GregD over at Belgravia Dispatch has been thinking about Iraq policy.
It’s grossly negligent (at best) that American kids are dying for strategic incoherence on such an epic scale. If I were a diplomat at the State Department, I’d probably resign in protest rather than continue to serve an Administration bleeding American lives so irresponsibly. Arming Sunni militias (sorry, Concerned Citizens Programmes) rather than the National Army, as nascent and pitable as this last is, will almost certainly lead to more intensified Sunni–Shi’a fighting. Meantime, these bolstered Sunni forces (some of them simply ex-Baathists we supposedly went in to topple) will eventually be fighting for primacy against the very Government we’ve been trying to prop up in Baghdad. I find this mind-boggling in its short-sightedness and lack of overarching strategic direction (unless we’ve truly become Machiavellian, and are plotting to return the Sunnis to power to contain Iran!)
Yon Bradrocket hath a plan:
Next week, I expect to read that we’ve started releasing packs of hungry bears and pumas loose in Baghdad to ensure that neither the Sadrists nor the ex-Baathists get too much of an upper hand.
I think it’s brilliant.
What, you have a better idea?
Krauthammer sure thinks he does:
We should have given up on Nouri al-Maliki long ago and begun to work with other parties in the Iraqi parliament to bring down the government, yielding either a new coalition of less sectarian parties or, as Pollack has suggested, new elections.
The choice is difficult because replacing the Maliki government will take time and because there is no guarantee of ultimate political success. Nonetheless, continuing the surge while finally trying to change the central government is the most rational choice because the only available alternative is defeat — a defeat that is not at all inevitable and that would be both catastrophic and self-inflicted.
What I see here is a Future Republican Talking Point a-borning. “The Surge would have worked if only the Iraqi government had a real leader instead of Nouri al-Maliki.”
So basically, we’re going to either:
a.) Topple the Iraqi government through “other parties” in the country (*COUGH!* Military coup! Go Chalabi! *COUGH!*)
-OR-
b.) Force the Iraqis to vote until they elect a government we approve of.
That seems to be the plan.
In other words, “Democratize, you stupid bitchez, and that means elect somebody we like, or we’ll water-board your sorry asses ’til you do.”
Me, I like the Bears and Pumas. It makes about as much sense as partitioning the place.
UPDATE: Ooooh! Now it’s a full-on pledge drive.
Please. Help send bears and pumas to Iraq.
Together, we can make a difference.

boing – forward dive, twisting the whole time (in honor of Rep. McNerney’s spin), in the freefall position (trying not to land amongst the hungry bears and pumas)
g’evening everyone
I’m with Al on this one….they want two dictatorships, one over there, so we can have one over here.
Yes, I’m fond of twisting that phrase, that’s twice tonight.
the last thread left me sad and discouraged.
Boy, I feel really discouraged after the McNerney “chat.” Thanks for the pic of Sir K in his twirly hat to lift my spirits.
I am worn out from reading all of the comments from the last thread.
I already told ‘em to fuck off.
OldCoastie @ 7
I concur…
Funny and fast.

