A little toe-tapping incentive from our Blue America heroes — Tommy and Ken. Huge thanks to them, to Rickie Lee Jones, to Howie, to Siun and Jacqrat for all the hard work on the 2006 campaign. Love this song…
We get updates. First from Bob Schacht and a visit to two Hawaii House members. Do read the whole piece that Bob posted, but this was of particular interest:
But Abercrombie did mention a few new (to me) elements [on impeachment]. First, he said that the Democratic leadership was looking for ways to “peel” Republicans away from the solid Republican block, but so far without much luck. The implication was that if they could figure out how to peal off a few more votes, impeachment would be back on the table.
When you consider what we are seeing with Senate races as well, as I detailed in the prior piece on McConnell and others, you can see what a sham the GOP public bluster really is: all huff and puff, and a crumbling house of sticks falls down entirely. It’s time for a whole lot more public push, don’t you think? We can’t wait for Democrats in Congress to do this — we’re going to have to push for the reforms we want ourselves.
This next bit comes from a meeting that demi and Loo Hoo had with a staffer in Rep. Issa’s office in CA. Not exactly Mr. Friendly To Progressives, and yet, demi and Loo Hoo had a meeting, aired out their views, and found out some very interesting stuff from Issa’s district deputy, who couldn’t quite figure out why two constituents were simply interested in better government. Huge thank you to demi for sending me the write up, and for Loo Hoo sending notes along as well.:
We started out with the issue of needing to reinstate Habeas Corpus. Oh, you have a problem with the Patriot Act, he asked. You probably think we don’t need Guantanamo. Those people are terrorists! Loo Hoo pointed out that we don’t know that, we haven’t tried them yet. He rolled his eyes like we were idiots. Leaning forward, he posed, “Did 9/11 not happen!?” Oh yeah, we missed that one completely. We tried to point out that if you take away Habeas Corpus for those who you suspect are terrorists, you take it away from all of us. Too bad. He didn’t see a problem with that.
Then, we naturally moved on to wire-tapping. He shared with us that he gets a lot of calls from those people who live in the trailer park in Oceanside….The inference…was that he didn’t have a problem with illegal wiretapping, but spending money on investigating those trailer trash people. He really wondered at our passion and interest in this subject. He asked Loo Hoo “You don’t really stay awake at night worrying about these things, do you?” Of course, she answered, “Yes, Phil, I actually do.” He shook his head at us. Unbelievable.
He did agree, albeit half-heartedly, that some parts of the act needed to be reviewed. He said that after 9/11, laws were changed too quickly, and like in our personal lives when that happens, mistakes can be made.
He really wanted to let us know that Darryl Issa is one of the good guys. Hey, “Darryl” has repeatedly disagreed with The President. He told us that “…we’re more civil libertarians then you people think.” He was really pressing Loo Hoo for a reason for her being there. It was our distinct impression that he might have thought she was considering running for his seat in the next election. (Hey good idea we thought! Thanks for that.)
We moved on to Iraq. (Darryl) thinks it’s a disaster in the Middle East. (Nothing gets by this guy.) He agreed that “at some point” we have to come up with an exit plan. Loo Hoo was passionate when she pushed for more. At some point? When would that be appropriate? What about a time table?
I pointed out that in the recent debates even the Republicans are saying that the war is a mess, and why is it that just now they have changed their tune. He responded that people have short attention spans and they are tired of hearing about the war in Iraq on the news.
Nothing was mentioned about the trillions of dollars we’ve spent…I asked him if he thought that Senators and Congresspeople care about what their Constituents feel about political issues. This was one of my the questions I thought would be politically neutral; one that would not set off any alarms. I was wrong. Up went his shields and again leaning towards me he questioned “Why would you think otherwise?”…
Loo Hoo brought up the issue of Blackwater wanting to build some sort of facility near San Diego and asked how Mr. Issa felt about that. Yeah, so what’s the big deal? She pointed out that we’re borrowing two billion dollars a week from China to pay for those private mercenaries. So? Again, what’s the problem? He explained to us that our country buys a great deal of goods from China. It was my impression that he feels we could not sustain ourselves without all of the crap we buy from them.
He told us that we have to buy our junk from China because America doesn’t manufacture anything anymore. (Because it’s cheaper to produce abroad — i.e. a way for the corporations to make more money!) We only produce lawyers. Every kid out there has new tennis shoes and iPods and cell phones. Neither Terry or I have cell phones we admitted, nor do we buy items manufactured in China. This was another time he pointed out just how much of an exception the two of us are. He brought up Wal-Mart. He shops there. We don’t. When he enlightened us that they have the best prices, Terry explained to him that the only reason they have the best prices is that they treat their employees like dirt. Again, the shrug. So what.
We were trying to make the point that it’s not good for our country to have these corporations getting rich on the backs of the workers. Mr. Paule asked what’s wrong with a smart man getting rich off of a successful company he has made. (Please note the gender.) And we answered that they should be paying their share of taxes, to which he pointed out that they are. I guess he’s never heard of offshore accounts.
Back to Blackwater, we said it was wrong for them to be making money on the backs of our soldiers and Mr. Paule told us that we probably wouldn’t have a problem if, say, The Peace Corps wanted to build their headquarters here. Maybe I’m just stupid, but I just don’t see the comparison. To me that is a completely ludicrous analogy. But, that’s just me.
