Just a reminder for everyone, Keith Olbermann will be doing a special broadcast of Countdown on primetime NBC this evening:
7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT on NBC, leading into the network’s “Sunday Night Football” pre-season NFL matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers, live at 8 p.m. ET. Olbermann is joining the network’s “Football Night in America” studio team this season. The special edition of “Countdown” will be broadcast live from MSNBC’s studios.
Although, according to twolf1, NBC appears to have pulled their press release on this from their website. What gives, oh network suits?
In any case, in a medium where ratings are the currency of choice, how about we help out the show by turning on the telly to watch a heaping helping of Countdown snark? If nothing else, O’Reilly will love you for it.
Olbermann will also be doing some pre-game coverage of the NFL game this evening. The fact that I get a Steelers game in the bargain? Just an added bonus…
PS — A bit of good news for Sen. Tim Johnson, his family and friends. So glad to hear it. And TexBetsy sent along a link that says most schools are going the way of green. Good on them! (See, I promised something cheerier…) And for some additional giggles, do peruse this classic orange cheesecake recipe from montag. Mwahahahahaha… (H/T to dmac for re-posting it. Priceless!)

National Guard troops in Puerto Rico cheer when the governor calls for withdrawal from Iraq.
(AP) A call by Puerto Rico’s governor for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq earned a standing ovation from a conference of more than 4,000 National Guardsmen.
Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila said Saturday that the U.S. administration has “no new strategy and no signs of success” and that prolonging the war would needlessly put guardsmen in harm’s way.
KEITH!
i’ll certainly be watching! i missed KO all this week :o)
juslin @ 4
He had a sub.
Thank you very much, I will watch. I wouldn’t have known about this without the post, I don’t watch much tv.
subs not quite up to par tho alison wasn’t too bad…
TexBetsy @ 5
Speaking of subs, does anyone know what happened to Monica Novotny(sp). She sub’d once and was really good..Allison Stewart(?) not so good.
Oh, Keith, I love you!!!
And you too, Christy.
I like Alison a lot. Girl’s got some spunk!
monica has an afternoon slot now – dont know if she’s permanent but she’s on early pm
off to tutor. back tonight
I really like when Keith fumes a bit when he has to talk about Brittany, Lohan or some other horseshit from Hollywood.
Anyone hear Tom Ricks, Micheal Gordon and Richard Engel share their opinions and insights this morning on MTP?
Ricks kept repeating that it has come down to the “least bad option”. Micheal Gordon was focused on the “Reconcilation Committee”
Richard Engel siad that it was a for sure thing that Maliki “will collapse”. Engels kept repeating that we needed to “change the rules of the game”. Hello Engels what game?
Is this the way a reporter should be looking at Iraq as a “game”?
Engels also said that “the troops will be furious if they are pulled out”. The Iraqi war Soldiers and Vets should be contacting Engels to let him know there are plenty of soldiers who disagree with his assessment.
Excellent news for the Johnson family and for all of us.
If Alison is Olbermann’s regular sub, she is very good. Better than Keith often, in terms of pointed objective questioins. She comes off more even handed often than Olbermann which I like (but maybe some hear don’t), and sometimes that works more effectively. I would love her to run one of them half hour talkathons. She would destroy alot of the bigshots, and do it in just the very nices way, too. She is one of the quickest thinking TV talkers I have ever seen.
I hope we are talking about the same person.