707!
Mauimom @ 8
Sorry, mauimom, but it almost made me toss my cookies.
What kind of fuckery was that last thread? How can it be so hard to say no more money for an occupation?
Suzanne @ 5
Dang, Ma Cheri, you didn’t even buy the spin, eh??? *g*
The last thread felt like AAAAARRRGGHHHHRRRRR!!!!ok.
My dialup hates 400-post threads. I take it McNerney failed to please the judges?
Deep cleansing breath, everyone.
Let go of all that negative energy.
It’s time for Inappropriate Yoga Guy.
Mmmmmm. Goji berries.
LS @ 17
Nice to vent it out, eh?
EvilDrPuma @ 18
Iraqi’s gave Jerry a 1
Evil Dr – a whole lotta “we’ve got to talk the repugs into coming along” and no fight whatsoever.
Evening all! I came late to the party and was only able to read through the last thread. I agree that although Rep. McNerney was willing to come and participate in the forum, he seemed not to have answered much. The repetition of the veto-proof majority line especially galled me.
Kudos to the FDL gang for setting it up and conducting the whole thing in a civil manner!
madmommy @ 23
We should seal the whole thread off right away before the trolls come.
That is a great shot of Krauthammer. It captures the essence of the man. The only thing that would be better would be a picture showing him hooked up to IV KoolAid.
All of this “we haven’t lost yet in Iraq” rhetoric is to convince us that Bush and the Republicans are not to blame. The truth is that this is Bush’s war, the Republicans’ war, and he and they lost it a long time ago.
LS @ 17
yeah anyway.
maybe we should go back to funkytown
ccmask @ 21
The Bulgarians would have been impressed with the sheer skepticism…!!! ;-)
shit goes on and on and on…it wont stop til dems get their cajones back
TRex @ 19
That video got 1,778,585 views? Jeebus.
OldCoastie @ 22
Yeah, because they’re such rational souls, always willing to discuss an issue in a spirit of good faith and reasonable compromise, right? Did McNerney say which god(s) he was planning to beseech for this miracle?
And to think, McNerney is almost (not quite) as good as it gets in the House.
That’s depressing.
That AJ dude really pissed me off on the last thread.
And thank you Jonathon for turning me on to Mendelssohn the thread before that.
Yeah – two hours plus of great points made by FDLers and same ol’ “we have to get a veto-proof majority” answers from the congressman. Waste of time . . .
I am going to be more sympathetic toward Nancy and Harry. Jerry is supposed to be one of the “good ones” can you imagine listening to that shit from more than half of your caucus. How the fuck do they stay sane? The Dems really don’t have the votes in either house.
I love how people sit around in their American homes filled with American dollars wearing their American beanie-hats licking their American lollipops — and speculate about replacing other peoples’ governments.
Has Krauthammer forgotten the magical day of purple fingers, when we celebrated Iraki sovereignty? What about the moving ceremony when Viceroy Bremer turned over his vast powers (except for laws governing our mercenaries) that had to be held a day early so he could get the hell outta Dodge without being killed?
Krauthammer did say one true thing, though, which was true when we invaded, remains true through our occupation, and will remain true until the end of time:
So profound, and so well-paid for it.
If Saddam was back and running for the new government leader job in Iraq, would he ask his constituents “Are you better off than you were 4 years ago?”–Bill Maher
TRex @ 24
Sadly, you’re probably right. Amazingly to me, something like this would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. Gotta luv the toobz!
wangdangdoodle @ 32
He was rather rude…
Loo Hoo. @ 15
Ain’t you right, LooHoo!!
Unfortunately, I fear McNerney was too into “explaining,” and the only thing he could offer was the “veto-proof majority” meme.
Instead of ’splainin’, he should have just listened. You don’t get input from folks like Joe Wilson any too often, and it’s best to treasure it, think on it, act on it.
The “VPM” [Veto-Proof Majority] is just weak, weak, weak, and shows an inclination to grasp onto something [an “anchor” someone called it] rather than recognizing the complexity and just general fuckedness of the situation.
What the Dems ought to be doing is echoing what’s in the minds of the American people: “who got us into the fucking mess, and how are we going to get out.” Oh, yeah, some of them have a little complicity in the first part of that, so there’s a problem. . .
Suzanne @ 5
No splash, and not a scratch! Even the Bulgarian judge must be impressed!
Joe Wilson rocked, of course. As usual.
TeddySanFran @ 35
that is such a wonderful picture TRex, and commentary
Hey, TRex. Glad you liked my “tea dancing with Republicans” reference. That’s what it feels like to me.
wangdangdoodle @ 32
Welcome. I like especially his 3rd and 4th symphonies and the Hebrides Overture. His violin concerto is fantastic also.
CTuttle @ 38
He was? I missed that part. But I liked the Mendelssohn.
Frankly with all these clever people on this web site, it boggles the mind why some of these congress critters don’t avail themselves of some of these internet slackers.
McNerney seemed way out of his depth. Odd that is.
I gotta wonder if McNerney even knew that was THE Joe Wilson…
When is Joe Wilson going to run for something? Or has he had enough of his family being ripped at by the teeth of the wolves?
KathieinMN @ 33
No, not a waste of time at all.
Regardless of how McNerney does or doesn’t change his actions, the presence of FDL on the political stage took a huge leap forward. FDL readers spoke their minds, and it will be interesting to see how their pocketbooks follow.
Jerry may or may not have wasted his time, but mine was well spent.
wangdangdoodle @ 45
