And Alberto Gonzales did call upon the name of the LORD from the bottom of the pit, and cried “let not your ears be deaf to my lamentations, O LORD!” And verily the LORD did answer:
Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.
Craig’s arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.
A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a “he said/he said misunderstanding,” and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.
After he was arrested, Craig, who is married, was taken to the Airport Police Operations Center to be interviewed about the lewd conduct incident, according to the police report. At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, “What do you think about that?” the report states.
Craig is up for re-election next year. I suppose he could try and resuscitate his career by doing duets with Elton John for a while or something, but I’m guessing the Republican fad for spending more time with one’s family might be spreading.
Mike Rogers…right again.

ZEDUNOFITZAROOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!
man, I finally got one, thought I had one at least three times today
ANybody see a pattern here?
The Governor is a R if it comes to that
I read!! -3?
Yet another member of the Grand ole Perv party. Anyone surprised?
Oh Jane … now that is fun!
Republicans sure love them gloryholes …
How did they keep it quiet for so long? I guess getting caught in the Union station bathroom was not enough excitement for Larry.
I am still waiting for Howie Klein to drop the bomb on Miss McConnell.
I wonder how many more stories held back behind the GOP dam of crap, controlled by Rove and Gonzo, are now going to start bursting forth in a veritable Johnstown flood of pure sleaze?
If you look up Craig’s wikipedia entry, this is there right now. Won’t last very long:
he is also a huge, flaming, turd burglarizing butt pirate due to his man-puss soliciting in a Minneapolis airport.
As I mentioned in EPU land below, given the lag time between the arrest (June) and the plea deal (Aug. 8th), I’m guessing someone has been sitting on this waiting for the time to be right to knock something else out of the headlines. Now the MSM can obsess about someone other than Abu, with the added bonus that it’s a sex scandal.
wildly speculated Mehlman angle:
“Toto, we’re not in Ken’s ass anymore”
What is it with these perverted pedophile repukes?
21st century restrooms marked D or R.
Jane!
I wonder how many times his “What do you think about that” worked?
A nice pic of craig here;

EPU’d voting record on sexual orientation matters:
# Voted YES on constitutional ban of same-sex marriage. (Jun 2006)
# Voted NO on adding sexual orientation to definition of hate crimes. (Jun 2002)
# Voted NO on expanding hate crimes to include sexual orientation. (Jun 2000)
# Voted YES on prohibiting same-sex marriage. (Sep 1996)
# Voted NO on prohibiting job discrimination by sexual orientation. (Sep 1996)
Cozumel @ 3
But it’s only a misdemeanor. We need to convince Sen. Craig to hang in there as long as possible.
Sen Craig for Daddy?
Gromit @ 2
nicely put
if they say they are against homosexuals they have some personal issues with their own sexuality
if they say they are pro war they dodged the military
if they say they are fiscal concervatives they want to spend everyone else’s money
if they say they are for clean envirnment instead they give corporation free reign
if they say they want to protect the children they will not back child protection
if they say they are for securing our ports they will not fund port security
if they say they are for smmall goverment they will expand it exponentially
if they say they want to preserve the constitution they will trash it at every turn
if they say “no child left behind” they will underfund education for children
yes
there appears to be a pattern

Mike Rogers, who calls himself “the nation’s leading gay activist blogger” has just finished a nationally-broadcast interview on the Ed Schultz Radio Show in which he alleges that Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig has engaged in same-sex sexual activity.
Senator Craig’s office flatly rejected the claims. “The Senator says this story is absolutely ridiculous – almost laughable,” said press secretary Sid Smith. “It has no basis in fact.”
Laugh, Sid. Laugh.

I wonder when Republicans are going to realize that people who honestly come to grips with their sexuality will be less likely to resort to bathrooms. I feel sad that Republicans cannot allow people to be who they are, driving them to desperate acts.
Are there any Dems running in the primary? Can Idaho be swung (I mean here, politically?) :-)

Probably fed to Roll Call by the White House itself, just in time for the evening news.
Don’t you think the WH was aware of this arrest? Gonzo’s abrupt resignation might have been timed.
Normally I would think that a silly possibility but this is the Bush WH and although Rove just left, his influence never will.

DO they really want this and Abu together in the news. Doesn’t it just make one think about how “closeted” the whole White House is – Rove, Bush, Bolton, Mehlman and Abu himself. It sounds like the whole Catholic priest scandal with the upper up Cardinals screaming about sin among the youth and screwing boys in the pews.

