From the “Beating My Head Against The Wall” Department:
Sadly, The Friends Committee on National Legislation, the lobbying arm of the Quakers, backs “The Iraq Study Group Implementation Act” (S. 1545 in the Senate, H.R. 2574 in the House) — even though, as they admit, it does nothing to actually bring the troops home. This is sad because the Quakers are good people and I’m afraid that they’re putting their efforts to the service of reviving a very bad bill in September.
For those who need a refresher, here’s mcjoan’s original diary on the subject. The short version: The bill is all about allowing “maverick” Republicans like Specter and DINOs like Ken Salazar to pull a fast one on their constituents, pretending to vote to bring the troops home when they actually are doing nothing of the sort. Harry Reid had killed this effort earlier by temporarily shelving the Defense Authorization bill, but it looks like the Friends Committee got snookered into trying to revive this turkey.
Aaaaargh. (*smack* *thud* *thud*)

And out at home by a heffer step.
PW, here’s my Head-*n, you certainly need it more than I do…!!!
When did Congress start listening to Quakers?
QG?
When did the Quakers start lobbying for violent occupations?
Eureka Springs @ 6
“Quaker Oats are shot from guns”
(never understood that one, anyway)
We fuck around about Iraq.
We need to pull out.
Let the ME work out its own solution, whatever that is.
And accept the bloodshed in the interim.
No Dem or Repub is willing to let that happen.
Eureka Springs @ 6
That’s the $64,000 question…!!!
Loo Hoo. @ 5
At least 49 Senators listen very intently to a very, very lame quacker.
Aside from (I hope) their absolute anti-war stance, how do Quakers line up these days? Is there such a thing as a Republican Quaker?
Being “snookered” is fast becoming more than just a casual past-time for many of the invertebrate Democrats, it’s becoming a lifestyle.
I fear that as the ‘08 election grows closer, actual spine will become harder and harder to find as “speed triangulation” occurs as campaigns intensify.
I’m sorry the Quakers got suckered, but they’re hardly the first (and won’t be the last) to get taken by the words/action of the Beltway’s “Wise and Serious Old Men”.

At least as far back as Herbert Hoover’s 1929 State of the Union report. Hoover was a Quaker, as was Nixon.
Sadly, they would not be representative of the Quakers of my acquaintance.
CTuttle @ 14
my contempt for Joe Lieberman…
Peterr @ 16
Heh, Vermont’s one Prez! Nixon is news to me… Dang, learn something new…!!! *g*
My bad, his predecessor ’silent cal’ was from Vermont, Iowa is where Hoover was born!!! 8-(
I like Quakers.
I work with them.
Do I believe all Quakers tell the truth as they know it?
No.
We’re never going to get good government as long as the present system of financing elections remains unchanged.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 20
Unless Gore wins.
Thanks for the post. Just furthers the argument for atheism. When my barber (or anyone) asks about what’cha doing for easter It’s “I’m not religious.” Eschew hypocrisy.
Eureka Springs @ 6
Um, yeah.
The impression I get from their website is that they think the bill’s a step in the right direction, when in fact it’s worse than nothing as it gives Bush carte blanche while pretending to rap his knuckles.
behindthefall @ 11
Yep – I think his name was Richard Nixon…am I right?

Any way to tell them that?
Loo Hoo — Thank you thank you! The internet cable arrived safe and sound. Thanks so much.

Nixon was a Quaker.. that explains so much.
Asking Bushco to conduct diplomacy and ask folks like this Iranians for permission to leave Iraq? Move over, PW.. I need to bang my head on the wall with ya.