Oh bloody hell!! You mean AJ. I thought at first your meant Jonathon.
D’oh!!!
Shadowstalker @ 48
I honestly wouldn’t blame him if he had. It’s not like he’s not out there doing his part….
TRex @ 19
this guy is good too;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXgdSOxaCGI
Shadowstalker @ 48
Can you blame him for not running for anything? I can only imagine the tanker-loads of slime that would be heaped upon him and his family. Sadly, it seems that the people we most need just do not wish to wallow in the mud with pigs.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!
Please see above for an important update.
wangdangdoodle @ 45
Ah, Wang, AJ, not Jonathon, nor mendelsohn…
ccmask @ 36
Which is, incidentally, exactly why Bush had him hanged.
KathieinMN @ 33
Bingo!! But at least this year I won’t waste my money again, nor will I ask my friends to do the same.
Joe W would make a kick ass Sec of State.
I suspect McN is going to be worrying about someone running against his ass next go round if he doesn’t walk the walk.
CTuttle @ 55
Yeah, I’m slow. I figured it out above…
EvilDrPuma @ 30
I would agree with your point if Bush were the worst President in out history or something but as it is . . . oh, wait.
TRex @ 54
I say, screw that. Send in some rabid Republican weasels, they’re a dime a dozen.
OldCoastie @ 7
Not me. Quite the contrary. My spirits were lifted by the all the bright, passionate and aware questioners.
If you think about it for a moment, you just witnessed the pulse of this nation’s heart.
And it is beating stronger than ever.
Who could doubt that what we saw was the true voice of the millions we live beside?
One politico’s voice drowned out by the sea of the people.
I’m refreshed in my belief of the supremacy of US!
TRex @ 54
If you don’t support the bears and pumas, the terrorists will win!
EvilDrPuma @ 61
I know a few I’ll help send.
Agh. Every time I see a picture of that jackass Krauthammer, I think of that character the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
He waved lollipops around, too, and was about as generous as Krauthammer.
I love sadly no’s “Dr. Strangekraut Lovehammer”
That is too damn funny–especially in that hat!!
madmommy….
I think that the two factors are connected. We need them because they don’t wish to wallow with the pigs. We’re all up to our eyebrows in mud slung from those pigs.
TRex @ 19
Well, when Petrocelli comes on back home, we’ll see some serious Yoga help, I’m sure.!! Miss the rascal.
Peterr @ 49
Having spent the last week in a fight with Real Estate agents employing similar rhetorical techniques, I hope you are correct. But I came to the thread late. So I just scanned on “McNerney says” and found myself very disappointed. Then I saw that Joe Wilson had commented, and Jerry never replied, so I was doubly disappointed. In fact, I doubt that Kobe would be disarmed by such a lame head scratch.
Oh joy. The Bush and the wife are comming to NOLA for the anniversary. Think he’ll have his sleeves rolled up? Have we not suffered enough???
Peterr @ 49
Well, that is true, Peterr. I just thought over that period of time his thoughts or explanations might have expanded. it is true, however – every FDL venture like this is a major leap for the importance of the blog’s presence and influence in the political arena. Thanks for your comments.
I sent an email to my rep asking where she might be having any public meetings with her constituents during the recess. Imagine my surprise at not hearing back from Ms. Kay Baily-Hutchison.
Suzanne @ 64
I’d have thought that EDP would have been in favor of sending puma, but upon further reflection, perhaps sending another species might be more appropriate.
madmommy @ 70
Think he’ll get his shirt buttoned correctly this time?
Peterr @ 73
Bears and pumas didn’t start this war. Weasels and toads did.
That was one piss-poor performance by McNerney.
Take him off Blue America – pronto!
EvilDrPuma @ 75
I hear there were snakes in the grass involved as well.
You can call me rude.
Just don’t call me late for the impeachment hearings.
Shadowstalker @ 67
I agree, but it is a hard thing to subject your family and friends to what passes for political discourse these days. Don’t the Wilson’s have young children? There are some seriously psycho elements out there that would concern me greatly were I in his shoes and considering a run for any office.
I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in the last thread for managing to stay civil and respectful. If I had contributed to his campaign I wouldn’t have been able to contain myself. Now let’s all sit down, join hands and repeat the McNerney Mantra – Veto Proof Majority … Veto Proof Majority … ommmm
I appreciated McNerney coming to comment but I wish there had been answers. I will take him at his word that he will go back through the questions.
What I am kind of tired of is the Blame-it-on-the-Iraqis mindset that numerous politicians caught up in. Our politicians seem to forget that they set the table for this fuck-up in the first place. Starting with Bush.
Peterr @ 77
And of course… chickenhawks!
Liars and tigers and bears (oh my)
follow the yellow brick road
Oh, Lord forgive me, but I do love that picture of Krauthammer. I think I first came across it at World O’ Crap, trying to give credit where it’s due, but I prefer calling him Cabbagemallet. Gives him a sort of “Gallagher” gravitas…
Mad Dogs @ 62
You know, on balance I agree with this. And, I do think it’s important he braved the waters and jumped in, even if he didn’t say much. I can hope that he does print out the thread and study it over the weekend (I doubt a John Dean [that the chappie?] moment later on). But just having that thread out there, this whole thing, I think we’ve done something quite amazing here.
Anyway, I choose to be optimistic for now :-)
persiflage @ 80

