As Think Progress notes, Brian Baird is now every wingnut's favorite Democrat:
Pro-war pundits and politicians quickly latched onto his comments. Baird reciprocated by granting interviews to three explicitly conservative outlets, helping to promote their agenda for an open-ended commitment in Iraq:
“A precipitous withdrawal at this point would probably be at least as big of a mistake as the initial invasion itself was.” [The Lars Larson Show, 8/21/07]
“My own belief is that we are making progress and that Ambassador Crocker, General Petraeus and the troops on the ground need time and breathing space.” [MSNBC’s Tucker, 8/21/07]
“A six-month extension of this current troop strength is worth the risk, even though I know it’s uncertain and I know we will lose more good lives and more money.” [National Review Online, 8/25/07]
Meanwhile, the Northwest Progressive Institute says that veterans in Baird's district are countering his robocalls with their own:
I'm an Iraq vet, and like many of you, I am a long time supporter of your Congressman, Brian Baird. One of the reasons I have supported him in the past has been his opposition to the war in Iraq, but I was completely disappointed in Congressman Baird when he returned from a tightly scripted trip to Iraq and announced that he has decided to oppose Democratic proposals to begin the withdrawal of our troops from that religious civil war.
The so called surge has been a complete failure. The surge was supposed to provide more security to make space for political reconciliation, but this has been the bloodiest summer in Iraq since the beginning of the war, and there is no political reconciliation in sight.
I mentioned in the comments last night that Congressman Baird was welcome to come on FDL and talk about why he was doing this, and as with all guests we'd make sure he was treated with respect (see the discussion with Jerry McNerney). But there's a bit too much at stake here right now to let some naif be exploited by the right to extend and expand the war without pushback, and it appears bloggers are not the only ones who feel that way.

fatal error…
Damn. Now I’m going back to read.
Fatal segue. The Bush fatal motorcade in NM today is the second fatal incident with motorcades and police, first was in Hawaii (2006). However, this is the second time there has been an incident with police in the motorcade in NM, the first was not fatal.
Jane, have you received any response from Baird’s office?
PeterK @ 10
Nothing that we do here can fit that definition, thank the good Dog…
Our own version of Catch22 right there.
“My own belief is that we are making progress and that Ambassador Crocker, General Petraeus and the troops on the ground need time and breathing space.” [MSNBC’s Tucker, 8/21/07]
This sounds like war addiction to me. “Gee just give me another loan and I’ll get it together, honest.”
I’m soooo glad war veterans are sounding off. They are the only credible war experts.

I don’t care that Christy was on TV or whatever today.
I care that Christy offers up good thinking.
Screw MSM as a standard for judging quality of ideas.
Emptywheel is back
OT, except that gonzo gonzo is never OT:
The AP has just posted a reasonable account of his ‘troubles’ or should we say crimes; meanwhile the NYT keeps the president’s charge of unfairness as their second headline.
and on the NYT and Craig (not)
and no Craig as yet. except the one in the new movie, The golden compass.

I apologize. Just a rush of anger. Not at you.
sorry for the repeat, trying to learn how to edit after the fact. *sigh*
These sound like the words of an addict. He knows this is bad, won’t work, but wants to do it anyway. It could be nicotine, alcohol, cocaine. In this case it’s war.
I see do-si-do beat me to this thought.
On a previous thread there was a request for the first commenters to pop back down and mention “new thread”. I’m doing it nw, but it’s a nice think, m’kay?
Mr. Baird is a disappointment. McNerney also. What is with these guys?

I have long wondered why it is so f’ing imperative to keep the war going, keep it going, keep it going, yeah yeah yeah, no matter what info comes in, no matter how it’s going…it’s too unreal.
What are the objectives? There are never anything other than generalities and abstractions offered.
I think it’s a war pigs dopamine level thing.

