It appears that there is a misconception that ALL young men who were of the “correct” age during the Vietnam draft years were drafted for military service.

This is not true – there was a lottery – your birthday was what determined when (or if) you would be called up for service. Only a certain number of boys were called each year. It is concievable that you would be able to avoid service simply by having been “born right”.

The lottery started pretty late in the war. Early on few who were eligible were actually drafted…most were able to find deferments if they had the educational capabilities or money. But when the lottery started they diallowed any sort of deferments so the only way to avoid being at risk was to enlist in some sort of “limousine unit” like the Texas Air National Gaurd. So it was a crap shoot for everyone else…I was drawn #9 in 1971.

If you have some time this morning, call the FEC at (800) 424-9530 or in Washington (202) 694-1100. Ask them why Fred Thompson has been getting a pass to cheat on election laws. What is the cheat, you ask? This:

“If Thompson waits until September 6 to formally declare his candidacy, he wouldn’t have to disclose any of the cash given to his campaign until January 31 — after many major contests are over, including the Iowa and Nevada Caucuses, and the New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan and Florida primaries.”

And you thought he was just being coy. Cheaters only prosper when you let them get away with it. More sunshine please

I just watched Lehrer this evening. Gwen Ifle and frequent guest ‘expert’ Susan Page discussed the Freddie candidacy at length. They did NOT, however, even come close to dealing with the angle you brought up in your post, Christy. Seems as if it might be a good idea to call/e-mail and enlighten our PBS “experts”. eh?

- if a candidate is in the “testing” phase, then once he announces or raises cash above what’s “reasonably necessary” (term undefined) he must report ALL funds received, not just those from the previous quarter.

BUT

- if a candidate has announced (no longer “testing”) then it’s the fund raised in the previous quarter that must be reported.

it’d be fun to see thompson evading election laws – he’d be yet another republican playing to type. but I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. once he announces, he will have to report ALL funds raised.

so we should be on the alert for the contents of the first report.

I did press the FEC staffer on whether there’s any oversight on the “testing” phase. there isn’t – candidates define it themselves. so here’s another area needing congressional attention.

The lottery did not exist until 1970. Freddie of Hollywood would have been available for the draft in the early 60s.
