Larry Craig is defiant. And he's NOT GAY. He didn't do anything wrong. His only lapse in judgment? Pleading guilty, which he did because of all the pressure he was under, and by the way, he's NOT GAY:
For a moment, I want to put my state of mind in the context on June 11. For eight months leading up to June 11 my family and I have been relentlessly and viciously harassed by the Idaho Statesman. If you saw the article today you know why. Let me be clear. I am NOT GAY, I never have been gay. Still without a shred of truth or evidence to the contrary, the Stateman has engaged in this witch hunt. In pleading guilty I overreacted in Minneapolis because of the stress the Idaho Statesman investigation and the rumors it has fueled all around Idaho. That overreaction was a mistake and I apologize for my judgment. Furthermore I should not have kept this arrest to myself, and I should have told my family and my friends about it. I wasn't eager to share this failure, but I should have anyway, because I am NOT GAY.
Yeah if I was a sitting US Senator that's the first thing I'd do if I was being harassed for something I wasn't, namely being GAY, which he's NOT -- plead guilty. Makes perfect sense.
Rumors have been circulating that Wide Stance Larry has got a stubborn streak that will make make it hard for the GOP to get him off the stage. Lord knows the wingnuts are doing their best, and Glenn Greenwald has a nice rundown of how the very same people who were horrified about Mike Rogers' initial investigation last fall are now calling for Craig's ouster. I personally think Larry owes it to himself, his family and the state of Idaho to stay in office, run again in '08 and prove that he is NOT GAY. Because lordy, otherwise you just know people are going to talk.
Update: Crooks & Liars has the video. And Joe Sudbay says, "The closet is a nasty, sad, disturbing place."

