“Original Soul Line”

I loved dance shows when I was a kid. Although I liked American Bandstand, I always slept through it being a late riser on Saturday mornings and it starting at 11:30 am. Soul Train on the other hand started at 3:30 on Saturday afternoons so I always got to catch that. The dancing was cooler, the clothes were cooler, and the show had a climax that was always worth waiting for… the Soul Train Dance Line.
In keeping with my enjoyment of these shows, I’m going to debut a new track tonight called “Headcheck” on the world’s first interactive webcam dance party called The Top Floor. Yes, you read that right. If you can wrap your head around this, viewers at home can join the dance party via their webcams and be mixed in with the dancers at the live party in Los Angeles. It’s truly a trip and bonefide worldwide. You can check out some clips of previous shows and also tune in tonight at 11 pm PST at www.thetopfloorlive.com. I’ll be there with my band for an interview at midnight, and then we’ll dance to “Headcheck”! People from all around the world join in. If you’d like to, you can sign in and be seen shakin’ your tail feather globally. See you tonight!

Didn’t expect a new one so quick…
You can be thankful I don’t have a webcam…..
Oh what fun! This a such a cool idea.
What a fantastic, fun idea. Chalk one up for a “good” use of technology.
I had a minute of my fifteen minutes of fame when I was fifteen and got on the Nick Clooney’s Bandstand show one time. And yes, that’s George’s father I’m talking about.
Hey Donita! And Fini!
if we can’t view it live, will it be up for viewing somewhereat some later date?
hi, donita and fini!
dakine01 @ 6
Ok, spill :)
Dang, Donita, where’s your normal platter of tunes???
Oddly enough I just saw this youtube clip the other day here…
Love it. Loved to dance to that song too!! That was definitely the best part of Soul Train. Dancing is good for the soul, and your idea is great!!
Kathleen @ 1
Hehehe. I actually am working as Communications Director for the guy running against Mike Pence. Barry Welsh could use some ActBlue love from FDL if anyone feels generous. He’s a great man and from the Netroots. He and his wife are regular diarists at DKos.

Isn’t there supposed to be yet another thread about now with the congressman from Californiz?
Donita Sparks
Me too and I bet it’s the only thing we have in common. lol.
Sounds great. I’d love to see that. Hopefully I don’t oversleep it, since it’s kind of Saturday morning where I live.
ticktock @ 17
I still see ‘em from time to time. I wanted a white man ‘fro when I was a kid…thank god I grew out of that.
egregious @ 8
Not much more to it. Nick had the teenage dance show in Cincinnati, where he was a newscaster. A girl I dated through high school belonged to a HS sorority and the sorority got tickets for the show. It was a Hawaiian theme night. Nick came by all of us and asked our names and schools. He got to me and I was wearing a short sleeve white shirt, madras shorts, and sandals. He pointed out that it wasn’t all that Hawaiian an outfit and I said I was a tourist.
Yes, I was already a smart a** even then.

Hey – fini – I’m still interested in helping if possible. Hit me up on facebook if you wanna.

Our cool new tune player only finds a couple of the tunes that I want. We’re working out some kinks.

Good going :)
Donita Sparks @ 24
Is it better to have live assery or archived assery?
Kathleen @ 14
And he buried them all.

CTuttle @ 25
By about a dozen years, Bra!
Way OT. Apologies.
The system has been broken a LONG time.
In 1991, a Boeing 737-300 nosed over and crashed in Colorado Springs.
A Rocky Mountains rotor, said the government.
In 1994, a Boeing 737-300 nosed over and crashed coming into Pittsburgh.
Currents coming off a Boeing 727 several miles ahead, said the government.
No, not a rudder problem.
Some years later, buried on page 17 of some rag, oh, it was a rudder problem. But we’ve fixed it.
Sorry for this way OT.
LS @ 12
Well, I’d like to take credit, but it’s not my idea. The Top Floor has been going on for months. I just got turned on to it recently and thought it would be cool to debut a track on it.
That’s a great song by The Isley Brothers, “Live It Up”

if you do make an ass of yourself, it’ll wind up on youtube alongside the footage from “the word” (the british tv show where donita dropped her pants and all was revealed), which i found recently.
egregious @ 38
Every little thing is magic!
finifinito @ 17
Yes, oops again!
I loved that way-cool train in the intro! That was the coolest thing. And Don Cornelius is cool too. Way cooler than Dick Clark :)
Now I can’t stop thinking of the Gap Band’s “Party Train.”
tbsa @ 32
That’s never, ever OT!
Our hearts are heavy with you and your town.
finifinito @ 30
That’s why I don’t want to miss it. :)

Donita Sparks @ 54
Well, see, with live assery you get the HAHA of the moment as it happens, but with archived assery, you get to go back to it and have the HAHA over and over again.