Really? Really? Is Craig up for re-election in 2008? Please someone come in here and tell us about Idaho in 2008.

Slightly OT, but since we’re a bit into FDL abbreviations:

Full disclosure: I’m making a list of these things, and will send it to somebody at FDL before long, might be useful.

IOKIYAR = It’s OK If You Are Republican –
Coined by Lambert at Corrente, if memory serves . . .
That line where Craig said “what do you think about that” reminds me of a scene in the movie Pink Cadilac. While Clint Eastwood is inside the bar knocking men around, Bernadette Peters is waiting outside in the pink cadilac convertible with the top down. A man comes down the street wearing a raincoat and flashes Bernadette Peters. He then says “what do you think about that”. Bernadette Peters bends forward to get a better look and then responds “it look like a pen*s only much smaller”. The scene had nothing to do with the main story, just like Craig’s comment has nothing to do with his feature story. Just a funny aside.
And Alberto Gonzales did call upon the name of the LORD from the bottom of the pit, and cried “let not your ears be deaf to my lamentations, O LORD!” And verily the LORD did answer:
the turn of phrase that keeps us coming back to FDL

It’s just a shame that in this day and age he couldn’t be honest about himself. I suppose his wife and family were impediments. But to campaign against gay rights, well it’s just not right.
I feel for his family.
Say, uh, it looks like Elton John is going perform in Missoula, MT in September (no joke). Maybe Elton will call Larry up the the stage. Or maybe Larry’s the guy to call for back-stage passes. Or … gee this could go on and on.

I suppose there will be a lot of speculation and investigation into how this story languished for so long, but, as with so much these days, I can’t help but wonder if some fucking room in the NSA started routing the important elements of this in the direction of the WH soon after the NSA locked into a phrase which included the word sets “Sen. Larry Craig,” “arrested” and “airport mens’room.”
TeddySanFran @ 86
*slaps head*
Of course!
And didn’t Keith do a fine job last night, with his NBC pre-game version of Countdown? Of course, he had to remind Mo Rocca to watch the . . . ahem . . . vivid language, because it was on NBC, not MSNBC.

Oh, of course, sometimes I forget the source (google) of all knowledge. WPITW = Worst Person In The World. And thanks, Peterr, for the difference between *g* and *G*. Actually, I’m trying to concentrate on ones that are common or unique to FDL. There is a list on Wikipedia, but it doesn’t include a lot of things used here.
What did Jane say the other day? It’s like a steaming roving pile of s*it.
PeterK @ 63
WPITW=Worst Person In The World – Keith Olberman on Countdown nominates a bronze, silver and gold candidate each night based on the lunacy and hypocrisy and lies told by people in the news. Rust LimpBalls and Bill Orally often in the competition just because.
Wolf Blitzer now reporting this story; waiting for him to quote punaise.
Howie Klein has all of the gory details. Howie’s last paragraph is a teaser:
Maybe the Republican Party should start a fund to help their incumbent closet cases with psychological care. Larry Craig is obviously screaming for help. The other hypocritical Republican senators denying they are gay while voting against equality for gay men and women and their families are Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC). There are even more in the House but we’re saving the names of most of them– not the ones everyone knows about like David Dreier and Jim McCrery– until a little closer to the election.

We in Iowa are open minded except when we are not. But we are trending the right way

I am shocked, shocked, that Republicans have such a hard time finding dates. So much data to absorb, with the Friday news dump on Monday. Huffington Post is linking to a story about Jeff Gannon’s new book. But it is about journalism, even though no one was interviewed for it. He discusses the many bad liberals who are terribly biased, such as Helen Thomas, “She’s little more than a heckler.”
It Is OK To Be A Hypocrite If You Are A Republican.
__________________________
Gannon will release his book, “The Great Media War: A Battlefield Report,” on Sept. 4. The book chronicles his experiences at the White House and what he believes is the media’s liberal bias.
But don’t expect Gannon’s book to be a tawdry tell-all. Gannon says that he “deals with” his personal life in the book but adds, “My story is just a small part of it.” And besides, he’s not quite sure what all the fuss was about anyway. “It’s all irrelevant,” he says. “None of it had anything to do with my work as a reporter. … I have nothing to expose besides liberal media bias.”
“In my mind, I was the most honest reporter [in the White House press corps] because I was absolutely transparent with regards to my [conservative] perspective,” Gannon says. “My work has never been discredited.”
Gannon says he didn’t interview anyone for the 250-page book, which took him five years to write. Instead he’s relying on public transcripts and records for supporting evidence.
Why do members of Congress use bathrooms? I mean really, with their money they could at least get a motel, use the yellow pages and call up room service.
And really, nights like tonight I am so thankul for FDL and the internets. Imagine sitting at home relying on Wolfie to give you the news. They must hate it.

