As we approach the second anniversary of Hurricaine Katrina, it’s great that Barack Obama has released as substantive plan to rebuild New Orleans, which includes measures to give the jobs to New Orleans residents and not to the corporations who are presently on the receiving end of BushCo. largesse. John Edwards has also made plans for New Orleans a pillar of his campaign, and it demostrates how both candidates would be substantively different from the present incompetent and apathetic regime.
It’s worth noting, however, that Joe Lieberman, as head of the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, promised to investigate the government’s response to Hurricaine Katrina. From January of 2006, when Joe was running for office:
The White House is dodging questions about Hurricane Katrina response and has instructed other agencies to join it in fending off investigators, Sen. Joseph Lieberman said on Tuesday. The White House denies the allegations.
Lieberman went so far as to suggest that the Department of Homeland Security is trying to kill the investigation.
“My staff believes that DHS has engaged in a conscious strategy of slow-walking our investigation in the hope that we would run out of time to follow the investigation’s natural progression to where it leads,” Lieberman said. “At this point, I cannot disagree.”
The Connecticut senator, who is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, further said no real reason is being given for the administration’s reticence.
“There’s been no assertion of executive privilege, just a refusal to answer,” Lieberman said. “I have been told by my staff that almost every question our staff has asked federal agency witnesses regarding conversations with or involvement of the White House has been met with a response that they could not answer on direction of the White House.”
And once Lieberman was re-elected with no small amount of help from the GOP?
Bush’s Best Democratic Buddy Joe Lieberman gives the president a pass on Katrina.
Jan. 11, 2007 – Sen. Joe Lieberman, the only Democrat to endorse President Bush’s new plan for Iraq, has quietly backed away from his pre-election demands that the White House turn over potentially embarrassing documents relating to its handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans.
Lieberman’s reversal underscores the new role that he is seeking to play in the Senate as the leading apostle of bipartisanship, especially on national-security issues. On Wednesday night, Bush conspicuously cited Lieberman’s advice as being the inspiration for creating a new “bipartisan working group” on Capitol Hill that he said will “help us come together across party lines to win the war on terror.”
(As a side note, I think the above paragraph is a pretty clear demonstration of the fact that when Joe says “bipartisan” what he really means is “Karl Rove’s bitch.” Because nobody wants to bring the troops home more than Joe, you know.)
But since so many of our Democratic 08 candidates are current or former members of the Senate, maybe they would like to prod their colleague Joe about his promise to give residents of New Orleans an explanation for the government’s mishandling of the disaster and what happened to their lives?
Also in Katrina news — the Color of Change folks are launching their Voices from the Gulf project. Have a look, it’s an impressive project that seeks to document the experiences of Katrina survivors in their own words.