TexBetsy @ 32
Excellent! Thought I put it in the pocket of that suitcase.
I was resting earlier and had this little daydream. The military leaders ,who understand that this war is decimating the various branches, their families and the country, and that our troops could be benefiting humanity helping with the disasters we have seen in the world, and that our country is going bankrupt financially and morally, well you get the idea— these military leaders finally got fed up with watching George Bush pretend he knows something about war or about the armed services and they took over. They went into the Oval Office and took it over. They went into Congress and said, It’s over, stop the rhetoric and create a new administration and just get over the political nonsense. The war is killing the country, the president is a fool and you need to start over. We’re waiting.
I am not a military person and would certainly have a stroke if one of my sons joined the service. I have no idea where this little fantasy came from, but I do believe that there are Generals who have good hearts and enlisted folk who want what’s best for the country and don’t believe it’s war. Seth Moulton, Paul Reikhoff, Abby Pickett to name a Few I would trust them not to shoot me for being a liberal.
It made me feel good. I can’t explain it.
Happy Birthday to you CTuttle!
Now, pass it over.
I can’t inhale online. :)
But, I can remember.
Loo Hoo. @ 36
i thought you were still using it when i went off to get the wheelchair tire repaired.
Look, I’m really angry about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq but I’m not suspicious about 9/11.

LS @ 34
CTuttle, oh my gosh, I forgot to ask what happened with your mother in law? Did your wife make it in time?
Ha! The Larry Craig (one of Mitt’s biggest supporters) video with his thoughts on Romney, has already been removed from Youtube:
67 United States soldiers dead in Iraq since Congress went on vacation.
O/T in my own post, but I had to mention this:
I’ve been offline most of the day, so I didn’t see the news about Larry Craig until just now.
I can just hear Jane snickering as she typed that post. ;-)

He’s been awfully quiet lately. The only “bad” thing I heard, was an interview with his daughter, and she said she knew “for a fact” that he had no plans to run. I think the interview was in July. It was vague enough though to leave the door open.

Sorry to hear CT.

Betsy, I could have been using it. I don’t know why I caught that on my way out and not my phone charger, though. Want to guess what Hyatt charged me to get my $20.00 phone charger back?
Poking around Holt’s website, I came across this statement from Aug 3 on the bill to update FISA :
Sounds like at least one Quaker is thinking clearly about BushCo. Perhaps Holt could talk to his fellow Quakers about this bill, and it might help. Any residents of NJ-12 around, who could give Holt’s office a call?
[His statement on Iraq isn’t too bad either (though it seems to have been written last year, and hasn’t been updated).]
Loo Hoo. @ 60
Proof that it was removed. Go to youtube and punch in Larry Craig Mitt Romney, and it says it has been removed. Mr. LS found the “story” in the Rawstory article, Senator Arrested in Men’s Room.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 20
I’m a bit ambivalent Okloahoma Kiddo. Here in Australia we have public funding of elections but the problem is – how much do you give to each candidate? What happens here is that payments are made after the election. Provided that you received more than 4% of the vote, you are paid at the rate of $2 a vote. Parties still do fundraising.
Do you know of a system of public funding that’s better than this?
Elliott @ 59
So Craig shall be the recipient of TRex’s jowls Tonite???
How much Loo Hoo?
GSD @ 58
I know, I know, I think I’m losing my mind. GSD, you know me, no military bones in my body, idealistic Pollyanna all the way. How can I be comforted by thoughts of a military coup? This country is making me crazy.

We have Clean Elections here in Maine, and it seems to work, although Maine is not very representative in many ways of the US (we’d probably be a good Canadian province, hint, hint).
My criticism of OKK’s statement is that votes can override dollars. Get people pissed off enough, and the dollars don’t mean much. Unfortunately, it takes an unbelievable amount of effort to actually piss most Americans off enough to vote.

I wish you all a good night, please don’t think I mean what my dream implies. I needed to share it and know this is a safe place.
Re: the future of FDL, I arrived here from a link at C&L about 2 years ago searching for a Libby story. It was a lot smaller then and only Jane and ReddHedd (Christy, incognito) were posting. It has grown in size and scope, but has remained true to its roots. Jane and Christy have created a community which supports its members and moves the important issues forward. They have also been incredibly responsive to a very vocal readership’s input and suggestions. I don’t see that changing and I believe there is huge potential as we move into the elections.

The two most disturbing aspects of the Larry Craig story are:
1) Leaving the stall without flushing.
2) Leaving the restroom without washing his hands.
Larry Craig is a very dirty, dirty boy.

zennurse, I’ve had those thoughts too. Christy smacked me upside the head for them! She’s right. The last thing we want is a military govt., especially with the Blackwater contingent.