alison used to have the 3pm slot on misnbc but they took? her off – she’s supposed to have a radio gig on npr i think tho not sure if thats the network
wesgpc @ 15
She is getting better but she still “plays to the camera” with her snarky smirks during the “serious part” of the show.
Yes, that is the one I mean. Giver her her own dang show! I want her running Meet the Press, This Week and Face the Nation.
Look at the Aug 24 show, she was great.
I like allison lots, as well. She is a real thinking person. And has a sense not only of humor, but of the ridiculous as well.
I’ll have to tape the show. Audra McDonald and Patti LuPone are at Ravinia tonight. Can’t wait.
I just hope Keith isn’t watered down for the NFL crowd.
BTW, thanks Loo Hoo. How do you peopel get those links and pictures? I couldn’t even figure out how to the Aug 24 show, and I was watching it, there and could see how to link to it.
Does Keith need a sponsor?
;>)
alison is a jersey girl – i first saw her on mtv news… i think she has a tendency to be snarky but she knows not to do it too often tho i wish she would do so more – but what do i know?…..
Loo Hoo. @ 17
The GF of the same name (and British sp) said exactly the same thing. But..but..said I, the show isn’t about gorgeous Alison, it’s about saving our country. Must be the age difference.
Well, I think both Keith and Alison could run all the major Sunday talkies simultaneously better than the current farts do it now. I seldom have time to watch them, so rely on transcripts. I would not be distracted by beauty, glamor, or the polished sports caster swank.

wesgpc, when you get to the article you want to link, go up top to the http://etc. Highlight it and go edit to copy. (same as you’d copy anything) Come back to the FDL comment box and go edit to copy.
If you want to imbed the link, highlight the word you want to use instead of the long http, hit the link box at the top of the comment box. REMOVE THE HTTP// already there and copy the http. If that doesn’t work, hit control v (or on a mac the squiggly thing to the left of the space bar and v). It will ask you ok? a couple of times. It’s a good idea to use preview before you submit, and to go to the prior thread to practice.
I got Alison’s picture from google images.

Yeah, things are obviously much safer. The report does say that violence is down in Baghdad this year, but the ’surge’ just displaced it to other provinces. AP adds:
Nearly 1,000 more people have been killed in violence across Iraq in the first eight months of this year than in all of 2006. So far this year, about 14,800 people have died in war-related attacks and sectarian murders. The AP accounted for 13,811 deaths in 2006.

Phewwww thought that the Phoenix AZ local station was not going to show it but on KPNX Channel 12 – KO will be on 9pm MST (we don’t do daylight savings). The only thing on is a rerun of Shark.
Shuster is good too, but he sometimes comes off as at least appearing to have his mind made up, and comes close to badgering.
I think Alison (Stewart?) on Countdown has best approach. She can nail people and seem to be very nice about it. Which is good for persuadiing audience, I think.
But all three are much much better than average slop.

It’s a shame that Matthews isn’t succeeding- it’s about the only pure politics show on TeeVee. Part of it may be Chris- he’s a load- but most of it is probably due to the fact that most americans HATE a real discussion of politics– and how the game is played.

This is big Brzezinski supports Obama
http://www.tpmcafe.com/blog/co…..nventional
“Sending an important signal, Brzezinski has just endorsed Barack Obama’s candidacy over Hillary Clinton’s. Brzezinski is one of the greatest strategic minds alive today and does understand the need to make changes in policy today to generate different outcomes tomorrow.
“Obama is clearly more effective and has the upper hand,” Brzezinski, who was President Jimmy Carter’s national security adviser, said. “He has a sense of what is historically relevant, and what is needed from the United States in relationship to the world.”
Brzezinski, 79, dismissed the notion that Clinton, 59, a New York senator and the wife of former President Bill Clinton, is more seasoned than Obama, 46. “Being a former first lady doesn’t prepare you to be president,” Brzezinski said.
Clinton’s foreign-policy approach is “very conventional,” Brzezinski said. “I don’t think the country needs to go back to what we had eight years ago.”
“There is a need for a fundamental rethinking of how we conduct world affairs,” he added. “And Obama seems to me to have both the guts and the intelligence to address that issue and to change the nature of America’s relationship with the world.”