When we switched to the subject of the Libby trial, he accused Loo Hoo of being obsessed with it and asked her why. How do you explain all of the ties to the illegal war, the undermining of the CIA, all of the destruction of the Constitution to a guy who donated to Scooter’s defense fund and thinks that the jury’s decision was clearly wrong….He corrected my assumption that Scooter didn’t “out” Valerie Plame; that was Robert Novak. When we pressed him on the issue of lying, he did the but, but, but…Bill Clinton did.
I asked him did he not see the incredible differences between the ramifications of Libby’s lies versus Bill Clinton’s lies? Naaa. He told us we shouldn’t worry about her getting a new job. She’ll be fine. Same as all those [US] Attorneys who were fired. They won’t have a problem getting new and even higher paying jobs. Don’t you worry your pretty little heads about it was the implication. How does one have a discussion about right and wrong when he only sees dollar signs….
I was pretty exhausted by the time we got to the end of the meeting. It should have made me feel better when he explained to us that we have “packed up a great deal of power in congress” since the last election. I should have been relieved when he assured us that regarding our fears and anxieties about Bush/Cheney/Rove et all, that we “have an amazing and exaggerated mindset about how much power these people have.” He told us that we give them “far more credit than necessary.” He thanked us for being good citizens and participating in our Democracy and for remaining civil during the discussion….
Oh, and I almost forgot the money quote. Phil Paule told us, and I’m not quoting him, but to my memory and from what I wrote in my notebook, that Mr. Darrell Issa is just a bored millionaire. I swear to God. You can’t make this stuff up.
Hello, sunshine. If you’ve had an encounter or a response from your contact with your elected officials, do let us know. Let’s keep the accountability going, shall we?

Didn’t think so.
Hmmm 3 of 4. Definitely need to buy that lottery ticket. :-)
So far today:

Biodun – but the yearly total is probably more like:
Biodun:64
Richmond: 3
I’d really like it if someone could convince me that HRC is a progressive.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 8
Can’t do it. She’s a neo-liberal.
epu’d … this is as bad as we expected
(doing a quick driveby … posting from work)
dunno if folks saw this or not, but it ain’t pretty … linky
Thank goodness I don’t have an ‘E’ at the end of my last name, still,I might start looking over my shoulder more often.
Bustednuckles is Phil Paul @ Facebook.
I think the word he’s looking for in the first quote is “peel,” unless they actually make a sound when they break free.
Interesting report by Loo Hoo and demi.
“Issa is just a bored millionaire.” Hmm. I’ll have to think about that one.
Biodun at 13 — I took that to be the reason that Issa decided to run for Congress. Because he needed a hobby outside of his money. Or something.
MayDaze @ 12
Yes, they make sounds when they break free: “Ouch! (Clunk!)”
Richmond @ 7:
Actually, I’ve never kept count…*g*
Who has it right? Edwards, Kucinich, Obama or HRC. Of course we know who has the largest campaign war chest. Frankly, I like the trial lawyer and Dennis. And then there’s Gore.
I just don’t know what to say about these reports. ignorance? Willful or simple negligence? The will of we, the people? What a quaint idea = it should go the way of the Geneva Conventions or the Constitution.
Vote these people out!
montag @ 9
I dislike neocons and new liberals. ;0)
montag @ 15
My mistake.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 8
I don’t think she is. I prefer Edwards, but I’m thinking she’s got it sewn up. We’ll see, I suppose. Still, she’ll be better than any other R candidate, and infinitely better than the current one…
I will support Hillary in the primaries. If Senator Clinton is the only candidate.
CHS @ 14:
A bored millionaire decides to mess with the constitution? That’s quite a hobby. Even for a millionaire.
lee5 @ 10
Even as only a rumor [which it may be] this is grim, and might be intended to subvert free voting in the next election.
Yes, Clinton will be better than any Republican. And I have lowered the bar.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 22
One of these days (probably when “America the Beautiful” replaces “The Star-Spangled Banner” as the national anthem), all ballots, in all races, will have a spot for “None of the Above.”
Biodun @ 23
Isn’t that what we’ve got *now*?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 25
You and me both.
HRC: neo-liberal.
This kind of neoliberal?
peanutbutter @ 28
neither of you lowered the bar. you just recognized the hapless reality ……
We will need to, regardless of who is elected, continue to hammer all our elected representives as we’re trying to do now. The damage done by moving the Dem party so far right will take quite a bit of correction even in a Dem controlled government that we won’t be able to relax even once that’s accomplished…
Loo Hoo for Congress!
HRC: I’m not a supporter in the primaries. She has been quite impressive in the debates, I’ll have to say. Although I won’t vote for her in the primary, I’ll reluctantly vote for her in the general if she has the nomination.
Good job demi and Loo Hoo!
Sounds like demi and LooHoo needed some decontamination after that meeting.
Never in my almost 40 years of voting straight Democratic, have I been so uninspired as I am by front runners Obama and Hillary. I hope my party has hit rock bottom.
I had a rather long conversation with a staffer in Sen. Pat Robert’s office. I think it was a slow day in DC today. But I did appreciate the tone of her listening and discussion. I told her that, while I wasn’t Republican, I am a Kansan, which means that many of my relatives are R’s and that the R’s are even losing the fundamentalist Baptist types among my relatives. Also, that Robert’s positions on the Intelligence Committee were incomprehensible and contradict the sort of representation that I wish I had had. Finally, we discussed the op-ed written by the soldiers in the Sunday NY Times (which is now required reading in all my classes).