That’s precisely the right frame of thought we want ‘our’ representatives to assimilate…!!! *g*
Mauimom @ 8
He does look particularly fetching in that hat.
Suzanne @ 83
We’re not in Kansas anymore, Suzanne.
wangdangdoodle @ 74
I’ll not be expecting much. Except, of course, horrible traffic snafus, obligatory photo-ops in the 9th Ward, and a steaming pile of BS repeated ad nauseum on the local news.
Barf.
CTuttle @ 11
I was at work. Can you give me a capsule summary of the 300 comments? Or do I need to read through the whole lot? I at least like one of his last comments @ 319 about FISA.
Bob in HI
madmommy @ 94
I trust there will be huge demonstrations. I hope so, anyway.
persiflage @ 80
G’day Sheila, didn’t you just love all the non-answers…?!!! *g*
Evening, everyone.
I think y’all have answered my question before I even got to type it. I was going to ask, “does anyone think anything useful was accomplished in tonight’s McNerney thing?”
I’m still trying to process my thoughts and feelings about it.
I hope the Congressman comes back and reads the entire set of comments at his leisure; it will give a sense of just how passionately average Americans feel about this subject.
Other than that, though … I sure didn’t see anything going on that fits within my definition of “dialogue.” The Congressman had one idea that he wanted to test-market, and far too many of the commenters showed up with nothing more than a closed mind and a desire to vent.
Anyway, enough of that. It’s Friday night. Can we please have some happy tunes, Mr. Orchestra Leader?
persiflage @ 80
You know, I “appreciate,” at a certain level, the efforts of Jane and the rest to keep things “civil.” But to be quite honest, after the fifth or sixth time McNerney refused to answer the question, I would have liked to see one of the hosts rip him a shiny new asshole.
If you’re just going to let a weasel like McNerney stick to his talking points without any overt opposition, there’s really little difference between a chat here and an appearance on “Situation Room” or “This Week.”
bobschacht @ 95
Just search for “McNerney says”. There’s not many, and most of them say “we need a veto proof majority”.
Bob – Persiflage pretty well sums it up:
Bill Maher has a basket of goodies for Jenna: An Iraq mobile for over the crib, a saber sword, baby’s first FISA kit (tins cans and string)and a little t-shirt that says “911 changed everything but my diaper”
bobschacht @ 95
Shorter Jerry: veto proof majority work with the rethugs – veto proof veto proof veto proof
TeddySanFran @ 88
As a former Chicago person and SF area person, let’s be clear: there’s Da Bears (a la Mike Ditka), and then there’s the Bears. Enjoy the scenery, Teddy!
does anyone think anything useful was accomplished in tonight’s McNerney thing?
Yes, it showed who you SHOULDN’T be donating any money or time to.
Twain @ 96
There probably could be about 250,000 protesting, if they weren’t spread out all over the country. I wonder who’s left?
wangdangdoodle @ 41
Which made me think even more about the previous thread where people had names the same as other posters. This is a serious flaw in the FDL system, and one we may need to pay to fix. Imagine some whack job coming here and posting as Joe.
CTuttle @ 97
Seems to me that since we can’t have a veto-proof majority until 2009 at the earliest, the question our congresscritters need to be asking themselves is whether they want to be part of it at all.
bobschacht @ 95
Heh, you dog, saddle me with a synopsis, eh??? Maybe, 10-15 noncommittal non-answers…!!! *g*
Loo Hoo. @ 107
That was clearly Joe.
as i said — questions we got questions galore — answers hmmmmmmmmmm not so much – he talked around most pertinent questions – oh well
wangdangdoodle @ 72
I’m shocked, SHOCKED . . .
Watertiger was rude to Rudy again.
dave@99
Me too, but TRex works at night. It’s hard to rip new ones while spinning mellow classical tunes.
Well, the problem with McNerney talking about a veto proof majority is that he had no strategy for creating one. Nor was he able to enunciate what such a majority was likely to vote for. What would be the absolute essentials, the red lines, of their position? He did mention a date certain but what does that mean exactly? Now or in x number of Friedman units?
It reminds me of the suggestions of some Iraq war critics that we needed to send more troops to secure the country. The small wrinkle in that plan was that those troops were not simply unavailable they didn’t exist.
I got the same feeling from McNerney. It’s a good plan if you can do it, but . . .err, you can’t.
SanderO @ 46
He struck me not so much as naive (which he is) but sort of . . . not all that bright.
Twain @ 96
If so they won’t be covered. And since no one is allowed to worry GWB”S pretty mind with facts they would be positioned so far away as to be inconsequential. Most folks are working, at jobs and what is left of their homes.
The latest is the city has evidently demolished several homes and a church. It appears that these buildings had been gutted and secured and the grass was cut. Loyola is working on a class-action suit. People have been complaining for a while about blighted property, some from pre-K and some since. Seems a shame, with so many properties that need to come down before they fall down, the city has stepped in it again.
Loo Hoo. @ 107
“Joe Wilson” on the previous thread was indeed THE Joe Wilson. That’s why the mods get the big bucks.
Where others have used the names of public figures, they have been asked to adopt different nome de plumes. (For example the commenter who first appeared as “From the Desk of Patrick J. Fitzgerald”.)
dave @ 105
Interesting thought — are you willing to play with it for a sec?
Suppose that no alternative to McNerney emerges that progressives would say works for them. Then what? Do you continue to support him, on the theory that he’s still better than the Republican candidate? Or do you sit 2008 out?
Loo Hoo. @ 107
Hmmm… LooHoo, you’re not giving the mods here at the Lake, their due admiration…!!! ;-)
He’s in over his head. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
We need a new model in that district. Nice try… Next candidate please.
The goils at the lake are very into politeness. We were. But he sat there like someone who didn’t do their homework and had no answers for the questions. Very very disappointing performance.
I wouldn’t be expecting no brilliant op eds coming from this fella. He’s gone fishing.
EvilDrPuma @ 89
I don’t know about that but Mitch McConnell often shows up in such situations.
CTuttle @ 97
G’day Chikka. My general impression is that the guy is sincere otherwise why would he subject himself to the barrage of very polite criticism? Yup, I think he’s smart, sincere, and wrong.
Hugh @ 115
