On Sunday, the FDL Book Salon will be hosted by Jim Himes who is running against Chris Shays in CT-04. He’ll be moderating the discussion of The Political Brain with author Drew Westen. Jim is a great candidate and a thoughtful guy, and when he was here a few weeks ago chatting with Howie Klein in a Blue America session he mentioned that he was reading this book so we thought we’d have him back to discuss it.
I’d also like to note that Jim is already doing amazing things for the district. Does anyone think it’s just a coincidence that Jim is an affordable housing guy, and in July Shays got a $6 million grant from the federal government for…affordable housing? Not that Karl Rove is politicizing the government, mind you. Just because Shays got more than 25 grants totalling over $46 million between April, 2006 and election day shouldn’t make Henry Waxman suspicious that the White House was funneling money into the districts of vulnerable Republicans in order to illegaly influence elections, and Shays is probably right, Waxman is probably just conducting a “partisan witch hunt.” (/snark) Still, it’s great that Chris Van Hollen of the DCCC was up in Norwalk supporting Himes this week. It’s hard enough to run against GOP election money, let alone the coffers of the federal government.
But the real question — and yes, it must be asked — has Shays become as crazy as a peach-orchard boar? Even the mainstream media seems to think so — the Fairfield County Weekly asks “18 trips to Iraq later, has Chris Shays lost his mind?” and you can see reporters tip-toeing around around the subject of his mental stability here (lest they they set off bughouse Grampa Chris and all hell break loose).
No doubt Himes will be able to put to good use much of the wisdom gleaned from The Political Brain. It was written by a shrink, and Shays certainly needs one.

“The political brain” hella title!
peanutbutter @ 1
Meaning, you can read that a couple of different ways…sounds like a very interesting book, okay off to tell downstairs…
How low can the numbers go for Bush and congress?

I’m a doctor (Ed.D) take two of these and call me in the morning!
1,577 dayz and the killin’ goez on and on and..
Citizen Hamsher and the Firepup Patriots:
The real question is: why haven’t people discovered Shays’ insanity long before now?
KEEP THE FAITH BUT VERIFY!!
OT: Here is WaPo’s list of who is supporting Ari Fleischer’s pro-war ad project, Freedom’s Watch. And here is Justin Raimondo’s commentary, which includes expanded biographies of those folks.
I haven’t heard that one in twenty years.
I was trying to find that outrageously inappropriate comment that Congressman Shays made to (I can’t remember who) about ripping off clothes and screaming.
Kathleen @ 8
He was despicable toward the Katrina victims in the hearing they had.
Good afternoon. Glad everyone else was up early and holding down the peach orchard. Love that one, Jane. Keep them coming.
Hi Jane:
While the subject is important, I’m really astounded that you use stigmatizing terms throughout the post about mental illness. Are returning vets with PTSD as “crazy as peach-orchard boars”? Mental illness is stigmatized more than enough. If you really believe in the inherent worth and dignity of all persons, then please reflect that in your writing. Ad hominem attacks have no place in civil discourse – or anywhere.
LS @ 9
I believe this was a statement made in response during the FISA hearings

Thanks
From the AP via today’s Hartford Courant: Shays calls Dems investigations of politics a witch hunt
Speaking of political brains, EPU’d on the last thread was my post about Hawaii, where long-time gay-bashing Republican Mike Gabbard allasudden wants to become a Democrat (see link to thread downstairs for details and links). Maybe Shays should just declare that he wants to become a Democrat.