Okay then.
What the hell? Am I first?
Hi Jane
Oh yes he is.
That never happens. There’s been some sort of dreadful screw-up.
Oh, and senator…yes you are.
oh, but ya are gay, Blanche!
Ah, hell, do we have to repeat it over and over for the goopers: “it’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up.”
And denial is once again more than just a river.
Just because a person plays footsies with another person in the next stall in a public restroom, while reaching into that stall with his groping fingers, doesn’t mean he’s gay.
This is one of the silliest fuckin story I’ve heard lately..There were two months between his arrest and the hearing where he pled guilty. He says that he should have talked to a lawyer—well there’s a thought- he had two months to do it. Too cheap?
If it walks lika, sounds lika, acts lika, it’sa (GOP)
A mean newspaper made me plead guilty more than a month after my arrest in a men’s airport bathroom. Mmmmmmhmmmmm. A judge is totally gonna buy that one…
But he’s NOT GAY. And that’s the important thing.
That awful newspaper drove me to same-sex fellatio! I’m not gay! I’m persecuted! By that dang newspaper! The newspaper is gay! Not me!
There’s a lot of gay men who say they aren’t gay and they say that in between giving blow jobs to other men.
Oddly Craig doesn’t seem to appreciate that the issue in not his sexual preference. It’s the fact he was caught in a public bathroom attempting to solicit sex. Which incidentally, Mr. Craig, is a crime.
Stick a fork in Craig. He’s done.
Mrs. Garrison was the undercover cop????
Christy Hardin Smith @ 10
Yes Christy, I think you have isolated the most salient fact. He is NOT GAY. The rest of it is just details.
I just assume all GOP senators are gay. That way I’m not surprised when one of them approaches me in a public restroom.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 13
and I’m glad it is, there’s nothing more unnerving than having to send a young boy into the men’s room while I have to wait outside.
Blah blah blah not gay blah blah.
Millineryman @ 12
Yep, so much so that the standard question on health screenings asks about sexual contact with other men, not orientation. Sadly, I doubt he’d be willing to answer that question.
Hi Cleter. New tradition at the Lake I heard. You as the Zed person are supposed to come down and get the kids in the basement! :-)
I believe him when he says he is not gay. I hope he isn’t gay. I surmise from the children that he is bisexual at most and probably only has a fetish for “nasty bad boy behavior” it just happens that most of the people in the public toilets where he goes to have sex happen to be men,, but that might not be his choice based on desire but instead on expediency.
“I am NOT a crook!”
“I am NOT gay!”
Now, I’m waiting for “Ah’m NOT a carpetbaggin’ moron with a vicious, mean streak!”
Christy Hardin Smith @ 10
EPU’d, but right on target . . .
I was out running errands, flipping through radio stations (still haven’t figured them out yet since moving), when I heard Craig start his press conference. Heard the first couple of minutes, then ran into the grocery store to get some stuff for dinner. When I came out, I caught the very end, and then heard the dulcet tones of Sean Hannity.
He had cut away from his radio show to catch the presser, and afterwards he gave more context by reading much of the Idaho newspaper article to his audience. I ran into another store, to pick up some other stuff, and came back as Sean was talking with a cop about anonymous sex at rest stops and such. Sean seemed genuinely surprised at whole thing. He cut to commercial, and then came back right before the top of the hour to close things out by saying essentially “I’m sorry, Senator. . . You say it is a misunderstanding, a plot, etc. but there’s something here that just doesn’t fit. Sorry, Senator.”
It’s a good thing I was stopped at a stoplight, or I’d have run off the road.
If Hannity’s not buying it, neither will the judge.
damn. can’t get the renactment utube on crooks&liars to play. Pictures worth a thousand words and all that.
Taboo in society leads to repression due to fear. Fear of being ostracized from society leads to suppression of who you are. Fear of exposure to who you are leads to social contraction of yourself and sometimes domination of others. It is really sad.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 13
Oh, but he already explained that his touching another guy’s foot and reaching under the stall partition was just misunderstood, so he wasn’t really doing what he pleaded guilty to. (And he’s NOT GAY, either.)
Didn’t Lyndon Johnson have something to say about making the poor bastard deny it?
Whether or not it was true.
Steve Talbert @ 22
I may be wrong but I think those kids are hers, not his.
I still don’t get the wide stance.
I’ve been practicng today different stances. And wasn’t this in a stall, like where you sit down?
I think I’d like to see a picture of the crime scene, I mean, were there gloryholes in the stall or was it just the teenie, narrow space between the door and the wall that ws supposed to suffice?
I’m having trouble visualizing the whole thing.
Well, not the whole thing
New song.. Gay Boise
Come on. If I did a wide stance tippy toe in the ladies room at the airport and I was told I was under arrest, the last thing I would do would be to admit my guilt, if I WAS NOT gay.
I swear, the only thing really, really, really pissing off the neocons is because of his wide stance on the Imigration Bill.
Whatever he is, he’s not honest and that’s not a qualification for people who hold elected office.
ooh he’s gay
james @ 30
It’s an anal retentive thing….
Steve Talbert @ 22
I always thought that’s why god gave me hands.
And notice how bothered he was by the train station investigation that was never published.
What’s behind the right’s different response to David Vitter’s call girls and Larry Craig’s boy trouble? In a nutshell, the boys.
As the old expression goes, you are what you eat. And that imagery, apparently, is behind the growing conservative chorus calling for Craig’s resignation.
For the details, see:
“Behind the Right’s Double Standard on Craig and Vitter.”
The Truth Hurts @ 14
perris @ 173 (previous thread)
it’s cur-tains for Craig
Question folks - is the issue that Craig allegedly solicited sex — or that he solicited sex and money was involved? The last time I looked, sex between consenting adults is legal (or in the state of Minnesota, do we have something different?), but it’s the issue of sex for money that is where things go off the rails. Or, am I off here?
I am however pansexual
rwcole @ 8
Not too cheap. Because he is gay.
You know it is sad that people still feel that have to remain hidden, in the closet. At this point though, this guy has got to see that it’s not his sexual orientation, but all the lies about it that look really bad.
I think Senator Craig is being maligned.
I think he deserves a leadership award.
What a pack of pathetic men.
Look at this list.
Mayor Jim West.
Congressman Ed Schrock.
Congressman Mark Foley.
Pastor Ted Haggard.
State Sen. Bob Allen.
Indiana GOoP-er Glenn Murphy.
Whitehouse guest Jeff Gannon.
Sen. Larry Graig.
GOP man of the hour, Cpl. Matt Sanchez.
-GSD
This AM the GF got to the blogs before I did..”Craig resigned” I felt ill..he and Gonzo were the best thing that we had going…fortunately it was only from the Rommney Campaign.
Elliott @ 29
I may be wrong but I think those kids are hers, not his.
