(Fig. 1-A: The Very Serious Foreign Policy Community responds to criticism.)
Digby and Greg Sargent have been wondering aloud if the dirty Em Ess Em were going to hoist last Sunday’s Op Ed by real soldiers returning from Iraq on to their shoulders and parade it around town in the same way that they greeted that meretricious Think Tank Puff Piece by O’Hanlon and Pollack. The answer?
Of course not. The soldiers who wrote it are just enlisted men. They didn’t go to Cornell or even Columbia. They’re not members of the Serious Foreign Policy Elite. They’re probably not even from Good Families. What the hell do they know?
Those mealy-mouthed army punks can spend as much time as they want on the ground in Iraq, but that will never get them the kind of sterling foreign policy credentials that you get from sitting in an extravagantly air-conditioned DC office, diversifying your trust holdings, and sliming your political and ideological opponents. How could a bunch of low-ranking soldiers possibly know more about the Iraq War than a Serious Thinker like Mike O’Hanlon? It is to laugh.
The piece strongly contradicted last month’s optimistic analysis of the war by Brookings scholars Michael O’Hanlon and Kenneth M. Pollack. Admittedly, their eight-day guided tour was handled by the Pentagon. But their years of study of the Middle East surely meant they wouldn’t be taken in by a Department of Defense dog-and-pony show, right? And could yesterday’s op-ed possibly come from a source more reputable than the Brookings Institution? What are the authors’ credentials, exactly?
Buddhika Jayamaha is an Army specialist. Wesley D. Smith is a sergeant. Jeremy Roebuck is a sergeant. Omar Mora is a sergeant. Edward Sandmeier is a sergeant. Yance T. Gray is a staff sergeant. Jeremy A. Murphy is a staff sergeant.
This op-ed was written by seven American soldiers who are serving in Iraq right now. They describe themselves as “responsible infantrymen and noncommissioned officers with the 82nd Airborne Division soon heading back home.” Sadly, one of the authors, Staff Sergeant Murphy, a Ranger and reconnaissance team leader, was shot in the head before the piece was published. (He is being flown to the U.S. and is expected to survive.)
But see, all the Grownups in the Media are too busy just now fawning all over the latest batch of war dilettantes who have returned from yet another DoD Dog and Pony Tour to announce that, why, actually, things are going GREAT in Iraq. Just as long as you cover yourself from toenails to temples in Kevlar and travel with a military escort the size of a small city.
Bottom line: No scholarly articles can replace real boots-on-the-ground knowledge. Participating in a heavily secured, carefully orchestrated sight-seeing visit to Iraq does not make you a military expert any more than a trip to Yankee stadium qualifies one to be a baseball broadcaster for ESPN. That should be obvious by now.
But the media continually treats troops as wallpaper footage to run in the background while the latest talking-head pseudo-expert pontificates. And the White House hasn’t learned the lesson, either, judging by the so-called “Petraeus report” coming out in September. The White House announced last week that this report won’t actually be written by Gen. Petraeus. Once again experienced military leaders will be overruled by air-conditioned bureaucrats and Beltway experts.
So let’s call the Petraeus Report what it is: Yet Another White House Plan. Of course, those don’t have a great track record, especially when it comes to assessing the situation on the ground. In the meantime, as more Americans and Iraqi civilians die waiting for someone in power to listen to the troops on the ground, someone should call the Brookings Institution – I can think of seven sharp 82nd Airborne soldiers who are getting back from Iraq soon, and they could use some comfy think tank fellowships.
Oh, right. That’ll happen. You can only get those jobs if you graduated with the Right People, Mr. Reickhoff.
What the hell do you think this country is, a democracy?

Hiya TRex!
The Fox Republican officials and politicians (frops) in the White House and Justice Department don’t want to come clean on those emails. Wonder why? If there’s nothing there why do they care so much? Why won’t the frops even disclose what they know about where they went? Nothing to look at here. We did nothing wrong, say the frops. Just mind your business. Yawn. Yawnie yawn yawn. Hey, I’ve got an idea, let’s attack Iran and forget about all this yawnie boring stuff!?