bobschacht @ 15
Hey, last time I was there they had laws about posters for election so people got in big groups at intersections and waved like hell. The first time I saw it I though, damn, these folks are friendly. Do ya’ll still do that?
I’m on page 102 of The Political Brain. So far, I’m impressed.
I was looking through youtube on Shays and came across a radio interview…bad annoying audio, where Shays states that he believed Bill C. raped someone. He should have been sued for that.
N=1 @ 11
You’re the second person in a couple days to gripe about “ad hominem” attacks. Does that mean people around here should forego calling warmongers “chickenhawks” or that they should omit mention of Bush’s truncated National Guard service when he gives a speech comparing Iraq to Vietnam? Invective and insults aren’t the same thing as “ad hominem” attacks, which often have their place in spirited debate, at least among people who aren’t pollyannas. That said, when a Congressman’s demeanor is inappropriate, when he’s rude, gabby, irritable and incoherent, it’s fair to suggest, even if only in jest, that he might be unfit for office. Someone’s always going to take offense at something. Come on.
brendan @ 19
You know what Roseann Roseanna Danna said, “It’s always something”!
Someone’s always going to take offense at something. Come on.
It’s oversight-hearing withdrawal, I’m tellin’ ya.
Well, that and the fact that the R’s are *using* the month of August, while the D’s are still all in hiding after the FISA vote.
Actually I rather like the “It’s Jane’s Blog and she can say whatever the fuck she wants” but that’s just me.
raven1 @ 22
I concur.
Plausible deniability — “We were on vacation!”. Who could have predicted what BushCo might do during recess?”
raven1 @ 22
Ding!
brendan @ 19
Ad hominem is attacking the character and the essence of the person. To use stigmatizing labels for mental illness is below the belt, and doing that is very distinct from using a chickenhawk label and the like. One can make a point about the deficiencies of another’s behavior and actions without invoking demeaning and stigmatizing labels. This isn’t the only progressive blog which employs an inconsistent a double standard. However, I would like to think that once made aware of it, that the stigmatizing and demeaning would diminish and eventually be eliminated altogether. If not, I am aware that I can always choose to visit sites that do attempt to hold discourse without ad hominem attacks.
bobschacht @ 15
I was aghast when I read that in the paper the other day, Bob!!! No way will he supplant Neil or Mazie!
epu’d:
For Selise, yes, I should have that panel on video. It’s on of about 60 raw video captures we have of the SL broadcasts we did. We’re working feverishly, if episodically to edit them and get them up on the web. I didn’t expect to be an archival source for YK, so I am hoping we have everything. One panel, with Glenn G, Jay Carney and others is apparently corrupted.
For Jane: Hi yourself. Nice to finally meet you.
for *xyz: thanks for the conversation in the hallway at YKos on ending the occupation. I found it insightful.
Finally, for whoever said they are keeping the bases secret, they are not. George Packer visited two, and reported on them in the New Yorker. James Fallows has reported on them as well.
The situation is worse than keeping the bases and plans for permanent occupation secret. It’s not a secret. It’s just that nobody dares talk about it because all hell will break loose, and they know it. And that includes the Democratic candidates.
raven1 @ 16
They’ve severely restricted when and where they can do it, due to accidents that have occurred! But, we still allow it!!!
TRex @ 23
Given your “let’s all hate” post the other night, and the general agreement that ad hominem is just okie dokie here, I’ll be movin’ right along. Not my cuppa.

It’s Friday…I declare national beer thirty. Peace.
Yeah, N=1, go easy. We’re all on the same side here — if I might be so presumptuous.
Shays is just down right mean spirited. He’s got his. Unfortunately, his mental health is in tact. He’d be a kinder person otherwise. Shays reminds me of an old friend of mine who spent some time with her Ambassador husband in one of the African countries. Her son was nine years old and with them. I always thought how wonderful to have your parents living in other countries. You would learn so much.
She told me an incident that took place that reminds me of what Chris Shays may have been like as a little boy. They stopped at a large village for what reasons I no longer remember. There was a terrible famine in the countryside. Starvation surrounded them. The children stared at their luxury car with vacant eyes, distended stomachs and the pain of malnutrition on their faces. Suddenly, there was a commotion around them. When she looked over her nine year old son was munching on his treats, taunting the starving children with what he had and they didn’t, smirking at them. She was so enraged that she literally jumped on him, grabbed his treats away and was screaming at him. The driver pulled her off. She said she never could relate to her son. He had no compassion and had a cruel streak that was beyond her understanding. Her final statement to me was, “I couldn’t believe this came out of my body.”
I wonder if Chris Shays mother says something similar.
retirin’ in five @ 33
Aw, everybody get’s a case of the ass like a russian bear now and then!
Cool!
I’ll go tell my boss.
Is it Ad Hominem for Shays to accuse B. Clinton of being a rapist?
Folks – It’s tough being out here during recess, being pounded every day with dangerous garbage by the Bushites. But, every time they read us snarling at one another, they SMILE. Remember, we have to hew to a higher standard because we are on the side of right.
LS @ 37
I think that was ad HUMinem!
Raven — “case of the ass”. Haven’t heard that in many a year. Thanks.
And yeah Toby — this recess bullshit sucks!
TRex @ 23
So can N=1.
retirin’ in five @ 40
I figgered that would get ya!
Shays has taken to espousing the virtues of stem cell research lately, presumably b/c its a solid winner with the Connecticut public. He’s got to keep his trap shut about stem cells when he’s hanging with his cell-cluster loving rethug homeboys in Congress though.
I hope the people of CT realize that nothing good will come at the federal level for stem cell research til the Republican hypocrites are overwhelmingly outnumbered. Shays and all republicans need to be replaced.