OT:
Russell Shaw: If Alberto Gonzales Wrote This Letter To Rove, He Might Still Have His Job
from The Full Feed from HuffingtonPost.com by Russell Shaw
Karl, I am in receipt of your most recent memo.
I think I understand what you are asking, but I wanted to be doubly sure.
I take the tone of your conversation, and some of the specific suggestions you’ve proposed, as indicating that you want me to sign off on the firings of the nine U.S. Attorneys whose names I see here on this list. And I do respect the candor with which you’ve mentioned that these personnel actions have been approved by the highest levels of the Administration to which we loyally serve.
Karl, although you accurately note that I, as well as the U.S. Attorneys cited on this list serve at the pleasure and discretion of the President of the United States, I cite the overarching mission of my office as being the Attorney General for the people of America.
I believe the Attorney General’s office and the U.S. Attorneys who serve us so ably, must be free of political bias and taint. Many of my predecessors, of both parties, have aspired to this ideal in word and in deed. That is the oath of office I took, and aspire to fulfill as long as I hold office.
Accordingly, Karl, I must respectfully decline to approve and execute the personnel actions you have requested.
All The Best,
Alberto
CTuttle @ 37
I’m always happy when traditions are honored! You know, I read your handle as “Zed Nurse”!
I wonder what they’ve got on this guy. He’s flipped entirely too smoothly and become entirely too useful for NSA intercepts not to have played a role.
Perhaps these characters are budding little Liebermans. Look at what Mr. Lieberman gets away with.

just the standard action shots from the beefy pro-war white pols’ monthly orgy.
The only wide stance that is acceptable in my house is the very honorable Senator Jim Webb staring down a BushBot during a filibuster.
TexBetsy @ 33
Right. Too bad there is no longer a draft. That is one of the biggest differences between this war and Vietnam, in terms of domestic political pressure to end it. IMHO, it should be reinstituted. If you are willing to go to war, the sacrifice should be shared.
WaPo has the Craig story now and links to Mike Rogers’ website. Spreading super fast like Craig with wide leg spread.
what a thing to aspire to
I’m interested in how folks thought the McNerny thread went. I read through it afterward and although there were some OT questions, most of the commenters were respectful and on point. I can understand that it is hard to keep up with raging FDL commenters, and appreciated his willingness to stay for extra time, but ultimately felt he did not really answer anything specifically. I think he planned to take the questions and look at them over the weekend; do we know how he plans to follow up?
Also, when we have an opportunity like that maybe it would be a good idea to have the subject dictate responses to a fast typist in an effort to maximize the time and bandwith.
it seems rep baird has made his peace with the neocons… the pay is so much better…do you think he’ll come to the lake to answer questions from us? i dont think so…
Brian Baird gave a 36-minute long interview on our local progressive talk radio station, KPOJ’s Morning Show, this morning. Here is a URL where you can find the podcast and listen. He was on during the 7-8 am hour today.
http://www.620kpoj.com/cc-common/podcast.html
I am going to Baird’s town hall tonight. I will let you know what I learn.
At what point isn’t it a whole lot easier just to say “I like men”
PeterK @ 46
I used to be for a draft to bring this war to an end. Now I’m convinced a draft would only mean E.S.C.A.L.A.T.I.O.N.

ROFL!! *g*
zennurse @ 49
Good idea re the typist.
What bothered me (reading his posts afterwards) was the constant repetition of “we can’t do anything without a veto-proof majority”. This is complete BS. All they have to do is send W a funding bill with deadlines in it two or three times, and he will be up against a wall–if he vetoes it, the funding will run out. A simple majority is enough for that, no?
I voted for Baird in two elections here in my home district. Now I feel more and more like a tool. I really wish Baird would give me SOME reason to continue to support him.
I cant make his Vancouver Town Meeting today, but I hope to make it to Longview tomorrow to speak with him.
Here is the meeting info. Meet us there if you can!

He didn’t want to plead guilty - his little head made him do it.