Evening, gang!
Did someone let the kids downstairs know?
The MSM is just pathetic. Utterly, utterly pathetic…
Hi TRex … Hi everyone!
Whoa!!!
I’ll go tell the others!
Hey, TRex!
What kind of fuckery is this?!?!
I used to love it when some officer would tell us how to do a search and rescue when said officer had never DONE an actual search and rescue…
Cool post!

I did.

no, james, i replied and Ygm on fb :)
It is to laugh!
thats a good one. more of that!
Have you heard the one about Bush proclaiming himself a dissident?
It is to laugh!
That editorial was one of the best things I have read on the current situation on Iraq. Because of the quality and truth of the piece, the attacks are and going to be vicious. Dan Abrams was doing some crap about should the soldiers be punished for violating Army regs. For the boss at MSNBC and seeing what KO is doing as far as ratings go, he is rather stupid. I hope KO’s Sunday Countdown is a ratings smash hit.
OldCoastie @ 14
Oh, you got that, too? Our favorite thing was then to run said officers into the ground while we followed the dogs. Heh. Too many donuts.
sporkovat @ 21
Boosh can’t even spell dissident.
It doesn’t matter. President Shit-for-Brains only ever makes one speech anyway.

Two questions.
First, who the fuck said that?
Second, have they since received some much-needed psychiatric treatment?

The Petraeus Parrot? (Will only parrot the WH line…)
Yesterday was a traumatic day for me.
Took Man-Cub back-to-school shopping.
For the first time, most of his clothes were purchased in the men’s department.
Little rat is growing up on me. Since when is that allowed?
Evening everyone!
I for one am not surprised at all that this very well-written and powerful op-ed has not made the impact that it should. The MSM has quite a bit invested in the BS that they helped spin out over the last few years. Comments that I have seen at varoius sites regarding this piece show that there is already some swift-boating out there. I think that there’s a bit of a wait and see, if the op-ed starts to gain traction the think-tankers and other single digit IQ mouth-breathers will start the slander in earnest. Sadly, it has come to where actual soldiers who are dealing with this disaster up close and personal are somehow not qualified to give their assesments. Meanwhile the chickenhawks pontificate onward.
peanutbutter @ 31
Ding!
The part about this i like is the line that none of these soldiers went to Cornell or Columbia.
When I was in Vietnam there was a guy in my company who had gone to Princeton and was not an officer.
There was a draft back then and all kinds of people went to war…well, all the right sorts of people anyway, no matter what their race or religious preference, except for chickenhawks.
Of course I mean no disrespect to the COs and others who had legitimate convictions other than ‘Oh my God! I’m too f*ckin’ scared to go over there.” I can be a patriot right here, reading, studying, and planning my future. F*ckin’ hippies. How dare they protest and throw their medals over the fence? Who do they think they are?”
A draft would end this war and I’ve got an 11 1/2 year old son and 14 year old daughter who, BTW, will be living with their father somewhere else if they get called, but that’s another matter. My kids don’t need my dreams and neither do anyone else’s.

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department said Tuesday that records about missing White House e-mails are not subject to public disclosure, the latest effort by the Bush administration to expand the boundaries of government secrecy.
Administration lawyers detailed the legal position in a lawsuit trying to force the White House Office of Administration to reveal what it knows about the disappearance of White House e-mails.
The Office of Administration provides administrative services, including information technology support, to the Executive Office of the President.
The office has prepared estimates that there are at least 5 million missing White House e-mails from March 2003 to October 2005, according to the lawsuit filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a private advocacy group.

