Gonzo wanted out like a bunch of others because they don’t want to go thru another build up to war like they went thru with Iraq.

And that is what they are doing. Look at the story about the $20,000 “Quick Deploy” bonus they are giving out in the Army Recruiting (if they ship out before end of Sept.). That gives them time to do boot camp and be ready by early Dec.

Some of these officials are getting out because they wont be able to once another “war” breaks out.

Among the names floated Monday by administration officials were Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and White House anti-terrorism coordinator Frances Townsend. Former Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson is a White House prospect. So is former solicitor general Theodore B. Olson, but sources were unsure whether he would want the job.

On Monday night, Republican officials said two other figures who are being seriously considered are Securities and Exchange Committee Chairman Chris Cox, who is former chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and is popular with conservatives; and former Attorney General William P. Barr, who served under President George H.W. Bush from 1991 to 1993 and is now general counsel of Verizon Communications.

Funny, after the previous post asked who the Dems would NOT impeach next, all I can say is that V.P. Dick Cheney is “fair game”.

I think Gonzales resignation was part of the deal so that democrats would support the FISA bill. Waiting ’til now was face saving for Bush.

I couldn’t believe that the dem’s would support the odious bill without any concessions whatsoever.

Interesting possibility.

According to Townsend, it was bc she was pushing to bring down the wall (although there is input to the contrary – that she benefitted with personal power from how she handled “the wall). According to others, it was a “truthiness” issue.

“The chief judge was so annoyed with me,” says Townsend, “that he wouldn’t permit me personally to attend, because I had pushed so hard against the restrictions they had imposed.” Others say the real root of Lamberth’s anger at Townsend was the false information given by the FBI in dozens of wiretap applications to the FISA court. Lamberth declined to comment. But he told Reno’s successor, Ashcroft, that he had lost faith in Townsend.

Recently, Lamberth has pretty much admitted there were some “truthiness” issues with someone before the FISC.