Elliott @ 53
Well it’s too late for a draft now, but I don’t agree. The strong opposition to Vietnam was much more widespread and deeper (imagine that you had a son or close relative in Iraq, for those of you who don’t). Now we have maybe one or two members of Congress with children over there. These things really make a difference, blood is much thicker than talk.
PeterK at 56
Here’s what McNerney’s argument leads to:
Dem majorities in both houses of Congress.
Hillary as president.
100,000 plus American troops in Iraq.
Anyone who disagrees, please paint a different picture.
My baby’s got those veto-proof majority war sick blues.
Didn’t we say no to Pombo, Jerry?
actually Craig was on an anti-terror mission, a la Austin Powers. “who does # 2 work for?”
(the infamous bathroom scene here)
Jonathan @ 62
That’s more or less what W wants too. At least the “leave the war for the Dems to sort out” part. McNerny doesn’t think very hard, it seems.
Smgumby @ 58
Hey, don’t be so ######### yourself! If he’s been representing your views up to this point, but has only stumbled on this very important issue only recently, you are officially not a tool.
GOPers are very very good at razzle dazzle and scripts. Contrast journalists’ visits to Gitmo vs. the lawyers who represent detainees. Verrry different experiences. so for Baird to fall under the spell is disappointing but also a desired outcome for those holding the script.
JMHO
Just heard Turley saying,”Many Republican would have liked to have dropped Gonzo from a great height.” “Hard to do worse (than Gonzales)”.
replay of On Point from earlier today.
Going to listen, I love Turley but the gooper defender is an ass.
Why did the Craig misdemeanor come to light today? The news media had poor Alberto being dragged through the mud and now this. Who benefits from this now?
Not only do I have to fight the GOP, I have to fight more than a few in my own party. This is getting old.
zennurse @ 67
I listened to our local public radio and the R who served Reagan and Bush I was also an ass. Claimed that if DOJ had just said hey we messed up let’s keep it in the family, nothing messy would have occurred. Blamed McNulty for all the misspeaking. Attacked a caller for saying torture took place at Gitmo “how do you know that?” etc etc. really no shame ever.
I was really impressed with the level of knowledge (and the attendant disgust) of the callers.
AZ Matt @ 53
His Mom taught not to speak with his mouth full.
Oops. Maybe that was a bit late-nightie.
JPL @ 68
I think it benefits Craig. He knew it was coming to light so he put it on the day that Gonzales is making nonstop news.

I haven’t seen a tabetic gait in years.
Wonder what Olbermann will have to say about all this ‘bad judgement’.
BTW I love Turley too!

Hey. Larry Craig’s all right.
Jesus will pardon him.
His wife will pardon him.
He’ll be OK.
AZ Matt @ 53
Heh heh heh heh! Lets see, what is more likely,
A) A long time US Senator is so naive and inexperienced that, two months after his arrest on a sexual misconduct charge, he decided to plead guilty without a lawyer; or
B) A long time US Senator thought he might could keep his pathetic career alive by trying to slide this by quietly with the help of the local GOP governor and local GOP officials and thought he had it worked out?
bmaz @ 77
Maybe he should have followed Florida Perv’s lead and pled bulimia?
i say good riddance to all the bad repug rubbish - yet the msm still clings to repug TPs…1 chyron reads gonzalez dragged through the mud! what!!
JQ Public may not care what party Craig belongs too. Therein may lie the rub.
When Larry gave the cop his business card, did he wink?
Hmmm…the Castro rumors persist:

OT - NBC Wins Sunday Prime Despite Weak Olbermann Pre-Game. Fox, a frequent Sunday leader, finishes fourth.
NBC won the 18-49 demo Sunday night with its coverage of the preseason intrastate rivalry between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles. However, its tryout of Keith Olbermann in a pre-game edition of his MSNBC Countdown show was last among the Big Four in the 8-9 time period with a 1.3. NBC averaged a 2.7 rating/8 share in the demo for the night.

Perhaps a lot of this could be attributed to the fact that KO was not on during that time period in all of the Western United States, and instead was on 4 hours later?
And what about the problems of the next American troop blinded and with his hands blown off by a roadside bomb while staying on, “helping an Iraqi to solve his problem,” you dumbshit?

how many ways can it be repeated…. repugs are uhhh lemmee think….hmmm HYPOCRITES!!!
Eureka Springs @ 27
These canned Iraq visits need to be countered. Perhaps someone with a military background (Jim Webb comes to mind) needs to stand up and demand that these little-known congressmens’ Iraq junkets include a visit to a front-line medical facility. They needs to see the gore, smell the blood, hear the screams and whimpers of the wounded and dying because, if they are prepared to blithely suggest that it’s sad but OK to “lose more good lives” they should know exactly what the real, human costs are.
carolyn urban @ 19

Is that the airline he was waiting for?
From wiki:
In other words, he has zero foreign policy experience. Most of us here probably know more about Iraq than he does.
Baird also has a PhD in clinical psychology. A pity he knows so little about pathological dumbassery.

