you could get in donations if you ran for public office? Hmmm?
Wee, a Trex album! You never know what’ll happen on a Late Nite Thread. :D
TRex @ 6
Hey, what did you expect when you asked the Lake for help? ^_^
TexBetsy @ 2
Confidence, eh??? ;-)
CTuttle @ 11
Well i stopped to read
Dang, that girl’s got some range. E below middle C to the second E above middle C.
I bought her album on a whim, based on 30 seconds of listening in B&N. That was a good whim.
burnspbesq @ 5
OT, but I left you a pizza comment downstairs.
TexBetsy @ 12
So did I, Ma’am, it was short ‘n’ sweet…!!! *g*
TexBetsy @ 12
That’s always a problem, isn’t it? ;-) If you stop to read and actually comment on it, you never even crack single digits…
burnspbesq @ 13
I’m still waiting for my chance to sing this one at the top of my lungs when the neighbors aren’t home. Most sounds don’t go through the walls of this old house, but apparently my singing voice can cut through glass, wood, and stone.
peanutbutter @ 16
…tends to be fatal…!!! ;-)
TRex, both Steve – AR and burns gave $250 each, the rest was smaller donations. I know you can’t access their PP account but if you could let us know when they know the total. I’ve got a hunch there were some silent contributors that didn’t post a comment.
everyone else fall asleep?
TexBetsy @ 20
I’m at work, I’d better not fall asleep.
Valley Girl @ 14
I knew there was a reason I liked you. A kindred spirit!
Vive les poissons de sel!
TexBetsy @ 20
Not yet, but close. I can’t believe I’m nodding so early. Must be the heat.
Suzanne @ 19
Big heroic thanks to everybody, especially burnsy and Steve.
Still hanging in – just wanted to give a listen.
TexBetsy @ 20
No Ma’am, I failed to add; “…like you!!!”, in my prior comment! 8-)
The other day I heard this song in the car when I was in a really low mood, thinking about all the things that went wrong with me and my ex, and when she hit that last, “WHOOA-AAAHLLL of these LINES across my face…”, big fat tears squirted out of my eyes. It took me completely by surprise.
still here, puttering around doing b4 bed tasks. Gosh that girl can SING. Have to add to my “must buy CD” list.
btw, great pizza & coffee, TexB, (no wonder i can’t sleep)
bedtime for betsy, night all
burnspbesq @ 22
And, likewise. Thanks for your generous contribution to the kitteh fund. Big kitteh fan here.
I’m just going to throw this out there to see if anyone can help. With all this hype over that poor borderline retarded pagent girl from South Carolina, I tried find the “recent polls” that found 1/5 of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map, but to no avail. Anyone actually know the source of these polls?
TexBetsy @ 29
Pain Free Sleep, Ma’am!!! 8-)
No shit. I think I love her.
The lady has a great voice. I will have to check out some of her other music.
Darcy Burner..$124,200and the kitties >$750..It’s been a good week.
Some very cool music for a hot night.

welcome to the lake, grs. just so ya know, lots of folks here at the lake have kin that are handicapped, or they themselves are handicapped in one way or the other. ya might wanna rethink that r word in your snark :)

well trex, i luurrrvvv you for introducing me to yet another great singer.

TRex @ 27
Oh, TRex. Sometimes it’s so hard to deal with even when you know the break is the best thing for you. Really enjoyed this clip.
Steve-AR @ 34
Yes it has! Now Trex has to get into the studio and sing his heart out!
Nice stuff. I’m getting exposed to a lot of really nice music through FDL. But I have to respecfully disagree with you on one point, T REX-I think the pop/rock/alternative artist who isn’t overwrought simply doesn’t get noticed.
Suzanne @ 37
No matter her alleged IQ, the way the national media ridiculed that 15(?) year old girl was nauseating. Even KO got into it. If anyone needs to be bashed it’s Tucker and the boys at MSNBC for joking about gay bashing.
grs @ 31
No, but excellent point. What freaking American can’t find the US on a world map?
Is it just me or are Celtic Women the best at controlled breaking their voices.
Loo Hoo. @ 45
No surprise, 50% of Americans are functionally illiterate.
TRex @ 6
OK, I have a request:
Bad to the Bone. ;-)
(I did contribute but it wasn’t very much.)
BC @ 46
Hmmmmm.
Bjork is awesome at it, but she’s a Viking and they mated with Celts back in the day, hence names like mine, Ferguson. Irish name, Saxon suffix.
Hi there Trex and late nite pups:
just woke up to the beeb reporting a cholera outbreak in the north. Good God, what next for those poor souls, this just breaks my heart. Also wanted to mention, after all the speculation yesterday about whether the MSM would pick up the Craig story, it wa reported ad nauseum on BBC last night, I thought that was great.
This may all be old news, been having a med reaction all day and am a litle looped, but just thought I’d mention…
hugs