hi Jane!
I got yer estrogen moment, righthere.
Does anyone know what network Keith will be on (NBC?)and what time PST?
Hi Jane.
Jane,
Tell them to be nice.
Oh, that’s right.
Look on the Sunny Side….
tbsa @ 4
Does anyone know what network Keith will be on (NBC?)and what time PST?
He’s on right now – probably everywhere – NBC.
(walking away cursing CT)
tbsa @ 4
NBC, unfortunately, some aren’t airing it, for instance here in Hawaii…!!! :-(
jayt @ 7
He’s on right now – probably everywhere – NBC.
(walking away cursing CT)
:P
I like FDL.
It’s like being in high school.
Some really smart people.
Some outcasts.
Etc.
Is GWB gonna show up in New Orleans? Thought I read that somewhere – or I could be hallucinating – again.
(Just kidding, CT)
Lieberman’s a disgusting and smelly pile- unfortunately- he’ll be around for five more years.
jayt @ 7
He’s on right now – probably everywhere – NBC.
(walking away cursing CT)
Not in my city, there is a fucking infomercial on….
Jonathan @ 10
i hated high school (although not as much as joe lieberman).
i love FDL.
I honestly don’t know that we can call ourselves a civilized nation when two years later, literally nothing has been done to rebuild New Orleans.
Jonathan @ 10
I like FDL.
It’s like being in high school.
Some really smart people.
Some outcasts.
Etc.
And the inferiority complex kicks in and I start to wonder…
Hi y’all!
I am glad people are talking about Katrina again, but they need to start fixing MS & LA.
FYI, a poster at Daily Kos is live-blogging tonight’s Countdown…
Jane!
Hi pups!
Selise,
In which field is your engineering degree?
Also: Sincere congrats. Even today, relatively few women graduate from top engineering schools.
KO is smokin’! No need to worry about NBC muzzling him. It’s just like any old Countdown — terrific.
Countdown is running post-game here, at 9pm in Phoenix.
jayt @ 7
He’s on right now – probably everywhere – NBC.
(walking away cursing CT)
Well, apparently not in Hawaii.
Bob in HI
alexandriacynic @ 21
But a bunch of the oddball is repeats.
alexandriacynic @ 21
It’s a treat for me, I don’t usually get to watch Countdown
SnarKassandra @ 24
Think of as the “best of Oddball”, he’s playing to a whole new audience.
-GSD
when will harry read joe liarman the riot act? joe has all but left the building with no consequences
Cassie,
Take a deep drink of thinkers from 1600 – 1970.
Take a shallow drink of thinkers since.
Jonathan @ 28
I started thinking in 1992.
Jonathan @ 20
thanks but i didn’t go cal tech or somthing like that. chem e, class of ‘82, case institute of technology (now cwru). my first job was in a group of engineers that had never included a woman – indeed, i don’t think any of them had worked with a woman as a peer. it was an interesting experience – had to work 2x as hard as the guys and learn to swear “like a sailor”, but mostly i did really like it.
If there are people in this country who need to watch KO it’s this city full of bush boot licker’s. I can’t believe they’d rather air paid programing.
Keeping my fingers crossed they’ll air it after the game. Unfrikinbelievable!
I was amazed when my redneck red-state brother was visiting he knew who Keith was because of his radio show and his sports newscasting. He cheerfully watched Countdown with us and either thought is was okay if a sports guy made those liberal comments, or just didn’t get the difference. My brother is a good man, but not the brightest bulb. He even laughed several times as Keith was making cracks about King George and Karl Rove.
selise @ 30
Chem E? You must be REALLY smart. I was an EE. Always thought Chem E’s really had great brains.
Millineryman @ 5
Hi Millinearyman!
Shorter Junya on Jowls: “Ah lahk to pinch his cheeks. Heel Jowls. Now show folks how ya can rollover.”
Joe Lieberman will get the bottom of the Bush administration’s ‘irregularities’ during Hurrican Katrina when…Well, you know…
;>)
OK luddites, go to TV Guide online. select TV Shows Listings and type in your zip code. It will give you a choice of your “providers” pick on and look at the NBC listings. It says that KO is on at 10 pm in LA.
My NBC local afiliate is out of Springfield, MO.. the buckle in the bible belt.. So I am a bit surprised to see Countdown on here.
bobschacht @ 23
Nor is there any sight of KO on the central CA coast. Damn! :~(
KO has the ultra-feeble Mo Rocca on now. Stupid, stupid move.
OTOH, while avoiding this dreck, I found the following headline: [National Guard Cheers at Call for Withdrawal from Iraq]
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories…..4570.shtml
Weak-kneed Democrats, are you listening?
Uh…firepups?
Sorry for the really dumb question, but is anyone watching the SF ay station with KO?
If so, could you tell me what it is?
(My TV is mostly a platform for feline gymnastics….)
Jonathan @ 33
hell no! never could have done EE, i though my circuits course was insane (i still remember it!). guess it’s just how our minds work. always liked chemistry. and i though thermo was great.
oh shit, are any of you ever going to talk with me ever again?
OT: new post on my blog.
darkblack @ 36
*snicker – cough – snort*
raven @ 37
Philly NBC isn’t showing Countdown post-game either.
selise @ 42
Hell, you guys should have been in those Recreation Admin courses, stone bitches!
this is my first time watching KO’s countdown (no cable here). it’s like a cross between real news and the daily show. is this typical? if so, i can see why it’s so popular.
I do love the Reggie Bush/Peyton Manning “competing practical jokes” commercial, though [on KO].
Wow. I figured commenting about “Countdown” would be OT, but since it seems to be water cooler night, I think it’s really great that they have KO leading up to the NFL. It’s a real crossover dream, isn’t it?
Hi Jane!
need to get some supper back in a 30min or so – type amongst yourselves pups… son cooked hope its good lol
selise @ 42
selise, I’ve always liked chemistry and I’ll always like you! engineers are people, too.
selise @ 42
Understanding thermo and statistical mechanics is key to understanding the universe in which we live.
raven @ 37
I live in Central California. Teevee Guide says it should be in now.
Jonathan @ 52
Or at least thinking you do!
tbsa @ 53
and?
NBC web site reports KO west coast broadcast will be delayed to 10 PM after the game. WTF? At least we left coasters will get to see his show then.
MSM is so lame and infuriating.
GSD @ 26
He usually does an “Oddball of the month” at the end of each month anyway.
selise @ 47
Same as it ever was.
selise @ 42
Of course! Case Western is a notable science school, my sister has her master’s in chemistry!
Elliott @ 51
thank you. but i’m only a recovering engineer – only did it for 10 years before going to grad school and changing fields.
newspaperbrat @ 56
Here it started 10 min late cause they did a little Texas news first.
selise @ 60
Some call me an engineer. I call myself an artist.
NPB, probably has to do with time zones.. I am just glad 60 mins is a rerun.. so KO might have a good chance at some decent ratings in this time slot.