I was working on a patrol boat in New England… they used to send up the newly made LTJGs to us (senior enlisted) to teach ‘em the ropes… as system that worked fine if the officer had any sense and modicum of humility… but we got this one joker who believed himself to be dog’s gift to sailors… he broke out a textbook to look up search patterns… it would’ve been funny if it hadn’t been March with a water temp of about 38 degrees and 9 people in the water…

Hmmm…Davy “Crockett” Petraeus and “How Great Things Look Here At The Alamo”?
I still call it the BetrayUs Report – written by the White House and spoken by the man who is betraying our military by speaking the words.
But Trex, being the War President is hard work, you know, very hard work, and he makes hard work choices everyday. And those Brookings guys, why they went to Iraq and into GREEN ZONE which is like the Twilight Zone only hotter. And those soldiers are probably only graduates of boot camp and they might be minorities, well at least some of them.
SnarKassandra @ 40
I’m a bit surprised that the Pentagon let it through. Don’t they have to clear things like this?

but “News from the Alamo” should work well with that clientele …
burnspbesq @ 51
That’s still hilarious after all these years!
BTW, have there been any updates on Staff Sergeant Murphy’s status? “Expected to survive” is a positive step, but “shot in the head” doesn’t sound good.
TRex! It gets worse. I just read on Kos, that Petraeus is going to give his “assessment” report to the Senate Armed Forces Committee on….are you sitting down?
September 11th.
Now; Carl Levin is the chairman of that committee, and he can set that agenda, just like the repubs have been setting it for years.
So. As was asked on Kos: Why in the plu-perfect fuck would he walk into this propaganda trap? He had to know that bush is going to hire biplanes to fly over the capitol trailing
“9-11!!! WarronTerrr!!!”
banners behind them, as the general speaks.
And Levin has joined Hillary in parroting the bush line of obscene bullshit, that the reason we’re not having a real “mission accomplished” moment yet, is because Maliki and his government are sectarian ingrates who don’t appreciate all that george bush and the warbots have done for their country.
This is like watching your home team shamelessly shave points in the NBA playoffs.

Evening all. I see TRex is picking the low hanging fruit tonight. The MSM has had their heads so far up where the sun don’t shine that they brush their teeth and wipe their asses at the same time.
DrDick @ 60
Ewwwww.
Kinda EPU’d: My mind stirred together phoenixwoman’s remark about only buying cd’s directly from musicians, the comments from various vets about Vietnam and the post on Manly Men; this friend popped immediately into my consciousness.
Jerry is a Vietnam Vet, and a musician. Said he was on one of the first groups of troops over there (don’t remember how long, think he was in Marines for 12 yrs., but don’t think all of it was in Vietnam). Said he left just when things were getting really bad. He saw enough bad stuff that he helped found a Vietnam Vets Against the War group in Minnesota when he came home.
He doesn’t buy into any of the crap that anybody tries to sell to the American public. He has the fiercest integrity of anyone i know. Yet he is the gentlest and most thoughtful person i know (in the sense that he thinks about everything, every action, every consequence).
This tough Marine became a folk-singer, mentoring and inspiring many singer-songwriters not just locally but nationally.
So, its a shout-out to my buddy Jerry. (if its a myspace page, is it blog pimping/madaming?)
The soldier was shot in the head AFTER writing the op-ed – so there had to be some delay between the writing and the publishings – it wasn’t mentioned in the op-ed when it was written nor when he was shot.
Suzanne @ 37

Suzanne at 17,
While doing some research last year on magnesium deficiency because my husband for reasons we still don’t know, was so low on magnesium he ended up in the hospital for a day or two, I stumbled onto an article about the relationship between low magnesium levels and migrains headaches. One of my dearest friends had been suffering terribly with migraine headaches for over a year at that time and her doctors had tried everything with no results except for the side effects of the medications. I suggested she try a couple of magnesium supplements a day to see if they had any effect. The effect was dramatic. She has gone from having two or more migraine headaches a week to less than one per month. She admits that she frequently will get those migraines when she forgets to take her magnesium. Her doctor is thrilled, and is now telling her other patients to take magnesium. Many of them notice an immediate improvement. I don’t know if your headache is a migraine, but if it is, you might try taking some magnesium.
ooopps, preview would be an even better friend if i read slowly and carefully :~(
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 62