Anyway, I was glad not to get a quick hang up. So I encourage more leisurely discussions with the staffers sitting in DC, especially if one isn’t able to get in touch with the elected official. (No one even ansered the phone in Brownback’s office.)
Hi
I took Christy’s advance and met with JM yesterday at the Tracy, Calif. B/N for 1 on 1 Q/A. On FISA he said they didn’t have the votes to stop it, so they voted and went home. On the war time table, because of what the the Gs said that’s how much time it would take to withdraw. That’s is why he said 3 months or more to get out. I did bring up the fact if we cut a deal with Sadar, he’s already been quoted that he open up a path for us to leave. JM said he was trying to work with other house members on a plan to leave but wouldn’t say what it was. He also said they would release a statement yesterday to spellout what he was saying about leaving the war, did it happen yet.
On the blog world I asked him if he was turning his back to them now that he has money and the seat, the answer was no and they did get me elected. He added they’re never happy. To that I added if they are happy and your happy then we need to quite our jobs because we aren’t doing the job any more just going through the motions.

My 1st visit & not the last
Oklahoma kiddo @ 17
Here’s why I won’t vote for Gore: The election of 2000 in which the Supreme Court unconstitutionally meddled and appointed this current idiot president was conceded by Gore without a fight after that disgraceful decision because he was afraid of causing a “constitutional crisis.” At least we still had a constitution back then and there was an immediacy and anger among Democrats that could have been tapped into that might have saved us from the 3500 deaths of Americans in Iraq and possibly a portion of the 2000 here in the US on 11 September 2001.
Mr. Gore did not have the cajones then and I don’t care how presidential and diplomatic and noble he appears to be now. He choked when it counted and this country has been paying for his failure to act ever since.
I will not support a Gore nomination.
Let’s all contact Hillary and let her know what we think. I have.
I find this hard to believe. Not that this is the implication, but that this is an honest answer by Abercrombie. Does anyone really believe that the democratic leadership is hard at work, craftily peeling republican votes away, laying plans for the stealth impeachment? That flies in the face of every weak, conciliatory retreat made by these same majority leaders.
Sorry, not buying it.
Yes, three cheers for Demi and LooHoo. And for Patrick Leahy, who was described as looking exhausted in the last thread. Folks – the Repubs are dearly hoping that we all get tired and frustrated and annoyed and … give up. That is really what they hope for. That we will just give up and go away because its..just..too..freakin…hard to keep on fighting and screaming and going crazy and whatever. We got hammered in 2000 and 2004 because we were frankly asleep at the switch and I admit my guilt in this also. We have to turn into Argos, the monster who never sleeps. Because if we do take our focus off these guys, they are ready to come back even harder than ever. We’ve gotten pretty darn close to the edge of the cliff right now as it is. And part of that is that the folks in Congress just can’t believe what a bunch of amoral excuses for humanity the GOP is. “Pealing off Republican votes”? Is Nancy kidding? These folks know at the cellular level that if they break away, they are done, dead meat out in the sun. The GOP owns them body and soul. And that is why some of them are really wriggling now – they know that in 2008, they have this albatross around their necks. So that makes them uncomfortable, but they still think they can overcome it. We on the other hand, can not give up, can not stop putting the pressure on. And that means that the tough stuff is on US – not them. Rove has been released to do his “dogs of war” gig on the Democrats. The GOP may not like him, but he is theirs, body and soul and will be out there stirring up trouble for the opposition, so they will put up with him. No one is going to give Karl away. The only way to get these guys is to keep up the fight. All day. Every day. Because what they are waiting for is for us to get tired…
jo6pac @ 38
welcome Jo!
james @ 39
Who are you supporting (if anyone) and why. ;0)
casual observer @ 41
I agree. I think the fear that an impeachment process now will hurt Dem campaigning (whether actually true or not) is one of the few honest answers we’ve gotten.
I’m struck by how the term “bored millionaire” applies to many of the Republican candidates.
Not to mention our current Preznit.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 40
Unfortunately she’s my senator and I’ve contacted her office numerous times. Always courteous staffers and nice people even when I vehemently disagree with some of her actions.
Yes, that I can get behind.
Demi and Loo Hoo are saints. Just reading the narrative and I get stomach pain.
I support Dennis Kucinich wholeheartedly and, in a pinch, Edwards. The rest of them especially the career Senators, Biden and Dodd, I wouldn’t throw a rope to if they were caught in quicksand.
Just heard this joke…..
There is the Executive Branch, Judicial Branch, Legislative Branch and the Dick Branch….. ;)
james @ 39
Try 3,707 dead Americans…been awhile since you’ve checked the fatalities list? I’ve been sending my Rep and Senators a postcard EVERY time the total increases.
james @ 49
in Texas that’s, “I wouldn’t piss on them if their guts were on fire.”
james @ 49
I like Dennis and John.
Brisingamen @ 51
I typed the “plus” key but it didn’t transfer to the comment…even 1 American death in that illegal and immoral war was too many.
“demi and Loo Hoo had a meeting, aired out their views, and found out some very interesting stuff from Issa’s district deputy, who couldn’t quite figure out why two constituents were simply interested in better government.”
gee, now …… let’s see…….
