Four years, three books on the subject, and millions in legal fees later, and Karl Rove is still lying about Joe Wilson’s op-ed. From my long-winded debunking of Turdblossom:
MR. ROVE: No. Look, her husband wrote a op-ed that we now know by—in a statement issued on July 11th by the director of the CIA, backed by a report by the Senate Select Intelligence Committee, was misleading and inaccurate. The vice president, the White House and the director of the CIA did not send Mr. Wilson to Africa to look into—to the question of uranium cake from Niger to Iraq.
Okay, check for yourself. Does Joe Wilson say–anywhere in the op-ed–that the vice president, the White House or the director of the CIA sent Joe Wilson? Here’s the exact quote:
In February 2002, I was informed by officials at the Central Intelligence Agency that Vice President Dick Cheney’s office had questions about a particular intelligence report. While I never saw the report, I was told that it referred to a memorandum of agreement that documented the sale of uranium yellowcake — a form of lightly processed ore — by Niger to Iraq in the late 1990’s. The agency officials asked if I would travel to Niger to check out the story so they could provide a response to the vice president’s office.[my emphasis]
Wilson said that “agency officials” asked him to go to Niger, not Cheney, Tenet, or the White House. And in fact, Tenet’s statement doesn’t refute this scenario, either–it completely supports it. Rove’s statement is just a shameless lie–and Gregory likely knows that, too, since he was critical of all the White House prevaricating the week of the leak.
Of course, lying is pretty much all Rove’s got, since he as much as admits that it was inappropriate for him and Libby to go after Valerie Wilson. Though he’s not going to apologize, mind you, because that would make it a lot easier for the Wilsons to sue Rove’s doughy ass.
Meanwhile, aside from the nice theater of inviting Matt Cooper to debunk Rove–after Rove had safely retreated to the green room–NBC’s David Gregory doesn’t ask any of the logical follow-up questions.
But what do you expect? NBC insists on having the guys who are part of the story interview the other people who are part of the story. Russert interviews Novak, and Gregory interviews Rove. So even though Gregory no doubt knows that Rove is lying about Wilson’s op-ed, he’s not going to ask any tough questions because it might spark Rove to put Gregory on the spot. You know–by asking Gregory why he continues to refuse to discuss how Ari Fleischer leaked Valerie Wilson’s identity to him, in spite of the fact that Fleischer never considered their conversation a confidential one?
Please! Give us Shuster!
It’s a pity, too. Because Rove today went official with his cover story for his leak to Bob Novak. And it’d be nice if someone would point out how closely Rove’s cover story parallels the story that Libby told investigators. You know–the one deemed by a jury of Libby’s peers to be a deliberate and felonious lie?
Update: Jeebus! It’s a testament to how conflicted NBC is on this particular story that Fox News (I know) challenges Rove more on his fishy story than Gregory does!