But it’s really not a good plan, either, because it makes anyone seeking accommodation patsies of the GOP. Their words are twisted by TradMed to make it sound like Democrats are seeking a third way. Finally, there aren’t any GOP ‘critters who’ll come over unless it’s in secret.
The thing about the “veto proof majority” that gets me is, it wouldn’t matter. Congress had one of them over the SCHIP bill, too, and Bush turned right around and gutted it anyway.
LS @ 110
Yes, but Loo Hoo has a point. What if someone coherent showed up posting as wangdangdoodle?
TeddySanFran @ 113
Brain bleach, please.
CTuttle @ 120
And from what Suzanne said last night, the Lurking Mod is definitely . . . admirable.
wangdangdoodle @ 126
Or LS…OMG
It isn’t up to me, but McNerney basically just confirmed that he doesn’t belong on BlueAmerica. I appreciate him clarifying that for us.
I wonder if Krauthammer would be so “nuts” if he hadn’t broken his neck. The really strange thing is I think I saw the accident from a distance in ‘73(?).
wangdangdoodle @ 126
To repeat, that’s why the mods get the big bucks.
Shadowstalker @ 48
I’d love to see Joe or Valerie run. Or be on Hillary’s cabinet.
McNerney seems not to grasp that invading Iraq was wrong, was a fucking war crime.
He seems to subscribe to the notion that, well, we’re there, so we’ve got to find a politically acceptable way out.
This kind of thinking will keep us in Iraq for 50 years.
wangdangdoodle @ 126
We would have known immediately that it wasn’t you. ;-)
persiflage @ 123
M’dear, I admire your succinctness…!!! ;-)
wangdangdoodle @ 126
We’d recognize them as an imposter in an instant *g*!
Peterr @ 132
There’s big bucks? No one told me (laughing) The Mod Squad is made up a a wonderful group of volunteers who donate their time to help keep the Lake the Lake.
dave @ 99
To be fair, the comments were coming fast and furious (I mean really furious) and it would have been difficult to answer them all. Nonetheless, he sounded like a stuck record. I did enjoy his “yes, let’s think outside the box” comment, immediately followed by the Mantra.
Joe Wilson – Manly.
burnspbesq @ 135
Hmmm… can I think about it first??? :P
GordonM @ 137
Dayam straight. We got secret powers but the flying is still beta and I refuse to be the testee.
OldCoastie @ 101
(blushing) Thanks OldCoastie!
LS @ 140
Studly, even.
And huge props to the Mods of the Lake!!
Loo Hoo. @ 133
I believe the phrase that he used was, “There’s too many drugs and too many ex wives in my past for me to ever run for office.”
TRex @ 145
So, he’s not planning to run as a Republican?
Suzanne @ 138
No big bucks. Just yummy desserts.
burnspbesq @ 119
If you’re outside McNerney’s district [as I am] you just don’t donate to him [like I did in 2006]. Instead, you rely on Howie & others to find candidates more deserving of support.
At this point you don’t necessarily spend your energy & $$$ looking for a challenger to McNerney. Support other, better candidates in other districts, and perhaps revisit McNerney in the next go-round.
But for 2008, put your $$$ elsewhere.
Suzanne @ 138
What? You don’t get choice parts on, say, Twin Peaks??
EvilDrPuma @ 146
Crap, there goes another monitor!
:)
Jonathan @ 134
Actually as disappointed as I was, that’s not at all what I got out of his answers. He clearly wanted us out of there, and clearly didn’t think it was a good idea we went in in 2003. He can’t do anything to change *that* so why should he be answerable to that? The question is, what to do now? He had one idea, most of us had quite a different one.
TeddySanFran @ 124
I agree. It’s seems that the unstated Democratic position is that they will temporize through the November elections and then do something in January 2009 when they have a Democratic President and larger working majorities in the House and Senate.
It is a strategy based upon the belief that voters will be less disgusted with Democrats than with Republicans.
TRex @ 145
Well, that pretty much knocked out Giuliani, W, and Rush.
He can’t. He’s not a closeted gay.
TRex@145…
“I believe the phrase that he used was, ‘There’s too many drugs and too many ex wives in my past for me to ever run for office.’ “
Now you’ve made him sound like Ghouliani….
EvilDrPuma @ 146
*sputter* Since when did that impede the current crop of repugs from running…???
Suzanne @ 138
You mean you haven’t gotten your check from George Soros yet either? I thought it was just me.
Wow, Darcy Burner’s fundraiser has over a thousand donors and over $36,000.
Here’s the info on it if you missed it earlier today. Bush is going to Dave Reichert’s district for a big fundraiser on Monday, and the netroots hope to raise big money for his opponent, the fabulous Darcy Burner.
Join me if you’ve got money burning a hole in your pocket tonight. Darcy’s the real deal.
EvilDrPuma @ 146
*zing*!! New keyboard, please!
TRex @ 154
Touche.
TRex @ 154
Who’s going to break the news to Valerie?
Suzanne @ 103
Even if we had veto proof … what makes him think The Decider will honor it?
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 162
Signing statement, anyone?
I’m more worried about Laura Bush.
Jonathan @ 134
Rome burning? Where’s my fiddle?
But he’s not alone, is he? So many hoping that the shithouse will delay going up in flames long enough for them to become an ‘unquestioned’ majority….And for what?
America doesn’t have 50 years, at the current rate of blood and treasure expenditure.
Stale kibble in one’s personal cardboard hut as the general order of the day will come first, and quickly.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 162
Heh, ’signing statements’……..
TeddySanFran @ 158
Hey Teddy! look down at the very bottom!
even better! but it’ll be great when it crosses $100k…
TRex @ 164
I’m not. I doubt she’s even aware of her surroundings.
Peterr @ 161
I imagine she’s known that for some time.
Darkblack!
But I think Bush will need a whole string section, not just one fiddle.
CTuttle @ 166
great minds think alike ;)
peanutbutter @ 150
I guess I missed in his comments what you say. But I didn’t sense any real passion about Iraq on his part. I sensed he sees the whole mess in political terms, not in the incredibly awful and sad human terms.
Hugh @ 152:
Yeah, and that tactic may not work so well for them [the Dems]. But they don’t seem to grasp that — McNerney sure doesn’t.
These guys [Pelosi, Hoyer, Rahm, et al.] just don’t GET IT that their weak, pussy-footing ways are pissing off ALL voters: Dems, Repubs & Independents.
Voters want to vote FOR something [except all the Repubs who’ll come out in Nov. 08 to vote AGAINST Hillary]. They won’t come out to vote for “less horrible than Bush.”
burnspbesq @ 169
Ba dum bum!
Thank you — he’ll be here all week. Try the veal.
EvilDrPuma @ 168
You’ve certainly earned the ‘evil’ nom de guerre…!!!
Peterr @ 170
Don’t make me go all marshmallowy soft on you, Peterr.