1. maybe mr. paule is incapable of envisioning better government?
2. maybe mr. paule’s mother was frightened by grover norquist?

Oh I like K. well enough, but he hasn’t got a snowball’s chance. I like Edwards (although I have to mightly ignore the whole blogger fiasco with Marcotte & Evans) but I’m increasingly pessimistic. I can’t put my finger on Obama and Clinton I’m afraid is simply more Clinton although that’s not ALL bad — he did astonishingly good things among the astonishingly bad and if she does the same, we’ll be a hella lot better off than we are now. But STILL! I want someone with FIRE! About the only consolation is the absolute anemia among the R candidates.
10 points for not giving Issa a kick up his lazy, spoiled rear end -
via Think Progress
“The committee heard testimony from four women whose family members were killed by insurgents in Fallujah in 2004, then burnt, dragged through the streets, and hung from a bridge. The women described how the contractor BlackwaterUSA has refused to give them information about the deaths of their loved ones to cover up its own errors.
Almost immediately, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) went on the offense, telling the women, “I don’t think your testimony today is particularly germane to the oversight of this committee.” He added, “One question I have is, the opening statement, who wrote it?”
The women responded to Issa’s attack, explaining that it was a “compilation of all four of us.”
Biodun @ 13
maybe that’s why he got involved in those stolen car scams with his brother.
I support Gore for President. And if push comes to shove and Hillary is my only choice, I will put a clamp on my nose and cast my vote her way. Now there’s something to look forward to. I can hardly wait. But then who knows. Perhaps President HRC will surprise me.
jo6pac at 38 — Great work — we’ll have something on McNerney coming up shortly as well.
james @ 39
He also blew it by not engaging Clinton in the election, by picking Lieberman as his VP, and by coming across as too “holier than thou.” He was right, but you have to know how to engage with “the people.” Alas, Kerry was an even worse choice.
I will vote for Hillary only “holding my nose.” Obama has problems, but I think he is heads above Hillary from the vantage of big pharma and insurance obligations, and in terms of the war.
Thanks, Christy, for the nice words about my account of the meetings with Hawaii’s representatives!
Bob in HI
Bob – your screen name is too pedestrian, it looks like you are a serious person ;)
Bob at 63 — Thanks so much for writing it up. Hey — every bit of contact makes a difference. They have gotten so used to not having to listen because people don’t bother to contact them much any more from our side of the aisle. We have to re-train them — and ourselves — to do the day to day business of having this conversation. And the more they listen, the more some of them at least get forced to think a little more…
Oklahoma kiddo @ 17
Gore is either:
1. teling the truth that he isn’t going to run, or
2. he is being coy and wants somebody to plead for him to
” throw his hat in the ring.”
neither scenario fills me with enthusiasm for him as a candidate. scenario number 2 would lead me to support another candidate.
had he entered the “race” three or four months ago i would have given him serious consideration. now is too late. september is
way too late. october and thereafter impossible. it would be farcical and a guaranteed failure.
MayDaze @ 12
Thanks for the correction. I’ll edit the blog.
Bob in HI
thank you LooHoo and demi that was so inspiring
As for Gore… here’s the thing. What he is now, is amazing. But I definitely thing that it happened to him precisely because he made all the stupid mistakes in 2000 in the way he handled his campaign and how he conceded. I think he’d be fabulous NOW…BUT I think equally he has no interest whatsoever in running. Why should he? He’s getting a shitload of stuff down now that he’s out of the political straightjacket.
Would I vote for Gore now? Sure. Hell, I voted for him then. But do I think he’s dipping into this race? Not a chance.
Gore running or not:
Word has it that he will not run. Tipper doesn’t want him to. (This from an FDLer who has friends who socialize with the Gores in DC.)
Biodun @ 29
As the wiki article suggests, neo-liberalism is not particularly well-defined. That said, I think Tony Blair is a pretty good example of the contemporary neo-liberal. A suck-up to the wealthy and the conventionally-minded financial and foreign policy elite, a somewhat indiscriminate and incompetent devotee of privatization, with a moderately felt, but indifferently expressed passive-aggressive authoritarian streak, a closeted neo-colonialist, and a determined anti-populist.
The premise from where I start is if we continue to abuse Mother Earth, what will we then have. Who has shown the courage to stand for the environment? And who do the corporations and Republicans, and for good reason, fear most?
peanutbutter @ 57
Among the astonishingly good things Clinton did:
1. The war crimes of bombing Yugoslavia with depleted uranium;
2. Eroding the Bill of Rights by pushing the Effective Anti-Terrorist and Death Penalty Act in the wake of Oklahoma City opening the door to this idiot’s forays against it;
3. Effectively ending wlefare in this country so that Wal-Mart and its ilk would have an available pool of labor for years to come;
4. Helping to increase the globalization of poverty by pushing GATT and NAFTA;
5. Ceding US sovereignty in trade issues by signing onto the WTO; and,
6. Allowing the Chinese to get MFN trading status even after they massacred their own people at Tianamen Square.
Bill Clinton was only allowed to become president so he could accomplish 2, 3, and 4, things no Republican could get away with.
If Hillary gets in it will be to finish off Social Security and Medicare for the GOP so that the Bush family dream of burying FDR’s legacy will be realized in Poppy’s lifetime.

Any D running is going to appoint far better lawyers to the Federal Bench than have been appointed in the last eight years. And that is at all levels of the Federal Judiciary.