And that my friends is the definition of sociopath.
Marcy,
Did you watch all of his appearances today? I am waiting for the C&L videos since i don’t have TV.
When I read Joe Wilson’s piece in the NYT the first thing I thought was “Nobody Died When Clinton Lied.” Googled it and found 1 hit.
Wrote those five words as a letter to the Editor of the LA Times, and when they didn’t publish it I published it myself by painting it in huge letters on big pieces of cardboard which I then placed on freeways all over southern California.
ahh, the good old days…
Hey Marcy,
Are you enjoying the rainy day? It sure has given me the opportunity to catch up on a few things around the house.
The garden luvs it too.
He also called Tweety a LIAR right to Gregorys face and Gregory said NOTHING…I wonder how Tweety feels about Gregory letting Rover lie about him on TV…Hmmm
Gregory is sooo in bed with those guys.
Rover accused Chris Wallace of acting as an agent of Congress.
That was quite shocking, you figured Turdblossom would get some love from the smarmy one.
I was quite amused.
David Gregory aka MC Rove’s dance partner
With Karl, one never knows about his public statements. Some are what he truly believes, and others are what he wants others to believe and then act upon. It’s never easy to tell which is which.
Why are there un-indicted co-conspirators on MTP? Is Mr. Russert a lawyer? And yes I realize that Karl hasn’t been charged with anything. I am using the term ‘un-indicted’ in an ethical, if not, moral way.
If Rove didn’t think there was anything wrong in his conversation with Cooper, why did he feel the need to warn him off the story?
Also, Cooper’s notes do not literally say “far” out on the story,…they say “war”..not “far”.
LS @ 9
Gregory knows that Rove isn’t the White House, and if he gives Rove even a smidgen of real trouble, those left behind at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., including Bush, will give him a ration of shit.
montag @ 15
Wouldn’t it be interesting if Gregory got Snow’s job…they’ve mentioned Perino, but I don’t know..
AZ Matt @ 5
I don’t have teevee either (well, at least not until football season starts). But Amato has several clips from the MTP appearance up already (it’s linked in the first paragraph of the post).
oddball @ 7
It WAS going great. But McC the MilleniaLb just asked for a walk, so I spect it’s going to be feeling cold and icky shortly.
Is everybody in bed with everybody? Sometimes it seems so.
Can’t wait for Keith O. to present the appropriate response to mega-Rove-day lies.
Why don’t they just subpoena Rove to come to Congress and ask him all about Gannon’s WH access. He can’t claim executive privilege on that one, because if he does….
Or, subpoena Gannon. If he claims executive privilege, well…
Goopers have done a great job of repeating the lies around their version of the case to the point that at least the wingnuts will always believe it.
In that pix up top you see one of the biggest criminals ever. Will he ever go to jail like John Mitchell, or Haldeman or Erlichman did? Not on your life. Does this tell us anything about the deterioration of the system of justice in this country over the last 30 years?
Thought Gregory was the guy who always gave the White House the biggest grief at the pressers. Different guy?
rwcole @ 24
That’s the guy…and always with a wink and a nod.
LS @ 21
Brings whole new meaning to politicians’ pressing the flesh….
With guys like Libby running around free, it’s hard to explain to my high school kids the importance of voting. They see thugs like Rove poised to make millions on the lecture circuit.
rwcole @ 24
Big chair? Big weenie.
rwcole @ 24
Nope, same guy. But, from accounts I read, when those stories finally get to NBC Nightly News, they’ve been toned down quite a bit.
Karl Rove. The man who went to five colleges. Graduating from none. The brain behind the most powerful individual in the world.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 30
I thought that was Cheney. :)
Oklahoma kiddo @ 19
It appears so. Quite the incestuous little bunch aren’t they?
A dem prez should see that some of these guys get aquainted with their nearest federal detention facility.
It’s traditional to forget about the sins of the past administration- but an exception should be made.
check out this earthquake map. Look at Puerto Rico during this past week….What’s going on?

Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Richard Herbert Cheney and Marjorie Lorraine Dickey. He attended Calvert Elementary School[3][4] before his family moved to Casper, Wyoming,[5] where he attended Natrona County High School. His father was a soil conservation agent for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His mother was a softball star in the 1930s.[6] He has a brother and a sister. He attended Yale University but says “I flunked out.”[7][8] and later attended the University of Wyoming where he earned both a B.A. and M.A. in political science. He subsequently started, but did not finish, doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.[5][9] In April of 2007 Cheney was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service from Brigham Young University, where he delivered the commencement address.[10]
In 1964, he married Lynne Vincent, his high-school sweetheart, whom he had met at age fourteen. Mrs. Cheney served as Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1986 to 1996. She is now a public speaker, author, and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.
Cheney has two children, Elizabeth and Mary, and six grandchildren. Elizabeth, his eldest daughter, is married to Philip J. Perry, General Counsel of the Department of Homeland Security. Mary is one of her father’s top campaign aides and closest confidantes; she currently lives in Great Falls, Virginia. Her sexual orientation as a lesbian has become a source of increasing public attention for Dick Cheney in light of the same-sex marriage debate and Ms. Cheney’s pregnancy. On August 25, 2004, Cheney said that same sex marriage is an issue that should be decided by individual states.[11]
Cheney attends the United Methodist Church.
LS @ 21
That is a great idea. I can think of a couple of lines of questioning that might not produce much information, but would produce great hilarity.
If someone would pull the Gannon string, they’ll come tumbling down in a hurry.
Must be aftershocks from the great Utah earthquake.
We don’t see to have any wealthy guys who are willing to hire dozens of private eyes to investigate goopers..why isn’t someone draggin C notes through a trailer park?
LS @ 37
That would be the G-string right?
I’m sorry, but I couldn’t resist.
Opted out of watching MTP in favor of reading the transcript. It’s clear Rove chooses what to answer, what to dodge, how to try and frame the whole q-and-a; he does not come across well.
Oregonians Warn:Terror Drill May Go “LIVE”
LS @ 34
Nice catch. (Good site to know about.) What IS that? Hawaii and the Azores, too. But PR and not the other islands? No monitoring on the others? That _much_ monitoring on PR? Related to that very deep trench off the north shore of PR? Free edge of the plate being rattled in Peru (and CA and AK)?
sunny @ 42
What if they gave a terror drill and nobody came?
What is going on in Oklahoma? The flooding was very sudden, and very deep. Infrastructure failure? Town of Watonga, OK is also flooded. Lake Watonga has a dam…there are levees.
I smell a rat.
Helpless Dancer @ 40
this thread’s finally going somewhere…
I think Rove is going to be very dangerous out of the WH.
He’ll be quite capable of assisting Repub candidates across the whole political landscape.
It’s easy here to ridicule Rove.
He should not be underestimated, however.
His showing today on MSM demonstrates all this very clearly for me.
So THAT’S why Karl cut loose – to spread propagandistic bullshit.
Wordsmith @ 48
Thank Godess that about 70% of the US knows he’s full of B.S. Even if they don’t know why, they know his motives are suspect.
I say start shining the light on Joe Hagin, considered Rove’s rival in the WH on influence. Mr. Chiquita man himself. He’s been getting away with something behind the Wizard of Oz curtain…
Wordsmith @ 47
That sort of falls into the category of preserving Bush’s legacy and lookin’ after The George W. Bush Liebury, Think Tank and Academy of Ratfucking.
The speculation I’ve not yet heard, though, since he resigned, is that the news hasn’t broken yet that he’s been shoplifting from Target….
Jonathan @ 47
Yup! Rover is onto his next mission. To quote myself:
Frank Rich slams it out of the park today:
Last weekend’s Iowa straw poll was a more somber but equally anachronistic spectacle. Again, it’s a young conservative commentator, Ryan Sager, writing in The New York Sun, who put it best: “The face of the Republican Party in Iowa is the face of a losing party, full of hatred toward immigrants, lust for government subsidies, and the demand that any Republican seeking the office of the presidency acknowledge that he’s little more than Jesus Christ’s running mate.”
That face, at once contemptuous and greedy and self-righteous, is Karl Rove’s face. Unless someone in his party rolls out a revolutionary new product, it is indelible enough to serve as the Republican brand for a generation.
Ahhh, yes. Rove keeps telling the big lies in the hopes that they stick to the dumbass Americans who are lazy and who will just take his word for it.
I wonder if Jenna’s fiance (a Rove protege) will take Rove’s place now in the White House? Gawd, I hope not.
KayInMaine @ 54
Oh, yeah, I can picture the water cooler talk by Bush on that one….
Email for ya Jonathon.
KayInMaine @ 55
Not to worry. Barney has got this covered already.
Inquiring mind wants to know what Jenna’s fiance actually did for Rove.
For KKKarl – you can run on:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e0EQlQXoEo
do you think he brought his ‘family’ with him this weekend, to spend more time with them? gee, his son is off to college soon, you’d think he’d want to spend the weekend honing up on his young republican talking points to give a good impression…….
what a crock!
his game has always been knock-em off at the knees, but before he was always employed by bush-now he’s a freelancer…….will be interesting how many rethugs ‘hire’ him to do their dirty work, now that he’s a freelance thug.
1. Gregory: Hmmmm…I “think” I’m right on this, but will certainly stand corrected if in error: I think MRS. Gregory is a well-ensconced law firm partner. The law firm does lots and lots of work for federal agencies. We can all see the conflict.
2. This is a golden opportunity for my beloved D team to hold a press confeence and denounce the bundle of lies sponsored by MTP via Rove. Hit back hard. Also, it’s a good way to take some flesh off Gregory. Chop him down to size.
Will my D team do this? Will they seize the moment? Sigh….we also know this answer all too well.