Looking forward to the return of Petrocelli!
zennurse, yes the teevee news was all Craig, all day long. You didn’t miss a thing.
Hope you’re feeling better now. {{hugs}}
Suzanne @ 51
I’ll second that emotion…!!!
Trex,
Apparently, scientists have just discovered that you’re very very fast

Bummer.
2 firefighters die,
10 hurt in blaze
Two veteran Boston firefighters were killed, and at least 10 others were injured last night as flames rushed through a restaurant in West Roxbury, said two high-ranking public safety officials briefed on the four-alarm fire. The firefighters were identified as
Paul J. Cahill of Scituate and
Warren J. Payne of Canton.
Steve-AR @ 47
Howdja like to be that girl’s social studies teacher and watch that?
Loo Hoo. @ 53
He wrote to my FB account this morn… he’s still in the boonies…!!! :-(
Loo Hoo. @ 53
had an email from Petro today, here’s a direct quote “…tons more hugs & kisses to the Late Nite gang. P.” He misses us!

It has.

What the hell does a world map look like? Mercator projection? Nobody does that any more. A globe? I don’t see those much anymore either. Now that I think of it, I’ve not seen a “world map” in 40 years, and even then it was something of a novelty. Damn Canada looked big and bad.
Loo Hoo. @ 57
Just wonderin’ … if it turned out that the sprinkler system didn’t work right, and a building inspector type had taken a bribe to let it slide, could he/she be charged with felony murder?

Reality:
GAO Draft at Odds With White House
By Karen DeYoung and Thomas E. Ricks
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, August 30, 2007; Page A01
Iraq has failed to meet all but three of 18 congressionally mandated benchmarks for political and military progress, according to a draft of a Government Accountability Office report. The document questions whether some aspects of a more positive assessment by the White House last month adequately reflected the range of views the GAO found within the administration.
The strikingly negative GAO draft, which will be delivered to Congress in final form on Tuesday, comes as the White House prepares to deliver its own new benchmark report in the second week of September, along with congressional testimony from Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker. They are expected to describe significant security improvements and offer at least some promise for political reconciliation in Iraq.
burnspbesq @ 63
depends on the state’s laws and whether or not they have the felony murder rule.
TRex @ 27
Honey, those big fat tears will keep you from getting lines across your face, so let em rip.
But seriously, I know what you mean my “me and my ex” was 12 years ago. For me, for some stupid reason, it’s Todd Rundgren’s “Can we still be friends”

zennurse @ 67
zennurse!
Great finds. Todd has “personality…”
burnspbesq @ 58
Granted, but I’ll maintain that 90% of Americans can locate the US on a world map. This kind of question feeds the whole idea that public education needs to be replaced. No proof, but I agree with grs. Where does that statistic come from?
Awwwwwwww, you guys, what a sweet hello from all of you, thanks so much.
And T-Rex??? Where’s my hug????
(tapping toes……)
I’m waiting…….
OOps, I forgot, your arms are too short.
I’ll settle for an eskimo kiss, then. x
Wow. That first time they brought in the big-chord-power, and she started wailin’ on it, I got goosebumps.
That happens a lot less often than it used to. Don’t know if it’s me being jaded, or the amount of crap the conglomerates shove at me.
I gotta go buy that.
Thanks for that video, too cool.
“pagent girl from South Carolina,”
what’s this about?
wigwam @ 62
It’s the biggest, with the dissolution of the USSR…!!!
Loo Hoo. a>
Here`s the “meat” so to speak :
“…The person who provided the draft report to The Post said it was being conveyed from a government official who feared that its pessimistic conclusions would be watered down in the final version — as some officials have said happened with security judgments in this month’s National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq…” WaPo
Not that we didn`t suspect so anyway but it is nice to know “officially”…

Two more questions:
what are the contributions for?
Who is this in the video?
CTuttle @ 68
Wouldn’t you love to see him up against George Galloway?
zennurse @ 73
Sorry.
Well to go from the sublime to the insipid…
Here’s Senator Larry Craig with pal Paul Schaeffer doing a uet of “Try To Remember” from the Fantastiks
http://craig.senate.gov/clips/try_to_remember.mp3
“Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow.
Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.
…
Try to remember when life was so tender
That dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow.
Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.
Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Cpl Nathan Hubbard’s body arrived home today. He will be laid to rest Friday beside his younger brother who was also killed in Iraq 3 years ago. I wish to God everyone in this country could see how destroyed his family is. Our whole city is grief stricken…. I wish bushco would spontaneously combust with the heat of ten billion hot suns. My heart is soooooooooooooo broken for this family.