Wait wait, isn’t the topic here what a scumbag Joe is?
Hey, raven.
Not dinky dau.
You souveneir me this?
Same, same GI.
Over.
selise @ 47
Exactly, and his special comments are blistering diatribes against Shrubco!!! Priceless…!!!
The inestimable journeywoman blogger Scout, from the fantastico blog First-Draft.com, has had a great idea regarding El Chimperador’s visit to NOLA later thees week.
Inspired by a commenter from story Scout linked:
Scout goes on:
Flag_upside_down (just peecture)
!El Gato Negro! agrees that solidarity weeth NOLA bloggers ees almost the least we can do.
Por favor, consider Scout’s proposal to post an upside down flag on jour blog next week, but especially on Wednesday, the 2nd anniversary of the loss of an American city due to criminal negligence.
Gracias.
Eureka Springs @ 63
sangemon @ 49
Hi sangemom!
Keith’s used up his quota of unfunny jokers, IMHO.
raven @ 64
Well gee. Everyone knows that.
((((((((((EUREKA SPRINGS!))))))))))
Jonathan @ 65
Can do, 10,000 pi or 50 cent MPC.
Rust LimpBalls WPITW for claiming Dems want to get out of Iraq and into Darfur because Blacks vote D.
Rut ro, editing problems, zin loi mods.
KO just called comedienne Rush Limpbag NUTS on NBC
BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA
LMAO
dakine01 @ 73
Yep. That one goes right to Limpballs heart. He had been on the football talking heads line-up a few years back until he started blathering racist talk.
I betcha a lot African-Americans saw Keith for the first time tonight and they get to see and hear how much of a racist loser Limpballs is again.
Bang, pow.
-GSD
Boo Yay!
KO, uncut and unedited on NETWORK TV!
Stick it to THE MAN! LOL
Jane Hamsher @ 69
True dat. And ten minutes on Nicole Ritchie was disappointing, but he’s doing his show. There. Before the NFL. On NBC. C’mon. Props are deserved.
newspaperbrat @ 56
npb, thanks for finding that.
does nbc come in on channel 11 where you are? here in sf, I can’t even get a signal on ch 11.
(KQED has a lovely presentation on sudden oak death fungus on channel 9, however)
dakine01 @ 73
A perfect choice for tonight!
Limbaugh resigns from NFL show
dakine01 @ 73
What a disgusting creep second only to O’Reilly’s demagoguing on publicly owned airwaves.
Why? Doesn’t everyone get MSNBC who gets cable?
SnarKassandra @ 82
Oh no, there are plenty of places that don’t. It’s also common for it not to be on on hotel rooms. . .swine.
dakine01 @ 73
True to form, it doesn’t surprise me, it’s usually a battle between Billo and Rush for the WPITW gold…
kirk murphy @ 79
Channel six here in the sticks aka dirtyharryville.
OK, Folks, I’d like to talk about Katrina and its aftermath. I’m a big believer in the thought that when government really and truly wants to do something, and do it in a certain way, that’s how it gets done. I feel that the incompetence of the Bush Administration (at all levels) basically is evidence of their interest in crippling the government – by failing us in seemingly every circumstance where they have had major control, what they are saying is, “See, there is no way you should expect government to handle this sort of thing – see how poor we are at it? It’s better to put this sort of thing in the hands of private interests because they are soooo good at getting things done.” But, as we have seen and discussed in a couple of other threads, private interests are not very good at getting things done and generally only do a good job at extracting the maximum number of taxpayer dollars to do a mediocre job. While they are doing this, the Bush Administration has sucked the very life out of federal agencies (whether it is Emergency Management or the Department of Justice) — it will take probably the next couple of decades to stop the course of this falling apart ship, regroup, and start building again. And in the meantime, situations like New Orleans will just get worse, I’m afraid.
SnarKassandra @ 82
Not everyone gets cable.
raven,
No, no.
No mpc.
On T, Joe Liebermans denial of oversight as chair of the HS committee may vey well have helped Senator Landrieu and Gov Blanco lose their seats and turn LA into a republican state on the political map.. Thanks for that, Joe.
SnarKassandra @ 82
Usually it’s on a higher premium tier. Not ‘basic cable’ like Fixed News
newspaperbrat @ 81
BillO was the silver on WPITW for using an MSNBC study of journalists’ political donation to trash ALL journos as Libruls. KO pointed out that the number of journos who had given political donations amounted to 1/10 ot 1 per cent of all journos in the country.
So he was able to get the regulars all covered on prime time.
Mo Rocca is never funny. I wish Keith would use someone else.
Mo Caca.
-GSD
Jonathan @ 88
10 cent greenback?
But Why say African Americans?
Watching Keith, and writing to NBC afterwards to suggest that they let him do the news on the network.
Eureka Springs @ 89
How is it that LIEberman is chair of ANYTHING?
KO just apologized for not being on NOW on the West Coast.
sangemon @ 87
We cancelled the cable a year ago but they never came and climbed up on the pole to unhook it so it is still on.
Important note. First responders to St. Bernard Parish were Canadian Mounties–and they were five days in coming.
Maybe they rode their horses. Tall ones.
SnarKassandra @ 82
does anyone off hand know the percentage of usa households who have cable?
SnarKassandra @ 94
Because of football, not just A-A folks but lot’s of people who don’t normally watch KO. I, however, am not sure I agree. KO is, and was, a primp sports guy.
sangemon @ 96
I keep asking Harry Reid that very question, but I have NEVER received a response.
Oilfieldguy @ 99
Was their name Dudley?
SnarKassandra @ 94
I am figuring on football watching demographics Cassie. It is just another reinforcing of Rush as a racist demagogue.
-GSD
Lindy @ 95
that’s a good idea!
Brian Williams talks too slow anyway.
raven,
What thinks you of those who haven’t gone through war?
n a conference call with reporters Wednesday afternoon, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann said he is anchoring the special edition of Countdown Sunday on NBC “with an assumption that this is a one-shot deal.”
He added that he could not rule out a similar arrangement in the future, but it would be dependent on the success and reception of Sunday’s show with affiliates and viewers.
http://www.broadcastingcable.c…..?rssid=193
Is that a good thing?
Elliott @ 97
How cool of him to apologize for his masters – what is that Jazz age saying?
Oh yeah – ‘Class will out.’
(((((KO)))))!
Jonathan @ 106
They’s lucky. I wish not another soul would ever have to.
Lindy @ 95
I bet he’d have to stop throwing his papers on the floor.
SnarKassandra @ 111
But he did it!
sangemon @ 96
Harry Reid doing the rope a dope.
selise @ 100
These guys are saying 80%. I’m not sure I buy that.
Yep. Canadian Mounties arrived to rescue Americans while G.W. Shitheel was stroking a guitar neck.