burnspbesq @ 119
Both of you are right (in a left way of course) and that is why Jerry will now be able to raise plenty of cash through new dem/blue dogs and we can support new blood or incumbents who have a progressive gloves off attitude, imo.
Mad Dogs @ 62:
Naw, I’m with OldCoastie. What practical good is it for all of us to be oh so enlightened when the Congresscritters — even the few good ones — are (as On-Message-Jerry so clearly demonstrated) so resolutely, prophylactically impervious to it? Jerry desperately needs a Plan B because until and unless such time as the BushCo machine is already falling apart for other reasons, the veto-proof majority is just a sad pale shadow of a weak mockery of a sham of a false god.

I don’t think it would matter if I got a bigger bed. My offspring are like bread dough, they expand to fill all available space. How is it possible that a 4 year old kid weighing less than 40 pounds can take up an entire bed? Then there’s the 6 year old sideways at the bottom. Wonder why my back hurts every morning?
burnspbesq @ 119
I think the people in charge of distributing the “netroots” money should sit down with Jerry and explain: if you want the cash and the volunteers from us that won you the last election, you better start toeing the line before the next one. Otherwise, we wish you well in your future endeavors, but our resources are limited, so…
While it’s nice to have a Dem in that district, there’s plenty of places for the progressive dollar to go. Frankly, I think McNerney knows this, and is looking to sell himself to the DLC crowd.