McNerney refused repeated questions about this very point. One of the reasons I supported him is because I didn’t think he would act this way once elected.
LS @ 96
you know, a few years back we had a slew of Chinese “illegals” in the county prison. The one thing they could do worthwhile during the day was make paper sculptures, which they could sell. But instead of encouraging this creative activity, the warden just made it impossible for them to waste perfectly good plain paper.
a cryin’ shame.
From LS’s article at 96:
The settlement is the result of extensive litigation and mediation in consolidated lawsuits filed earlier this year against Michael Chertoff, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and six officials from ICE on behalf of 26 immigrant children.
Loo Hoo. @ 105
Their cruelty is sickening.
LS @ 106
I hope they do put Chertoff up for confirmation, we could use the catharsis.
CTuttle @ 99
G’day Chikka. I’m sorry but I don’t know what you’re referring to.
A new report on Katrina came out today, too.
“The President says he’s written a ‘big check’ for the Gulf Coast, but for the over 80,000 families still in FEMA trailers, they must be wondering if the check bounced,” says Jeffrey Buchanan of the RFK Memorial Center for Human Rights and co-author of the special report.
I just got home and saw there’s another republican perv. I wonder what the rest of the world is thinking. Hope they understand that this is not typical American behavior…
Republics will not say much about Larry Craig. He will be “cured” the Republic way: A week or so of alleged intense prayer with some conservative christian televangelist. However, if Craig were a Democrat, the noise from the right would be intense.
End of thread.

I’ve thought a bit about the McNerney visit. He’s stepped inside the congressional machine now, the only way he sees to get out of Iraq is by passing veto-proof legislation. To do that he has to convince Republicans to defy their Party.
We’re not inside the congressional machine. We know Republicans are unlikely to do that and, even if they did, Bushy will add a signing statement saying “This law does not apply on any day ending with the letter “y”.” McNerney seems incapable to thinking outside the congressional box.
CTuttle @ 113
Ah, now I remember, just didn’t know her name.
The NYT finally has the Craig story up but it is on their Washington page and under News from AP and Reuters. The feed is brief story from Reuters.
I agree with those who have noted that the NYT is being especially slow on this.
turns out it really was a silly misunderstanding: he misheard the PA announcement for the flight boarding at Gate 86, mistaking it for Gay Date y Sex.

BushCo’s objective is not only to leave the war for the Dems to sort out, but to leave it for them in a way that their choices are sharply constrained, with all alternatives to remaining in Iraq having very bad consequences of one kind or another. In other words, to set up the Republicans in 2010 with lots to blame the Democrats for. That is, assuming that he really intends to leave office.

Baird simply doesn’t know what to do, and is risk-averse with respect to the nation. I don’t think he is doing this for himself. The problem is that alot of our Congresscritters are not particularly deep thinkers, and they have to take advice where they can find it. That advice is coming out of the consensus view in DC that we have an imperial mission in the middle east. Bush screwed it up, but that doesn’t meant we don’t have to do it (from their point of view). When you are wet behind the ears and out of the boondocks, it’s hard to take an independent stand unless you have independent understanding, which few of our reps do.
This will play out on the ground in withdrawal under defeat or threat of defeat. Case closed. Baird should have a talk with the the ex-marine rep from Johnstown PA, who knows what’s he’s talking about because he’s been there.
dO thE slaG
That session with Jerry McNerney was a real bust, with the Congressman evading all of the real questions.
It clearly revealed to me why Congress has such dismal ratings (even lower than Bush’s)
I hope in the future you can change the format to one where you field questions in advance from bloggers and then have a couple of people select questions to ask for a Q&A session.
AZ Matt @ 46
Here’s another interesting link. Larry Craig on video denying that he has solicited Congressional Pages…back in 1981! This was the same scandal that caused the censure of two other Congressmen. The report also implies he was somehow tied to a Cocaine ring, as well.
http://www.leechvideo.com/video/view88749.html
I bet that Craig was hypocritical enough to vote for the censure of his fellow Congressman…and later voted “Aye” when Clinton was impeached. The Republican mantra ” Tell lies and use hypocrisy to power!
Cozumel @ 119
“To spend more time with his family”, I’m sure.