Pentagon Hands War Over to Bush:
burnspbesq @ 101
Me neither, however, mine’s since receded…!!!
Loo Hoo. @ 104
I was listening earlier to the Diane Rehm show and these white guys were talking about Iraq and Iran, blablabla and I realized that all we hear about is what WE think we should do about this, we never hear what Iraqis would like to happen. Do they want all military to leave, for most to leave but some to stay to support the police? Rather than have any more of Bush’s democratic votes for an unstable and puppet government, I’d like Iraqi citizens to vote on that. It’s hard to know by reading online and looking at far away newspapers just what the citizens want us to do.
Loo Hoo. @ 104
I have always been against this insane war in Iraq, but the anger and rage that I am feeling after seeing Nathan’s mother and father face to face is overwhelming. How that bastard bush sleeps at night is a mystery to me. He must be a psychopath .
EricTTung @ 52

From above, Gates will be accused of insufficient leadership.
In fact, Bush’s only objective is to postpone the humiliation of acknowledging defeat until he is no longer in office. Then someone else will have to acknowledge it.
Petraeus made a Faustian bargain. The force ratios in his manual indicate that 350,000 to 500,000 troops would be needed to do what is being asked of the surge. In January, Petraeus gave the surge an one-in-four chance of succeeding.
Petraeus can honestly report some “tactical” successes and a complete reversal of strategy, i.e., arming and paying the Sunni insurgents to fight Al-Qaeda (and, of course, the shiite-dominated central government). If you compare the Patraeus “strategy” with http://www.whitehouse.gov/info…..html#part1 you’ll realize that we have been defeated in the sense that our current effort no longer has any chance of achieving its stated goals.
Okay, y’all, I give.
I have now joined Facebook.

YDJ,
It was fantastic. They played for about 2 hours 10 minutes, including just about everything from the current album and almost all of my faves.
I got stuck in the office revising a bunch of docs until almost 8:00, so I didn’t get to see either of the opening acts.
Only way it could have been better would have been if Suzanne had been sitting next to me.
Sleep well dear Teddy.

yellowdog jim @ 135
Dang, YDJ, you still have that relic stored, eh??? ;-)
Hi Trex!
I didn’t find your apology in my in-box – but I understand, and so does Clarice. It is so hard to admit when you are dead wrong that most people do not have the character to do so. We all have our faults… Bill O’, GWB, you… and we tend to hide from them. It’s only human.
It is a genuine disappointment to know that you will not be attending my mother’s birthday party, because we were all looking forward to your encounter with her. However, in lieu of that, I plan to deliver to her your witty repartee regarding her “clown car” of a pu**y “spraying babies like a lawn sprinkler”, and I will capture it on video. Then I plan to post it on YouTube, come back here, and link it, so that you and your sophisticated friends can titter over the hilarity whilst you serve each other photographs of chocolate mousse and creme broulee.
There’s a good chance the video of your “greatest line ever” will go viral, because Mom is one sharp cookie, and I expect her response will be classic – one for the ages (think Dorothy Parker, barefoot).
Toodles!

Suzanne @ 141
This might be the most bicycle-friendly town in Alaska. My host, the City Manager – his late wife was one of Ms. ET’s closest friends – has loaned me one of his bikes. I’ve put in about 30 miles on it. At least. Some in the rain today, but mostly in the sun. Very warm for this late in the summer. Meeting and working with some incredibly talented musicians. Asking the local folks a lot of questions about how they feel about Don Young…

My favorite version of “Fall at Your Feet” is actually the one that’s on Neil’s “Sessions at West 54th” DVD. Just one acoustic guitar and a very simple piano part played by Mark Hart.

Ah, Brandi is great. I used to see her at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard, and last heard her perform at the Woodland Park Zoo.
What’s great about this recording is that it manages to capture a little of what she’s like live — she constantly pushes and pushes, and it’s always raw and real. A great performer, and not a bad songwriter either.