OOO. He MIGHT be gay, then.. But I think it is wrong to make people choose, since it isn’t a choice as if since he can’t seem to choose for himself then WE will choose for him. He has sex with guys.. who really cares if he is gay or not?
Steve Talbert @ 22
Actually, the children are apparently his wife’s from a previous marriage, not his.
The newspaper made do it.
The personals made me do it.
Sen. Craig said that he maintains a wide stance when teeing up to the glory hole.
OK. He didn’t say that.
-GSD
Steve Talbert @ 45
Many of his manly men and women constituents….
I don’t buy that. Why is he going to public toilets to have sex? He is married, right? So, family values? What happened to those?
Toby Wollin @ 40
You’re off. Sex in a public place is Lewd Conduct legally in most places
it’s not the gay; it’s the hypocrisy
I’ve never been to the Minneapolis airport. Are it’s men’s rooms especially romantic?
Toby Wollin @ 40
Most jurisdictions have a real problem with sex in public whether it’s man/woman, woman/woman/ santorum man/dog/ man/man, whatever.
I don’t think there was even a mention of money as in soicitation. The charge was disorderly conduct which is nuisance behavior.
Steve Talbert @ 45
you’re right, it’s the HYPOCRISY, in his job. And at home, imagine if his wife had no idea he was gay and thought she was marrying someone who wanted her? That’s a really crummy thing to do to someone else, don’t you think?
OK got the video at c&l to work-this is two news guys acting out what happened- if you are confused at all, chk it out.
And James-
you crack me up-thanks!
GSD @ 43
David Vitter
Ok, OK, Ok, he’s NOT Gay, we hear ya Senator … but, are you witty and pretty?
And as for that “wide stance”, a commenter over at TBogg had the quote of the day … “Not just a wide stance, but with one hand on the floor. Like a linebacker.”
These frequent episodes involving Republican leaders, congressmen, Senators and staffers really does lead one to believe that if you hear a male Republican backing legislation that in any way demonizes gays and lesbians, you can then surmise said male Republican is gay, gayer than Nathan Lane on Gay Pride day, gayer than Reverend Haggard after … well, you get the idea.
Once we clear all that up, we can turn to our now former Republican man, give him a hug and a kiss and welcome him back into humanity.
Elliott @ 18
Elliott - I’m shocked!
Hanging out with a young boy near the public restrooms seems a bit dodgy in any case, don’t you think?
/s
Of course he’s not gay. As Roy Cohn said in Angels in America, gays are those people who march and struggle for equal rights.
Scene: US Senate “Members Only” Mens Room.
Enter SENATOR CRAIG, looking for an empty stall. Door one is closed, with two feet showing beneath the door, and the same is true of door three. Craig opens door two, enters, and closes the door behind him.
Immediately, the feet behind doors one and three start tapping.
CRAIG (wailing): “Oh, c’mon! Give it a rest!”
CRAIG throws open the door, and runs out.
Door one opens to reveal SENATOR MITCH MCCONNELL, and door three opens to reveal SENATOR LINDSEY GRAHAM. Both are laughing hysterically.
What paper did he drop? Craig’s List?
Redshift @ 46
And I think they are living in Chicago..I think he married her about six months after he nearly got burned in the 1980’s page sex broo-haha.
OT - has anyone commented yet on the crawl I just saw on MSNBC?
“Inauguration Day 2009 Countdown: 511 Days”.
Oh great - Chris Hitchens vs. Bill Donahue on Hardballs - this could get good…
well im off to do some community action work back later - be swell fellow pups
kirk murphy @ 59
KIRK!
The Republican Party is now suffering the fruits of 30 years of demonizing gays and homosexuality.
They are collapsing under their own moral rot.
They have spent years pointing at motes.
I can’t tell you how many years of Barney Frank jokes I have heard from GOoPers.
They deserve every rotten epithet thrown at them for the misery and mean spiritedness they have brought into America.
-GSD
Hi Jane!
That poor, sad, man. I almost feel sorry for him. No, that’s not right. Part of me DOES feel sorry for him because he hates himself so much.
But then I think about what he and men like him have done to our nation over the past quarter century and I lose all sympathy for him. He is a hater. Just because he hates himself most of all doesn’t excuse his hatred, fear, and small-mindedness.
carolyn urban @ 50
he’s having sex in the toilets over there so they won’t come home and do it here.
or something like that.
Sharkbabe @ 60
Sure, like not being an alcoholic because those are the ones who go to meetings, right?
kirk murphy @ 48
The newspaper that didn’t print the story made me do it cause now I knew they’d print the story.. Great logic.
So, if a guy is an anti-gay Republican, getting sex on the ‘down low’ is neither ‘gay’ nor hypocritical. Craig makes everyone see that closets are nasty places to stay.
Reminds me of Max Blumenthal’s visit to the College Republican Convention. The Young Republican with 3:07 to go in the video gives a very convincing account of why he is not gay.
I’m not gay, either. I’ve just been heterosexually-challenged all my life.
Did Wolf Blitzer really just say they’ll be analyzing the “psychology of split personalities” because that’s what some people are saying about Larry Craig?
Because what, it’s not possible that he might, you know, lie?
The following is a pretty interesting conversation at The Next Hurrah between me and one of the real treasures at TNH, Sara. Sara is a local in Minneapolis where the Craig incident occurred and was prosecuted:
Yea, I am sure Larry Craig had some local legal advice from someone in the Republican Bar — probably on a pro-bono basis so as to not make a financial record, but it takes time for Republican secrets to flow into DFL gossip, so we’ll just have to wait and see if the gossip crosses the aisle. But the Arrest was in June, and the court appearance in August — so there was plenty of time for Craig to get some behind the scenes consultation. Where I would look would be at Norm Coleman. Remember his now late father was caught in broad daylight getting it on with a prostitute in a car parked in a restaurant parking lot a few years back. I would imagine Coleman could have made a referral to a lawyer in the Republican mix who deals with such matters.
That particular restroom has been a spot known all over the country for quickie BJ’s for years. When they first put security in place after 9/11 it rather cramped the business. It was a place where young Johns could pick up some quick money when in need — but after security went up, they had to get jobs at the Airport in order to do any business — and the decision to set up a sting operation apparently had something to do with some sort of security issues. Anyhow Amy’s old office and the Airport Cops have pulled in lots of fine money over the last few years with the sting. People who are just changing planes really don’t necessarily know that what used to be a tolerated BJ spot no longer is precisely that. You would also think a US Senator would know that Airport Security is what it is these days. To get a safe BJ, one would need to leave a heavily secured area, and look for, for instance, one of our Dirty Book Stores. There are not many stings set up in those premises. We even have a nice new Light Rail at the airport that can quickly move a customer over to the Mall of America where such services are available.
Nonetheless, the implications of Airport Security are quite profound.