PW,
The Q&A from the first link of your post is very depressing. “Naive” is the most charitable term that comes to mind, and let’s just leave the less charitable terms unspoken.
It’s possible that members might use the bill for political cover? Possible? Really? Who could have anticipated . . .
*sigh*
zennurse @ 89
zennurse: don’t feel bad about your dream. Given the horrible mess this admin has created, we all feel the need to be rescued, the need for some safety and the need to return to something like normal.
Generals could do it, but of course the problem would be what happens next. There are certainly well-intentioned generals, but once that kind of power falls into military hands, before long a not so nice one would grab it…
GSD @ 106
Nawty, Nawty…!!!
GSD, you have a very special way with words, bud. I always look forward to your “breaking” news. Totally different flavor than punaise, but just as rich!
Zennurse,
Yeah. It is really a sad time for this Republic.
I honestly think that it may have slipped away from us all.
I hope not, but the more I look the less I like what I see.
I also feel that Bush would have a hard time turning the military against America.
It is just what I feel.

Ha! Conservative bloggers not sorry Abu resigned via Think Progress:
does a review of the conservative blogosphere’s reaction to the Gonzales resignation and finds “there is precious little love lost for the departing AG.” RedState writes, “I am not sorry to see AGAG go.” Andy McCarthy at the National Review writes the “resignation was overdue,” and Captain’s Quarters adds that Gonzales’ attorney scandal “has been a royal embarrassment.”
What would you think would be bigger news — and hit the press quicker?
– A congressman (Bob Filner) lipping off to and pushing airport security personnel, OR:
– A male Senator (Larry Craig) caught trying to solicit sex from a male undercover cop in an airport bathroom known as a meeting-place for sex trysts?
The Filner (Democrat) altercation happened on August 19 and was national news within hours. The Craig (Republican) incident occurred June 11, and I and the rest of the world are only hearing about it now — even though stories about the gay-bashing conservative Republican Craig’s penchant for airport sex with men have been circulating online and elsewhere for a while.
Oh, and will the oh-so-aggressively-hetero pundits currently fangirling Mitt Romney (in a perfectly hetero manner, mind you) keep it up now that Mitt’s biggest ally (and — until recently — Senate liaison for Romney’s campaign, as this abruptly zapped YouTube video showed) has been caught trying to solicit illicit man-nookie? Fangirling is OK with them only so long as they don’t, you know, actually brush hands openly with gayness.
OKK. I just had a thought. What’s really needed is Truth in Political Advertising legislation. All this nastiness, this gutter stuff, the Ann Coulters and the Melanie Morgans of this world only thrives in a poisonous atmosphere and that toxin spreads around society. The road rage, the rise of television shows where one person is ritually humiliated every week, it all comes from the same place.
People talk about civility in the blogosphere when what we should be talking about is civility in politics. Force candidates to sell themselves and their ideas, rather than denigrate their opponents by demanding that all ads are reviewed indepently to ensure that the information in the ad is not misleading.
Massive fines for airing misleading ads. And who could vote against it? “Sen Vitter votes to give himself permission to lie!”
Just a thought.
Has everyone preordered their Fair Game book by Valerie Wilson?

Bush Motorcade Crash Kills N.M. Officer
Updated 9:09 PM ET August 27, 2007
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – A police officer in President Bush’s motorcade crashed his motorcycle and died Monday, less than a year after a crash in Hawaii killed another motorcycle officer accompanying the president.
He must be going for a trifecta.

Gonzales: A Failed Affirmative Action Case
snip
Gonzales becomes an ironic example of the old conservative argument that affirmative action programs punish individuals targeted for their help by placing them in positions they’re not prepared for. He might have been a capable (if highly controversial) White House Counsel, but as Scott Horton pointed out repeatedly for months on end, Gonzales was an utter disaster as Attorney General, demoralizing an entire institution with his painfully incoherent, meandering explanations on why seemingly capable U.S. Attorneys were thrown aside for political reasons in the middle of Bush’s years in office. Nothing qualified him for the position beyond his friendship with Bush and his status as a bullet point on Why The Republican Party Is Inclusive.