I’ve been thinking about what it would have been like to drive a truck from Long Binh through III and IV Corps in 1967-68.
I miss KO all the time, and I live in crappy cable-supplied motel rooms.
GSD @ 115
that’s just sad
about US, I mean.
selise @ 100
Until this year, the S.Carolina hotel we vacation in did not get MSNBC. It wasn’t a lack of cable. We got HBO and every imaginable station. Just not MSNBC. That changed in 2007. Don’t know why they didn’t get it before, don’t know why they get it now. But, it may explain KO’s numbers compared to BOR’s.
Just watched KO..first Network TV that I have watched for a long time. It was an hour of ads with a little of Keith thrown in.
sangemon @ 114
wow. if true, that’s amazing. here, i think, the lowest price for basic is something like $50/mo.
selise @ 121
Here a lot of people in houses get satellite, but they don’t have it in apts.
Oilfieldguy @ 117
OFG..seems like it’s been awhile
Why are republicans talking about building a border fence when New Orleans hasn’t been fixed? Any why aren’t the democrats calling them out on it?
There was a time I figured Mr. Lieberman was just a cheap blackmailer. I was wrong. Lieberman is an expensive blackmailer. And Mr. Reid is the bagman. I am still smarting over the swindle of Ned Lamont by Lieberman and the Democrats. I hope Mr. Lamont runs for office again.
I met Al Franken at the State Fair today. Wow.
I asked him if he was aware of FDL. He wasn’t, but asked me to send him info. This guy would be perfect for a sitdown with everyone here.
I admit to have always liked the man because of his unabashed love of the Grateful Dead. I mentioned it to him and his face lit up in a huge smile.
But for whatever reason, the man screams electability and competence. He is one of us. He needs to be Minnesota’s Senator next year.
I’ll be working to get him elected starting now.
solai @ 119
Once again, MSNBC is on a Premium Tier. You (they) have to pay EXTRA for it ; )
SnarKassandra @ 122
I think that they must be counting satellite transmission as part of that 80%.
Heckuva job Brownie must’ve deputized and dispatched the Canadians, don’cha know.
Of course under the direction of the ever concerned Joe Lieberman.
Hi Balrog. How’s the Balbaby?
demi @ 3
Heh. Classic. I think that deserves to be cross-stitched on a pillow.
Balrog @ 126
get out! he didn’t know about fdl?!!
plus, thanks for getting Franken into the Senate for us.
Jonathan @ 116
We’d wait at the Phu Tho race track before dawn so Marvin the ARVN could sweep the road. By the time we got to Tan An the french bread sellers would have the fresh hot loaves out to sell us when traffic slowed before the bridge. This guys website shows great shots of the whole run. We’d wait again right up from Dong Tam, 9th ID HQ. Sometimes they’d blow the road and we’d have to hunker down in the ditch while the flyboys pounded the tree line and the engineers rebuilt the dirt road.
Balrog @ 126
Al Franken is honest and has nothing to lose.
I’d vote for him.
Cozumel @ 127
More than they have to pay for CNN, FoxNews, HBO etc?
Jonathan @ 116
I’ve been blessed to serve 20 years in the Army, 1985-2005, and I never had to fire a shot in anger…! I seriously lucked out during GW I, by serving in Korea, then, assigned to train up troops for Shrub’s fiasco!!!
Just before KO, I watched the Nat. Geographic special on Katrina. Flashbacks.
SnarKassandra @ 130
He’s a good baby. Reminds me a lot of me.
Steve-AR @ 123
Yeah, been on injured reserves…minor head wound…fifteen stitches. Required heavy doses of hooch and fishing for rehab.
dakine01 @ 73
Speaking of sports, racism and Limbaugh, recall that Rush was banned from sports television because of his racist comments. (Also I have heard that oxycontin stuff, brings out the meaness in a person.)
____________
Limbaugh said on Thursday he stepped down late Wednesday from the show “Sunday NFL Countdown” to protect the network from the uproar caused by his statement that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.
At the convention Limbaugh did not directly address questions about his name being linked by law enforcement sources to an investigation into a black market drug ring in Palm Beach County, Florida.
The sources said Thursday that authorities are looking into the illegal sales of prescription drugs OxyContin and hydrocodone.