Boo, yer totally right, Thanks so much for your analysis Sara, the post is August 24, Time For Serious Talk On Iraq

Praedor you need to read the comments from that post if you haven’t done so already. Yer a touch outta line.

Sara - Just read your above immediately after watching Craig on the TeeVee explain how straight, pure, and mad at not having had consulted counsel he is. What you just said, plus my hunch about him really having had counsel of some sort, is pretty powerful circumstantial evidence. And for those of you out there reading this that say “Oh, its all circumstantial evidence”; please be advised that by far the vast majority of criminal convictions occurring in the United States come from circumstantial evidence. Bye bye Senator Craig.

Elliott @ 66
sorry - couldn’t resist - and for the record, my snarky comment was invented out of whole cloth
(not a cheap one-ply from the airport bathroom floor…
aka an Idaho keepsake)
Donahue already challenging Hitchens to “take it outside”. heh.
In case I was misunderstood. I think having sex or trying to have sex in a public toilet is disgusting…. it isn’t about if he is gay or not or a hypocrit or not. I think by focusing on the ‘gay’ part AND/OR the hypocrasy of his political stance - however wide or narrow - it makes it seem as if all gays have (or want to) have sex in public toilets… which is DEFINITELY NOT the case.
Elliott @ 66
I think I am missing something..I thought Elliot was talking about her son.
Heard on the net: Brokeback Bathroom
Jane Hamsher @ 75
Oh, like schizophrenics don’t have enough low self-esteem when they aren’t on their meds, now we’re gonna equate them with a self-hating man who likes an occasional c*ck in his mouth every now and them?
For some on the far right side of The Closet, there’s a blindness about gay sexuality that says “If it’s the other guy’s lips on me, then he’s gay but I’m not.”
Right.
Jane Hamsher @ 75
Typical Wolf….“some people are saying”
The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
sangemon @ 68
Nah, this is about keeping his job and staying in power. His party spent decades beating up on gays and he helped them do it, not because he hates himself, but because he was ambitious.
He apparently does not believe getting a blow job from the same sex equates to him being gay. God it’s just a blow job it’s not sex.
As with anything else these perverted repugs deny, blame others, and lie their asses off when caught.
And this creep makes laws for the rest of society!
OOPs, this was the first part of the conversation that, for some reason did not copy with the latter portion above:
You can’t fly west of here on a direct flight except to Portland and Seattle, so this is the a place for making plane changes if your destination is N&S Dakota, Montana, and Idaho, Utah, and a few other places. If you want to go to London or Hong Kong from those places, well welcome to Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport. We offer many services, including this small off the beaten track restroom for horney men. My own legislator wants to put a Casino in that waiting area to capture a little wagering money.
I just want to note something of interest. The former Hennepin County Prosecutor, who till last January would have dealt with this matter, is now Senator Amy Klobuchar. One wonders how they eye each other in the Senate Chamber. I think she set up the sting some months before she became a Senator.
Posted by: Sara | August 28, 2007 at 00:53
Sara - That last paragraph is absolutely rich. Is there any indication that state and/or local officials (Repub I would presume) worked with Craig to keep this quiet. I don’t know if you have seen this part yet, but he is now saying he was innocent and only pled guilty because he didn’t have an attorney; made a stupid mistake in pleading guilty and really regrets that he didn’t have a lawyer to help him.
There is not one chance in hell that he did this without the advice of an attorney. Just because they tried to slide it through a municipal or minor justice court of some kind without drawing attention to it and there was no counsel of record on the plea DOES NOT mean he did not consult an attorney. Take it to the bank that he consulted an attorney. This guy is not only a pervert, but like most far right wingnut Republicans, he is a complete lying sack of dung. I will wager about anything that he consulted a lawyer either there, back home in Idaho or DC. Any scuttlebutt on him talking to a lawyer or getting help keeping this under the radar from the locals?
Posted by: bmaz | August 28, 2007 at 01:21
Imagine how horribly sad it is to be Mr. Craig. This rigid culture we inhabit creates monsters out of scared, ordinary people. How can a person repress his/her basic nature without going kattywampus.
jayt @ 64
The drunk and the compulsive gambler?
Please tell me they’ll be debating Craig’s sexual ethics…
Please…
I’ll waggle my foot…
We had a similar sting operation a few years back at a park shelter near a bike trail. The local Sheriffs office nabbed about 10 or 12 mostly middle aged married men. Most all of them actually claimed to not be Gay. Even after their homesexual acts were caught on tape. This must be what Sen. Craig means when he says he is not Gay.
punaise @ 54
Thanks Pun, it’s an important point.
It’s not teh gay.
Good Lord! Of course, he’s not gay.
He’s bi.