dmac @ 61
How many mendacious Gooper pricks are running for Prez?
Ghostman @ 62
My hopeful guess is that Leahy and Waxman are plotting and planning. They are a lot smarter than any of these guys. Remember, as Christy says, there are tons of really great dedicated DOJ people out there. They don’t like what’s happening anymore than we do. Sometimes silence is golden.
Even Michelle Malkin can’t stand Rove:
But here’s what I find striking about Rove’s exit interview:
Not a word here about the Harriet Miers debacle, the botching of the Dubai ports battle, or the undeniable stumbles in post-Iraq invasion policies.
And not a word about the spectacular disaster of the illegal alien shamnesty, which will be the everlasting stain Rove leaves behind.
I repeat from the WSJ news article:
“Mr. Rove, who has held a senior post in the White House since President Bush took office in January 2001, told Mr. Gigot he first floated the idea of leaving a year ago.”
Imagine how much better off the White House and the Republican Party might be now if he had, in fact, left a year ago.
Yes, there’s the legacy Rove should ponder as he puts his feet up.
Hmmmm…who stands to profit by the Deutche bank fire? Two more FDNY firefighters dead…insurance companies, developers…it all makes me sick…reminds me of the mine problems…

Alka Seltzer had the funniest commercials.

fox noise is scrambling to look more relevant these days.
I wonder if we will ever have propaganda free news again?
The rethugs have been after the news media since Watergate when they equated Facts with Liberal.
I don’t get given the poll numbers why every single anchor and bobblehead still shill and whore for this cabal of criminals. BushCo couldn’t have sound and pictures of ALL of them naked with prostitutes could they?
I like this one, too:

If only everyone knew this after Katrina, we wouldn’t have needed FEMA…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..mp;search=
This from Think Progress:
In three Sunday show appearances, he was not asked once about his efforts to politicize the federal government, despite the fact that a front-page article appeared on that very subject this morning in the Washington Post. Rove was also not asked about his role in selling the war prior to the invasion. Nor was he asked about his connections to Jack Abramoff, his use of non-White House email accounts, or his stewardship over the Katrina reconstruction efforts.
I am wondering if ANY spouses of our media work at jobs that do not conflict, in appearance or fact, with unbiased reporting.
Margot @ 76
OMG
Ghostman at 62, thanks for your comment, especially re Gregory’s uxore.

Academy of Ratfucking!? My gawd! I hope I can crawl off to work tomorrow with that vision in my head.

I know it sounds like a stupid thought, but if you think about it…Georgie put Jenna’s ex-boyfriend in charge of the scientists at NASA when he was only 22 years old or something like that. I mean really, Bush putting in Jenna’s fiance of today as his new young Karl Rove really isn’t too far off base if you think about it!
Yikes. *gaging myself with a BBQ spatula*
New thread upstairs
Hi PDU!
Not good for little man Rove when Matt Cooper on national TV says Rove’s a total liar, and that Rove definitely leaked to him Wilson’s wife’s CIA operative identity.
Will we soon see Miss Piggy going wee wee wee alll the way home . . . ?

Sorry to break in OT but they are talking about evacuating Padre and even San Antonio if this thing draws a bulls eye on them. This will give you up to three days warning of that sort of stuff if the weather people can figure it out in time.
althespook @ 88
I’ve been watching it. Two things. From the “radar” imaging, it has the same wierd eye as Katrina and Gilbert.
Hey, Alfred, did you see all the quakes around Puerto Rico this week? Very strange.

I didn’t know that. Hope the gouge holds for re-entry.