Some cable systems have Basic Cable, Extended/Expanded Basic, Premium/Digital Tier, and Pay/Movie Channels. I have seen MSNBC on each of the first three groupings.
I liked Al Franken all the way back when he was on SNL.
When he wrote Rush Limbaugh is a BFI it was great. Still laugh out loud funny.
I got see him do a live show in Brattleborough VT last year and had breakfast with him.
I agree, he’s smart, compassionate and would fill in Paul Wellstones’s old shoes quite well.
Plus I want to see Norm Coleman go down in a bad way.

Saw some war veterans missing limbs begging on the sidewalks of Saigon.
All the young Vietnamese women and men speak good English.
Has anyone seen a good poll lately comparing the Republicans to the Democrats?
Cozumel @ 141
Apparently, I’m not being clear. The SC hotel we stayed at had all the major channels except MSNBC. They had CNN, FoxNews, 50 other channels including HBO. The only one missing was MSNBC. Are you saying that MSNBC charges more than Fox and CNN? Because, I was concerned that it was a form of censorship. And when it appeared in 2007, I was relieved. And, it made me wonder how many others get Fox but not MSNBC.
Please enlighten.
raven,
just a flesh wound. It will be a big ugly scar though, since I have no hair, and it resembles a horseshoe in both size and shape. Basically, my scalp flapped forward, revealing my skull. Docs demanded a catscan, which I tried to refuse.

Viewership for any cable channel is tiny compared to broadcast. That’s why the argument that the Democrats have to go on Fox to reach “Fox viewers” is so bogus.
Oilfieldguy @ 165

Most I’ve seen offer MSNBC on a Premium Tier, above Basic. Fox and Hotels are a whole nother’ can o worms.
GATO! I love the upside down flag idea. Very clever, and will make great shots in all of the newpapers and news magazines. Um, the ones that dare.
Great post, and sorry if someone else has mentioned this, but our “gal” Susan Collins also is to blame on this, and this SHOULD become an issue in her re-election campaign particularly considering how Yankee Mainers are with their ethics and financing.
Balrog @ 126
Al Franken is one of my heros. I’ve read two of his books, Rush Limbaugh is a Big, Fat Idiot and The Truth, with Jokes. Both were very good, but the second one really brought me up to speed on contemporary politics, e.g., I’d barely heard of Jack Abramoff when that book came out, and reading it was like reading the blogs and newspapers six-months early.
That guy is extremely well informed and eloquent in a way that communicates with ordinary citizens.
Jonathan @ 20
I have a niece who has demonstrated writing and music skills, who was valedictorian in her class. But somehow she declared that she wanted to go to an engineering school– I think she heard they earn more money. I don’t see it. But she chose Swarthmore, which I think is good. My advice to her was not to commit to a major too early, give herself a chance to try out engineering skills *and* other things, especially in her first two years.
Any suggestions?