Why aren’t we getting Keith’s NBC show on the West Coast? I bet Keith is more popular out here then anywhere else in the country!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
juslin @ 58
Tweety has a looooong way to go. Until he stops assholes like Ol’ 60-Grit from coming on his show, lying to his face, and responding by skulking away to another topic, he’s got nothing.
Come with facts and insist your guests do also, or GTF out.
Tucker probably started crying when he heard of Keith’s prime spot.
Tweety tries to do a political show using discussions between active partisans- this doesn’t work for shit. All ya get is a yellathon.
Sometimes he uses journalists- but that only works if the journalists happen to be experts in politics- and usually they are not.
If one wanted to do a real show on politics- they would probably have to use academics who would discuss the plans and execution of various political figures in a candid and non- partison way- “This was a good move and will probably work- THAT was foolish and will backfire”
Unfortunately- such a show won’t get much viewership.
While the pentagon is setting up a War Information Room, I have to buy composition books for my students.
If Alison (Stewart?) on Olbermann had a show of her own and it didn’t work, it may be because she will not (or cannot) do the degrading acts required (or deemed to be required by the suits) for keeping a show. Look, how does Matthews stay on? No offense to comment above, but Matthews is good and on point one day, then insane or bizarre for next two.
Guys have to act like frat rats, women have to give some sort of submissive or sexy or ditzy show.
Come to think of it, both Olbermann and Alison (Stewart?) come off a little colorless compared to the usual antics you see. Olbermann less so than his sub, because of what I would call his standard sports caster manly swankout act.
But I dunno. I am judging from intenet clips, so maybe I only see the really goofy bits from others. But everyone seems to have an act which is just as important, or more, than like, knowning stuff and asking good quetions. It’s like a sitcom. Gotta have a character with a theme.
KO will be on in TX.
rwcole….unfortunately, Tweety’s Softball show is NOT a purely political show…it’s mostly an avenue for Chris’s gossipy style…mostly about the Clintons. My vote would be for David Schuster to be his replacement!
And everytime Allison subs for Olberman, it shows me how shallow much of Countdown is…without Keith’s trenchant remarks the show is really a DUD!
ahhh if only newshour would rise to the occasion…..

I think the KO show tonight might be in high definition, for folks with HDTVs.
Be sure to send some email love to NBC after the show.
Oh, and boo to the Steelers.
analysis at Pollster.com shows that Rudee’s lead is based on name recognition- he is not leading among goopers who are familiar with others in the race- bad news for Rooo-DEEE.
Hillary, on the other hand- is leading even among dems who know her opponents well.
Interesting read.
Kathleen says: August 26th, 2007 at 11:29 am
This is big Brzezinski supports Obama
Good news for Obama, and for Democratic race, I think. I think, whether you agree with everything or not, Obama has had more courage to utter substance, and go with common sense rather than the depraved current celebrity pundit conventional wisdom approach.
Maybe Clinton will provide a bit more substance to her foreign and security policy positions now (and vision thing). That is the part of her campaign that I have found most disappointing. Too much gotcha and posturing, for my taste. But intinitely better than anything on GOP side, which is truly scary.
Tweety is too focused on the showmanship of politics, not the substance. He likes the horse race aspect, not what’s vital to the country.
One Burning Question: Why are local affiliates, such as KSBW channel 8 in Monterey, allowed to show Countdown at 10PM PT, well after the game ends? According to the station’s own TV listings, the special Countdown episode will include a preview of Sunday Night Football. I’ve written the station to ask why they’re showing a “preview” AFTER the game and to request that they air Countdown at its scheduled time, 4PM. No response yet…
Steve-AR @ 37
I was just asking a friend of mine about this the other day. I knew he was in bad shape, but I didn’t realize he was brain dead. From a purely scientific standpoint, I wonder how long you can keep the body alive after the brain has died. I’m also curious about what the inside of his head looks like. When brain tissue dies, it usually liquifies over time. Stroke victims will often have little holes in their brains. That’s part of the reason why Terri Schiavo’s brain was so small at autopsy. In Sharon’s case, the damage is much more extensive. I wonder if he’s got any brain left at all.

Agree on Tweety–he’s never had the guts to try a true political show- but it’s probably the closest thing out there- although SOMETIMES Scarborough and Buchanan do a GREAT job.
Also agree on countdown- I have the same reaction when Keith isn’t on- “why am I watching this shit?”
As you suggest- it may be a weak format-
God knows the second half of the show is usually lame even when Keith IS there.
I usually turn it off after the first twenty minutes.
As soon as he starts with the “blonde girls gone wild” shit- I’m outta there! (And blaming it on his “producers” ain’t cuttin it.)