And, if as seems a real prospect, those two are nominated by President Bush to hold those positions in their own right, controversy almost surely would accompany them to the U.S. Senate but both, in the end, would probably be confirmed.”
Sweet dreams Suz and I’m calling it a night too.
Have fun you intrepid late late niters. A great pleasure as always.
G’nite CTuttle!
Hi npb – saw your question just as I was logging off. Fortunately (brrr) I’ve no direct knowledge, but…
Wausau (I can spell it ’cause of the old ad. Who said TV isn’t educatshunl?) is in the Green Bay NWS forecast office zone.
And Wausau even shows up on their nifty map! Woo-hoo!
The Wausau forecast?
Somewhere on their site, the NWS will avg regional weather info by month, but damned if I can find it.
Fortunately, they have a listed phone number. Woo-hoo!
(hope this helps).

Good morning pups!
yoo hoo
Good morning. But I haven’t been to bed, yet.
Good morning, pups. In the NYT today TOMC has produced a thing called “Men’s Room Chronicles.” Roger Cohen says that the Bush administration’s refusal to get serious about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a source of global frustration.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got blueberry muffins for you today. It’s almost Friday! Have a good day.
Ok folks if you could live anywhere in the continental US, where and why. [Sorry ETeller!]
Brandi Carlile with a morning cup of tea… a big THANKS TreX
egregious @ 211
Don’t care which state, but it would be on the beach. Where I’d sip my morning coffee and gaze at the ocean.

Workin on it. North Carolina by universities mountains and ocean; lake country in upper midwest; west coast with aforementioned universities/mountains; on a river somewhere green and beautiful. Not too sticky hot. Cold is ok, I’ve lived in upstate NY and so Mich/Chicago/Minn/Canada* would be ok. Well that certainly narrows it down.!
*strictly speaking, not yet part of the continental US
Egregious – I’ve been all over the US on business and frankly, I’d rather live right where I am right now (and have spent most of my life in), which is Upstate New York. Gorgeous scenery, four distinct seasons (no I do not mind shoveling snow – snow you can shovel, hurricanes and tornadoes are sort of tough to shovel and we get few of those up here), the summers are not too hot, and frankly, because our economy sort of went through a bad spot starting about 20 years ago, we don’t have as much sprawl as a lot of other places do. My commute to work takes all of about 12 min. Plus, there is quite a lot of diversity of people, culture and opinions up here, so progressives are not made to feel like pinheads.
egregious @ 218
Good choice……..we need all the progressive we can get. *g* Only problem with the mountain/ocean thing is there’s an awful lotta miles between the two (having just driven it this week). ‘Course, if you choose mid-state, it’s not too far to either.
And here I thought you were talking about John Ashcroft. Silly me.
Good morning. If money were no object I’d probably pick Highlands, NC. It’s close enough to major cities and the scenery is magical.
egregious @ 211
On the coast of NH watching the tide come and go. Seeing a vast array of sea birds, smelling the ocean and feeling the sea breezes. Not far from the culture in Boston not far from the mountains of NH not far from Canada. Space for an organic garden, enough to grow most of our veggies. Fruit trees. Nice comfy deck.
Well that is where I am now! I think I will stay.
Good Morning!
gee, egregious, do we have to pick one spot?

O, I C !
I have to dissent on this one. For someone who has the voice, singing like this is easy. What’s hard is knowing when to cut loose and when to pull it back. Carlile goes on my list of female singers who should be locked in a room with a stack of Eva Cassidy cd’s and forced to listen to them until she understands the difference.

I used to live in the rolling hills of southern Indiana and loved it. But nothing was convenient.
Northern Indiana, where I am now is nice, but there’s not much scenery unless you live on a lake.
Getting out of the Hoosier state I think I would like the mountains of New Mexico or possibly Vermont.
I absolutely LOVE Nova Scotia, but I guess that’s not in the U.S., let alone the continental U.S.
I just stumbled across this from yesterday’s Boston Globe:

With a voice like that, this won’t be her only hit. Wow!
I love it, thanks.

Back on topic, doesn’t anyone else find the actual hook of this song just a tad weaker than the rest of it? “I was made for you” is not exactly the cleverest line shouted in the last ten years, either.
I think she’s powerful, but has some distance to go in the vocal-control department. Some good lyrics otherwise, though.