When my oldest started 1st grade this year I told him it was just the other day I brought him home from the hospital. He looked at me as though I was the village idiot and informed me he was 6 1/2. Baby Girl was part of that study – it was a double blind placebo (she ended up getting magnesium) called the CHIMPP (CHild Infant Migraine Prevention Program) and magnesium reduced both the severity and the duration of her migraines.
Mine started as a sinusy thing and since I can not take anything with the active ingredient for sudafed in it, I had to work on it in other ways. I do take magnesium – which is why it did not get so bad.
It is sick, but they want everyone to not believe in CTs. Some of the documented actions by the Bush cabal were described as “CTs” by my brother.

Col Jack Jacobs on MSNBC said the op-ed wasn’t as strong as what generals have already been saying.
And he said he taught Petraeus and he expects an accurate report of the military situation in Iraq.
Which tells me why the WH is busily “writing” it. Because Petraeus would be honest. A concept BushCo would never accept.

Just finished writing a 25-minute orchestral piece in 3 movements, and all the players’ parts. I’m on my fourth ink cartridge. I’d celebrate, but I’ve fallen so far behind on other stuff, I can’t. Maybe I could turn on the TV news, where they’d be saying that the surge is finally starting to work, or the radio to NPR, where they’d be saying the surge is finally starting to work, or go to the Washington Post website, where they’d be saying the surge is finally starting to work. Thinking about it is getting me to miss slaving away on the music.

I’m 39, and I think you missed the dripping sarcasm tags.
And of course while we keep messing things up in Iraq, we have totally taken our eye off the ball in Afghanistan. Last week 3 Germans policemen were killed when their convoy was blown up. They provided security for the German Embassy there. That one hit a bit close to home for us. Two years ago my son-in-law was stationed at the German Embassy. The vehicles that got blown up were ones he used to drive around in when he lived there. I’m so glad he is safe, but my heart bleeds for the families of those 3 men that were killed. The MSM here never mentions Afghanistan any more, but there is every indication that the violence there is growing. We are losing ground everywhere.

The problems centered around underage drinking, and no security enforcement at all. Even after the initial port-o-potty destruction, security didn’t bother to check on it. So the anarchists’ numbers grew knowing they could get away with more. By the time there were 100 people walking together holdings sticks (they ripped down the fence posts and carried them as weapons) there was no way security would try to stop them. Cops got called in, some of the crowd dispersed, some threw bottles and other things, and some got arrested.
Mike Kelly, a fairly conservative GOP state representative from Fairbanks, called for the entire top tier od GOP thugs to resign in a letter to the editor of the Fairbanks paper.
He was on an Anchorage right-wing talk show this afternoon while I was driving my son’s car to the shop, and none of the right-wing blowhard ranters that called in disagreed. They’re paranoid that if these guys stick around too long through the winter and somehow aren’t indicted before November, those dreaded creatures known as liberals will take their places in the houses of government. Heaven forbid!
Doing much better, thanks Madmommy.
Down to the regular meds now and off the darvocet. Managed to see two of my tutoring kids and do lots of computer work for all my assorted jobs. Even had a short nap while the snarky one wrote many blog posts.
Nephew returns with his guard unit tomorrow or Thursday and TexTeen returns from his banishment tomorrow.
Heading home, gang, but I have to stop at the grocery store first.
Anybody need anything?
Guinness, Trex. Lots of Guinness
An organized Democratic party with real opposition to the Iraq war would put the NYT 7 up in front of Congress to testify on every military bill, make them heroes in every testimony, and beat the shit out of Rep who tries to slime them.