Yeah, the town is pretty much devastated. It’s the seventh person from Buchanan High School lost in the war. Our little town has paid a heavy price for ignorance and lies.
Dancing is such therapy for me. The dance floor is the one place I can really let go.
I just don’t dance with puppets. At this gay bar I used to dance at, there was this creepy puppet guy who used to bring his puppet with him. He would stand in front of the DJ booth, which was mirrored, and he would make his puppet dance.
He asked me a few times if I wanted to dance with said puppet. I think that statement was open to interpretation. I declined each time but he still persisted.
darkblack @ 60
See…damn…somehow I knew when this whole schtick started somebody was gonna go find this. Oy. My sister played this song about half a billion times when I was a kid.
I associate this song with playing with my brothers’ GI Joes and her Barbies in my sister’s room. GI Joe used to kick Ken’s ass every day and take Barbie out in his Jeep.
Norman Wagner @ 61
I was being fecetious/phunny. Sorry, tone doesn’t carry well with text :)

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like a scene from a David Lynch movie? Wow!
finifinito @ 68
I know, just wanted apologize for my mistake.
finifinito @ 67
Lucky you…I had to suffer through the entire early ’70’s Tiger Beat pantheon.
It made me what I am today
;>)
finifinito @ 67
It was really bizzare.
finifinito @ 59
You know, when I first started with my blog about a year ago, Soul Coughing came up so much in “comments” that I declared them the Beatles of Firedoglake. But now ELO has taken over the title in “comments” and I think it all goes back to Jacqrat.
Soul train made me think of Lipps Inc.
Donita Sparks @ 71
Yes. I blame Jacqrat as well. She began the ELO love months ago and its been spreading ever since. XANADU!
Millineryman @ 66
What exactly did his “puppet” look like?
Hi, Donita!
At midnight? Here in Brazil it will be 4:00 am… :-(
I don’t know if I will be able to watch, because I have to rehearse with my band, tomorrow early. We’ll play for all the day, because we have to rehearse the songs for our show September 15, we’ll play at a university of my city, Fortaleza. I’ll post the videos in YouTube! Donita, excuse me, I’m sorry to ask more, but I wanted to ask… Your shows in Brazil already have the day and the confirmed place? Is there some possibility to have your show in Fortaleza (CE)? Thank you for everything! Good luck for you tonight!
Here’s my song of the week.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=9ATikeWf8Ss
Donita Sparks @ 74
Oh man…dewd…you’re setting me up to have a friggin nightmare about a dancing puppet aren’t you? Well, when I call you screaming about a wooden Michael Flatley doing a Lord of the Dance stomping on me in a nightmare, remember I warned you.
Donita, sorry for my english… I wanted to say… Your shows in São Paulo and Curitiba, do they have day and confirmed place? Will your shows also be confirmed for other cities?
Everythingseemssoneat @ 76
Wow! An original Jim Morrison vocal on a brand new song? Jeez! Most Awesome! I need to get this CD.
finifinito @ 75
Heh, don’t blame the toobz, howzabout the telephone line…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRJQLzc-bco
Donita Sparks @ 74
It looked like him. It was very strange. For the most part he keep to himself. He had his place on the dance floor every week, and he was out of there before midnight when the place would start to get crowded.
I’d go early so I would have some room to move around and there wasn’t as many people around. So I was usually out on the dance floor when he was.
I know I’m not going to make any converts.
But if you’ve got a good ear and you like music, listen to original vinyl through a tube amplifier.
Corporate America has killed music.
finifinto- Yeah that’s off of the new Satellite Party CD. It’s pretty good.
Soul Train makes me think of Average White Band, who I love, love.
Too bad Lance Armstrong is a Bush apologist…he’s disappointed in Bush’s cancer funding…but he still doesn’t get it.
Just for Fini’s puppet phantasms…
ELO ‘elo