Thanks Cozumel and James - the Lewd Conduct thing completely missed me. Getting a charge of disorderly conduct was sort of a gift, really, but the whole issue for me is the level of hypocritical and delusional thinking that is going on in his head — Huh? I’m not gay? He thinks the issue is that someone might think he’s gay? the fact that a US Senator behaved in a way that a cop could snag him in this way in the public restroom in an airport doesn’t lead him to believe that he’s shown incredibly poor judgement? And he thinks that his major problem is his guilty plea? I’m not a resident of Idaho, but if I were, my issue would be that I would not want to be represented by someone who theoretically is an adult who shows this level of bad decision making. If someone can’t even protect themselves on the personal level (i.e., keeping his personal life truly private and personal by making choices that keep it that way instead of making choices that could make his personal preferences a matter of public comment and a humiliation for his family), how could I trust that person to make reasonable choices and decisions about policies that I consider really important to the country? The answer is, I could not trust that individual. At all.
clio @ 93
Don’t you mean bye-bye?
Michael @ 87
Ahhh, just a bl*w job.
But when Clinton did it it was a high crime and/or misdemeanor….oh, wait, that was the lying, or the cover-up, or the hypocricy, or the unfaithfulness to his wife, or the
blowembarrassment to his family.I’m sure Criag was on-board for the impeachment, wasn’t he?
Just shows he’s an idiot. He should never, ever say the word gay out loud if he is gonna survive this.

Who was asking why the Alberto Gonzales story broke on a Monday?
:D
BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. troops raided a Baghdad hotel Tuesday night and detained about 10 people. A U.S.-funded radio station said the group included six members of an Iranian delegation here to negotiate contacts with the Iraqis.
Gunga Djinn @ 115
Too bad they didn’t take that trip together along with Brad from DoJ.
I just read the police report. What lewd thing did he do? I don’t see anything in that report at all that proves he did anything sexual. There was no solicitation of sex verbally by anyone. There was no exposure of genitals. There was no offer of money. Nothing. According to the police person, he basically ordered Craig to follow him and they booked him.
He had left his bag with identification outside of the interview room, so he pulled out a card that he had on him and said, “What do you think of that”. Maybe he meant…is this ok for I.D., but then the police officer asks to see his driver’s license rather than just ask for identification. What if he didn’t have a driver’s license? He was in a bathroom, not in a car.
I think this is very weak. The fact that he pleaded guilty is the only weird thing.
Gotta love the people at CREW
CREW FILES SENATE ETHICS COMPLAINT AGAINST SENATOR CRAIG
8 Aug 2007 // Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint with the Senate ethics committee against Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) asking for an investigation into whether the senator violated the Senate Rules of Conduct by engaging in disorderly conduct.
He’s not gay, but his penis is.
Gunga Djinn @ 115
Who was asking why the Alberto Gonzales story broke on a Monday?
:D
Alberto Who?
LS @ 118
Howie Klein adds additional info to the “Craig affair”
And I’ll add something to that: The policeman they used was total gay bait. Although that Florida Republican who offered to pay a plainclothes policeman $20 for the pleasure of performing fellatio on him later claimed the cop was fat and unattractive, no one will be saying that about Officer Dave Karsnia, who wouldn’t get out of any gay bar in the country without being showered with drinks and marriage proposals.

LS @ 119
Well, if you are in an airport chances are you have identification on you.

My bad, natch.
raven @ 123
What!? Tell me what he did based upon the report.
LS @ 117
The solicitation was non-verbal — peering into the cop’s stall repeatedly, setting down his bag to prevent detection, using known signals to indicate his intentions, etc.
The only weird thing to me is that he thinks he can retract his guilty plea with a presser like this.
LS @ 120
One usually has ID/DL by the time they get into an airport bathroom these days.
Alberto Who?
Yeah, that Alberto.

The big blow-up is coming. The US is playing some seriously dangerous games in Iraq. Stepping away from the main government, supporting the old Saddam wing again.
The US is also convinced that they can “shock and awe” Iran into submission in a few days.
The US is sorely mistaken. The beginning of the end is near.
-GSD
james @ 112
“we are fam-i-ly…”
1. Someone should suggest to him that he try to withdraw his plea. I would laugh my ass off if the D.A. non-opposed the motion.
2. Someone else should get a tape of the change-or-plea hearing. It is significant that he plead guilty and not no contest (nolo contendre.) A guilty plea is an admission of guilt.
3. Hopefully he will leave the U.S. Senate involuntarily and secure employment as the national spokesman for Requip.
ccmask @ 125
They specifically asked for a “driver’s license” not just provide a form of identification. You are not required to carry a driver’s license unless you are driving.
TRex @ 122
ROTFLMAO!!!!
Send for Rev. Haggard to help cure that!
LS @ 119
It appears to me that the locals in Minneapolis charged him with the wrong crime. They should have charged him with solicitation of lewd and lascivious conduct. In fairness, they may have, and the press just mis-reported it; the press is horrid on understanding legal cases. A decent prosecutor could certainly get a conviction on solicitation. Craig apparently thought he had a problem. so to speak.