The usual suspects on TV are terrified of substantive commentary or analysis. I did watch all of the show which had Emmanuel and Markos on. You would think that the mighty face off between the DLC and the dictator of the whole mean lefty blogosphere would have merited a word of comment. But the host and the rest of show fled from it like it was the plague. Maybe I was wrong, but I didn’t see signs of contempt, but rather fear of dealing with issues they could not write into their political sitcom script easily.
juslin @ 58
Matthews is the only MSMer to slip in a mention that the A*P*C espionage trial had been delayed 6 times…the only MSMer. Matthews has had Amy Goodman on numerous times,( I think he really respects her), and he is along with KO one of the only folks to ask hard driving questions of the “cakewalk” crazies. Matthews has been doing this longer than Olbermann, bitch slapping them hard. I believe they will not even come on his program any longer.
Matthews was the first Mainstreamers to do a show ( I believe several in a row) on the injured soldiers in Walter Reed quite some time ago. He was one of the first to take us into Walter Reed.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6686538/
I do not agree with Matthews a great deal of the time, but I do believe he ask some of the most hard driving questions being asked in the MSM. Although along with Russert he often lets people get away with making unsubstantiated claims about Iran.
sooo the dem primaries are irrelevant?? seems hrc has it all locked down…. or so the pollsters and pundits would have us believe…….is this designed to keep primary turnout low?
selise @ 89
Yet, the Taliban spokesman was admitted to a program at Yale. Go figure.
Hope Keith doesn’t water down the vitrole for everything corrupt about the Bushies for national television. He MUST give a special commentary, please, Keith. Show middle America what you are about!
juslin @ 92
I’d be interested to see a poll of us here on FDL to see how the candidates line up. Teevee claims she is leading with 48%. I find that hard to believe.
I turn off Keith after the news portion too. Good thing he tells us at the beginning of the show when he’s going to have a special comment.
Get Tough @ 94
It will be interesting to see how the hardcore booyah group reacts to having KO right before their game…I’m sure it will have to be a watered down version…at least at first.
selise @ 89
Wonder what Yale and Harvard have against the facts being discussed about the middle east?
kathleen@90
tweety sends mixed messages – yes sometimes he gets it right but then backs off as if to not offend whoever his handlers are
On the west coast, the Barbara Walters pre-Oscar show is always run after the Oscars show itself. Which is sometimes odd, because the interviews usually speculate about who will win.
It may be because the tv folks don’t think enough people are watching that early in the afternoon. But all these live events are times for best viewing on the east coast, in primetime.
They can’t tape delay the game, like they do with most shows, not with radio and the internet. The fans would never stand for it.
Kathleen- good points- Matthews often does some good things.
He got started during the Clinton cocksniffing days- when “shoutover” became the norm of behavior for the “guests” on these shows. Even the name “hardball” stemmed from the idea that people would watch politicians takin each other down and being taken down by a host.
It was a bullshit formula at the beginning- and unfortunately, some of it still remains.
LS @ 95
A quick glance at Tweety’s Sunday show proved that the MSM wants HRC as the democractic candidate, and for two main reasons: (1) They don’t have to dig for dirt, it is on ice and ready for slinging, and (2) IF she does win, she is the most appealing candidate to the Republicans and their MSM because of her hawkish stance and non-progressive positions on almost everything. Tweety has already annoited her the candidate–his “roundtable” had to mention Obama and Edwards continously on the show for them to get any publicity.
LS @ 93
Bush and Libby went to Yale right? Juan Cole would be a problem if Libby and Bush reflect Yale’s standards.
The polls on the primaries are bullshit at this point- they need a screening question such as :
“Do you really give a shit about the debates and such going on right now- or do you think it’s absurdly early for all this?”
juslin @ 99
Would that be Dan Abrams?
Tweety has been asking about Iran…
Loo Hoo. @ 95
Recall that week before last, KO did the extensive look at Shooter after the mid-point of the show. He may have had feedback about the structure of the show and adjusted accordingly.
I can’t believe that Abrams is running the thing- an extremely unimpressive man.
I absolutely hate and loathe to admit it, but sometimes Matthews is very good and has charged ahead with topics others won’t touch, and really challanged guests in ways that other shows don’t.
But then he is drooling over chicks, calling horse races, being sexist and trivial re Clinton, and rather corruptly hawking books with coulter and smarmily small talking bigshots who will give him status as if he were a flunky.
Odd. I can’t figure it out. He gave up a newspaper column that was better than most because he said it wasn’t good enough. And supposedly he caved to corporate orders to play nice with touchy issues (with head of GE).
A very mixed bag. Need a movie a clef on the guy. Kubrick Hitchcoc, and Wilder are gone. Who should do it?
Thanks, newtonusr. I’ll keep it on with the volume way down just in case.