Jonathan @ 84
Well, let’s return the favor.

donita-
jumping late into the thread, haven’t read comments yet…….
wow, soul train, was just talking about it the other day…….oh my god.
my sister and i used to watch soul train every single week……..
you gotta understand, it was the late 60’s and early 70’s……not much around to hitch a star to…………
i was in the fifth grade in ‘69……..it came on after that…….
my sister was here a few weeks ago and we did the sooooooooooul traaaaaaaaaaaaaaain hoot and holler and cracked up…….
years later, my best friend and her daughter were tryin’ to teach me how to dance in their livin’ room…….i always envied dancers……just wasn’t something we did in our house……but in her house, they danced around the living room……taught me a lot…….
p.s. i dance like a back up singer with a mike in front of her………only way i know how……..a few weeks ago, a friend had her iowa cousin as a houseguest, he is a ballroom dancer…and a bio physicist….we gathered at her huge farmhouse porch out in the country and he gave lessons on how to waltz, which was chosen because i always wanted to learn how to waltz……it was 90 degrees and i sucked at it……..i bowed out and sat in the yard with hartley, the 22 yr old fox who also didn’t get it, on the furniture from the porch moved to the lawn, drinking gin and tonics……….i guess not everyone is meant to be a dancer………everyone had a hootin’ time, out in the country……..
darkblack @ 86
So now Flatley’s puppet is gonna be stomp/dancing on me to ELO. Thanks! Ugh.
finifinito @ 75
Such a good one! Even the “Long Version” is good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6uChtN8YcU
finifinito @ 91
Just be glad it wasn’t the DeFranco Family.
;>)
Looked for his appearance on Soul Train but could not find it: a substitute………http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..mp;search=
hey fini fini-
there was talk the other night about lp’s……..i said that you had posted a link to a nice turntable or two, but couldn’t find it……..
do you remember what it was? was reasonably priced……….
Is there anyone here who just loves music?
Got to give it up – Marvin Gaye (Soul Train)
Jandira Ferreira @ 80
Hi Jandira, early December, Sao Paulo and Curitiba only.
Your English is great!
dmac @ 93
Yeah, there are a few out there. Here is a Numark model and a Stanton model.
Jonathan @ 95
I have walls stocked full of vinyl and my last tube amp fried… you are killing me! *S*
Millineryman @ 83
I dig this dude.
I know I am going to regret asking…what did puppet dude look like?
I look at that video, and I have to ask myself where in the hell all this recent extreme disdain for gays in the black community came from. It sure wasn’t apparent then.
finifinito @ 99
You can buy super high quality, new, Technics turntables on line. I’ve got 3 of them. One place to buy them is KAB, in New Jersey. The problem with used turntables is like the problem with used cars.
Jonathan,
Love music, don’t have the money for a turntable. Really agree with you about the sound quality, though. I don’t have hardly any CDs–they’re so expensive. Thank God for YouTube.
Eureka Springs @ Marvin Gaye (Soul Train)#97
Thanks! That will get me through my work night!
Eureka Springs @ 100
I buy vinyl. Seriously.
Jonathan @ 102
The links I put up are to brand new models with USB interfaces for connecting them to a computer for archiving your vinyl. Technics doesn’t yet make a USB model to my knowledge.
dmac @ 90
Thanks for the stories. The Sooooooul Traaain!
Acanthus @ 103
I think that’s more the style of dress back then. Sure is different.
Jonathan @ 96
That was a rhetorical question… right??? ;-)
Not mine, amigo..) Built up most of my collection in San Francisco, which has to be one of the best places in the world to find old records in mint condition (due to the climate).
CTuttle @ 111
Not really. I like a good strong beat in music, but other than that I really don’t care about what I’m listening to, if I’m even listening to anything.
Love,
the heretic
Jonathan @ 96
I love a lot of things.
peanutbutter @ 113
*sputter* …that’s sheer heresy…!!! *g*
CTuttle @ 111
No.
Since about age 10, I’ve been able to gratify my self completely by listening to music. Rhapsody in Blue. Tchaicovski.
Later Mozart.
Today, all of the above, plus many more.
I care about music only because I like it.
Eureka Springs @ 97
I was going to post this! Love it.