I’m with Elliott on this one. I’m nervous when my son goes into the mens room and I stand outside the door. I would like to think this kind of behavior in a public place where there are minors present isn’t legal. I hate to be a prude but when it comes to my kids I put my foot down. (pun not intended)

The United States demanded Tuesday that Iran end any support for extremists in Iraq “at once” and raised the specter of a “nuclear holocaust” in the Middle East if Tehran gets atomic weapons.
US President George W. Bush branded the Islamic Republic “the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism,” citing its backing of Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Shiite fighters killing US troops in Iraq.
“And Iran’s active pursuit of technology that could lead to nuclear weapons threatens to put a region already known for instability and violence under the shadow of a nuclear holocaust,” he told the American Legion veterans group.

Hanging around in a public restroom, peering through the doors to the stalls at another person using the facilities, encroaching on someone else’s space, so to speak, while not using the facilities for their intended purposes could be construed as disorderly conduct in a public place…the key words here are public place. The law has the right to designate certain behaviors prohibited in public spaces.
The ID thing is different in each jurisdiction. In NYC, for example, during the Giuliani/Bratton reign of terror ordinances were passed and added to the Administrative Code that made it very difficult, if not impossible, for someone to be released if they were picked up during a sweep and didn’t have government-issued ID such as a non-driver’s ID card, passport, or other recognized form of ID. A business card with someone’s name on it wouldn’t have cut it if I was authorizing the release.
He was trying in a subtle way to feel out the chances of getting away without being arrested. His docile behavior indicates to me that he didn’t want this to become a big magilla and he just hoped it would be covered up.
He did it, he pled to it, let the chips fall where they may and let’s let the GOP come up with the mitigating circumstances for this piece of shit.

I know, I know. I just think you have to have done “something” lewd before you are charged with something in the first place…before you have to decide whether to just plea or fight it.
LS @ 119
The guilty plea isn’t “the only weird thing”. It’s the icing on the cake.
The man was trolling for sex in a public restroom. If it had gone to trial, I think most people would have said, “Well, it sounds like he was trolling for sex in a public restroom, but he didn’t actually do anything overtly sexual, so I’m going to give him ‘reasonable doubt’ and let him off.” But Craig didn’t want the publicity of a trial, probably because he knew that (a) he’d look really guilty, even if he beat the charge, and (b) he’s been accused of trolling for sex in public restrooms before. So he copped to a lesser plea in the hopes that the media would never find out about this. And for a few weeks, they didn’t. Now he’s stuck trying to defend himself against a charge that he’s already plead guilty to. And he just blew his Jim McGreevey moment with that awful press conference.

EvilDrPuma @ 167
I AM gay, and the fact that he’s adamant that he’s NOT GAY is the best news I’ve heard all day.
Toby Wollin @ 39
The issue is that he is gay and uses his big megaphone to bash gays as a US Senator. He supported and campaigned for the constitutional amendment in Idaho to ban gay marriage. He sponsored the Family Marriage Amendment to enshrine discrimination into the US Constitution, and he (after his arrest!) wrote a letter to a constituent saying that the military should not revise Don’t Ask Don’t Tell to accommodate the homosexual lifestyle. All this while living a homosexual lifestyle, even if it is a lifestyle on the down-low.
The issue is not the bathroom solicitation (money isn’t mentioned in the police report). The issue is that the arrest for bathroom solicitation illustrates Senator Larry Craig (R-ID)’s — wait for it — HYPOCRISY.
Peterr @ 180

You people are so judgmental. Maybe he’s *not* gay… he just has an undercover cop fetish.

He did do something. Look, an experienced cop knows a drug deal when he sees it. To someone else they might not notice the dip or the transfer of product and money in a handshake or hug.
Same thing with vice operations. There are certain codes, kind of like when you see two pigeons in the park doing their dance. The female walks away all disinterested while the male puffs himself up and coos and bobs his head and shit. The, for lack of better phraseology, mating rituals involved in transient gay sex in men’s rooms and public parks, bus stations, train stations, etc are a similar thing. Cops working the scene long enough have learned what’s going on, just like cops working street prostitution involving male/female or he/she pros know what to look for.
Some of the behavior is not overt at all until you decode it.
It’s all Roland Barthes kind of semiotics stuff but when you know what to look for you can;t miss it.
cleter @ 55

Here’s a naive voice asking for clarification:
So all it takes is a tapping foot edging closer to the one in the next stall?
Ewwwww.
I’m guessing that when the police officer gives his full side of the story, the “I’m Not Gay” lawmaker will wish he had just disappeared into the night. Surely, the two had some post-stall interaction — like, say, looking at each other — before a ticket magically appeared. During those moments, did the “I’m Not Gay” lawmaker do his best to avoid any contact with the officer cause, after all, he’s not gay?
Clearly, I don’t get out enough.
speaking of Larry Haggard, I wonder how that back to school money drive is going?

From the Boston Herald:–
GOP leaders seek ethics probe of Idaho Senator
Boston Herald, United States - 1 hour ago
By AP WASHINGTON - Senate Republican leaders called for an ethics committee review Tuesday into Idaho Sen. Larry Craig’s guilty plea in a police sting …
OK.. lemme get this straight.. NOW they’re requesting an ETHICS probe, on one of their own?????? Geesh.. I always wondered what it would take to get them to turn on one of their own… I guess I now know the answer - if they have an opportunity to hate.