The “Clinton Impeachment” period generated some of the worst television ever broadcast–Guests were CHOSEN for their looniness and willingness to behave like idiots on camera. 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT on NBC, leading into the network’s “Sunday Night Football”
The special edition of “Countdown” will be broadcast live from MSNBC’s studios.
I’m confused. What channel will I be watching at what time in PT zone? The NBC station in L. A. only lists local news.
Will those of us in Los Angeles area be able to watch KO?
If so, what time?
Keith is the new Edward R Morrow. He is great.
BUT. The last half of his show stinks and is a sad waste of valuable news time.
Michael Mosto ought to be fired. On Aug. 13 he used a blatent racist remark. He said in talking about Paris or some other air head “that was mighty WHITE of him.” It an old white racist comment an is about as vile as the “N”word. Do the right thing Keith. Fire him now.
Gdebs @ 129
I don’t know why MSNBC has to throw tabloid crap into just about every show they air. I no longer watch the final five to ten minutes of Countdown. It’s juvenile and Keith should tell “the powers that be” that he doesn’t want to do those stories anymore. He use to preface the segment with a comment about it being a story his producer was forcing him to do…….maybe MSNBC should hire some adult producers. For some reason I think that ‘Tabloid Dan’ may have something to do with all the skin crawling sleaze stories.
Let’s see,
Michael Musto bad.
More NFL shucking and jiving good.
Who … could. . . ask …. ,for, anything …. more
(plans on watching simpsons reruns instead)
nbc.com doesn’t list the 7PM Countdown show for tonight, before the Football game…Hmmmm. WTF? If the blogs didn’t promote it, we’d miss it. Corporate error or on purpose? I ‘ll be rooting for a hit time slot, with encores on the network. Brian Williams is so much oatmeal. Alison Stewart is great. She has great timing and is a speed reader. I too wish they’d lose the second half Hollywood stuff. More guests and deeper dialogue would get an even bigger audience.
sofistic @ 86
That’s one of the saddest aspects of the decline of the NPR panel shows. Almost all the conservatives have no compunction about interrupting and talking over anyone else (and they usually have the gall to interrupt with “can I get a word in here” or “if I may respond to that” when they’ve just finished talking and someone else is responding to them.)
The hosts sometimes try to control them, but they’re all bullies. If it were me, I’d make it clear to them that anyone who pulls that crap will not be invited back, no matter who they are (along with people who tell blatant lies, and people who have been so egregiously wrong that they can no longer plausibly claim to be “experts.”) That’s the only possible way to have a civil and informative discourse, rather than an hour spent trying to debunk bullshit.
“You are watching Countdown on NBC”
That’s gotta nice ring to it! ; )
7:00PM ET on the West coast. In L. A., no Keith, no Countdown, only Lester on NBC Nightly News. The game starts in less than an hour. Anybody on the East coast watching Countdown?
Cozumel @ 134
Well, as usual California gets fucked
Countdown a no show in Los Angeles. Booooo!
we’re not getting it in Mountain Time either. ARRRGGGGGHHHHH!
I have DishNetwork in LA and they now have it on the schedule to be shown at 10pm local time. Somebody should update the main thread.