I should note that Abercrombie did NOT explicitly apply the “peel off” argument to impeachment; it was my juxtaposition of several things he said at different times in the meeting. I thought that he was inferring the link, but I might be wrong.

Oh dear James – me thinks you are mixing up Kerry’s presidential campaign result with the honorable Al Gore. The last time I looked the Supreme Court decision shut the door on Gore ’s rigorous stand to claim his election.

As I’ve said before, this will be an identity-politics ticket and a suicidal one. Gender and race: too stacked and won’t work. America is simply not ready for this double whammy, I’m afraid.
Not to be picky, but I believe the quoted word in the post–”peal“–should be spelled PEEL, as “peal” means to make a sound–like the peal from bells.
THANKS!!
LOVE THE WORK!!!
Thanks, you are braver people than I am. Discussing anything with such a braindead Republican is just beyond me. Issa like so many Republican members of the House is a posterboy for the Age of Stupid. No thought, no fact, no logic, simply insert talkingpoints, press start button, and he will regurgitate it all, immigrants, terrorists, Martians, doesn’t matter. The worst President in our history and the Issas of this world not only can’t see it but have actively abetted the Bush Administration and its bewildering mix of hacks, goofs, psychopaths, dopes, and criminals (of which he is one) in everything they have done.
Anyway thanks again for doing something I could never do.

i’m for Edwards.
1. he’s the only candidate who could overtake Hillary and Obama.
2. he’s the candidate that the MSN punditry have focused on deriding. these people do not want him to be the candidate and there’s a reason for that.
3. i trust him more than i do Hillary and he has more maturity and experience than Obama.
if you suspect from my choice of reasons that my support isn’t total and unconditional you would be correct. i think we should be careful about what and to whom we give unconditional support. Edwards seems to have drunk less of the koolaid than H. or O.
in short: don’t get in bed with any of them. they won’t respect you in the morning.
The last I recall of Darrell Issa is that he was the man behind the recall election of Gray Davis. Darrell believed that he would become the new governor, and he CRIED when Der Gropenfeuhrer tossed his hat in the ring. My recollection of the recall was that it was California’s version of the mid-decade redistricting of Texas – simply because the republican party was unhappy with the re-election of Gray Davis and his failure to adequately address the gaming of the electricity market (ht to ENRON).
So, Darrell Issa is a bored CRYBABY millionaire and lord knows we need more of them as our elected officials.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan got a fair trial on corruption charges last year and should begin serving his 6 1/2-year prison sentence, a federal appellate panel ruled today.
Ryan could appeal further, but the decision may prove a devastating legal blow to the 73-year-old Republican, whose downfall after one term in office contributed to a total loss of Illinois GOP power that the party still hasn’t recovered from.
Millineryman @ 35
Well, we did have a glass of wine with our philly steak sandwiches and salad! One of the coolest things about the meeting was knowing that demi and I were on the same page. We’d never met before, and when she walked into the outer office, our eyes met, and we clicked!
ccmask @ 111
FITZ!!
yellowdog jim @ 84
If someone hasn’t said it earlier — there better damned well be a Dem rebuttal. Immediate. Forceful.
JF @ 102:
Of course I’ll vote for that ticket. And I’d be quite delighted to have been wrong. And surprised.
Biodun @ 101
There is a call for a general strike for September 11th. Organizers are calling for people to just stay home and don’t buy anything. Should be interesting to see if such a thing would really get legs and steal the thunder of the report…Just sayin’
Oklahoma kiddo @ 83
I would support someone who promised to get single payer health care for everyone passed as item number one. Second, s/he would push to change the Bankruptcy Reform Act that was passed by the GOP with the help of people like Biden so that average American families could get themselves out from under mountains of debt that were accumulated in many cases by using credit cards ti pay medical bills, buy food, make utilities payments, etc. I DO NOT endorse running up massive credit card debts and then reneging on them through the bankruptcy process. Next, schools should educate in ways that do more than testing…thinking their way to an answer has been denied to way too many kids.
In foreign policy, I support a strong presence in the world for the purpose of keeping the peace and mediating disputes. The large global footprint of the US military empire benefits no one but the military-industrial complex.
Speaking of the MIC, defense spending needs to be slashed dramatically. We need a military to keep us safe here, at home, in the US. Our interests do not coincide with those of Israel, or Saudi Arabia, or China. We should stop trying to overthrow governments whose leaders we don’t like (Chavez) and try to make amends in Latin America that are at least a century late in coming. It’s never too late to take a personal inventory and start mending bridges.
Finally, and maybe this should be the first thing addressed: That little bit of language anthropomorphizing corporations at the expense of the rest of us that was inserted in the 1886 Santa Clara City v So. Pacific Railroad decision by clerk J. C. Bancroft-Davis in collusion with corrupt Supreme Court justice Stephen Field should be rendered moot.
Only living breathing sentient human beings should be considered humans for the purposes of voting and donating to political causes (I’ll leave the definitions for ob/gyn procedures to others).
Someone who would support these things I would follow to hell.
fahrender @ 104
ReElect President Gore and VP Edwards 2008!
Give new meaning to poetic & frontier justice! ;~)
Helen @ 108
When does he reach the bottom of the well, in terms of it’s effect? What has to happen before people see that 9/11 is just another campaign prop to Bush?