Now for the first time in nearly eight weeks, my phone isn’t broken anymore.

TRex @ 262
Maybe you should get out more : )
OK, I get that McNerney did not satisfy the Firepups. I was one of those who supported him during the election season last year. But I think we do need to keep things in perspective:
1. Surely McNerney is to be preferred to Pombo.
2. Would McNerney’s district re-elect someone as progressive as we might want?
3. What is the alternative?
Here in Hawaii, as I pointed out earlier, a long-time gay-bashing Republican wants to become a Democrat. Such a large “Tent” helps to promote a veto-proof majority, and with that, the Hawaii State Legislature has over-ridden 11 vetoes by our Republican Governor over the past year. But it can also lead to (*cough*) less than courageous stands on important issues.
Bob in HI

madmommy @ 263
You weren’t here when we all got to preview the phone and then wait for it to arrive.
One cheer for veto proof majority: I think only a veto override will provide political and legal muscle required to get Cheney-Bush to do anything. If he vetoes and it is sustained, then he will just keep funding and say to Congress ‘waddya going to do? I’m the Decider CommanderChief handling a national security emergency here and I got the right to shift this money for our troops.’ You got no override for veto, you got no votes to stop that.
So, no veto override majority, I think you are left with symbolic actions and more executive stuffing it to Congress. That might be good for Dems politically, but it means not much actually done until Bush leaves office.
And you get a veto proof override for withdrawal and appropriations, you might have veto proof majority for other things that need to be done wrt Iraq.
But we will probably know soon after September whether a veto proof majority is possible. If September con job is successful, GOPers will delude themelves into walking into disaster next November, and I don’t think there would be any GOPer votes for withdrawal or anything else that needs to be done in region.
So, I am not down on Mcnerney right now for talking that way, during recess. If he keeps chasing for a whole Friedman unit after it is clear GOPers will, then that will be bad. And I will write him to let him know that.
He does need to learn how to talk with press.
TRex, your comments on the McNerney thread were really excellent. I know your views, and you put these into words I “got”. Thanks.
bobschacht @ 264
This is why politics can no longer be left to the politicians. And why, at some point, the spineless must pay a price. Because if the “veto proof majority” ends up allowing legislation to be passed that is as bad (or nearly as bad) as a “non veto proof” congress, what is the difference?

I drooled over it for like a year and then I ordered it and it took, like, twice as long as I thought it would to come, and then it got here and I hadn’t had it for three weeks when it fell off the nightstand, bounced off the Mag Lite I keep by the bed, and cracked its little screen.
I described it as not so much the feeling of breaking something valuable as the feeling you get when you’re chopping onions or something and you cut yourself really deeply. The metallic taste in the mouth, the hot and cold all over. I was too gutted to even swear.
Then I ordered a faceplate from Germany.

One of the few saving graces of the “Blame it all on Maliki” talking point is that Maliki seems willing and able to hit back. As for Chalabi, I still don’t see how he’s ever going to be installed as PM. It’d be like our Supreme Court deciding Bush v Gore in favor of Ralph Nader.

Booga booga! The world is scary. And only *I* can keep you safe!
TeddySanFran @ 315
The problem with this assumption is very simple: we were virgins on 9/11. Remember that during both WW I and WW II COTUS (the Continental US) was never effectively attacked. So we had never had to deal with it the way the Brits had with the ship losses in WW I or the Blitz in WW II. (Note that the response of Britain to their attacks has been far different from ours. Part of that is their national character, but a lot of it is just a society memory that goes back to the grim awareness that “it can happen here.”
We’re not virgins any more.
If the terrorists get through again in a significant way, don’t expect to see anything like the same response. The first thing the dem’s MUST say is, “THE WAR ON TERROR DOESN’T WORK, DOES IT? DUH!” and just keep hammering that message home. And expect a lot of people to say, as bill maher did tonight, “Bush 0, Terrorists 2. That’s enough; two strikes and you’re out in this game!”
Beer run, potty break, ciggie.

I don’t know why she is catching shit..she is right..another “attack” would give the Republicans a huge advantage in the ‘98 election..because there wouldn’t be a ‘08 election.
althespook @ 273
It is one thing to negotiate and compromise with an opponent who has a reputation for operating in good faith. It is another thing to beg and plead with an opponent who never compromises, and treats you with contempt.
McNerney has apparently awakened and smelled the coffee about Republicans and the FISA debacle. His guard is finally up about that (see him @319).
What I would have said to McNerney if I hadn’t been at work is this: What was true about the FISA legislation is also true about legislation concerning the Occupation of Iraq. You were not elected last November to make kissy-poo with President Bush and the Republicans. You were elected to confront their idiocy. Attempting to compromise with them only makes you look weak and indecisive. The only “veto-proof majority” possible with them is to capitulate and abandon all resistance. And that is unacceptable. Get real, Jerry!