The BoSox won earlier too!!!
TexB — I am only clued into bits and pieces of your hectic life, but it certainly seems challenging. I’m hoping everything is going in the right direction for you.
A better pillow, TRex, if they have them at the grocery (hypermart, maybe?).
My neck is killing me from using all manner of nasty pillows since I left for vacation back on 26-JUL. I may have to call the chiropractor tomorrow.
Think I’m going to dose up on ibuprofen and head for bed and hope that whatever is kinked in neck works out soon. Niters, pups.

Even better news. Though AL is not truly baseball, all that DH baloney, any team that causes the Yankees misery is OK in my book.

dang it, I’ll never be able to watch Ghostbusters again without thinking of that.
Mitch, I live a very full and busy life, and am grateful for all of it.
darkblack @ 165
Licorice Pizza was the name of the phonograph record store in my neighborhood in Manhattan, back in the day. True.
Bonus joke: Man came up to me and said, “Want to buy some pornography?” I said, “Hell, I don’t even have a pornograph.”

Because I couldn’t comment at work today — my thanks to demi and Loo Hoo for their very brave and LONG visit to icky Issa (god is his name really Darrell or do I have the wrong name?). Thanks so much!
Chris
Chrstine, I do believe his name IS Darrell the bored millionaire Issa.
Spiritcatcher @ 28
I did see Chimp on TV tonight talking about Iraq (shown on Hardball.) He said, “I don’t want to pre-judge what’s in the report from David Patreaus.” LIke I am supposed to believe that his chief general in Iraq has been told, “Don’t say a word to you-know-who! It’s supposed to be a suprise!
The Mariners beat the Twins tonight 7-2…
Not to be outdone, the Nats beat up on the Astros, 11-6
BigMitch @ 179
Pretty funny, since it has already been reported that the WH is writing the report, not Petreaus.
bobschacht @ 172
Saturday morning I’ll be asking Mazie where she stands on Impeachment, any other questions you want answered Bob???
Suzanne @ 177
Suzanne,
I’ve bored my family silly for 20 years trying not to buy things from China — why is this not so obvious to Republicans? Oh, I know, just the ones who are not millionaires, right?
BigMitch @ 179
Yet another round in “the report is written by Gen. Petraeus” big lie.
Glad you are hanging in there, Betsy.

Does Cassie know anything about Lenny Bruce?
burnspbesq @ 187
Unlikely. She’s a 21st century kind of a girl.
Suzanne @ 175
It was great to see those reports front-paged today. I read them too quickly at lunchtime. I hope there are more ‘pup reports from the Working For Us Tour.
LoudounLib @ 181
Mets got two in the ninth off Trevor Hoffman to win, 7-6.
TexBetsy @ 188
Uh-oh. I’m contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Christine Edmonson @ 181
Reading the report, it looks like his spokesman (who met with demi and loohoo) admitted he shopped at walmart and bought stuff from china and thought everyone should. probably is how they claim they became millionaires – from all the money they saved.
I say bullshit.
Redshift @ 185
The whole meme of “I trust the Generals on the ground” is deeply disturbing on a lot of levels. (1) It seem unAmerican in light of our tradition of a civilian led military. (2) Anyone smart enough to become a general — shit, anyone smart enough to tie his own shoelaces — knows that if they give President Shit-for-Brains bad news, he cans their ass. (3) Military know only two things: Kill people and blow up buildings. To a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
burnspbesq @ 190
Eh, even baseball gods have an off night ;-)
hey Betsy — I actually won’t be here on Thursday…….since Dean mercifully missed Cozumel, I get to have my vacation after all…..but thanks so much for remembering, and for virtually baking!