I am a big Obama fan but it is BS to think that the barrier islands and wetlands at the mouth of the Mississippi can be rebuilt by 2011, which as far as I understand is a requirement to protect NO from a Cat 5 storm. The levees can’t do it alone. It’s a huge task that will take decades.
So, in the interim, are we going to rebuild the below sea-level areas and encourage people to move there? where they can be flooded and killed again?
The problem in NO is timing. Any plan which suggests that we below sea-level areas should be rebuilt immediately is nonsense. And since floodproofing the area will take far beyond 2011, what do we do?
Alas, Obama is not making sense here. Below sea-level parts of NO should NOT be rebuilt until the floodproofing is in place and that will take many years even if we started tomorrow.
I missed K.O. How did he do?

Apology accepted with great reluctance. ;-)

FWIW, If your niece thinks she might want to study engineering, encourage her to enter a good engineering college.
The first 2 years of study will be largely math and physics.
If she likes that, she’ll be OK for engineering.
If she doesn’t, nothing lost.
solai @ 163
Actually, I was in South Carolina last month myself. The Hampton Inn in Mt Pleasant (near Charleston) had MSNBC and in my experience, it’s rare ; )

Kanye West was right- George Bush doesn’t care about black people. Or white people. Or brown people. Or any people but His People- that would be “the haves & the have mores,” I guess.
Who could ever matter to BushCo but Them, no matter how great the American People’s need, want, & suffering from this & other tragedies. GWB will appear in NOLA & make some mouth noises about how he cares- the drowned & the maimed won’t be there to voice their opinion on what he says. They won’t be allowed.
Katrina shoved the ugly truth of GWB’s indifference to those in his charge up from the nation’s unconscious into all our faces, made it painfully obvious & unavoidable, right up into this soon-to-be 2 yr. anniversary of our nation’s largest disaster & the disgrace that has been its aftermath…
Sorry to sound bitter, but bitterness is sometimes warranted.

Had a work friend, she’d be about 65 now. She was a mechanical engineer (before she became a programmer). She told the story of her first job. She was ready to start the next day. They said no, next week. 10 years later, when she left, she asked why the delay of a week?
Because they had to get the guys to take down all the girlie posters.
“What? That wouldn’t have bothered me!”
“Yeah, we know, but we didn’t realize it then.”
bobschacht @ 175
Sounds like good advice. It’s a liberal-arts school, so it should provide the opportunity to explore a lot of other things while studying engineering, if she does follow through on that. (That’s what I did.)
I didn’t decide to go into it because of money, though, and I agree that’s hard to understand. Maybe the better way to put it would be to encourage her to be sure that it’s something she’ll enjoy doing, because there’s little point choosing to spend most of your time doing something you don’t much like just to make a living.
And keep in mind that she may know herself, too. She may actually think she’ll like engineering (it is pretty cool) and even if she has artistic skills, that doesn’t mean she’d necessarily like to make a living at it. And writing skill will be really valuable as an engineer, too.
Steve-AR @ 189
thank you so much for the link. I’m speechless. And frightened.

My big problem with the rebuilding of New Orleans is this: Over 100,000 people left the city and didn’t come back. Can anyone in good conscience tell those folks that they should return to the city?
i was off doing other things………
just read the last few comments………..i was registered to go to school later in life for engineering…….mechanical…….when i killed my back and life took a turn………but still love math.
no matter which kind of engineering, if she doesn’t love math, and how things work, it’s not a good choice………it’s like teaching, you have a calling, it’s how you operate……..if it’s not she will be miserable…….you either have it or you don’t.
the reason i popped in, at the expense of my browser, which every time i go to cnn it freezes……i get updates, and this one i wanted everyone to see…and yes, the browser did freeze, but did it anyway to read the article to see if it needed to be passed on, it did, it was worth it….totally disgusting. allawi.

One more about Hotel programming and then I’ll shut up! LOL
Some Hotels will list MSNBC on the in-romm TV guide but if the manager is a wingnut they can lock it out and I’ve seen that happen more than a few times. No other explanation for it!? ; )

I watch Countdown almost every night, but couldn’t get this special edition tonight.
Typcial format, he has five stories and starts with the fifth, which is almost always the most significant political development of the day. He usually gives it fifteen minutes, including one or two outside experts. His regulars are:
– Dana Milbank
– Jonathan Alter
– Richald Wolfe
– Jonathan Turley, Gerogetown law professor (libertarian?)
– Often someone from VoteVets.org
The subsequent stuff tends more toward entertainment/novelty stuff, often ending with the antics of the pop-tarts.
He often comes back to politics at the end, especially when he does one of his special comments.
I usually get bored half way through, unless he says he is going to do a special comment; those are priceless.