I believe it was lunch, actually.
More important: Is Gonzo supposed to be Jesus or Judas?
my former husband blew his entire knee out, on a trampoline, demonstrating, and had to go for tests an hour away from here…….he was packed into the back seat, crutches, pillows, ice…….we got sandwiches to stop along the way at a beautiful rest stop…….after lunch, i was packing him into the back seat (4 door large car), moving stuff to the front seat and then to the back after he was settled in, he made a joke about joining him back there, and i said no i was too pissed………plus i wouldn’t have anyway………
pulled out of the rest stop, and trooper’s lights went on, i thought it was because i had kicked on the cruise control while passing a truck, and was over the speed limit………
nope
he asked for my license, etc., and kept looking into the back seat, then the front seat, where the left-overs from lunch were……looked at my wedding ring, was acting strange……ends up, they’d had problems with ‘meet-ups’ at the rest stop, and we were reported as having sex…….someone just saw the part of me bent over into the back seat, throwing jackets and pillows around packing him into the car……..
was hilarious……..he was laying back there with a wrapped up huge knee, ice, crutches………and i was beyond pissed at him for doing it in the first place………….and was having a hard time smiling.
about 20 minutes later we passed two more cops pulled off the road, they looked at us and started laughing…….not much traffic on that road……..the trooper had already passed the story on to his buds……then i laughed………then it was funny.
and I read that as “until a little closer to the erection”
LS @ 143
Maybe someone heard about Joe Lieberman’s $387,000-plus petty cash expenses during last year’s primary, and figured that the other Senator from Connecticut had that much cash lying around his office, too.
If so, I’m relatively certain that they left Dodd’s campaign office very disappointed.
LS @ 144
Indeed this is the most interesting unexplored question of the day. IIRC there was a break in several weeks ago at a Dem Representative’s headquarters, but I forget the details… Does anyone remember that one?
TexBetsy @ 5
In reflecting about this, I’m wondering exactly what perversion is involved here? I’m thinking about Barney Frank as the counter-example, so I am thinking that it might be well to be careful about what words we use.
“Pervert” might be one of those words understood differently by different people. In this case, for example, many people (but probably not Firepups) will assume that the perversion is homosexuality. However, as the Barney Frank example makes clear, I think Craig’s problem is that he did what he did (whatever it was) in a public place, with unsuspecting members of the same sex.
What is the legal definition of “lewd,” anyway?

Famous people or those in prominent positions often have an inflated sense of what their status can do for them.
Though at that point it may have been a reasonable gamble — he was going to have to give his ID, so even if the chance was slim of getting a cop who was deferential or corrupt enough to let a senator off the hook, it was worth a try.
Recall, please, that the Watergate break-in was to retrieve a previously placed tap. Or to get more of Larry O’Brien’s Howard Hughes records, depending upon whom you believe.

Hi PeterK.
I am doing well but had a frustrating day at work. I love my job, but my back hurts after waking up so early and dealing with fools all day.
Came home though to find that my 8th grade son was in all of the wrong classes at school today, but went to the counselors on his own after school and got it all fixed.
Here’s an interesting photo of Abu and his little one, Antonio, at his confirmation hearing. Looks like he and Pat Leahy were on better terms then, but Antonio is giving us a glimpse into the future.
I love BAGNews. I highly recommend clicking through Alan Chin’s photos from Katrina and Iraq when you have minutes to digest them and then minutes to recover from them.