OT–
A Harvard study predicts that the way we get news is evolving rapidly, and that in the future, we will get less and less of our news from local ‘dead tree’ newspapers, and more from the Internet– either from newspaper websites, or from news aggregators, like yahoo.
Well, let me save you some time, and introduce you to Truthout.org, in case you’re not already familiar with it. On their front page, you can easily access the best reporting from the MSM, but also the best from here, there, and everywhere. Well, not FDL per se, although they did have a link to FDL during the Libby trial (didn’t everyone?) They also present reports by their own investigative reporters, who rank with the best of the MSM most of the time.
They’re certainly a better news aggregator than Yahoo, and they’re a better first stop of the day than the NYT or the WaPo because besides carrying the best of the NYT or the WaPo, they’ll provide the other stuff, too.
They’re kinda like the NPR of the toobz. And like NPR, they are funded by viewer contributions. They deserve whatever they can get. I’m a regular contributor.
TruthOut.org and FDL: A great way to start your day as a well-informed citizen.
Bob in HI
peanutbutter @ 110
Um, I think it is more than the style of dress. I’m black, and was just a bit younger than most of those kids at the time. In any case, that, in itself, is nothing to argue about. I agree that it sure is different now in terms of the way gays are regarded. Some folks I’ve known most of my life have surprised the hell out of me recent years. In terms of how they view gay rights, I mean. I no longer argue. I simply tell them that they should never again voice a complaint to me about being slighted or discriminated against because they are black, because they no longer have the moral authority to do so.
Donita Sparks @ 96
Hi, Donita! Thank you for answering! In December, I’ll be there in your shows, my presence is totally confirmed! I want to talk with you there, too! And my English is good, so, we’ll talk a lot! Have a good night! (In Portuguese, “Tenha uma boa noite”!)
Jonathan @ 96
I came late to a thread the other night, and saw you were listening to Joseph Szigeti (sp?). I was impressed. Not many people could saw a violin the way he could, and even fewer appreciated it.
jonathan at 96 says-”
Is there anyone here who just loves music?”
YES!!!!!!!!!
that would be me……..
just cuz a new thread is started, doesn’t mean you have to leave, takes a while for the new one to build up anyway……just sayin’…
a pet peeve……..
eureka and ls……..i love marvin……..
finifinito @ 102
He was an average looking guy, about 6ft with gotee and glasses. He would wear suspenders sometimes, and always had his pants pulled up high.
Donita Sparks @ 101
He was enjoying himself and he didn’t pay any one no mind. It just felt a little creepy with him asking me if I wanted to dance with the puppet.
So here’s my Soul Train story.
About a year ago I was asked to edit “The Best of Soul Train.” The show’s still on the air but they haven’t shot a new episode in a couple years. So they just repackage a bunch of the old shows. It was maybe the most fun gig I ever had, watching the Soul Train Line all day long. It’s true that Don zealously guards the copyright – I’m surprised you found any of them on YouTube.
But this was the best part. The office is in Beverly Hills. Midway through my first day, the producer came in and handed me a key, saying “this is for the bathroom, it’s out the door and through the hallway to the left.” I asked, “what about that bathroom right there,” pointing to the one I used a minute earlier.
“NO! That’s Don Cornelius’ personal bathroom!”
So, take away the knowledge that, somewhere in Beverly Hills, there’s a bathroom that’s only been used by me, and Don Cornelius.
dday @ 127
That is effin’ priceless :-).
dday—-
hilarious!!!!!!!!!!! nowadays, i would want my own bathroom, too…….
don cornelius……….jammin’ cool.
lucky you, those shows bring such fond memories………we lived in a mixed neighborhood then, and EVERYONE watched it……..every single week…………wow, what a time to be a teen………..
Take me to the river, Donita.
Did someone say dance party? Yeah baby…
Wait a minute. I’m all alone here. I gotta dance by myself. Well, okay then!
Boy, after spending the day spitting at the computer screen, that was like an ice cold beer.
Where did the Funk go?