I’m in Mountain Time. Just got from work,
I just looked and it comes on AFTER the game.
AHA! Just noticed KO is on the Comcast (Boulder, Mountain Time) program guide for 9 pm AFTER the football game. Yay!
They have really F*ed up the west coast. They say Keith is on at 7:00 pm. Fine. That is 4:00 here. No Keith. And they say goofy things like “7:00/6:00 central.” So what? I don’t care what time it is on THERE.
Long story short. We have 2 different “TV guides” at our house — TiVo and a local one (like TiVo). TiVo shows Keith on at 9:00. The local one shows him on at 10:00. And when you go to the NBC website, at the time it is on, it says, “This show is NO LONGER available.” Really? When WAS it available?
They are trying their hardest to make Olbermann have a small viewership. Bastids.

NBC just updated their program schedule about an hour ago. Earlier in the day it was’nt on the schedule at all for the west coast. Probably the same deal in mountain time.
Mike McConnell, the Director of National Intelligence making the startling assertion that merely discussing the Bush administration’s wiretapping of Americans will kill Americans. The reporter asked, “so you’re saying that the reporting and the debate in Congress means that some Americans are going to die?” McConnell replied, “that’s what I mean, because we have made it so public. We used to do these things very differently. He then declassified five previously secret details about the wiretap program and told them to the reporter from the El Paso Times. I may be missing something here, but that sure sounds like you have just made it so public.
Our runner up. Good old Bill O’Reilly of fixed news. Citing a recent investigative report from all of places, msnbc.com. He told his cable audience, “we know that journalists, most journalists give money to democrats.” No really, no. The report said that most journalists who do give money to political groups give that money to democrats but the report only found 127 American journalists who had given money to democrats out of about 100,000. That would be approximately 1/110th of 1%. As opposed to say, most.
But our winner in an upset, comedian Rush Limbaugh explaining that Americans who want to see their sons and daughters and friends and neighbors brought home from iraq alive are actually racists. “They want to get us out of Iraq but they can’t wait to get us into darfur,” the comedian explained. “What color is the skin of the people in Darfur, he asked? It’s black. And who do the Democrats really need to keep voting for them if they lose a significant percentage of this voting block they’re in trouble?” Wait, I haven’t got tonight best part. Rush, I hate to break this to you, but most of American investment in South Africa came while Ronald Reagan was president and while the first George Bush was president they let Mandela out of jail and also, you’re nuts! Comedian Rush Limbaugh, today’s worst person in the world.

I think Chertoff’s “Israeli Citizenship” is not due to any “act” by him. He has that citizenship because the Israeli government views any descendant of an Israeli as a citizenship. ASFAIK Chertoff hasn’t served in the Israeli Armed Forces, voted in an Israeli election or owned property in Israel. But most ethnic Jews can become citizens of Israel by “right of blood”.
It’s like Obama being born of a male Kenyan citizen allowing him to claim Kenyan citizenship.
Countries have different standards for conferring citizenship status usually based on “jus sanguinus” (right of blood) or “jus soli” (right of soil) conditions.
http://www..wikipedia.org/wiki/Jus_sanguinis
That means that some American citizens may technically be inactive “citizens” of a particular other country through descent, while others are citizens of other countries due to their birthplace.
The only place where the latter restriction is Constitutionally prevented is for the office of President. Immunized US Citizens born abroad (not those who are US citizens through right of blood) cannot serve as President. There is also an odd, and little noticed “residency law”. Members of Congress are not restricted in such a matter.
However, any one that has served as a member of a foreign government or in their military subsequent to becoming a citizen may be construed as having taken “an affirmative step” ceding their citizenship rights.

The phrase “that was mighty WHITE of him” comes from Huckleberry Finn. Twain used it with biting irony having Huck say it after Jim risks his life and his freedom to assist Tom. Stupid Little Tom is so imbedded in the racism of his day that his best complement is saying that Jim did something “White”.
I didn’t see the Mosto comment and the context…but it is now often used to indicate someone that uses Huck’s patronizing(and clueless) attitude.