LS @ 116
Not buying anything is one thing. One hundred million people staying home from work would even get Bush’s attention….
Helen @ 113
Ryan may indeed be a crook, but he has my admiration for his stand on capital punishment. That was a gutsy call and the right call.
These inerviews remind me of the Mark Twain quote:
Helen: I miss Fitzing!
newspaperbrat @ 96
Al Gore refused to challenge the results of the Supreme Court decision because doing so would engender a constitutional crisis.
What that Skull and Bonesman Kerry did was worse…he promised to fight until every vote was counter and then in the next breath he folded his tent and gave Ohio to his brother Bonesman Bush.
Word has it that Rove is attacking Hillary because Repugs really want to run against her. They have the playbook on her. And they’re afraid of Edwards. Just as they were afraid of him in 2004. They went after Kerry because they wanted him to be the nominee.
yellowdog jim @ 106
and Reuters.
ccmask @ 123
Me too!!! I was the happiest woman on earth doing it.
Re: Hillary, I don’t think anyone knows what her politics are. If I had to guess, maybe wishful thinking on my part, she is still the “lefty” Wellesley College grad with no makeup and thick glasses. I think she learned from Bill early on, especially after he was defeated in his second election for governor, that if you can’t win, you can’t do much. She is not my first choice but if she is elected I hope she cuts the guts out of the republican Party. Advancing the social agenda will be done by electing more progressives to Congress; with the present Congress a President Kuchinich would be an exercise in frustration.
Yay demi and Loo Hoo. Darrell Issa is the lowest of the low. He was the one that engineered the bogus ‘recall’ after Enron & Co screwed California on the faux electical ‘crisis’ and managed to shift the blame onto the hapless Gray Davis, and then maneuvering Schwarzenegger into place for the Governorship (with a large field of candidates, all he needed to ‘win’ was over 10% of the vote!)
Darrell Issa is not one of the ‘good guys’. He’s a crook. Thanks, demi and Loo Hoo, for getting in his (de facto) face.
Helen @ 108
And it falls on a Tuesday this year. But if it is presented that day, it is to be hoped that it backfires on Bush.
How?
Someone needs to point out to the media that the 9/11 terrorists came from Saudi Arabia, not Iraq — that Bush’s reasons for attacking Iraq were nothing more than a web of lies.
Biodun @ 125
Gore and Kerry both won the popular vote. The elections were both stolen.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 83
Edward’s health care plan & war on poverty themes. If Clinton pulls together a subprime package for the borrowers, that could be a big one, depending on the timing &tc. I can’t seem to think of anything from Obama that makes him stand apart — anyone else help me out here?
Brisingamen @ 130
Actually, Tweety did point that out to a Repub on Hardball last week.
Re Petraeus, I know that he is supposed to testify on 9/11 but is the “Petraeus” report written by the White House also supposed to be released the same day as his testimony?
Dems need to start acting like the Majority party that they are.
LS @ 133
A mite late for that, doncha think? (Especially after all his on-camera slobbering over the commander’s codpiece….)
Senator Loo Hoo. WoooooHooooooo
Laura Strand @ 105
I think you’re right, Laura – I had forgotten that. I do know that the Republican Powers That Be had had their eye on Schwarzenegger for big office in Cali for a long time (as they did Reagan a generation earlier) and probably gamed Issa into thinking he had a chance so he would engineer the recall.
Hugh @ 134
reuters says:
Biodun @ 29
I would contend that is EXACTLY the kind of neoliberal she is.
montag @ 136
As long as the mere mention of 9/11, by anyone other than the Repubs, is immediately attacked as venturing into conspiracy theory or a big taboo subject; nothing of any substance can get out to the public. Everyone has just let them own the subject. What a tragedy.
James @ 73: “Bill Clinton was only allowed to become president so he could accomplish 2, 3, and 4, things no Republican could get away with.”
I think he only got in because of Ross Perot. I’d also add to your list allowing the merger of Exxon and Mobil and two other large oil companies.(Amoco and Phillips?)
BTW, does the DOJ still have an anti-trust division? Would love to see a real progressive get a chance at running it if it still exists.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 93
A-yup.
I remember hearing Mark Shields on the Newshour years ago: “the Democrats couldn’t organize a 2 car funeral.”
FunnyD
Oklahoma kiddo @ 80
Please, my gentle jebus, no. Puh-leeze.
LS @ 133
Nice of him — but it will take every anchor saying this on the news, morning noon and night for a couple of weeks, to make a dent in Joe Six-pack’s mind.
jim oconnor @ 142
The Sherman Anti-Trust Act has never been repealed, but, for practical purposes, it has been completely moribund since the beginning of the Reagan administration.
Steve-AR @ 128
Hillary was a R before she was a D.
Oh yeah? Now this insults not only the collective intelligence of FDLers, but of all thinking Americans as well. Again: You gotta be kidding.
Bob Schacht @ 78
Hey, congratulations to you too!
eCAHNomics @ 147
as President, how D would she be?
eCAHNomics @ 147
Umm, I know people who knew her as a Young Republican in Illinois. My own feeling from what they’ve said is that she is pretty much where she was then–it’s the Republican party that’s gone so far rightward that it makes her seem a Democrat.
yellowdog jim @ 139
This story seems to conflate Petraeus’ testimony with the “Petraeus” report. They are not the same thing. The scheduling on the anniversary of 9/11 is, of course, deliberate. September 11 this year is a Tuesday and there is no particular rationale why it couldn’t be set for the 10th or 13th. To accept the WH version you would have to believe that none of them own a calender.
yellowdog jim @ 126
And Congress is facilitating this date. Wees gats stupida and stupida.
eCAHNomics @ 147
Correct and she was “radicalized” in college. I think the 1979 election in Arkansas was a huge political lesson for both Bill and Hillary.
montag @ 151
Bingo.