Schizophrenia has nothing to do with “split personalities.” It’s just one of many falsehoods that make life harder for people who suffer from that particular illness.

Thanks. I just guess I hope no one I know ever accidentally behaves in a pattern…it’s like getting on airplanes and looking guilty because you looked left and blinked five times before you scratched your left ear…then they yank you out of line and arrest you and send you to Gitmo…That is what I don’t like about this. I would rather have seen something concrete in the report where the actual offer is made, which in the report was when he ran his fingertips along the bottom of the partition. I guess I think the cop should have taken it further, but what do I know.
Blub @ 194
Actually, he’s being investigated by the GOP for admitting to something. Made members of the club respect omerta. Look at the Keating Five, one of whom, McCain, is still sucking the public teat. They didn;t turn on each other and they never admitted to anything more than servicing their constituents.
Hey, now there’s a novel defense for this guy!!
Other Pat @ 190
I have to confess that the foot tapping thing is something I’ve only seen in the movies. But my guess is that when someone starts playing footsie with you under a bathroom stall, they’re probably looking for sex. If you start playing footsie back, then you’re probably interested, too. If, on the other hand, you stomp on their toes, you’re probably not.
And can we please refrain from describing “trolling for sex in a public bathroom” as a “homosexual lifestyle”? It isn’t. It’s “trolling for sex in a public restroom”. And besides, Craig is NOT GAY.
David Ehrenstein @ 202
I didn’t even see this. I’ll go read it. Thanks.
You’re welcome. It explains all about the foot-tapping, the hand wiping and why the men who troll bathrooms for blow jobs don’t think they’re gay.
And it was written in 1970!
David Ehrenstein @ 203

I believe split pwersonality is dissociative disorder?
My mom was a catatonic schizophrenic…used to go into these weird poses and freeze there when she didn’t take her meds. Of course, the meds and the ECT gave her tardive dyskenisia.
She finally stopped taking meds altogether and never had any more problems after my wife and I had our first child back in the 70s.
I think it was a combination of the typical hysterical female diagnosis at first which led to her first hospitalization, then the forced shock therapies, then the heavy doses of meds, and then the post-traumatic stress of all of that catching up with her after she got out.
I think, basically, that her initial diagnosis was wrong but who the hell cared about locking up a woman back in the days of state hospitals and electric convulsiv e therapy, right? Turn out many a good stepford wife, I bet.
No. Refresh me.
LS @ 204: If you do something by mistake and you’re not actually guilty, you probably won’t plead guilty. If, on the other hand, you try to flee the police, and then you try to pull rank, and then you don’t tell anybody about it, and then you cut a deal with the prosecutor in which you plead guilty…in that case, you’re probably guilty.
Tearoom? He thought it was peeroom.
raven @ 202
And yet, nevertheless, categorically false.

I hadn’t been unfortunate enough to catch “Tucker” for a very long time, as I assiduously avoid him. A person of modest accomplishment, verbally assaulting people who don’t play in his league. America truly is the land of opportunity!
Frank Probst @ 207
Thanks, Frank: Guess that’s why I’m wondering how this “non-event” (cause he’s an “I’m Not Gay” lawmaker) developed. Whether an adult is approached in a nasty bathroom, on a beautiful beach, or in a lovely club — by whomever, of whatever make or model, the adult has the ability to be:
1)shocked and appalled
2)flattered but not interested
3)in agreement
… and to make that reaction clear.
Me thinks he doth protest too much.
His name is Leslie.
And he’s a fine one to talk about split personalities.
Frank Probst @ 207
Unless you like it rough.
Frank Probst @ 215
Frank I think you have it summed up nicely here; not to mention that Craig lied about not consulting with a lawyer.
David Ehrenstein @ 212
We were talking about fathers and how I ended up heading for the Nevada border. Anyway it started with a situation you are citing with this book.
wow.. faux news is really all over this guy.
Meanwhile, from the world of clueless:
RENO, Nev. — President Bush warned on Tuesday that Iran is plotting to extend its “murderous” influence over Iraq and is threatening to destabilize the Middle East under a “shadow of a nuclear holocaust.”
Hyperbole anybody?
once again, by popular demand, the infamous bathroom stall scene from Austin Powers I, with Tom Arnold cheering on from the next stall.
Other Pat at 218: It’s always the cover-up that kills you. But in Craig’s case, he’s been accused in the past of having sex in the restroom at Union Station. (Which is, I think, why he tried to cover up this arrest to begin with.)
David Ehrenstein @ 210
Thanks for that; I just saw it and ordered it.
Look at it this way:
If you *were* cruising a public restroom looking for gay sex, and got a chance to plead guilty to mere Disorderly Conduct, wouldn’t you take it too?
Hope this works (sorry, I can’t resist)

Where in the report did it say he ran from the police or resisted arrest?
Where does it say that he tried to pull rank? He was asked for ID, and he gave them his card, all he said was, “What do you you think about that?”…that could mean, as I said up above, that he wanted to know if it would suffice, because his bag with his license was not in the room with him.
Then the police asked him to produce his driver’s license.
Other than that, I agree with you that pleading guilty is pleading guilty for whatever reason.