btw: I tried to post this comment b4…..and I got a spinning wheel which finally morphed into an ominous message I have never seen before:
THE THREAD YOU ARE TRYING TO COMMENT ON DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS DATABASE.
Eeeeek.
burnspbesq @ 190
Aren’t the Mets running away with their division?
waves at good neighbor oddmommy — glad that you’ll get your vacation, and happy early birthday!
Suzanne @ 178
I still laugh at LooHoo’s YKos story — someone was blocking Eric Massa’s nameplate before a panel and she saw –SSA and thought, “what’s my Congressman doing HERE?” Still makes me laugh — Darrell Car-Alarm Recall Issa at YearlyKos!
Suzanne @ 191
Oh yeah,

Five up with 38 to play. Not exactly a runaway. The next two weeks are critical. Three with San Diego, three with the Loathsome Stinkin’ Dodgers, then four at Philly and three at Altanta. If they can go 9-4 over that stretch, then maybe we can start talking about a magic number.
oddmommy @ 203
Would love to have a get-together with you two moms. I’m around until 9/29, but then after I get back I’ll still be on leave until like 10/23. Plenty of time :-)
Suzanne @ 117
Times seven!
burnspbesq @ 205
5 up with 38 to play? If I were Boston I wouldn’t feel comfortable with that kind of a lead.
I grew up as a NY Yankees fan. Lasted until the baseball strike of 1994 when I gave up on the major leagues altogether.
burnspbesq @ 205
I haven’t had time to keep up to date with the standings like I usually do. My weekly Sports Illustrated has to suffice. I’m the only gal I know who has had a subscription to SI. That’s what happens when you grow up in a house full of boys, I guess.
TexBetsy @ 202
wow…..thanks! It is…….perfect. : ) : )
Well, I need to clock out here. I have a “faculty retreat” (can you say, “All day faculty meeting?”) starting at 9am tomorrow in a remote location it takes 45 minutes to get to (so you can’t escape I suppose). God knows what we will do for the whole day (besides kill each other). It will be made even more delightful by the fact that we are even closer to a couple of the major forest fires and all the smoke. You can tell I am thrilled about the prospect. Take care and enjoy the snark.
BigMitch @ 208
True, it’s about to be Six…!!! ;-)
g’night DrD, I hope the retreat isn’t too intolerable!
Still 13-5 Angels.
If I wasn’t a life-long, diehard Mets fan, I’d love me some Anaheim Angels. They play National League baseball in the American League, the stadium is nice, and I don’t even have to get on the freeway to get there.
BigMitch @ 193
It is deeply un-American. The worst thing is, since it’s all BS, it’s both using “the generals” as a prop for the much less trusted Bush, and planting the insidious idea that generals should be the ones who direct war policy, and not just its implementation.
madmommy @ 210
A woman who subscribes to SI? Be still, my heart!
burnspbesq @ 215
And they have the Rally Monkey. Or, do they still?

Just be happy you aren’t in business. Being OLD, I have been to more of those retreats than I care to mention. They are all worthless, to me.
Also called “Team Building.”
And people wonder why American business is lame today?
burnspbesq @ 215
The Angels were a lot of fun to watch in the World Series. But the new name is a bit of a mouthfull. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim????
burnspbesq @ 217
I’m aghast, I didn’t think any would be here at the Lake…!!! *g*
burnspbesq @ 217
Yep, almost 20 years now. Hubby could care less about sports unless it is the Super Bowl, so I get to teach the boys how to throw a ball and yell “Roll, Tide”
LoudounLib @ 218
It’s the unofficial mascot, ma’am!!!
LoudounLib @ 218
I think so; I haven’t been to a game yet this season. Hmmm, maybe Thursday night, since I’m on vacation this week.
Margot has drawn a Petraeus Parrot on her facebook graffiti wall.
Redshift @ 216
my dad was a career air force officer and he preached to us the value of civilian government, as opposed to military government.
he would have been enraged.
the boss HAS to be a civilian.
(as frightening as that would be in this case.)
burnspbesq @ 227
Go for it. I wasn’t able to attend the Nats/Mets last weekend, so go to a game and I’ll be living vicariously.
hmm… seems the Yankees are being humiliated… it is now 18-5, Angels…
Garrett Anderson is having a Very Good Night (10 RBIs so far)… and it is the bottom of the 6th…
Suzanne @ 228
That is fantastic!
madmommy @ 223
Blasphemer!!!
The Anaheim Angels, now and forever.
OldCoastie @ 231
Sweet. So sad there is no little league “10 run rule” HAHAHAHA!
burnspbesq @ 233
I remember when they were simply the California Angels, back in the day.
LoudounLib @ 229
Margot is very talented – I’ve been enjoying all the stuff she has been drawing on her graffiti wall.