Toby Wollin @ 42
I agree 100 percent. As someone prone to political depression (otherwise, I’m a happy camper), I get into a black dispairing mood. But that’s just where they want to us to be. Thank God for Christie and Jane and the whole bunch of you for keeping our spirits high and our will to fight strong.
Loo Hoo. @ 149
Congratulations to you three!
Just a little stream of consciousness here. Who set the date of the Petraeus report? Was it the Dems? The article yellowdog jim @ 139 quotes says the Sept 11 date was chosen bases on Congressional schedules. Is it possible that the Dems chose the date so that the testimony and report would be on Sept 11, making it look like Bush is trying to take advantage of the date, yet again?
Or is that too much organization for the D’s to handle?
Elliott @ 150
I think it depends on the kind of Congress she has to deal with, and what kind of margin she has. If she beats the living crap out of Guiliani, and has some coat-tails, she may feel a little freer to move left. But I wouldn’t count on it.
Knut Wicksell @ 156
Hear, hear!
Brisingamen @ 145
But…but…Joe Six Pack and the corporate media anchors are one and the same.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 40
Contact a Neosophist to let her know what you think?
Lotsa luck.
Hugh @ 152:
Isn’t his testimony the oral summary presentation of a “report” he didn’t write?
Hugh @ 99
Ah, it was fun. Demi and I would occasionally look at each other when he said something particularly stupid and try not to laugh. We succeeded, but it was a really fun time at the restaurant afterwards! He notified us that the district had been gerrymandered such that no democrat would ever win.
Hugh @ 99
I have the same problem. My congresscritter is Tom Cole, who is also the NRCC chairman this cycle. You can imagine how that would go. I still feel guilty when I read these threads, but console myself now with the possibility of defeating Inhofe. Go Rice!
montag @ 120
Sure would be nice to see the Democrats in Congress going along with it…that would take the wind out of Petraeus’s report a bit.
cleter @ 144
Now, now, it won’t be so bad. They’ll put responsible people like O’Hanlon and Pollack in positions at State. See, not so bad. Oh wait.
Loo Hoo. @ 163
That seems a little too honest.
Al Gore will announce after he wins the noble peace prize in Oct. He has nothing to gain by announcing now. If he truly wasn’t running he would say so, instead he bobs and weaves but doesn’t deny. You have to be seriously naive to think that someone that can basiclly win just by entering won’t run. spare me.
On Hillary. Not my favorite candidate. That’s Edwards and Gore. But she’s probably about the best we can do. Reminds a lot of the situation we had back in 1960 with Adlai Stevenson and Kennedy. Kennedy was basically occupying the same space then as Hillary does now, except that he had the burden of being Catholic. Humphrey and Stevenson had the left and were far more experienced. Kennedy won by a whisker — probably actually lost the ‘60 election, which is one of the things that sent the Rethugs onto the tangent taking them where they are today. Anyway, he was a strong personality, but in a weak political position. The left didn’t trust him, and the right wanted their presidency back. But he was open to fact and reason. That’s about the best you can expect. Plus he was a good public speaker.
montag @ 109
What??? Del Mar is not in the 49th. Although the people who live there are sometimes affectionately referred to as Del Martians!

Biodun @ 70
Agreed. Although I’d love to see Gore run again, The Repubs would have a field day saying, “Look at those crazy Democratics, picking a loser to lead the party back to the Oval Office.”
The MSM would also eat that shit up.
No matter how great Gore is now, he’d suffer swift-boat humiliation again.
Me, I’m sticking with Edwards. There is something positively Kennedyesque about him. And that Elizabeth…she’d make a great First Lady.
QuakerGirl @ 161
from our previous thread:
see jo6pac at #38.
he seems a nice guy to me.
montag @ 146
Ronnie never got over being mediocre and third rate at every thing he did so he took it out on working class people, children, elderly, working mothers, union workers and you name it. He just wanted to be elite so much that he would destroy America to be “Elite” and loved by the elite. Oh, Nancy. Oh Ronnie. What terrible harm you have done around the world.
hayduke @ 168
I like the Al Gore of today, but I’m not thrilled with the “Lieberman’s the VP for me!!” Al Gore of 2000.
LS @ 135
hear, hear!
that way they might even keep that majority …
Knut Wicksell @ 169
That exactly what the `pugs want you to believe (along with the myth that Nixon was the gracious loser and didn’t contest Illinois, where, in fact, he had a team of people up there in hours, quietly challenging the voter for ten days straight).
In 1960, as now, the `pugs can’t win dogcatcher without cheating–and, particularly–suppressing minority votes.
QuakerGirl @ 174
I like to think of him as the Great Enabler… :-/
Biodun @ 163
He wasn’t capable of writing it so Bush and Cheney stepped in to author the report. Now it’s accurate.
Loo Hoo. @ 163
What a twit — doesn’t he know the rule: Never say “never?” Hmm, wonder if this has anything to do with Karl Rove’s math?