NOLA Mayor Ray Nagin has repeatedly said that he wants people to come home. Many of those who evacuated to other places want to come home. Porblem is, for most of them, there is no home to come to. It has been 2 years since Katrina, and people are still waiting and fighting for insurance money, and do not even get me started on “the Road Home” fiasco. Most people do not have the resources to pay two mortgages or a mortgage and rent. If you’re paying a note on a house that you can’t live in, you have a few choices. If you’re lucky (snort) you get a FEMA trailer. But if you lived in some parts of town that still do not have water and sewer service, you don’t get a trailer. So, you can try for a rental, and between working to pay for 2 homes somehow find time to fix up your damaged house. Or, you can stay in the city you evacuated to and try to start over. There are no good choices here.
And Joe Lieberman? Dead. To. Me.
bobschacht @ 174
don’t know if it’s still the same, but when i went to school there wasn’t time to do much of anything but the engineering course work 16-19 credits per semester and very few electives. the first 2 years were jam packed with math, physics, chemistry and intro classes to all the engineering fields. it wasn’t like some other majors where it’s ok to declare a major the beginning of junior year.
the down side to an engineering degree is the lack of history and literature. if i had to do it all over again, i would have used every elective for those kinds of classes – instead i mostly took econ and logic and stuff like that.
swarthmore may be different though, because it is a liberal arts college. don’t know anything about their engineering program, but it’s hard to imagine she’d get anything other than an outstanding education there.
regardless of the skills you’ve observed in your niece, do you judge her interest in engineering as genuine? if so, i’d just support her choices.
Oilfieldguy @ 99
Nah, it wasn’t the horses that delayed us- couldn’t figure out how to keep the dog teams cool :->
“We shouldn’t be thinking about terrorism in terms of its domestic political consequences, we should be protecting the country from terrorists,” said Richardson in a statement. “Senator Clinton seems to think that President Bush has made this country safer. eureka at 204 says-”Will any reporter ever link Zelicow and the PNAC?”
we can dream………dreamin’ is free……….

I wonder if anyone in N.O. asked Barack how he expects to be all bipartisan and *hit with Joe Lieberman..when Barack is President. Or if anyone asked why he supported Joe in his last senate campaign..
From last thread’s estrogen v. testosterone moment…
Why not huevos?
*great language crossover (assimilation)
*great connotative potency wrt “having the noive” to do [FITB]
*great carryover from matriarchal culture
*great sex-gender inclusiveness, harkening back to our
morphogenic similiarities in utero…

I guess I missed your follow-up after reading the first comment about testosterone and demi’s reply in the last thread, didn’t realize there was a larger issue.
I understood entirely what you meant, though, about Boxer and Pelosi and their “estrogen moments”, and you are spot on.
In a society that is more than 50% female with a Senate that is only 14% female, there are not enough estrogen moments. You know that — but I think some of us have become so jaded and inured that we often get knee-jerky about a testorone-overloaded world.
One of these days the real majority is going to snap out of its torpor and watch out.

Our own AK has a very good posting on the Allawi coup effort: http://spookinthemachine.blogs…..-2007.html
In addition, Glenn “Glennzilla” Greenwald has excellent comments on Zelikow, both of Friday and today. I recommend them. (Digby’s excerpt misses too much good stuff.)

What, you’ve never known my infantile side?
On topic-Joe Lieberman is a disgrace, but we’ve known that for some time. Harry Reid, on the other hand, has been given the benefit of the doubt for way too long. When he praises JoeLie and gives him a chairmanship, we’re confused. When Dodd says that Reid discouraged the filibuster, we’re confused again. I think it’s time to recognize that maybe he’s not just trying to placate JoeLie, maybe he means everything he has said, maybe he’s a true ally to Lieberman.

My father had a small office building in Metairie. Before his claim was finally settled he had seen NINE insurance adjusters. He just sold the building because he did not want to deal with that hell any longer. He is in his 80’s. My parents also lost their home on the 17th Street canal. They are living in Picayune, MS. I could go on but the stories involving my family and New Orleans are just too much to express in my current state of mind. But I will say that I hate Lieberman and Boosh.
Steve-AR @ 189
OMG. Was this Blackwater?
Furthermore, Wilson said that as the Kuhns were being arrested and taken off, he saw a man in fatigues drive by and shout “Go to jail, baby!”
After his experience, Mark Kuhn said he is convinced this is not an isolated occurrence. “If Americans don’t wake up to the martial state we’re in, the cops, the police, the sheriffs, the state police will all come to our door and take us away if we allow this to happen – it’s time for America to wake up.”