You wouldn’t be outting an undercover officer, would you, Teddy? That kind of thing doesn’t go over too well here.

I agree with this comment:
I am gay, and I say………BRAVO to the cop……….we do not need this guys…..go to a gay bar, meet online…..but not in public bathrooms….
ccmask @ 190
I still think this has nothing to do with ethnicity. Shrub needed yet another yes-man.. he found one with a Harvard law degree and Texan sensibilities. The yes-man said yes-yes-yes right up to the moment he was forced off the proverbial plank.
As far as I’m concerned, his name might as well have been “Mike Brown”
It gets worse..they f’ing never learn..now they are begging:

TSF, could you double-check that link please? It brings up a story about airport cart safety, for me…
LS @ 196
If they’d read their history, they’d know that selling dispensations was the downfall of the Roman Catholic Church (as a political and economic empire).
But I guess they prefer oral history…
Republicans can never blame anything on the person who did wrong. They always use excuses and I reckon blaming it on Affirmative Action will become a talking point for some in the right blogosphere.
CD @ 199
If you watch the video at the link, the airport policeman shows up at 2:31. Yes, he’s talking about airport cart safety at Minneapolis/StPaul airport. Shockingly, people are hit by these carts alla time, including former Senator George McGovern!
His name is the same as the policeman on the arrest report.
ccmask @ 201
Now, that’s making putrid lemonade out of rancid lemons.
RonD @ 201
piss and vinegar
Did Sgt. Dave Karsnia piss someone off?
His duties include golf cart enforcement at the airport and trolling for lewd sex acts in the bathrooms.
I hope he gets a promotion soon.

howdy y’all!
boing reverse one and a half somersaults with two and a half twists, in the free position, no splash
g’evening everyone
nice work figuring that out teddy – how on earth did you find the airport cart safety film and put 2 and 2 together?
no splash? again? cool diving!
Suzanne @ 206
Nice dive, considering you never even took off your detective’s cap.
zennurse @ 89
zennurse,
I haven’t “seen” you in quite a while. Hope all is well. Come back soon. Don’t worry about the dream – what’s sad is that such a thing could actually seem like the better alternative.
well, since trex is typing away backstage i figured i would dive in on time since he is late.
Hello SK and Suz!
Are we all zed-hunting?
LS @ 189
Hey, Suzanne!
off topic:
Why (oh, why!!) is TDS a re-run??
Wanna hear about 10th grade? This is what I put on my facebook note:
Suzanne @ 211
Fashionably late, no doubt.
Either that, or he’s being a terrible tease.
Cassie, Suzanne.
Ciao.

Is there an affirmative action program for soulless bastards? Seems like they’re finding employment everywhere right now.
This statement made my day… “Team Bush must thread the needle between protecting itself with a loyal insider and mollifying Democrats in Congress who want to know where the bodies at the Department of Justice are buried.”
Happy birthday, to me…!!! ;-)
TPM has craig romney utube up
ccmask @ 201
I think that’s right, which is yet one more reason why I’m leary about this ethnicity angle here. That’s going to be the drawroom talking point for rethugs.. The total failure that was AGAG will provide them with yet more reason to be smug about their own racism… and they’ll be quick to blame his failures on affirmative action or whatever. We shouldn’t. We should put the blame where it belongs — on shrub’s love of absolutist tendancies and his desire to surround himself with a cult of mindless, ethically-impaired yes-men.
Cass – baby girl survived a schedule like that her senior year – her tummy adjusted in a few days and she was good for the rest of the semester – second semester had very different class choices :)
Happy birthday CTuttle! Did you already get cake and stuff?
Making a pro-active denial when your name hasn’t come up yet in a scandal just because you’re single and people allude to that in a prurient way is just sad.
I would feel sorry for this guy — I know men who live his life. But they haven’t had the opportunity for his virulent gay-bashing on a public stage, and haven’t his horrid voting record on equal rights for people just like himself.
There. All my potential sorry-for-him is gone.
yellowdog jim @ 215
two week break, Colbert as well.
By the way. Has anyone noticed what is going on in the Bush World of diplomacy?
The Bush Bots(Keane/Biddle) have begun to badmouth the UK because they are pulling their troops out of Iraq and France’s Sarkozy is stepping in to the role of BFF for Chimpy.
Apparently Bush has a new French Poodle.