Anybody seen TRex?
Is he pouting because we turned his perfectly good thread into the Late Night Sports Bar?
Or perhaps he ran into Pickup Truck Guy at the store …
CTuttle @ 236
this is getting almost ridiculous…
burnspbesq @ 154
Yeah. I personally want to convince Alison Stewart that I’m just prematurely gray, and the birth date on my driver’s license is a misprint.
Bob in HI
burnspbesq @ 233
Hey, I wasn’t the one who came up with that :0)
burnspbesq @ 236
He’s not back yet to complain about it – grocery shopping is hard work and he had so many things to pick up. I wonder what aisle he finds world peace in?
burnspbesq @ 239
Well he did have lots of requests from folks here to pick up various munchies…
oh, burns, pickup truck guy turned out to be the main dope dealer in town.
Suzanne @ 242
Canned vegetables, or maybe frozen peas?
Suzanne @ 174
Thanks! All due to your tip to me the other night to send the info to CHS! I appreciate that. I normally don’t promote my stuff very well. Got me thinking about what I might do to promote Priming the Pump.

Oh burns, I hope you’re still here — I keep meaning to tell you to check out XM 76, Fine Tunings. Totally eclectic, and even off the wall sometimes. It reminds me of the late, great WHFS as it was in its earliest incarnation, when you would literally hear anything and everything.
g’night madmommy, sleep well.
Suzanne @ 245
Oops. Never mind.
(waving to all the leaving sleepy pups who have to go to that 4 letter word that begins with w in the am)
Why are y’all asking TRex for snacks? I’ve got plenty.
Night madmom
bobschacht @ 241
Bob, Alison Stewart is 41. Go for it.
bob in hi, headache is better – just the lingering afteraffects now…. should be ready to dive in tomorrow night (fingers and toes crossed)
LoudounLib @ 250
HFS? NOW you’ve got my attention. I’ll give it a couple of hours tomorrow, while I’m writing my column for the practice group’s quarterly newsletter.
Which reminds me: I should be listening to the new releases that I downloaded earlier today.
New Pornographers
Rilo Kiley
Bruce Hornsby (a real jazz album, with Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette)
i’m a thinking about opening up a

i’ll be right back …

Okay.