Fox is reporting the eye of Dean is moving over Kingston. Hmmmm….that doesn’t quite jive with what I’ve been seeing. If it is true, then the storm is wobbling northward a bit. The eye was passing 50-100 miles south of Jamaica I thought. Fox likes to hype things up…D’oh.
EllyD @ 95
I read those comments. Is that really her?? I don’t know what to think!
T, not OT. Been lurking for ats for dish.

Both Minnesota and Oklahoma are having catastrophic floods today. Infrastructure problems? Both floods very deep and very sudden. Just sayin’.
Jamaican radio sounds like the worst is over.
Thanks LS.
Know it’s epu’d, but I counted 18 times when Rove said to Wallace, “Look, ….” Makes me crazy. It’s a real I-know-more-than-you-do speaking technique, which Dana Perino also incorporates ad nauseum.
They make me nuts.

Yup. Look (at the bright shiny object that is my intellect, and also notice the alacraity and forthrightness I am exibiting by deigning to tell you the truth once again.)
LS @ 107
What did you do, cut, paste, and run? *s*
FYI, new post up… beyond the book salon.
On the Wingnut front…
While being held hostage the other day at my father-in-law’s house, where he plays faux news 24×7, I saw a Hannity report on the Plame-Wilson outing. Supposedly he had “never before seen” docs that supposedly put holes Plame’s account of her role in picking her husband for the Niger trip.
A few minutes in they broke to the mining story.
Anybody see this and have any info on it?
LS @ 106
snark on:
I’m confident we can trust that the Bush administration will get it right. It’s not like they’ve b*ngled anything else or cut funding for anything important like weather/storm/hurricane tracking.
end snark
~~~ModNote: Edited for content to clear filters.~~~
Well, what else would you expect for MC Rove’s dancing partner?
jimmy james @ 111
So is somebody leaking Classified CIA documents to Hannity? Because if he is referring to the original SSIC Report all that stuff is a matter of public record…and has been superseded by statements by by CIA and others involved.
This may relate to the date of the “resume” written by Plame at the behest of the Director of Operations stating some of Wilson’s background in Niger. That was “dated”, though not sent, to the US Embassy in Niger, before Wilson was actually selected. The Director of Ops. wanted conditional agreement from the US Ambassador that the trip by Wilson would not be problematical for them. But the meeting by the “selectors” and discussion regarding his trip occurred after THAT.
I suspect that Hannity has simply been given old documents from the Thirdhand report written for Libby by the Office of Intelligence Research in the State Department that was subsequently used by Senator Roberts’ staff to make it appear that Plame was involved in the decision to send her husband.
Fact is…her husband was selected after he was interviewed and briefed by the Director of Operations, the Ass’t Director of Counterproliferation, and the Assistant Director of Operations (Africa) with staff from the NSA and OIR, as well as a number of Intelligence Analysts from the Non-Proliferation Section in Attendance. Plame wasn’t even there except to escort him in.
Quite bluntly, Plame was in no position to select her husband for this trip. And Wilson had already participated in a mission to Niger in 1999 for the CIA in which he exposed IRANIAN efforts to obtain yellowcake Uranium from them (unsuccessfully, BTW). Given his successful track record (and even more direct experience with Iraq) it would have been perfectly reasonable for he to “suggest her husband”. But apparently someone else suggested the mission BEFORE she did. She merely forwarded the “request” to him.
EllyD @ 95
I’m not sure if it’s Speaker Nancy Pelosi but clearly this person is trying to make it sound like she is and BTW, isn’t illegal to impersonate a Government official???
I’m not so sure this is a parody…there are even tags at the bottom of the page…?
I’m glad you called out NBC on this interview. The fox news piece is a gem.
Willie @ 115
If it isn’t Speaker Pelosi, maybe it is meant to embarrass her! I thought it was her because I thought discussion boards had rules prohibiting impersonation of real people. It is one of Newsweek’s discussion boards!
If you mouseclick the link in that comment, it opens a page of her other comments. She cusses like a sailor and she is vicious.
What are tags? Is it those blue words at the bottom of the page? What do they mean?
TAGS! I know what those are. DOH.