We are?? Well, then why did the “hew to a higher standard because we are on the side of the right” allow the FISA bill to go through? I’m still really ticked off…sorry..nothing personal.

;>
Besides, the phrase “crazy as a peach-orchard boar” means that the subject is DRUNK not INSANE.
Any critter that gorges on rotten (i.e. fermented) windfall fruit gets drunk, and many animals deliberately do so.
I think Jane wants us to infer that Shays has been indulging in things he shouldn’t have…
Bustednuckles @ 7
I’ve never heard it before. what does it mean?
Unless I am mistaken crazy as a peach orchard boar refers to pigs who eat partially fermented fruit and get drunk. It is not a reference to mental illness but I could be wrong.
Ah, I see that Brisingamen has beaten me to this. Great minds. . .
looseheadprop @ 49
Army talk, when someone was really pissed.
N=1 @ 11
Interesting (to me) but somewhat OT: This isn’t the first time I’ve seen “inherent worth and dignity of all persons” in the comments. That is the first of the 7 principles of the Unitarian Universalist denomination. Are you a UU? I think many progressives, regardless of their religious affiliations, would be very comfortable with most of those 7 principles.
Hugh @ 50
Sorta like Paul Butterfield’s “Drunker than granma’s ol yeller hawg”! m You know the Koreans get their pigs drunk so they can take em to market on a bicycle. And don’t anyone even think about telling me that’s OT!
Speaking of Howie Klein:
I’ll be posting this again and again (until I get caught) between now and Sept. 27, for any SoCal firepups who are able to come.
Howie Klein will be speaking to the Foothill Community Democrats club on Thursday Sept. 27 at the Peach Cafe in Monrovia from 7-9. Details to follow.
raven1 @ 53
The three little pigs went all by themselves…. and they were sober. I know, I was there.
And don’t anyone even think about telling me that’s OT!
drunken Chinese pigs on a bicycle? Never off topic, any more than drunken Republican pigs in D.C. limo’s would be.
nomolos @ 55
That just made me really sad.
What the heck has happened to Shays in the last few years. I used to actually like him and he took the right side in the Terry Schiavo case.
That being said, I’ve listened to him at a number of hearings and he has gotten positively shrill and out of control. The Shiite v. Sunni comment was pretty over the top.
I’m happy that someone not Diane Farrell is running against him. My man is Chris Murphy but will be happy to work for Mr. Himes.
LS@46: when I speak of “we” I mean us here at FDL. Yes, this is Jane and Christy’s “livingroom” and as such they are the hosts and can say what they want. And we are guests and can behave ourselves as guests should do. But, if we flog one another, all it does is break up the cohesion, which is what the GOP’ers want. Remember, they survive and thrive on our killing each other off. They grow on our eviscerating our own. We are all ticked off with what happened to FISA. I spent that week calling and emailing and going crazy and probably raised my blood pressure a good twenty points with that. And I was heartily disappointed, though not with my guys because they did the right thing. But just because the rhetoric “out there” gets nasty does not give us the privilege of using the same garbage here. N=1 is a healthcare professional; she is very sensitized to how mental health issues are portrayed. She is working very very hard in an area that is not getting nearly enough attention from us or anyone else. We need to support her. We need to support anyone who walks in the door and is evidence of what Bushco has done to thie country and to the world. That is my point. It is hard in August, when it is hot, humid, and nasty, with all of this junk being spewed out of the Bush Admin. which threatens to a) keep us in Iraq for at least a generation, b) get us into Iran, for..well ditto, c) bring in everyone within the region into the conflagration, and bring us all under totalitarian domination by the bunch of seemingly amoral fanatics. It is hard. But doing the easy stuff just has not paid off. Every day I am reminded that all I did in 2000 and 2004 to stop Bush…was to go vote. I thought it was enough and the rest would take care of itself. Well, it doesn’t and in order for us to get any purchase on this deal, we all have to work together and support one another…even when…it’s just a little bit uncomfy. My two cents.
Please send any and all complaints to eschatonmail AT comcast DOT net.
Thanks!
Yeah, well Chris Shays ain’t drunk either; he’s just a mean SOB. Who knows, he might be a nice drunk since he IS such a mean sober.
Here it is. Remember during the testimony of GSA head Laurita Doan Congressman Shays said
JGabriel says:

Shroter Shays: “Rip your clothes and scream, “I HAVE SINNED, I HAVE SINNED, I HAVE SINNED!”