(Or as the Arabs put it, “Never name the well from which you will not drink.”)
mc @ 172
Isn’t that how we got Nixon?
Steve-AR @ 128
Not quite. Per Commander Hillary:
cleter @ 175
Another one who changed as radically as Gore did. I’d like to *think* that Gore would have been a moderating influence on Lieberman, but I do shudder to think of today’s Pack-o-Lies a heart beat away from the presidency, etc, etc…
Knut @ 169: A president “open to fact and reason.” It now seems like a breathtaking dream. I may just faint.
Loo Hoo. @ 170
Umm, I guess my drift, uh, drifted. I was thinking more about ways to help Issa make an even bigger idiot of himself than he already is. :)
As far as reasons TO support someone. I have to say my favorite candidate is Dennis Kucinich because he’s on the correct side of most issues.
My favorite candidate with a chance is John Edwards. Maybe he has me suckered, but I believe what he’s saying now is what he really believes. When he ran in ‘04 I felt he was playing the consultant game too much and it showed.
I could vote for any of the current candidates except for Hillary because I really believe she is an economic neo-liberal. The only way she’ll move left even one iota is if the Dems have an overwhelming majority in both houses. I think her natural inclination is to move right.
Obama gives me some serious concerns, but my sense is that he’s probably more progressive than he makes out, but in his immaturity he’s listening a little too much to the DLC-type consultants.
That’s my 2 cents on the top candidates. I agree that Republicans probably fear Edwards the most.
QuakerGirl @ 174
President Ronald Reagan, May 17, 1986
from his recently released diaries.
Biodun @ 162
I’m not sure. The report would have to be written for him to summarize it and testify on it. If the report has been written beforehand then it should be given to Congress in advance.
Even so, this would still mean that the Petraeus report is not Petraeus’ report.
yellowdog jim @ 174
Does the number make the difference in the name? Jo6Pac is a rose and a rose by any other name is still a rose. I like Jo6Pac too. Sounds like my kinda guy/gal.
mc @ 172
First of all, I don’t give a sh*t what the Repubs say. They are fighting for their political lives, they should be worried if they are going to end up in jail for corruption down the line.
Secondly, Gore was not the loser. Gore won the popular vote. He was the winner of the election. Bush was appointed President by SCOTUS.
The Repubs cannot win this election, unless they resort to criminal actions. They have no candidate that could cross over and pick up Dem votes.
We have to frame them as what they are, the party of corruption, and the Dems as the party of the Majority. 11/06 did matter.
New Thread.

Don’t forget that the TradMed was reporting back in June that Petraeus was already “outlining” most of what the report would say then.
dakine01 @ 193
That what makes all this song and dance so much kabuki. The content of the report has been known since the supplemental was passed in late May.

just slightly to the right of Nixon …
Just skimming by as usual lately, but that talk w/ Issa’s staffer made my blood boil.
I doubt that I could have been civil with such responses. Congrats to LooHoo and demi for pulling it off.
But, it does give me some ideas about dropping by Lamar Smith’s, or even Cornyn’s offices….hmmm. Must we really stay civil?????
james @ 39
I could not agree more. I will not vote for Gore. I will not vote for Hillary. If the Dems don’t put up Edwards, I will have to hope that he runs as an Indy.
QuakerGirl @ 195
I think this one has already been proven to be a hoax.
Biodun @ 33
Bleh. All window dressing. Her words are hollow and tuned by consultants to ring the right bells. Totally devoid of affect. Totally devoid of human-ness. Totally devoid of any love or loyalty to the Constitution. She is one of the majority of Congresscreatures that see the oath to uphold and defend the Constitution as a mere hazing ritual one must get through to get the big stuff.
Rights are a luxury for the little people, to be magnanimously given when it wont hurt the pocketbook or pundit-written legacy.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 80
Too pessimistic for my tuesday — I’m visualizing the headline:
Edwards Sweeps Iowa
after that, we’ll see…
Loo Hoo & demi:
You both rock! Thanks for the story and it’s quite stunning: these critters really seem to need an education “by the people for the people” huh.
Ive got a 500 dollar donation to the dem that runs against this cowardly piece of shit.sincerly James harris
the song and video are great, but didn;t Hastert already throw himself out?
could we get other campaigns around the country to use this song, just inserting the name of whatever local Repug candidate we are running against?
At the risk of “teaching your grandmother to suck eggs” may I suggest:
1. have an agenda of talking points and stick to it
2. carry a display book with multiple copies of
3. fact sheets to support each point
Then, when you get the “So what? “hit em in black&white!
Like (off the top of my head) SAIC got a no-bid contract to design a supercomputer for NSA, $280 million. At the end of their contract term, they had nothing. No penalty, indeed, they received a government subsidy. At that point in time had something like 900 government contracts outstanding.
Shortly thereafter, they got another no-bid contract for essentially the same project at around $340 million. (No idea of the outcome … )
As I say to my daughter-in-law in ummm, conflict with my son about household budget and so on … “Talk is cheap” and easy to forget in the heat of ‘discussion’. But when you print out the monthly household expenses and plonk it on the fridge, not so easy to forget.
Of course, there’s also the psychophysiological aspect: women are multi-tasking and the communication skills ARE different.
The linguist Suzette Haden Elgin’s 1980 classic, “The Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defence” is also recommended reading.