You’re Up!
burnspbesq @ 257
Good, I’ll be interested to hear your opinion. HFS is now on a different frequency and it’s all (or mostly) talk. DC radio sux…thank heavens for XM.
TexBetsy @ 251
sorry, ma’am
ydj, you rawk! thanks for that new group!
Michael “Mouthpiece” Gerson has a new column up at the WaPo (Find it yourself. Friends don’t let friends link to wingnut whackjobs.) about how we’re not doing enough to help the 2 million Iraqis who have fled the country. Or the the 2 million MORE Iraqis who have been “displaced within Iraq”. Memo to Mouthpiece: Before you can provide aid to 4 million refugees, you have to acknowledge that you’ve created 4 million refugees. (For the math geeks out there, that’s well over 10% of Iraq’s population.) That’s not going to happen. And PLEASE don’t try a line like, “No could have foreseen the 4 million refugees.”
P.S. Bonus points to the first Syrian right-wing nutcase who asks the US for assistance in dealing with the tens of of thousands of illegal aliens who are crossing the Iraq/Syria border.
yellowdog jim @ 220
In response to this article, Josh Marshall has some good stuff today about how Bush’s “Democracy Push” hasn’t “faltered,” it was never any more real than “Clear Skies” or “Healthy Forests.”
alright, good night all. falling asleep here, even tho there should be a late late night soon, i’m just beat :-) see y’all later
yellowdog jim @ 255
shouldn’t that be batter up?
g’night pb, and thanks for accepting my friend request :-)
LoudounLib @ 259
Actually, a bunch of the old HFS folks are now at 94.7 FM, and it’s pretty good. But DC radio does suck in general.
LoudounLib @ 259
CTuttle @ 183
Thanks for asking. Are you going to her Farmer’s Market gig on Hilo? I’d ask her what it is with House Democratic anemic leadership, referring specifically to the cave-in on FISA right before the summer recess, and the failure to draw down the Occupation of Iraq. Why do they seem so spineless?
Bob in HI
Redshift @ 267
True, 94.7 has Weasel and Cerphe. I miss listening to them! Wish they’d get an XM gig ;-)
Is everyone off looking for the zed?
Of course, I’m such an old fart I can remember when the Birchmere was next to the A&P on Arlington Ridge Road, and the 9:30 was actually at 930 F Street.
Redshift, I think Bob Waugh landed at WRNR in Annapolis some time back, but I’m not sure if he’s still there.
bobschacht @ 269
I was planning on asking about FISA, she did vote against it, tho!!!
burns, ah yes — I remember it well ;-) I’m a geezer too.
(laughs) no Suz, seems as though there are 3 current or former DC area types who are reminiscing about the old time radio days in DC ;-)
LoudounLib @ 275
I’ve crawled out of the Irish Times a few times, as well. One of my best friends from growing up ended up marrying Andy O’Brien from The Irish Tradition.

Oh lordy, the Irish Times…ever go to Murphy’s in Old Town? btw we’re upstairs now ;-)
new thread.
TeddySanFran @ 255
Oh, dang. She’s married. {sniff}

I’ve been thinking about the wonderful report on the visit to Issa’a office and the talk with his minion. The one thing about it that really impressed me is that the guy could not understand why one of the working poor would pass up a chance to shop at Wallmart. The idea of boycotting a company if it meant paying a few dollars more here and there was absolutely alien to this guy. It comes as no surprise that he is working for the bored millionaire. Do any of these guys actually have souls? Maybe I do lose sleep worrying about stuff like that, but better to lose a bit of sleep than be an amoral sociopath.
CTuttle @ 274
My question was about the *leadership*, and why they caved on this one. “Caving” is just not a matter of how you voted, but about how, or whether, you controlled the agenda. Abercrombie voted against FISA, too, but he didn’t use his seniority to block a vote on the bad bills.
Good luck on your meeting!
Bob in HI
BigMitch @ 179
There was something hinky about chimp’s appearance on Hardball. I think that he’s worried about Petraeus straying from the reservation and becoming a loose cannon. (Please pardon the mixture of metaphors.)
wigwam, et al: Bush is not going to prejudge the report he is going to write and put those guys’ names on? I’m confused again.
Oh, c’mon, let’s not put lipstick on a pig.
The fact that a couple of scholars (O’Hanlon & Pollack) wrote a silly puff piece does NOT make it a “scholarly” article.
The O’Hanlon / Pollack piece is a puff piece; it would be a puff piece no matter who had written it or what spin it had taken.
In order to be a “scholarly” article you still have to pass standards of evidentiary importance and methodological respectability.
Their little spin piece means nothing, and would have failed if it had been any graduate student’s research paper.
The only consolation from all this is that the destruction of the Republicans in 2008 is made more certain.
I don’t believe that the O’Hanlon and Pollack piece was done by accident, especially since we now have a few Dems. hinting that the “surge” is somewhat working. If I am not mistaken, I believe I read somewhere that one of those two guys is consulting with a Dem presidential campaign.