On topic:
Shays is in the same predicament that Peter (”I thank God every night that George W. Bush is my president”)King is in.
Having tied himslef to Shrub’s failed war and lost real support from his constituents, the only way he stays in power is by being propped up by the WH.
This is similar to what Newt Gingrich did with GOPAC. He recruited weak candidates to run in targeted races. These were folks who could not raise money or put together campaign organizations on their own.
GOPAC funded tham and assigned them campaign staff. Thereafter, the GOPAC candiadtes had to do whatever Newt wanted b/c if he withdrew GOPAC support they could never get re-elected.
Rove saw the reliability in that.
Jane Hamsher @ 41
We all are on the same page. Has anyone noticed how stressed-out, under duress, defensive, argumentative, and fear saturated we all are? This administration is collectively destroying the mental health of all Americans. Rightful paranoia about retirement, social security, savings, jobs, health insurance, and robbing peter to pay paul with the monthly bills has put the majority of US Citizens behind the eight-ball. The BushCo assholes have ripped away the social safety nets, destroying democracy. They tell us repeatedly with their hands in our wallets, “it sucks to be you.” Have we had enough yet?
My Dad alway’s said to get drunker than a piss boiled owl.
Never quite figured that one out.
raven1 @ 63
Oh. Well that makes no sense whatsoever then. Please try to stay on topic. /s
Toby Wollin @ 59
I agree with you, and I understand exactly where you are coming from. I support N=1 and everyone on FDL and all the other souls that want this nightmare to end. You are right that infighting is counterproductive, however our representatives must pull their weight. It gets my blood pressure up there too, that’s why I’m having a beer on this hot, humid August afternoon.
Bustednuckles @ 68
A….piss….boiled….owl? Oh, the imagery. This is not good for someone with an imagination with a tendency to run wild.
It’s always a little testy here. It’s a political blog and people have different agenda’s. Sometimes I tune out because the topic doesn’t interest me. Sometimes I go OT. Sometimes people want to stay on topic and they say so. It’s a living document.

Republicans never get drunk, never use illegal substances, never over-eat, never engage in pre-marital sex, always use the missionary position, always respect the law, always respect the privacy of others, and never miss a day of church.
Well that sure changes the guest list for my next party!
FWIW
Ad hominem means this in logical argumentation, by way of example:
Party A argues, for example, that a FISA wiretap violates the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment.
By argues, I mean lays out his or her reasoning.
Party B, rather than challenging the assumptions or the logic of the reasoning, says, “Well, isn’t it interesting that such an argument is made by someone who used pot in college.”
Ad hominem means attacking the person making an argument, not the argument.
An ad hominem response, IOW, is a logical fallacy.
Jane didn’t employ an ad hominem attack against Chris Shays, because Jane was not seeking to deflect some argument of his.
Jane simply described him — accurately, in my view — as having no greater sense than an oinker in an orchard.
Glorious RAIN it Athens!

Lots of what we’re seeing in the public arena is, in fact, batshit crazy. And that’s a professional opinion.
“Batshit crazy”. Damn.
Could you put that in layman’s terms?
JOnah Goldberg over at National Review thought Libby should go free for outing an undercover agent. He also thoughtValerie and Joe Wilson were really mean to Libby
http://article.nationalreview……U3M2MyMjY=
But when it come to throwing people in jail for mistreating dogs Jonah Goldberg is all about it
“So when these men behave like devils and revel in the lowest aspects of humanity, it will not do to suddenly declare “it’s just a job.” (The NFL, though hardly in danger of succumbing to an epidemic of moral integrity, can surely see this distinction, at least as an issue of brand integrity.)”
http://article.nationalreview……A5ZGE5N2Q=
So in Jonah Goldberg’s book when you kill or hurt dogs you should do your time, but when
you out a CIA agent who is operating undercover and this outing undermines National Security you should be let off.
I don’t think I will ever understand these radicals thinking having to do with Justice.