Everyone understands that, right? That the Statesman didn’t publish the story because they couldn’t confirm, and it was only after the news of the arrest came out that they published ANYTHING?
The hypocrisy gets me, and I think he deserves to be smacked with that. However, as one of his constituents, can I say that the bastard

The hardest part was responding to cases in homes when guys started dying in the early days of AIDS. I had a born-again partner who actually put on a friggin mask in someone’s house when he found out it was a gay couple and one of the men was dying. I don’t see the social harm that the Minneapolis police prevented. The meaning of Craig’s tapping is understood as code only by another consenting adults. Did the cop tap back? If so, it sure sounds like entrapment.
I don’t like Republican senators, but in this case I see Craig as a victim. I’d like to see him tough it out.
It may be where I was raised, but Senator Craig’s use of the phrase “make it go away” to explain why he plead guilty, makes me think corruption or overweening privilege. Most people I know think about how to “fix” their mistakes not “make them go away”. It also indicates to me a lack of willingness to take responsibility for his actions.
I think Craig is right.
He’s not gay.
He’s a homosexual.
And I for one think there’s a hell of a difference.
Craig is a self-hating, closeted homosexual.
But he’s never done anything in his pathetic life to merit being called “gay.”
Being gay is about being strong enough to live the truth of your life. Being gay is about overcoming the stupidity of anti-gay cultural bias and hatred.
Craig is just a sad pathetic person who has allowed fear and self-hatred to run his life. Craig has allowed this fear to twist him like every other self-loathing closeted homosexual (think Cohn, Hoover and the list goes on…).
We need to be mature enough to know the difference between these two.
When Craig claims “I’m not gay” its just another window into the self-deceptive compartmentalization that has ruled his life. “I’m not one of those people.”
He knows who he is. He knows he likes men and wants to be with men. But he doesn’t have the courage to live his life honestly.
Pathetic? Yeah.
Closeted? Yeah.
Homosexual. Yeah.
Gay? No way. Maybe some day, if he grows a pair and can be honest with himself and the world. But not now.

Tough out his guilty plea?
I am afraid Senator Craig is just going to make things worse. I suppose it’s possible the police officer assigned to the men’s room (what an unpleasant assignment) was “mistaken” about everything in his report and that Senator Craig does have a wide stance when urinating as he claims, but common sense and one’s own or at any rate my own life’s experience suggests otherwise. I know for a fact some police officers have lied. But I have never seen or heard of a wide stance in the circumstances Senator Craig has described. The whole thing is very sad. Given Senator Craig’s long time championing of a very narrow defintion of family values, and his criticism of those who do not share his “christian” values, he perhaps deserves to feel the sting of public humiliation as punishment for hypocrisy. But he’s still one of us: a flawed human being whose family does not deserve to be hurt. Senator Craig’s hypocrisy is fair game. Of course he’s trapped by people who say things like he has said. Somehow we should try to take the traps away. Not the people. Just the traps. The self righteous, holier than thou trappers who make it unsafe and unbearably difficult for people like Senator Craig to be themselves should be persuaded to turn in their traps. Of course it would help immensely if Senator Craig would turn in his trap first.
I have to giggle a bit… the good Senator doesn’t have any sense at all if he think chanting “I’m NOT gay I’m NOT gay” and clicking his heels three times is going to convince the viewing public of his lack of gayness
I think that gay groups all over the country should come to Boise and parade in this guy’s defense- bring the rainbows and the whole deal.

Okay. I’d go for that.
Although he’s never really seemed that gleeful.
“I am NOT GAY, I never have been gay.”
Larry Craig
“I’m gay. I’m very gay. I’m steeped in gayness.”
George Costanza
Run, Larry, Run. Don’t give up your seat. No one could be more NOT GAY than you. Clearly you are being harrassed by a newspaper too afraid to print a negative word about you. Carry on, don’t quit. Run for re-election on an I’M NOT GAY platform, that will show them.
Some have expressed compassion for this bewildered and confused man. I am afraid I’m having trouble mustering much. If he wants to hate himself, fine nut I am sick and tired of clowns like this taking their troubles out on the rest of the world
Got a question. I just read the police report and the cop describes that Craig was wearing a gold ring when he was “fingering” the bottom of the stall. Later in the report Craig is reported to say that he “could not remove ring from left ring finger” What’s the point of that and why would the cop note it?

Craig called the MN Airport Police a week later to obtain the police report and assigned court date, as well as the name and phone number of the Asst. District Attorney in charge of the case. He told two distinct police officers that he needed the information for his “legal counsel”. When he obtained that information he said “that’s just what I need”.
It’s absolutely certain that Craig had, at the very least, considered going to a lawyer and was getting the information needed for that.

Officer Snedker: “Craig told me he needs a contact so that his lawyer can speak to someone…”
Officer Karsnia ” Craig demanded the information for the law firm…”
He might as well say, “I am not a conservative asshole.” It’s just as believable.
