Hillary declared a War On Cancer.

Why does everything have to be a war?

As with most of her policies it’s a little late. Haven’t we been at war with cancer for about 3 decades (at least)?

The L.A. Times did almost exactly the same thing in its edition today. Geez, mediocre minds actually do think alike.

Just shoot me. Twice.

As part of its extensive, multi-story coverage of the Alberto Gonzales resignation, the New York Times devotes two of its three front page articles to essentially excusing Gonzales’ abysmal tenure as Attorney General or claiming that his departure now absolves the White House of wrong doing. And in the process, the Times editors send the subtle message that it’s okay to sanction felonies and war crimes if it is done to promote war or protect the President.
=====

Seriously, what did you expect from the NYT?

I expect them to be good journalists, and I don’t believe in letting them off the hook.

What are you talking about? The Paper of Record? They OWN the hook.

More “progress”, Bush style.

AP - A devout Muslim with a background in political Islam won the Turkish presidency on Tuesday, in a major triumph for the Islamic-rooted government after months of confrontation with the secular establishment.

Actually, to many of those of us who live here, this does look like progress, of a sort. For ’secular establishment’ read ‘the kind of guys who call for a military coup when the wrong guy looks likely to be elected president’.

‘Secularism’ Turkish style is something that I’m prepared to guess wouldn’t be very attractive to any mainstream liberal/progressive in the US. It entails (eg) a complete ban on the use of any kind of religious symbolism in the public sphere. So for example, someone that covers their hair for religious reasons cannot (while covering) study at university, be a member of parliament, argue a case in court or be a state employee…

LiberalTrain at 129 — As this isn’t my thread, I’m not certain why you are bothering Scarecrow with your criticism of me. But I will say this: when I do a brief, snarky piece, I get e-mails complaining that people want more in-depth analysis. When I do a longer analysis, other people complain that they want something shorter. Can’t please everyone all the time, but I do try and mix it up. And I’d appreciate it if you have a complaint about my work, that you do so to me, and not to some other writer on the site who has no control over what I do. Thanks.

Sorry, much as I love Firedoglake, I don’t read Hardin-Smith either. Brevity is not her forte, and if you wade through pages of information to get to the nugget buried within, well, sorry, I have a short attention span. There is, after all, a reason why pleadings have page limits. I appreciate she charges forth, and that she is on CSPAN. Great, but really, if she can work on being both clear and brief, I would appreciate it, and I would read her more often.

That Minneapolis-St Paul airport bathroom where Repug Senator Craig was caught soliciting sex from the undercover officer is widely known in the airport as a famous gay tryst space. (Please don’t ask me how I know this…*g*)

What do the hand swipe gestures mean?

JimBob @ 115

Excuse me, but it is an attorney’s job to tell his/her client when they’re crossing the line and to stop. And that’s really important when your client is the President of the United States, because when the President crosses the line into illegality, he can get the country into serious trouble and cause lots of damage.

Sorry, but this is exactly WRONG.

It is also exactly what the Bushies got wrong. You are describing the White House cousels job. that was Gonzo’s responsibility before he became AG. As AG his duty should have been to sue the white house’s ass if they were crossing over the line or at lest to recuse himself from enforcing the law against policies he had implemented and appoint an independent counsel.

If that distinction isn’t absolutely clear to Gonzo’s critics, we’ll never break through the idiocy of the NYTimes and other enablers.

JimBob: I believe those opinions were expressed by Gonzales before he was AG, when he really was WH counsel. Again, this is more reason why Gonzales was a terrible choice for AG. While WHC, he clearly lobbied that the President should be allowed to commit war crimes. That should have disqualified him from the AG job outright. It is abundantly clear that he did not change his job function, except in title, when he took the AG position.