Here are the admission requirements of the Republican Party:
we take anyone
provided you swear an oath of allegiance
and agree to attack viciously our enemies
we will defend you until the end of time.
montag @ 188
anybody else a wee bit fatigued from the rapist/republican party crying “rape!” whenever they are held accountable by the victim? Like OJ claiming to be the abused spouse. gimme a break already.
I’m referring to idiot koolaid drinkers and their poisonous partisanship remarks…(rolling eyes)

The reason I said “our enemies” is that anyone who does not adhere to the Party Line, R or D, is an enemy.
There are lots of R’s today who do not adhere to the Party Line.
ROFL?? please, for Peter’s list and my edification.
Complete hypocrisy re: gay issues by an officially anti-gay Republican — and it’s widely known in Washington,D.C. that the guy is himself gay.
Now, that’s a cover-up…benefiting the GOP.
NBC Nightly News sure minimized it. Misunderstanding blah blah blah. Never mentioned his party affiliation either
Could some legal/law enforcement type please explain why we are only hearing about this now since the arrest was June 1th?
BlueStateRedHead @ 204
Thank you, I was just about to look for a link for information.

It’s good that you don’t suffer fools gladly. Sounds like your son is taking charge of things on his own, always nice to hear.

That’s funny and sad.
The first inkling this naive waif had of lost perspective inside DC was when reading Katherine Graham’s bio. She described her husband Phil’s increasingly disturbing behavior due to mental illness and everyone simply looked the other way and let the handlers take care of it. These things happen to valuable people…
I’m not saying it’s good or bad, necessary or unnecessary. But that was eyeopening reading for me.

I’ve liked Texas.
Never wanted to live there.
November 22, 1963 tainted it all for me.
WRT, dead police on motorcades. This is the 2nd incident with police motorcade in NM, the 2nd fatality for W, the first was a police officer in Hawaii motorcade in 2006, according to the news in NM. First incident in NM was not fatal for the police.
Hey, Christy was mentioned this morning:

From TPM..Idaho Values Alliance-
One of the tragic characteristics of the homosexual lifestyle is its emphasis on anonymous sex and multiple sexual partners. It is a little-acknowledged secret that many active homosexuals will have more than 1,000 sex partners over the course of a lifetime (the average among heterosexuals is seven – still six more than we were designed for). This sordid fact of homosexual life surfaced yesterday in an AP article yesterday that reports on the number of arrests police have made for indecent exposure and public sex acts in the restrooms at Atlanta’s airport, the busiest in the world. The increased restroom patrols, begun to apprehend luggage thieves, instead uncovered a rash of sex crimes. Airport restrooms have become so popular that men looking for anonymous sexual trysts with other men have advertised their airport availability on Craigslist. One such ad was from a man saying he was stuck at the airport for three hours and was looking for “discreet, quick action.”

Maybe the cop felt the pain of being in the sights of Larry craig (insistent type who won’t leave you alone) and just wanted it over with.
Steve-AR @ 238
heh
In Larry’s defense, maybe there were stocky black guys in the airport, and he was afraid of becoming a statistic…
new thread upstairs.
From the Idaho Values Alliance website. There is photo of Craig on the same page.

I think that’s the second motorcycle cop to die escorting the president. wonder if they get hazard pay?
TexBetsy @ 197
Betsy,
Have you had a workplace accommodations specialist come to look at your chair and desk setup, in light of your back problems? It might be that s/he can recommend a setup that will be better for your back. Such specialists really do exist, although they usually spend their time dealing with computer jockeys who have carpal tunnel syndrome.
Good luck!
Bob in HI
I see nothing remarkable here. This is just your typical love story,
Man meets undercover man, man falls in love, man offers to requite that love with undercover man, man learns he’s made a huge mistake, man shows undercover man his senate business card.
We’ve all heard it a million times.

Apparently Bu$h just drove on by the wreck, never even stopped to acknowledge that someone(in his own entourage) might be hurt, let alone dead.
TeddySanFran @ 136
The cop didn’t bust him simply for his “foot-tap”…he also mentioned that “Wide Stance” Craig played footsie with him, and reached down below the stall and made the “gesture”, looked through the cracks in the door, etc. Apparently he was uninterested in actually USING the bathroom for its intended purpose. While no “act” was committed he did confess to “lewd conduct”.
It’s hard to think that Craig didn’t think that he could have fought this if it was a “false charge”…instead he decided that it was likely easier to have it covered up. Fighting it in court would have definitely made the media. I wonder if phone calls were made to Gov. Pawlenty to suppress the report. That might explain why the sordid tale didn’t hit the news for almost two months.
This isn’t the first time that Larry Craig has been accused of involvement with gay sex. Apparenty he was hitting on male pages back in 1981, and possibly also involved in a cocaine ring.
There’s even video of Larry “Wide Stance” Craig’s adament denials then!