I hope so, but fear that if another attack comes the tattered shreds of the Constitution will be sacrificed on the altar of revenge. Frank Probst @ 323
Chalabi is part of the government right now, just kept out of sight. He runs the part of the government that decides if an old baath party member has been “de-baathified” and can have a job again (teachers, scientitsts, engineers, doctors. etc.) Needless to say lots of bribe money is flowing, but he still keeps the approvals to a trickle. And he is a major money player with interests all over the region (most of it dirty, jordan convicted him in absentia for bank fraud) and he is very solid with the elites in iran (NOT the mullahs AFAIK but the older, peacock throne families who are grinding their teeth under the current regine. That’s why washington LIKEE him, he wants regime change in Iran even more than they do..
And he’ll get into power via a creative process like this: he’ll be on the council of the new dictatorship (see ravings if you haven’t but I presume you have or you wouldn’t be discussing Chalabi) but at the tail end. Then the top guy (allawi or whoever) buys it in a sectarian attack or whatever (or has a convenient heart attack). Nobody can agree on a replacement, so chalabi takes the job “on an interim basis”. We all know how long “temporary emergencies” and “interim bases” last. Q.E.D.

oh there will be revenge, but i don’t think the mindless stampede of 9/11 will be repeated. Remember that only flies at the 24% level now. If the other 76% don’t stampede, the constitution will be just fine…and I don’t think they will.

Off to bed, the Hillary story is a riff on the old it’s always good for the Republicans. If there is no terrorist attack, then they have successfully shown they could protect the country. If there is a terrorist attack, then voters will turn to them because they are strong on security. You would think that Hillary would have gotten wise to this scam but apparently not.
madmommy @ 350
Your are NOT a spaz. Now that i’ve got a full time helper around here (hired yesterday thus my non-presence) i can do some things I want to do, like put up posts on my blogswarm about how to link, how to get “f”ed, all of it. I think in this case Hillary is saying she’s the only one who can “protect” the Democrats from the Republican attacks.
But in the past, she has certainly used the more general fearmongering–invoking 9/11 to remind people how dangerous the world is.
I just read the first couple chapters of Al Gore’s book The Assault on Reason today. He writes about the fearmongering thing, and how it makes it harder for people to approach issues with a reasoned approach. The Bush administration has been using that approach for years. But Hillary uses it too, in my opinion.

Smart to get it out there now.
Loo Hoo. @ 15
It’s easy, but would be ineffective.
For one, it wouldn’t actually force the hand of King Bush.
Second, the Republicans would beat us with it like step children they hate.
Most presidents respond to losing their public approval rating. This one isn’t, so we need a more massive Congressional advantage (to impeach and convict) or we need to simply replace the president (next election), whichever can be done first.
I say we should get rid of AG Gonzales…make a show of it for the public. Then, if the iron is hot, go after Veep Cheney…again a show to convince the public of what is going on. That ought to help in a big national way to bring the public around. Aside from that we could use targeted campaigns (mostly t.v. ads I suppose) for the states where Republicans might be convinced to come around to support removal of Bush & Co. to avoid their own upcoming election loss.
Effectiveness is more important than showy entertainment. Soldier’s lives are on the line.

But, the candidates aren’t just one-dimensional. It isn’t just the anti-Iraq-War policy they’re proposing. Don’t Progressives stand for a lot of other things too?
Show leadership in getting us back on track to find and fight the people who attacked us on 9/11 while rebuilding good relationships internationally and improving world trade agreements to make them more fair and safe. Parallel to that, work on health care reform, infrastructure refurbishments and a whole lot of other domestic things.
Progressives are multi-dimensional thinkers.

The Republicans are frantically building lots of boxes for Democrats to run around in, and I think Hillary is showing she might be happy to do that. To my way of thinking Obama has already shown that.
I don’t know if Edwards is smarter, but he seems to have a different world view which is better.
It’s not really fair or realistic of us to know the Dem politicians are hearing the constant stream of goo the Republicans put out and to still expect them to not incorporate some of that in their thinking. We are all, to some extent, responding to our environment.
We just keep looking for the best candidate and in time it becomes more and more apparent.

If things get tough, you can always morph to a “Bitch with a Badger.”

I “entered”: “DSCC: Supporting Dems who won’t oppose Bush.”
Do ya think they’ll choose it?