a message from:
GIVE ‘EM HELL HARRY
Dear ….,
Even after our bloodiest summer in Iraq, George Bush still refuses to reevaluate his flawed strategy that led to one of the worst foreign policy blunders in our nation’s history. A change of course in Iraq is long overdue, and I will fight for that change in the coming weeks.
In July, several Republicans began to speak out against the President’s failed strategy. But when it came time to vote, they continued to back George Bush.
I promise you, I will not let these Republicans hide. When the Senate returns to Washington, I will force them to take vote, after vote, after vote on bringing an end to the war in Iraq. Talk is cheap — their votes are what really count. Republicans will have to decide, do they stand with the President or with the American people?
This summer, Americans Against Escalation in Iraq, a coalition of organizations working to end the war, put pressure on these Republicans utilizing hundreds of organizers and thousands of volunteers. Their efforts will culminate with town hall meetings and Stand Up Vigils across the country on August 28th.
Take A Stand Town Halls and Stand Up Vigils are part of a nation-wide organizing drive to demand that members of Congress stand with the vast majority of Americans who want a safe and responsible redeployment of American Forces from Iraq.
Sign up to attend a Take A Stand Town Hall or Stand Up Vigil in your community by visiting:

In September the White House will issue its report on the surge. They will try to use this moment to convince the American people that the escalation worked.
That’s why if you want to end the war, it is vital you participate in this event. We need to put as much pressure as possible on Republicans in Congress.
Thank you,
Harry Reid

Just wondering where the idiom “batshit crazy” came from. Is it the same as “bats in the belfry?” Does this have something to do with a malady afflicting guano miners? Or is histoplasmosis or nitrate poisoning involved? Btw, I’m just trying to wrap my brain around the fact that your career involves people on the edge. Is it a doctor sense of humor thing or a TGIF relief? I get it that laughter and humor is the best release and so is blogging amongst internet friends;)
Pachacutec @ 92
Anyone remember Alan Bates in the King of Hearts? (1966–I tried, but couldn’t find a YouTube clip for you). A WWI British footsoldier enters a small French town. Its citizens have left, and the village now is peopled by folks who escaped an asylum. The end of the film leaves one wondering just who is crazy–those who make war, or those identified as mentally ill.
We need words like crazy–batshit and otherwise–to describe aspects of our social world that don’t make sense. We need colorful words in this bleak time. And we need each other. Agreed, gentles all?
(thus spake another friggin psychologist. )

Cool, I was there when they dedicated the Duke Kahanomouka (sp) statue.
King of Hearts. Great movie!
Where does “mean” come into psychology? I can understand having a mean moment and knowing you did so you make amends and don’t repeat it. But people like Shays and Bush and Cheney are serial meanies.
QuakerGirl @ 131
Well, mean people suck.
I don’t think that explains it, though.
serial meanies = devoid of any shred of humanity
hackworth at 74 says-”Republicans never get drunk, never use illegal substances, never over-eat, never engage in pre-marital sex, always use the missionary position, always respect the law, always respect the privacy of others, and never miss a day of church.
Just ask one and he will tell you.”
yep, i was married to one……..all points correct, except for the dry drunk part, premarital sex part………and the privacy of others, and respecting the law-they are above it so don’t have to………..
and from baptist friends, oral sex isn’t sex in the baptist realm………so, that means no pre-marital sex…….un huh…….
Agreed The King of Hearts is great. Amoung many memerable scenes, a Frenchman playing a Scotish General and doing a hilarious Scotish accent.
I certainly have to say I totally agree with all of the extremely intelligent and thoughtful comments that have been posted here.
FDL is the greatest! This is the best blog ever, and we’re so lucky to have such a forum to discuss the pressing issues of the day.
I love FDL, and especially Jane and Christy!

“I have here in my pocket a list of 200 known witches currently in Congress.” — ghost of McCarthy
Heh.
I guess that explains why their inquisition investigated Bill Clinton so thoroughly. Bill kept us all spell-bound.
But, times have changed and we’re moving on to greener pastures and bluer skies.

Odds are it’s likely to get much worse for some people.
Soldiers in Iraq, homeowners who will become used-to-be-homeowners, many Republican politicians, some corporations who might suffer more ‘credit crisis blues’ and various others are going to be afflicted with Bushitis.

Deal with what? I thought she didn’t deal in hypotheticals and this isn’t even a complete hypothetical, it’s an imaginary what-if hypothetical.