Froomkin’s taking a week off . . . and even emptywheel unplugged from the toobz for a long weekend.
Teddy, I feel bad for Mrs. Senator Bathroom.

Don’t you wonder why she didn’t notice something a little, um, off? She didn’t hear about the train station meet-ups?
RonD @ 230
A couple of French corporations will be awarded no bid contracts worth about 6 times the cost of the French militarys limited support.
If memory serves, Mrs Senator Bathroom was a Larry Craig staffer who brought two children into the marriage. The possibility that this has been an elaborate from-the-start sham in which she participated — and from which she benefitted — is more likely than the situation sweet Lorena-tendent Wendy Vitter found herself in.
Wee = wee.

Closest thing I’ve found is Bill Maher, and that’s on HBO. But, Tim Robbins is on the panel and he’s pretty cool.
i hope TRex is okay.
he’s working up a sweat for us and doing his athens radio show too.
pobrecito.
Wow…..
US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, embroiled in a row over the sacking of eight US attorneys, has formally announced his resignation.

Jeebus, you’re probably right. The French contingent wouldn’t even have to be large. The PR value of having any in Iraq would be the payoff.
i saw a TRex post upstairs.
New Thread courtesy of your always modest zedster.
Despite Frances reluctance to engage in Iraq, they have a pretty shabby colonial record.
Read about the Rwanda genocide. France was pretty despicable during that atrocity.
Now they have a wanna-be player on their hands. I can’t wait for a baguette chomping Bush to yell out “Yo, Sarkozy”.

What the hapless Haggard is begging for is a major fraud indictment by the IRS. Nonprofit organizations, be they animal shelters, church resale shops or art museums require a detailed applicationprocess. This takes months and as much as a year to complete the process to receive IRS nonprofit 501 designation approval.
Given his background in church ministries there can be no excuse for Haggard not knowing these facts.
I was extremely disappointed when the American Friends Service Committee, ecumenical though they were, bought into the bogus “war on terror” marketing campaign launched by the Washington Warmongers™ before the smoke had cleared at ground zero of the WTC towers attack. I chastised them for this gross impropriety, straightaway. These are moments when the Quakers’ beliefs are really tested and I must say they failed miserably. To this latest let-down, I merely say, pish and posh!
GSD @ 106
And there is no evidence he “wiped”. But maybe he doesn’t need to with his “wide stance”.
Jonathan @ 52
The Internet is a fabulous tool for communication and blogs are the core of mass discussions. Used in the political world we’re able to increase the power of the public and that shifts the balance away from the few and towards the many. This will increase the cost to the Rich to maintain their current advantages or it might force them to listen a little to other views of how the world might be shaped to work better for everybody.
I don’t necessarily believe that public financing of elections is the answer. I don’t feel so certain the Rich won’t simply find some way to interfere to their own benefit. Besides, it would tax some people who aren’t all that interested or can’t afford to participate in politics.
What kind of arguments really get to the Rich? I’d suggest you approach them conceptually the same as anyone else: you find what they’re interested in and discuss with them ways to do it better, for them and everyone. Sometimes they aren’t disagreeable so much as simply uninformed or uninvolved.
TRex has got your Late, Late upstairs.
Phoenix Woman @ 137
I confronted a Repub friend about that. He’d been saying what a hypocrite Edwards was for having a big house, being rich, paying a lot for the haircut and then saying he was all for the poor.
I think it’s just a rationalization for the fact they don’t have anything else to dislike except that he’s a Dem.
When I confronted my friend he was just kind of blank. He didn’t really have a thought on the matter. Heck, maybe he was just repeating talking points. You know how these guys are: the borg tells them what to do and say.
I don’t think it ever occurred to him that Edwards actually did feel that the disparity in wealth was immoral or an economic problem.
Jonathan @ 147
It’s the ‘vision thing’. It’s Leadership.
Just keep your ears open and listen to the speeches and debates to hear what the Dem presidential candidates say. It’s all there and commentary is on the blogs.