good luck forcing one delivery system to

Harry Shearer has done some kick-a*s work for the last 2 years keeping the story current on Huffpo. Also check out http://www.nola.com, the site for the local NOLA paper, the Times-Picayune. The TP took Pulitzers for their aftermath coverage.
Marymccurnin-we were living in Metry when the storm hit. Have since moved to the northshore but still have family and friends all over the metro area. The older folks are the ones I feel worst for. Everything they took their lives to build just gone and not much time left to fix things. The cynic in me says that it is probablypart of the plan to wait out the elderly in the hopes they will die and no one will have to pay them what they are owed.
solai @ 165
Just one channel of HBO, right? I think that’s a special deal for hotels. I’m on DirecTV (no cable around here), and if I were to buy HBO, I’d get like 6 channels of it. DirecTV gives MSNBC for free, but I’m sure there’s licensing between them that not all providers sign up for.
New post upstairs…

We’ll have to agree to disagree.
See the previous thread about the Political Brain — it’s most definitely about hitting a nerve.
The source of my distress is that which underlies a Senate comprised of 86 men and 14 women.
and mary mccurnin-
i looked at your pics way back when, months ago…….haunting……the one of the angel still sticks in my mind…….
i think of it whenever someone mentions new orleans, and when harry shearer mentions it, i picture your picture……..wow…….an artist has impact. forever.
omg i missed a female/male thing?????????????????
shit
i’m gonna have to go back and read about what the fuss is about but meanwhile—
i was one of the first women to work outside for the phone company in the country…….i took some shit………..non-traditional in a major way………and yes, i was good lookin’ and yes i did my job, all of my coworkers adopted me, other women doin’ it, can’t say the same for them, they didn’t last………………
female/male………..hmmmmmmmmmm
my lesbian step-sister pointed out the sexism in commercials in the early 80’s, didn’t see it, made me think………then made me think some more…………..
sure wish i would have already read the comments on it…………..
you kinda had to be there.
and the rest gained from what we did.
now, it’s open field day for women, came at a cost……..we paid it.
Loo Hoo. @ 239
Blackwater? Nah! Every twobit town in the US has gotten some terrist dollars. Cops love to strut in their new, black Tac gear.
Rayne @ 255
As a carryover, then, (in EPU land, no less)
yes, outlined in the Political Brain,
In order of importance, they are:
1) their feelings toward the parties and their principles,
2) their feelings toward the candidates, and
3) their feelings toward particular policy positions. He is clear that Democrats come up woefully short on all but the third.
If it is, as the book states, all about the visceral, then what I am saying is highly relevant.
All of those society-sustaining activities such as infrastructure, public schooling, caring for young and elders, or even public finance of elections, as you allude to, have heretofore been equated with “soc*al*sm” or “mommy-party.”
When correctly identified as neither feminine nor masculine, but rather as essential to survival, what gets usurped is partisan thieving of collectively held amassed assets.
All I am saying, even in use of a metaphor for “guts” — (i.e., “amassed assets with action potential”) — is to pull the camera back a little. The metaphor was designed to tap into a collective, much as a shared highway.
If you can sit through understanding the amygdala, then there may be some payoff to elevating awareness about our commonalities before we differentiate in the womb.
Grasp it if you will. That’s what was intended.
Authenticty of that video, as described, is suspect.
I found that video several years ago researching the C-130 when I found out they wer using them.
It certainly could be from that theater, but the video is several years old.
I just wanted to say that I don’t think the photo attached to this article was taken in New Orleans. It looks like the Mississippi gulfcoast… two very different problems to be addressed. Katrina wiped out the MS gulf coast. The Army Corp of Engineers Levee Failures caused the problems in New Orleans. I’m having flash backs from 2 years ago watching the news on CNN where no one pointed out this difference.
TribeScribe @ 259
There are bills that have been recently submitted or will soon be submitted in several states that deem a fertilized egg a human being.
Such a bill puts an egg, even unimplanted, on the same footing with the adult woman in which it resides. It makes taking any contraceptive measures tantamount to killing.
I’ve already been denied birth control pills nearly 16 years ago now by a doctor whose wife demanded he stop dispensing them for this very reason, that BCP prevented the implantation of fertilized eggs and were therefore abortive.
Grasp that. All of it.
You want to permanently denigrate my rights as a human? Emphasize eggs.
Rayne @ 262
You want to split off your potential support from men on women’s issues,
emphasize ovaries.
You want to split off your potential support from other women on women’s issue,
insist on right-fighting and obtusely missing the point.
Not having a formal investigation into the Katrina debacle amounts to nothing but a failure on the part of the Dem. leadership in the senate, this is another reason why I believe, new leadership is definitely needed. Dems. are saying to African Americans, it’s only your vote that is important to us otherwise, (to quote a line form HRC’s ad.) “you are invisible”.
